Zubin Mehta and the IPO. 50 Years Together It all began in 1961. Renowned conductor Eugene Ormandy cancelled his performances with the IPO at short notice due to illness. And then, as in many fairytales in the world of music and theatre, a 25-year-old Indian conductor came to the rescue. This was the beginning of a long and creative love story between the IPO and Maestro Zubin Mehta, and this coming season we will be celebrating 50 years together. The first concert conducted by Zubin Mehta on 23 May 1961, featured Kodaly's Dances of Galanta, Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements and Dvorak's Symphony no. 7. During these 50 years Maestro Mehta proved to be not only one of the major and most sought after conductors of the world, in concert halls as well as opera houses, but a great friend of the orchestra and the State of Israel. For this he was given, among others, a special recognition by the Israel Prize committee in 1991; awarded the Wolf Foundation Prize for Music in 1995-6, and he has received Honorary Citizenship of Tel Aviv-Yafo. The IPO appointed Mr. Mehta Music Advisor in 1969 and Music Director for Life in 1981. As we said, a 50-year long love affair. A good reason to celebrate!

Commemorating the Centennial of Gustav Mahler's Death 7 July 1860 – 18 May 1911 In 2011, the music world commemorates the centennial of the death of one of the major musicians active at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century – Gustav Mahler. The Austrian composer, who was born in 1860 to a Jewish family, became famous first as a great conductor, a profession he pursued to his last day at the age of 50. He carried out his work during the transition period between late Romanticism and the Modern era. Conductor Leonard Bernstein said: "Ours is a century of death and Mahler is its prophet". Mahler acquired his reputation as a great composer mainly due to his symphonies. No one had dared to write such large-scale, complex and extraordinary works. Mahler's works are frequently performed by the Israel Philharmonic, which is considered a "Mahlerian" orchestra. The coming season features a selection of his work.
