Opera Preview: ‘Turandot’ by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) Adults, teens Turandot is Puccini’s last opera. He died after finishing the first scene of the last act, leaving the final scene to be completed by another hand. But there is enough vintage Puccini in Turandot to keep audiences thrilled, ever since opening night in 1926. In our own time, the last act tenor aria “Nessun Dorma” has become ultra-familiar but it is Puccini’s music for the rest of this cruel and often violent Chinese fairy tale that keeps audiences pinned to their seats. Originally from Finland, the Karelian Bear Dog (KBD) is bred to be a fearless big game hunter. Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife currently has six Karelian Bear Dogs — four seniors and two puppies — each a partner with a Wildlife Enforcement Officer or Wildlife Biologist to assist in both the capture and release of bears and cougars that come uncomfortably close to humans. They have also helped in finding evidence in wildlife crimes (poaching). Featured at this presentation will be two senior KBDs, and one puppy. Their handlers will provide an informative, entertaining, and amusing presentation about the dogs and their roles.
