Opera Preview: Carmen by Georges Bizet (1838–1875) Adults and Teens Georges Bizet's Carmen is one of the two or three most popular operas ever written. Carmen's glorious melodies have conjured up images of a fantasy Spain (sun-baked plazas and red tile roofs, sexy gypsies, and handsome matadors) for generations of opera-lovers. Yet many forget this opera is really a tale of sexual obsession and murder, ending with a fatal encounter between star-crossed lovers outside the bullring.
