In the 1850s, Richard Wagner was hard at work on his 4-opera "Ring Cycle" when he encountered the pessimistic philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer. In addition, Wagner, in exile in Switzerland, fell in love with his host's wife. One major result was a new opera, “Tristan und Isolde,” completed in 1859. The passion of its story and the voluptuousness of its love music simultaneously shocked and scandalized 19th century audiences, so much so that it became the must-see opera of its time and still has that power after more than 150 years. The preview lectures will be presented by Norm Hollingshead, who will illustrate his commentary with recorded musical excerpts. • Wednesday, July 21 • 7 p.m. • Issaquah library meeting room, 10 W.
