WELCOME NEWCASTLE DAYS 2015
3
Welcome to Newcastle Days On behalf of the Newcastle City Council, it is my honor to welcome you to Newcastle Days! I encourage you to visit the booths of our sponsors, to enjoy the offerings of our food and drink vendors, and — most of all — to have fun with your Newcastle neighbors! Our all-volunteer Community Activities Commission has put together another wonderful weekend of programs, games and activities for you and your family to enjoy. Of special note this year is a Broadway-themed musical on Friday evening featuring Newcastle talent — including a few local celebrities that you are sure to recognize. I encourage you to join us on Saturday morning, too, as we kick off the day’s festivities with a parade featuring dance troops, Boy Scouts and marching bands. We also have a great lineup of musical talent performing on Saturday that you won’t want to miss. Most are local, but some — such as the Lack Family band — travel the country performing hits from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. And last but not least, our popular car show will bring together auto collectors and enthusiasts from around the region. Though much is changing in Newcastle with the addition of several new developments, a middle school and additional retail space, the city still retains a “small-town” feel, and one where neighbors are not just acquaintances, but friends. It is a community steeped in its coal-mining history, but one increasingly populated by hightech workers. And it is a diverse community recognized by Money magazine as one of the
best small cities in America. We have much to be thankful for in our corner of the world. I have enjoyed serving the community as a councilmember, Steve Buri deputy mayor and mayor over the past eight years. Though my time on the council will end in December, please know how much I have appreciated the opportunity to serve this wonderful community. We have made a great deal of progress together, and I am confident that even brighter days lie ahead. I want to close by thanking
this year’s Newcastle Days sponsors, without whom this celebration would not be possible. They are Waste Management, UW Medicine/Valley Medical Center, Animal Hospital of Newport Hills, HomeStreet Bank, Aegis Living, SolTerra, Coal Creek Family Y, The Golf Club at Newcastle, Seattle Revival Center, KCLS and 4Culture. I also want to extend my sincerest thanks to the volunteer members of our Community Activities Commission and to our city staff, all of whom have labored to bring you a great program and set of activities. Thank you again for joining us at this year’s celebration! Yours truly, Steve Buri Newcastle Mayor

Library opens its books The King County Library System has been participating at Newcastle Days even before the Newcastle Library was built! Once KCLS and the city of Newcastle determined a library would be built in the Newcastle area, library staff began attending the event as a means to learn more about the community and begin building excitement about the new library. We invite you to come by the library table at Newcastle Days, tell the librarians the last good book you read and pick up a library prize of your choice (while supplies last). Librarians can also show you how to download library books and magazines to your mobile device and let you know about exciting programs coming to the library this fall for all ages.
HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWCASTLE DAYS 2015

Society explores city’s history The Newcastle Historical Society will display many unusual items from Newcastle’s coal mining days at Newcastle Days thanks to the care and diligence of Milt Swanson. Milt was a fixture at Newcastle Days with his stories and great smile. Milt is gone, but his memory lives on through of his collection. Mike Intelkofer, the society’s collection manager, will display some of his personal collection of restored machinery used in Newcastle’s past. See how things were done in the early days. There will also be an opportunity to work with some antique carpentry tools. Participants can see how woodworking was done before electric drills and saws were invented. Vickie Baima Olson will conduct two tours of the nearby Newcastle Historical Cemetery, beginning at our display before and after lunch. Good walking shoes are recommended.

Ever yone loves a parade
A parade full of local talent Neil Hubbard, one of Seattle’s top Scottish bagpipers, performs traditional and modern Highland and Scottish smallpipe music along with entertaining educational information about the music, instruments and the traditional Scottish kilt he wears. He is the resident evening bagpiper for The Golf Club at Newcastle. Cornerstone Studio, in the Newport Hills neighborhood, is a place of passion — for dance, learning and kids! It’s not only a dance studio, but it also provides such a self-reflective experience that most kids walk out of the classroom having learned more about themselves than even the dance steps they were taught. They are given room to think and create. The training given is superior, but more than that, Cornerstone is one big family. Cornerstone dancers performing at Newcastle Days will showcase their talents in ballet, jazz, tap, break dancing and more! Hazen High School will reinstitute its marching band program in the fall thanks to contributions from parents, students, staff and the community! How fortunate we are to have them debuting in our parade and performing onstage as their program evolves. Hazen’s award winning Drill Team and energetic Cheer Squad will also entertain on the stage.
Saturday at Newcastle Days starts with a fun and festive parade through Lake Boren Park to kick off the events. The Parade in the Park returns as the opening feature for Newcastle Days beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 12. The parade will start and end with The Golf Club at Newcastle’s Bagpiper Neil Hubbard. Other participants include the Boy Scout Troop 499 Color Guard, a local Brownie troop, Cornerstone dance group, Hazen High School’s marching band, drill team and cheer squad, and the St. Bernard Club of Puget Sound Draft Dogs. Following
the parade, each participant will be invited to the park’s center stage for an encore performance. The city of Newcastle Community Activities Commission also invites any interested military veterans to register to participate in this year’s parade to help recognize Sept. 12 as the National Day of Service. Veterans may email Commission Vice Chairwoman Linda Newing at Lindan@ci.newcastle.wa.us before Sept. 9 to sign up to participate. Additionally, we’ll demonstrate how you can use rain barrels in combination with your rain garden to conserve water. You’ll also contribute to a permanent rain garden installation in Lake Boren Park! You can sign up for this workshop by visiting the main page of the city’s website (www.ci.newcastle.wa.us) or the city’s Facebook page (www.facebook. com/pages/City-of-Newcastle).
