Newcastle Days: A new tradition At our dinner table a few months ago, my family and I were discussing what was happening with the country’s economy. The conversation then turned to the city of Newcastle and I mentioned the council had discussed saving money by canceling Newcastle Days this year. Our 18-year-old son looked at me and said, “You can’t do that. Newcastle Days are the coolest part of Newcastle. It’s a tradition.” He was right. Newcastle Days has been a part of our city for 16 years. And this year, thanks to many community members and good neighbors stepping up to volunteer time and services, we are happy to continue the tradition. We need tradition to remember our history. Founded in 1869, Newcastle was a coal-mining town. Those coal-mining days are long gone, but our rich history remains. Some of you were with me on the special day when this city incorpo-

rated in 1994, and many more have joined us along the way. With each of us comes a sense of community and pride in calling Newcastle home. Newcastle Days also celebrates our future. Mayor John Dulcich This year’s celebration highlights our community and demonstrates how a group of neighbors and friends banded together to save a beloved community event. I would especially like to thank all the Newcastle Days Committee volunteers: Chairwoman Koleen Morris, Diane Lewis, Suzi O’Byrne, Pam Lee, Sandra Wixon, Angela Wingate, Craig Belcher, Doug Kunkel and David Harris. These individuals truly went beyond the

call of duty in planning and organizing. If you see any of them wandering around Newcastle Days this weekend, please give them a big thank you or maybe even offer to buy them a beverage. Also, thanks to members of the city staff, led by Parks Program Manager Michael Holly, for their hard work and hours spent setting up the facilities and helping with planning. We are very grateful for the generosity of Grand Presenting Sponsor Valley Medical Center for its continual financial support of Newcastle Days. Thanks to the Animal Hospital of Newport Hills for its cash donation and sponsorship of the pony rides. Also, thank you to The Golf Club at Newcastle for sponsoring the bouncy houses and volunteering transportation equipment for the event. We are fortunate to have such good corporate citizens in our community. Newcastle Days didn’t just happen this year. Your friends and neighbors worked to make sure that tradition didn’t slip away during these trying financial times. That’s just another thing that we can be proud about living in Newcastle. Enjoy it all. As we send our first child off to college, some of you will send your first to kindergarten. I hope that your family will enjoy what we have and create rich memories spending time with each other at Newcastle Days. Please join me in celebrating our community. Have fun! John D. Dulcich Mayor

Milt Swanson brings mining history alive By Pam Lee Newcastle Historical Society

By Tim Pfarr

Historian Milt Swanson (left) shows the old ways used to drill. Swanson, who regularly invites trail-walk attendees to his museum of historic mining artifacts, will share his stories at the Historical Society’s booth during Newcastle Days.

5

Come and take a peek at Newcastle Historical Society’s booth and meet a legend in his own right: 92-year-old Milt Swanson, co-president of the society and former Newcastle miner. He loves to share stories about Newcastle’s past, and he is truly a city treasure. You are invited to visit the nearby Newcastle Historical Cemetery from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Sept. 11. Coal was first discovered in the Newcastle area in 1863, the same time Seattle was established. Our coal was King County’s biggest industry in the 1880s and helped make Seattle the dominant port on Puget Sound. It mainly went to fuel the growing town of San Francisco after the big migration following the Gold Rush. Come to the booth and find out even more interesting history about Newcastle.

Display pays tribute to farm equipment of yesteryear

Kirk Unzelman and Mike Intlekofer spent six months restoring this 1950 AllisChalmers B tractor, found sitting for 15 years unused in the owner’s front yard.

Mike Intlekofer and Steve O’Byrne, members of the Newcastle Historical Society, will bring three tractors, a Letz feed grinder and a manure spreader for a hands-on display of what type of farming equipment was common to the Newcastle area in its past. Intlekofer will bring a 1950 AllisChalmers B tractor that will be used to power the 1920’s vintage Letz Model 111X feed grinder. He will bring corn cobs to be “fed” to the Letz for participants to be able to realize the full impact of how powerful and efficient the machine was in its day! O’Byrne will bring a 1950’s International Harvester Super A tractor with a cycle bar mower and a 1949 Ferguson tractor with a 1940’s John Deere manure spreader. The Super A tractor has been working in Newcastle since the late 1950’s — mostly in the area of 116th Avenue Southeast and Southeast Newcastle Way. These pieces of machinery are routinely decorated and reside off Southeast 89th Place.

To make the grinder more portable, Unzelman and Intlekofer mounted it on wooden skids, and then built a cart to carry it.

This 1920’s vintage Letz Model 111X feed grinder bought by Kirk Unzelman and Mike Intlekofer, was fairly complete, needing only cleaning, adjustment, lubrication, and a new plate pressure spring.

Volunteers make Newcastle Days possible By Koleen Morris Chairwoman, Newcastle Days Planning Committee A fantastic group of Newcastle volunteers joined together to organize this year’s Newcastle Days. Due to budget constraints and difficult economic times, the city was looking for alternate ways to host the event. Recognizing the city’s dilemma, these community-minded individuals volunteered their time and energy to ensure its continued success. In the spirit of collaboration, the committee worked tirelessly for the past six months to bring this timehonored tradition to Newcastle. A big thank you to parks commissioners Suzie O’Byrne, Diane Lewis and Craig Belcher; Pam Lee, from the Historical Society; and Angela Wingate, Sandra Wixon and Doug Kunkle, from the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce. Newcastle Days could not have been achieved without them!
