MAYOR’S WELCOME
3
Newcastle Days celebrates our history Welcome to our 17th annual Newcastle Days! Newcastle Days allows us to celebrate and remember our history. Our city incorporated 17 years ago, but Newcastle was founded in 1869 as a coal-mining town. It is the coal carried from Newcastle that is attributed to making the Port of Seattle a dominant West Coast seaport. Those days are long gone, but our rich history remains. It’s present and future is even richer. The coal mines have given way to worldclass golf courses, diverse housing developments and new parks. When this city incorporated in 1994, many of you were with me. And a lot of you have joined us along the way. With each of us comes a sense of community and pride that we can call Newcastle home. I thank Councilman Sonny Putter, who has been with me on the council since
our city’s inception; he served as mayor from 2000 to 2001. Sonny will retire from the council this year after 17 consecutive years of community, regional and civic Mayor John duty. Dulcich This year, for the second time, Newcastle was selected as one of CNN’s Money Magazine’s Best Places to Live in America. It’s not a secret to us that we live in a wonderful place. Thank you to our Grand Presenting Sponsor Valley Medical and our other sponsors. Also thank you to our Newcastle Days Committee (Koleen Morris, chairwoman) and the posse of volunteers who have made Newcastle Days
flourish each year. As we wrap up a summer filled with peek-a-boo sunshine and a troubled economy, we stand strong as a community. We come together at the fruit stand, our neighborhood restaurants (we are spoiled with their offerings), Wednesday night concerts, picnics, cookouts and while shopping at our neighborhood stores. Soon, we’ll watch children come and go on school buses, pick out pumpkins and cornstalks, rake leaves and enjoy neighborhood Halloween festivities. We look forward to Thanksgiving and holiday gatherings with fireplaces and friends to share with in the winter months. I salute each individual who has pride in Newcastle. Please join me and my family this Newcastle Days in celebrating our community heritage. Very truly yours, Mayor John D. Dulcich

HISTORY
Step back in time with Newcastle Historical Society The Newcastle Historical Society will have a “What is it?” table at Newcastle Days where people can identify objects from the city’s past. The table will feature old gadgets that would have been used around the home and barnyard that are interesting, especially to children. There will also be old farm implements, such as corn huskers, water pumps, etc. that are handson items for people to experience. There will also be historical photos and memorabilia on display, and the Newcastle Historic Cemetery will be open to the public. When residents discover the cemetery “they are really proud to have a special identity,” according to Pam Lee, who has been involve with the Newcastle Historical Society since its beginning. The cemetery “is a source of pride for the city,” she said. “It’s a pleasant and peaceful place to be.”

5K RUN/WALK
9
Newcastle 5K is now an annual tradition The third annual Newcastle 5K is now a regular part of the Newcastle Days celebration! The Newcastle Days 5K Run/Walk kicks off at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 10 at Lake Boren Park. The 3.1-mile route, like the two previous years, winds through May Creek Park and Lake Boren Park on paved roads and wide trails. This race is for beginning runners, seasoned runners, walking groups and everyone in between! The past two years, the race has had a fun atmosphere — the race is dog friendly, there are great volunteers who come out to help and following the run/walk there is a kid’s dash! Our fabulous sponsors also provide snacks and services for participants and spectators. This year, the race is putting money toward a scholarship fund for college-bound high school seniors from Newcastle. As college tuition goes
up, we want to help support students aiming for higher education. Learn more by emailing newcastle5k@hotmail.com.

Lambert will announce the winners at 4 p.m. Vehicles will enter Lake Boren Park off of 129th Avenue and will be wonderfully displayed on the rolling lawn in the north part of the park. This year marks the 100th “birthday” of Chevy – something to think about when you’re looking at all of these classic cars. All cars are welcome.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers keep the festival rolling Newcastle Days volunteers are still needed to help with the event. Wow, what a great way to get involved with the community and have fun at the same time. As Uncle Sam Newcastle would say, “We Need You!” ... but it’s only a short-term commitment — one day, and you don’t have to cut your hair! Seriously, we need adults to help with the parking in the morning, directing the 5K runners, showing vendors to their locations, and later in the day, helping in the beer tent. Any takers? Oh yes, volunteers receive an event T-shirt. Email Grace Stiller at gracestiller@comcast.net, or call 228-7827 or 206795-5783 for more information. Students are welcome to volunteer and receive community service hours. Thank you to the Hazen High School football team and the Newcastle Weed Warriors, who will be with us again this year! Volunteers check in at the volunteer station located near the restrooms. Sign up online by taking the brief Survey Monkey survey found on the home page at www.NewcastleWeedWarriors.org and order your T-shirt in advance! Also, stop by the King County Noxious Weed Program booth and learn how to control invasive noxious weeds in King County. Free brochures are available, and new this year — paperless information can be sent directly to your smart phone! Or go to www.kingcounty.gov/environment/ animalsAndPlants/noxious-weeds/ outreach/fairs.aspx. The Weed Warriors have been with us for the past four years, and we are glad to see them back with us again this year! Look for them in the shelter area by the restroom, with the Newcastle Weed Warriors.
