MAYOR’S WELCOME NEWCASTLE DAYS 2012
3
You’re invited to celebrate Newcastle Days Today we join with our friends and neighbors to celebrate Newcastle’s 18th birthday. This year’s emphasis is on the history of how we reached this point of being a bedroom community, with basic amenities, interlaced with trails, open space, big and small critters, and a recognition as the 17th most livable small city in the United States. What were we 150 years ago? Wilderness. Only 12 miles from Seattle, but without roads, and with many more cougars and bears than people. What were we 100 years ago? A thriving coal-mining community of 3,000 people and 500 homes with the only post office and voting precinct on the Eastside, and a railroad that went to Seattle. What were we 50 years ago? A dying coal-production area without a railroad, with strip mines covering 80 to 90 acres between red town and China Falls, and a handful of houses.
Today we boast a population of 10,400, the No. 1 venue on the Eastside at the Golf Club, a new library, a “Y”, and more than 40 miles of roads. As you walk around Lake Rich Crispo Boren Park on Sept. 8 stop by the volunteer organizations (Newcastle Trails and the Weed Warriors) that are responsible for providing and maintaining our wonderful trail system. At the Newcastle Historical Society, try out some of the innovative tools used more than 100 years ago by the coal miners and their families, and if you have a thirst, try the Saloon at Newcastle. There will be a Newcastle history trivia quiz (with a nice prize) and each of our booths will have one
question and answer. Visit them and learn about our city while being introduced to their offerings. Remember our sponsors. We can only put on these events if we get support from the business community. Valley Medical, Boeing Employees Credit Union, and the “Y” are the major contributors that enabled this version of Newcastle Days. We thank them and the other sponsors that have helped. Newcastle is a great little city. When my wife and I moved here, we had options, but we chose Newcastle because of what it is. Most of you did the same. The community feel is demonstrated by how Newcastle Days has happened. A number of volunteer residents, working with some of the businesses, and supported by the city staff have made this event happen. I couldn’t be prouder. Rich Crispo Mayor of Newcastle

Thank you I’d like to express my gratitude to this year’s Newcastle Days planning committee — Michael Holly (city of Newcastle parks manager), David Harris (HTS Audio), Angela Wingate (Newcastle chamber president), Sandra Wixon (Newcastle chamber/business owner), Mark Ryker (Newcastle resident), Diane Lewis (parks commissioner), Craig Belcher (parks commissioner) and Doug Kunkle (Newcastle chamber) for their commitment to the community. I know how busy you all are, and for you to take this on really speaks to your character, dedication and commitment to our community. Volunteers with your passion and dedication are so hard to come by. It is one thing for people to give money, but to give so selflessly of your time speaks volumes. These fabulous people volunteered their time and energy to make Newcastle Days possible. This annual event could not have been achieved without them! Thank you! BANDS NEWCASTLE DAYS 2012
Bands perfrom a variety of musical genres
Folichon
www.facebook.com/pages/ Folichon-Cajun-Band/49839104892
Heartless
www.facebook.com/heartlessinseattle Seattle’s Heart Tribute Band Heartless is Seattle’s premier Heart tribute band. The members of Heartless (Darlene Tyler, Brenda Kashmir, Dan Benz, Derek Whitaker, Dan Kehoe, Kevin Lynch and CJ McRae) are seasoned, accomplished musicians/performers who have been a presence in the music scene in this area for many, many years. After several years of talking about forming a Heart tribute band, Brenda and Darlene, who have been in other musical ventures together, were finally able to make the project a reality. The band was born out of a sincere respect, admiration and love of Heart and the band’s incredible and timeless music. All of the members of the band are fans of Heart and with this project hope to give you an experience that you won’t forget while honoring Heart and its music. In addition to all of the Heart material, the band has added another set of material which includes Journey, Queensryche, Van Halen, Night Ranger, Guns N’ Roses and many more ‘80s and ‘90s rock classics!
After years of jamming with the Seattle Cajun music aficionados, Tim’s first public performance was with a band he called Mudbug, until he learned that there already was a blues band with that name. Ted started in the jams also and after the first Dewey Balfa Cajun and Creole Heritage Week in Louisiana in 2000 began seriously trying to learn some songs. Tim and Ted and an assortment of fiddlers played a few gigs together until the Phinney Neighborhood Association Beer Taste in 2007, and were joined by Sandy and Karen England taking the name Folichon, which our research tells us means “fun” or “playful” or “amusing.” Take your pick. Karen has been for more than 30 years the fiddler for How’s Bayou, and is, in Ted’s nomenclature, “The Queen Champeen of Cajun Fiddlers.” It’s a huge honor for the rest of us to play in a band with someone at the very top of the genre. So here we are, playing the music as authentically and intensely as we can, and liking what we see on the dance floor when we perform. The purpose of this music is dancing, so come on out and get moving!
Master Mahan
http://mastermahan.bandcamp.com Master Mahan is an extremely DIY band of buds from Renton. Sentiments inspired by Dixieland, Tin Pan Alley and a Peter Pan mentality that we take seriously, mixed with our rock ‘n’ roll instrumentation and comic book fascination create spunky swing-punk that we call bubblegum skunk. It’s ska-pop sure to make your jaw drop.
The Love Jacks
www.reverbnation.com/briandijulioandthelovejacks Brian DiJulio and The Love Jacks
are a new rock band with a familiar old sound … bringing the quality “arena” rock sound of the ‘70s and ‘80s to a generation thirsty for heart-pounding, back-of-the-neckhair-raising rock ‘n’ roll music. In the spirit of Bon Jovi, Journey, Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp … The Love Jacks (Brian DiJulio, Theron Andrews, Keith Lovett and Sid Anschell) combine great melodic lyrics with hard driving guitars and soaring solos … but do so with a new freshness that is found in current bands like Kings of Leon, Neon Trees and The Killers. “We love our new ‘old-fashioned’ rock sound, and believe that there’s a whole generation of younger fans of rock looking for a band that’s not afraid to make some noise,” says Brian DiJulio, front man and founder of the band. All this makes for an exciting, high-energy show that makes most people jump out of their seats and fire up their lighters … long live rock, and long live The Love Jacks!

Check out a book or turn in one of your own Donations sought Calling all book lovers! Friends of the Newcastle Library needs your help. The group will be at Newcastle Days to collect your gently used books, CDs and DVDs to stock the Book Sale area at your new library. Book sales are the primary way to build a fund that sponsors lifelong learning programs at the library. From reading readiness for preschoolers to job-hunting workshops, from enriching talks about the arts to seminars for teen writers, the Friends want to make the library a resource for the whole community. Your donations are the key to making that happen. The Friends of the Newcastle Library will also be enrolling new members. Your Friends membership keeps you informed about
what’s happening at the library and tells you how you can participate in events — and also gives you early-bird access to the big annual Book Sale. We’ll be looking for you at Newcastle Days, so please look for us near the brightly colored Library2Go! van.
Library on wheels Come and see Library2Go!, the mini-bookmobile that brings library services to neighborhoods without easy access to library buildings.

The vehicles are shared by the 47 KCLS libraries, with local library staff members using the vehicles for outreach in their community. Library2Go! will visit Newcastle Days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 8. The library system is also proud to bring national award-winning children’s singer-songwriter Nancy Stewart to Newcastle Days for a fun-filled concert on the Main Stage at 12:15 p.m. Kids of all ages will enjoy the contagious singalong fun.
