Welcome to Salmon Days, a uniquely familiar festival There’s nothing like a good oxymoron, especially when not intended. Throughout the year, I hear from volunteers, citizens and vendors how special Salmon Days is. What makes it so special? There are hundreds of other arts and crafts festivals. There are even other salmon festivals, but the feeling at Salmon Days is uniquely familiar, and this is by design. We work tirelessly each year to bring all of the elements people expect at a festival. You can expect the traditional fair foods, rows of booths, volunteers and shuttles. So why does Salmon Days feel different? Our uniqueness lies in some of the details you may not know about Salmon Days. Did you know all of the vendors at Salmon Days go through a very regulated jurying process? People often think someone signs up to be a vendor, writes a check and then shows up. We form various committees who are in each industry who evaluate each and every application, which includes product photos, descriptions, previous booth pictures. The artists we bring to Salmon Days truly are the best in the region and the quality of merchandise is different from what you might expect from another festival. Every decision we make is made with the attendee’s experience in mind. Try and find somewhere at Salmon Days where you don’t hear music, you can’t do it. Five stages and three radio stations on site are all strategically placed so that the atmosphere is always festive. The festival grounds are comprised of very distinct areas and we work to make them all feel different. Similar to the different worlds at Disneyland, on an infinitely smaller budget, we try and make each “world” of Salmon Days its own experience. That’s why Front Street North feels different than the Greenbelt Gallery. The Field of Fun feels different than the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery and so on. And finally it’s the people. Issaquah is one of the best places in the world to live and it’s because of who we are. For the most part, we are a small community made up of friendly, courteous, patient and caring people; even strangers don’t entirely seem like strangers. So it’s with great enthusiasm that we present to you this year’s Salmon Days Festival. We hope you enjoy your favorite things about festivals while appreciating the subtle ways we try and make ours uniquely familiar. Eileen Barber Issaquah Salmon Days Festival chairwoman

Shuttle to the festival foot loose and fancy $3 The Salmon Days shuttle and Overlake Medical Clinics have returned to offer a convenient transportation option to and from the festival from three parking locations. Catch the shuttle from the Issaquah Park & Ride Transit Center, the Issaquah Highlands Park & Ride or the new location at Costco Corporate headquarters. Our eco-friendly, biodiesel buses arrive every 10-15 minutes to whisk you to one of two drop-off locations for the festival — Front Street North and Northeast Dogwood Street. The shuttle costs $3 (cash only). Children 10 and younger ride free. Handicapped-accessible buses are available. The Issaquah Highlands Park & Ride shuttle will drop-off and pick-up festival attendees on the corner of East Sunset Way and Second Avenue Northeast. The

Spawnsored by Issaquah Highlands Park & Ride is between Northeast High Street and Northeast Park Drive. Take exit 18 off Interstate 90 and follow Highlands Drive North until a parking structure appears on your left. The entrance will be on the left side of the one-way street. The pick-up point for passengers will be in front of Issaquah Highlands Self Storage, 910 N.E. High St. For the Costco corporate parking lot shuttle, from I-90 take exit 15 and go north on East Lake Sammamish Parkway. Turn onto Lake Drive, take a left at the four-way stop and continue to the lot on the left. The Costco corporate parking lot is near the store, and the shuttle is on Lake Drive. The Issaquah Park & Ride Transit

For easiest access, use Exits 15 or 18 both days.

Center is on the corner of state Route 900 and Newport Way. It is easy to find by heading south off exit 15 and finding it on the left after the third set of lights. All pick-up locations will deliver attendees near the corner of Front Street North and Northeast Dogwood Street. When heading back via shuttle, make sure you return to the same shuttle stop where you were dropped off to ensure you are taken to the correct parking location. The shuttles start running at 9 a.m. and end at 7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Please note: If you plan to attend the carnival, make sure you are at the shuttle stop no later than 7 p.m. as the carnival runs later than the shuttles. No dogs on shuttles; service animals only.

Parking Parking options around the festival are offered by Issaquah nonprofits organizations that operate pay parking locations.

Information Booth

#soFlippinFun

Got questions? We’ve got answers! Information Booths Want to know what exciting things are happening at Salmon Days? Then be sure to stop by one of the three information booths conveniently located at the corner of Front Street North and Northwest Dogwood Street, Front Street South and East Sunset Way, and on the west end of the Field of Fun at Veterans Memorial Field. Have a question while on the move? Keep an eye out for our roving information experts. Wearing orange vests with a large question mark on the back, these experts will be able to point you in the right directions. Many of our helpful information booth volunteers donate their time and Issaquah expertise year round at the Visitor Information Center. Our wonderful volunteers have a wealth of

knowledge, not only about the festival, but also about the community at large.

First Aid There are three first aid stations, all operated by Eastside Fire & Rescue, to make medical attention easy and accessible. Stations are at: - The festival’s north entrance near the intersection of Front Street North and Northeast Dogwood Street. - The festival’s west entrance on West Sunset Way near Newport Way. - The festival’s east entrance at the fire station on East Sunset Way.

Quiet Room The Quiet Room is on the west side

of the Field of Fun and is managed through a long-standing partnership with Issaquah’s Friends of Youth. The Quiet Room is the ideal place for parents with children needing a break from the hustle and bustle, to feed a young one or change a diaper.

Please Leave Your Dogs at Home Salmon Days is a great place for fish, friends, family and kids. Thank you for leaving your pets at home! We love fur, fins and feathers, but our bustling environment is not pet friendly nor is it fun for your beloved pets. Thank you, on behalf of the city of Issaquah, the Greater Issaquah Chamber of Commerce and the Salmon Days Festival.

Festival Theme

#soFlippinFun

A theme so fun, just add # Every year, many of us gather to contemplate the theme for the next Salmon Days. Some years, it is almost immediate acceptance of an idea/look. Other years, it takes more time, additional input, feedback, massaging. The year 2015 was one of those years. We started with a gathering at the worktable and reviewed a few ideas that felt the most promising. Brian Twiggs, our spawnsorship development manager, prepared an idea sheet and threw in one more idea to fill in the last blank, it was #soflippinfun. The other suggestions were fine, but when we got to #soflippinfun — with not just a hashtag, but as Brian said, “It’s Salmon Days, so it has to be ‘splashtag’” — laughter erupted and smiles abounded. We’ve got it! Next, the words were shared with our graphic designer, Robin Dale Spicer. She submitted several ideas, and then we tweaked and tweaked until we came up with our favorite design. As it hung on the wall, we contemplated the usage and imaged implementation. Then, Sean Callahan on our team had an idea. He worked it up on the computer — it was an outdoor scene complete with mountains, trees, Ferris wheel, can-

#soFlippinFun opy and of course stream with salmon. Using a “folded paper” look with rich, bright colors, we loved it. Then, he added the Spicer work into the top as the headline/ billboard of sorts: splashtag soFlippinFun — Salmon Days 2015.

Salmon population

Hatchery weathers dry, warm summer By Tom Corrigan tcorrigan@isspress.com As most are well aware, this past summer was one of the driest and warmest on record all across the state of Washington. Setting aside the many disastrous wildfires, the dry, warm weather was not helpful on at least one other front. Little rain and warm temperatures mean low water levels and warm waterways, neither of which are good news in terms of the local salmon population. Still, while Issaquah Salmon Hatchery Manager Darin Combs acknowledged the weather has not been friendly to local salmon, he said the hatchery largely escaped the record-breaking

summer unscathed, adding that during Salmon Days, hatchery visitors should not be disappointed with what there is to see. “We seem to be on track,” Karen Kane, hatchery executive director, added. Chinook salmon are usually the first breed to reach the hatchery each year. Thanks to the rainfall that arrived with the unofficial beginning of fall, Combs said the chinook run has gone pretty much as expected. As of mid-September, the hatchery had trapped between 600 and 700 chinook. Other areas weren’t as lucky, said Larry Phillips, the state’s chief fish biologist for South Puget Sound. “We are in unusual times,” Phillips said, noting water levels and warmer than normal water temperatures forced

the closure of fisheries in the state. Drought and warmer weather can harm fish in any number of ways, according to the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife website. For example, downstream migration of juvenile salmon in the spring is linked to the surge in stream flows brought about by runoff from melting snow in the mountains. If the snow packs are small, runoff diminishes and migration patterns may change. Young salmon and other species could become stranded in isolated pools, leaving them susceptible to predators. And that’s just one problem. For adult fish, dry weather and low water levels might mean difficulties reaching upstream spawning grounds. Weather-related effects might not be limited to this year, Phillips noted. If the fry population drops this year, the number of adult fish obviously will be lower in future years. Some salmon species are born and fairly quickly head for salt water; others stick around for up to a few years in local fresh waters. Phillips said if water levels remain low, those fry clearly could be in trouble. Still, as Combs said, recent rains have helped. According to information released by King County, of 16 rivers and 24 creeks measured at the end of August, only four creeks were still at all-time lows. In fact, several rivers and creeks had higher than typical flows for this time of year, including Issaquah Creek. Temperatures also seem to be falling, though county numbers showed the Sammamish River still above average. Combs also noted the Sammamish River is experiencing problems. “That got just extremely warm this year,” he said. As temperatures fall along with rain, water levels are getting higher. The county noted Lake Sammamish rose 1 inch in late August. But the lake elevation still is the third lowest since 1998 and 1.3 inches below the lake’s median. Salmon numbers reaching the Issaquah hatchery can very widely from year to year. According to the hatchery website, more than 13,400 chinook were trapped in 2007. Last year, that number dipped to 2,554. “No one really knows why,” Combs said, though he added tough-to-predict ocean conditions could be a factor.

Festival composting

#soFlippinFun

Respawnsibly cleaning as we go One of the most important things this year at Salmon Days is our commitment to keeping a clean and green festival. An event of this size has a way of catching up with our carbon footprint. Ensuring a healthy environment for the salmon is always on our minds. This year, we continue our initiative to use only compostable service ware and to-go containers. This is a joint effort of the city of Issaquah’s Office of Sus-

tainability, Recology CleanScapes and the Salmon Days office. From straws to plates and everything in between, Salmon Days will again be one of the festivals in the country that requires vendors to use only compostable products. Made from corn, sugar cane, bamboo and wheat

by-products, which are all fully compostable, these goods allow Salmon Days organizers to drastically reduce waste destined for the landfill. Friendly volunteers and event professionals from Recology CleanScapes will happily help you dispose of your food containers at our recycle stations. So grab a tasty treat, enjoy some delicious food and come help us “respawn-sibly” celebrate the return of the salmon to our local hatchery.

Sister City #soFlippinFun

See visitors and continue our friendship with Chefchaouen ‘A Stroll by the Casbah in Northern Morocco’ a recently published article in The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/1KjOWCn), identifies the unique charm and beauty of Chefchaouen, Morocco, a city we are proud to share a thriving sister city relationship with. Visitors to Morocco remember the mountains and desert, the bright colors and intricate designs and details. Through our Sister City Che-

fchaouen, Issaquah has developed rich relationships and learned a great appreciation for their culture. The two communities have exchanged students, artists and governmental representatives for nearly a decade. You may have seen the Blue Door outside Issaquah City Hall. It is a gift of friendship, a symbol of, and testament to, the deep relationship with Chefchaouen. And in Chefchaouen there is a new “fishy” pres-

ence around its city hall, offices and homes. This year, Issaquah is honored to host two artists from Chefchaouen. Meet them in person, view beautiful artistry in leather and tile. Continue the friendships between the Northwest of the United States and the Northwest of Africa! Welcome them to our corner of the world at their booth on East Sunset Way.

You’ll flip out at the Field of Fun It’s more fun than you can shake a stick at.

Kids’ Stage Ongoing acts throughout the day will entertain children and children-atheart with singing, dancing, juggling, magic and more. Ronald McDonald will also be stopping by each day for an amazing act! Thank you to Fred Meyer and McDonald’s for their continued support.

Arena Sports Soccer Experience Come and watch the Sounders of the future. Arena Sports will bring its giant soccer field again. Kids can get instruction, scrimmage or just run around and be kids. In its third year at Salmon Days, this has become a great attraction.

Human Hamster Balls Just as cool as it sounds, these are some big balls. How big? Big enough for 200 hamsters or one kid. Banic Chiropractic is the hero of this event for bringing it back again. Head over early or late because the lines get long... or buy your own.

Fish Prints Children have been making Fish Prints at Salmon Days for years and some have created quite the collection. Some make it to the fridge, others get laminated —

what will you do with yours? Seattle Children’s Bellevue Clinic and Surgery Center continues to bring this tradition to Salmon Days, where kids can show their creativity with paint... and fish... and paint brushes... and paper.

Toymaker’s Workshop Join our great volunteers and Rick Hartman, professional toy maker, for a DIY toy-making project. Move

39 throughout the various stations sawing, hammering and putting together your own unique toy that you can take with you.

SAMBICA Inflatable Zone However many inflatables you think we’re bringing to Salmon Days this year, there’s probably more bigger-than-life inflatables that you can jump, climb, slide and joust on. Children of all ages will enjoy bouncing good times (BGTs).

Mini Trains Just as cool as their larger counterparts but much smaller. The whole team at Allegro Pediatrics (formerly Pediatric Associates) is looking forward to having you all aboard. Might want to stop by the food court first, as the line will be pretty long (but worth it).

Springfree Tampolines Jumping on a trampoline with springs is kind of like using a payphone these days. Sure, it suits the purpose if you can find one, but new technology has made them mostly obsolete. Come by for some Flippin’ Fun!

Puget Sound DockDogs Bring the whole family to watch our four-legged friends compete at long jump, high jump and speed retrieve. Depending on the weather, you may or may not want to be standing in the splash zone. This Fintastic event is once again Ohfishally spawnsored by Alpine Animal

Field of Fun Hospital and Cascade Water Alliance.

World record attempt

#soFlippinFun

Paint a fish, break a world record By Tom Corrigan Paint a fish and get in the Guinness Book of World Records. That will be the chance offered to everyone who attends Salmon Days this weekend. Stop by the artEAST Art Center on Front Street, sign in and pick up a paintbrush. You can then use that paintbrush to color in any one of 2,900 numbered fish making up a temporary mural on the back walls of the community art gallery. The idea is to set the record for the most people involved in a paint-bynumbers project. Formally sanctioned by Guinness, the effort is being undertaken by artEAST, the grassroots arts group Creative Children for Charity and the Sammamish YMCA. The current record is 2,239 people set by the FX Network in putting together a mural for “The Simpsons” TV show, said Chirag Vedullapalli, 14, one of the young founders and leaders of Creative Children for Charity. Chirag said organizers of the coming record attempt deliberately decided to set the bar higher in terms of the number of people involved to soundly set the record. The youth-led Creative Children has taken care of drawing the initial mural and carefully numbering all those fish, said Chaitra Vedullapalli, Chirag’s mom and a mentor for the group. She also serves on the board of directors for the Sammamish YMCA. Along with artEAST and Creative Children, Sammamish YMCA staff and youths will help man the artEAST Art Center and direct traffic around the giant mural. “We’re thrilled to do this,” said Karen Abel, artEAST executive director. She added that the world record try fits nicely with “the unusual, fun, zany” spirit of Salmon Days in general. “We just thought it would be a really fun, different sort of effort,” said Robin Kelley, director of the Salmon Days Festival.

Abel noted planners had to contact Guinness ahead of time and will need to keep careful tabs on the goings on around the mural throughout Salmon Days. She said the Guinness people have strict rules that need to be followed or the record attempt won’t be official. Initially, it appeared organizers would have only one day to complete the mural and the record, Abel said. Thankfully, Guinness clarified the rules, she said, and the record can be earned over the two days of Issaquah’s annual salmon celebration. This isn’t the first time artEAST and Creative Children have teamed up. During last year’s Salmon Days, Creative Children used artEAST’s classroom space to help more than 600 visitors create paper salmon crowns. Chirag said the effort may have set a record for the most paper hats created

during one event, but this year those involved have taken extra steps to ensure any record set ends up on the books. Organizers said Salmon Days visitors are invited to stop by artEAST, 95 Front St. N., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days of the festival to take part in the world record attempt. Those wishing to avoid lines at artEAST can register ahead of time through Fast Track Tickets at http://tinyurl.com/nwqk7do. The price of those tickets and participation in the record attempt is free. The site also offers a silicon wristband that says “I Participated in Making Guinness World Record.” Cost for those is $5 with a $1.27 fee. (Wristbands can also be purchased at the event.) You can also make a donation on the site to help with costs of the record attempt.
