OHFISHAL WELCOME SALMONDAYS.ORG | ISSAQUAHCHAMBER.COM
Welcome to the 2016 Issaquah Salmon Days
My name is Sammy the Salmon and I am asking for your vote for President. I am honored and humbled to have served the great constituents of Issaquah for the past 47 years. We have been through a lot together, seen “reel” change and experienced growth beyond our imagination. Our distinguished Spawnsors continue to support the festival and make it what it is. I ask that you reach out to them, give them a high fin, and most importantly, support them throughout the year. With your vote, I will continue to bring bigger and better attractions for them to spawnsor, of course while maintaining a solid and fiscally responsible budget. My campaign and this festival have not been possible without the
thousands of hours of volunteer time. These volunteers have been canvassing the streets, preparing them for your arrival and we owe them our sincerest gratitude. If you see one of them in their bright colored campaign shirts, please thank them for their public service. I know what you’re thinking, how can a salmon representing the Findependent party gain any traction in the “poles.” It’s going to be an upstream swim. We need to tell the masses about the grassroots movement going on here in Issaquah. The city of Issaquah ohfishally changes its name to Fishaquah each Salmon Days weekend. The tides are changing and we are on the right side of history! Don’t be fooled by the “flip-flop-
ping” comments of my opponents. Their fishy-washy rhetoric is designed to distract you from the real issues. They’ll try and talk about immigration when we should be talking about migration. They want to talk about handing out free passes? Well guess who the only candidate is to essentially gives out 150,000 free passes each Salmon Days weekend? They talk the talk, I walk the walk. I’m the fish who listens to the people. You wanted a beer garden, more booths and food trucks and I listened. This year you will have all of that and more in a new area of the festival located at the Community Center. The state of the festival is strong. I’m Sammy the Salmon, and I’m asking you to turn out and vote for me Oct. 1st and 2nd in Issaquah.

This year, we knew we wanted to be the comic relief in the middle of a very interesting election year. With so many differing opinions and few that seem completely satisfied with the candidates, we knew the time was now for Sammy the Salmon to enter the race, naturally representing the Findependent Party. Robin Spicer created this year’s theme once again. Hopefully you’ve had fun watching Sammy’s campaign unfold through his advertising with campaign yard signs, buttons and shameless social media plugs. We never could have imagined the excitement this theme

SALMON HATCHERY SALMONDAYS.ORG | ISSAQUAHCHAMBER.COM
Salmon hatchery is more than a fish tale By Stuart Miller smiller@isspress.com The salmon currently fighting their way up Issaquah Creek have had quite a journey. It’s a trip they’ve made every year for thousands of years, and will continue to do for years to come — thanks, in part, to the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery. Leaving waters as far North as Alaska, the fish in Issaquah Creek traveled south past British Columbia and into Puget Sound. They swam to Seattle and ascended the fish ladder at the Ballard Locks into Lake Union, then east into Lake Washington. Next, up the Sammamish Slough into Lake Sammamish. From the mouth of Issaquah Creek at Lake Sammamish State Park, they’ve cut through the city, past Pickering Barn, under Interstate 90 and wound their way through residential neighborhoods. The final destination for
many of them is their birthplace — the hatchery in downtown Issaquah. That’s been the story since 1936, when the hatchery was built to help restore disappearing salmon runs back to a healthy level. By the 1930s, Issaquah’s roots in logging, coal mining and other activities in the Issaquah Creek basin had devastated salmon populations. The Works Progress Administration built the hatchery and brought Chinook, coho and steelhead stocks in from the Green River.
How it works Essentially, the hatchery works by blocking upstream access from the creek and using artificial currents to coax returning salmon into holding ponds. Eventually, once the females have “ripened” enough to lay their eggs, the hatchery staff and volunteers will lower the pond level and corner the fish
in one end using slotted grates. One by one, the workers will handle the fish, finding the plump females who are ready to spawn. “We kill them, cut them open and put the eggs in a bucket,” said Darin Combs, the hatchery’s manager. Workers kill the male and female salmon at a 1-to-1 ratio once per week, extract their sperm milk and mix it with the eggs in hundreds of vertically stacked trays in the hatchery building. The male or female fish that don’t fit the ratio are put back in the creek upstream of the hatchery to spawn naturally. Chinook salmon will go up to 15 more miles upstream to find spawning grounds, and coho swim even farther.
Eggs become fish After three months of rearing in the hatchery, workers release millions of Chinook back into the creek to find
17
SALMON HATCHERY SALMONDAYS.ORG | ISSAQUAHCHAMBER.COM
their way to the ocean. Coho spend a year-and-a-half growing at the hatchery before hundreds of thousands are released. This year’s goal is 2.4 million Chinook and 450,000 coho. “It looks like a cloud of fish when they are released,” Combs said. The process protects the eggs and baby salmon from dying before they head out to sea. “The hatchery is a controlled environment,” Combs said. “The odds are against them in Issaquah Creek.” Silt from development around the creek can suffocate the eggs, floods can wash the eggs away, and predators like cutthroat trout eat salmon eggs, reducing the number of salmon that can make it back to sea. Still, some salmon reproduce as they have since the beginning — in the creek itself. Between 5 and 7 percent of the salmon in Issaquah Creek spawn naturally, Combs said.
Natural spawning persists Standing on the bridge over Issaquah Creek at the hatchery, onlookers watch many futile attempts by salmon to leap over the weir that divides the creek and funnels the fish into the hatchery pond. The fish usually land short of their goal and slide back down the metal surface of the obstacle to where they started. Some — whether by luck, skill, or stubbornness — do make the leap, and continue upstream. Others never quite make it to the hatchery at all, and find natural spawning grounds between the mouth of the creek at Lake Sammamish State Park and the hatchery. They are looking for gravel areas, as opposed to silty or muddy spots, to dig their spawning nests, called redds. Females use their tails to dig into the gravel and make a protected pocket where they will lay their eggs. Males pair with females, often fighting each other for the opportunity, and spray their sperm onto the eggs. Then they both die.
Circle of life “When salmon were dying, it kind of got to stink a little bit,” Issaquah resident Greta Huntley said. She moved into a residence along Issaquah
Creek during last year’s salmon run, just in time to catch a whiff of the rotting salmon carcasses. By the end of spawning season in late October, the creek will be littered with the carcasses of salmon who spawned naturally. Ducks, seagulls, bears and other animals eat the dead fish, Combs said. The creek itself also eats the dead fish in its own way. Salmon bodies hold nutrients from the ocean, and when they die, the carcasses act as a fertilizer for the creek, Combs said. It helps support the natural ecosystem of all the organisms living and growing in and around the creek. Some of the slaughtered salmon from the hatchery end up at the Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank. Others are sold to seafood wholesaler American Canadian Fisheries. The money from sales goes into the state general fund.
More than a fish hatchery The resilience of the salmon fighting their way from the ocean to Issaquah appears to have rubbed off on the hatchery itself. It survived a couple closure scares in the early 1990s. “There was a large outcry from the public and the City of Issaquah officials,” according to hatchery literature. “Many argued that the facility was more than a fish hatchery, but was an important part of the community relating to education and tourism.” Friends of Issaquah Salmon Hatch-
ery, an organization dedicated to keeping the hatchery open and operating, was born during the closure scares. Since then, the organization has grown to help the hatchery provide the educational services it offers today. A representative from FISH said that almost 10,000 schoolchildren tour the hatchery every fall on field trips. There are kids there every single weekday during the run, Combs said. In 2015, the hatchery had 19,588 visitor contacts – that is, people who took the official guided tour. “Education solidified our place here,” Combs said. “People want a strong salmon run. People love the hatchery.” Huntley takes evening walks from her home to the hatchery with her 1-year-old daughter Holland, holding her baby up to see the salmon swimming and flopping around the creek. “Holland calls them ducks,” Huntley said. During the salmon run, the Huntleys can hear the salmon almost constantly from their home. “At the peak of the run, it is really loud,” Huntley said. Issaquah’s famous annual Salmon Days festival spawned in 1970 from the community’s love for the famous fish. It brings an estimated 150,000 visitors to the city, according to hatchery literature. It seems that as long as there are people living in Issaquah, there will be people fighting like a fish to keep enjoying the annual salmon runs.

FESTIVAL COMPOSTING SALMONDAYS.ORG | ISSAQUAHCHAMBER.COM
Respawnsibility is cleaning as you go One of the most important things this Spawnsored by year at Salmon Days is our commitment to keeping a clean and green festival. An event of this size has a way of catching up with our carbon footprint. Ensuring a healthy environment for the salmon is always on our minds. This year, we continue our initiative to use only compostable service ware and to-go containers. This is a joint effort of the city of Issaquah’s Office of Sustainability, Recology CleanScapes and the Salmon Days office. From straws to plates and everything in between, Salmon Days will again be one of the festivals in the country that requires vendors to use only compostable products. Made from corn, sugar cane, bamboo and wheat by-products, which are all fully compostable, these goods allow Salmon Days organizers to drastically reduce waste destined for the landfill. Friendly volunteers and event professionals from Recology CleanScapes will happily help you dispose of your food containers at our recycle stations. So grab a tasty treat, enjoy some delicious food and come help us “re-spawn-sibly” celebrate the return of DAYS.CMYK.RVS 0914 LAM the salmon to ourNEIL.ePROOF.SALMON local hatchery. 40.15551.THUR.0929.1-3P-SQ.LAM

SISTER CITY SALMONDAYS.ORG | ISSAQUAHCHAMBER.COM
Help welcome visitors from Issaquah’s sister city Chefchaouen, Morocco The city of Issaquah and Salmon Days Festival are happy to continue our relationship with our sister city, Chefchaouen, Morocco. Visitors to Morocco remember the mountains and desert, the bright colors and intricate designs and details. Through our Sister City, Chefchaouen, Issaquah has developed rich relationships and learned a great
appreciation for their culture. The two communities have exchanged students, artists and governmental representatives for nearly a decade. You may have seen the ‘Blue Door’ outside Issaquah’s City Hall. It is a gift of friendship, a symbol of, and testament to the deep relationship with Chefchaouen. And throughout Chefchaouen, in return there is a ‘fishy’ presences around
their city hall, offices and homes. This year, Issaquah is honored to host three representatives from Chefchaouen, a dignitary and two artists. Meet them in person, view beautiful artistry and help us continue the friendships between the northwest and Morocco. They’re looking forward to saying hello at their booth on East Sunset Way.

FIELD OF FUN SALMONDAYS.ORG | ISSAQUAHCHAMBER.COM
Find your favorite at the Field of Fun It’s more fun than you can shake a stick at.
Kids Stage Ongoing acts throughout the day will entertain children and children-atheart with singing, dancing, juggling, magic and more. Ronald McDonald will also be stopping by each day for an amazing act! Thank you to Fred Meyer and McDonald’s for their continued support.
Arena Sports Soccer Experience Come and watch the Sounders of the future. Arena Sports will bring its giant soccer field again. Kids can get instruction, scrimmage or just run around and be kids. In its third year at Salmon Days, this has become a great attraction.
Human Hamster Balls Just as cool as it sounds, these are some big balls. How big? Big enough for 200 hamsters or one kid. Banic Chiropractic is the hero of this event for bringing it back again. Head over early or late because the lines get long... or buy your own.
Fish Prints Children have been making Fish Prints at Salmon Days for years and some have created quite the collection. Some make it to the fridge, others get laminated — what will you do with yours? Seattle Chil-

FIELD OF FUN SALMONDAYS.ORG | ISSAQUAHCHAMBER.COM
dren’s Bellevue Clinic and Surgery Center continues to bring this tradition to Salmon Days, where kids can show their creativity with paint... and fish... and paint brushes... and paper.
Toymakers Workshop Join our great volunteers and Rick Hartman, professional toy maker, for a DIY toy-making project. Move throughout the various stations sawing, hammering and putting together your own unique toy that you can take with you.
SAMBICA Inflatable Zone However many inflatables you think we’re bringing to Salmon Days this year, there’s probably more bigger-than-life inflatables that you
can jump, climb, slide and joust on. Children of all ages will enjoy bouncing good times (BGTs).
Mini Trains Just as cool as their larger counterparts but much smaller. The whole team at Allegro Pediatrics (formerly Pediatric Associates) is looking forward to having you all aboard. Might want to stop by the food court first, as the line will be pretty long (but worth it).
Springfree Trampolines Jumping on a trampoline with springs is kind of like using a payphone these days. Sure, it suits the purpose if you can find one, but new technology has made them mostly obsolete. Come by for some Flippin’ Fun!
Puget Sound DockDogs Bring the whole family to watch our four-legged friends compete at long jump, high jump and speed retrieve. Depending on the weather, you may or may not want to be standing in the splash zone. This Fintastic event is once again Ohfishally spawnsored by Alpine Animal Hospital and Cascade Water Alliance.
The Quiet Room This is the place to be when your young ones need to be cleaned, changed and fed before heading back to the festival. Our partner, Friends of Youth, is happy to support and service this peaceful getaway.

Over 120 Years of Selling Experience
About... This family owned business, opened its doors July of 1982 in a small portable building (600sq.ft.) with the help of good friends. Their beginnings were very sparse with catalog books, a hand truck and a beat up delivery truck. With six basic white, low end appliances placed on the showroom floor King and Bunnys was opened. King and Bunnys, now many years later, has had four remodels and expanded to 3200 sq.ft. with a beautiful showroom displaying over 200 major home appliances. They have a local warehouse with over 400 units in stock, all available for immediate delivery.
King and Bunnys is located on Sunset Blvd (SR900) in Renton, WA, just 2.5 miles east from I-405. Three miles away is the Boeing plant were the 737 and the 737MAX airplanes are manufactured and next door to Boeing is Paccar where Kenworth trucks are manufactured. The employment base just in that local area is over 12,000 employees. King and Bunnys is entrenched in the local community; they believe in giving back. Throughout the years King and Bunny, as well as their team members, have volunteered, been involved with service clubs, chambers, sport clubs and civic organizations. King and Bunnys support auctions, local events, schools, charities, service clubs and much more.
King and Bunnys is a member of Nationwide, a 3000 member buying and marketing group, whose collective buying power is over 15 billion dollars annually. This appliance buying power is equal to Sears or Home Depot and Lowes combined. Hence, King and Bunnys “WHAMMER DEAL”! King and Bunnys offer competitive prices, knowledgeable team members, in stock inventory, fast deliveries, quality installation, doing business with integrity, honesty, and caring customer service.
