There has been some disagreement among council members, but Vance has said the city should be able to complete work on Klahanie-area roads without taking on any debt. Many cities sell municipal bonds to fund capital improvement projects. Sammamish is in the largely unique position of having virtually no debt.

“We are the envy of other cities in terms of our financial success,” Vance said, noting the city incorporated just 16 years ago, but said a lot of infrastructure has gone up in that time without any accompanying debt.

“We need to keep our finances in order so we can continue that,” he said.

Vance touched on one other traffic front, saying Sammamish officials need to try to ensure road improvements reach outside the city boundaries.

That may mean working with Redmond, King County or Issaquah.

Vance said Sammamish is set to receive a new Sound Transit Park & Ride on the north end of the city. Neither Sound Transit nor city officials have identified a specific location and Vance said that is a question that will face the next council.

The new park and ride is supposed to hold between 200 and 300 vehicles.

Regarding development, Vance said Washington will introduce stricter storm water rules in 2017.

“I think that’s going to drive some developers to move a little faster whether we like it or not,” Vance said.

Would it be in the city’s interest to enforce the new rules ahead of time? Vance said Sammamish only could enforce rules already on the books. He also argued the Town Center area, which might see the most activity, already has stringent storm water rules in place.

Vance said besides the Town Center projects already underway, such as the new Metropolitan Market, there are one to three projects in some stage of planning. He would not provide details.

Vance, 64, is retired from the communications and publishing industry. He is married.

Hornish From Page 2 GMA requires cities to allow some development.

But Hornish said Sammamish officials could do a much better job of meeting the GMA requirements and preserving what it is residents like about Sammamish. He said the city often seems to go out of its way to appease developers.

“They’ve never pushed back, or at least acted like they are not afraid to push back,” Hornish said.

“They are reactive instead of pro-active.”

Worthy development does not have to mean clear-cutting trees or hurting local waterways, Hornish said. As for the tree-retention ordinance now under consideration, he said he believes it’s a worthy start but it doesn’t go far enough.

“It doesn’t strike the right balance between long-range growth and keeping Sammamish Sammamish,” he said.

While growth is the key issue for Hornish, he said he has tried to touch on some less talked about questions. He said he hopes Sammamish can come up with some

SAMMAMISH REVIEW sort of policy regarding Tent City 4. The homeless encampment travels around the Eastside, but has had a hard time recently in finding spots to set up. Tent City 4 spent a good part of the summer on a closed King County road off Interstate 90 in Issaquah.

“I don’t think we need to make it easier for them to come here, but I think we want to help people who need help,” he said. “We cannot turn our backs on the homeless.”

Hornish is aware he is fighting an uphill battle in taking on the incumbent mayor and the high visibility that goes with that position.

“But I’ve never been one to shy away from a challenge,” he said.

Hornish said that as led by Vance, city government has fostered some kind of disconnect with residents.

“There is a lack of transparency,” he said.

“We can be a little more forthcoming as a city.”

Hornish, 56, is an attorney in private practice, but has experience in the entertainment industry. He is working to start a new cable TV network with comedian Jeff Foxworthy. Hornish is married with two children.

Residents urged to submit nominations for SAMMI Awards Nominations are now being accepted for the 2016 SAMMI Awards, the city’s homegrown awards program.

SAMMI stands for Sammamish Acknowledging Magnificent Moments of Inspiration. This is the 15th year for the annual event, which is run by a nonprofit group formed

in 2001 following the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

The idea was to recognize outstanding individuals who show exceptional leadership, compassion and a strong sense of community, Cynthia Baumert, executive director of the SAMMI Awards Foundation, said in a press release.

Nominations are reviewed by a volunteer panel of judges and are evaluated based on their story rather than the number of nominations.

Nominations are accepted in the following categories: Youth Spirit, Environmental Stewardship, Circle of Service, Community Spirit and Courage. The deadline for nominations is Dec. 1.

The awards ceremony is set for 7 p.m. March 12 at the Sammamish Boys and Girls Club, 825 228th Ave. N.E. The event is free and open to the public.

Ninth annual Sammamish Arts Fair set for Oct. 10-11

By Tom Corrigan tcorrigan@isspress.com More than 30 artists will take part Oct. 10-11 in the ninth annual Sammamish Arts Fair, sponsored by the Sammamish Arts Commission.

When the show started, it featured almost exclusively Sammamish artists, said Pamela Wickard, contributing artist and spokeswoman for the fair committee.

Nowadays, artists come to the show from all over the Eastside, added Wickard, who is from Snoqualmie.

Featured artists also come from Redmond, Issaquah and similar communities.

The show is a juried show, Wickard added, which means the works in the show were selected and approved by a committee.

That helps ensure better quality, she said.

“The Arts Fair is run by the artists,” which she said she believes also adds to the

maps.

“I love maps,” Wickard said.

The fair also will include demonstrations by a wood carver, or the creation of a wooden installation, Wickard said. A street artist will work with aerosol paints.

Letters to the Editor Elect Christie Malchow and Tom Hornish for City Council

I have been involved with the City Council and staff of Sammamish for many years. I have watched the way the city has operated.

Ramiro Valderrama has always been very receptive to me as a citizen when I needed support in changing our city code to reflect a more commonsense approach to development and the environment. He is very well-informed and is not afraid to ask questions that need answers, whether it be from the staff, other government agencies or his fellow council members. He really represents the citizens first and foremost!

Unfortunately, over the years, I find him a rare breed and in the minority too much of the time. This year, we have a chance to add other like-minded candidates to the council, Christie Malchow and Tom Hornish. Together these individuals will listen to citizen input, ask the right questions and conduct city affairs in an open and transparent manner, while considering our tax dollars as sacred funds!

Vote for Tom Vance to remain on City Council When I think of the characteristics that I appreciate in an elected official: ethical behavior, consistency and leadership that achieves the best possible outcomes, I think of councilman and current Mayor Tom Vance.

Supporting Tom Vance for City Council comes easy for me. Over the years, I have followed Tom’s leadership as both councilman and mayor.

His concern and work to manage our growth has been and is his biggest priority. With Tom on the council and as our mayor, Sammamish continues to be a safe, desirable, familyoriented community.

Tom is a true environmentalist. He was among the first this year to be endorsed by Washington Conservation Voters — not the first time he has been endorsed by that organization. His leadership on the tree-retention policy and his goal of “no net loss of trees” is coupled with his goal of increasing our tree canopy with our new urban forestry initiative is exactly what we need. And Tom was a leader in the effort to protect our sensitive wetlands and open space over the past four years.

Tom’s work with Issaquah leadership on the Klahanie annexation made it possible for Sammamish to improve our southern commutes. A rebuilt Issaquah-Fall City Road will help commutes on the other southern commuter routes. Now Tom is eager to work with King County, Redmond and the department of transportation to improve Sahalee Way and commutes all the way to SR 520.

I know that Tom is very proud that one of his particular goals, the building of a new community and aquatic center, is actually happening during his time as mayor.

I am struck by Tom’s genuineness, resourcefulness and respect for people, especially when their opinions might differ from his own. His ability

to work across city boundaries is well-known. This all speaks to his grounded sense of self and his wide understanding of the issues that impact our community.

Tom Vance has served the city of Sammamish well over the past four years.

I cannot imagine any other outcome than Tom remaining a reassuring and reliable presence in the Sammamish City Council.

I support him for all of those efforts in behalf of our citizens.

I would like to add, though that much of my support for Ramiro is because of his caring and compassionate approach to governance, he stands tall on the City Council for his sincerity in working to solve the problems that the majority of us are experiencing. Vote for Mark Cross for City Council Let’s set the record straight on the upcoming election. Christie Malchow and her supporters seem to be new to the area and therefore confused about how development happens here. The city council does not “rubber stamp” development or allow “massive rampant growth.”

In Washington, we are guided by the Growth Management Act, which divides growth between cities with an allotment for which they must plan.

The council sets policy and regulation through public processes and in response to public comment. Ironically, the destruction of the environment we are currently seeing in Sammamish is due, in part, to the pro property-rights agenda and lobbying efforts by members of Citizens For Sammamish during the updates of our Critical Areas Ordinance and Shoreline Master Program. Malchow belongs to this group.

Citizens for Sammamish successfully lobbied to weaken former regulations protecting the unique environment of the plateau.

While it is true that she and her neighbors recently

won an appeal before the hearing examiner, their appeal was based on road standards and variances (which directly benefited and affected their neighborhood) — it had nothing to do with environmental issues.

Development is approved by city staff and their interpretation of city code, not the City Council.

This is why it is so important to have a strongly worded code with none of the “flexibility” that developers use to bypass environmental regulations. I trust Mark Cross because he has experience governing our city and he is a proven protector of the environment.

‘Snapshots’ reminds us what is important in life Two thumbs up for Village Theatre’s “Snapshots,” playing in Issaquah through Oct. 18 (Oct. 23 to Nov. 15 in Everett). This wellwritten and talent-filled play showcasing Steven Schwartz music (think

october 8, 2015 ‘Wicked’) is about a young couple who gradually grow apart after many years of marriage.

The plot walks us through sweet moments in life, with intriguing lyrics, tight harmonies and Broadway voices, really hitting home things that matter in the long run. While many media champion doing what is convenient — which often means divorce, this drama encourages us to each look at making our relationships better. Say we love each other a little more often, have conversations that are meaningful, work a little less at the office and find ways to keep the love alive as the decades pile up.

Relationships don’t stay strong without work. Get a ticket to see “Snapshots”

before it ends, not only to support programs that support strong families, but also to motivate us to look closely at our own.

On a personal note, at 30 years, my husband and I know it’s a battle worth fighting for. Somewhere between meeting in our young years at BYU, raising kids, enduring health trials and navigating busy careers, we’ve pulled away from each other many times and find frequent three-day get-aways together and date nights sprinkled in between help pull us back toward each other. Sometimes it takes counseling, God or a softened heart, but that work is a small price to pay and “Snapshots” is an entertaining reminder.

Safon, a senior at Redmond High School, has on record many demonstrations of her leadership at school and volunteerism in her community, according to a news release from DAWN. At school, Safon started a literary journal and club of interested students, served her school community by arriving early every morning to greet every student and staff, was her junior class vice president last year, and is currently ASB vice president.

She has volunteered at Camp Sealth on Vashon Island for the past two years and this past spring, Safon volunteered to help run an after-school program called “Girls on the Run,” which teaches fifth-grade girls about leadership and positive self-awareness via a 5K race.

Initial reports did not say what was taken. Beaver Lake to receive 2,500 large hatchery rainbow trout

Anglers will soon have an opportunity to catch large trout this fall in Beaver Lake, thanks to the release of about 2,500 hatchery rainbows averaging about two pounds each.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will release the fish Oct. 14. To facilitate fish planting, the agency will close the Beaver Lake access site at sunset Oct. 13 and reopen the site at sunrise Oct. 15. Beaver Lake, however, will remain open to fishing while the access site is closed.

The trout are part of an educational display at the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery. The department releases trout into Beaver Lake each year to enhance recreational opportunity, said Justin Spinelli, fishery biologist for the department.

Beaver Lake is best fished by small boat, although anglers also can be successful fishing from

shore, Spinelli said.

The access site is most easily reached by way of East Beaver Lake Drive Southeast, off Southeast 24th Street in Sammamish.

Tia Beck’s wonder goal leads Crusaders soccer to key win

By Neil Pierson npierson@ sammamishreview.com It often takes a highlyskilled goal scorer to come up with the clutch play in a match between two highly capable defensive teams.

Enter Eastside Catholic High School senior midfielder Tia Beck, who seized an opportunity in the Crusaders’ Oct. 1 home game against the Lakeside Lions.

In the 19th minute, Beck took a pass from teammate Samantha Toll in the middle of the field. Beck had a defender on her hip and was about 40 yards from goal, but glanced up momentarily to see Lakeside goalkeeper Maddie Walsh out of position.

“I saw the keeper was off her line, so I thought I’d have a go at it,” said Beck, who has orally committed to play next year at Gonzaga University.

“Keepers tend to go off their line and I catch them off guard.”

q Skyline maintained its grasp on first place in Class 4A KingCo Conference football, using five first-half touchdowns to dominate the visiting Redmond Mustangs, 46-14, in an Oct. 2 outing.

Quarterback Blake Gregory connected on first-half touchdown passes of 62 yards to Jake Pendergast and 1 yard to Rashaad Boddie, and Danny Sinatro had a 27-yard interception return TD as the Spartans (5-0 KingCo) led 37-7 at the half. Kicker Jack Crane made field goals of 30, 39 and 24 yards. q Eastlake had no trouble moving to 4-0 in KingCo play, hammering the Newport Knights, 55-9, on Oct. 2 at Eastlake High School.

Newport took an early 3-0 lead, but the Wolves responded with 34 straight points before halftime.

Quarterback Mark Whitley had a hand in five touchdowns on the night, throwing scores of 24 and 16 yards to Parker Lester, along with a 19-yard strike to Cole Nason. Whitley also ran for two scores.

Cross country: Eastlake turns in strong times

The Eastlake High School cross country teams had several good performances at the Twilight Invitational, held Oct. 3 at Cedarcrest Golf Course in Marysville.

finished fourth and the boys were sixth in a field of 65 teams. Sophomore Brooke Manson was 12th overall in the girls race (18 minutes, 46 seconds) and sophomore Pia Richards was third in 18:14, the third-fastest 5-kilometer time in school history.

Eastlake’s boys got three top-10 times: Nate Pendleton was eighth in 15:42 to set a new sophomore school record; Adamson Bryant was sixth in 15:38, the third-fastest mark in Eastlake history; and Nathan Pixler won the boys race in 15:11, good for a new school record and the fastest 4A time in the state this season. q Also at the Twilight Invitational, Skyline’s girls took third place and the boys were fifth.

Maizy Brewer topped the Spartans’ girls lineup with a 10th-place time of 18:35, followed by Jennifer Tidball (33rd, 19:45) and Callie Juetten (37th, 19:49).

Sophomore Griffin Ganz led the Skyline boys, finishing 23rd in 16:06, followed by Will Kimball (29th, 16:16) and Makennan Hurd (35th, 16:19).

Volleyball: Issaquah comes back on Eastlake Issaquah rallied from a 2-1 deficit to earn a 3-2 victory over visiting Eastlake in a Class 4A KingCo Conference volleyball match Sept. 30.

The Wolves had the lead after convincing wins of 25-12 and 25-18 in the second and third sets, only to see the Eagles take the last two sets and the match, 25-18 and 15-9.

As crucial as Beck’s goal was, the other Crusaders did their part to preserve the win, the team’s fourth shutout in five games.

Brayton chalks up his team’s defensive improvement to one key shift – moving senior Brooke Weedman from forward to center back.

Weedman volunteered to change positions after the Crusaders lost two of their first three matches.

“Her and Bailey (Haner) have been the difference in the back,” Brayton said.

“We had 10 goals scored against in three games and we’ve had one in the last five or six. A lot more maturity back there, so it’s been great.”

Lakeside managed to take only three shots in the game, but one of them was a quality chance that forced a great save from EC goalkeeper Leah Day. Lakeside’s Eliana Blachman sent teammate Julia Miller behind the defense in the 62nd minute. Miller got off a shot from the top of the penalty area, but Day had charged forward to cut down the angle, and got a hand on the ball to deflect it wide.

The Crusaders will try to continue their hot streak this week against the two teams ahead of them in the Sound Division – Seattle Prep and Holy Names.

EC played Holy Names Oct. 6, results that were too late for publication, and travels to face Prep at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at Seattle’s Lower Woodland Park.

Beck said the team has found its stride after some early-season struggles.

“We’ve just started to work a lot harder as a team, and we’ve been working on our passes and our through balls, and we’ve been really dangerous on the attack,” she said.

Brayton said he used a flat defensive formation in the back in the previous meeting with Seattle Prep, and the Crusaders held the Panthers scoreless for 70 minutes.

“I think we can play with them,” the coach added. “Our defense is good enough now that we don’t have to do anything crazy on defense.”

“And then for whatever reason, we go away from that sometimes. It’s disappointing when we create opportunities and we don’t finish the way that we need to.”

Skyline peppered the Mount Si goal throughout the match, but senior goalkeeper Nellie Joselyn came up with nine saves, including a tremendous onehanded stop on Lindsey Fujiwara’s stinging drive late in second-half stoppage time.

The Wildcats’ defense bent but didn’t break, and Joselyn credited her teammates for preserving the win.

“Honestly, it had a lot to do with my defense,” she said. “They were working their butts off all night long, especially (center back) Camryn Buck. She was giving it everything that she had.”

Skyline’s Alessandra Zonta nearly scored in the 10th minute after stealing the ball and breaking into the penalty area. But her shot glanced off the nearside post.

Mount Si had a 12thminute goal negated by the offside flag, but Weidenbach put her

“I heard the people in the wall go, ‘Let’s start jumping,’” Weidenbach explained. “So I was like, ‘OK, near post on the ground sounds like a good idea.’ I was just hoping I’d time it right so I wouldn’t hit their feet.”

The 1-0 lead nearly lasted until halftime, but Skyline struck for the equalizer in the 39th minute when Emma Rohleder collected a long ball down the left sideline and crossed to Julia Mitchell, who one-touched a shot past Joselyn.

But the Wildcats responded just two minutes into the second half.

Makayla Turpin’s corner kick from the right side found an unmarked Fischer at the near post, and Fischer buried her chance.

Skyline’s defensive group, which is comprised almost entirely of first-year varsity players, wasn’t to blame for the two goals allowed, Braman said.

“You look at the goals we give up today, that’s not about my back four.

That’s about our response on set pieces.

“We really like the contributions they’re making,” he said of the Spartans’ back line. “They’re talking well, they’re adjusting and they’re working as a unit.

We just need some maturity.”
