Second Saturday Films: Cyrano de Bergerac, 1956 All ages

Edmund Rostand’s ribald, rollicking tale of a sensitive, sword-wielding poet with a rather large nose who writes love letters to the damsel he adores on behalf of his friend has never been filmed or played better than this. Jose Ferrer, as Cyrano, won an Oscar for the role which defined his career. This movie is for everyone who loves comedy, sword-fighting, damsels in distress, heroics and love that goes unrequited. • Saturday, Dec. 8 • 7 and 9 p.m. showings • Issaquah’s Historic Train Depot • Free, donation accepted for coffee and snacks • email fhop32@comcast.net

Read & Discuss: Remarkable Creatures

Tracy Chevalier, author of Girl With a Pearl Earring turns her astute gaze to Regency England and an unlikely fossil hunter named Mary Anning, whose discoveries exploded the scientific and secular worlds. Rembrandt and the Art of the 17th Century Adults & teens Opera Preview: La Cenerentola Adults & teens

After the death of Napoleon, the great French writer Stendahl declared: “The King is Dead, but a new conqueror has shown himself to the world....” Stendahl was of course referring to Gioachino Rossini (17921868), the most popular opera composer the world had ever seen. Rossini wrote 38 operas in 20 years, his first when he was only 18. The sweetest of these is his version of the Cinderella fairy tale, only Rossini’s retelling includes no magic, just one hilarious and irresistible tune after another. Presented by Norm Hollingshead. • Tuesday, Jan. 8 • 7 p.m. • Issaquah Library, 10 W. Sunset Way • Free • 425-392-5430

Join art historian Susan Olds for an introduction to the art of the 17th century and the Dutch Masters. The presentation will focus on the paintings and lives of the Dutch Masters and the many changes in European art during the Protestant Reformation. The 17th Century was a pivotal time when Dutch genre paintings, landscapes, botanical illustration, landscape painting, portraiture and still life painting flourished. Major Dutch artists include Rembrandt, Vermeer, Fans Hall, Van Dyck, Rachel Ruysh and Judith Leyster. The program will conclude with an overview of historical novels set in 17th Century Holland. • Tuesday, Feb. 5 • 7 p.m. • Issaquah Library, 10 W. Sunset Way • Free • 425-392-5430

Read & Discuss: Empty Family Stories All ages

Colm Toibin’s deft hand crafts a powerful collection of stories that takes us from contemporary Ireland, to 1970’s Spain, to 19th century England. His characters are complex and all too real; their foibles, struggles, and deepest desires all flow gorgeously upon the page. The fragility of relationships is a key theme for Toibin, as well as the nature of love in its many forms. • Monday, Feb. 11 • 6:30-8 p.m. • Issaquah Library, 10 W. Sunset Way • Free • 425-392-5430

Opera Preview: La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini (1958-1924) Adults and teens La Boheme is written by the most popular opera composer of our time. Almost all of his operas end sadly but that seems to attract rather than repel opera audiences around the world. His fourth opera, La Boheme (1896), is the saddest of all, but in this opera the deadly villain is not another human, but rather poverty and disease. Puccini’s genius
