Rembrandt and the Art of the 17th Century Adults & teens Opera Preview: La Cenerentola Adults & teens
After the death of Napoleon, the great French writer Stendahl declared: “The King is Dead, but a new conqueror has shown himself to the world....” Stendahl was of course referring to Gioachino Rossini (17921868), the most popular opera composer the world had ever seen. Rossini wrote 38 operas in 20 years, his first when he was only 18. The sweetest of these is his version of the Cinderella fairy tale, only Rossini’s retelling includes no magic, just one hilarious and irresistible tune after another. Join art historian Susan Olds for an introduction to the art of the 17th century and the Dutch Masters. The presentation will focus on the paintings and lives of the Dutch Masters and the many changes in European art during the Protestant Reformation. The 17th Century was a pivotal time when Dutch genre paintings, landscapes, botanical illustration, landscape painting, portraiture and still life painting flourished. Major Dutch artists include Rembrandt, Vermeer, Fans Hall, Van Dyck, Rachel Ruysh and Judith Leyster. Opera Preview: La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini (1958-1924) Adults and teens La Boheme is written by the most popular opera composer of our time. Almost all of his operas end sadly but that seems to attract rather than repel opera audiences around the world. Grab your top hat and goggles for the Steampunk express! What do you get when you mix Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and Edgar Allen Poe with Neil Gaiman, Agatha Christie, Ray Bradbury, Tim Powers, Robert Louis Stevenson and Ridley Scott? You get Steampunk, a curious mixture of futuristic Victorian settings, time and space travel, intrepid inventors, mad scientists, evil top hats, the paranormal, adventurers, sci-fi, fantastic steam-powered machines, corsets, goggles, hot air balloons, passenger dirigibles and mysteries galore. Art historian Susan Olds will trace the beginnings of the movement through Steampunk art, fashion, gadgetry, literature, illustrations and excerpts from various Steampunk novels.
