14 Music Man John Janick, MBA `03, got his start in the music industry working from his college dorm room. Now he leads one of the world’s largest talent management agencies, Interscope Geffen A&M, and credits his MBA from USF for helping him to take his career to the next level.

16 Giving Back: Dr. Anila Jain, `81, & Roger Frazee, `71 Dr. Jain was one of the first USF Ambassadors back in the early 80s. She and her life partner Roger Frazee, CPA, have always maintained a strong relationship with our alma mater as dedicated supporters of USF, particularly of the SarasotaManatee regional institution. They both served terms as president of the USF Alumni Association and regularly advocate on behalf of USF with Florida legislators. These proud Bulls are an excellent example of how alumni can make a lasting impact on USF.

president’s message Hello Alumni, I have a question for you: What’s your number? Mine is 1019. I am the 1019th person to commit to being a Life Member of your USF Alumni Association. Hundreds of you have joined me in this commitment over the past few months and for that, I thank you. I thank you for making a lifelong commitment to USF and its continued success. By becoming a Life Member, you join an army of thousands of alumni and friends who make up the heart and soul of Bulls Country. So what is your number? You can find it next to your name in the Life Member Honor Roll that begins on Page 19. I had the pleasure of attending the inaugural USF Fast 56 Awards dinner earlier this month. It was a fantastic experience to have such an incredible blend of success, innovation and Bull Pride together in one room. If you’re not familiar with this new program, you should know that USF will now annually recognize and honor the 56 fastest growing Bull-owned or led businesses. With hundreds of nominations, it was motivating, a bit humbling, but not surprising, to see so many successful alumni putting their passion to the test and succeeding in their life’s work. You can see the full list of inaugurees at USFalumni.org/fast56finalists. I can’t wait to see which companies will be in the 2014 class of USF Fast 56. Speaking of successful Bulls, I think you’ll enjoy reading in this issue about MBA alumnus, John Janick, who is leading one of the largest talent management agencies in the world, Interscope Geffen A&M. He got his start in the music industry in college and is now one of its major players. I wonder how many of you remember Hall of Fame swimmer and author, Nancy Bercaw, who is profiled on our Athletics page. She has written a warm and touching book about her late father, Dr. Beauregard Bercaw, a former USF professor and neuroscientist, and his lifelong battle with Alzheimer’s, which was both professional and ultimately, personal. Next month thousands of new USF graduates will join the ranks of alumni, just as a few select others will receive their acceptance notifications into USF. Regardless of whether you graduated 50 years ago, or if you are starting USF this year, your USF Alumni Association is here to connect students and alumni to this great and growing university. There is truly something for everyone, whether it’s Homecoming, networking, mentoring or assisting with advocacy or scholarships, we are here to help you find a way to stay connected to USF. Once a Bull, always a Bull. As my term comes to an end, I would like to say that it has been my honor and pleasure to serve as your 2012-2013 USF Alumni Association president. I look forward to seeing you soon on campus or at an event. When I do, don’t be surprised if I ask you, “What’s your number?” Go Bulls,

Kimberly Choto, `92 & M.A. `02 Life Member #1019

From the Executive Director Bill McCausland, MBA `96 Executive Director, USF Alumni Association

A Look Back; Then Ahead

H

aving recently marked my first year as executive director, I reflect with great fondness on the many proud Bulls I have had the pleasure of working with as we collaborate to evolve the mission of your USF Alumni Association. Our momentum has shifted and picked up speed, and yet our energy remains steadfastly focused on supporting the university, connecting with students, engaging alumni and protecting our great alma mater. Your USF Alumni Association is a different organization than it was when I arrived 14 short months ago. Different in the awareness of our purpose, different in the way we are perceived, and most importantly, different in how we work to help you strengthen your relationship with USF. That’s the reason why we exist. To the volunteers who give so generously of their time to keep the association moving forward in a positive, professional direction – people such as our current board chair Kimberly Choto, board secretary Jon Smith and board member Andy Coe – I thank you for your commitment to the cause. To those alumni outside of the Tampa Bay area who keep the Bull Pride alive across the country – like Janet

Foster in Los Angeles and Greg Morgan in Chicago – thank you for keeping the faith. Our chapters and societies are growing in both size and influence locally and nationally. Finally, to the hundreds of alumni volunteers who have helped in so many ways, thank you for sharing your love for USF. Your USF Alumni Association truly appreciates all that you do. As the ranks of USF’s alumni grow with each passing commencement, I become ever more confident that our new focus serves our university well. We are clear in our purpose to find new ways for each of you, as proud Bulls, to stay connected to each other and to our alma mater. You can help USF be strong and resilient in the face of the future. As we move ahead, let us always remember our core philosophies: Bulls Make an Impact Bulls Stay Together Bulls Share Their Pride Bulls Protect USF Yes, there is a lot to accomplish to meet our ambitious goals. But we are USF Bulls; we don’t fear a challenge. I ask you to stand with us to help ensure that future generations of Bulls have a proud legacy to follow. We were students once; we will be alumni forever. I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to lead you in this important mission.

USF Licensed Technologies Selected for National Innovation Expo

The Rolling Dance Chair and the SkateCase have been selected to be showcased as part of the national 2013 Innovation Expo at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) headquarters in Alexandria, Va., June 21-23, 2013. The University of South Florida licensed technologies are two of only six inventions chosen in the first round of exhibitors. The rolling dance chair, conceived by USF dance instructor Merry Lynn Morris, is a motorized mobility device that, unlike a regular wheelchair, can be controlled using only torso muscles, freeing the user’s arms and hands. The chair allows the user to move in a fluid motion, offering more freedom to dancers with disabilities and supporting their artistic freedom. The technology is the result of collaboration between USF’s College of Engineering and College of The Arts and was recently licensed to Vertec, Inc., a development and manufacturing company that supplies custom, high-tech components for industrial, medical and military applications. As an independent student inventor at USF, Alexei Novtizky created the SkateCase, an innovative design that allows skateboarders to store small electronics and personal items inside the skateboard, and turns the skateboard into a more useful mode of inexpensive, clean transportation. Novtizky partnered with USF, and since graduating has founded Looshes Labs, LLC, to commercialize his technology. The SkateCase was nominated as Innovation of the Year at the 2013 BizTech Awards being held last month in Tampa.

Do you know someone who deserves to be nominated for a USF Alumni Award? Each year, an honoree is selected for each award: Distinguished Alumnus Award – Recognizing a USF alumnus who has reached the pinnacle of success in his or her career or profession. Donald A. Gifford Alumni Service Award – Recognizing an individual who has provided countless hours of service to USF, either through committee work, volunteer hours or other means. Class of `56 Award – Recognizing an individual who did not graduate from USF, but has proven to be a friend of the university by rendering distinguished service over an extended period of time. Outstanding Young Alumnus Award – Recognizing an alumnus 35 years old or younger for his or her career accomplishments and engagement with the university. To nominate yourself or someone else for one of these prestigious awards, please visit USFalumni.org/alumniawards to fill out an online nomination form by 5 p.m. on April 30.

USF St. Petersburg has New Regional Chancellor

Dr. Sophia T. Wisniewska will serve as the new regional chancellor for USF St. Petersburg beginning July 1. Dr. Wisniewska, chancellor of Penn State Brandywine since 2005, is a scholar of Russian language and literature and has extensive experience in key leadership positions in the Penn State System, including her current position where she serves as chancellor of Penn State Brandywine. Additionally Dr. Wisniewska served for six years as dean and chief executive officer at Temple University Ambler. While at Penn State and Temple University, Dr. Wisniewska created innovative academic programs and forged strong relationships with community leaders that strengthened both institutions. “I believe Dr. Wisniewska has the experience and vision to continue the tremendous progress we have witnessed at USF St. Petersburg,” says USF System President Dr. Judy Genshaft. “Her commitment to scholarship, teaching and community engagement will enrich both USFSP and the broader community.”

Planned Gift Benefits USF Sarasota-Manatee College of Hospitality and Technology

Robert Purzycki, of Ipswich, MA, an expert on travel, tourism and the cruise industry, created a deferred gift of $650,000 to support operations and scholarships for graduate students in the USF Sarasota-Manatee College of Hospitality and Technology Leadership (COHTL).

Purzycki, a 1968 USF Geology alumnus, and his late wife, Jeanne, were world travelers and avid cruisers who spent their careers training professional travel agents, hotel administrators, airline managers and members of the travel, hospitality and cruise industries in innovative sales, marketing and customer service techniques. Together, they authored five books on the industry before her death in 2011. “The education I received at USF, nearly a half-century ago, has constantly guided and helped me navigate through the various tangents that have come my way while pursuing careers,” Purzycki said. “I’m proud to support the COHTL program, giving future students a chance to live their dreams.”

Feature John Janick

John Janick, MBA `03, has a knack for finding the music industry’s next big thing.

Music an M F By Karla Jackson, `88

rom the outside, it may look like working in the music industry is all about mingling with famous people, attending swanky award shows and chartering private jets to exotic locales in search of talent. From the inside, where USF MBA alumnus John Janick sits as president and chief operating officer of Interscope Geffen A&M, he’ll tell you that making your mark in the music industry requires long hours, an ear for innovative new sounds and a head for business. “Being famous and going to the Grammys and going to parties is a great thing, but it is also a lot of hard work,” says Janick, 34, who typically attends the music industry’s biggest awards show every year, but shuns its legendary red carpet.“There’s a lot of work behind the scenes that goes into what

14

ALUMNIVOICE | SPRING 2013

everybody sees and hears.” Janick moved into his role at Interscope Geffen in October 2012 after a long and successful career that started when he was an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Florida. “I loved discovering music and turning people onto music they hadn’t really heard before,” he recalls of his college days traveling around Florida to see underground bands in Ybor City, Fort Lauderdale and elsewhere. Inspired by what he discovered, Janick and a friend decided to start a record label, Fueled by Ramen, which they ran from their Gainesville dorm room, while balancing the demands of school. “It was a very organic thing,” Janick says. “We started with a few thousand dollars and never really went to a bank or anything. We

built it from the ground up. Every dollar we made we put back into the company.” Hence the name: Fueled by Ramen, or FBR. “It was about being in college, investing every dollar back into the label and being fueled by the cheapest food you can find: ramen.” One of FBR’s first successes was helping to develop Arizona hard rockers Jimmy Eat World, followed by the label’s first really big break out artist, pop punk band Fall Out Boy. “We sold, over a two-year period, 250,000 albums and we helped build a base for them,”

The first two artists he signed were Cee Lo Green and Bruno Mars. “Between the two of them, they were nominated for something like 10 Grammys that year,” he says. Both artists have since gone on to worldwide acclaim. When the opportunity to run Interscope Geffen A&M came up last year, Janick felt ready to “step out of my comfort zone” and take on the challenge of handling one of the biggest talent management brands in the world, with artists such as Lady Gaga, Eminem and The Rolling Stones, just to namedrop a few of them.

Janick says of Fall Out Boy.“On the next album, they went on to sell 4 million copies around the world and they became a big worldwide artist.” With his label blossoming, Janick wanted to make sure he had the business skills and credibility he would need to become a success in an often cutthroat industry. That’s why he decided to enroll in USF’s MBA program. “Looking back at it, I think maybe the label would’ve progressed faster if I wasn’t doing my 12-plus hours a week of school, but it ended up being great,” he says. During the MBA program he was tasked with creating a business plan that took FBR to the next level. “I had to figure out how I was going to grow the label, find the funding and analyze the business, which was great. With a million other things to do running a label, I don’t think I would’ve done that otherwise.” He finished his MBA in 2003.As FBR continued to evolve, Janick moved the label to New York City to collaborate with Warner Music Group. “After being in New York for a few years, I decided to try something different and restart Elektra, a brand that had a great history, and try to do something new and fresh with it.”

He and his wife Mia and son Beaux escaped the northeast just before Superstorm Sandy hit and have come to love their new home in Los Angeles, especially the weather. Janick was in the Grammy audience in L.A. in February to see Fueled by Ramen artist fun. win awards for Best New Artist and Song of the Year. “I felt like I left [FBR] in a good place,” he says.“I’m a founder so I always want it to do well, and I still work with some of the artists on publishing so I am connected through that.” Now it’s time for him to look ahead. “I’m focused on trying to do a good job at Interscope Geffen A&M,” he says.“Hopefully I’ll be here for a long time figuring out as the music industry changes how we’re going to be ahead of the curve and remain one of the more successful labels.” Janick’s musical tastes are as eclectic as ever, with everything from Interscope artists Imagine Dragons and Lana Del Ray, to other labels’ artists like Mumford and Sons and Tame Impala, in rotation on his iPod. “I like things that are a little bit left of center,” he says, sounding a lot like the hungry young man of 16 years ago, always in search of a new sound.

Giving Back: Dr. Anila Jain & Roger Frazee

We’re Fanatics When It Comes to Our Bulls Dr. Anila Jain and Roger Frazee tagteam their support of USF as passionate advocates and generous donors.

Dr. Jain in 1981 as a USF Ambassador

16

D

r. Anila Jain ’81 and Roger Frazee ’71 both attended the University of South Florida as undergraduates. He, raised in nearby Palmetto, attended thanks to the GI Bill and double majored in Accounting and Finance. She – born in India, raised in Manatee County, and taught the importance of education by her Fulbright scholar mother (also a USF alumna) – immersed herself in the college experience, including being one of the first USF Ambassadors and joining the Kappa Delta sorority, which she now serves as the chairman of its Foundation Board of Directors. A recipient of the American Medical Women’s Association’s National Community Service Award, Dr. Jain credits USF with giving her a well-rounded education and a balanced approach to life that helped her through both graduate and medical school. She also points out that her most enduring USF relationship – of some 34 years – is with Joe Tomaino, the founding executive director of the USF Alumni Association, who told her, “When you graduate, don’t forget your university.” It’s certainly a lesson she took to heart and has acted upon ever since. Eventually these two proud Bulls settled into careers in Manatee County and became actively involved in the local chapter of the USF Alumni Association, advocating not only for the Tampa campus but also for the establishment of the Sarasota-Manatee campus. “There is such a need for higher education in this area, and USF Sarasota-Manatee alumni stay here when they graduate, unlike other campuses,” Dr. Jain says. “Roger and I are proud that we both served on the first Brunch on the Bay committee and celebrated our 19th annual fundraiser brunch in 2012.” In the years since, each has served as chapter and national Alumni Association president as well as on various USF organization boards. For these two, the work has always been a shared passion—and a team effort: “It didn’t matter who held what position; we did everything together,” Roger says. Advocacy is a common theme across all of the ways these two professionals serve, and they encourage every alum they meet to be strong advocates for their alma mater. Roger, who has been recognized for his services to the university with the Alumni Association’s

ALUMNIVOICE | SPRING 2013

Donald A. Gifford Alumni Service Award, was among those instrumental in bringing to USF the electronic advocacy system that flooded Florida representatives’ and senators’ offices with 50,000 messages of support for higher education funding during last year’s legislative session. “When you have more than a quarter of a million alumni united in a single cause, that’s a force to be reckoned with,” he says. Dr. Jain also contributes generously to USF through outright and deferred gifts. In fact, she has established multiple endowed funds to support the USF System in various ways. Two of the funds are dedicated to USF Athletics. “We’re fanatics when it comes to our Bulls,” Dr. Jain says. “We support USF Athletics because topnotch teams give you political power in Tallahassee and that equals funding,” says Roger. The Drs. Anila, Mona, and Kailash Jain Endowed Fund in Women’s Health allows USF Health to research and improve women’s health initiatives. It’s a cause close to Dr. Jain’s heart, as she comes from a family of physicians and is active in medical missions. Two separate Dr. Anila Jain & Roger Frazee/ Dr. Mona & Kailash Jain Endowed Funds support scholarships through the Alumni Association and at USF Sarasota-Manatee, because, as Roger explains it, they “love seeing a student’s eyes light up” when they realize the future opportunities that a college education will open to them. The funds also bear Dr. Jain’s parents’ names, she says, to honor them for teaching her “the importance of education in following your dreams.” Her mother, Dr. Mona Jain, and father, Kailash, are also proud members of the USF Alumni Association. Dr. Jain’s personal accomplishments and dedicated service have been recognized with USF’s Distinguished Alumni Award, among many other community service and professional honors. But it’s about the work and the community impact for Dr. Jain, not the accolades. Describing her approach to philanthropy, she says she’s always been guided by her grandfather’s advice to “do whatever you can to make a difference,” whether that’s giving of your money, your time or your talents. “No matter the amount or form of your gift,” she says, “it will make a difference in the lives of USF students.” ®

Roundhouse Creative Finds its Heart at USF St. Petersburg

By Tom Scherberger, USF St. Petersburg

A

ndrew and Brooke Lee are wedded to the USF St. Petersburg Graphic Design program in more ways than one. They met as classmates, fell in love, married and were members of the program’s first graduating class in 2004. Now they are running their own design firm, Roundhouse Creative, in St. Petersburg and are giving back to the program that gave them so much. Last year, the couple, pictured above, took on Joseph Nunez, right, as an intern. When he graduated at the end of the spring semester, they hired him. Now they have their second intern, Deveraux Harrington, `13. “We needed some help and we wanted to reach out and give back to USF,” Andrew says. They both benefitted from internships as students: he worked at a small studio and she worked at a magazine in Clearwater. “That was incredibly helpful,” Andrew says. When he graduated, Andrew recalls, he was hired at the studio where he worked, just as Nunez was last year.

“I’m thrilled that we’re able to give back to the program that helped get us to this very exciting place in our careers,” Brooke says. “Each intern that we’ve worked with has really impressed us – and reaffirms our belief in the importance of the Graphic Design program to not only USFSP, but to St. Pete as an arts community.” They started Roundhouse four years after graduating. Brooke, who grew up in Sebring, was working at Florida Trend magazine and Andrew was “getting more freelance work than I could handle by myself.” So they joined forces and created Roundhouse, working at a small studio near downtown St. Petersburg. They soon outgrew that space. In December they celebrated the opening of their new studio at 1980 Central Avenue in St. Petersburg’s first net-zero commercial building, which means it will generate as much or more electricity as it uses. Andrew grew up in Riverview and had taken classes at USF Tampa but “hadn’t spent much time in St. Petersburg before that.” A professor steered him toward USFSP. He remembers seeing a school of dolphins swim by the library. “I thought, I could spend some time here! It’s a fantastic campus.” They also fell in love with St. Petersburg. “It’s the hub of the region for art, culture, good food. The net-zero building really ties into the city’s forward thinking brand. It reaffirms that we should continue to be here and invest in our business because we think St. Pete is a special place,” he says. He also enjoys returning to the campus, whether to judge an art competition, shoot video for the USFSP website or to speak to classes. He finds students nervous about the shaky economy, and offers encouragement: “There are a few industries that seem immune to the economic troubles and I believe web-related content development and app is just growing so rapidly. We started Roundhouse Creative during the absolute worst economic times. I feel really encouraged by the fact that we have been able to grow year to year and we see an upswing in the future. The success we’ve enjoyed was propelled by the education we received at USF St. Pete.” ®

Blast from the Past

And They Say the Harlem Shake is Silly‌ Students did the Twist, the Locomotion, the Freddy and who knows what else when it was time to get down on the dance floor in 1964, in the photo at right. The dance pictured above, held in 1968 outside the old University Center, was called the Spring Syndrome, because the idea was that it was supposed to help curb the urge to skip class when the weather turned nice. My favorite memories from `67-`71: Dances at the U.C., Alpha Hall and gym. I met my husband at one of them. Oral interp classes with Mr. Galati and Dr. Popovich; friends from Gamma 5 West; hoping someone would be there to open the door to the stairwell when curfew was missed; standing in line to register for classes; the list could go on and on. Marina Richardson Blystone, `71 I grew so much as a person from the experiences I had as a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and being a resident assistant in Delta Hall 2 West. Step show on the hill and Greek Week were the best parties. RA meetings at Chinesegut Hill were the best “camping” activity and prepared me to lead my residents to safety when we had a fire drill during finals week. Janet Fowler, `88 Every year during the Engineering Expo, the military would set up and allow us to repel down the Kopp Engineering building. Each year, I would get better and better, overcoming my fear of heights. Richard Jordan, `98 I remember living in Alpha, now Kosove, on the fourth floor. Sometimes we would get eggs and throw them out the window to watch them fry on the sidewalk. I enjoyed riding in the Safe Team carts and the time our whole floor went midnight canoeing. That was Then; This is Now A Tiara and a Title: The 2013 Miss USF Pageant By Meghan Palmer, `13

When you think of a beauty pageant, what comes to mind? Maybe it’s a sparkly tiara or that coveted sash that proudly bears a title. Maybe it’s the clichéd “world peace” phrase you hear so often. When I went to support one of my sorority sisters at the Miss University of South Florida scholarship pageant last year, I did not expect to be so charmed by the event. The contestants were all so talented and beautiful, and more importantly, they were all proud Bulls who wanted to make our university better. That’s when I decided that in 2013, I was going to compete for the Miss USF title. As some of you may remember, there used to be a Miss USF pageant years ago. Miss America 1999, Nicole Johnson, was the first Miss USF in 1996. The event faded over the years, until 2008, when Student Government decided to revive it. Today’s pageant consists of two parts: a Mr. USF and Miss USF competition. Judging for both the male and the female pageants is based on the same criteria, but this year Miss USF became an official qualifier for the Miss Florida pageant. Jessica Lee, director of programming for USF Student Government, said the process involved several meetings and heavy paperwork to meet the criteria and come up with the contestant contract for the Miss USF participants. “Luckily, we had a lot of support from the Alumni Association. It is a rule that any local qualifier pageant winner in the Miss Florida system receives a $500 scholarship, and that scholarship money was donated by the Alumni Association. They really made this transition possible,” said Lee. Because of my limited pageant experience, I was extremely surprised when I realized just how much work goes into preparing for a pageant. We had a thick contract to fill out, a talent to prepare and a personal platform to develop. My talent was a sassy jazz dance and my personal platform focused on advocating for increased individualized speech lessons and communication skills among mentally challenged children so that they can express themselves and have more of a say in the direction of their lives. Those two things took a lot of work and that was just the start of it. I had to get into top physical shape, since one of the judging categories is lifestyle and fitness. I had to find a beautiful evening gown to wear. I had to learn how to walk and pose on stage. I had to read up on all things current and political for my interview with the judges, which counts for 25 percent of your overall score. And I had to do all of that while keeping up with my classes and job. For the last two months before the pageant, I transformed into the best pageant version of myself that I could manage. To be honest, I never expected this experience to teach me so much about myself, my passion for USF and the Miss America system. The women who compete in the system are incredibly intelligent and hard working. Whether they are college students or recent graduates in the working world, they all dedicate themselves to implementing their personal platforms and inspiring young girls all over the state and country. I am thrilled to say that after all of my hard work, I was crowned Miss University of South Florida 2013 on Feb. 28. It was one of the most exciting things I’ve ever experienced. I will proudly represent USF this summer at the Miss Florida pageant. Until then, I will be busy implementing my Miss USF platform to help disabled children find their voices and also doing whatever I can to instill Bull pride throughout the USF System. Go Bulls! Employ -A-Bull

Nancy Markiewicz, PHR, is the director of Human Resources for the University of South Florida Foundation/University Advancement.

Likely Reasons You Didn’t Get That Job Interview

I

f you’ve ever wondered why you weren’t invited to interview for a job for which you applied, I’m going to share with you some possibilities. First of all, I’m assuming that you read the job requirements and at least met the minimum qualifications. Because if you didn’t, that’s the reason why! I can’t recall how many times I’ve yelled at my computer asking why applicants waste everyone’s time applying for jobs when they don’t meet the minimum qualifications. That said, please know that I am grateful for all the applicants who invest the necessary time and effort it takes to review, prepare and apply for a job. So instead of criticizing, I’m going to critique the shortcomings of cover letters and resumes that irk me and are often the reason why applicants aren’t asked to interview. Hopefully, if you are guilty of one of these oversights, you can be honest with yourself and use this as a lesson for the future. Your Cover Letter Your cover letter is the first impression that you give to a recruiter, HR representative or hiring manager so I’m going to believe you want it to be your very best. Its purpose is to draw the interest of a prospective employer to read your resume. It’s critical that you produce a professional, neat and, most importantly, customized cover letter, written specifically for the posted job opening. It is obvious to me (and a turnoff) when an applicant doesn’t care enough to prepare a thoughtful, professional cover letter, or worse, doesn’t submit one at all.

38

ALUMNIVOICE | SPRING 2013

A generic cover letter will quickly land a resume in the not-interested file. I have received cover letters addressed to the University of Florida or Southern Florida when applying for a job at USF. Major gaffe! I’ve seen job seekers applying for an accounting job but the cover letter and resume indicate their background is in the communications field. Clearly, the message I’ll take away here is: This individual is not passionate about working at USF, is randomly applying for job openings, and doesn’t appear to be so great in the communications field either. It goes without saying that typos, grammatical errors or sloppy cover letters and resumes are deal breakers. If you don’t care enough to carefully review your paperwork for accuracy or neatness, then I will probably assume that the job you’re applying for really isn’t all that important to you. A recruiter once said, “a typo on your resume is like showing up to the interview with a hole in your shirt; you might have a perfectly reasonable explanation, but it doesn’t make you look good.” Take the time to perfect your cover letter and resume. Length of a cover letter is tricky but important. It shouldn’t be too long or too short. If you know who the hiring manager is, address the letter to him or her, but never address it to “Dear Sir” or “To Whom it May Concern.” If in doubt, either address it to “Hiring Manager,” “Human Resources” or just leave the salutation blank. Your Resume Everything I said about cover letters also applies to your resume. In addition, make sure your name, address and email address are included and easy to find – preferably at the top. Use a basic but modern standard font and no graphics. By all means, ask a friend or professional colleague to proofread your resume and cover letter for you. Your resume format – chronological or functional - isn’t all that important as long as it includes the essentials. If you want to include an objective at the top of your resume, that’s fine, as long as it is brief and narrowed to a specific field or career path. Some recruiters prefer when an applicant provides a brief summary profile of their career or positioning statement that describes more specifically who you are or what job you want. (Google “sample positioning statements for a resume.”) Bottom line: Put yourself in the employer’s seat when preparing your resume and cover letter – think about what they want and need, and then succinctly and honestly tell your story; explain how you can meet their needs and would fit into their organization. You might be highly qualified for any job in your field but what you need to convey in your resume and cover letter is why you are the right fit for this particular organization and what you can do for them. Keep these things in mind and you’ll find that you will get those invitations to interview. Good luck!
