Minutes with Monty Monty Weigel, `76 Chair, USF Alumni Association Board of Directors

My Fellow Alumni, With my term as chair of the board of directors of your USF Alumni Association drawing to a close in June, I look back with pride at all that our university has accomplished and look forward to the impressive potential that the future holds. I’m a banker by trade; numbers are important to me. USF’s numbers for the past year are significant: $413.6 million in research dollars, representing a 10-point jump that puts USF at 43rd in the United States in research expenditures at both public and private institutions. USF tied for first place in the state’s “pay-for-performance” rankings of public universities, and was ranked as the best university in Florida at preparing graduates for work or graduate school. In the past year, USF graduation rates increased 15 points to 63 percent, which in turn boosted our alumni ranks to more than 280,000 – creating a powerful force for sharing our Bull Pride and advocating on behalf of our alma mater. The future looks just as bright. Nearly 48,000 students now attend USF. The 2013 freshman class was the best qualified to date, boasting a grade point average of 3.97

and an average Scholastic Aptitude Test score of 1190 system wide. I foresee great things coming from these future alumni. These numbers help quantify our university’s success. However, they are only the first step in building USF’s legacy. The next step is for all of us – as devoted alumni who love USF – to connect with each other and publicly share our pride in our alma mater. You have made an initial commitment to USF by joining your Alumni Association. Now I encourage each of you to become actively involved. You can start by attending an alumni chapter function – with dozens of special interest societies and chapters in cities across the country – it’s easy to find fellow Bulls wherever you are. I speak from experience when I tell you that few things are more personally rewarding than joining with others to give back to the university that helped to shape our lives and careers. Another important way to get involved is to join the new USF Bulls Advocates initiative. This effort is designed to boost the university’s profile in the state Capitol during the legislative session and throughout the year. No special influence is required – all you need is a willingness to spring into action when called upon to protect our university. Working together, we can be heard. As I turn the gavel over to the 2014-15 alumni board chair Mike Griffin, I am confident that your Alumni Association is in good hands. Letter to the Editor

s one of the Charter Class graduates who attended the Class of `63’s 50th reunion activities in December, I want to thank you for your excellent coverage of this anniversary in the Winter issue of Alumni Voice magazine. Your cover shot and the photo and article inside captured the excitement of returning to the USF Tampa campus after five decades. A highlight of our visit was a tour of today’s modern campus, which bears little resemblance to that sandy expanse of land that housed the beginnings of a great university back in the early 1960s. My wife, Judith, and I were especially impressed with the professionalism of everyone associated with today’s USF, including the many students who welcomed us so warmly. Like so many others in the Charter Class, I was anxious in those early days to get my degree and go to work. In the beginning there were no dorms, fraternities or intercollegiate athletics – or even sidewalks – yet we took it all in stride because we knew it was a unique opportunity for many of us to get a college education. Even so, years passed before I fully appreciated the small classes taught by outstanding professors lured to USF by President John Allen’s dream. My career goal was journalism, but there were no journalism courses at the fledgling university – much less a school of communications. However, the administration cared enough to assign journalismminded students to one particular freshman English class that utilized “lab work” to regularly produce USF’s first campus newspaper: the campus edition of the Tampa Times. This early evidence of journalistic endeavors on our campus motivated the Tampa Tribune to transfer a newspaper internship from the University of Florida to USF – an internship that guaranteed a full-time reporter’s job after graduation. I was fortunate to be the first recipient, and this led to a rewarding 43-year career in newspaper work and corporate communications. I’m sure there are thousands of similar stories of USF graduates who credit their time at the university with successfully launching them into adulthood. But I can only speak for myself: USF gave me the experience, credentials and confidence to succeed in life, and I am enormously grateful for that. And now that I have seen today’s USF up close, I realize that my diploma gained value over the years as the university matured and grew into one of the finest and most diverse educational institutions in the country. USF Names New Director of Athletics

Mark Harlan was named as USF Director of Athletics in March, after a nationwide search to replace retiring Athletics Director Doug Woolard. Harlan will be responsible for an athletic department with 19 men’s and women’s teams competing in the American Athletic Conference, about 450 student-athletes and an annual budget of approximately $44 million. He was previously Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Relations at UCLA, where he helped guide a 25-sport athletic department with more than 700 student-athletes and a budget of approximately $80 million. Prior to his time at UCLA, Harlan served as senior vice president for Central Development at the University of Arizona Foundation. Before that, he served in associate athletic director roles at San Jose State and Northern Colorado. “When you look at Mark’s body of work over the past 12 years, the rich winning tradition and history of UCLA, along with the unique challenges he has faced, including playing football off-campus and competing for media attention and fan support in a market with multiple professional franchises, not to mention hiring two elite-level coaches, Mark’s qualifications appear to be a perfect match for what we need at USF in 2014 and beyond,” said Bill Sutton, chairman of Search Advisory Committee and director of USF’s Sport and Entertainment Management program.

Veterans Positioned for Success at USF

USF continues its proud tradition as one of the nation’s top Military Friendly institutions with two recent developments. In February, JP Morgan Chase selected the University of South Florida as one of just four institutions nationwide for a grant to expand educational opportunities for military veterans on campus and help student veterans graduate from college and find meaningful jobs. The $235,750 gift will go toward USF’s successful academic enhancement program to help student veterans stay on track for graduation, a mentoring program to connect student veterans with mentors in the community and an employment preparation and job placement program for vets. In March, Military Times announced that USF is No. 9 in its second annual “Best for Vets: Business Schools 2014” rankings – the only Florida school in the top 10. The rankings are based on academic quality, outcomes and policies, school culture, student support and cost. In 2012, Military Times also ranked the whole of USF fourth among the country’s most veteranfriendly colleges. The rankings were published in full in the March issue of Military Times EDGE magazine.

USF Health Names New Senior Vice President

Charles Lockwood, was named senior vice president for USF Health and dean of the Morsani College of Medicine. In addition to guiding USF Health – which encompasses the colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health and Pharmacy – Lockwood will oversee patient care provided through the USF Physicians Group when he begins his new role at USF in May. A member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, Lockwood comes to USF from his position as dean of The Ohio State University College of Medicine. At USF Health, he will lead more than 800 faculty members and nearly 500 physicians and healthcare practitioners who conduct more than

400,000 outpatient visits annually. The Morsani College of Medicine enrolls 620 medical students and 717 medical residents in 85 programs. The colleges of Nursing, Public Health and Pharmacy, along with the schools of Biomedical Sciences and Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences in the College of Medicine, have more than 5,000 students. USF Health researchers were awarded more than $246.6 million in grants and contracts last year. Prior to joining Ohio State, Lockwood spent nine years as the Anita O’Keeffe Young Professor of Women’s Health and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the Yale University School of Medicine. Prior to that, he served as the Stanley H. Kaplan Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the New York University School of Medicine from 1995 to 2002, and as acting director of NYU’s Kaplan Comprehensive Cancer Center from 1998 to 2000. His previous appointments include the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and the faculty of Tufts University. He is internationally known for his research expertise in obstetrics and gynecology garnering multiple awards, particularly his work in premature births.

hen tasked with making the decision for what was named the “Lie of the Year” for 2013, PolitiFact Managing Editor Angie Drobnic Holan chose something she felt had the largest impact on the nation: President Obama’s promise that Americans can keep their insurance plans under new health care laws. “It’s been interesting to see (the Affordable Care Act) evolve and what it’s meant,” Holan said. “The polls show that a lot of people don’t understand the health care laws. They don’t know what’s in it and they don’t know what it means for them, and it’s a very complicated law that affects the health care sector in different ways. It affects individual people in a lot of different ways. So with our fact checks we’re trying to explain it and trying to put it in perspective.” Holan became a reporter at the Tampa Bay Times in 2005. In 2007, she joined PolitiFact, a project created by the Tampa Bay Times to expose the truth in politics, and was one of the founding reporters who helped launched the Pulitzer Prize winning website. “It was born out of an idea,” Holan said. “We just wanted a new and distinctive way to cover elections and we also felt that politics wasn’t fact checked often enough.” She worked her way up through the project, working as editor of PolitiFact Florida and then deputy editor of the national site. She was promoted to managing editor of PolitiFact last October. Holan said her Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from USF has been invaluable to her during her work with PolitiFact. “Library and Information Science gives you a background to understand how information is organized, how to access the information, how to define your search parameters, so it’s enormously helpful for any task that you need specialized information,” Holan said. “I think that’s what librarians really are; they’re guides to help people find the information they need. I say librarians have this wonderful ethos of making sure that information is

available, which is very similar to the First Amendment freedoms that journalists really treasure.” Holan said she enjoys her work at PolitiFact because she gets the chance to inform the public on serious policies and issues they may not otherwise know about. “We get to write about some of the really important policy issues, and we write about them from a very serious perspective,” Holan said. “We have the Truth-O-Meter which is kind of fun and funny, but I think people understand the Truth-O-Meter doesn’t really exist. The Truth-O-Meter is the final element on a story that is usually a very long, detailed policy story about the important issues of the day. So even if the reader might disagree with one of our ratings, hopefully they read the whole story and they learn something about the policy and the background behind it.” The statement PolitiFact named as the “biggest lie of the year” in 2013 was made by President Obama 37 times since 2009, and was deemed false in 2013 when insurance companies began sending out policy cancellation letters because their plans no longer met the requirements implemented by new health care laws. “With the Internet we can fact check quickly,” Holan said. “One thing we’ve noticed with PolitiFact is that the closer that you can fact check something to when it was said, the more impact the fact check has, as far as either confirming correct knowledge or debunking inaccurate statements.” At PolitiFact, Holan said she is constantly working to provide the truth to the public and give them the information they need to govern themselves and for the nation to maintain its democracy. “As a journalist I get to learn new things every day and uncover new information for myself that I get to share with everyone else,” Holan said. “So I think it’s a valuable profession in any democratic society and as a journalist. I get to be a lifelong learner, which is very satisfying.” ®

Hiram Rios, USF Ambassador Rios is a junior dual majoring in International Studies and Economics, with a minor in Chinese Language. He’s a USF Ambassador, a student assistant in the Office of National Scholarships and a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. Another interesting fact: Rios played violin during the Opening Ceremonies in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Q. What accomplishment are you most proud of? A. Just recently I was named as a Critical Language Scholar. Last year, I got a Boren and a Gilman Scholarship and I was able to study in China for three months.This year I get to do the same thing, but it’s different because I get to go do the Department of State Program, and I get to do that with the other top learners in the country, so it’s going to be a great experience. Q. What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned at USF? A. You get what you work for. Hard work definitely

does pay off. I was the first student to receive the Employee of the Year award at USF, and I think that really showed that every ounce of work I put in to my career, for the USF Ambassadors, for my school work and for my organizations has all paid off, and people really do recognize and value that here. Q. What do you still hope to accomplish some day? A. I’ve yet to master all of the languages that are the official languages of the United Nations. After Mandarin, Spanish and English, I’m going to move on to learn Arabic, Russian and French, which are the other three official languages. Q. Why do you love USF? A. I love USF because after living in Puerto Rico and moving to the U.S., I didn’t know very many people here. So having that sense of community and sense of family, it really instilled this great pride in the university for me. All of my involvement here at USF is so that I can create a home for future Bulls, for alumni and for anyone affiliated with the university that we can be proud of for years to come.

Giving Back: George & Jane Morgan

Morgan Family Makes $8 Million Gift to University of South Florida By Jay Wilson, USF Foundation

Deferred gift to benefit USF Athletics, Colleges of Business and Marine Science

eorge `76 and Jane Morgan have had a lifelong love affair with the University of South Florida. Now, thanks to a deferred gift, they’ve ensured that their passion for George’s alma mater will be felt long after they are gone. A USF Foundation Board member, George and his wife Jane have made an $8 million estate gift to the University of South Florida. This gift comes at the start of the second phase of the $1 billion USF: Unstoppable Campaign. The gift will benefit three distinct areas of the university – the College of Business, the College of Marine Science and USF Athletics. The gift provides $3 million to establish the George and Jane Morgan Endowment for Excellence for the College of Business, $3 million to establish the George and Jane Morgan Endowment for Excellence for Marine Science, $1 million to create the George and Jane Morgan Endowment for Excellence for Men’s Golf and $1 million to create the George and Jane Morgan Endowed Football Scholarship. Morgan said that as a USF alumnus, he is especially proud to give back to his alma mater. “I am delighted that Jane and I can make these gifts to the University of South Florida,” said Morgan. “As a longtime member of the USF community, I have seen firsthand the ways in which giving improves the lives of our students and faculty. Through these endowed gifts, Jane and I know that we will also make a difference for generations to come. I hope, through our example, to inspire others to think of giving to the USF System when they are making their estate plans.” USF President Judy Genshaft noted that the Morgan’s gift will impact many areas of the university. “One powerful aspect of this gift is the way in which it will make a difference for students and

faculty in so many different fields of study. Our Colleges of Business and Marine Science will benefit tremendously from the Morgans’ generosity, as will our student athletes,” said President Genshaft. The gifts will create endowments for the colleges and athletics. Because the gifts are endowments, they will provide financial resources into perpetuity. “An endowment gift like this one is of vital importance for the College of Marine Science,” said Dean Jacqueline Dixon. “It will provide our faculty and students with a steady source of funding that may be used to enhance the academic enterprise at the college, providing a boon for both education and research.” For the College of Business, Dean Moez Limayem said the gift will spur new learning opportunities. “This amazing gift from the Morgan family will provide us with a consistent funding source needed to create new programs that will focus on student success.” The gift will likewise provide long-term funding for USF athletics programs. Football will benefit from an endowed scholarship, while men’s golf will have a steady funding resource for equipment, travel and other annual needs. The Morgans’ estate gift provides a capstone for a lifetime of giving to USF. USF Foundation CEO Joel Momberg noted the couple’s lasting legacy. “The USF Foundation is grateful to the Morgans for their longtime support of USF,” said Momberg. “They have given both time and financial resources, and in so doing have made a real difference in the lives of our students and faculty. Now, thanks to this generous estate gift, their impact will be felt far into the future. We simply can’t thank them enough.” ®

ver since he was 9 years old, swimming laps with his siblings in a community pool in New Orleans, Arnie Bellini dreamed of swimming across the English Channel. The 21-mile swim from England to France is legendary for its difficulty due to the channel’s frigid, choppy waters and heavy freighter traffic. About 1,400 swimmers have done it since the first successful crossing in 1875. Eight swimmers have died in the attempt. When Bellini made his crossing in September 2013, he became the 50th person over 50 to do it. He was 54 at the time. “I believe in living life to the fullest,” Bellini said. It’s a philosophy he applies to business, as well.

Back in 1982, Bellini and his brother David left their comfortable corporate jobs and founded the IT solutions provider Connectwise, which they’ve built into one of the Bay area’s fastestgrowing high tech firms. He credits his MBA from USF for giving him the confidence to take the calculated risks that are needed to be successful. “It gives you such a well-rounded view of all of the different facets of business that you’re able to go in fearless in so many endeavors.” Fearless also describes Bellini’s attitude toward physical competition. He had completed three Iron Man triathlons after turning 50 and was looking for a different type of challenge when he decided to try to make his childhood ambition of swimming the English Channel a reality.

In addition to the 2.4-mile Iron Man swims, Bellini also participated in the Tampa Marathon Swim, a 24-mile swim from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge to the Courtney Campbell Causeway. However, the English Channel is a different kind of challenge. For one thing, the water is dangerously cold, with temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. Swimmers are not allowed to wear a wetsuit. Due to the wind and swift currents, channel swimmers must take a serpentine route that can make the swim 30 to 40 miles long. Bellini knew it could take anywhere from 12 to 18 hours for him to make it across. The wake from passing cargo freighters churns the water unpredictably, causing swimmers to bob “like a clothespin in a washing machine,” Bellini said. His only nourishment during the swim would come from a rice-based protein drink tossed from the official escort boat every half hour. Rest breaks are out of the question because of the potential for hypothermia. To prepare, Bellini trained in the open waters of the Hillsborough River and Tampa Bay during the winter months. On his first attempt in 2012, Bellini swam to within four miles of the French coast, but was unable to complete the crossing because the tides took him too far off course. “It was heartbreaking,” he recalled. “Probably some of the best life lessons I’ve got to work with were from that failure. I went in fully trained physically, but mentally I wasn’t there. I didn’t really know all the best practices, tips and tricks.” The following year, when he stepped back on the beach in Dover, he told himself: “This is my day. I’m going to make it today.” About halfway across he hit a low point when the sun went down and the water grew even colder. So he revved up his arm rotation and kicked his legs – something distance swimmers don’t usually do – and kept on swimming. Unlike his first attempt, he never

checked where he was and he asked the crew of the official escort boat not to tell him. It wasn’t until the escort boat cut loose a tender – a smaller craft that guides the swimmer into shore – that he knew he was within 300 yards of shore. “It was pitch dark, no moon, no lights,” Bellini recalled. A lighthouse on France’s Cap GrisNez threw a beam that gave him just enough light to see the rocky shore that he needed to touch to make the crossing official. “If you’re on a rocky shoreline, you have to touch the rocks and the guy in the tender has to verify that you’ve touched,” Bellini explained. “It was almost like an altar was set up there. There was a ledge that I kneeled on. I paused before I touched and I just watched my hands as they touched. It was so cool.” With that feat now behind him, Bellini has set his sights on a new challenge: the “Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming.” The English Channel swim is one jewel in the crown. The other two are the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, a 28.5-mile swim around the island of Manhattan, and the Catalina Channel Swim, a 20.2-mile swim from the island of Catalina to the southern California coast. He’s scheduled to do the Manhattan swim in June and the Catalina swim in September. “There are only 87 people in the world who have done the Triple Crown,” Bellini said. “So I’m trying to be one of those in the double digits. And if I’m successful, I will have done all three in one year’s time and all over the age of 50.” Godspeed, Arnie.

Make Your Pride Official with the New USF Class Ring

anley Jaquiss was living in Lambda Hall in 1984 when, on one of his frequent visits to the University Center – or U.C. as it was called then – he spotted a selection of class rings for sale. He selected a gold ring with the USF Seal on one side and the scales of justice, representing his Criminology major, on the other. It is one of only two rings that he wears to this day: his wedding band and his USF class ring. “My class ring symbolizes not only a sense of accomplishment, but is a proud reminder that I earned this degree at USF,” said Jaquiss, who is a USF Alumni Association Life Member and serves as a director on the Alumni Association’s board. Jaquiss, `86, plans to replace that class ring with USF’s new, official class ring when he completes his Master’s degree in 2015. His daughter Megan, a member of USF’s Class of 2016, will share in the tradition when she hits the 75-hour mark that is now required for students to purchase a class ring. That special legacy is something that USF Alumni Association Executive Director Bill McCausland wants every Bull to share, which is why he pushed for an official version of USF’s class ring, available only from Herff Jones. “A traditional class ring – I don’t care if it’s from the Sixties or today – it stands the test of time. It’s a classic, like a black tuxedo,” McCausland said. He hears often from USF alumni who lost their ring or couldn’t afford one when they were in college. Now, alumni can purchase the official class ring and join a tradition that unites USF graduates across the decades. The official USF class ring is available in either white or yellow gold, with a green stone and the iconic USF Bull “U” on one side. The men’s model is called the Collegiate and the women’s is called the Century. The rings are presented at two special ceremonies held in the spring and fall that are hosted by your USF Alumni Association. “A USF class ring is a great way to wear your pride every day,” McCausland said. “It is appropriate in a business environment or any setting.” A few years ago Jaquiss was attending a business meeting in Fort Myers with a new consultant when he noticed the man was wearing a USF class ring. “Guess who that person was?” he asked. “USF alumni board chair-elect Mike Griffin. We have been friends ever since. Twenty-five years after graduation, and a move to another city, many of my best friends are USF graduates. My second daughter, Anna, decided to attend USF with very little prodding by me, per my wife’s recommendation. A Student Considers USF’s History &Traditions By Jordan See, Class of 2015

t the University of South Florida, it’s easy to take our beautiful campus for granted. Fountains and palm trees line our sidewalks between state-of-the-art buildings. There are hammocks strung up near our manmade beach and students walk to class beneath trellised colonnades. With all that USF has to offer, it’s easy to forget just how young it is. With that in mind, your USF Alumni Association is sponsoring the creation of a book that highlights the USF of today and retells the stories of our humble beginnings. Formerly known as the Itty Bitty Book of Bull, then the Book of Bull, this new book will focus on student life, athletics, annual traditions and alumni partnership, with specific emphasis on the history of USF. Starting with the next incoming class, all freshmen and transfer students will receive this new book when they begin their studies at USF. Less than 60 years ago, our campus was nothing but dirt roads and empty lots. At the time, both Tampa and St. Petersburg wanted to be the location of Florida’s newest university. However, a strong storm the evening before surveyors arrived in St. Pete caused severe flooding, which ultimately caused the city to lose the fight. The selected location was the Tampa Henderson Air Field, an auxiliary base used as a practice bombing range during WWII. With the geography settled, the vision of a few state leaders led by the “Father of USF” Sam Gibbons, came into focus and the University of South Florida was founded in 1956. In the early years, campus life looked very different than it does today. Predominantly a commuter school, the student body included typical freshmen along with older students, such as mothers

looking to finish their degrees and veterans who attended classes on the G.I. Bill. Most students today probably would have hated campus life 50 years ago. The lack of computers made the lines to select classes look like the queues at Disney World. The absence of intercollegiate sports was supported by John Allen, USF’s first president, who coined USF’s first motto: “Accent on Learning.” Dorm life was especially different. In the mid-60s, punch cards enforced a strict curfew of 11 p.m. on weekdays for the single-sex dorms and staying the night off campus required written permission from a parent. Rocky the Bull, USF’s beloved mascot who won the 2013 Capital One Mascot Challenge, almost didn’t make the cut as USF’ mascot. In 1962, students voted on a university mascot. The winner was determined to be not a bull, but a buccaneer. However, conflict with an identical mascot at a junior college made the runner-up, the Golden Brahma, the winner. Interestingly enough, someone pointed out that a Brahma is in fact a breed of Asian chicken, not a reference to Florida’s flourishing cattle industry. An “n” was quickly added to the name, which stuck until the mid-80s, when students unofficially adopted the Bull in place of the Golden Brahmans. The history of USF is a testament to the passion and drive required to turn an idea into reality. USF has thrived because every new class of students, every professor and adviser, and every alumnus has maintained and contributed to its legacy. With the creation of this new traditions book, we hope that every incoming USF student who receives it will share our pride in USF’s history and help its traditions live on.

The annual conference brings together student leaders from universities throughout the southeast to network and share best practices.

There are also weekly meetings where candidates listen to guest speakers and an annual invitation-only professional mixer where employers with job opportunities are present. Career Fairs In addition to the annual professional mixer, CareerSource Tampa Bay and CareerSource Pinellas hold three other career fairs that are open to the public. Past career fairs have boasted 20-50 employers and between 100-200 job openings. If you’re a veteran, at least one of our career fairs is open to you before the general public and veterans are given priority entrance to all three career fairs. as chief financial officer and vice president for Saint Joseph’s College. She has previously served in financial leadership roles at Rollins College and Florida State University.

Ernest Clark, Finance `79, was appointed by the

East Aurora School Board to be the director of business.

Stephen R.T. Evans, M.D. `79, was elected vice

chair of the American Board of Surgery (ABS) for 2014-15. Dr. Evans will serve as chair in 2015-16. Dr. Evans, executive vice president for Medical Affairs and chief medical officer for MedStar Health, oversees medical education, research, clinical quality, and risk management initiatives, as well as the academic partnership with Georgetown University School of Medicine and MedStar Health’s other academic affiliations. He is a professor of surgery at Georgetown University.

Robert J. Goetz, MBA `79, has been hired as the

director of the Small Business Development Center/ Veterans Business Outreach Center at Gulf Coast State College. Goetz also writes the column “Entrepreneurship and the Creative Economy” for Community College Entrepreneur Quarterly.

Dorene Thomas, Criminology `74, is

the chief of police for the City of Pinellas Park. She was named to the board of directors for the LiveFree! Coalition Key Leader Council. Thomas will serve as board chair.

Douglas Ash, Engineering Technology `85, was

named Chief Information Officer for Triad Isotopes, Inc., a nuclear pharmacy company located in Orlando. Ash has more than 30 years experience working for Fortune 500 companies in various roles. Ash currently serves as the chairman for the Information Technology Senior Manager Forum (ITSMF) which aims to prepare African-American IT practitioners for executive leadership positions.

Jack Clark, MBA `82, has been appointed to oversee growth of The Colony Group’s Florida offices. The Colony Group is one of the fastest growing registered investment advisers in the country. Clark holds a Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Juan Cocuy, Accounting `80, has been appointed

to the board of governors of Citizens Property Insurance Corp., Florida’s state-managed property insurer. He is also a board member of the United Way of Palm Beach County, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, and the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office Foundation.

ning Hollywood sound engineer. King has won three Academy Awards for his work in the films “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” “The Dark Knight” and “Inception.” King’s work can also be heard in “Turbo,” an animated film about a garden snail with an Indy 500 dream. “Turbo” marks King’s 85th sound engineering credit.

Dana Merritt, M.S. Speech-Language Pathology

`80, has had her first book published. It is titled A Time for Phonics. Merritt’s private practice, Merritt Speech & Learning, has been in Jacksonville for 16 years. She has received several national awards for her work.

Ken Podlin, Management `85, was appointed as

national sales director of Bonded Builders Warranty Group. He oversees daily sales operations for the new-home builder warranty company. He was previously regional vice president for American Land Lease.

Amy Tardif, Mass Communications

`87, was elected as chair-elect of the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), the largest professional organization for electronic journalism. Tardif is the first woman in public radio to be elected for the three-year leadership position. Tardif will serve as chair-elect this year, as chair next year, and as chair of the RTDNA’s foundation the following year. Tardif currently serves as the station manager and news director for WGCU-FM in Fort Myers.

David Terrell, MBA `84, has joined Ball State

University as the director of Economic Development Policy. He was previously the senior advisor to Indiana’s lieutenant governor.

Joseph B. Volpe III, Management `85, has joined

co-founder of Marder Greenspoon which has opened its newest firm in Tampa. Marder’s practice moved into a new 11,000-square-foot space in the SunTrust Financial Centre in downtown Tampa in March. has been promoted to president of Airgas South Region. He was previously vice president of business development for Airgas Merchant Gases. Airgas is one of the nation’s leading suppliers of industrial, medical, and specialty gases and hard goods.

Barbara Wiedemann, M.A. English `80 and Ph.D

`86, wrote a poetry collection, The Death of a Pope and other Poems, which was published by Finishing Line Press in 2012. She has been a professor at Auburn University Montgomery for the past 20 years, and also authored the poetry collections, Half-Life of Love and Sometime in October.

Blake Guillory, MBA `91, is the new executive

director of the South Florida Water Management District. He is the current director of the Southwest Florida district and was formerly an executive at major engineering firms that specialize in water projects.

Joseph Low III, MBA `93, recently spoke at

Southeast Missouri State University about a book he co-wrote with his wife, Claudia, titled They Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Speak Spanish in Brazil. The book explores intercultural communication for foreigners who live and conduct business in Brazil. Low also has a consulting firm.

was promoted to project manager at Engineering Professionals Inc. Hamilton’s responsibilities will include overseeing projects from initial negotiations to final inspections.

Maggie Hayes, M.S. Nursing `09, is a professor of Nursing at Valencia College in Orlando. She began her career as a registered nurse in 1981 after graduating from Adelphi University on Long Island, NY. She worked in PCU/ICU, open heart recovery and as an agency nurse for relief critical care staffing in local area hospitals. She taught nursing assistants when she moved to Orlando in 1984 and worked in in-service education. While earning her MSN from USF, she received the Advanced Nursing Practice Excellence in Nursing Education Award. She began working with Valencia College in the Nursing Arts Lab in January 2004 as adjunct faculty and became a full-time professor of Nursing in January 2010. She has been married 25 years and has three children.

Link is a trustee for the National Youth Leadership Foundation and serves as a program coordinator for the two leadership conferences based in Florida.

Hernandez participated in the conference as part of a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. As a Satcher Fellow, she is a member of the teaching faculty at Morehouse and works with the Center for Disease Control’s Sexually Transmitted Disease Division, focusing on health equity issues.

`10 & M.S. Biomedical Engineering `11, is a part of a team of engineers for NASA’s Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) spacecraft. The craft was designed to explore the moon’s chemical makeup in hopes of revealing history about the moon. Sinatra’s team was charged with building a radiant-resistant instrument to be used in the mission.

Michelle Smith, Mechanical Engineering `12, accepted a position in the Emerging Leaders Development Program with Illinois Tool Works (ITW). Smith will complete two 18-month rotations in the highly selective, three-year program. Smith’s first rotation is at ITW Hi-Cone in the greater Chicago area, focusing on process improvement.

was selected to continue his postdoctoral work in a laboratory at Stanford University’s College of Medicine. Trotter is working with Thomas Sudhof, M.D., winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology for Medicine. They are studying how nerve cells communicate and create information exchanges with one another in regards to autism. Trotter also has co-authored 15 journal articles and has a patent pending related to treating brain injuries.

Bulls Football Springs Forward for Fans

ans flocked to Corbett Stadium on USF’s Tampa campus on Saturday, March 29, to attend USF Football’s annual Spring Game and the Bulls gave them a can’t-miss show. Quarterback Steven Bench threw for 317 yards and three scores to help the White Team hand the Green Team a 35-3 loss in front of a crowd of approximately 2,000 that surrounded the Bulls in the stands and on the grass berms at the home of the USF men’s and women’s soccer teams. “I liked those touchdowns, the White Team was really crisp,” head coach Willie Taggart said. “Steven did a good job getting the ball to the receivers and getting it to them on time. It was good to see some yards after the catch, where we’re not just catching the ball and getting tackled.” Bench threw all of his touchdown passes in the first half before the White Team went to the locker room with a 28-3 lead at the halftime break. Bench turned things over late in the game to redshirt freshman quarterback Evan Wilson, who produced the final score by connecting with Zach Benjamin for a 5-yard touchdown with five minutes remaining. “I tell you what, when we bring both teams together in the fall, oh yeah, it’s going to be nice,” said junior offensive lineman Thor Jozwiak, who helped pave the way for a White Team that will be rewarded with a steak dinner later this spring. work and both guys are doing a really good job this entire spring,” Taggart said. “I said it earlier this spring I feel we have two quarterbacks that can really get it done for us. It’s amazing what competition will do for you, but it’s also amazing what experience will do.” Fans didn’t let heavy rainfall stop a good tailgate and USF supporters had no problem busting out their umbrellas to watch the main event. The weather got better as the game went on and sun and clear skies showed up by the time the team signed autographs for the fans on the field after the final whistle. The Bulls as a whole showed a ton of progress on the field and in the weight room this spring and things could get even better in the fall thanks to Taggart’s staff putting together the top-rated recruiting class in the American Athletic Conference. The Bulls return 17 starters (10 offense, five defense, two specialists) for Taggart’s second season at the helm, which kicks off on Aug. 30 vs. Western Carolina at Raymond James Stadium. The Bulls 2014 non-conference schedule features home clashes vs. Big Ten foe Maryland (Sept. 6) and ACC opponent N.C. State (Sept. 13) as well as a road game at perennial Big Ten power Wisconsin (Sept. 27). USF will welcome UConn (Fri., Sept. 19), East Carolina (Sat., Oct. 11/Homecoming), Houston (Sat., Nov. 1) and UCF (Fri., Nov. 28) to Raymond James in American Athletic Conference action.
