Principal’s Report What a great start to term 3. Students are learning, having fun and trying their best on all occasions, while showing an altruis c a/tude towards their schooling life. Last week was ‘Educa on Week’ and here, at Homebush Public School, we showcased some fantas c events. The ‘Science Fair’ was enjoyed by all the students with a young fellow in Kindergarten sta ng “This is the best day ever! This is a credit to all the students in years 5 and 6 who have worked really hard to put together their experiments and presenta ons. Well Done!

A lot of students and parents ordered the special lunch from the canteen. We are lucky to have such healthy and tasty food available for the students. Don’t forget a lunch special goes home every week. UNSW English Test was conducted this week and a great eort was made by many teachers to facilitate the si/ng of the exam. It is important we recognise these eorts and I thank the teachers who were here at 7 am to be ready for the students at 7.30. Details for the third and ďŹ nal test will be coming home shortly.

Many parents came up to school and enjoyed the day with their children. One parent commented to me “I think I have learnt a lot today as well. It was great to have so many parents and friends in the school enjoying the opportunity to learn and have fun with their children.

Student Welfare is paramount in all teacher’s minds. Some mes we hear the term Student Welfare and we think that something has gone wrong. This week Mrs Nurdin introduced a posi ve behaviour system. This will reward the vast majority of our students who do the right thing all the me. More informa on on the new part of our welfare system is printed on another page in this newsle"er. All students were told about the rules and rewards at assemblies this week. Please discuss them with your child. Athle cs Carnival will be held tomorrow at the Olympic Park Warm Up track. Parents are welcome to join us for the day. It is important that all children a"end and par cipate in this event. During this year it is a great me to for children to experience what they are seeing on TV during the Olympics and recognise the eort that is required to be successful. Thank you Mr Brian Lambert

Children who won’t take no for an answer

P A R E N T I N G P A G E ge are a p s i n th f nted o rose, one o e s e r p s G Article y Michael enting Edu r b a n g P writte leadin s ’ a i l Austra . cators

You know the type of child who keeps asking for a favour or a treat un l they get the response they want? These kids generally use one of two strategies. They may either nag or hound you un l they get an affirma ve or they will seek out an adult who will give them the answer they want. The first method, which is based on persistence, is generally very effec ve to use with red parents and sole parents who are more suscep ble to this type of behaviour. “All right have the treat. Anything for some peace and quiet” is a response that most people who have spent me around children are familiar with.

behave. This type of parental manipula on can occur for many reasons. Either it is due to different standards of behaviour or thoughts about bringing up children or a lack of understanding about what has happened in a child’s day. Regardless of the reason it means that parents need to communicate and also get the message across to children that it is taboo to keep seeking out a parent un l they get the response they want. Parents should be firm with a child who goes to another parent in search of a yes aMer they have received a knock back from another. The other technique that you can use is to defer to the other parent whenever children catch you unawares with a request.

The second method is a li"le more devious but very effec ve and usually occurs in dual parent families. You know the situa on. A child’s request for a treat, favour or ou ng is turned down for good reason “No Jessica you can’t have an ice cream now. Wait un l aMer dinner” but the child goes to the other parent who may well give them the affirma ve they are seeking.

“Okay, I’ll just check with dad and I’ll get back to you” is the type of response parents may need to use. This strategy can be a li"le wearing and even ar ficial but it demonstrates that you are a double act.

Minor happening but very irrita ng. These situa ons are indica ve of two people who are opera ng on different paren ng planes. If it happens every now and again then it is no big deal. However, if one parent is always gran ng a child his or her wishes without consulta on or thought of how the other parent thinks then it is probably me to step back and reflect on how you can both work together. If it happens frequently your children will learn how to play one parent off against the other or manipulate situa ons un l they get what they want.

Some mes we ask children to help or give them advice but we get li"le response. The natural reac on is to repeat ourselves as if saying it one more me reinforces our message.

It sounds sinister but it is not. It is just how we human beings tend to think and behave.

Vitamins for Parents Don’t tell them more than once!

If you repeat yourself just to underline your message there is a good chance that parent deafness will become permanent or they will do the opposite of what you want, just to annoy you. Rather than repea ng yourself get in the habit of ac ng. For example, rather than remind children a number of mes to come to the dinner table just serve the meal aMer informing them the meal is on the table.

2012 BOOK WEEK/ LITERACY WEEK The annual book week parade will be held in the school assembly hall at 2.00pm on Wednesday 22 August. The parade will involve children in Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two. The children need to wear a costume to school dressed up as their favourite book character. They do not need to wear their school uniform on this day as it is recommended that they wear the book costume all day as part of this occasion. Another feature of Book Week at our school this year is an invita on to parents to have literacy me with their children in class before lunch on Wednesday 22 August. Parents are invited to join their child for literacy ac vi es in the classrooms at 12.15pm. This will be followed by a picnic lunch with your child at 12.45pm. The book character parade will then commence at 2.00pm in the school hall. The book fair, which is being held in the library from Monday 20 August un l Thursday 23 August, will open from 8.30 am to 9.00 am. Please come along to buy a book to donate to the library. We are looking for volunteers to help sell the books at the book fair. If you can help on any day during Book Week please fill in the form below and return to the Front Office as soon as possible.
