CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAM
COLLEGE COUNSELING
NORTHWOOD SCHOOL OVERVIEW
Northwood School has 175 students, over 85% of which are boarders, from across the United States and around the world. We offer a traditional college prep curriculum with AP offerings in all academic disciplines, in addition to a robust co-curricular program. A Northwood School education provides students with first hand experiences that allow them to find and explore their passions, to hone their skills and build a knowledge base that will prepare them to face the challenges of the modern world. These experiences also help set Northwood students apart in the college admission process.
ACADEMIC PROGRAM
Northwood School offers a challenging core curriculum that emphasizes preparation for college coursework, but does so in a supportive and structured setting. The academic program at Northwood is designed to foster each student’s intellectual and personal growth with emphasis placed on reading, writing, public-speaking, and analytical skills. Average class size is twelve, allowing teachers to utilize varied teaching techniques to accommodate different learning styles. Faculty are also involved in other aspects of campus life as advisors, coaches, and dorm parents. At Northwood, we hold ethical and moral decision-making to be central to our educational mission. Our goal is to provide students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to navigate the challenges of the twenty-first century.
CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAM
COLLEGE COUNSELING
College is a match to be made, not a prize to be won. The college planning and application process requires a unique combination of self-reflection, organization, and risk-taking. Northwood School’s college counseling office works closely with students to guide, support, and encourage them along the way. This begins during the junior year with a series of seminars covering topics designed to help build an initial college list, understand and prepare for standardized testing, plan college visits, and begin work on applications. Northwood students take SAT and ACT preparation courses in math and English at no additional cost and work one-on-one with their college counselor to ensure the readiness of all admission materials. Parents also play an important role in the college search process, discussing options and strategies with college counselors throughout the application process and aiding in finding the most appropriate match for each student.

NORTHWOOD SCHOOL LEARNING CENTER
Northwood School’s Learning Center is designed for students who are capable of meeting the standards of our curriculum but require or seek an additional layer of academic support. The Learning Center is staffed by a team of Academic Coaches trained to assist students with academic anxiety, ADD/ADHD, executive function deficiencies and minor to moderate diagnosed learning disabilities. Learning Center services are fully integrated into our daily schedule in order to allow students to take full advantage of all academic and co-curricular offerings. Our academic coaches use students’ strengths as the foundation to build individualized plans that increase self-awareness and knowledge of learning styles, establish strong academic habits and behaviors and allow students to become more independent learners.
The Learning Center has tiered offerings that meet the varied needs of Northwood School students. Support for students ranges from four individualized meetings a week during the class day with an Academic Coach to small group meetings four or two times a week with an Academic Coach. Additionally, all students enrolled in the Learning Center are provided with regularly scheduled meetings with Academic Coaches during our evening study hall.
INNOVATION & DESIGN • ENTREPRENEURIAL STUDIES
Northwood School’s offerings and facilities focused on Innovation, Design and Entrepreneurial studies provide first hand experiences rarely offered to students at the high school level. Northwood School’s “Innovation and Design Thinking” course follows the MIT School of Architecture and Planning model for collaborative problem solving in the form of a project-based curriculum that emphasizes an engagement in community, grows creative thinking, and supports the building of projects through a wide range of tools and materials. Innovation and Design students learn and practice effective communication skills by sharing and proposing solutions, working with teams of collaborators and visiting experts, marketing their work through an online portfolio system, and presenting polished projects to the community. This course is for anyone who sees him or herself as a maker, or anyone who would like to become one. Northwood School’s “Entrepreneurship” class emphasizes 21st century methodologies in order to help students learn the skills necessary to solve the real-world issues facing our local community and a rapidly changing global economy. Northwood School is partnered with local entrepreneurs and businesses to allow students the experience of facing actual business and management issues, in addition to requiring students to create and build their own business model.
NORTHWOOD on MAIN
In the fall of 2017, these classes and other offerings will be housed in the “Northwood on Main” facility. This 12,000 square foot Center for Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship and the Arts is housed in a historic building on Main Street in downtown Lake Placid. This facility will be equipped with state of the art digital and traditional fabrication studios that includes 3D printers, laser cutters and a host of additional tools. It will allow for the expansion of our robotics program, provide classrooms and meeting areas for entrepreneurship courses, audio and video recording studios, and performance space. Additionally, “Northwood on Main” will have two fully-equipped apartments allowing us to provide residencies to experts in different fields who will work with our students, faculty and the community.
