Greetings from Pastor Branch
Entering our 60th year of ministry as a church family is a testimony to God's creative presence and will to shape his people for the work of kingdom building. It is the kind of unstoppable work that not only unfolds within the faith community but extends to the uttermost part of the earth.
As you hear the songs, the preached word and stories of our wonderful journey celebrating 60 years of ministry, we invite you to focus on the hugely important kingdom assignment of being God's disciples everyday, connecting to everyone, everywhere.
We are thankful for our founding members who, through vision and sacrifice, provided us with a legacy that will never be forgotten. Today, each of you should rejoice that God has included us in his redemptive plan for all people. It is God's desire that we partner with Him to continue to make great things happen! Third New Hope is bursting with rhythm, determination, creativity, relevance and an unstoppable mission that will guide us into a future that calls for people who will live and serve in a manner that matters to God! We believe that God is up to something and what's our to do is to find our something within the something GOD is up to and partner with God to make great things happen in our world.
Love and Peace!
E.L . Branch, Senior Pastor

Third New Hope Baptist Church A 60-Year Historic Journey
“Upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18) Third New Hope Baptist Church was born from the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ Himself in March, 1956. Christ served, and continues to serve, as the Chief cornerstone and foundation of this church. Yet, Third New Hope’s roots are connected to an inauspicious event that truly tested its faith. The story of Third New Hope Baptist Church’s beginning is interwoven with Cosmopolitan Baptist Church, which was located in the Dequindre/ Davidson area on Detroit’s east side. Those who remember will recall a cold Sunday morning in March, 1956, when approximately 48 men, women, and children gathered at Cosmopolitan for their day of worship. However, this Sunday would prove to be far from a typical day of praise and worship. As the congregation prepared for morning service, the owner of the church building boldly informed the deacons that there would be no church service on this day; everybody had to leave – now – and don’t come back! Shocked and confused, the congregation slowly stood to its feet and quietly filed out, while asking God for directions. “I felt bad, because I wondered where we would go to worship,” recalled Doris Keys Anthony, who was almost 13 years old at the time, and was with her parents, Deacon Joseph and Sister Alfoncya Keys. “We all left with so many questions on our minds.” Gathered just outside the church, a small group pondered its next move. Deacon John Cunningham offered his home as a place to worship. Thus, a scattered flock of about 18 people went directly to the deacon’s home, located at 20110 Cherrylawn on the city’s west side. Once they arrived, they talked about the recent event, but mostly sang, prayed, and worshipped the “Living God” in Deacon Cunningham’s “living room.” For the next few Sundays, the former members of Cosmopolitan continued to convene for worship at Deacon Cunningham’s home. It was obvious that this faithful group of Christians wanted to continue in the spirit of fellowship with each other, while honoring God through prayer, praise and worship. Seeing and understanding the spiritual aura of a “new hope” in this body of worshippers, and a “new hope” that God had not left them or forsaken them, Deacon Cunningham encouraged the small group of Christians to go forward as New Hope Baptist Church. The worshippers agreed. Deacon Cunningham subsequently drove to Lansing, Mich. to register the name New Hope Baptist Church, but learned there were already Baptist churches registered under the auspices of New Hope, First New Hope and Second New Hope. Not to be discouraged, especially after coming this far by faith, Cunningham, with the consensus of the small group of worshippers, officially registered the name Third New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. The founding members were recorded as: Deacon and Sister Cunningham, Deacon John and Sister Marion Wilson, Deacon Joseph and Sister Alfonyca Keys, Deacon Arvis and Sister Leola Smith, Brother George and Sister Agnes Haynes, Deacon Lenon Smith, Sister Margaret Vinson, Sister Elnora Washington, Sister Elizabeth Powell, Sister Lizzy Hart, Sister Doris Keys, Sister Gloria Powell Smith, Sister Brinda Powell, and Sister Lynette Powell. Living founders are: Lenon Smith, Sister Alfonyca Keys, Doris Keys (Anthony), Lynette Powell, and Sister Elnora Washington.

“And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.” (Jeremiah 3:15) Shortly after the formation of Third New Hope Baptist Church, the founding members elected Rev. John L. Davis as their first pastor. Moving from Deacon Cunningham’s home, the congregation rented a small storefront structure at 1967 Carpenter St. in Detroit, just blocks from the small enclave of Hamtramck, Mich. This storefront church would remain Third New Hope’s home from 1956 to 1959. In October, 1959, the growing Third New Hope congregation purchased its first building, located at 9801 Russell St., about one mile from the Carpenter edifice. The new church was larger and could accommodate the growing congregation. When the deal was completed and the members were ready to relocate, they formed a festive precession – some drove, some walked - to their new Russell St. church home, nestled on a quiet residential street, not far from Oakland Ave. Rev. Davis served as Third New Hope’s pastor until 1960, at which time the congregation elected Rev. James Walker to lead the church as its second pastor. Rev. Walker, however, served less than a year. On February, 1961, church members elected Rev. G.P. Chapman as their third pastor. Under Rev, Chapman’s leadership, a Youth Choir was formed, along with the Usher Board, Nurses Guild, and Benevolent and Social Outreach Program. Sister Alfoncya Keys created the Mothers Board and Missionary Society. Additionally, she was instrumental in registering the church as active members of the Michigan Baptist District Association; The Baptist, Missionary and Educational State Convention; and the National Baptists Convention, USA, Inc. Deacon Keys served as Third New Hope’s Sunday School Superintendent for many years. He also once served as choir director. In 1974, the congregation held a mortgage-burning service for its Russell St. edifice. Third New Hope was certainly growing, which sparked Rev. Chapman to contemplate the church’s next move. In June, 1977, Third New Hope made its move…again; this time the church purchased a much larger facility at 12650 Linwood on Detroit’s west side. Chapman soon resigned after rendering 16 years of service as Third New Hope’s pastor. Enter: Minister Edward L. Branch. Minister Branch’s road to pastoring Third New Hope in 1977 is one of interest. Church historians recalled that in 1977, Third New Hope was nearing its annual Men’s Day Program, which was always held in October. Another minister was scheduled to preach at the event, but ultimately was unable to keep the engagement. Instead, he asked Minister Branch, a young, 23 year-old to take his place on the program. Minister Branch accepted. It was duly noted that most of the church members were in pure awe of the electrifying preaching rendered by young Minister Branch. “He was preaching and walking on the benches,” said longtime member Curtissine Young, who later became a pioneering deacon at Third New Hope. “He was really hooping, but telling the story, which I liked. After the church heard him preach, we kind of decided that we wanted him to become our next pastor.” While many were spellbound by young Minister Branch, a Chicago native, some members thought he was far too young to lead the church. “What could this young boy teach us about God,” some said, according to those who were there. “If he is elected as our next pastor, members will leave.” Yet, young Minister Branch was well qualified for the job. Perhaps the preaching Phenom’s biggest supporter was ultimately the legendary Rev. C.L. Franklin, senior pastor of nearby New Bethel Baptist Church. Minister Branch was an assistant pastor under Franklin. Minister Branch had also once served as assistant pastor at Greater New Jerusalem Missionary Church on Dexter Ave.
On December 18, 1977, through God’s grace and ordained order that no one could revoke, Minister Edward L. Branch was overwhelmingly elected as Third New Hope’s fourth pastor. He delivered his first official sermon as Third New Hope’s new pastor on Christmas morning, December 25, 1977. Pastor Branch subsequently named Rev. Clarence Bray to serve as assistant pastor. Pastor Branch and his wife, Lanell, affectionately called Sister Lanell, hit the road running. Pastor Branch began to teach church members about giving God’s way, through tithes and offerings, according to Malachi 3: 8-10. In addition to preaching, Pastor Branch overhauled and strengthened the choir. He was its organist, pianist, and lead soloist. Sister Lanell, barely in her 20s, served as choir director, selected its music, taught Sunday School, and conducted weekly bible classes. With the Branches at its helm, Third New Hope evolved appreciatively. In 1983, Pastor Branch established the Bible Institute, which offered Christian classes to members of all ages. The following year, he facilitated international missions and evangelistic projects that fed people in Grand River, Haiti, and subsequently supported a missionary in Brazil. However, Third New Hope on Linwood could no longer accommodate its continuous growth. Therefore, in the early spring of 1985, the church, under the leadership of Pastor Branch, purchased its present edifice, located at 12850 Plymouth Rd. and Steel St., on the city’s far west side. Many members who experienced the move, remember assembling at the Linwood location on Easter Sunday, April 7, 1985, to be part of a grand motorcade to the new Plymouth Rd. church. When members arrived on Plymouth, they proudly entered their new House of Worship in an ordained procession, singing the spiritual hymn, “He Has Done Marvelous Things.” The title and lyrics of the song remain true for Third New Hope, because…God has done, and continues to do, many marvelous things for and through this church. In 1988, Third New Hope created the Heritage Center for African American Religious Studies, which uniquely offers a powerful platform for spiritually empowering both the clergy and individuals of laity. In 1991, the Single and Married Enrichment Sessions (SAMES) formed for single and married members to respectively gain better Christian perspectives as to who they are in God’s word and plan. In 1992, the Men’s and Women’s Ministries were formed to provide spiritual direction and empowerment to both genders, as they respectively and spiritually walk with and for Christ. In 1993, after intense prayer, Pastor Branch unveiled “Vision 2000,” a three-phase plan to improve the church grounds, renovate the current church structure, and provide an expanded level of service to the congregation and greater community. The plan called for Third New Hope to ultimately build a community center, adjacent (west) to the church. Always a leader and never a follower, Pastor Branch stepped over the cutting-edge of traditional Baptist ministry, when in the early 1990s, he ordained Third New Hope’s first two women deacons: Curtisstine Young and Genetta Y. Hatcher, the latter of whom, is now the campus pastor of Third New Hope West. In 1998, Pastor Branch ordained Third New Hope’s first woman minister, Jacqueline Nelson, who was actually licensed by Pastor Branch to preach in 1992. Pastor Branch’s decision to recognize and appoint women as deacons, ministers, and trustees was not always viewed favorably amid some very traditional Baptist members, which prompted a few to depart from Third New Hope. However, never wavering from his visions and assignments from God, Pastor Branch continued to empower women to serve under the auspices of Third New Hope Baptist Church. In 1995, the Pastoral Care Ministry was organized to assist the pastor in providing special prayers, counseling and visitations to members experiencing illnesses, bereavements, and family or personal crisis.

In November, 1997, based on what God placed in her creative spirit, Sister Lanell created “The Voice,” a colorful, artistic monthly church bulletin, filled with eye-popping graphics and pertinent information depicting exactly what’s going on at Third New Hope (The Hope). To this day, “The Voice” has been widely emulated by other churches in Detroit and beyond. In 2008, Third New Hope launched Tri Unity Community Development Corporation. This non-profit entity was created to empower entrepreneurs who provide opportunities and services that elevate the spirit of the city’s many communities. Third New Hope Baptist Church continues to grow, and now has three campuses which offer five Sunday worship services. Third New Hope’s Main Campus, 12850 Plymouth Rd., offers services at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., and 12 Noon. In 2010, Third New Hope launched its second campus; known as the West Campus. Dr. Genetta Y. Hatcher serves as campus pastor. In 2013, God gave Pastor Branch another vision which was to enlarge our territory and continue with Kingdom Expansion. January, 2014, the third worship location, the Northwest Campus was launched under the direction of our Kingdom Expansion Director and Campus Pastor, Dr. Velva Burley Flowers.

On April 24, 2013, Third New Hope launched its first radio ministry, which produced “The Voice of Hope.” The spiritually-rich weekly radio program, hosted by Pastor Branch, is heard each Wednesday at 12:45 p.m. on WEXL 1340 AM - Glory Radio. In 2015, Third New Hope renovated, greatly expanded and beautified one of its many parking lots, which will serve the growing congregation and visitors. The spacious parking lot on the west side of the church will also serve the needs of Third New Hope’s future community center. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirt, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20) On March 20, 2016, Third New Hope celebrates its 60th anniversary. As the church continues to grow and continues to make history, its members feel truly blessed to have a House of Worship that has evolved into a powerful beacon of light for Christ. The church proactively reaches beyond its four walls, into the community and beyond, to help those in need, and those who seek the promises and salvation of Jesus Christ, our Risen Lord and Savior. Down through the years, God’s been good to Third New Hope. Perhaps, Pastor Edward L. Branch says it best: “God is up to something! What’s ours to do is to find our something within the something God is up to, and partner with God to make great things happen in our world.” For 60 years - and counting - Third New Hope Baptist Church has made great things happen…and the best is yet to come! Research, interviews, and the compilation of the aforementioned account of Third New Hope Baptist Church’s history was facilitated by Third New Hope’s Research and History Ministry, specifically for the church’s 60th anniversary (March 20, 2016).
Celebrating the 60 th Church Anniversary of 3 rd New Hope Baptist Church, Congratulations 3rd New Hope Baptist Church for your tenacious perseverance in promoting the gospel of Jesus Christ during these past 60 years.
