Siser Cynthia Perkins Smith is a proud native Alabamian. She is fifth of nine siblings born to the late Newt and Callie Perkins of Bessemer, Alabama. She received her early education in the Bessemer Public School System. There she was nurtured in a loving home greatly influenced by her mother, Mrs. Callie Perkins. Considering all her accomplishments, Cynthia contributes all to her personal relationship with God since early childhood. Her favorite passage is I Corinthians 13th Chapter which she learned as a child. Cynthia earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama and continued studies at Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Mrs. Smith taught in the Catholic and Public School Systems for several years both in Alabama and in Michigan.

Sister Smith served thirteen years as President of the Michigan District Baptist Association Minister’s Wives and Widows and ten years President of the Woman’s Auxiliary of the Michigan District Baptist Association. Sister Smith is serving her sixth year as President of the B. M. & E State Convention, Women’s Ministry. She has chaired and co-chaired the Annual Parade of Roses Scholarship Luncheon, has served as an Instructor for the B.M. & E. State Congress of Christian Education and Convention, eighteen years of teaching the Minister’s Wives and Widows of the National Baptist Convention, Congress of Christian Education and more than a decade on the Oratorical Commission of the Congress. When she speaks , people listen, because they recognize the anointing on her life.

In January 2015, Sister Smith was appointed Midwest Region Vice President of The National Baptist Convention, Woman’s Auxiliary. In January 2017, President, Dr. Jerry Young appointed Sister Smith as the President of the Woman’s Auxiliary for the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. Sister Smith is a member of the historic New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. Under the leadership of her husband/pastor, Rev. Robert Smith, Jr., she is former Director of the Children’s Ministry (18 years), and she served as Kindergarten Sunday School Teacher in the Children’s Division for twenty-five years. She is actively involved with the Christian Education Commission, the Women’s Ministry and Mission Ministry. In 2007 she organized and facilitated the growing Tuesday, Hour of Power Bible Study Group.

Sister Smith was privileged to attend the Baptist World Alliance, Women’s Leadership Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa and The World Congress in Durban, South Africa in July 2015. She has received many accolades and honors including the “Grace A. Cobb Missionary Award”, The Michigan Chronicle Salute to First Ladies Award and the B.M.& E. State Convention Ushers Speaker’s Award.

Sister Smith’s special speaking privileges include Nassau, Bahamas, Frankfurt, Germany, Brooklyn, New York, Houston, Texas, The All Baptist Assembly in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Alabama State Convention in Selma, Alabama and the National Baptist Convention held in New Orleans, Louisiana and Nashville, Tennessee.

Sister Smith and Pastor Robert Smith, Jr. celebrated their 44th Wedding Anniversary in December 2016. They have four adult children, Sherique, Conderidge, Terique and Erma (god-daughter). The joys of her life are her four grandchildren, Joshua, Austin, Grace and Lauren.

Greetings Brothers and Sisters, How wonderful it is for us to gather again for the Annual Parade of Roses, Beaus and Buds Scholarship Luncheon.

This is an event that we all look forward to.

This luncheon offers big benefits. With the proceeds from today, we are able to help our young people financially as they pursue their educational goals.

Our Chairpersons, Sister Donica Chambers and Sister Tamela Washington did an outstanding job in chairing this Luncheon along with the District Presidents and Vice Presidents. You all exemplified the true meaning of Team Work.

Parade of Roses, Rosebuds and Beaus . “Honoring Unsung Sheroes and Heroes” 2017 Unsung Sheroes and Heroes Missionary Vernell Steele was born in Maxwell, PA to the late Rev. Mack and Larnell Walton. She was number 8 out of 12 children. At 15 years old she started playing piano at her fathers’ church. In 1957, Sister Steele moved to Detroit where she continued to spread her music ministry playing for various churches throughout the city.

Missionary Steele joined Peace & Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Arthur Dozier. She remained the Minister of Music for 28 years. Missionary Steele wore many different hats both fashionable and spiritual. She organized three different senior choirs at local senior homes, she also served as Sunday school teacher, youth director, Pastors Aid coordinator, organizer of a food program through Gleaners, she operated a soup kitchen for sheltered homeless and most recently she organized her churches first over 60 choir called “The Golden Voices.”

Missionary Steel is the physical mother of three children, ten grand children and six great grandchildren but she has been the spiritual mother of a multitude.

Missionary Steele’s favorite verse is Matthew 6:33 “Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.”

VERNELL STELLE Mrs. May Rean Noyd was born on May 11, 1942. She is the oldest of eight children.

She was educated in the Lauderdale County Public School System. In 1959, May moved to Detroit to continue her education, attending Lewis Business College, graduating in 1961 with a Certificate in Secretarial Science.

Sister Noyd is married to the love of her life for fifty-five years, Haywood Noyd, Jr. She retired from the City of Detroit after 22 years of service. Throughout her entire life, she has proven to be a loving, caring, faithful servant of the Almighty God. She is a proud member and serves faithfully at King David Missionary Baptist Church of Detroit for 47 years under the Pastorate of Reverend Sterling H. Brewer.

MAY REAN NOYD

Sister Noyd is a leader in numerous Ministries: Pastor’s Chorus, Sunday School, Musician, In-Touch Ministry, Kingdom Builders Ministry, Hospitality Coordinator of VBS, Events Coordinating Committee, Kitchen, Food Pantry and Spiritual Mother to a host of Children. She is committed to the Lord through service. Sister Noyd has served as Recording Secretary for the Congress of Christian Education of the New Rising Star of Hope District Association for fifteen years.

Her favorite Scripture is “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Galatians 6:9 Jacqueline Rayner has been a widow since 2006. She is the mother of son, Sonyour Rayner and Sister Rayner is humbled and honored that God has used her on this pilgrim journey.

Sister Rayner has a heart for the underprivileged. She works with the homeless and lowly of us, as Jesus has shown love and favor towards the Rayner family, she can show the same love to others realizing that Jesus died for all of us.

Sister Rayner loves to tell the story of the goodness and saving power of the Gospel. So has she helps to feed the physical needs of others, Sister Rayner is also sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.

Sister Rayner’s life is summed up in the phrase; “I’m just a nobody, trying to tell everybody about somebody, who can save anybody” and Jesus is Lord and He is coming back.”

Parade of Roses, Rosebuds and Beaus . “Honoring Unsung Sheroes and Heroes” 2017 Unsung Sheroes and Heroes Martha Walker was born in Catherine, Alabama. She is a graduate of Allen Institute in Mobile, Alabama. Sister Walker is a widow. Sister Walker is retired.

She has two sons and two grandchildren.

Sister Walker has been a member of the Abundant Life Christian Church, formerly Williams Chapel, for sixty years. She has served faithfully in ministry through the years. Currently, Sister Walker serves as a member of the Ushers’ Ministry and her pastor is Rev. James C. Jones.

Her favorite scripture is Psalm 121. “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2 My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.”

Sister Walker can be heard singing her favorite song, “I will Trust in the Lord.”

Sister Walker enjoys cooking and her favorite quote is, “Expect the best, prepare

Sister Louise Wilson is the oldest of 6 siblings. She was married to the late Lawrence Wilson, Jr. for 51 years and the mother of 12 children. Sister Wilson has been a dedicated member of New Ebenezer Baptist Church for 21 years under the leadership of Pastor Wallace R. Mills, Jr. Sister Wilson has been cooking ever since she can remember. She can be described as a ‘culinary comforter’, she is able to turn basic ingredients into soothing meals that make your workday stress melt away; she pays attention to the visual details while not sacrificing overall flavor. Sister Wilson is a master manipulator, she can “turn your frown upside down” with carefully-crafted meals.

Sister Wilson has worked extremely hard in the kitchen of New Ebenezer Baptist Church for many years as well as for Brittany’s Delight and for all those organizations including BM&E, churches and individuals who have called upon her, they all thank you!

LOUISE WILSON

Her love for ministry is not limited to the kitchen, she also serves on the Christian Fellowship Ushers and attends Sunday School faithfully. Her favorite scripture is the 23rd Psalm and her favorite song is “I Won’t Complain.”

Robert Penick was born in Birmingham, Alabama on July 8, 1945. He moved to Montgomery, Alabama at the age of two. He was educated in the Montgomery, Alabama public school system.

Brother Penick joined the United States Air Force in 1962 where he was stationed at the Selfridge Air Force Base in Mount Clemens, Michigan. He was married in 1965.

Robert Penick joined Mount Charity Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. Wendell Spencer. His pastor now is Rev. Fredrick Belk.

Brother Penick serves faithfully on the Adult Usher Board. He attends Sunday School and Bible Class whenever possible. Brother Penick said, “I try to be the best at all that I do or try to do.” Brother Penick can often be found helping others and he is a man of his word. Brother Penick said, “I serve God by serving others in love.”

Parade of Roses, Rosebuds and Beaus . “Honoring Unsung Sheroes and Heroes” 2017 Unsung Sheroes and Heroes Sister Laratta DeBose was born in Columbia, S.C. to Willie and Mazie Wise. Her parents and only sister preceded her in death. At 11 months old, her loving and caring grandmother, aunts and uncles raised her in Cleveland, Ohio. At an early age, Sister DeBose was taught to love the Lord and she accepted Christ as her personal Savior; at the age of 5 she was baptized at East Mt. Zion Baptist Church and served on the children’s usher board.

Sister DeBose was educated in the Cleveland Public Schools, graduating from Jane Ad ams High School and John Hay Business School. She met and married Leon DeBose. They have two children, six grandchildren and one daughter-in-law. After moving to Detroit studied at the University of Phoenix until she was promoted to the superintendent staff at Detroit Public Schools. She retired in 2005 after 30 ½ years.

She joined the Beth Eden Missionary Baptist Church in 1974 under the leadership of Pastor Ocie Tabb Jr. She currently serves as a deaconess, a member of the culinary ministry, bereavement ministry, the church secretary and the administrative assistant to Pastor Isaiah Pettway.

LARATTA DeBOSE

Her favorite scripture is Psalm 91 and her favorite songs are I Come to the Garden Alone and True Friend. “Her philosophy for her life is simple…be a “True Friend”.

Delisha Banks-Holloway was the fourth child born to the late Bobby Banks Sr. and Delores Banks on August 21, 1973. She graduated from Edwin Denby High School in 1991. She attended The Detroit Business Institute where she received a certificate of completion in Business Accounting in 1993. She also studied Computer Applications and Machinery Technology at Focus Hope Machinist Training Institute. She later joined the United States Army and was given a medical discharge in 1995. She is currently employed at Fiat Chrysler Automotive (FCA).

Sister Holloway was reared in the Rightway Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of her grandfather, the late Pastor Matthew P. Harper. She currently and faithfully serves as: financial secretary (20 years), Sunday school teacher and church nurse. She also sings in the youth choir and pastors’ chorus. She is also on the mission board.

DELISHA BANKS- HOLLOWAY

Sister Holloway has been happily married to Mr. George Holloway, Jr. for seventeen years. They are the parents of five children. She is known as a beautiful person who is always ready to roll up her sleeve and lend a helping hand.

Sister Holloway realizes, “Only what you do for Christ will last”.

Christian - Daughter - Sister - Wife - Mother - Friend - Pianist - Activist Glorius is the seventh of nine children: seven girls and two boys. While attending Highland Park Community College at the young age of sixteen, Glorius did not have class on Wednesday and became a member of the Women’s Department under the leadership of Sis. Alberta Davis. She has worked with every Prospect District President. She currently holds the position of Financial Secretary. Glorius has been a part of the BM&E since its inception. She has supported many women’s department events; she was active in the youth department which helped her overcome the fear of public speaking as a stutterer. She never said no when asked to speak.

GLORIUS JEAN EWING

Mother Ewing’s current ministry is an assignment by Pastor Boles to partner with Mother Caldwell on a daily teleconference Morning Prayer Line. The Prayer Line began as a one month assignment and has grown into a morning fellowship for the past two years. Glorius favorite song is Blessed Assurance. Her favorite scriptures are Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me” and the 23rd Psalms – “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want”
