The king loved a princess, the page loved a princess, They both loved her. A princess also loved them. They all loved each other. But one day an incredibly terrible thing became. A cat ate the king , a dog ate a page, a mouse ate the princess. But to you, there was no regret, my dear baby. The king was from sugar, the page was from gingerbread, the princess was from marzipan.

HUNGARY These two lullabies are the most common and well-known ones in Hungary. The rhythm and the tune are very simple and easy to follow for children. The text of the first one tells the baby to go asleep as the night has come and calls the baby a ’rosebud’ (rózsabimbó). Tente, baba, tente Itt van már az este Aludj ingó-bingó Kicsi rózsabimbó The second one uses a bit more complicated language, and tells about some far away music that the child can hardly hear, and cannot catch as the wind blows it away. Szól a nóta halkan, Éppen csak hogy halljam, Levegőben ide-oda kanyarog a dallam. Utána ha mennél, semerre se lelnéd, Elvitte az esti szellő, akárcsak a pernyét.

ROMANIA The action takes place in the Museum in Ocna Sibiului, a private collection of traditional folk costumes and objects that used to be found in ordinary homes in the last century in Romania. This short movie represents two girls dressed in traditional costumes, from our area, with the help of the lullaby are trying to put their dolls to sleep. Then they are hanging a lighted candle near the icons and are praying to their guardian angel for protection. This short film presents a traditional aspect of everyday life that has been preserved even today by many families.
Music and lyrics : Narcisa Suciu (famous Romanian singer and song-writer) Teacher advisor: Maria Fratila
SPAIN Our pupils‘ parents (some of them are teachers in our school) sang lullabies to their children. This activity was held within th project Comenius E.U.R.O.P.E. These are three different songs for children, parents sang them when they were babies.

Greece Babies grow up and begin their own journeys, but lullabies remain to remind us of their infancy. This Greek lullaby sings the journeys a mother wishes for her child: journeys to the sky or to the sea. No matter the destination, a mother’s wishes attend every step of her child’s travels.

ITALY Pinocchio
Once upon a time, a carpenter called Geppetto, built a wooden puppet and called it Pinocchio. “How nice it would be if it were a real baby!” sighed he when he finished painting it. That night, a good fairy heard him and decided to fulfill his desire. “Awake, inanimate wood, for now now you have a soul!”, and with her magic wand she touched the pupput. “Pinocchio , be always a good , brave and selfless boy “ said the Fairy “ and one day you’ll be a real boy !“ Then, she addressed to Jiminy Cricket: “I appoint you guide and counsellor of Pinocchio,“ she added, before disappearing in a thousand flashes of light. Imagine the delight of Geppetto when he discovered that his little man of wood could move and talk! The next morning he sent him to school like a real boy. “Goodbye, son, come back soon!” Pinocchio was a little naughty, so, disobeying his father, hew went to the terrible Mangiafuoco, a puppeteer who promised to make him famous. He enjoyed a lot singing and dancing with the other puppets, but, when the show was over, Mangiafuoco shut him in a cage. Suddenly, there appeared the Blue Fairy: “Why did not you
29
go to school?” she asked. Pinocchio answered with a lie and his nose began to grow ... Only when he told the truth, the Fairy freed him and his nose was back to normal. On the way home, Pinocchio saw a coach loaded with cheering kids. The coachman told him that he was headed to Toyland, where kids were allowed to do whatever they wanted. “Pinocchio, come back!” Jiminy Cricket ran after him. But the puppet would not listen to him. There Pinocchio met a new boy, Candlewick. The two ate as many sweets as they could and enjoyed themselves very much. But he soon discovered that in Toyland the lazy and rude kids were turned into donkeys. When he began to spring two ears and a long tail, Pinocchio ran away desperately, followed by his faithful friend Jimmy Cricket. Together they returned to the house of Geppetto, but they found nobody. “Who knows what had happened to him!” At that moment, a dove brought them a message: while Geppetto was looking for Pinocchio everywhere, he was swallowed by a whale and now he was her prisoner. “I want to save him!” decided the puppet. Arriving at the sea, he dived an dived till he found his father in the belly of the whale. But how to get out of there? So he lit a fire and the smoke made the
30
whale sneeze so strong that she opened its mouth. Pinocchio and Geppetto escaped on a raft. The puppet helped his father to swim in the middle of the waves till they finally reached the shore! But as soon as they arrived, Pinocchio, for the great effort fainted. Grief-stricken, Geppetto took him home. The Blue Fairy, awoke him and, as promised, rewarded his courage and his goodness by transforming Pinocchio into a real boy.
