OUR SCHOOL Our school is situated in Lavinio Lido di Enea, a little suburb of Anzio, a touristic and residential town of about 56,000 inhabitants situated on the Tyrrhenian coast of Lazio 50 km far from Rome. The city of Anzio is well known for the ancient ruins of roman villas and for the landing of troops named after the city during the Second World War (January, 22th 1944). Anzio and the whole the region where our school is situated in are characterized by a strong migratory flow both from Rome and from Europe, Asia and Africa. During the last two decades, Lavinio has gradually become a multicultural context, where many different ethnics, cultures and languages find place. Our school has 140 teachers, 32 of whom are employed as special needs teachers; on 1310 pupils aged from 3 to

14 years, 340 do not have Italian origins (37% of them comes from countries belonging to the European community, while 63% from non EU countries). In kindergarten, primary school and scuola secondaria di primo grado; there are 58 pupils with disabilities supported by special needs teachers who work in our school. Moreover, there are 37 children with specific developmental disorders who are not supported a special needs teacher, but for whom teachers use specific teaching strategies. As described before, our school embraces pupils from different countries, and our staff, teachers in particular, is committed to promoting the best opportunities for them. On one hand, the non teaching staff takes care of helping families giving them all the necessary information about the school and its educative offer. On the

other hand, the teachers dedicate themselves to promoting children’s well being and social inclusion by adapting the educative strategies and tools to fulfill the needs of each student. The mission of our school aims at promoting the reciprocal comprehension among different cultures in order to instill in the European citizens of the future what is necessary to recognize and to appreciate the common values, without neglecting the respect for ourselves, for our own and for other countries, the latters considered as parts of a wider whole (Europe as the world as well). We think that such a way of considering the formative actions may contribute to the formation of future generations that will have the possibility to grow without territorial, cultural and linguistic boundaries, because boundaries can join but divide as well.

Capo d’ Anzio lighthouse is a pride and an important tourist attraction for our town. It has a very ancient history. In fact, it was rebuilt several times during the centuries and it only became operative in 1870. Currently, the white lighthouse is 21 meters tall and projects its two bundle of white lights toward the sea for leading skippers at night as well as illuminating the suggestive Nero’s Villa ruins.

Tor Caldara is a natural reserve situated between Anzio and Lido Di Lavinio. It protects an example of mediterranean forest which is mainlyl of evergreens: hom oaks, cork oaks, shrub heather strawberry trees. The many sulphurous springs are a result of the volcanic gases that rise up from the peripheral roots of the latium volcano In the reserve we can admire what remains of the watch tower built in 1560.
