From The Editor

Russia is under the spotlight for the mattress industry There are major markets for the sleep product industry. The US leads the way in this potential. European markets are also huge. Middle East and Balkans paths are other alternatives. As an emerging market Russian Federation and its surrounding countries also bear big potential for mattresses and all requirements for mattress manufacturing. Mebel Expo is one of the major gates to penetrate or to expand market share in this lucrative market. It is the largest annual furniture show and the main industry event in Russia and Eastern Europe. The show brings together leading global brands and manufacturers, designers and interior decorators to showcase new collections and the best items of the furniture fashion. Participating in the exhibition everyone gets a great chance to enjoy business communication and find new opportunities for development. This is so for buyers and sellers. The exhibition presents the latest trends of the furniture market and brings together manufacturers and distributors with customers. The exposition includes a great variety of elite and budget furniture for bedrooms, dining rooms, living rooms, nurseries and kitchens, as well as couches and armchairs, fittings, finishing materials and various decor items. It is the right place where supply and demand meet. Turkey is well represented in this show. We, as Istanbul Magazine Group, will be there with Sleep Well, Sleep Tech and Décor magazines to promote Turkish potential. We will wrap up 2019 with this issue and get ready for 2020 which will start with European shows for us. As we do for almost 40 years, we will be in Germany for Heimtextil, which opens on January 7. We will traditionally continue with Domotex Hannover and IMM Cologne. We will then pass to Paris for Maison & Objet. As everybody does, we hope 2020 be a lucrative and very active year for all industries including the furniture industry in general and sleep products industry in particular. We hope very lucrative business for all involved. See you in Moscow with this issue and in Germany with the first issues of 2020. We wish a very happy, healthy and prosperous year!

The shape of restful sleep is in the waves: The BIRKENSTOCK Body Contour System

A regenerative night’s sleep is just one smooth bed away. BIRKENSTOCK’s exclusive body contour system soothes away the stresses and strains of everyday life to deliver restful, pressure-free sleep. After all, a good night’s sleep is the best way to start the day. Conceived in collaboration with scientists at the Munich Erogonomics Institue (EIM). The centerpiece of the BIRKENSTOCK sleep concept, the idea behind the body contour system, is simple but effective:

the undulating form of the BIRKENSTOCK body contour system corresponds to the shape of the human body, which it transposes into 7 ergonomic zones on coordinated slatted frames and mattresses. From the elastic head and neck zone and the cushioning lumbar zone through to the soft heel zone, the 7-zone ergonomic cut of the body contour system eases the strain on the body and spine in the places where lying down increases the pressure on the mattress and slatted frame. At

the same time, the body is supported in the right places, also when lying on its side. Thanks to its high point elasticity and optimum relief, the system facilitates regeneration of the entire musculoskeletal system and exceptional resting comfort. The fine-tuning necessary to relieve the pressure on the body comes courtesy of the BIRKENSTOCK overlay in natural latex and cork granulate, which is integrated into all BIRKENSTOCK mattresses. The result: feel-good beds - from head to toe.

Lenzing traces its fibers with block chain technology 18

Lenzing – The Lenzing Group, world market leader in specialty fibers made from the renewable material wood, is strengthening its leading position in sustainability in the textile industry. Lenzing will use blockchain technology to support its TENCEL™ branded fiber business, ensuring complete transparency and traceability for brands and consumers of its fibers in the finished garment. After evaluating various initiatives Lenzing decided to join the platform of the Hong Kong based technology company TextileGenesis™ to accomplish this ambition. Consumers increasingly want to understand the ingredients and suppliers of the products they buy, requesting a new level of transparency and traceability. The supply chain transparency from wood to garment and home textiles will enable all customers and partners to identify TENCEL™ fibers and the respective wood source in each production and distribution step. Thanks to a QR code on the final garment, consumers will be able to detect the origin of the clothes they intend to buy. “With LENZING™ ECOVERO™ branded fibers Lenzing was the frontrunner in physical traceability and is now entering

the age of digital traceability. This milestone in transparency is a further strong commitment to sustainability”, says Stefan Doboczky, Chief Executive Officer of the Lenzing Group. “Together with TextileGenesis™, we aim to create an unmatched level of transparency for brands and consumers. With this step Lenzing

will further help to green up the textile industry.” Lenzing will carry out several pilot tests over the next few months involving partners along the entire value chain. Lenzing expects the platform to be fully operational as of 2020.

Vivid innovation in mattress packaging machines: “ELEKTROTEKS

Elektroteks was founded in 1990 by engineer Osman Guler to develop electronic and software solutions for the textile industry. In 2003, Elektroteks transformed its field of expertise into the production of mattress and quilting machines with its extensive knowledge gained in partnership with different machine manufacturers in various sectors.

In 2004, the company pioneered many innovations such as first double-needle producing continuous quilting ma-

chines in Turkey. It is progressing with the participation of the mattress industry by having years of experience and 2nd generation of engineers in beds, taking confident steps towards becoming a leading manufacturer of quilting production technology in Turkey. This year, the company took part again in Sleep Well Expo

21

Sales Manager Baran Ozis said, “We took part in the fair with bed packaging machines which we are focused on. In addition, we exhibited bed glue lines, roll pack machines and side border machines at the fair. In the global framework, 2019 is a positive year for the bedding sector. Unfortunately, this is not the case for Turkey. We follow the fairs in order to keep the pulse of the global market and follow the developments closely. We will continue to participate in fairs such as Interzum and ISPA in 2020.

24

An experienced face in bed cover market: “Bed Covers” Estalished in 1989, Bed Covers continued its production in a closed area of 3500 m2 in Saray with quality assurance and took part in Sleep Well Expo this year again. Bed Covers’ product range consists of bed covers, bed linen, quilts and mattress covers.

25

Hakan Gunaydin, an official of the company, which is an important manufacturer of mattress covers in Turkey, says that they worked diligently for the fair. Hakan Gunaydin noted, “We covered all our bed linen and home textile products at the fair. We do business with world brands in terms of design and fabric properties of our new products. The fabrics of our products have features such as grounding static electricity in the body, keeping cool and providing adrenaline.” Gunaydin said the following in his assessment of 2019: “For economic and political reasons, 2019 was painful for the bed and supply industries. It’s not just the scale of Turkey, from the countries that we have exports, our observations show that this is a worldwide problem. I estimate that there is a 30% contraction compared to 2018. People avoid spending money. ”

“We are waiting for 2020 with new designs” Hakan Gunaydin expresses that they are hopeful for the year 2020 that comes after an economically bad year of 2019. “Our expectation for 2020 is still positive. We make our preparations both as infrastructure, technologically and by producing new models. We are conducting a special study on design. If there will be no economic crises and fights, the bed industry can be expected to grow by 20% -30% next year.”

Baleko export to the world by thrust 28

Baleko Export Company operates in both produces some products and sells the products of various companies. While explaining their success Baleko managers say, “The importance we attach to trust and quality in our business is the differentiating points of our business in Baleko. Today, we are a company that exports to more than 25 countries by emphasizing on customer satisfaction.” Baleko Export Company was established in Kayseri in 2018 and entered the mattress sector. Today, Baleko exports to more than 25 countries and emphasizes on customer satisfaction. It also operates as a reliable foreign trade

company for other companies operating in furniture, mattress and mattress base manufacturing. The company has taken part in 2019 Sleep Well Expo. Bayram Kok of the company says, “As a manufacturer we sell auxiliary products used in the production of mattresses, bases and furniture. Since we have participated in Sleep Well Expo before, we now focused on our fabric, metal and plastic products.” Bayram Kok, who emphasized that the mattress industry as well as all other sectors were affected by the economic fluctuations in 2019, said: “We are a new and growing company, so our sales are up. We

are on the way to 2019 without being affected by the economic fluctuations. Our hope is that this growth will continue in the years to come.” Stating that they would focus on fairs as a foreign trade company, Kok said, “Our next target will be to take part in Interzum fair. We continue our preparations. Our marketing team is also active. We sell products from various companies such as Boyteks fabrics, Nerteks yarns and Sefox products. The importance we attach to trust and quality in our business makes our company, Baleko, distinguished from others.”

Akdemir Machinery, doping of fairs for economic impasse 30

Akdemir Machinery, which started production in Kayseri in 1934, sees fairs important in terms of promotion of new products and face-to-face communication as a solution to economic fluctuations in their search for new markets. Akdemir Machinery, which lists the names of the fairs they intended such as Düsseldorf K, Plast Eurasia and Interzum, aims to stimulate the stagnation of 2019 through fairs. Serving successfully in the Turkish industry for 84 years, Akdemir Makine has specialized in the projects and designs it has made on special machines for plastic,

sofa and home textile sectors for the last 30 years.

“We are hopeful of Sleep Well Fair” Akdemir Machine, taking part in the sixth edition of Sleep Well Expo, Turkey’s only trade fair on mattress and bedding products. Osman Akdemir, foreign trade manager of the company, said: “We have been in business since 1934 and we have been manufacturing machinery since 1991. We are hopeful of the Sleep Well fair that we attended for the first time this year.”

Akdemir said that the year 2019 has been progressing slow from the economic point of view and added, “2019 is sluggish compared to previous years. Contraction is felt both in domestic and foreign markets. We see that the fairs are the best solution to save our company from such economic fluctuations.” Akdemir, who emphasized the importance of market search and expanding the diversity of customer portfolio, said, “Our priority is to participate in Düsseldorf K, Plast Eurasia and Interzum fairs. We are also in the process of evaluating other fairs held in India and America.”

Mattress industry in Russia offers challenging opportunities 36

The habits changed and more mattress-conscious consumer understanding prevailed throughout the country As an emerging market Russia has huge potential in almost in sectors. The mattress industry is not an exemption. More and more people in Russia choose a modern bed and mattress as sleeping accommodation, especially in big cities among customers with average or higher than average income. Now mattress is not just an addition to bed, but almost the principal character in the bedroom, from the point of view of both customers and progressive civilized market, as sales of ready

sleeping accommodations became profitable. This approach to mattress was formed by no means spontaneous: this is the achievement of market professionals. Thanks to them mattress became a separate entry in official statistics. World mattress production is estimated to be over 30 billion soon. Asia and Pacific is the main manufacturing area with a 41% share of world mattress production; China alone accounts for almost 80% of the region’s

production. The second largest producing area in the world is North America, which accounts for 32% of worldwide production. Western Europe ranks third with an incidence of 16% on total production, followed by Central East Europe and Russia and by South America. In Russia, sleeping solutions have traditionally been very modest; sofa beds and simple mattress solutions are still the largest product categories on the Russian market.

38

However, as the Russian economy improves and the space for living gets larger, we see an increase in the sales of more exclusive beds, mattresses and even box springs. Cities such as Moscow and St Petersburg are still the focal areas for increased consumption, but other cities are picking up, and shopping malls are continuously developed in new areas. Through the acquisition of Askona in 2010, Hilding Anders is the undisputed market leader with a market share of approximately 30%. The penetration rate for beds in Russia is still far behind comparative countries such as Brazil, providing an explanation for the vast development speed within the industry in Russia. Our Russian company Askona is the leading player on the Russian market with a multibrand portfolio, including the

license for the US brands King Koil and Serta. Since late 2012, the Group brands Bicoflex, AndrÊ Renault and Jensen are part of the Hilding Anders retail concept, with currently roughly 100 outlets in major Russian cities. Askona also manufactures private label beds and mattresses, and is the main supplier to a number of large furniture chains in the Russian market. Despite the radical shrink in Russia’s economy in last two-

three decades it is still a huge power at all areas including politics, military, defense, economy and social points of view. It was normally strong before the USSR dissolved because it was a closed market but the culture of sleeping and living level had shrunk the manufacturing and trade. After the free market policies and opening up to the world, there have been large opportunities for everybody willing to do business with Russia.

40

After being one of the most dynamic sectors on the furniture market in recent years, sleep products sector turned into a harsh competition arena. Although we see general growth rate reduction and the market is reaching mature phase, there is still a place for young players in the Russian market. Here and there free niches are appearing; moreover, innovative research of types of mattress fillings retains its potential. In Russia, sleeping solutions have traditionally been very modest; sofa beds and simple mattress solutions such as futons are still the largest product categories on the Russian market, according to Hilders Anders, the owner of World famous brand Askona. “However, as the Russian economy improves and the space for living gets larger, we see an increase in the sales of more exclusive beds, mattresses and even box springs. Cities such as Moscow and St Petersburg are still the focal areas for increased consumption, but other cities are picking up, and shopping malls are continuously developed in new areas. “Through the acquisition of Askona in 2010, Hilding Anders is the undisputed market leader with a market share of approximately 30%. Our Russian company Askona is the leading player on the Russian market with a multibrand portfolio, including the license for the US brands King Koil and Serta. Since late 2012,

42

Russia’s changing retail and consumer landscape brings new challenges but also new opportunities. the Group brands Bicoflex, André Renault and Jensen are part of the Hilding Anders retail concept, with currently roughly 100 outlets in major Russian cities. Askona also manufactures private label beds and mattresses, and is the main supplier to a number of large furniture chains in the Russian market.” The Russian furniture market shrank almost 25% year-on-year in volume terms in 2015 due to the country’s economic and financial recession. Sales fell across all types of furniture including mattresses. The greatest drop in the household furniture segment was seen in upholstered furniture, which has the largest market share. The household furniture market fell 24.4%. Due to the increased cost of raw materials and components, the devaluation of the

Ruble, and the resulting increase in import prices, the average producer (and importer) price in Russia rose 34% year on year to over 4,000 Rubles in 2015. As a result, the size of the furniture market only grew 1.5% in value terms. Consumer behavior also changed due to the economic recession. According to the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM), the percentage of buyers of cheap furniture increased from 22% in January to 39% in September. Consumers also bought less furniture or stopped buying all together.

44

Despite a sharp rise in the cost of furniture manufacturing, consumer prices only went up 13.5% due to a shift in demand for cheaper furniture. According to analysts at Express Obzor, household furniture sales slowed down dramatically; the growth rate also did not exceed +1% against the 2014 level. In 2015, only 20.3 million units of furniture were sold while in 2013 this figure was 22.9 million units (-11.3%). In 2015, the average producer prices for furniture increased by 18.4% from 2014 when the growth rate was +12.4%. This is the largest increase since 2010. According to estimates by Express Obzor, in addition to the increased cost of imported accessories due to the devaluation, the price hike was also due to the Technical

Regulation of the Customs Union ‘On Safety of Furniture Products’, which came into effect on July 1, 2014. This regulation sets the permissible limit for formaldehyde emissions at 0.01 mg/m3 (E0,5). The greatest increase

in prices (+44.1%) was seen in upholstered furniture as it is manufactured using a lot of imported accessories, followed by bedroom furniture such as beds and wardrobes, which uses a lot of wood-based panels. The

46

growth of the average producer prices led to an 11.1% increase in the output of furniture in value terms. A decline in the Ruble/Dollar exchange rate in 2015 resulted in a sharp increase in the cost of imported furniture and hence in a lower demand. Annualized imports fell 36.3% in volume terms and exports returned to the 2011 levels. The sharp drop caused a decrease in the share of imported goods in the Russian market, from 57.9% in 2014 to 48.1% in 2015. The demand for cheaper furniture continues, with the exchange rate giving rise to nearly a twofold increase in prices even for inexpensive furniture. Furniture imports fell 42.6% in Dollar terms, while the aver-

age cost of imported products decreased by 8.4% to $51 per unit of furniture. The change in demand was also influenced by the reduction in customs duties on imported furniture after Russia joined the WTO.

A major reduction was seen in the cheap furniture segment, worth less than EUR1.8 per kilo of gross weight. At the time of Russia’s accession to the WTO, the customs duty on this type of furniture was EUR0.75 per kilo of

48

gross weight. By 2018, it will fall to EUR0.23. The breakdown of furniture imports by country did not change, led by China, followed by the Republic of Belarus and Ukraine. Sales culture Until very recently Russian consumers had a low awareness of brands and product preferences in the bedroom. Consumer electronics were high on the list. Only recently the trend to healthy sleep habits has gained ground which offers many opportunities. There still are resources for further increase of volume and boost of demand in the mattress sector. Advantageous conditions for players include free niches, high-technology innovations from materials suppliers, used by market leaders for generating unique competitive advantages of their products.

Despite gradual decrease of buying activity and average cost, mattress producers still have a wide field for marketing activities. In recent years the most noticeable trend was increase of retail location space. As leading players have mastered their own production of beds and accessories, offering customers full-value bedding solutions, it

is just natural that there was a need for more space to present these products. In general, the level of retail presentation has definitely increased because of the development of new networks and franchising projects of producers. Rising culture of sleeping accommodation

50

in Russia leads to decrease of mattresses’ lifecycle in Russian homes, slowly but steadily. According to a research held by Askona, the most leading mattress brand in Russia, average lifespan of a mattress in Russia is around 15 years. At the same time in Moscow and Moscow region, St. Petersburg and Leningrad region (generating 40% of sales in the sector) it is much lower now around 9 years. Big cities become main drivers for further decrease of this rate. However, Russia is yet to go a long way to reach average European standards of 10-12 years. “Market slowdown is always characterized by more interesting marketing competition”, Alexander Aluf, Commercial Director of official representative of Belarusian furniture factory “Vegas” in Russia says, “Producers are looking for and introducing new effective technological solutions in production and materials. On the one hand, by doing so they aim to decrease their expenses to get additional advantage on the price level; on the other hand — they are introducing new materials to the market. In general, this allows producer to compete successfully on the market”.

52

“We have a great opportunity to take advantage of this trade war” The US and China, which have set up the world's economic balance, have provided opportunities for countries wishing to expand their markets in a way with the recent wars between them. Turkish producers operate in the mattress sub industry, which are well aware of the tension between these two countries, are seeking new windows of opportunities for themselves in the sector.

Omer Karisman, Technology Manager (CTO) of Kozmos Textile answered our questions on US trade war between China and export-oriented trade wars. How do you interpret the impact of trade wars between China and the US in the sleep products market? How do you think the Turkish mattress sub-industry is affected by this situation? As I recently pointed out in our previous interview, Turkey is

recently got to a vantage point in regards for export opportunities against China, especially for labor intensive products. We can take advantage of our geological location by connecting affordable materials with affordable labor to export the added value. Turkey has a huge textiles and mattress materials industry. USA’s recent trade war with China allows us to be a middle man for all the trade happening both ways.

53

While material costs have fallen for us in regards of the extra workforce left unattended by USA the demand from them and the whole America continent has changed its focus to Turkey and similar Eurasian countries as a cheap labor and quality alternative. What are the precautions to take in Turkey’s import-export issues? We have a great opportunity to take advantage of this trade war to increase our export both in quantity and number of destinations. Despite the economical challenges on a country level Turkey can provide great labor on top of highly strategic geolocation for connecting product seekers and material manufacturers. Which country do you export most as a company? Which factors do you think play a role in these countries choosing a Turkish company? We already export to USA, Russia and many European countries such as Germany and

France. We look ahead to expand our reach to South America’s and Australia too. All of these customers first concern is quality and transparent business. It is highly important to maintain an open communication with your customer and deliver products up to par. What kind of suggestions can you offer to companies that want to expand their export network? There are countless opportunities from all over the world. It is still not very easy for the buyer to reach the right seller. Sellers should take action and reach out to potential markets with right products and offers. Studying the new markets thoroughly before jumping in is the most important step. Customers’ requirements and the way of doing business highly vary from market to market. And one last important point is to have a physical presence in the target country.

interzum guangzhou 2020 to serve up multitude of “Belt & Road” opportunities for upstream furniture production industry

China’s Belt and Road Initiative could not have come at a better time for Asia’s largest and most comprehensive woodworking machinery, furniture production and interiors trade fair. The industry is booming and manufacturers are hungry for a coveted booth space at the event every year.

Held in its namesake city from 28 – 31 March 2020, CIFM / interzum guangzhou is regarded by the industry as a key gateway for foreign furniture suppliers to enter the fast-growing China market and an ideal place to size up the competition.

67

With Guangzhou being an important city for the Maritime Silk Road in the hinterland of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area as well as the center of South China’s furniture manufacturing powerhouse, a growing number of buyers from the region are expected to descend at the event from 2020 and beyond. The “Belt and Road” wave Riding on the opportunities brought about by China’s Belt and Road Initiative, economies along the trade route are stepping up in expanding markets and at the same time importing high-quality resources, products and technologies. The world’s leading producers of furniture raw and auxiliary materials are jumping onto the bandwagon by

68

providing high-quality textiles, wood, woodworking machinery and furniture hardware for the global furniture manufacturing market. The Initiative has also given impetus to alleviate logistical issues - one of the bottlenecks restricting the development of the industry – with rapid progress driven by China to establish and better infrastructure and connectivity. Rise of custom furniture market Spanning 5,000 square meters, the expanded Custom Furniture Suppliers zone in Hall 14.1 is dedicated to showcasing a host of products such as accessories for upholstered furniture, textiles, hardware components and panels. The welcomed move came against the backdrop of stable growth rates of China’s custom furniture market at above 20 percent over the past seven years. 2018 saw an increase of 20.2 percent over the previous year to about US$41.4 billion. It is predicted that by 2020, the market size is expected to exceed US$48.5 billion. At present, market penetration of custom furniture stands at a low 30 percent, compared with 60-70 percent in developed countries, like the U.S. and South Korea. As the concept matures among Chinese consumers, demand is expected to extend from the current custom cabinets and wardrobes to the entire house, paving the way for tremendous growth. Insatiable demand for upholstered furniture Yet another much-anticipated enhancement made to the 2020

69

edition is a newly segmented Hall 12.1 to center on machinery for upholstered furniture production. Some big names to be featured include Duerkopp, Adler, Mammut(Germany), Robatech(Switzerland) and Baomo. Data reveals that in 2018, China’s sales of upholstered furniture reached US$90 billion, with the country becoming the world’s largest consumer of the product category. The boom has driven the upstream supply chain of raw and auxiliary materials such as leather, sponge, wood

and pneumatic components to prosper. Online visitor pre-registration has kickstarted. Successfully pre-registered visitors will enjoy free and fast track entry to the event, a show catalogue, PIAZZA drink vouchers and admission tickets to the Happy Hour networking reception. “Turkish companies, which are selfsufficient geographically and have enough raw materials, should focus on exports as soon as possible”

The trade wars between the US and China affect the mattress industry as well as other sectors. The US, which has reduced imports from Chinese firms, has become open to export opportunities for new countries. Considering this as an opportunity, Turkish companies accelerated their efforts. One of Turkey’s major brands in mattress exports, Innova Bedding emphasizes on focusing on export activities of domestic companies wishing to take advantage of this opportunity. How do you interpret the impact of the trade wars between China and the US on your industry? How

do you think the Turkish mattress supplier industry is affected? The trade wars between the US and China have led to positive developments in mattress industries of other countries. On my recent tour in Turkey, I observed that many of the manufacturers in Turkey got orders from American firms either directly or in the fairs. There were smiling faces in local companies that produce raw materials such as mattress fabrics and foams. We know that when our domestic products are compared with Chinese products ours are better in terms of both design and strength. Even if these trade wars were ended, the entry of Turkish mattresses

into the US will accelerate. How did the developments between China and the US in the supply of raw materials reflect on the market? Since the experiences between China and the United States do not show any stability, Chinese mattresses still find buyers in the American market. As long as a certain practice does not come into effect, it seems that China will continue to find buyers. What precautions should be taken in Turkey’s import-export efforts? On the commercial level, every market is open to Turkish

71

mattresses. We cannot be very successful especially in terms of finished products due to the fact that Turkish bedding manufacturers are not act export oriented and do not provide products in this field. Only ten companies are in the export market. The increase in finished product sales will also contribute to the opening of the bed industry to exports. Which country do you export most as a company? Which factors do you think play a role on their decision while preferring a Turkish supplier? As Innova Bedding, we do not depend on a specific region or country. The companies we distribute are located in Italy and we sell our products to North Africa, Middle East and Caucasus countries. Turkey is geographically located in a very important point. It is a country capable of utilizing both her geographical position and raw material resources, and should therefore focus on increasing its export capacity. What kind of suggestions can you give to companies that want to expand their export network? First of all, I observe that we do not focus on exports as Turkish companies based on my own observations both in my company and in the companies that I worked for within the sector. We need to turn our aim abroad and search for new markets. We also need qualified colleagues in order to open markets abroad. We should focus on exports by educating people who can speak foreign languages and who can analyze foreign markets. We need to develop our marketing strategies. From a technical point of view, I recommend them that they strengthen themselves by cooperating with fully equipped enterprises.

Exporters have made an expedition to China

Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) continues its efforts to ensure that Turkish exporters get more share in the Chinese market. Within this scope, an organization has been initiated for national participation to China International Import Expo (CIIE), the world’s largest import expo, under the coordination of TİM. Having opened its doors to visitors on November 5, the expo is hosting 59 Turkish companies and 5 institutions promoting their products in various sectors ranging from food to cosmetics and from medical to textile, while participants are showing great interest to the shows and events held at the Turkish booth

area. TIM’s President İsmail Gülle uttered that their target is to have more shares as Turkish exporters from China’s import volume which is expected to raise to 10 trillion dollars in the next 5 years. Held by People’s Republic of China, “China International

Import Expo (CIIE)” has opened its doors in China’s Shanghai city. 59 companies and 5 institutions represent Turkey in the expo under the auspices of the Republic of Turkey, Ministry of Commerce and in coordination with Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM). While brands promote their products and find new

73

business opportunities in the expo, various inspiring activities such as tasting activities, music recitals, paper marbling and tile art are performed at Turkey country booth area for the promotion of the country. In the “Food and Agricultural Products” hall, on the other hand, food shows and tasting activities are organized under the name “Turkish Tastes”. Turkey Promotion Group (TTG) marks promotion of our exportable products with supportive events in the expo. Designing contents on China’s most reputable 100 websites, TTG aims to promote the products on the “Made in Turkey” wall in the expo area by featuring Chinese social media celebrities with high access power experiencing these products personally. The expo will continue until November 10 and is expected to attract more than 3,000 exhibitors and 450,000 visitors from more than 150 countries this year. “Our target is to get the share we deserve from 10-trillion dollar volume” Making evaluations regarding the expo, TİM’s President İsmail Gülle stated that they work to ensure that Turkish exporters get the share they deserve from China’s import volume, which is expected to reach 10 trillion dollars in the next 5 years. Reminding that they participated in the expo last year for the first time with 38 companies, İsmail Gülle said, “The number of companies attending the expo from our country is increasing every year. The cooperation agreements made in 2018 equaled to around 620 million dollars. We expect greater interest and a higher number of trade agreements this year. The sluggish

demand in the EU market makes Far East countries and especially China far more attractive. We see this also in our monthly export figures. Our 10-month export figures in 2019 confirm that we are now directed towards the demand in the Far East market. For instance, exports to the Far East have a significant contribution to the 18% increase in exports of our chemicals sector. In order for other sectors to respond to the increasing demands in the region, we, as TİM, have increased our activities in this region as well. Noting that they are focused on bringing balance to our mutual trade with China, İsmail Gülle made the following statement: “In this sense, the concrete steps we will take are sizeable

enough to have a significant share in the increase of our exports. We are currently exporting raw materials such as mines, metals and sulfur in highest amounts. Therefore, we continue to support our exporters to take part in many expos and organizations such as the one that we attend today in order to direct our value-added products to this market and promote the quality of Turkish export products well in this region. This comprehensive import expo offers remarkable opportunities for our companies. As the integration of Eurasia to the world within the framework of the Belt – Route initiative will bring with it large scale projects and new trade opportunities, it is invaluable to build stronger relations between China and Turkey in the sense that mutual

74

trade leaves permanent impact. National participation to such export – import expos will lead the way for taking larger steps with China based on the win – win formula within the framework of Turkey’s multifaceted foreign policy.” “We have full faith that we will come back from China with prosperous cooperation agreements” Istanbul Chemicals and Chemical Products Exporters Association (İKMİB) Chairman of the Executive Board Adil Pelister, on the other hand, said, “As İKMİB, we organized the national participation organization of Turkish companies in China International Import Expo for the second time this year. If may I say so, we have made an expedition to Chi-

na with 59 leading companies in the fields of construction, food, electronics and cosmetics. In addition to the 136-suare meter country booth area for Turkey, our companies from various sectors exhibit their products in an area of 1496 square meters and our products attract great attention. We are performing an effective work to show the achievements of Turkish exporters to the Chinese market. The most important part of the expo for us is to represent and promote our country successfully.” Pelister continued as follows: “We are confident that we will come back from China International Import Expo, where we made important collaborations last year, with good news this year as well. With China Interna-

tional Import Expo, the private sector, public institutions and manufacturers in China have the opportunity to come together. While we import to China with an amount equaling to 21 billion dollars, we export around 3 billion dollars. We believe that we will close this gap with the contribution of our collaborations at the expo.”

77

finished bed covers, our other sleeping products such as pique and bed linen attracted attention in the fair.” Evaluating the state of the mattress industry in 2019, Karisman said, “2019 is a fast year for us. We started to invest in bed and sleep products in our factory which we established two years ago in Bursa. This is our second fair experience and we expect positive feedback from our customers.” Stating that South America preferred Turkish products in the bedding sector, Karisman said that the R&D activities were continuing with market researches and that they produced 100% waterproof alezes which are not new in the market but are sought after in countries which have the highest security standards such as England.

Ergin stressed that strips must carry the ISO 9001/2015 quality certificate. “Domestic production and export are important for our economy” Tamer Ergin, said: “We produce mattress strips to be used on the rounded edges of elastic bands and mattresses, which are the main items in the furniture sector but are not visible to the final consumer. In Turkey, we are one of the two companies that manufacture knitted strips for mattresses.” Ergin said that 2019 was a year of economic problems in general. “Our priority in this case is the satisfaction and permanence

of our existing customers,” he added. Stating that domestic production and export is important, Ergin said, ’We export 40% of our products. Our strips have a tenyear warranty and the required quality certificates. We export to Brazil, Chile, USA, UK, Germany, Italy, France and Balkan countries. Opportunities in recycling and smart packaging 84

Accounting for 40% of the Turkish plastics industry and 70% of its exports, packaging plays a large part in guiding plastics out of the turbulent waters of additional taxation and bans. Developments in the packaging industry impact everyone from manufacturer to feedstock supplier, machine operator and distributor, yet each threat gives

rise to a new opportunity. At this year’s International Plastic Packaging Congress, PAGEV enabled the discussion of current threats and opportunities in the industry. The Congress began with introductory remarks by PAGEV Chair Yavuz EroÄ&#x;lu and continued with the leading names in the industry. The Turkish Plastics Founda-

85

tion (PAGEV) held its sixth “International Plastic Packaging Congress” on October 22, 2019 at the Istanbul Swissotel the Bosphorus. Subject matter experts, industry representatives and academics convened around the theme of “Current Threats and Opportunities in Plastic Packaging”. Additional taxes and bans appear to be the greatest threats to the industry, giving rise to opportunities such as sustainability, recycling, and smart packaging. The anti-plastic winds that sweep Europe are being felt in Turkey too. European Commission Policy Officer Werner Bosmans gave firsthand information about plastics being a hot discussion topic in Europe. The 6th PAGEV International Plastic Packaging Congress featured distinguished speakers such as EuPC Managing Director Alexander Dangis, PlasticsEurope Regional Director Giuseppe Riva and INEOS Styrolution Director of Global Strategy Johannes Musseleck, who joined PAGEV Chair Yavuz Eroğlu in a panel discussion on “Circular Economy and Zero Waste”. Another keynote speaker was Yoav Hoshen, Co-Founder and Senior Vice President of Water. io, known for creating IoT Smart Packaging as one of the best applications of digital packaging in the world. Smart packaging offers many solutions that make people’s lives easier through mobile applications and the internet. Water.IO’s reusable water bottles are equipped with smart caps that let you track how much water you need to drink for the rest of the day on your phone. The smart cap also reminds you to take a drink of water. Yoav Hoshen gave

examples to how packaging was becoming smarter, and provided a glimpse into what we might expect in the future. The plastics industry will grow with sustainable products In the introductory remarks to the Congress, PAGEV Chair Yavuz Eroğlu said, “The plastics industry of Turkey is a great contributor to the national economy with 35 billion dollars in revenue and 12 billion dollars in exports. One of the largest subsectors in the industry is packaging, which accounts for 40% of production and 70% of exports. Looking into figures, we see that 3.6 million tons of plastics worth 12 billion dollars were produced in 2018. In the first half of 2019, plastic packaging production declined by 14% by weight

compared to the same period previous year to 1.7 million tons, and 21% by value to 5.4 billion dollars. According to our forecasts, production volume will drop by 7% to 3.4 million tons, and production value will decrease by 13% to 10.5 billion US dollars by the end of the year. The export growth of the industry is also slumping. Last year, we exported 2.6 billion dollars of plastic packaging. In the first half of this year, no increase was recorded in comparison to the same period in 2018. The industry’s exports for the first 6 months stagnated at 1.3 billion dollars. Of course, we believe this to be temporary. Plastic is an indispensable material. This will ensure that the plastics industry and the plastic packaging sector will continue to grow. As we always say,

plastics have no place in nature, but plenty of place in our lives. The industry will develop with new alternatives. Instead of the one-way street of make-sell-consume-dispose, we are transitioning to a circular approach of make-sell-consume-recycle-remake. The plastics industry is gearing for this revolutionary new approach. Plastic packaging will prevent food waste, contribute to the national economy, and achieve impressive growth. The Zero Waste Project in particular will be a boost to the recycling industry in Turkey. The plastics industry will succeed in environmental protection and economic development at once with sustainable products. We will keep growing while we keep a watchful eye over the environment.”

SY Etiket: “We care about customers’ opinions in production” Established in Denizli at the beginning of 2019, SY Etiket, which manufactures labels based on the opinions and suggestions of customers and produces the labels that are used in the last stage of mattress production, offers its products to both domestic and foreign markets. “We prepared for Sleep Well Expo with our experiences from previous years” The company, which had previously attended Sleep Well Expo under the name of another company, took the name SY

Etiket. The General Manager of the company, Yetkin Ekinci, said: “As SY Etiket, we produce labels which are used in the last stage of mattress production. We consider the opinions and suggestions of our customers in all stages of production. We have been attending Sleep Well Expo for six years. We have completed the preparation of the fair by getting ready our product samples that will be distributed the participating companies in the fair.”

General Manager Yetkin Ekinci, comments on the year 2019, “Sy Etiket name has been used since

January 2, 2019. The year 2019 has been troubled in general due to the economic fluctuations in both the domestic and foreign markets.” He pointed out that exports are the most basic item for the companies to continue their commercial life and stated that they had a positive year, because they exported 80% of their production. Ekinci said, “We have great expectations from 2020. We are improving our machinery park. Thus, we aim to increase our product range and make our customer portfolio permanent.”

New destination for export: South America

Mr. Beytullah Uslu, one of the founding partners and the General Manager of the Fullimex Foreign Trade Co. Inc., which is one of the companies that make a name for itself in the South American market and plays an active role in the presentation of Turkish origin products from different sectors in this market, shared the details of his experiences in the South American market. South American market is not impossible to enter

Beytullah Uslu emphasized that contrary to popular belief, entering to the South American market for Turkish companies is not an impossible target, and said that Turkish origin products were more competitive than many European countries in terms of both quality and price and that they could get their shares in Central and South America very easily. Stating that all Central and South American countries have active customer portfolios in various product categories, Uslu

said, “We are a foreign trade company that exports various products of various industries, but I want to mention first that selling products to South America is easier than selling products to any African country. Because the South American countries are always one step ahead in terms of payments and the problems that may occur in shipment and transportation. To give an example, you are a steel producing company and want to export to African country. The biggest problem in many

89

African countries is collecting payment. If the customer pays you in advance, of course there is no problem, but it is a great risk if you are paying by Letter of Credit (LC) or working with you on credit. It is possible that there will be several problems such as the retention of the product you sell in some African countries, the non-payment of the deliveries and the cancellation of the letters of credit for the products shipped. Besides, most of the banks in many African countries do not have any agreement with the banks in our country. Pay attention to the payment problems while exporting to African countries. We usually accept only prepaid orders in these markets. Thus, we minimize our risk.” South American countries offer payment guarantee Stressing that some banks in South American countries have direct agreements with some banks in Turkey, Uslu said, “The payment problems we mentioned for African countries are almost negligible in South American countries, contrary to what is believed. Some insurance companies guarantee payment to many companies in South American countries. For example, you sold your product, but the customer wants to pay you later on. As manufacturers, you can ask about the details to the insurance companies that give you a guarantee of payment and you can have detailed intelligence about that customer’s businesses or their credibility. According to the credibility of the customer you sell the products, these insurance

companies can

guarantee your payment when you face any payment difficulties.” Delivering products to customers Uslu stated that because of the imports made from South American countries to our country, the cost of the transportation are getting cheaper. After these containers are emptied, they are either kept in the port or returned empty. This significantly reduces container transportation fees.

For example, Buenos Aires is the largest port in Argentina for container deliveries. The cost of transporting products from our country to many ports in the UK is almost the same. So, the cost you should pay while sending the product to the UK or Argentina will almost be the same. This will allow you to be competitive in shipping costs in many countries in South America.” Language barrier: A disadvantage of selling products to South America Expressing that the problems encountered in South American countries was the language problem at the beginning, Uslu continued as follows: “The advantages of selling products to South American or Central American countries are many, but the biggest disadvantage is the language problem. The main language used in these countries is Spanish. Apart from the other small countries, the only country where Portuguese is spoken is Brazil. Due to the neighboring countries, Spanish is also spoken frequently in this country. You produced a product and you want it to sell them in these markets. In order to achieve this, you have to know the culture of the country and the language of the country to be successful in your marketing efforts.”

ADIVA Sprl launches crowdfunding campaign for a device that rocks adults to sleep

ADIVA ONE is a sleep and relaxation platform that induces sleep, and produces a calming effect on its occupants

BRUSSELS (PRWEB) – ADIVA Sprl launched a crowdfunding campaign for ADIVA ONE, a sleep and relaxation platform. Central to the technology’s design are modular supporting legs which can be easily attached to a standard bed frame to apply a slow, oscillatory motion. It is available on the Indiegogo platform for $1,499 USD. “Based on worldwide statistical data, the average sleep time nowadays is 6.8 hours,” said founder Adrian Fratila. “Lack of sleep negatively affects quality

of life, leading to poor performance, mental health issues and depression. And, although these facts are common knowledge, changing sleep habits is hard, particularly due to modern life pressures.” Research suggests that a slow oscillatory motion applied to a bed induces sleep, and produces a calming effect on its occupants. Rocking not only facilitates sleep onset but has a persistent effect on brain oscillations and spindles, which is a hallmark of deep sleep.

91

ADIVA ONE proposes to improve the quality of sleep by facilitating the sleep onset through motion oscillation in a range of 4cm, and enhancing the sleep depth, ultimately making the most out of the limited number of hours that people sleep. “The benefits of ADIVA ONE could be immense,” said Operations Director Irina Dragoman. “Rocking is known to boost deep sleep and sleep maintenance, implicitly reducing the risk for type two diabetes, mental health conditions such as depression, or heart diseases and stroke. Good sleep improves physical and mental performance and memory improvement. Not to mention rocking can help ease the stress and anxiety brought on by our high pressure, high-tech lives.” ADIVA’s proprietary tech features whisper quiet 20dBA actuators and four modular supporting bed

Rocking not only facilitates sleep onset but has a persistent effect on brain oscillations and spindles, which is a hallmark of deep sleep.” legs that can be attached to almost any existing bed with no specialist expertise required for assembling. A control unit synchronizes the legs motion and communicates to the internet.

Users have the option to control ADIVA by remote control, smartphone app for advanced control and sleep history visualization, or Alexa voice control. Two built-in motion sensors clip to the bed mattress for integrated sleep monitoring. The control system monitors and analyses the user sleep cycles, automatically adjusting the bed oscillation speed and intensity in order to keep the user in a state of deep sleep. ADIVA One has robust stainless-steel design to support a bed including the occupants weighing up to 2200 lbs (1000kg). Users can expect low power consumption between 20W for a single bed and 50W for a very large Californian bed. All data is securely encrypted in the control unit. The estimated delivery date of ADIVA ONE is March 2020.

BASF develops the world’s first particle foam based on polyethersulfone The foam is characterized by its unique combination of properties: high temperature resistance, inherent flame retardancy, and its extreme lightweight coupled with great stiffness and strength. BASF has outstanding expertise in foams that are successfully used in numerous industries. After two years of intensive research, BASF is now able to present prototypes of the world’s first particle foam based on polyethersulfone (PESU). The foam is characterized by its unique combination of properties: high temperature resistance, inherent flame retardancy, and its extreme light weight coupled with great stiffness and strength. It is therefore particularly well-suited for complex-shaped components in cars, airplanes and trains, which require excellent mechanical properties together with the ability to withstand high operating temperatures or to meet stringent flame-retardant requirements. The expandable PESU granulate is pre-foamed into beads with low densities between 40 and 120 g/L and can be processed into molded parts with complex 3D geometries

using technologies available on the market. Ultrason E, the PESU of BASF, is an amorphous thermoplastic with an extraordinary temperature profile: it has a high glass transition temperature of 225°C and remains dimensionally stable up to this temperature. Its excellent mechanical and dielectric properties are only slightly dependent on the temperature, too. Foams made of Ultrason E are approved for use in aircraft. The material, with its exceptionally high limiting oxygen index of 38 (according to ASTM D 2863), distinguishes itself because it meets

the requirements for commercial aircraft with regard to combustibility, low heat release and low smoke density (fire, smoke, toxicity) even without the addition of flame retardants, which means it is intrinsically flame retardant.

Particle foam for new lightweight components Despite its low density the PESU particle foam enables extremely stiff and strong components with

95

excellent dimensional stability at high temperatures. Expanded molded parts made from one single material offer numerous advantages compared to traditional honeycomb structures coated with phenolic resins: they offer considerable flexibility in terms of densities and shapes and therefore greater freedom in design. There are fewer processing steps and therefore lower system costs. Additional functional parts such as inserts and screw threads can be integrated in the complex geometries. And, last but not least, recycling of the parts can be easily carried out as the polymer is of one single origin. Thanks to such weight-optimized, thermoplastic foams for complex geometries it is possible to realize new lightweight components that, compared to traditional thermoplastic parts, have better properties and are an answer to trends such as e-mobility in automotive construction, the modernization of aircraft cabin interiors and increas-

ing flame-retardant requirements in public transport. Ultrason is the trade name for BASF’s product range of polyethersulfone (Ultrason E), polysulfone (Ultrason S) and polyphenylsulfone (Ultrason P). The high-performance material is used to manufacture lightweight components in the electronics, automotive and aerospace industries, but also in water-filtration membranes and in parts that come into contact with hot water and food. Because of their extraordinary property profile, the Ultrason brands can substitute thermosets, metals and ceramics.

BASF: extensive expertise in foams BASF has outstanding expertise in foams that are successfully used in numerous industries. In 1951, the company patented the first-ever particle foam: the classic white foam made from expandable polystyrene (EPS) – Styropor. Since then, it has set the standard for insulation and packaging applications and was further developed

into the high-performance Neopor for insulation materials in 1997. BASF was also a pioneer in block foam: since 1964, it has produced the insulation material Styrodur, the expanded polystyrene (XPS) for use in construction. Since then, the company has brought other high-performance foams onto the market: Basotect, a flexible, opencell foam made from the thermoset melamine resin for acoustic, transportation and cleaning applications, as well as Neopolen, a polypropylene foam (EPP) with high energy absorption and good resilience. The latest innovations are Infinergy, the world’s first expanded thermoplastic polyurethane (E-TPU), which has been causing a sensation in the sports shoes industry, and ecovio EA, a certified compostable, expandable particle foam with a high biobased ratio for transport packaging, which contributes to the circular economy.

Essence of sleep with Essentia “Perfecting the world’s only natural memory foam took love, science, testing and time. What Essentia achieved in doing was to take high quality natural and organic ingredients, turning them into a truly next generation, latex-based foam that sleeps cool, feels better, and reacts faster than any other foam you’ve ever experienced,” the brand’s officials explain. Essentia’s patented natural memory foam starts with Hevea

milk that is mixed with other essential natural and organic ingredients that once combined help to achieve the distinctive feel and properties found only in Essentia. Of utmost importance to Essentia was sourcing the right ingredients to make its organic mattresses and natural memory foam mattresses, but also being transparent with what ingredients are used. Here you will find a breakdown of the most used ingredients in Essentia’s mattresses:

99

Hevea Milk Milky white “sap” of the Rubber tree, collected much like Maple tree sap. The hevea milk used at Essentia is sourced from Indonesia, collected from rubber plantations where acceptable working conditions are maintained and there is no practice of child labor. This hevea milk is processed to make Essentia’s natural memory foam. GOLS Certified Organic Latex Essentia’s Lifestyle organic mattress collection features GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified organic latex. Dunlop Latex A rubbery foam made from Hevea Milk (rubber tree sap) which is known for its durability, support qualities, and purity. The company uses natural Dunlop latex foam, the finest natural latex foam available as the support core in many of its mattress models. Organic Essential Oils A natural and healthy alternative to man-made oils or petroleum. Grapefruit seed, coneflower essence and jasmine essence all help us achieve proper consistency in Essentia’s natural memory foam while providing soothing and rejuvenating properties to the body and spirit. Natural Plant Extracts As a substitution to harsh toxic chemicals used in conventional memory foam, plant extracts such as hydrolyzed corn help to achieve the proper consistency for Essentia’s natural memory foam.

100

GOTS Certified Organic Cotton Every Essentia mattress is covered in an organic cotton cover and the brand features only the best organic cotton sheets. Grown without chemicals, synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, organic cotton helps retain the health of our planet and its people by providing safe work environments for cotton field workers, eliminating the use of damaging synthetic pesticides ensuring soil fertility is maintained and improved. 25% of the world’s chemical pesticides are used to grow cotton when only 3% of the world’s farmland grows cotton. Choosing organic cotton makes a huge difference. How Essentia makes the best organic mattress Perfecting Essentia’s natural memory foam was just the beginning; the next step was taking it to production. To ensure a consistent product, a very specialized foaming machine was sourced. After months of re-engineering and modifications including adding a programmable control center, chiller system, robotic arm and injection mix head it was ready to start making mattresses. Essentia uses two different types of molds to make mattresses: Layer Mold Used to make a thick piece of our natural memory foam. Once baked and cured, it’s sliced into 1 inch, 2 inch, and 3-inch-thick layers to be used on mattresses. You’ll find these layers in all models but featured predominantly as comfort natural memory foam layer of our Classic 8 and Energie Opus models.

Essentia Patented Mold Technology The specialized foaming machine is mostly found working with the mold to develop its WholeBodyTM Recovery mattresses. The process is simple, a layer of natural Dunlop latex

and natural memory foam that was sliced from the layer mold are stacked into this mold. The arm of the foaming machine then pours Essentia’s high-density natural memory foam over the stack, covering the top and all sides… much like icing a cake.

101

The mold is then fully baked and the new mattress is ready to go into curing. As 1 of only 2 latex foaming companies in North America, Essentia not only has complete control over every ingredient and component used to make the healthiest mattress possible, the environmental benefits of foaming are significant. Instead of importing latex foam components, the company simply imports the rubber tree sap to make its natural memory foam. This takes close to 80% less space than importing finished latex foam. It also significantly cuts down on fuel consumption in transportation, which allows for better prices. Curing & Testing As much care is taken into crafting a new Essentia mattress as you would expect from any James Beard Award-winning baker. Essentia’s goal is to ensure that each mattress reflects what Essentia owners are meant to feel which is fully refreshed after a deep, restorative, truly therapeutic sleep experience on Essentia. To ensure that, there are 2 more steps before a new mattress begins its trek to you: Phase 1 - Curing Like all baked goods, Essentia products need some time to cool. When it comes to foam, the cell structure and consistency changes after a few hours, even after a few days. All products cure on racks for 7 days to ensure you always get the Essentia feel it is famous for. Phase 2 - Testing All Essentia mattresses undergo inspection and testing before being packed up and shipped to you. Including

ILD (indentation load deflection) testing which determines firmness, stiffness or load-bearing capacity. Made with Care When it comes to how Essentia memory foam mattresses are made, it’s not just a company, it is family. Health, safety, and happiness go hand in hand at Essentia. Everything gets test-

ed, from worker safety to the final product. No gloves or other forms of protective equipment are needed for its team in the factory given the nature of its natural products. VOC testing has been performed on both work environment in its factory and the final product. Essentia’s factory is both GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified.

Core benefits of the coir

Used in many industries coir is applied in mattress manufacturing as well. Development of coir sector grows in line with ever increasing application areas.

Coir is mainly used in manufacturing areas such as packaging, robe, rug, upholstery and mattress. To attain this fiber, it has to be processed. The process is realized by keeping coconut fruit in water to separate the fibers from the fruit easily. The coir is obtained from the fibers outer surface of coconut fruit by separating through seawater and it is used naturally without subjected to any chemical process. Coir is classified by three; brown fiber, white fiber and bristle coir. Having features as maintaining head and ejecting humidity coir fibers provide an ideal air circulation in beds thereby keeping sleepers body temperature on balance with a natural way which offers orthopedic sleep atmosphere. Never nesting mites for its special structure coconut fibers offer a healthy sleep and adds softness through its natural stuffing materials.

Major players of the industry are brands such as Dutch Plantin, Samarasinghe Brothers, SMS Exporters, Sai Cocopeat, Kumaran Coirs, Allwin Coir, Benlion Coir Industry, CoirGreen, Dynamic International, JIT Holdings, Rajesh Agencies, HortGrow and Xiamen Green Field.

Alternative finance system turkey needs, practiced for 25 years by turkish barter

The conference on “New Horizons in Alternative Finance: International Liquidity, Social Responsible Finance and Green Finance” held. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended and said, “We will bring our country where it deserves in alternative finance field.” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, pointed out that alternative finance solutions will bring a new breath to national economy and we have to develop our own financing mechanisms for further development. President Erdogan said he believes an interest-based system in the world of the future will be replaced by a new financial architecture, where participation in risk sharing is essential. Explaining that alternative finance is rapidly becoming widespread, adopted and gaining depth in the world, Erdogan said, “In the coming period, we will take more bold and determined steps in alternative finance field and bring our country to the place it deserves in the world.”

New Horizons in Alternative Finance Turkey’s economy, as in every area and its an integral part of the financial system should continuously go forward, President Erdogan stated and pointed out of the need for the development of their own models. “The models that proposed for us and in other countries like ours, en-

tered the serious predicament, even in their own countries. The financial system, whose main function in the economy is to bridge savings and real investments, has not been able to fulfill its duties with its current structure. Financial systems, which should contribute to the increase in production and welfare, have unfortunately dominated the world economy and threatened stability.” he said. Without considering social and human costs, the collapse of this economic system, which operates only with the ambition to earn more, is inevitable. The global economic and financial system needs to be transformed immediately and the construction of a structure that is human-oriented and where production is essential is necessary. Alternative finance is one of the most important elements of this trans-

formation. The reason for opposing the interest-based system is that our belief does not allow it, and the human burden of the system is also heavier.

Barter should be Priority in Interest-Free Finance and Trade Systems The alternative funding system which Turkey is looking for years, has been functioning successfully for over 25 years. Emphasizing that the Barter system is of great interest to companies from all sectors and is an alternative trade model for firms, Türk Barter Chairman Dr. Sirri Simsek, said in an interview he has given to Ekonomix Magazine, “Turk Barter, as a pioneer in the field and has a strong technological infrastructure aims to expand its coverage in the country. Actually, over one hundred

105

thousand companies use the Barter system worldwide. In addition to providing added value to economic life Türk Barter offers a risk-free economic solution that does not hinders production for all sectors, protects employment, strengthens capital, makes money a tool not an objective. In the common market called barter pool, Türk Barter allows member companies to trade and make profit without the need for money. In other words, the barter system is a financial system in which member companies can buy their needs and sell goods and services they produce. In short, the system is based on the companies receiving the goods and services they demand in exchange for the goods and services they produce without paying cash.” Interest-Free Finance and Trade

System: Turk Barter

Barter, as a payment tool may replace cash, albeit partially. It is a trade, financing and payment system that is not affected by speculations and takes its real value from production and service. Companies established in Turkey with limited capital are encountering difficulties in carrying on their activities under advers economic fluctuations. Bank loans, which are the classical method of financing, do not provide much benefit to companies due to high collateral and interest and do not meet their needs. The Barter System, which we call the alternative finance that Turk Barter has brought to the economy 25 years ago, provides great support to companies with a system that is both interest-free, flexible and where companies can pay their debts with their own goods and services they produced. All needs can be met with Barter Turk Barter operates on the basis of the Barter Joint Market it organized, the widest and the most comprehensive sectoral network in the world and keep growing by inviting

more companies becoming members to this efficient trade and finance network. The member company is able to meet all its needs from the pool of goods and services offered by the member companies in the Barter Common Market. To meet the needs of the member firm, expert brokers help companies according to their field of activity; It stores the stocks of the member, surplus supply, every product he wants to sell and demands the goods and services he needs from the system in return. In addition, every member can easily start the online sales process by adding every product they want to sell to the website within the scope of Barter.

es have difficulty in carrying the financial burden, with its “Alternative Trade and Financing Model” Turk Barter platform enables companies to buy-or-sell what they wanted to other member companies. With the Non-Interest Goods Loan offered to its members by Turk Barter, the companies may be able to meet its needs without using cash. Due to the recession in the market and the decline in demand, Turk Barter develops alternative payment opportunities by offering Barter Loans to enterprises in a period in which there is no opportunity to generate equity by selling and generating resources and the general expenses cannot be met from equity.

want to get rid of this bottleneck take shelter in bank loans in order to meet their needs. Although firms obtain cash in the short term, they lose cash in the long term and suffer losses due to the interest they paid. In these days when enterpris-

Turk Barter, which has become the security insurance for companies, provides a common platform for all its members on a reliable basis. Providing important opportunities for companies in this sense, Turk Barter continues to grow and expand the brands it cooperates with.

Mattress Industry Terms 106

Source: ISPA, International Sleep Products Association

Adjustable base: An electro-mechanical or manual bed frame construction that permits the raising and lowering of the head and/or foot portions of the mattress. Airbed: An air mattress with a core that is an air-filled vinyl bladder. Better airbeds are multichambered, covered with cushioning, upholstered with ticking and sold with a foundation. Anti-microbial fiber and foam: Treatment that inhibits the growth of microbial contaminates. Backing: Any fabric or sheeting ma-

terial that is used during quilting to anchor the stitches. Batting: See Cotton Felt. Bedding: Commonly used as a generic term for a mattress and foundation set, but may also apply to accessory items such as blankets, sheets, pillows, comforters, mattress pads, etc. Bedding ensemble: A complete sleep support system, consisting of a metal frame or a bed, a foundation and a mattress set. Bed frame: A metal or wood frame with legs used to support a

mattress and foundation. Conventional height is 7-1/4 inches and the low-profile version is 5-3/4 inches when measured from the floor to the bottom of the foundation. Generally a headboard can be attached. Metal frames are sometimes known as a “Hollywood frame. Bedsprings: Open-spring or wire fabric box springs without upholstery materials or cover. Binding tape: Fabric tape used to bind and close the mattress or foundation where the vertical and horizontal panels of outer ticking

107

come together, providing the edge trimming for the mattress or foundation. See Tape and Tape Edge. Body impressions: Indentations occurring on the surface of a mattress over time, due to the compression of materials by the human body. Bonnell: A knotted, round-top, hourglass-shaped steel wire coil. When laced together with crosswire helicals, these coils form the simplest innerspring unit, also referred to as a Bonnell. Border: The vertical side or edge of a mattress or foundation. Prebuilt borders are constructed by stitching together the ticking, foam or other filling materials and a backing material. Commonly quilted or vertical-stitched.

Box spring: Also referred to as a “foundation.” A base for an innerspring mattress, consisting of coils or other forms of springs mounted on a wood or metal frame and secured with a wire-interlaced or welded-wire grid, topped with upholstery and insulating materials (felt, urethane or other resilient materials), and covered on the top and sides with ticking and on the bottom with a dust cover. It is an important part of a bed set since it serves as a shock absorber, distributes weight, and supports and interacts with the innerspring mattress to properly support the body.

Border rod: A heavy gauge wire rod attached to the perimeter of the innerspring unit (top and bottom) by means of a helical wire or metal clips.

Box-top mattress: A mattress featuring a raised surface finishing treatment where a separate, sided and rectangular encasement of soft materials–usually with a tape edge–is attached via a welt to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery.

Boric acid: A chemical additive applied during the garnetting of cotton and/or other fibers to provide cigarette ignition resistance characteristics.

Bunk bed: A two-tiered wood or metal frame designed to accommodate two mattresses, typically twin-size, one above the other. Some models allow the upper and

lower units to be detached and used as separate beds. Bunkie: A mattress, usually twinsize, and platform base used on bunk beds. Cal 117: Refers to California Technical Bulletin 117, which specifies a vertical flame testing procedure for bedding and furniture component materials. Foam referred to as “Cal 117 foam” has passed this test. Carbon: The principal hardening element in steel. The higher the carbon content, the harder the metal and the more temper it will take, thus giving longer “memory.” Cellulose acetate pad: Woody fiber compacted into a pad and used as an insulator. May be glued or sandwiched between plastic netting to help hold it together. Coil count: The number of coils in an innerspring unit. Though the count can effect weight distribution, it is not the determining factor for firmness. The count is usually based on the number of coils in a full-size unit. Coils: The individual wire springs that form an innerspring unit. See

108

Hourglass, Continuous and Offset Coils. Coir pad: An insulator pad made from coconut husk fiber, garnetted, needled, bonded and pre-cut to size. Comfort system: Refers to the upholstery layers of the mattress, generally consisting of a combination of materials (cover, cushioning, topper pad, insulators, etc.). Conjugate polyester fiber: Spirally crimped fiber that is crimped chemically rather than thermally. Is very durable and resilient. Continuous coils: An innerspring configuration in which the rows of coils are formed from a single piece of wire. Conventional bedding products: Mattresses and foundations in the conventional adult sizes of twin, twin extra long, full, full extra long, queen and king. Convertible sofa: A sofa with a bed folded beneath the seating surface, generally consisting of a mattress resting on a metal mechanism. Also called “sleep sofa” or “sofa sleeper.” Convoluted foam: Better known as “egg-crate” foam that is specially cut to produce hills and valleys, giving gentle softness and more surface comfort. Foam surface treatment is available in multiple patterns. Cornell test: Devised by Cornell University School of Hotel/Motel Administration. Designed to test cosmetic performance of bedding sets, such as body impression or support firmness. Two round surfaces are pounded into the finished product 100,000 times and checked periodically for failure or changes. Corner guards: Molded plastic or

metal, (sometimes upholstered) fittings secured to foundation corners to prevent material damage from the bed frame.

Cotton pickers: “Fall out” from ginning or garnetting. These shorter staple cotton fibers are blended with linters to produce cotton felt.

Cotton felt: Produced by a garnett machine which combs cotton and other fiber binders into a continuous web or layer. Several such layers combined are called cotton “batt”. For compressed cotton felt, thick layers of garnetted cotton fiber are mechanically compressed to reduce body impressions.

Crown: A convex surface on a mattress. Mattresses with a half-inch crown are a half-inch thicker at the center than at the edges.

Cotton linters: The short fibers adhering to the seed after the long staple fiber has been removed in the ginning process. Used in making cotton felt.

Cushioning: Materials that lie above the insulator and below the fabric covering in an innerspring mattress. These materials are typically combinations of polyurethane foam, cotton felt, and/or mademade fibers. Damask: Woven ticking produced on a loom that has yarns running at 90-degree angles to each other,

the warp and the weft. The damask design is woven into the fabric rather than printed on the surface. Density: A measure of weight per cubic volume, usually expressed in pounds per cubic foot. Often referred to when discussing foam. Double tempering: Heating of wire components, usually in an oven, after they have been given shape or form and have been electronically stress-relieved. Refers to tempering coils as well as border rods and helicals in a complete spring unit. Dual-purpose: A broad term used to include all sleep pieces, which can be converted to other uses, including: convertible sofas, high-risers, daybeds, futons, etc. See Convertible Sofa. Dust cover: A woven or non-woven fabric attached to the underside of a foundation to prevent the collection of dust inside. May also be known as “sheeting” or “cambric.”

Edge guard: Generally an extra component added to the edge of a mattress and/or box spring to give support on the sides. Engineered edge support: A special design where the coils on the outer edge of an innerspring unit are actually positioned under the border rod. Most units have the coils recessed from the edge, which can contribute to a “roll out of bed” feeling. Euro-top mattress: A mattress featuring a raised, squared-off surface finishing treatment filled with soft comfort layers and attached to the mattress upholstery at the tapeedge. Fabric cover: Cloth or textile material woven, knitted or felted of any fiber or mixture of fibers. Often referred to as “ticking” or mattress fabric. Fales pad: Compressed cotton felt that is stitched together to better retain compression.

Fiber pad: Usually refers to manmade or natural fibers (wool, silk, etc.) that are garnetted, needled, carded and/or bonded together. Often used in quilting panels for mattress tops. Filler cloth: Refers to a plain fabric used on the top of a foundation instead of ticking. Commonly offers non-skid characteristics. Flanging: The process whereby a strip of fabric is sewn to the edge of the mattress cover and, in the assembly process, secured to the perimeter of the innerspring unit to prevent the cover and filling materials from shifting. Foam foundation: Consists of a built-up wood slat frame covered with a sheet of cardboard or similar material, topped with at least 2” of foam and covered with ticking. Foundation: Any base or support for a mattress, sometimes used as a generic term for box spring. A foundation may be made entirely

its name from its similarity to the metal ring in a hog’s nose. Hourglass coils: Coils that taper inward from top to middle and outward from middle to bottom, thus resembling an hourglass in shape. Employed in bonnell and offset coil designs. Hybrid: Commonly used industry term for a mattress that combines an innerspring unit with specialty foams such as visco-elastic or latex. of wood or a combination of wood and steel or steel springs. See Box Spring and Foam Foundation.

sion much like a hammock. Terms “dish” and “sagging” also used to describe this phenomenon.

Futon: A Japanese-style mattress construction, consisting of a cover and filling material, which is typically cotton but can be innerspring and/or foam.

Hand: Term used to describe the touch or feel of fabrics (e.g., soft, smooth, etc.).

Garnetting: A mechanical process whereby short cotton fibers and/ or other fibers are combed into a specific orientation and formed into a thin web, which are then layered to create a batting used as an upholstery material. See Cotton Felt. Gauge, coil: A measurement of the diameter of the steel wire used in coil construction. Wire gauge for innerspring coils range from 12.5 to 17. The higher the gauge, the thinner the wire. Gel foam: Generally a visco-elastic foam that is infused with beads or swirls of gel during the foam pouring process. Hair pads: Horse tail or mane, cattle tail or hog hair, which has been processed and curled for use as a mattress or upholstery filler. Hammocking: An undesirable characteristic sometimes associated with worn out or low-end mattresses. When weight is placed in the center, the corners tend to rise and bow in response to deep compres-

Hand-tied: The process of hand-lacing the coils in a box spring together with twine. Seldom used, this process has been replaced with modern technology and new designs. Headboard: An upright unit of wood, metal, plastic, or upholstered material, to be attached at the head of a bed, usually with the bed frame. Helical: A tightly-coiled, elongated wire used in the manufacture of innerspring units to join individual coils to each other and to the border rod. High-contour mattress: Measures 9” – 13” thick. A mattress under 9” thick is considered “standard”; over 13” thick is considered “custom.” High riser: Usually a frame or sofa with two mattresses of equal size without a backrest. The frame slides out with the lower bed and rises to form a full bed or two single beds. Hog ring: Metal ring used to secure the insulator and flange material to the innerspring unit. Takes

Ideal weight distribution: Equalization of support in such a way as to eliminate pressure points that cause discomfort resulting in tossing and turning. Best achieved with coil on coil construction and properly designed insulation and cushioning material. Innerspring unit construction (for mattresses): The spring construction used as the main support system inside an innerspring mattress. Some common types are: pocketed (see Marshall) and all metal (i.e., bonnell, offset and continuous wire). Insulator: Any material used on top and bottom of an innerspring unit to prevent the upholstery layers from cupping down into the coils. Some common types are: a fiber pad, non-woven fabric, netting, wire mesh or foam pad. Knit: A basic polyester or nylon ticking fabric produced through a knitting process (tricot) rather than weaving. Designs are printed onto the surface. Lacing wire: Finer gauges of wire used to form helicals. Latex: A flexible foam created from a water dispersion of rubber, either from the rubber tree (natural latex) or a man-made, petroleum-based product (synthetic latex). Most latex used in mattresses today is

111

a combination of natural and synthetic latex rubber. LFK: An unknotted offset coil with a cylindrical or columnar shape. Link fabric: A wire foundation for bedsprings, cots, studio couches, sofabed mechanisms and gliders. So called because the fabric is a succession of metal links. Marshall: A type of innerspring construction in which thin gauge, barrel-shaped, knotless coils are encased in fabric pockets. Also known as “pocketed coils.” Mattress: A manufactured product to sleep on, consisting of various resilient materials covered with an outer ticking. Comes from the Arabic term “matrah” meaning to throw down. Early Arabs traveled with their bedding and threw it down on the ground or floor at night. Mesh: Plastic netting generally stretched across the face of an innerspring unit as an insulator. Microcoils: A low-profile metal spring unit, typically with individually wrapped coils, used in the top comfort layers of a mattress. Molded foam core (for mattresses): A core made of flexible foam is made in molds and used as the main support system in a foam mattress. Mounting: Attachment of a box spring unit to a wood or metal frame. Needlepunched fabric: A manufacturing process for which high strength, lightweight, non-woven construction fabrics are produced. These fabrics are produced by garnetting fibers, entangling or

inner-locking these fibers together by a series of needles and then mechanically bonding or fusing them together via heat to produce a fabric without glue or binders. Needlepunched pad: A manufacturing process used to produce insulator pads and non-woven fabrics whereby loose, garnetted fibers are inner-locked by a series of “needles.” This process usually requires additional bonding to keep the fibers in place. Offset coils: An hourglass type coil on which portions of the top and bottom convolutions have been

flattened. In assembling the innerspring unit, these flat segments of wire are hinged together with helicals. Orthopedic: Generalized term to imply set gives proper postural alignment and support. Should not necessarily mean hard or board feeling. Proper support with a degree of comfort to contour to the body is best. Panel: The part of the ticking that constitutes the top sleep surface of a mattress, as well as the bottom of a mattress on a two-sided bed.

Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads. The tag is available in a hangtag or permanent label.

Pedestal-type metal or wood bed frame: A low-profile bed frame with a solid pedestal base underneath each side of the frame, instead of legs.

Smooth top: A plain surfaced mattress, neither tufted nor quilted. Also called button-free.

Pillow-top mattress: A mattress featuring a surface finishing treatment where a separate encasement of soft materials is attached to the entire surface on top of existing cover and upholstery.

Spring wire: Wire made from high carbon steel, characterized by toughness, strength and ductility. Typically furnished in 8 to 18 gauge for bedding industry applications.

Plus 4 edge: Two border rods engineered with one inside of the other and designed so that they make the edge 4% firmer than the balance of the sleep surface to eliminate that “roll out of bed” feeling and edge sag.

Steel unit construction (for box springs): The spring construction used as the main support system inside a box spring. Stitch bonded pad: See Fales Pad.

Pocketed coil: See Marshall. Polyurethane foam: See Urethane Foam. Print: A ticking fabric, which can be a woven or non-woven sheeting, commonly of synthetic fiber composition, on which a design has been printed. Quilting: The surface treatment in which the cover, foam and/or other fibers are sewn together, using various stitch patterns on quilting machinery, including scroll or panel quilters (single needle) and multi-needle quilters. Resilience: Surface liveliness and spring-back ability. Rollator test: An approximately 230 lb., six-sided roller is passed across a sleep set to determine the structural strengths or weaknesses of the set and components (i.e., foam or quilt failure, breaking of helicals and coils). The industry standard to duplicate the life of a mattress is 100,000 passes. Rollaway bed/cot: A portable metal bed/cot with a frame that folds in half with the mattress when not

in use so it can be rolled away into a closet (or elsewhere) for compact storage. Sheeting: a woven or non-woven fabric other than knits that have a degree of sizing and are somewhat stiff. Side rail: A metal or wood rail, which hooks into the outside edges of a headboard and footboard to provide the support base for a foundation and mattress. Sisal: A product of the henequen plant formed into a pad and used as an insulator. Named after the. small port of Sisal in Yucatan. Slats: Narrow strips of wood used to support the coils in the box spring frame. Also used in a bedstead to support the box spring. Sleep Products Safety Council hangtag: Used voluntarily by bedding producers since 1987, the safety hangtag program provides critical consumer information about the safe use of sleep products. Manufacturers certify that they use the tag only on mattresses that meet the Federal Standard for the

Straightline deflection: Pertains to mattress innerspring construction and refers to the constant ratio between stress and strain, weight and movement. The benefit is that constant support is provided regardless of the weight applied. No bottoming out of soft spots. Basically it means that two people of unequal weight, sleeping on the same mattress, receive the same support. Stretch knit: A heavy-weight mattress ticking consisting of a top layer, bottom layer and filling material knitted together and intermittently stitched to keep the filling yarns stable. Super zoned box spring frame: A support, generally wood, attached longitudinally to the underside of a foundation for added support where the main body weight rests. Another important structural point is that the vertical slats are turned on edge for added strength. This is extremely important on queen sizes and for 4-poster beds where typically no center support is provided. Also known as a “center rail.” Tape: Fabric material that closes

113

over the rough-sewn edge where the top and bottom panels are joined to the border of a mattress or box spring. Tape edge: A specified type of sewing machine designed to stitch binding tape around the top and bottom edges of the mattress, joining the panels with the border and closing the mattress. Tempering: Heat treatment of wire to reduce brittleness. Accomplished by electric charge, oven heat or both. Also known as “stress relieved”. Ticking: Fabrics for covering mattresses and foundations. Common types include: stretch knits, woven damasks, knits and nonwovens. Torsion bars: A type of spring system used in box springs characterized by square-shaped wire forms. Trundle bed: A low bed that is rolled under a larger bed. In some constructions, the lower bed springs up to form a full bed or two single beds as in a high riser. Tufting: Consists of passing twine, cords or tape vertically through the mattress from top to bottom, knotting and securing the loops thus formed with tufts, buttons, or lacing. The purpose is to hold the mattress filling in place. Uniflex grid: A steel wire grid used to bridge the “mouth” of the coils on an innerspring unit to prevent “pocketing” of insulation down into the coil and to eliminate “coil feel.” Also helps to distribute the body weight of a person. Urethane foam: Synthetic (chemically foamed) flexible urethane used for mattress cores and as a cushioning material. As a core, it’s the main support system. Generic term covering both polyester and polyether foams.

Ventilator: Metal or plastic screens attached to the sides and sometimes the ends of mattresses to permit the passage of air. Unnecessary with normal high quality materials used today, except for hospital type mattresses with wetproof covers. Visco-elastic foam: Also known as “memory foam.” Slow recovery urethane foams that are temperature sensitive. They conform to the body and distribute pressure according to body heat and dynamics. Waterbed: A sleep system employing a water-filled vinyl bladder as its primary support system. Original models relied on rigid framing to contain the vinyl components and were known as a “hardside”. Newer styles consist of vinyl components (bladder and liner) typically encased in foam and made to look like a conventional mattress, usually paired with a regular upholstered foundation. Also called a “softside” waterbed. All versions are sometimes referred to as “flotation beds.” Welded grid top: Basic wire welded into a lattice to which box spring coils, formed wire or mod-

ules are fastened. Offers even weight distribution, yet allows some flex and give. Wood bed: A bed with a headboard and footboard made of wood, having side rails of wood or metal that support the foundation and mattress. Wood frame (for box springs): The wood frame in a box spring on which the spring construction is mounted. Woven stripe: A once ubiquitous woven ticking with colored stripes. The style was referred to as “ACA”, the traditional designation for the 8 oz. blue- and white-striped ticking that has mostly fallen out of favor and is seldom produced.
