TESTIMONIALS “Have you ever met an ISU alum who didn’t love their time in Ames? We have found great partners in the ISU Alumni Association! As we work to market the large number of quality job opportunities in the Ames/Story County posted through our job board WorkInAmes.com, the ISU Alumni Association staff has worked with us to match sponsorship opportunities to our goals and objectives. The staff has been responsive to our message, and our sponsorship activities are connecting us with ISU alumni across the country.” Brenda S. Dryer (‘87 Human Sciences) Director of Workforce Solutions
“Our business membership has given First National Bank the opportunity to connect with alumni and friends of ISU. As an organization, we are committed to building strong community partnerships, and the ISU Alumni Association does a great job of strengthening relationships between the University, businesses, and community members.” Nicole Rasmussen (’97 Marketing) First National Bank, Ames-Ankeny Business Member since 2010
“As a firm, we value lifelong and ‘life-wide’ learning - pursuing new knowledge, then wisely practicing the new insights gained from that knowledge throughout the length and breadth of life. Participating in and supporting OLLI over the years has been, and continues to be, an excellent way for us to fulfill those values as a firm, and to promote those same values in Ames and Story County. We truly believe that OLLI’s beneficial impact on our community is well worth any contribution of our time, energy, and money.” Steven J. Larson Clarity Asset Management, Inc.

Newsletter MAY–AUGUST 2020
When Our World Turned Upside Down Dear Retirees, Welcome to our first – and I hope ONLY! — newsletter we publish during this COVID-19 pandemic we’re experiencing with people all over the world. We are paying attention to ISU guidelines and what Iowa will be doing in the months ahead. At this time, the numbers of people in our state who have contacted COVID-19 and those who have died have not peaked and there are no good models of when that will happen. You can rest assured that we will use an abundance of caution, remaining on the safe side as we decide about fall programs and our great schedule of speakers. We will offer programs only if we know it is safe to do so. YOU, our members, are the reason we exist; we want you safe, first and foremost. If you have questions, feel free to contact me or the ISU Retirees office. Sometimes among the sadness and grief, I try to find a bit of humor. Our vocabulary has expanded with new terms or terms with new meanings: social distancing, masks, data models, PPE. How many of you know Dr. Fauci as if he were an old friend? I have to say, the new closing to our emails, “Stay well,” makes me feel cared for; words do matter. We have had to re-affirm our ability to stay in our homes, wash our hands, and for some, avoid boredom. We’ve been strong and we’ve been supported by people near and far, many we know, and some we will never know. We’ve also felt fear, sadness, anger, disappointment, anxiety, depression; I hope you have had someone to share both your good and “bad” feelings during this time.
All feelings are real and we do ourselves a favor if we can express them. For example, one day last week a friend sent me a great rendition of the hymn “It Is Well With My Soul.” As I listened to and watched the performers, tears began to flow. I realized I needed to cry. Sometimes a hug or kind word can help us find that good cry, and if you’re alone, as I am, music is a great “prompt.” A recent CNN Town Hall program on the coronavirus ended with a poem that touched my soul. I leave you with the following advice from Irish priest Fr. Richard Hendrick in a few lines from his poem, Lockdown*: Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now. Today breathe. …we are always encompassed by Love. Open the windows of your soul And though you may not be able to touch across the empty square, Sing. Stay well, Sedahlia

Thankful for all the contributions
I
n the April newsletter I wrote that I was missing all of your smiling faces and hearing your voices, but when classes began I was able to spend a lot of time with those of you taking the classes and members-only lectures that were offered online. At each class we were able to see each other before class because I opened the “room” 15 minutes before classes began. This gave us time to visit before class began and then again at break time. We were not able to have our end of the year celebration, but I want to thank all of you who volunteered in several different ways to make this a great program. On pages 4-5 you will be able to see a long list of names and how each person contributed to the success of the OLLI at ISU program. FYI – we ended the year with 883 members! Stay well, Jerilyn Logue OLLI at ISU Director

Since then, the celebration continues to entertain both young and old Iowa Staters, with traditional events, including a Homecoming Parade, the Cyclone Central tailgate, lawn displays, the Friday night Pep Rally, “Yell Like Hell” cheering competition, and mass campaniling. Several times throughout the past decade, the Student Alumni Association Leadership Council (SALC) has coordinated the efforts to feed hundreds of students, faculty and staff on Central campus. CARDINAL & GOLD GALA ABOUT What began in 2011 in Des Moines, Iowa, with almost 200 people now brings together over 700 Cyclone alumni and friends. These dedicated Cyclones collectively support ISU Alumni Association programming while networking and having fun! Because of the success in Des Moines, the ISU Alumni Association is excited to expand the program into the Greater Kansas City Area in 2022. In each city, a portion of proceeds goes toward local initiatives. There are many ways to get involved with the gala: attending events, sponsoring a table, participating in auctions and games, and pledging support during the paddle raise. ISU RETIREES ASSOCIATION ABOUT The Iowa State University Retirees Association (ISURA) was formed in 1975 to provide a link between the university and all retired faculty, staff, and their spouses. In 2006, the ISU Alumni Association began overseeing this program. The ISU Retirees Association is administered by a Board of Directors that meets monthly. There are no membership dues and all ISU retirees, their spouses/partners, living spouses/partners of deceased ISU retirees, and friends are invited to become actively involved in the activities and programs of the ISU Retirees Association. The ISURA’s board of directors is an official university committee whose members are appointed to represent each college, the University Library, Extension, the Merit staff, the Professional and Scientific staff, and the University Benefits Committee. A Faculty Senate representative and the Iowa State University Retirees Newsletter editor are also members of the committee.
