Dear Parents and Families, I hope that you enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing spring break with your family and friends. Members of grade 4 traveled far and wide in an effort to rest and relax before returning to school for the 4th and final quarter of the year. Upon arriving back at school, we jumped right back into our learning routines. Our new Unit of Inquiry is called “Old and New” and focuses on how we express ourselves. The Central Idea sparks excitement as we inquire into cultural rituals, traditions, artifacts, beliefs, and values. Throughout this unit, we will ask and answer questions about the similarities and differences between cultures, compare and contrast cultures and analyze cultural misconceptions from a global perspective. Students began their exploration of culture by investigating their own culture. Be sure to check out our individual cultural profiles in the elementary hallway the next time you are in the building. In Literacy, students are continuing to fine-tune their reading comprehension skills. Most recently, we’ve been studying cause and effect relationships found in both fiction and non-fiction text. Students have been exposed to a wide variety of literature and have identified a set of clue words that signal readers to think about cause and effect relationships. In Writing, students are experimenting with adding dialogue in an effort to deepen plot development and create more complex characters in stories. Nonfiction writing has been integrated into our Unit of Inquiry as students begin to write articles highlighting the similarities and differences of each culture in our unit. In Math, we are revisiting number and number properties. Our first unit of study this quarter focuses on fractions. We are learning to create equivalent fractions, compare, add and subtract fractions. In the coming weeks, we will explore the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages. One skill that we are still working on is “Math Talk” or being able to explain the procedure or steps necessary, justify the reasonableness of the response and describe the thought process used to solve problems. So as you can see, we’ve been very busy in Grade 4! Thank you for your continued help and support at home.

Kind regards, Ms. Kelly
