from € 839 Day 1 Arrival in Naples; accomodation at the hotel, dinner and overnight Day 2 Pompeii and Portici - In the morning we visit the excavations of Pompeii. The ancient Roman town of Pompeii is one of the most important archaeological evidence of European history. Pompeii was mostly de-

stroyed and buried under 4 to 6 meters of volcanic ash in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. For a long time no one thought of the lost city of Pompeii, until in the 18th century archaeological excavations discovered objects beneath the city that have been preserved for centuries and the town was brought to a new life. Then we go to Portici for the visit of the reggia, historical mansion built by King Charles of Bourbon as a royal palace for the dynasty of the Bourbons of Naples, before the construction of the more impressive Royal Palace of Caserta. The reggia is located in Portici, just outside Naples, inside a large park with an English garden and an amphitheater. B & B at the hotel Day 3 Royal Palace of Caserta and S. Leucio village Our first stop on this day is the Royal Palace of Caserta, dating back to the 18th century. Charles of Bourbon, King of Naples, commissioned architect Luigi Vanvitelli the construction of the Palace and of the park with cascades and sculptures, inspired by Versailles. This Royal Palace is one of the most impressive buildings throughout Italy: almost 250 m long, it has 5 floors and over 1200 rooms. The park is laid out around a 3 km long alley with water basins, fountains and cascades. In the afternoon we visit the Borgo ( village) di S. Leucio and the antique silk embroidery, which could boast the production of silk for the whole of Europe. Even today, one can find the silk from San Leucio in the Vatican, in the Quirinale Palace and in the President Room at the White House. The flags of the White House and Buckingham Palace are produced here. B & B at the hotel Day 4 Naples– ferrytoPalermo-Today we spend the day in Naples, a town which must be visited once in a lifetime. Shortly before boarding the ferry to Sicily, we enjoy a delicious dinner with Neapolitan specialties and of course the famous Pizza Napoletana. Overnight on board in a internal cabin. Day 5 Palermo and Monreale - In Palermo we will visit the historical center with the Palace of the Normans (which King Ferdinand partly transformed in neoclassical style), the beautiful Cappella Palatina and the Church of St. John of the Hermits. Then we head to Monreale for the visit of the impressive cathedral with its precious

mosaics and the amazing cloister. Half board at the hotel. Day 6 Village of Ficuzza, soft trekking, lunch at The Station; in the afternoon tasting of Duca di Salaparuta wines. Some 45 km from Palermo is the forest of Ficuzza, where King Ferdinand I of Bourbon built his hunting lodge. The lunch break for today is planned in an unusual location, at the restaurant Antica Stazione. The restaurant is located in the former railway station of Ficuzza and is set amid the green, where the railway line used to pass. Today it can be reached with a short walk (soft trekking) in the nature. In the afternoon we stop in a famous winery to taste the typical local wines. B & B at the hotel Day 7 Palermo - Parco della Favorita, the Palazzina Cinese, Mount Pellegrino and Villa Giulia. Today we visit the Palazzina Cinese, built for Queen Maria Carolina inside the Parco della Favorita, which is named like that as a memory of the royal residence in Campania. B & B at the hotel. Day 8 Departure

Abruzzo, the land of saffron

Tip

To get one kg of saffron one needs about 200.000 flowers. This numbers show how much passion is hidden behind the cultivation of this plant. In Italy the cultivation of saffron is almost only in the Abruzzo. It was during the Middleages that monks from Spain brought the plant to this part of the land. Than saffron was also called "goldpower" because of its high price and the colour. The cultivation of the seeds is still high quality so the best chefs all over the world ask for this saffron.

The city tour will take you to the elegant palaces of the 16th and 17th century, to Piazza Sant'Oronzo, designed and built by Venetians artists, to the Dome Square, where you will be in awe of the Dome, the Cathedral and the seminary. You can walk along the twisting cobbled paths that wind between a network of tiered houses down to the rock floor. Altamura is located in the Murgia area, rich in limestone, formed when the area was flooded thousands of years ago. Therefore it is made out of layers, deposited one by one. Limestone is very absorbent and will dissolve in water, which is why small cracks are widened by rain. Many of these caves have been used as churches and have frescos inside. memorable maze of winding alleys, where whitewashed simplicity sits side by side with baroque extravagance. The town is built on a hill in the green Valle d'Itria, the trulli area of Puglia, and it makes a good stop-over on a tour. Wine tasting in the area of Locorotondo including i.e. Primitivo and Negroamaro wines with typical Apulian Snacks (i.e. bruschette with local olive oil, salami, mozzarella cheese, grissini and so on). Day 7 The capital of Apulia and an important touristic destination and commercial harbor, Bari lies on a fertile coastal plain facing the Adriatic Sea. The second-most important church in Bari is the Cathedral, flanked by a tall bell tower and built on layers of previous ancient buildings. A finely decorated rose window and three portals give movement to the main façade. The interplay of volume and space, and the light seeping through the large openings and reflected off the stone walls, create an evocative atmosphere inside the church. Day 8 After breakfast, departure.

Tour Italia

Sicily and Malta two islands under the same sun This tour will take you to the southern islands of the Mediterranean sea, to discover their unique cultures. When you think of Italy, you probably think mostly of Roman ruins, but Sicily is a real melting pot of cultures. Over the centuries, the island was colonized by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Muslims, Normans before becoming part of Spain, then the Bourbon Kingdom, and finally part of Italy. You can still find all the traces that these conquerors left behind: Greeks and Romans ruins together with Byzantine and Arab art all at once! The Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Byzantines, all left their traces also on the Maltese Islands. Until 1530 Malta was actually an extension of Sicily: the conquerors who ruled over Sicily also governed the Maltese Islands till Charles V bequeathed Malta to the Knights, who took Malta through a new golden age. The history of Malta is a long and colourful one dating back to the dawn of civilisation, the remains of which are the mysterious temples dedicated to the goddess of fertility.
