...winter dreams Σε μια παλαιότερη συνέντευξη στο Capital A, ο σκηνοθέτης Κωνσταντίνος Γιάνναρης είχε εξομολογηθεί ότι του αρέσει το κέντρο της Αθήνας για έναν και μόνο λόγο: ∆ιότι στις γειτονιές του κέντρου γίνονται όλες οι πολιτισμικές ζυμώσεις, εκεί στεγάζονται όλα τα ανήσυχα πνεύματα, εκεί διαδραματίζονται οι πιο σημαντικές εικαστικές και καλλιτεχνικές δραστηριότητες και δημιουργίες της πρωτεύουσας.

In a previous interview in Capital A, the movie director Constantinos Yannaris had said that he liked the centre of Athens for one single reason, which is that in the city centre there is a great mix of cultures and ideas. It is here where all the radical spirits live and this is the area where the most important artistic and cultural events take place.

the municipalities neighbouring Athens, many festivals organised by the local authorities cause the situation to change a little. These municipal festivals are cultural highpoints that allow summer to spill over into the first few weeks of autumn. All the best productions and performances of the summer are shown in the municipal open-air theatres. We suggest attending the first festival of ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music), which takes place at the Melina Merkouri Theatre, in Vyronas, between 5 and 8 September. 50 first-rate musicians, sound designers, and cinema directors -among whom, you will find the founder and ECM producer Manfred Eicher- will present 8 major musical events. We also recommend that you don't miss two concerts by the composer Eleni Karaindrou, which take place at the Melina Merkouri Theatre, in Vyronas, on 12 and 13 September. They will be the world premieres of the music for the new film by Thodoros Angelopoulos The Dust of Time, starring Willem Defoe, along with her soundtrack for the acclaimed TV series 10. You should also try to catch the excellent productions by the Greek National Theatre and other touring companies that will perform at the different open-air theatres of the city. Theatre goers will be spoilt for choice amongst performances of Orestes, Blood Wedding, Birds, Helen, Medea, Electra, Frogs, Finisses, but also Blood Brothers, and plays by Moliere, Shakespeare, or Nikos Kazantzakis. In September, if you have the time and energy, you can frequent a different theatre or venue in a different neighbourhood of Attica every single night. It's only for this particular time of the year that the suburbs stop being the cultural backwaters of Athens. From October onwards, they go into hibernation and we will see you back in the city centre. C-A

Γιάννης Μόραλης η Μαργαρίτα Πουρνάρα εξερευνά τη ζωή και τη δημιουργική πορεία του κορυφαί- Ο Γιάννης Μόραλης είναι ο μεγαου Έλληνα καλλι- λύτερος εν ζωή Έλληνας ζωγράφος. Γεννημένος το 1916 στην τέχνη Άρτα, μεγαλωμένος στην Αθήνα, ευτύχησε να είναι δραστήριος και θαλερός στην ένατη δεκαετία της ζωής του. Κύτταρο γερό, που απολαμβάνει κάθε στιγμή της ζωής και πηγαίνει καθημερινά στο εργαστήριό του. Στην αναδρομική έκθεση που φιλοξενεί το Ίδρυμα Βασίλη και Ελίζας Γουλανδρή στην Άνδρο, αυτό το καλοκαίρι, το πιο πρόσφατο έργο του (Η περίσκεψη σε τόνους ροζ και μαύρου) ολοκληρώθηκε μόλις πέρυσι.

Margarita Pournara discovers the fascinating work and life of the acclaimed Greek artist annis Moralis, the greatest Greek artist alive today, is still active and productive in the ninth decade of his life. He was born in 1916 in Arta, in North West Greece and was brought up in Athens. He has a strong personality, continues to relish life and visits his studio daily. This summer, the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation on the Cycladic island of Andros hosts a restrospective of his work. It includes his most recent piece entitled Contemplation, which employs shades of pink and black.

ζωγράφος, που περνά τους καλοκαιρινούς μήνες στο σπίτι του στην Αίγινα, παρότι δε δίνει σχεδόν ποτέ συνεντεύξεις, δέχθηκε να πει δυο λόγια για τη ζωή και το έργο του. Το ατελιέ της εξοχής είναι άκρως τακτοποιημένο. Πινέλα, χρώματα, μολύβια, αποκόμματα από εφημερίδες σε ντοσιέ, μεταξοτυπίες κρεμασμένες στον τοίχο. Και μια πολυθρόνα μπροστά σε ένα καβαλέτο, όπου διαβάζει κάθε πρωί την εφημερίδα του. Η κουβέντα ξεκίνησε με την έκθεση της Άνδρου.

υγκινήθηκα που είδα ορισμένα παλιά μου έργα. Μου είχαν λείψει. Κάποια μου φάνηκαν καλά. Αυτό είναι κακό σημάδι για έναν ζωγράφο. Σημαίνει ότι δεν μπορεί πια να εξελιχθεί. Όταν έχεις ακόμα πράγματα να βγάλεις, είσαι πιο αυστηρός κριτής των πεπραγμένων σου. Παλιά δεν τα πουλούσα εύκολα τα έργα. ∆εν ήθελα να τα αποχωρίζομαι. Είχα όμως οικονομική στενότητα και δε γινόταν να μην πουλάω. Έτσι το πήρα απόφαση να ξεκόβω όταν έφευγαν από το εργαστήριό μου. Τώρα, αν ξέρω τον κάτοχο ενός πίνακά μου, ρωτάω καμιά φορά αν θέλει βερνίκωμα. Θέλω να μάθω πώς είναι η υγεία του". Ο Μόραλης είναι από τους σημαντικότερους εκπροσώπους της γενιάς του '30. Μαζί με τον Νικολάου, τον Τσαρούχη, τον Καπράλο ανακάλυψαν εκ νέου τη σημασία της λαϊκής τέχνης, της βυζαντινής και της μεταβυζαντινής καλλιτεχνικής κληρονομιάς. Ταυτόχρονα, όμως, αφουγκράστηκαν τις ανάγκες της εποχής τους για νέες επιταγές στην τέχνη. "Τότε με όλους αυτούς τους καλλιτέχνες ήμασταν ένα. Μια οικογένεια. Υπήρχε ντομπροσύνη. Τότε δεν είχε τόση σημασία για έναν δημιουργό να τον αναγνωρίσουν και να του πουν καλά λόγια. Σημασία είχε να πετύχει αυτό που είχε στο μυαλό του". ∆εν μπορεί κανείς να αποτιμήσει σωστά το έργο του Γιάννη Μόραλη αν δεν αναφερθεί στη σκηνογραφική του συνεισφορά, καθώς και στην πολυετή διδασκαλία του στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών. Ακόμα και σήμερα δεν αρνείται σε νέους καλλιτέχνες να δει τη δουλειά τους ενώ ήταν ο μόνος καθηγητής που πήγαινε ανελλιπώς σε όλες τις εκθέσεις των φοιτητών του. Σημαντικά είναι και τα εξώφυλλα των δίσκων αλλά και των ποιητικών συλλογών που έχει κάνει για τον Σεφέρη, τον Ελύτη, τον Χατζιδάκι, τον Θεοδωράκη κ.ά.:

Even today, he never refuses to view the work of new artists; in the past, he was the only professor who would always go to all the exhibitions by his students.

The artist spends his summers at his house on Aegina and doesn't often give interviews; however, this time he kindly agreed to speak about his life and work. The studio at his summer house is impressively organised. Brushes, paints, pencils, and newspaper cuttings are carefully tidied away.

"Η ποίηση δεν εικονογραφείται. Ξεκινάς από το συναίσθημα. Τι σου θυμίζει ένας στίχος; Τι σε κάνει να φαντάζεσαι; Ύστερα τα πράγματα έρχονται μόνα τους". Στα 92 του χρόνια σήμερα, ο Γιάννης Μόραλης διατηρεί αναλλοίωτο τον ενθουσιασμό του για τη ζωή. Τρώει όπως πάντα κάθε μεσημέρι στο εστιατόριο Φιλίππου στο Κολωνάκι και τα Σάββατα πίνει το καθιερωμένο του λευκό κρασί στην γκαλερί Ζουμπουλάκη, στην πλατεία Κολωνακίου. Κομψός, ευγενής, με λεπτό χιούμορ και κοφτερή ματιά, εξακολουθεί να παρατηρεί την ομορφιά των πραγμάτων. Η έκθεση στο Μουσείο Γουλανδρή θα διαρκέσει μέχρι και τα τέλη Σεπτεμβρίου. C-A

Silkscreen prints of his work hang on the wall and in front of an easel, there is the armchair where he reads his newspaper in the morning. The conversation begins with the retrospective on Andros. "I got really emotional when I saw some of my old works. I had missed them. Some looked really good. That's a bad sign for an artist. It means he can't develop any further. When you still have things to create, you're a stricter judge of what you've produced. In the past, I couldn't easily sell my works. I didn't want to part with them. I needed the money though and it was impossible not to sell them. I thus decided to completely cut myself off when they left my studio. If I know the owner of a painting, I might sometimes ask if it needs some varnish. I ask after its health". Yannis Moralis is one of the most important figures to have come out of the socalled 1930s generation. Together with Nikolaou,Tsarouchis, and Kapralos they rediscovered the importance of folk art, and the Byzantine and post-Byzantine artistic heritage. At the same time though, they sensed the needs of their era for new demands in art. "Back then, with all those artists you've just mentioned, we felt we were united, like one family. There was honesty. Back then, it wasn't that important for an artist to get recognised and to be lauded. What was important was to succeed with what he had in mind". Yannis Moralis's work cannot be properly appraised if his contribution to theatre set design is not mentioned along with his many years of teaching at the School of Fine Arts. Even today, he never refuses to view the work of new artists; in the past, he was the only professor who would always go to all the exhibitions by his students. He has also designed LP sleeves for composers Manos Hatzidakis and Mikis Theodorakis and the covers of poetry books for Yorgos Seferis and Odysseas Elytis. "Poetry is not illustrated with pictures. You start with the emotion conjured up by a line, by what it makes you imagine. After that, things happen on their own". Yannis Moralis is 92 and still retains his enthusiasm for life. He lunches at the same restaurant in Kolonaki and he always has a glass of white wine in the Zoumboulaki Gallery on Saturdays, again in Kolonaki square. Elegant, dignified, perceptive and extremely witty, he continues to observe the beauty of things. His retrospective at the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation will be on till the end of September. Ο ύπνος της λογικής γεννάει τέρατα The sleep of reason produces monsters Έναν από τους πολύτιμους θησαυρούς της αποκαλύπτει στους επισκέπτες της η Εθνική Πινακοθήκη: Τα 212 χαρακτικά διά χειρός Γκόγια (1746-1828) εκτίθενται για δημόσια προβολή υπό τον τίτλο Γκόγια, χαράκτης της Εθνικής Πινακοθήκης. Τα σπάνια χαρακτικά αγοράστηκαν το διάστημα 1961-1965 από τον Μαρίνο Καλλιγά, τότε διευθυντή της Εθνικής Πινακοθήκης (1949-1971). Two hundred and twelve works by the Spanish master Goya (1746-1828) are being exhibited under the title Goya, the Engraver of the Greek National Gallery. These rare items were purchased between 1961 and 1965 by the then curator of the Greek National Gallery, Marinos Kalligas (1949-1971).

dition. Bullfighting includes 33 aquatint prints which depict scenes from Spain's national sport. The series first circulated in 1816 and what is owned by the Greek National Gallery comes from the third edition of 1853. Disparates is one of the most famous series by Goya. It consists of 18 works created between 1815 and 1824. They show works of fantasy, dreams, terror and anguish which inspired Picasso and many other artists. The prints on display come from the second edition of 1864. The sleep of reason brings forth monsters is the title of the best known work from the Caprices series. It depicts the artist asleep whilst around him appear fearsome bats and birds of prey with huge talons. The works not only give us an insight into the nightmares faced by the artist himself, but also into the troubled times during which he lived. On top of that, the pieces clearly illustrate the creative process behind what are known as the Black Paintings, which paved the way for Picasso and for expressionism. The exhibition forms part of the events marking the 180th anniversary of the death of the Spanish master, with the Greek National Gallery fortunate enough to own this valuable treasure. Η αποκλειστική παραγωγή της Apeiron έχει σχεδιαστεί ώστε να παρουσιαστεί στον αίθριο χώρο του μουσείου, με σκοπό η περιήγηση να είναι εύκολη και διαδραστική ανάμεσα σε εικόνες και επιλεγμένα κείμενα. Τον Ιανουάριο του 2006, το Ίδρυμα Stanley Foundation ανέθεσε στο διεθνούς φήμης φωτογραφικό VII Photo Agency να αποτυπώσει και να αναδείξει με ακρίβεια το μοντέρνο πρόσωπο του αραβικού κόσμου. Οι φωτογράφοι που συμμετείχαν στο project κατέγραψαν την καθημερινή εμπειρία της ζωής στη Μέση Ανατολή. Κίνητρο και στόχος της συγκεκριμένης έκθεσης είναι τελικά η απομυθοποίηση και η αποδαιμονοποίηση της Ανατολής στα μάτια της ∆ύσης. Οι εικόνες της έκθεσης είναι ένα μικρό δείγμα της συνολικής δουλειάς που έγινε στις χώρες της Ανατολής. he exhibition Modern Arab World is a unique international effort which showcases the modern face of Arab society. It focuses on people's everyday life, their architecture, the media, the wider religious background, and the people's ideas about time. It is a multifaceted photographic exhibition sponsored by Apeiron Photos and hosted by the Benaki Museum in the courtyard of its Keramikos venue. There will be an interactive guided tour through the pictures and selected texts. In January 2006, Stanley Foundation commissioned the world famous VII Photo Agency with imprinting and showcasing as accurately as possible the modern Arab world and the everyday reality in the Middle East. Photographers documented the impact of the West on local communities, and everyday experiences from life in the Middle East. The exhibition aims to demystify the Arabic peoples and prevent the demonisation of the east in the eyes of the west. C-A

Το αniμasyroς είναι ένα διεθνές φεστιβάλ με σκοπό την προβολή και την ενημέρωση σχετικά με την τέχνη των ταινιών κινουμένων σχεδίων. ∆ιεξάγεται ετησίως στη Σύρο, την πρωτεύουσα των Κυκλάδων. Το φεστιβάλ είναι μια πρωτοβουλία που πραγματοποιείται σε συνδιοργάνωση με το Πνευματικό Κέντρο του ∆ήμου Ερμούπολης. Έχει σκοπό του την προβολή ελληνικών και ξένων ταινιών animation και επιδιώκει την εξοικείωση ενός ευρύτερου κοινού με τα ποιοτικά κινούμενα σχέδια. Παράλληλος σκοπός είναι επίσης και η αποκέντρωση της τέχνης και των καλλιτεχνικών εκδηλώσεων. Kατά τη διάρκεια των τριών ημερών του φεστιβάλ αniμasyroς, προβάλλονται ταινίες με ευρύ θεματικό και αισθητικό περιεχόμενο, από ποικίλα είδη και σχολές. The annual three-day event is sponsored by the municipality of Syros, the capital of the Cyclades. Greek and foreign films are screened in order to familiarise the wider public with good quality animation. The wide range of subjects and techniques featured will ensure that the public learns a great deal about the animators' art. Seminars and workshops will be held concerning the history of animation and the different techniques employed from the end of the 19th century to date. The presentations and seminars are made by both teachers of animation and by the creators of animated movies themselves. The festival takes place in Ermoupolis, on Syros, in the theatre Apollo on the 19, 20 and 21 September 2008.

The festival at the Municipality of Exombourgo, also on Tinos, will host a photographic exhibition by Eugenia Koumandarou, entitled Humble Paradise. The exhibition will be on till the 31st August and is held at the Ursulines' School in the town Loutra. The 70 black and white photographs were all taken on Tinos and show the less well-known areas of the central and eastern part of the island.

Το έργο του Κρις Γιανάκου, ενός διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένου καλλιτέχνη της ελληνικής διασποράς που ζει και εργάζεται στη Νέα Υόρκη, παρουσιάζει η Gallery Citronne στον Πόρο. Ο Γιανάκος από τη δεκαετία του 1960 έχει έντονη παρουσία στην αμερικανική αβάν-γκαρντ. Τα έργα του βρίσκονται στις συλλογές πολλών μουσείων ανά τον κόσμο. Η έκθεση στον Πόρο περιλαμβάνει γλυπτά από πέτρα, ξύλο και μέταλλο, μονοχρωματικούς πίνακες σε mylar και περγαμηνή, καθώς και κολάζ και τροποποιήσεις σε εκτυπώσεις και φωτογραφίες. Τα επιλεγέντα έργα είναι από τις τελευταίες τρεις δεκαετίες. Ο επισκέπτης μέσα από την παρουσίαση των έργων αντιλαμβάνεται την εννοιολογική εξέλιξη των ιδεών του καλλιτέχνη από τη δεκαετία του 1980 έως σήμερα. Chris Yanakos is a world-renowned Greek artist who lives and works in New York. Gallery Citronne,on Poros, will present his avant garde work which contains sculptures made of stone, wood and metal, paintings in mylar and parchment, as well as collages and photographs. The selected pieces have been created over the last 30 years and offer an insight into the development of the ideas expressed by the artist. Στον Εκθεσιακό Πολιτιστικό Χώρο της Alpha Bank στο Ναύπλιο παρουσιάζονται δύο εκθέσεις που διοργανώνονται από τα Τμήματα Συλλογής Έργων Τέχνης και Νομισματικής Συλλογής της τράπεζας υπό το γενικό τίτλο Μυθολογίας Αφήγηση. Η πρώτη έκθεση, Μυθολογικά θέματα στη ζωγραφική του Γεράσιμου Στέρη, παρουσιάζει το έργο ενός από τους σημαντικότερους Έλληνες ζωγράφους. Η ζωγραφική του Γεράσιμου Στέρη δημιούργησε ιδιαίτερη αίσθηση αλλά και αντιδράσεις όταν παρουσιάστηκε για πρώτη φορά σε έκθεση στην Αθήνα, το 1931, διχάζοντας τις γνώμες για το έργο του. Ο Στέρης δημιούργησε έργα όπου εικόνες από αρχέτυπους μύθους και σύμβολα μεταμορφώνονται σε συμβολικές συνθέσεις απίστευτης απλότητας και ομορφιάς. Στη συλλογή της Alpha Bank υπάρχουν 45 σχέδια του Στέρη από την περίοδο 1931-1936, τα οποία αποτελούν μιαν ενότητα που πραγματεύεται κυρίως το θέμα του μύθου. Τα σχέδια αυτά έγιναν ο πυρήνας της έκθεσης και παράλληλα αναζητήθηκαν σε διάφορες συλλογές οι πίνακες του ζωγράφου που αποτελούν την ολοκλήρωση των σχεδίων αυτών. Παρουσιάζονται, επίσης για πρώτη φορά, τεκμήρια από τη ζωή του ζωγράφου, τα οποία προέρχονται από το αρχείο της συζύγου του, Anne d' Este. Το Ίδρυμα Βασίλη και Ελίζας Γουλανδρή παρουσιάζει ένα εικαστικό αφιέρωμα στον διακεκριμένο ζωγράφο και δάσκαλο Γιάννη Μόραλη.Ηέκθεση περιλαμβάνει ελαιογραφίες, σχέδια και γλυπτά τα οποία έχουν επιλεγεί από τον ίδιο και προέρχονται από δημόσιες και ιδιωτικές συλλογές. Η δομή της έκθεσης προσφέρει στον επισκέπτη τη δυνατότητα της ανιχνευτικής αναδρομικής προσέγγισης, του εντυπωσιακού σε πλαστικότητα αλλά και εννοιολογική πυκνότητα έργου, το οποίο αναπτύχθηκε ανάμεσα σε ένα ιδιόμορφο μετεμπρεσιονιστικό ρεαλισμό -με έμφαση στην προσωπογραφία- και την αφαιρετική σχηματοποίηση, η οποία διέπεται από μια προϊούσα γεωμετρική λογική. Η έκθεση φιλοδοξεί να αποτελέσει την ευκαιρία μιας ανανεωμένης ανάγνωσης, που θα αναδεικνύει τις αρετές που αυτοδικαίως καθιέρωσαν τον Γιάννη Μόραλη ως

έναν από τους εν ζωή κλασικούς του αιώνα που πέρασε και του νέου που άρχισε. Το αφιέρωμα αποτελεί μια σύνθεση της καλλιτεχνικής δημιουργίας του Γιάννη Μόραλη, η οποία καλύπτει, όπως μας είναι γνωστό, μια μακρά περίοδο έντονης και περιεκτικής πληρότητας στο χώρο όχι μόνο της ελληνικής αλλά και της ευρύτερης εικονογραφικής ιστοριογραφίας. Επιμελητής της έκθεσης είναι ο Κυριάκος Κουτσομάλλης. Η έκθεση πραγματοποιείται με την πολύτιμη συνδρομή της Πέγκυς και της ∆άφνης Ζουμπουλάκη, καθώς επίσης και του Νίκου Παΐσιου, ο οποίος συνέλεξε και απομαγνητοφώνησε τις αφηγήσεις του ζωγράφου. Καθημερινά, στην αίθουσα προβολών του μουσείου, θα προβάλλεται ένα οπτικοακουστικό ντοκιμαντέρ, γυρισμένο ειδικά για την έκθεση. Καθ' όλη τη διάρκεια του Αυγούστου, θα πραγματοποιούνται καθημερινές ξεναγήσεις στα ελληνικά και τα αγγλικά καθώς και μουσειοπαιδαγωγικά προγράμματα για παιδιά ηλικίας 6-13 χρόνων.

The Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation presents a retrospective by the acclaimed painter Yannis Moralis. The exhibition includes oil paintings, sketches and sculptures selected by the artist himself and are on loan from both public and private collections. The layout of the show offers visitors the opportunity to discover for themselves the impressive plasticity and density of meaning involved in the artist's work. His post-impressionist realism gives emphasis to portraiture and abstract painting. The exhibition is curated by Kyriakos Koutsomallis and displays the prolific work of one of the most influential portrait and abstract painters of our time. The show is supported by Peggy and Daphne Zoumboulaki and includes a documentary which was filmed with the help of Nikos Paisios. There will be guided tours in English and in Greek as well as educational programmes for children between 6 and 13 years old.

Κατά τη διάρκεια της έκθεσης θα γίνονται ξεναγήσεις για το κοινό. The Alpha Bank Cultural Centre in Nafplio hosts a painting exhibition by Yerasimos Steris entitled Mythological Subjects. The works date from 1931-1936 and were considered to be quite controversial at that time because of their reference to Jungian archetypes and the simple yet fascinating symbolism they convey. The exhibition also includes archival material about the artist's life, provided by his wife, Anne d' Este. In the same venue, visit an exhibition of Ancient Coinswhich display famous mythological scenes. Myths that were only transmitted orally were given very specific and stylised depictions on coins so that people could recognise them. In the exhibition, 40 ancient coins belonging to the Alpha Bank Collection are displayed with carvings inspired by the mythological tradition of many areas of the ancient world. There will be guided tours for both exhibitions, which will be on till the 2nd November 2008.

Athenians have no refuge

ome friends came for a visit from New York and told me that they found Athenians to be hospitable and yet very aggressive towards one another. I was curious to know more, so they gave me a number of examples. Firstly, people have to battle to get off the metro, as those wanting to get on it block their exit. When traffic lights turn green, the car in front has to accelerate away as if they were in a race, otherwise the drivers waiting behind will turn nasty. If, when walking on the pavement, somebody elbows you or shoves you or catches you with their bags of shopping, they won't even turn to look, let alone apologise. I'm sure that New Yorkers themselves don't always behave as if they're guests at a reception. However, the person who elbows you aside might be somebody hurrying to go to their office in Wall Street at five o'clock in the morning. In Athens, you might get elbowed by the retired gentleman who is merely scurrying to the coffee shop round the corner for his morning fix of caffeine. These observations gave me much to ponder over. Why do we behave like that? It might seem like an obvious answer, but it still holds true, that the public spaces available cause us to behave like that. If you only have a narrow pavement to walk on with cars whizzing past a few centimetres away, you are bound to start swearing at somebody the minute you have the opportunity to vent your frustration. You might be constantly worried that you are unable drive into the city centre because the area could be blocked by a demonstration at any time dur-

S άποιοι φίλοι από τη Νέα Υόρκη μού είπαν, κατά την επίσκεψή τους στην Αθήνα, ότι οι κάτοικοι της ελληνικής πρωτεύουσας τους φάνηκαν φιλόξενοι αλλά γεμάτοι επιθετικότητα ο ένας προς τον άλλον. Μου έφεραν και παραδείγματα. Στο μετρό γινόταν μια μικρή μάχη για να καταφέρεις να βγεις πριν σου κλείσουν την είσοδο αυτοί που θέλουν να μπουν. Στον πράσινο σηματοδότη, αν το πρώτο αυτοκίνητο δε φύγει λες και είναι στην εκκίνηση της Φόρμουλα 1, οι υπόλοιποι είναι έτοιμοι να λιντσάρουν τον οδηγό. Στο δρόμο μπορεί να σε σκουντήξουν ή να σε γρατσουνίσουν με τσάντες από ψώνια και να μη γυρίσουν ούτε να σε κοιτάξουν. Είναι βέβαιο ότι ούτε στη Νέα Υόρκη οι περαστικοί φέρονται σαν να είναι σε δεξίωση. Όμως, εκεί την αγκωνιά μπορεί να τη φας από κάποιον που πηγαίνει ξημερώματα στο γραφείο του στο χρηματιστήριο, ενώ στην Αθήνα το ίδιο ισχύει και για τον συνταξιούχο που πάει να πιει ελληνικό στο καφενείο της γειτονιάς. Οι παρατηρήσεις των φίλων μου με έβαλαν σε σκέψεις. Γιατί φερόμαστε έτσι; Μια εύκολη απάντηση -αρκετά ουσιώδης όμως- είναι ότι ο ίδιος ο δημόσιος χώρος μάς αναγκάζει. Αν ο πεζός δεν έχει ούτε ένα εκατοστό για να περπατήσει στο πεζοδρόμιο και τα αυτοκίνητα περνούν ξυστά από δίπλα του, είναι σχεδόν βέβαιο ότι θα βρίσει κάποιον με την πρώτη ευκαιρία. Αν ο οδηγός ενός αυτοκινήτου αντιμετωπίζει κάθε μέρα το εν-

δεχόμενο μιας πορείας που θα κλείσει το κέντρο της πόλης, αποκλείεται να μην εκτονώσει τα νεύρα του όπου βρει. Ο μέσος πολίτης που κάνει τον κόπο να πετάξει το κουτί από τα τσιγάρα του σε έναν κάδο απορριμμάτων νιώθει τουλάχιστον ηλίθιος όταν βλέπει δίπλα του μια θεοβρόμικη πόλη. Σύμφωνοι. Αυτά συμβαίνουν και σε άλλα μέρη του κόσμου. Με μια μικρή διαφορά όμως. Ακόμα και αν πας στο πιο κακόφημο μέρος της Νέας Υόρκης, υπάρχει πάντα το Σέντραλ Παρκ. Αν νιώθεις άσχημα στα άθλια προάστια του Παρισιού, κάνεις μια βόλτα στο Σηκουάνα. Αν αισθανθείς μίζερα στο Λονδίνο, σε καλμάρει μια επίσκεψη στην Τέιτ. Στην Αθήνα, δεν έχουμε εύκολη παρηγοριά, εκτός και αν είναι κάποιος διατεθειμένος να πάρει το αυτοκίνητο, να φύγει από το κέντρο και να κατέβει στη θάλασσα. ∆εν υπάρχουν πολλοί πεζόδρομοι, ο Εθνικός Κήπος απευθύνεται σε παιδάκια και γέρους, οι πλατείες μας είναι για τα κλάματα. Ο ταλαίπωρος Αθηναίος δεν έχει διεξόδους. Είναι εγκλωβισμένος σε μιαν αφιλόξενη πόλη, χωρίς πολλές ελπίδες για ένα διάλειμμα, μια ανάσα, μια σύσκεψη με τον εαυτό του σε ένα περιβάλλον ηρεμίας. Οι καφετέριες είναι γεμάτες. Αλλά αυτό είναι μια φτηνή εκτόνωση. C-A

ing the day. Therefore, it is understandable that you'll be on edge and you'll want to let off steam. Should you take the trouble to put your rubbish in the bin, rather than throw your empty cigarette packet onto the pavement, the filthy city around you will make a mockery of your public-spirited action. I know what you're thinking. These things happen in every city of the world. There's a slight difference, though. New York might have really rough areas, but it does also have Central Park. Paris has got wretched suburbs, but you can always take a walk along the Seine. London might make you feel miserable, but visiting the Tate will lift your spirits. In Athens, we have nothing to console us, unless we take the car and leave the centre to go to the beach. There aren't many pedestrianised areas, the National Gardens are only for the elderly and young children, our piazzas are lamentable. Unfortunately, average Athenians have no refuge. They are trapped in an inhospitable city, without much hope of a respite, a breath of fresh air, a moment of quiet contemplation in a peaceful environment. Cafeterias might be full, but they fall short of all the other options mentioned. C-A

A R R I VA L S άθομαι στο τραμ και αρχίζω το ταξίδι μου για το εξωτικό... Καλαμάκι. Αφετηρία λοιπόν το ωραιότερο σημείο του κέντρου: η Βουλή (υποκειμενικά είναι αυτά). Αφορμή είναι και το τελευταίο CD της Άλκηστης Πρωτοψάλτη από το οποίο ακούω το Πάμε Χαβάη: "Λοιπόν έλα! Στη μηχανή ανέβα! Πήρα θαλάσσιο στρώμα, δυο-τρία μαγιό ακόμα" κτλ. Εξαιρετικά ευδιάθετη η τελευταία δουλειά της δυναμικής ερμηνεύτριας.

Καθώς η ώρα περνά και αφού έχω αφήσει πίσω μου τη στάση Μπακνανά (τι αστείο όνομα!) επιλέγω το CD ∆υνατά 1986-2007 που περιέχει τα 27 καλύτερα τραγούδια της Ελευθερίας Αρβανιτάκη. Φυσικά κολλάω στο Μην Ορκίζεσαι, ένα ηλεκτρονικά ενορχηστρωμένο ταγκό, σε ελληνικούς στίχους, από τον Νίκο Μοραΐτη.

τραγ ύδια της άμμου

Είναι ∆ευτέρα και σήμερα δεν είχα δουλειά στο γραφείο. Μήνας Αύγουστος και η Αθήνα ήσυχη και ζεστή. Πήρα την απόφαση να πάω για μια βουτιά μόνος. "Ποιος παίρνει αυτοκίνητο; Θα πάω με το τραμ", συλλογίστηκα. Παίρνω ένα μαγιό-βερμούδα πορτοκαλί, για να είμαι σαν σημαδούρα από μακριά, και φτάνω γύρω στις έντεκα στο Σύνταγμα, όπου είναι η αφετηρία του τραμ. Μαζί μου, μόνιμος συνοδός, το iPod. Το concept της ημέρας είναι η ακρόαση ελληνικής μουσικής την ώρα της ηλιοθεραπείας.

Γύρω στις 11.40 κατεβαίνω από το τραμ ακούγοντας την τελευταία παραγωγή του Νίκου Πατρελάκη. Ο ταλαντούχος Έλληνας δημιουργός, από τους πρώτους που μύησε το ελληνικό κοινό στη σκηνή της ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής, με κερδίζει για ακόμη μια φορά. Φοράω τα μαύρα μου γυαλιά και με τον ήλιο να μου καίει το πρόσωπο, το Echoes -μια δουλειά που πήρε σχεδόν τέσσερα χρόνια στο Νίκο Πατρελάκη για να ολοκληρωθεί- με ταξιδεύει. Τα ειδυλλιακά μουσικά τοπία και οι επιρροές από την τζαζ μέχρι την μπόσα νόβα με κάνουν να θέλω να αφήσω το CD στο repeat μέχρι να φύγω. Η επόμενη επιλογή μου είναι η Ηρώ. Το δυναμικό comeback από τη μοναδική καλλιτέχνιδα έχει πολλά να μας πει. Ακούω το Amore mio, που είναι ένα εκπληκτικό ντουέτο της τραγουδίστριας με τον Gigi D' Alessio. Ο τίτλος του CD είναι Αλλάζω και αυτό που το χαρακτηρίζει είναι οι νοσταλγικές μπαλάντες γραμμένες στο πιάνο, που παραπέμπουν συνήθως σε εφήμερους καλοκαιρινούς έρωτες.

Last Monday I took the day off from work following my decision to take the tram and head for the beach. By eleven o'clock I was in Syntagma Square where the tram begins, clutching my swimming togs and my trusty iPod.

I had brought only Greek music for my day at Kalamaki and as I set off from outside the Parliament building -the most attractive part of the city centre in my opinion- I listened to Let's Go to Hawaii (It's a Pity) from the new CD by Alkisti Protopsalti. This latest offering by the dynamic singer really puts you in the mood for some fun. I then selected the CD Dynata 19862007, which contains the 27 best songs of Eleftheria Arvanitaki. I'm obsessed by a tango tune with an electronic backing called Don't Vow. As I got off the tram, I checked out the latest work by the talented radio producer Nikos Patrelakis. He was one of the first to introduce Greek audiences to electronic music. I was blown away by his album Echoes, which creates an idyllic musical landscape. The music, which you will find highly addictive, is influenced by jazz and bossa nova tunes. Next on my list was the singer and songwriter Iro, who has just made a dynamic comeback. unique voice as she sang Amore mio in a Greco-Italian duet with Gigi D'Alessio. The CD is entitled I'm changing and is full of slushy ballads written for the piano, with short-lived summer loves as their main theme. My musical foray continued with She can't, she's in a meeting, an album by Efstathia. The songwriter who achieved public acclaim through the Thessaloniki Music Competition has proved to be extremely innovative in her music and lyrics. Efstathia addresses the challenges that confront human relationships in the urban environment. She writes pop ballads, influenced by jazz, in which she humorously describes everyday Greek life. As I sipped my frappe and relaxed in the sun, I made my final musical selection choosing Cyanna, a Greek band who write songs in English. Their music has always reminded me of new age, rock' n'roll, and punk. It is electronica that definitely characterises most of their recent works, though. Their latest project Just a crash conjures up images of youngsters filled with enthousiasm, dancing at parties, holding fluorescent sticks. Time flew by and before I knew i had to return to the city centre. I left behind the shouting kids, courting couples and the elderly ladies with their enormous straw hats, as my musical journey drew to an end. C-A

You will certainly find a place to lock up your bike (that's why it's become a cyclists' hangout). Be warned: you might find it difficult to cycle back after two or three beers.

Να πηγαίνω για βρόμικο στην πλατεία Μαβίλη. Οι Αμερικανοί το αποκαλούν hot dog αλλά οι Έλληνες αρνούνται να αντικαταστήσουν αυτήν την τιμητική ονομασία που του έχουν προσδώσει. Ύστερα από ένα τρελό μεθύσι, είναι το μόνο που μπορεί να σε επαναφέρει στην τάξη. / Go for a hot dog or a kebab at one of the canteens on Mavili square. After a bar crawl, it's the only thing that can set you straight.

Να πηγαίνω στο Ζέφυρο στα Πετράλωνα, γιατί είναι ένας από τους λίγους θερινούς κινηματογράφους της Αθήνας που έχουν τόσο έντονη την αίσθηση της γειτονιάς. Αγαπάει τον ευρωπαϊκό κινηματογράφο, έχει γευστικότατα ποπ κορν και πολύ ωραία μεζεδοπωλεία τοποθετημένα περιφερειακά για το after της υπόθεσης. / Catch a film at the Zefyros open-air cinema in Petralona, which gives you the true feeling of being in a traditional neighbourhood. It shows a preference for European cinema, has delicious popcorn, and there are many good tavernas serving meze in the vicinity for post-film entertainment.

Το ολόλευκο σπιτικό ντεκόρ του σε ταξιδεύει χιλιόμετρα μακριά από την Αθήνα, ενώ τα προσεγμένα του πιάτα μπορούν να ικανοποιήσουν κάθε απαιτητικό στομάχι. HThe Sections The 14th Athens International Film Festival will feature two competition sections. In the main International Competition Section, up-and-coming directors will have the chance to present their work and compete for the Golden Athena Award, which comes with a €10,000 cash prize. Following a well-established tradition, this year's best film will be selected by our European Youth Jury Panel, comprised of film students from all over Europe. In addition, the Music and Film Competition Section, by far the most popular Festival section, will once again feature a great selection of movies dedicated to music legends. The best film in this category will be picked by an International Jury Panel and will be presented with a second Golden Athena, which also comes with a €10,000 cash prize. Other sections to look out for include Premieres, featuring some of the best productions to be released next winter, On the Edge, our very own arthouse section for those with a taste for the avant-garde, Special Screenings and Retrospectives for a glimpse into film history. Non-fiction fans will be happy to know that we have a great selection of Documentaries in store for them, while all late birds out there can look forward to some after hours fun with our Midnight Movies Section. HΗ Πρεμιέρα και το Κεντρικό Αφιέρωμα Ανατρεπτικότητα. Ανησυχία. ∆ράση. Αντίδραση. Αναζήτηση. Τόλμη. Αυτά είναι μερικά από τα απαράβατα χαρακτηριστικά του ∆ιεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου της Αθήνας Conn-X. Αλλά όχι μόνο. Είναι τα βασικά στοιχεία της ταινίας Entre les Murs (Ανάμεσα στους Τοίχους), του Λοράν Καντέ (Ελεύθερος Ωραρίου), που τιμήθηκε με το Χρυσό Φοίνικα στο Φεστιβάλ των Κανών και που θα χτυπήσει το κουδούνι της έναρξης στις φετινές Νύχτες Πρεμιέρας Conn-X. Το Ανάμεσα στους Τοίχους θέτει τον τόνο, όχι μόνο της 14ης διοργάνωσης, αλλά και των ημερών που περνάμε - μιας εποχής δύσκολης, ασφαλώς μεταβατικής, μ' ένα συννεφιασμένο παρόν και απαιτήσεις για το μέλλον. Το Αφιέρωμα Εκπαίδευση: ∆ιαγωγή Μηδέν παρουσιάζει μια δεκάδα από αποκλειστικά καινούριες ταινίες, ανεξάρτητες στο πνεύμα κι εξαρτημένες από το ανεξήγητο εφηβικό φαινόμενο, αυτό που σε πρώτη ματιά μας είναι δυσνόητο και σε δεύτερη ελκυστικό, μαγνητικό, γεμάτο ορμή και ειλικρίνεια.

HOpening Film and Concept Tribute Subversiveness; boldness; restlessness; dissent. Any regular viewer will recognise the above as the unmistakable trademarks of the Athens International Film Festival Conn-X. It is no accident then that to open this year's festival we have chosen a film in a similar mindset. Based on Francois Begaudeau's book of the same title and starring the author as the teacher, Laurent Cantet's (Time Out) Palme d'Or winning Entre les Murs (The Class) is a radical portrayal of adolescent turmoil. Entre les Murs is essentially a study of any young person's struggle to find her place in our turbulent and contradicting times. For adults, this battle, lost or won, is well in the past; it's the kids' turn now. So while our teenagers head towards an uncertain future, the 14th Athens International Film Festival will turn the spotlight to the people returning to class this September and try to take a peek into their thoughts and intentions, through its Special Tribute. Class Conduct: Poor brings together ten brand-new films, independent in spirit but hopelessly dependent on the charm of the adolescent phenomenon incomprehensible, exasperating but at the same time intriguing, and captivating.

Il Divo is a witty expose of Italy's controversial ex-prime minister Giulio Andreotti's life and his connections with organized crime, made by maverick director Paolo Sorrentino. Phedon Papamichael was the director of photography for films like Million Dollar Hotel, Walk the Line, and Sideways. He is now the director of From Within, a film that follows a string of bizarre suicides in a small American community. Last but not least, Robert Patton-Spurill's Public Enemy: Welcome to the Terrordome offers a fascinating look into the history of one of the most influential and subversive hip hop bands in history.

Τις μέρες του Ολυμπιακού Σεπτέμβρη, το Αίθριο των Μουσών υποδέχτηκε για πρώτη φορά τους επισκέπτες του. Από τότε, κάθε Σεπτέμβριο, ο φιλόξενος και δροσερός χώρος του Αιθρίου των Μουσών, που αποτελεί την φυσική προέκταση του Μεγάρου προς το ύπαιθρο, δεν έπαψε να προσελκύει το κοινό με καλλιτεχνικές εκδηλώσεις υψηλής αισθητικής και στόχο την προώθηση της σύγχρονης ελληνικής μουσικής.

Enchanting nights at the Forum of the Muses The Forum of the Muses is located in the private grounds of Megaron, right behind the concert hall, where each September the public is drawn by a range of cultural events. This year, evenings will be devoted to acclaimed singers, song writers, and composers with the aim to promote the best of Greek music.

he voices of Panos Katsimichas, Yannis Koutras and Manos Xydous can be heard on the 2nd and 3rd September, while Philippos Pliatsikas will perform on the 5th and 6th of the same month. A performance by Glykeria on the 8th and 9th September will also feature the Estudiantina Traditional Orchestra and will focus on songs concerning love and foreign lands. The highlight of the season is to be a concert by composer Dimitri Papadimitriou and singer Fotini Darra on the 11th September. Sonia Theodoridou will interpret wellknown songs by Jacques Brel in a performance entitled Ne me quitte pas on the 16th and 17th September. Dionysis Tsaknis will appear onstage

on the 20th September. On the 22nd September Michalis Tzouganakis, along with Eleni and Susan Vouyoukli, will perform Balkan songs and folk music to round off the events organised this September for the festival of the Forum of the Muses. C-A

Let the music be your guide Jazz Αν είσαι φαν του Duke Ellington, της Ella Fitzgerald, του Louis Armstrong και πολλών ακόμα θρύλων της τζαζ, καλό είναι να επιλέξεις ένα από τα υπέροχα τζαζάδικα της πόλης. Πρώτη επιλογή θα έλεγα το Jazz in Jazz (∆εινοκράτους 6, Λυκαβηττός). Ένα ζεστό ξύλινο μπαρ διακοσμημένο με μουσικά όργανα της τζαζ και αυτόγραφα καλλιτεχνών-θρύλων. Ο dj (μορφή ο κύριος!) επιλέγει σπάνιες ηχογραφήσεις και μας ταξιδεύει στην Αμερική του '40, τότε που η τζαζ έχτιζε τα θεμέλια της σημερινής μουσικής με πρωτόγνωρη φαντασία και ταλέντο. Ένα ακόμα αγαπημένο στέκι για να ακούσεις τζαζ στην Αθήνα είναι και το Bar Guru Bar (Jazz Upstairs) (πλατεία Θεάτρου 10, Θησείο). Jazz Jazz in Jazz (6 Dinokratous Street, Lycavittos) is your best bet if your are a fan of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and all the other jazz legends. The walls are decorated with musical instruments and

πόλης, εδώ δημιουργούν διεθνή ονόματα όπως ο Benny Green και τα δικά μας ταλαντούχα jazz-όπαιδα όπως ο Κώστας Μπαλταζάνης και ο Τάκης Πατερέλης. Πολλοί ακόμα βιρτουόζοι καλλιτέχνες αναλαμβάνουν να μας ταξιδέψουν στην αρμονία της τζαζ. Εναλλακτική μουσική Είναι μουσική που γεννιέται στις μεγαλουπόλεις και κυρίως ακούγεται από τα παιδιά των σύγχρονων αστικών κέντρων. Είναι ήχοι και μελωδίες, που μας φέρνουν εικόνες εργοστασίων, μεταλλικών διαβάσεων, σταθμών του μετρό και θορύβων απίστευτου μποτιλιαρίσματος. Το πρώτο μαγαζί που μου έρχεται στο μυαλό είναι το Booze Cooperativa (Κολοκοτρώνη 57, Αθήνα). Ο μινιμαλιστικός φωτισμός που παραπέμπει σε βιοτεχνία που λειτουργεί βράδυ και ένα φωτιστικό φτιαγμένο από κάτι που μοιάζει με δίπλες (πόσες φορές σκέφτηκα να δοκιμάσω αν τρώγεται) μας εισάγει στο κλίμα της εναλλαγής. Στους τοίχους συνήθως παίζει κάποιο video art και είναι αδύνατο να μην κολλήσεις σε μερικά από τα επαναλαμβανόμενα πλάνα του, καθώς πίνεις ένα mojito. Οι θαμώνες είναι από αγγλοσπουδασμένα παιδάκια με το μαλλί αφάνα μέχρι καθηγητές πανεπιστήμιου (για ένα γνωστό μου χτυπάει η καμπάνα), μουσικούς και φοιτητές. Το Booze έχει γράψει τη δική του ιστορία και συνεχίζει ακάθεκτο. Λίγο παρακάτω, στου Ψυρρή, βρίσκεται το Soul. Χαρακτηρίζεται ως ένα από τα hip στέκια της Αθήνας. Για εμένα αυτό το μέρος σαφώς και εκφράζει το alternative κοινό της πόλης. Στον πάνω όροφο (με το χαρακτηριστικό κόκκινο Χ στον τοίχο) γίνονται πάρτι ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής. Groovy επιταγές στον κάτω όροφο και η αυλή αποτελεί την ιδανική πρόταση για το καλοκαίρι. Με χαλαρή διάθεση ακούς αγαπημένους ξένους καλλιτέχνες της alternative αλλά και Έλληνες δημιουργούς όπως ο Μιχάλης ∆έλτα και άλλους παραγωγούς από την Klik Records. Mid και Up Tempo ήχοι δίνουν άλλο χρώμα στη βραδιά. Το επόμενο στέκι που σκέφτομαι βρίσκεται δίπλα στις ράγες του τρένου. Το Κ44 (Κωνσταντινουπόλεως 44) είναι ένας ανοιχτόχρωμος πολυχώρος, που κατά καιρούς φιλοξενεί διάφορα events και happenings.

Bar Guru Bar (Jazz Upstairs) (10 Theatron Square, Thission) is another favourite jazz hangout. In the upstairs bar, you will find some of the best live music in Athens by both up-and coming and well-known Greek and American jazz artists. House Εδώ μιλάμε για ηλεκτρονικούς ήχους προγραμματισμένους, φιλτραρισμένους και έτοιμους να σε παρασύρουν σε μια μανιώδη διάθεση να χορέψεις και να τα σπάσεις. Minimal house, Tech House, Industrial House είναι μερικοί από τους ορισμούς που έχουν δοθεί στη House ανάλογα με το μουσικό περιβάλλον που δημιουργεί κάθε φορά. Το μόνο σίγουρο είναι ότι η αδρεναλίνη χτυπάει κόκκινο, οι φλέβες ιδρώνουν και οι κόρες των ματιών διαστέλλονται. Στην Αθήνα, τα beats τα ακούμε συνήθως στα clubs, πράγμα που σημαίνει ότι τέτοια εποχή μπορεί να χρειαστεί να εγκαταλείψετε το κέντρο. Πού "βαράει" (δηλαδή πού παίζει καλή μουσική κατά τους house-άδες); Τα decks χτυπάνε δυνατά στην παραλιακή. Το club AMMOS (Ποσειδώνος 251, Άλιμος) φιλοξενεί κάθε εβδομάδα μεγάλα ονόματα της εγχώριας και της διεθνούς dance σκηνής. Σε απόσταση αναπνοής από τη θάλασσα, τα beats εναλλάσσονται με βουτιές. Από τους αγαπημένους μας Spirit Of Love και Dj Dimpap (αξέχαστα πάρτι στο Motel) μέχρι Cj Jeff και Mikee. Παραμένοντας για clubbing στην παραλιακή ζώνη (στην ανατολική πλευρά αυτή τη φορά) ένας άλλος προορισμός είναι το Prova Cafe By Isla (Λ. Ποσειδώνος 37, Ν. Μάκρη). ∆ίπλα στο κύμα οι djs ανεβάζουν το κοινό. Το πάρτι αρχίζει την ώρα που δύει ο ήλιος. Έντονα μουσικά τοπία στήνονται δίπλα στη θάλασσα και η εμπειρία είναι μοναδική.

Alternative music Booze Cooperativa (57 Kolokotroni street) is the first venue that comes to mind when talking about urban alternative music in Athens. The minimalist lighting is reminiscent of an industrial workshop at night and one of the chandeliers looks like it's made of pancakes (don't try to eat it, though). There is always some video art being screened on the wall for you to admire whilst sipping your mojito.You will find a broad mix of people and age groups at this well-established venue which remains as popular as ever. Soul is one of the hippest places in Psyrri at present, showcasing the city's alternative scene. Upstairs, electronic music parties are organised, whilst downstairs you'll discover groovier sounds. The garden, with its more relaxed atmosphere, makes an ideal choice for the summer. Just sit back and enjoy the alternative Greek and foreign music playing over the speakers. Κ44 (44 Konstantinoupoleos Street) is right next to the railway line. It is a colourful multi-purpose venue which hosts all sorts of events and happenings. House At this time of year, the best clubs for house music can be found on the coast. AMMOS (251 Posidonos Avenue, Alimos) has different guest djs every week from the local and international dance scene. It is located beside the sea, so you can take a dip between tracks. Οι Έλληνες διστάζουν να μείνουν μέσα ακόμη και κατά τους χειμερινούς μήνες, οπότε όπως καταλαβαίνετε τον Αύγουστο και το Σεπτέμβριο βρίσκονται σε κατάσταση εγρήγορσης. aradise isn't far if you own a car, which is invaluable in big city like Athens that doesn't have a frequent night bus service. If you have this basic requirement, then simply put on your swimsuit, put a torch and a beach towel on the back seat and head for Alimos beach. We're not suggesting a nightime swim (although it sounds thrilling) but a visit to Ammos Beach Club, which hosts djs and bands from the independent dance music scene. THE ATHENS CENTRE he Athens Centre is an educational and cultural institute which has been sponsoring programmes and cultural activities in Greece since 1970. The Centre is housed in a neoclassical building in the residential area of Mets in central Athens. A comprehensive modern Greek language programme is offered year-round, and is recognised and accredited by colleges and universities in the U.S. and Europe, as well as by EU organisations. Courses vary in intensity and duration and are open to people of all ages and nationalities. Classes are small, with an average of 4-8 students at each level.

The Athens Centre is affiliated with universities in the United States in offering semesters in Greece emphasising, but not limited to, Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. Housing, classrooms, computer facilities, field trips and administrative support are some of the services the Centre provides for these programmes. The Centre also sponsors summer programmes of art, poetry and theatre. In addition to classroom instruction, these seminars include special events and evening activities in which all students participate. The programmes all take place during the same three-week period, creating a vibrant, interactive, creative community of participants from all over the world.

Education, Education, education What are your earliest memories of school? Was it of some child being sick in assembly? Or perhaps the kid who became hysterical when his mother left him with the teacher?

'll never forget my first days at school. Back then, there were no selection criteria and there was no choice. I merely went to Playstreet Lane Primary, just like everyone else my age. The name may have been quite charming, but the staff seemed child phobic and memories of the food still cause me to wake up at nights in a cold sweat. I never did discover what the black lumps in the mashed potato were and I have never, ever again eaten (nor ever want to) green mint-flavoured custard. If I raised my piping childish voice to complain, my parents would assure me that the whole ordeal was "character building and for your own good". I was also promised that one day in the future (i.e. now), I would look back on my schooldays as the happiest time in my life. However, this is patently not true, since the happiest time of my life was spent sitting on a beach in the Cyclades, rather than being forced to recite my times tables by an ill-tempered old bat. It wasn't all bad though; we did have one teacher, whom we all loved, called Miss Downey. She used to draw pictures of bunny rabbits on the blackboard ... but then one day I saw her in the street with her boyfriend and I never forgave her.

Fast forward thirty odd years and I find myself moving to Greece. The decision was made because the country seemed to be a more child-friendly environment, appropriate for raising a family. I had met and been impressed by Greek pupils who appeared enthusiastic about school

and shared a mutual respect with their teachers. The thing that struck me was that people here considered a good education important in its own right and not just a necessary evil to be endured in order to land a well-paid career. I had also met many teachers from different schools in Athens and they all took a pride in their vocation, rather than just treating it as a job. Education, like food and sleep, is necessary and can even prove enjoyable and rewarding. Now that my own children (or "small people", as some educationalists insist on saying) are about to embark on their individual journey of academic discovery, I am filled with some misgivings. I would like their school-days memories to be a bit more positive than mine. One thing in their favour is that Athens hosts a number of first-rate schools, allowing parents to match the establishment to the child. Nevertheless, a number of factors do need to be mulled over. Should my Smithakia attend a Greek school or an English one? Perhaps they should go to a French or German school, which would give them fluency in a third language? Will their needs be met by the state sector or would they flourish more in an independent school? Although the amount of choice can be rather bewildering, there is really only one question that parents need to ask themselves: will this school provide my children with a supportive and caring environment, where their personality will flourish? The most important thing is for children to have self-confidence and a well-rounded education. I am sure that in Athens, we'll be spoilt for choice. C-A
