I really can’t believe it’s Ashes-time once again; it feels like only yesterday we were in Australia for the 2013 Series, and here we are now planning our tour Down Under as England look to retain the tiny urn! For me this is an absolute highlight in the sporting calendar, a real ‘must-see’ for all cricket fans and one that has to be experienced first-hand to be believed. Watching our boys take on the baggy greens under the blue skies of the Southern Hemisphere summer; snorkelling in the clear waters of the Great Barrier Reef; toasting the New Year with a glass of champagne in Sydney Harbour; and tucking into Christmas lunch whilst making predictions for the Boxing Day Test at the MCG…these are just a few of the reasons I look forward to the Ashes Tour more than any other. And the 2017-18 Magellan Ashes Series is no exception, with our team here at ITC headquarters having worked exceptionally hard to ensure we’ve created a selection of itineraries to suit your timescale, requirements and budget. ‘G’day mate’, is an expression you’re going to become familiar with on your visit with us Down Under for the 2017/18 Ashes Series. Other words that you’ll have to add to your vocabulary are Tooheys New, Four X Gold, VB Bitter, James Boag and of course Crown Lager. But amber fluid isn’t the only reason for travelling to Aussie. There’s the sunshine, warm waters to swim in at their lovely beaches, a great choice of restaurants in whichever city you find yourself and of course there’s the cricket. That is, in itself, a definite reason to visit Australia. The spectator support, the world-class stadiums, and let’s not forget the extremely entertaining banter between the English and Aussie fans.

The greatest Test in cricket is believed to have started with The Sporting Times’s coverage of England’s defeat to Australia at The Oval in 1882, which saw a mock obituary printed claiming England’s body would be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.

Hooray, it’s that time in the biannual calendar once again! My boots are well and truly hung up, yet there’s no contest as to which Test I look forward to the most. Each cricket tour is special, but somehow the Ashes excitement registers higher when it’s our boys’ turn to head Down Under.

My highlights? The biscuit tin of the Gabba where the First Test tensions are even more searing than the temperature; majestic Adelaide where the atmosphere in the renovated horseshoe arena is matched by the partying crowds who gather on the adjoining oval’s local wine and seafood stalls; Boxing Day at the MCG (surely on the bucket list for any self-respecting cricket fan?); and in my humble opinion the SCG, which for me is the best stadium to watch cricket anywhere in the world. So guess where I’ll be for all the action? I’ll save you a seat next to me!

THE ASHES STORY

The miniature terracotta urn - said to contain the charred remains of the bail used at The Oval on that fateful date - didn’t appear until the following winter in Australia. England departed for their tour with Captain Ivo Bligh vowing to return ‘The Ashes’. And so he did, at least with a symbol of them, in the form of the miniature urn presented to him by a group of Melbourne women at Rupertswood Estate on Christmas Eve 1882. And so started a rivalry that has enthralled and excited for over 134 years. In that time, the balance has constantly shifted between these two great cricketing nations and countless heroes and villains have emerged. Aussie batsman ‘The Don’ Bradman dominated the Tests in the thirties and forties, despite England’s best efforts to stop him under hero Douglas Jardine and his bodyline tactics. The fifties and sixties brought us the ‘Brylcreem Boy’ Denis Compton and Richie Benaud, while who could forget Geoff Boycott’s seventies or ‘Beefy’ Botham’s eighties? In the nineties the Australians, and Shane Warne in particular, dominated the Ashes, at least until THAT magnificent England win on home soil in 2005. Australia regained the treasured urn in 2006-07, then England in 2009, before their historic win Down Under in 2010-11. So followed a home win for England in 2013, then later that year the whitewash we never mention in Oz! In 2015 England regained the Ashes, and so we find ourselves going into the next Series.
