if i were a...
therapist
q + a with brittany taggart, who works as a licensed clinical social worker meet brittany My name is Brittany Taggart. I’m married and am a mom to a super fun 16-month-old boy! I also work full time as a therapist! I have a Master’s degree in Social Work and am licensed as a clinical social worker. For fun I love to hang out with my family, go on walks and hikes, play games, eat new or fancy foods, garden and read! We live in Utah.
what's it like being a therapist?
this is when Brittany received her LCSW, which stands for Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Utah. it means she can practice on her own license without supervision. it takes two years of full time work to earn the hours toward your license!
if you could do anything for a day... My dream day would be spent traveling with my husband and son. We love Italy, and I would love to spend a day back there eating incredible food and enjoying the beautiful art and culture. If I’m spending an ideal day at home, it includes making brunch or getting Einstein’s bagels, going for a run, spending time outside at a park or up in the mountains, and spending quality time together with family and friends. We also love to play pickleball and Yahtzee at our house!

I spend most of my time at work meeting with clients. I specialize in working with girls ages 12-17 in a treatment center. The girls live there and receive weekly therapy and family therapy as well as group therapy. It’s kind of like a boarding school for students dealing with all sorts of hard things in their lives, like trauma, addiction, family issues, depression and anxiety. I love my job because I meet all sorts of amazing people who let me in during the most difficult times of their lives. I work with girls from all over the country. My main goals at work are to help individuals develop the skills to manage whatever hardships life throws at them. We work a lot on teaching tools for regulating moods, managing mental health symptoms and being successful in lots of different areas of life!
what's your favorite thing about your job? It is incredibly rewarding to see people who seem to be at rock bottom find meaning in their life and begin to succeed! It’s easy to see someone else’s potential in life but what is truly rewarding is when they start to recognize their own potential and begin to honor that. I have met so many girls who have changed me and taught me so much about acceptance and love and resilience through the hardships of life. The relationships I have built through my job are the most rewarding aspect of it.
with her cute family
if i were a... therapist day in the life -I work pretty regular hours, Monday-Friday 9 am to 5 pm. Social workers can work in a lot of settings and do a lot of different things in the community, but for me, a day looks like this: 9 am - Arrive at work. Check in with staff members about how my clients did the night previously (behaviors, emotions, etc) Mid-morning - I usually work on paperwork. A big part of my job is working with insurance companies who fund clients’ treatments, coordinating why the client needs care and why insurance should pay for their continued treatment. 11 am-Noon - meetings and lunch! I am a supervisor at my work so I carry fewer clients on my caseload, but I supervise and teach newer therapists. We have meetings including supervision meetings, clinical team meetings and treatment team meetings where we go over various aspects of clients’ treatment including academics, medications, peer interactions, etc. 12 pm-3 pm - Therapy sessions. Each session is 45-50 minutes and then I spend 5-10 minutes charting (writing notes on) each session. 3 pm-4 pm - Group therapy 4 pm-5 pm - Meetings, paperwork, trainings or sessions.
Thanks Brittany!
If I were a... -- you'll find interviews with incredible people, who tell about their careers! We hope to inspire you and help you learn about what sparks your interest.
what's the most challenging thing about being a therapist? Sometimes we get clients who are in treatment against their will, whether their parents admitted them to treatment, their schools, or probation officers. When that is the case, they may be experiencing anger or not have the motivation to make changes. It is hard to see that and to help clients work through that; however, the absolute most challenging aspect of my job is hearing and helping people work through some horrible traumas they have experienced. I specialize in trauma and PTSD and my heart aches for some of the abuse and trauma my clients have gone through things, of course, that nobody should have to endure, especially as children.

advice for anyone interested in becoming a therapist? Get involved now! Start volunteering now! I got interested in my field by volunteering in lots of different places - serving dinner at a local homeless shelter, helping with groups at a drug rehab facility, and participating in activities with at-risk youth in my community. These things likely require your parent permission, but there are also probably opportunities right in your school and neighborhood to reach out and be a friend to all.

japan AOMORI PREFECTURE
こんにちは! (Kon'nichiwa! Hello!) I'm Lydia, I'm
17 and currently live in Alaska. Here are some fun facts about me: I can speak 3 languages, my favourite colour is orange, I love horror movies, and my mom is in the Air Force. Being a military brat, I've lived all over the world. My most recent move was from Japan. I lived there for 3 years and loved it. If any of you reading this want to visit Japan, and even if you haven't thought of it before, do it! It is such a beautiful country with a rich culture. What are the three most unique things about that place to you? All of the Shinto Shrines! They are everywhere, along with the vending machines. Everyone knows a little bit of English. Even if it is Just "hello" and "thank you", you can always meet someone who knows part of what you're saying. Not everything is industrialized. In many animes or travel guides, they always mention how advanced Japan is. What was hard about living there? While that is true for the big cities, there are smaller cities (like where I lived) that are similar to the American suburb or countryside. When I first moved there, it was hard adjusting to a different language. Everything was in Japanese, with the occasional English translations underneath, and everyone spoke Japanese (obviously!). It was so different than being in a country that I can understand everything. Over time, it became easier and when I eventually moved back to the states the English was hard to adjust to!
What's something not many people know about Japan? There are more vending machines than dentist offices. Special things about Japan? There are so many special things about Japan that I could list but I don't think anyone would want to read a whole page of what makes Japan special to me. I will say this, the people there are so kind. Whether they are expatriots or born and bred Japanese citizens, you will meet tons of people that would give you the shirt off their back. (Yonde kurete arigatō! thank you for reading!) :)

how to:
make sourdough WITH LIZ KENDELL a few general tips?
preparation:
Begin with a strong starter! This is key to producing an excellent rise and perfect crumb (texture). Take notes along the way, weigh out your ingredients, be patient and open to things possibly not going right the first (or second) round. Practice over perfection!
Feed your starter 10-12 hours before you plan to make the dough. I like to mix up the dough just after my starter has peaked - which depends on the temperature of my kitchen and how strong my starter is. Just keep an eye on your starter - a great test to see if its strong enough is to drop a tablespoon of it in a bowl of water to see if it floats. If it sinks to the bottom, it's not ready to be used yet.
what you need: 1 7/8 cups water (385g) 1/3 cup (90g) - sourdough starter 2 teaspoons fine sea salt (12g) 4 cups organic white bread flour (520g) Medium-sized mixing bowl with lid (plastic wrap works, too!) Scale Bowl scraper
looking amazing!!
・
Inspire to Create magazine 11
steps: I like to feed my starter in the morning so I can prep the dough that evening once my kids are in bed. You can also feed your starter in the evening if you’d like to make bread first thing in the morning. Find what schedule works best for you! Using a scale, weigh each ingredient being sure to “zero out” the scale in between. Begin with the water, then starter, then salt. Mix well to combine before adding the flour. Once all the ingredients are in the bowl, use both hands to work the flour into the liquid. The dough should be shaggy and somewhat difficult to work with. Focus on smashing the bits of flour that ball up to avoid dry pockets in your bread. Once the ingredients are mostly incorporated (don’t worry about it being perfectly mixed!), cover the bowl with a lid or damp towel for 20 minutes. (continued on next page)
a little short bio -Liz, a classically trained pastry chef (in her other life) and mom of two, who just really likes making bread. She also enjoys a wellcurated charcuterie board, dancing with her husband, live music, deep + interesting conversation and anything that challenges her creatively.
troubleshooting tips: If your bread doesn’t turn out as you wish, referring back to your notes can be very insightful. Noting simple things like how warm/cold your kitchen is, proofing period, starter strength and bake times can make a big impact on your final product. Making bread is an adventure, you gotta risk it for the biscuit!
"How to" is a new feature we're super excited about. We love interviews but wanted something more applicable. Make sure to check back every issue for skills + fun activities.
SOURDOUGH Now it's time to stretch and fold the dough. With a damp hand, pull the dough from the top of the bowl upwards then fold it over the center of the bowl. Quarter turn the bowl and repeat, stretching it up and over the middle. Repeat until you’ve done four stretch and folds. Cover, rest and repeat the process 20 minutes later. I like to shoot for 3-4 stretch and fold sessions, however, you can get away with doing just one or two. Once finished with the stretch and folds, cover the bowl with a secure lid or plastic wrap. This will help keep the moisture in. Leave the bowl on your counter to proof overnight.
Place your Dutch oven pot inside the oven to preheat at 450 degrees for 30 mins. Uncover the dough and score the top with a razor blade or sharp knife. Place dough inside the preheated pot and cover with the lid. Bake the bread covered for 32 minutes. Remove lid and bake for another 15 minutes. Your bread should be lightly browned (or darker brown depending on your preference). Look for an internal temperature of at least 200 degrees after the final bake. You can always cover your bread and bake for a few more minutes, if necessary. Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack for an hour before slicing. Or don’t, and just go to town on your hot, delicious and freshly made bread!
In the morning, check your dough. It should have risen quite a bit overnight and appear slightly domed and springy. If you’re unsure if it is proofed, try the poke test! Flour one of your fingers and poke the dough. If it indents easily and mostly springs back, it has probably proofed long enough. If it feels hard to indent, it most likely needs a little longer. If your dough appears really runny or loose, it is most likely over-proofed. For the sake of time and space, we’re going to assume your dough has proofed perfectly and is ready for the next step.

ASK THE
athlete q + a with Kayla Freedman, High School Gymnast Welcome back to Ask the Athlete. We are so excited for you to meet our FIRST ever teen interviewee, Kayla Freedman.
meet kayla Hi! I’m Kayla Freedman, and I am 15 years old. I'm a freshman at Holliston High School in MA. I have been doing gymnastics since I was 5 years old. I started competing when I was about 7 or 8 years old. My gym is Elite Gymnastics in Ashland, MA.
what's the best part about your sport?
a look into a day with gymnastics 6:00 pm: Do warm ups (stretching) 6:30 pm: Vault 7:00 pm: Bars 7:30 pm: Beams 8:00 pm: Floor 8:30 pm: Conditioning/workouts 9:00 pm: Go home
The excitement of going to the meets. Getting new skills, and seeing and hanging out with teammates. And making new friends! My favorite event is bars.
what's the worst part about your sport? Having mental blocks. Where your body knows you can do it, but your brain tells you that you can’t. It’s frustrating.
any advice for athletes who also do gymnastics? When you're struggling with a skill, have your teammates help you or tell your self you can. Take deep breaths, and be consistent with your training.
describe your sport in a sentence. Being mentally and physically in the zone, and having strength.
Thanks Kayla! - K & K

passion
all about
In this feature you'll learn about different passions, how to find one, and to be inspired by other people's passions. In this issue, we get to hear from Carolyn Wynn! Her passion is her writing business.
Meet Carolyn!
First, and foremost, I LOVE KIDS of all ages! I am a proud mom to Darren (28), Kirsten (26) and Edgar (26). I have a sweet pup named Zoey who is 7 years old, and I am obsessed with her! She's my little sidekick. I taught 5th grade for 16 years, and 6th grade English for 14 years before retiring early to pursue my business, The Reluctant Writer. I have always had a passion for writing and helping others with theirs. One of my favorite things about being an English teacher was sitting with a student one-onone, helping them with an essay, poem, or personal narrative. Now I do that every day with high school seniors, as well as pre-dental and pre-med students from all over the US and Canada.
want to learn more about The Reluctant Writer? facebook.com/car olynwynn114
When did you get into your passion? When I started teaching, I went to a professional development workshop. I heard a woman talking about her side job, helping high school seniors with their college applications. I immediately thought, "I am going to do that someday." Years later, I started helping my friends' kids with their college essays, and they started to get in! The very first student I worked with was accepted to Harvard and is now a doctor! Once I saw that I could be successful, I was ready. One snow day, I decided to start my business, and I created my FB page, The Reluctant Writer. I chose the name because I loved having breakthroughs with reluctant writers. I make it my goal to take the stress out of the process for parents and students. Some parents have even told me that I have saved the relationship between themselves and their child! How cool is that?

passion A cool fact about your passion?
Feeling stuck?
I think the coolest thing about my passion is the fact that it has taken me to a place where more than half of my clients are pre-dental students, just through word-ofmouth. This is especially amusing to me as I was terrified of the dentist when I was younger because I had a lot of issues with my teeth at a young age. My dentist and his wife (assistant) reminded me of characters out of a horror movie, they were so scary to me! Now, I love my dentist and actually enjoy going because everyone there is so nice in that office! I just never would have imagined that I would be helping pre-dental students write about why they want to become a dentist!!
Believe in yourself and visualize your dream coming true. One time someone said to me, "You seem to get everything you want in life." I was blown away as I thought about it. I realized most of the things I have achieved started with the phrase, "I am going to do that someday." From there, I visualized my goals into life. I dreamed of becoming The Reluctant Writer for more than 20 years. When the time was right, I went for it. You can do it! Make it happen.
Something you enjoy about your passion? My passion for helping others through my love of writing has brought me to a dream career where I get to help students achieve their dreams! I love the moment when we read over an essay or personal statement and get that feeling of pure happiness that it's perfect!

Advice for finding your passion? Your passion is what sets your soul on fire. When I work with someone now, I hang up the phone afterwards feeling invigorated and inspired because of what I get to do. I feel the honor of what it means to be a part of someone's journey in life. It's how I felt when I was teaching, too. Having a positive impact on others' lives is what most motivates and inspires me! Also, you have to take risks when you have a passion for something. Step outside your comfort zone in order to make things happen.

h t t h i e w k's a + q answers to questions readers asked on the last mag poll :)
How did you start creating the magazine online? We have actually always made it online! We would love to have print copies for sale, but it's so expensive! We're working on it though.
How do you make it look so neat and cute?
Where do you come up with these ideas?
We love design and aesthetic :) We love to make moodboards to gather our inspiration! Check out this issue's board in "behind the scenes".
We have a doc we call our "workspace" where we plan and brainstorm. Lots of these ideas get scratched! Sometimes they evolve into bigger and better ideas.
How do you contact people to do interviews? We have a huge list of possible people we want to interview, and when the time comes to plan, we pick someone from that list, or another person we have in mind. We pick based off of what we have in that issue, and try to balance out different topics. We typically email the person we want to interview, or text them if we have their phone number. We reach out and ask if they would be interested, and if they say "yes", we send them the form!
How do you work on it together (living far away)? Typically we FaceTime! Think of how everyone worked with people for online school, or video meetings for work. Except, this is for fun instead, haha! We have our document which the magazine is made on, and our workspace, where lots of planning happens.
What app/program do you use? We use two platforms, Canva and Google Docs for two completely different reasons! Google Docs is good for writing and planning, which is what we usually use it for. Canva is what the finished product is created on, and has all the elements, text features and other things that involve design.
