* 3 paragraph essay 1st paragraph= introduction Last time, we began discussing the difference between short-term and long-term memory and how memories are formed. In order to understand this better, it is helpful to look at long-term memory in particular and try to answer the question “how do we effectively remember things?� One of the many techniques that can improve memory is the use of mnemonic devices. A mnemonic device is any learning technique that aids information retention. Most commonly used mnemonics are auditory or sound based. Let me give you some examples of these kinds of techniques.

* 3 paragraph essay 2nd paragraph=topic #1 Say, I’m a language teacher and I want my students to memorize a pattern in grammar. Verb forms for example. I can set the forms to a little song that the students are familiar with already. When they hum the song they will remember the verb forms in place of the original words of the song. When I took Latin in high school, the teacher used Happy Birthday to teach us how to conjugate regular verbs. Many years later, I can still correctly conjugate verbs in Latin even though I have forgotten almost all of the vocabulary I learned.

In this technique, the first letters of words in a list are put together into an acronym or shortened form that is easy to remember. Once the acronym is recalled, it is easy to remember the words that the letters stand for. So, say you want to remember the names of the 7 coordinating conjunctions in English, just remember the acronym FANBOYS which stands for: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so.
