LISTENING Academic Lecture

60 to 90 seconds

* 3 paragraph essay 1st paragraph= introduction Last time, we began discussing the difference between short-term and long-term memory and how memories are formed. In order to understand this better, it is helpful to look at long-term memory in particular and try to answer the question “how do we effectively remember things? One of the many techniques that can improve memory is the use of mnemonic devices. A mnemonic device is any learning technique that aids information retention. Most commonly used mnemonics are auditory or sound based. Let me give you some examples of these kinds of techniques.

LISTENING Academic Lecture

* 3 paragraph essay 2nd paragraph=topic #1 Say, I’m a language teacher and I want my students to memorize a pattern in grammar. Verb forms for example. I can set the forms to a little song that the students are familiar with already. When they hum the song they will remember the verb forms in place of the original words of the song. When I took Latin in high school, the teacher used Happy Birthday to teach us how to conjugate regular verbs. Many years later, I can still correctly conjugate verbs in Latin even though I have forgotten almost all of the vocabulary I learned.

In this technique, the first letters of words in a list are put together into an acronym or shortened form that is easy to remember. Once the acronym is recalled, it is easy to remember the words that the letters stand for. So, say you want to remember the names of the 7 coordinating conjunctions in English, just remember the acronym FANBOYS which stands for: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so.

LISTENING NOTES Main Idea: Mnemonic devices help people retain information Topic #1: Memorize grammar -Details: verb forms matched to a song. Latin / Happy Birthday song to conjugate verbs. Can still remember

Topic #2: Acronyms -Details: 7 coord. conjunctions in English. FANBOYS

QUESTION 1. The question will ask you to summarize the lecture by stating the main idea and explaining the two topics. SAMPLE QUESTION: Using the examples from the lecture, explain how mnemonic devices can be used to aid in remembering information.

SPEAKING 60 Seconds

1. State the thesis from the introduction paragraph in one clear sentence. Define if necessary. Example: The professor discusses mnemonic devices, which are learning techniques that aid information retention.

SPEAKING 60 Seconds

2. State that the professor talks about two (people, ideas, subjects, events, types, styles...) to make his/ her point. Example: The professor talks about two different types of mnemonic devices.

SPEAKING 60 Seconds

3. State the first (person, idea, subject, event, type, style...) s/he discussed. Define if necessary. Example: The first type she discusses is a song.

SPEAKING 60 Seconds

4. Describe the details about topic #1. *This should be about 3 sentences long. Example: She explains that students can learn grammar by setting the forms to to a song the students already know. She talks about how when she was in school, her Latin teacher used a song to teach verb forms. He set the verb forms to the tune of “Happy Birthday. The professor says that because of the song, she can still remember Latin verb forms.

SPEAKING 60 Seconds

5. State the second (person, idea, subject, event, type, style...) s/he discussed just as the previous topic. Example:

The second type is the acronym, which is when you use the first letters of a group of words to make another word that you can remember easily. She explains that you can use the acronym FANBOYS to remember conjunctions in English. Each letter in the acronym stands for one of the conjunctions.
