or the conveying of thin walled tubular sections, such as beverage cans around the production process, chain specialist iwis offers a range of pin oven and tube transport chains. Which offers outstanding cost benefits.

Developed specifically for conveying drinks cans, iwis pin oven chains are extremely wear-resistant and feature precision roller chains fitted with transport pins and replaceable protective pin heads (Fig. 1). They allow thin-walled hollow bodies to be transported safely and reliably at high speeds at ambient or elevated temperatures with exposure to various media throughout the production process. Pin oven chains are used in the beverages industry and

wherever cans or other thin-walled hollow bodies need to be conveyed, printed, painted or dried. The standard chain size is M128ASL (ANSI 60, 12A-1). Other versions, for example with a corrosion-resistant coating or maintenance-free chains (ML and ML-2) are also available on request. In the standard configura-

tion every seventh pin is hollow to accept the transport pins. The chains can be tailored to include other pin spacings depending on the nature of the conveyed goods. The length of the transport pins can also be adapted and ranges from 184 mm to 214 mm in length from the chain’s longitudinal axis to the head. (Fig. 2: Ex-

ample of a POChain-I, dimension L). Flexible and easy to maintain The transport pins that hold the product are fitted in hollow chain pins at defined intervals and secured with self-locking nuts (POChain-P) or an additional lug and split pins (POChain-S). On models POChain-P and POChain-S, transport rods can be individually replaced in-situ - for example if they are

worn or damaged - by simply releasing the nut or removing the split pin. The chain does not need to be separated or removed from the machine, which saves maintenance time and ensures that the chain outlasts its attachment parts. Versions POChain-P and POChainS of the split pin oven chains also feature predefined fracture points in the transport pins that prevent damage in the event of a collision.

Compelling price/performance ratio The latest addition to iwis’ range of pin oven chains, which will be launched in June 2015, is labelled POChain-I and features a cost-optimized design and an excellent price/performance ratio. All versions of the POChain have spring-loaded protective heads on the transport pins to protect the conveyed hollow objects (Fig. 3). These heads are made from a high-temperature resis-

All POChains are supplied with a special lubricant adapted to the application that offers excellent lubrication properties at high temperatures and chain speeds, and is resistant to various corrosive substances. The transport pins are also available with special-geometry and fixed protective end profiles to suit any conveying application (Fig. 4). In addition to pin oven chains, Munich-based chain specialist iwis provides a full product range for all drive and conveying applications. This also includes precision and high-performance roller chains, conveyor chains, maintenance-free and corrosion-resistant chains, power and free conveyor chains, specialpurpose conveyor chains, flyer chains, flat-top chains, modular belts, chains and accessories for agricultural machinery, and timing drives for the automotive industry.

type, protection level and optional (such as encoder and electromagnetic brake). Product versions are also made according to the applications they are meant for, upon which further variants such as particular paints, increased power, to name

some but few, are proposed. All these versions combine to create a comprehensive and extended catalogue that is being constantly updated. That is further reason why Mini Motor has decided to group its production into macro categories, as follows:

CONTRINEX FOOD-GRADE INDUCTIVE SENSORS WITHSTAND HIGH-PRESSURE WASHDOWN CLEANING Food-grade washdown inductive sensors from Swiss manufacturer Contrinex are completely compatible with the strict hygiene standards of the dairy industry, helping maximize plant utilization during round-the-clock production of milk-based foodstuffs. Rated to IP68/IP69K, Contrinex stainless-steel washdown sensors withstand both aggressive cleaning chemicals and high-pressure water jets, offering highly robust solutions for the harshest operating environments. Food-grade sensors are available with IO-Link, a standardized serial connection protocol, providing digital communication in washdown areas at no additional cost.

C

leanliness is everything in foodprocessing facilities, and nowhere more so than in the dairy industry. A single instance of contamination during production can necessitate the destruction of multiple batches of milkbased foodstuffs - or, if undetected, result in illness, disease or death among consumers of infected products. It’s no surprise that for dairyplant operators, maintaining

the strictest possible hygiene standards is an absolute must. Given the simultaneous need to maximize plant utilization, time-consuming cleaning methods are highly undesirable. To avoid lengthy unproductive intervals between batches, food-processing facilities commonly utilize clean-in-place (CIP) and high-pressure washdown systems. Production equipment for washdown areas must therefore withstand both aggressive cleaning

chemicals and high-pressure water jets as a matter of course. This requirement extends to the sensors used throughout these areas. The Contrinex Washdown range of food-grade inductive sensors addresses these needs perfectly. Devices from both the Series 600 Classics and Series 700 Full Inox families are certified

to operate continuously and reliably in harsh conditions. Rated to IP68/IP69K, they are pressure-resistant up to 80 bar, corrosion-resistant and ideal for use in food and beverage industries. Sensing the presence and detecting the position of equipment or materials at each stage requires sensors that are both accurate and responsive. Contrinex Washdown inductive sensors are up to the task in all respects. With a choice of one-piece M12-, M18- or M30-diameter AISI 316L / V4A stainless steel bodies and sensing faces (Full Inox family) or M12-diameter AISI 316L/V4A stainlesssteel body and PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) FDA-approved sensing face (Classics family), these fully embeddable inductive sensors offer a highly robust solution for the harshest operating environment. Industry-standard PNP or NPN outputs with an integral M12 connector and IP69Krated cable set ensure compatibility with existing factory systems.

whether made from pasteurized or raw milk, undergo a number of common manufacturing operations during the early stages of production. Central to these are two aspects of process manufacture that require reliable, accurate flow-control systems: transportation and CIP. In each case, foodgrade washdown inductive sensors ensure that the correct operating sequence is followed. Process engineers use dedicated stainless-steel pipework to transport liquid ingredients from one operation to the next. Typically, fluid flow is managed using control valves fitted with electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic actuators. Depending on process requirements, two-way or multi-port valves, often rotary-shaft types, deliver raw milk from holding tanks to each process station in sequence,

maintaining specified flow rates and volumetric limits. Classics Washdown sensors for position sensing Sensing the position of a rotary-valve actuator is a routine task for Contrinex Classics Washdown inductive sensors. In this application, the PPS sensing faces are not required to withstand extremes of temperature or pressure, and the 2mm sensing distance of these M12-diameter devices is ideally suited to the application. These sensors interface directly with a range of industrial process controllers

and provide cost-effective confirmation of controlvalve status around the clock. Once processing of each batch is completed and all process vessels are drained, closed-loop CIP cleaning is initiated. In many instances, plant managers rely on flowtransfer panels to ensure separation of CIP and process flows; a flow-transfer panel utilizes a multi-port manifold that provides a physical break between flow streams in accordance with good manufacturing practices (GMPs). Connection between ports

is effected manually by means of U-shaped jumper pipes with positional feedback from inductive sensors mounted on the panel. Full Inox Washdown sensors for presence sensing Manual connection carries with it a greater risk of direct contact between assembled parts. Contrinex Full Inox Washdown sensors provide optimum resistance to mechanical shocks, while offering the option of extended sensing distances. Multiple M30-diameter devices, positioned at predetermined locations on each panel, sense the presence of a locating feature on each jumper pipe, confirming that the correct ports are interconnected before CIP cleaning is initiated. These units, with corrosion-resistant one-piece stainless-steel housings and a 20mm sensing distance, protect against impact damage and also withstand accidental contact with aggressive CIP cleaning solutions. Full Inox Washdown sensors for positional control The need for accurate position sensing doesn’t end there. Downstream processing in soft-cheese production is equally dependent on

Automation

highly reliable washdown inductive sensors for effective control of day-to-day operations. Curd-making is the fundamental process in cheese production. Typically, softcheese curd is made in large stainless-steel vats, where milk is mixed with a curdling agent and heated gently, resulting in the separation of curd from the whey. Automated knives cut the curd particles to the correct size, following which the vat is tipped to discharge firstly the whey, followed by the curd. Carefully controlled tipping is essential to prevent damage to the curd. The vat rotates slowly about a horizontally oriented support shaft. Washdown inductive sensors from the Full Inox family, mounted immediately adjacent to one side of the vat, detect the position of a cam on the shaft, confirming the degree of angular rotation at pre-set intervals. These M18diameter one-piece stainlesssteel devices, with a 10mm sensing distance, match the requirements perfectly.

In dairy-food production, processes run continuously, with remote diagnostics eliminating almost every need for manual intervention. Interrogating an IO-Link-enabled device returns its manufacturer ID and product ID, allowing systems integrators to determine remotely that the right sensor is in the correct location. Contrinex IO-Link washdown sensors additionally feature an on-demand self-test function that confirms error-free operation at all times. Systems designers also have the capability to modify the output signal. Sealed tubs of cheese are conveyed from filling stations in single lanes; pneumatic cylinders, mounted beside each conveyor, divert multiple tubs into packing areas in preparation for layering. In these situations, it is essential to control the position of the ram accurately; failure to synchronize cylinder extension with conveyor movement results in damage to products and, potentially, to equipment. Two M12diameter washdown sensors from the Contrinex Full Inox family, embedded in the wall of each cylinder, sense the presence of the ram as it reaches the limits of its travel in each direction. Modern technology in food production protects against foreign bodies in food and helps sort out defective products

It’s any food producer’s nightmare: a customer who finds or is injured by a foreign body in his food. While such risks can be reduced through good quality management, only efficient devices that can detect foreign bodies and mislabeling can guarantee absolute safety.

T

here is no legislation in Italy governing the specific search for foreign bodies in food. There are, however, numerous standards that are virtually equivalent to laws owing to their widespread use in the food industry. The International Food Standard (IFS) is just one of them.

for example, in heavily marinated pieces of meat or products wrapped in aluminum foil, which tem to work, the device have a high intrinsic conmust first ‘learn’ each new ductivity. product. This technology soon The problem is that this reaches its limitations if reduces the metal detecthe products to be tested tors’ detection accuracy, have what is referred to meaning that small impuas a ‘high product efrities cannot be detected fect’. This is the case, reliably.

Finding the culprits using a metal detector This is why a metal detector is now used in most businesses at the end of the process chain, just after packaging. It generates an electric field in its coil section. Any product passing through the detector leaves a specific pattern. Deviations indicate contamination and trigger the product’s rejection. For this sys18

X-ray technology is superior in many areas X-ray technology is immune to such disadvantages. It can detect even the smallest of metal particles, as well as stones. The principle: the detector absorbs the radiation and produces a greyscale image. Any foreign bodies in the food appear as black spots on the digital image due to their higher density. Modern X-ray detectors such as Bizerba’s product inspection system XRE are able to evaluate an image within a matter of milliseconds. Here, the con-

veyor belt can run through the device at a speed of 80 meters per minute, which corresponds to an inspection rate of around 150 packages per minute. Another advantage is that unlike many other devices, the distance between packages can be as little as ten millimeters. This makes an extremely high throughput possible. The device also can be adjusted to individual requirements. For example, manufacturers can specifically exclude deliberately used metal parts like aluminum clips on sausage

ends from the inspection. The X-ray system can also check jars and tins with a wall thickness of up to three millimeters for foreign bodies. The metal of the tin hardly interferes with the X-ray beam. Food packaging of this type cannot be checked using a metal detector.

ittle surfa al, p solv prob aesth tanc have steel varie thes vario men the a For you pecu less resis smo supe mec often polis chem whic troly

Eliminate labeling errors efficiently X-ray detectors are also able to analyze whether the contents of the packaging is complete. To do so, the machine is programmed with the average grey value of the object to be examined. Image processing then evaluates the results and at the same time checks the product for foreign bodies. The device finally forwards the inspection log to statistical software, which facilitates extensive analyses and precise documentation. In addition, the device can be combined with other equipment, such as a checkweigher. If the product is changed, the testing parameters on the X-ray unit also change accordingly.

he roots of MORRONE FOOD TECH (M.F.T. srl) date back to 1946 when Mr Giulio Raiola, Maurizio Morrone’s grandfather, started manufacturing foodprocessing machinery. During his first 40 years of activity, Giulio Raiola’s company establishes itself as leader manufacturer of processing equipment for the canning industry, namely tomato and peach processing. In the early 90’s Mr Raiola develops the first models of his peeler for apples, pears, citrus and kiwis, besides fruit cutters and other pieces of equipment that allow him to expand the company’s core business to the whole fruit-process-

ing industry, including the then-emerging sector of fresh-cut fruit products. In 2009, Maurizio Morrone takes over his

grandfather’s business and, besides developing the existing production range, he enhances research and designing

Ozone, pure strength.

All the goodness of taste, without unpleasant surprises. Ozone is a gas with high oxidising power, active against bad odours, flavours and germs. It decomposes after use and leaves no residues. De Nora, with the line De Nora NEXT ozone systems, uses the properties of ozone to ensure higher quality of agro-food products, extend shelf life and, at the same time, ensure healthier products for the end consumers. De Nora assists the Food & Beverage industry in the design, supply and installation of ozone plants, used with increasing success for: • extending products conservation in the storage, transport and distribution phases • ensuring safer foods reducing bacteria, moulds, yeasts, fungi and mycotoxins • improving the efficiency process water treatment • wastewater treatment • sanitising tanks, surfaces and equipment In the oenological field De Nora NEXT ozone plants are used for the sanitisation of steel, resin and cement tanks and/or oak barrels and casks in a safe, effective and economical manner.

“Our philosophy is very simple: Give our best for people who expect the best” (D.Z.)

n a country with food manufacturing potentials, food manufacturing has to be set as one of the pillars of technological and economical progress. PIGO set a goal to become an initiating force in technological and consequently economical progress in food processing industry, a leader in country and in the world in manufacturing of food processing machines from its program. Today, PIGO has established itself as a world-class leader in the design and manufacture of high technology freezing equipment and freeze dryers, as well as fruit and vegetable processing equipment, with an extensive experience in both freezing and fruit and vegetables processing. PIGO can proudly say that its machines achieve excellent operating characteristics and energy efficiency, while being user friendly, thus guaranteeing many advantages and privileges to the company’s buyers. Main products PIGO has specialized in building fluidised bed freezers, EASY Freeze, the most suitable for IQF freezing all variety of fruits, veg-

etables and numerous sea, meat and cheese products, redefining IQF Technology With Adaptable Air Flow. EASY Freeze technology is providing perfect shape of IQF product and no clumps - Full controlled fluidisation method keeps the product constantly suspended above the belt in a cushion of air. The result is the immediate crust freezing and efficient core freezing of individual pieces, regardless of type, variety or condition of product. Maximized freezing efficiency for each unique product, whether the product is heavy, light, soft, sticky or fragile, thanks to Variable speed control of all fans and belts, allowing onthe-fly optimization of air flow conditions. Interior video monitoring allows for real-time supervising of operating conditions,

allowing the complete control and adjustments of the entire process from outside, without necessity to entering into the freezer. EASY Freeze is considered as the freezer with the most superior sanitation, giving the possibility to user to freeze different products one after the other without risk of cross – contamination. EASY Freeze is ENERGY SAVING and TROUBLE FREE solution for all your freezing needs. Within the freezing equipment product line, PIGO also manufactures the innovative EASY Freeze SPYRO, the latest generation of spiral freezers giving utmost advantages to the users in terms of energy efficiency, hygienic conditions and advanced technological caracteristics, such as: • Belts gear motors are posi-

tioned outside the insulated cabin (no lubrication inside the freezer) avoiding any risks of contaminations due to some oil leakages; • The unit doesn’t have any mezzanine floor and or intermediary platform, to avoid any dirtiness accumulation (presence of any mezzanine floor or intermediary platform are making more difficult the cleaning operations) - the absolutely highest hygienic standards; • Freezer design is made according to max. thermal load and max. surface occupied on the belt by the different products foreseen; • Low maintenance cost and low spare parts cost due to utilisation of high quality commercial components; • Low pressure fans to higher air speed. In order to obtain a quick freezing process EASY Freeze SPYRO is designed for high speed circulation (4 -10 m/sec) of cold air in contact with the product, on the whole length of the spiral conveyor; • Very low weight loss, which is two times less then with vertical air flow. • Hitting the incoming product with the coldest air; the product is therefore immediately “crusted” and snow formation diminished; PIGO freezers are built in modular sizes and all components are

made entirely of stainless steel, capable to provide perfectly frozen product even for delicate products like cooked rice, raspberries, etc. PIGO also designs, fabricates and assembles sophisticated freeze dryers, EASY Freeze DRYER - LYOPHILIZER, product line which includes a broad range of standard and custom units. The freeze drying - dehydration technology allows to save delicate aromas while drying the frozen product under vacuum, producing premium quality product. Premium sensorial properties for finished product, absolutely superimposable to those of the fresh product. Machine execution is entirely in stainless steel (Chamber, doors, hinges, shelf modules, etc). In the EASY Freeze Drying concept Shelf modules and vapour condenser are contained inside chamber, giving as final result much shorter freeze drying time then any other freeze drying technology. Viewing ports are provided in the doors, allowing observation of both the vapour condenser and product trays during the drying cycle. Each unit is equipped with complete refrigeration plant of corresponding size, including also refrigeration condensing unit is purpose-built with capacity control to allow economical use of refrigerant. Includes condenser unit. Besides EASY

NEWS

Freeze, EASY Freeze SPYRO, and EASY Freeze DRYER- LYOPHILIZER, one of the company’s main machines is automatic Pitting machine PG103 having up to five times higher capacity than other pitting machines on the market. Experience of all PIGO’s clients confirms work with 0,00% of remained stones when adequate quality and preparation of the fruit (clean, calibrated product with adequate ripeness) is provided. PIGO systems are concepted to create a “High Added Value Fruit” production plant, which contains dozens of small innovations and a few large improvements for a more reliable system, all together also improving natural fruit characteristics. In the field of different drying technologies, PIGO is also providing CONTINUOUS INFUSION TECHNOLOGY and KNOW-HOW to it’s clients, giving possibility to improove also natural furit properties, as well as extended shelf life. To get a better idea of what PIGO does, please visit the website www.pigo.it or just send an e-mail to info@pigo.it, they will be very glad to send their detailed offer, and also a presentation with plenty of videos with its machines in the work. More than 87 years after its foundation, and with very high growth rates, Comoli Ferrari family business is devoted to its purpose: trust and fairness, based on dialogue with all its partners. Comoli Ferrari was established with a capital of 10,000 liras in December of 1929 by Stefano Comoli,

shift worker at Società Conti (now Enel), and Paolo Ferrari, employee at Ercole Marelli, as a small electricians firm with just three workers at the beginning. While the firm was developing as a building civil and industrial plants, a young employee was hired, Maria Luisa Bignoli, who was to became Paolo Ferrari’s wife in 1935. After the hard times of World War II, Ferrari considered the idea to become an electrical supplies wholesaler, so its building activity was given up in 1955, and the new business started

up. When Comoli died, Ferrari had to be the manager director of the company in the very moment of Italian great economic growth: he did it very successfully, indeed,by opening the first branch office in Biella in 1962. Then, Ferrari’s sons Giampaolo and Giuseppe, both engineers, entered the business and this led to a great market expansion in the 70s and the 80s. In recent years, with the opening of new branches, mostly by purchasing existing business units, Comoli Ferrari became a Stock Company, so the firm saw a great develop-

ment and consolidated its role in the Italian market. By always paying great attention to market needs, Comoli Ferrari has succeeded in having an important leading role in the Italian market. Today, its main target is to consolidate its market position consequently the Company implemented a business plan in order to acquire and merge existing small and medium-sized companies. This strategy turn out to be very vantageous to became a competitive multinational in Italy, hoping to be a leader company in this field in the near future. The purchasing

CANALFILÂŽ AND THE EVOLUTION OF STEEL CABLE SUPPORT SYSTEMS

I

n Italy and in all other European countries alike, in the past 10 years, steel cable supports have changed from typical niche item like cabling support broadly used in agrifood environments, into multi-functional support for cables, data, safety, and for modular cable systems. Canalfil cable ducts have been designed and built in such a way as to grant sound support to suspended cables as set by laying and mounting guiding lines. By using thinner steels, the structure of the cable ducts has become lighter and lighter, thus getting such weight-load ratio to grant excellent performance also in case of heavy duty.

their structure. Canalfil grants high-quality standards, since the most important elements combining to make the structure of the cable duct are: thickness of steel bars, their positioning, the quality of the seal at every intersection of longitudinal and lateral bars, which determine the rigidity of the duct.

Canalfil cable ducts grant sound support to suspended cables

The high-quality seal of lateral cables guarantees high resistance. Canalfil proposes a complete range of cable supports, which not only consists of straight paths for housing and possible retaining, but it can also

The performances of Canalfil cable ducts depends on load capacity, which is directly proportional to the rigidity of 50

be integrated with an extensive range of accessories, purposely studied to always offer engineers the most efficient and inexpensive solution. Construction materials range from electrogalvanizeds steel to stainless steel 304 and 316, decontaminated and pickled, depending on the environment where they are installed (indoor or outdoor, highly saline and humid areas, applications in chemical and food processes). Evolution. Constant search for solutions that may help to reduce costs leads to growing use of systems that enable quick installation. Canalfil cable ducts feature fast assembly system and are much easier to manage than traditional systems for they are lighter than other duct systems, require less manpower during installation and take up less space, which result into saving higher than 25% on traditional cable ducts. All support and retain systems, and accessories are characterized by

“FAST assembly, upon Canalfil study, made by metal flaps. To fix the Canalfil cable duct safety, we just need to fold the flaps on the steel bars by means of a screw. This way we saved time and money, and had to use neither screws nor bolts. The structure of the Canalfil cable duct is crucial to the saving factor; thanks to the mesh it is made of more than 90% of its perimeter is open and on account of that, the cables are as perfectly aired as if they were in the open air; this also allows the use of shorter ducts, bringing about money saving as well. Traditional cable duct systems require that all curves, changes of direction and level, are made with pre-formed elements, directly supplied by the producer, whereas Canalfil cable ducts are designed in such a way as to get all necessary special accessories in the factory. By means of asymmetric blade shears, it is possible to cut the cables near intersections and

this way the cable duct will result more easily customizable. Also the best projects sometimes need being revised at the moment of installation on account of unexpected circumstances. The possibility of tailoring a special ancillary product right at the production factory remarkably reduces the cost of installation and request of manpower to assembly the components at the facilities. By offering peculiar products suitable for any engineering project, providing them with steel cable ducts in different size and material quality, Canalfil means offering more service to electric plant sector. One of the points of strength is the quality of production and technical service understood as the cardinal features to business success of the producer and its clients. Further relevant aspect is certainly flexibility, necessary condition to meet the various requirements of the customers, who are often leaders in their respective sectors.

One of the latest successful applications has been a line to pack 500 cups/minute into corrugated board cartons, which are then collated and packed into RSC cases. The line is composed of a monoblock system (forming unit, closing unit and top loading robot integrated into one frame) and has proven to be extremely flexible. DIAPHRAGM PUMPS: HIGH dEMANdS ON PTFE dIAPHRAGMS fOR tHE BEVERAGE INdUStRY

D

iaphragms are critical components separating the media from inner workings of the pump. The diaphragm must be able to withstand high pressures, various media, fluctuating temperatures, abrasive particles and steam cleaning, all while maintaining the shape, flexibility and a tight seal. If a diaphragm fails, the pump could contaminate the media. The main indicator to evaluate a diaphragm for the food & beverage industry is

the stretch void index (SVI). It measures the voids or air pockets in the material after it has been flexed and indicates the potential for media to permeate into the PTFE. Permeation can sometimes occur with no visible damage to the diaphragm; however, it can weaken the PTFE, reduce the diaphragm life and create the potential for crosscontamination of the processed media, which must be prevented in the food & beverage industries at any cost, as this could contaminate a whole batch before it will be recognized by the quality controls. In terms of permeation resistance (SVI) and long cycle life, only the modified calendered PTFE has superior results. Flexing a diaphragm can create stress points; incorporating ribs in the PTFE and backing it up with rubber allows the material to flex

more easily thereby reducing stress and so improve diaphragm performance and ease of installation. The rubber backing should have a one-piece design for quick installation thereby reducing the potential for improper installation, such as having the wrong side facing the media. Another critical point in the hygienic design is the piston connecting the shaft to the diaphragm. Integrating the piston into the design of a diaphragm eliminates metal contact with the process media. This reduces the potential for cross-contamination, and makes it possible to be cleaned without any dead space. Overall, only a diaphragm made of modified calendered PTFE, with a one-piece rubber backing and the piston integrated into the rubber element can provide all needs for a hygienic process flow in the food & beverage industry.

success of the initiative. And as it has always happened for over 62 years, with the research and innovation’s that characterizes us, OCME will surely lead a protagonist role “. With specific regard to the OCME prototype, the goal was to focus on the architecture of the OCME Blox© system. The OCME Blox© system is not a single machine, rather it is a philosophy of design to facilitate compact production lines. The philosophy is based on greater co-ordination between all the OCME machines of the line, as well as well as reducing the number of interconnected pack conveyors. As for the latter, OCME has developed and perfected ‘Touchless’ technology, the use of brushless motor transport, without the requirement of photocells and physical guides, to allow for accumulation of product without physical contact between the packs. Over the years, OCME has developed for their engineering divisions, but also for the end customer,

the programming and simulation tools relative to the most critical parts of the machine. This involves a continuous effort to upgrade the software code management, because these products must keep up with the specific customizations made on each machine; in the case of OCME, the product is built around the needs and demands of the end user, these customizations can also be numerous and have a significant impact on the overall logic of operation. As well as programming / simulation tools being irreplaceable utility tools for development, these tools are also available locally on the individual machines. In the case of compact lines

Oscar Gerelli

Blox© this is a limitation because you cannot currently perform an accurate refinement of the parameters of each machine whilst observing the impact on the synchronization of the entire line. For this reason, one of the main objectives of IMPROVE will be to develop a utility tool with rapid use for the virtual commissioning of complete production lines, with different levels of refinement. Also they want to be able to perform optimisation processes aimed at energy saving and the identification of potential production problems, both during the development phase of the orders (for software

tion. The electronic safety on every gearbox allows at the machine to stop in case of overload. The heat exchanger and pumps are always made in stainless steel. Very high productivity and automation in the wash meet in the HP model in the same series. Despite the sophistication, just an operator to remotely manage the entire wash cycle, verifying operation via control systems. The tubes of external washing are constructed so as to reduce maintenance to a minimum. But in case it will be necessary, the dismantling and cleaning are very simple. The regulation of the temperature in the tanks is automated through

a modulating proportional pneumatic system, which offers a guarantee of accuracy and safety of operation. The main motor, oversized, ensures a long lasting efficiency by minimizing the mechanical wear. The electronic variable frequency allows to manage the main engines installed in HYDRA HP series via remote control. The automatic press for the collection of labels evacuated from the detergent bath is full of a recovery system of the detergent solution that accumulates in the pressing phase.

EQUIPMENT FOR TROPICAL FOOD PROCESSING

T

he standards for quality for tropical fruits are becoming more and more stringent. It is therefore mandatory that the equipment used for their processing be continuously updated in order to maximize the yield and quality of the juice / puree extracted. This is in fact the basis to keep quality in the subsequent operations of heat treatment, evaporation (when it occurs) and packaging. One of the way to meet the target of a good extraction is the use of dedicated machines for the various “families” of fruits having similar characteristics. On the contrary of the “Universal

machines” the dedicated juice / puree extraction machines are taylor made taking into account the peculiarities of the fruits: the good juice extraction from a passion fruit, for instance, is something of completely different from the extraction of juice / pulp from a pineapple. The use of dedicated machines avoids the compromises that, otherwise, has to be accepted. The use of dedicated machines avoids to a large extend the contamination caused by the peel to the juice / puree. This contamination can consists in color (for instance the purple variety of passion fruit, the chlorophyll of the

pineapple peel etc) as well as in the bitter / not palatable components as well as the pesticides and other chemicals. Bertuzzi Food Processing, a leading Italian Company operates since 1936 in the design and construction of machinery and plants for the processing of fruits and vegetables and has gained a wide experience in the field of tropical fruits processing for which has developed a number of specific, dedicated machines and technologies for the juicing of pineapple, passion fruit, acerola, dragon fruit, pomelo, banana, mango, guava, litchee, ranbutan, coconut etc.

DETECTABLE PLASTICS FROM IGUS FOR MAXIMUM SAFETY IN FOOdS

I

Magnetic, lubricant-free motion plastics aid in preventing foreign substances from entering foodstuffs

n the food and packaging industry, the highest safety standards apply. To protect consumers, food must be free of contaminants of any kind. As part of its ball and spherical bearing series, igus offers plastic products that are lubricant-free and at the same time, detectable. This guarantees that no lubricants and no plastics enter the production chain during operation or in the event of a system failure. In the plants of the food and packaging industry, metal detectors are now an industry standard. They detect any metallic conductive particles derived from the production environment. Subsequently, the products can be sorted out as soon as possible. But how can plastic particles be traced? That was the question that developers at Cologne-based motion plastics specialist igus asked

themselves. The solution was finally the development of a special high-performance plastic, which can easily be traced with standard metal detection methods. The material is used today in selected products in the igubal series, which includes rod end bearings and clevis joints, flange bearings, spherical bearings and pillow block bearings. Both the housing and the spherical balls are made of the detectable plastic. This characteristic is sought after in other areas of bearing technology. For example, xiros M180 is a lightweight polymer ball bearing, whose material is also detectable. Freedom from lubrication ensures additional safety In addition, these highperformance polymers do not require external lubri-

cation. “A central point in the production process of the food and packaging industry is the avoidance of contact of product and lubricants in the machine, points out Lars Braun, Industry Manager for Food and Packaging Technology at igus. A major contribution towards this is made by the lubrication-free and maintenance-free plain bearing materials from igus. Because, they precisely meet these requirements: materials like iglidur A181 or iglidur A350 need not be actively lubricated. Moreover they are compliant with the EC Directive 10/2011 and also with FDA specifications for repeated contact with food.

P.E. LABELLERS CONFIRMS ITS IMPORTANCE IN LABELLING MACHINES MARKET

2015

was a prosperous year for P.E. LABELLERS, it had reached many goals. One of these was to start a collaboration with LVMH, better known as Louis Vitton Moët Hennessy, is the global leader in the luxury wine and spirits sector with a widespread presence in over 140 countries. It has an unparalled portfolio

of brands represented by the most famous and celebrated champagne in the world like Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Ruinart, Dom Pérignon and Krug, together with Hennessy, the undisputed leader on the cognac market, as well as being an icon in terms of sophistication and luxury and some of the most renowned international luxury spirits, including Glenmorangie Single Malt Whisky, Ard-

beg and Belvedere Vodka. The move of this prestigious group towards P.E. LABELLERS steams from the intention to buy 3 labelling machines for a 15,000 bph champagne line with integrated optical orientation, label application quality control and sleeve formats with self-adhesive labels, which has completely changed the cold glue system currently used on the German machines in VC and MC Group. The solutions offered by P.E. LABELLERS consist of the MODULAR PLUS series with B-BULL orientation cameras, and P.E.-supplied quality inspection system; it also installed parts manufactured in France and improved touch-screen performance and a Quality Control System, as they were developed with the

customer’s operators, who provided their input on everyday practical operation. The result is that P.E. LABELLERS supplied a total of 3 machines to the Veuve Clicquot Group in Reims and 1 for the Möet et Chandon Group for their new cellar in Montaigu. The supplied labellers have helped increase the efficiency of the lines of the factory in Reims. The long development and customisation process of the Quality Control System and touch-screen have led to easy customer control of the machines and have helped P.E. LABELLERS achieve integrated systems that are closer to operator needs. 2016 has already begun with new synergies between LVMH and P.E. LABELLERS. Indeed, we were pleased to receive another 3 job orders for the Modular Top machines with the cold-glue selfadhesive labelling systems combined with our Maya sleeves, for Hennessy’s plants in Cognac. The trust is a confirmation and full reward for the results P.E. LABELLERS achieved in the LVMH group, which chose Italian-made

manufacturing by P.E. LABELLERS to package its important luxury products. P.E. LABELLERS can also underline that Laurent Perrier is another loyal customer. Founded in 1812 by André Michel Pierlot, today Perrier is one of the world’s most prestigious champagne brands; indeed, Laurent-Perrier is synonymous with style, freshness, lightness and elegance. Its product range includes a unique range of champagne (Demi-sec, Ultra Brut, Alexandra Rosé, Grand Siècle, Brut Millésimé, Cuvée Rosé, Brut) currently exported in as much as 147 countries all over the world. A loyal client of P.E. LABELLERS since 1996, with the latest labelling machine installed in March 2015 it completed its conversion to our technology: thanks to the commitment and services provided over the years by our French subsidiary Omme France, today all of Perrier’s bottling lines have a state-ofthe-art labelling machine by P.E. LABELLERS. The latest one installed is a MODULAR PLUS model with servomotors to rotate the plates and optical

fibre centring; five labelling stations, one of which is a glue station to apply the neck label and 4 60 m/min self-adhesive stations to apply the front label and back label with a non-stop system. Also Cognac Larsen is an important reference of P.E. LABELLERS. Founded in 1926 in Cognac in France, Cognac Larsen renowned for making the “Cognac of the Vikings” distributed in the whole of Europe, Asia and America - became part of the world-famous Altia Group in 2013. Thanks to the commitment of Omme France, in January 2015 Cognac Larsen purchased its first labelling machine by P.E. LABELLERS: a MODULAR PLUS 540 labelling machine with 3 self-adhesive stations and plate rotation with electronic cam, designed for the installation of a fourth labelling station, mechanical bottom centring and optical fibre. Despite its compact size, the flexibility provided by its modular structure and the servomotors with integrated electronics provide the client with the most extensive range of

combinations in terms of label application: indeed, the labelling machine is equipped to process as much as 23 different bottle formats at a speed of 5,000 bph, which covers Larsen’s entire product range. This installation allowed P.E. LABELLERS to enter in Altia Group, a leading wine and spirits company in northern Europe and the Balkans. In the domestic market P.E. LABELLERS has been a supplier of Distillerie Caffo: a company founded in 1915 by Giuseppe Caffo and based in Limbadi (VV). Over the years the company kept expanding in Italy and abroad: its first international subsidiary, Caffo Beverages Inc., was founded in New Jersey (USA) in 1999. In 2006 it acquired a distillery near Udine specialising in making quality grappa and then set up a company in Munich to expand on the German market. Its latest achievement, in 2013, was the management of production and sales of the Borsci plant of Taranto. Gruppo Caffo provides a number of specialities in terms of spirits and other

products, including: grappa, liqueurs, syrups, creamy liqueurs, sticks of liquorice and chocolate pralines, though its true pride and joy is the renowned “Vecchio Amaro del capo”. Distillerie Caffo has been a P.E. LABELLERS client for years and it currently labels its small-sized products with a P.E. LABELLERS labelling machine made as far back as 1978 and perfectly operational. In April 2015 it installed another cuttingedge MODULAR PLUS 960 14 labelling machine with built-in servo motors and 5 labelling stations: 4 60 m/min self-adhesive machines with a non-stop system to apply front labels and back labels and 1 cold glue machine, fitted with a hot-melt reinforcement system to apply L-shaped seals. Thanks to the versatility of this labelling machine, Distillerie Caffo can label almost all its products: “Il Vecchio Amaro del Capo”, Finocchietto, Limunì, Anice Caffo, etc.. Finally another reference acquised by P.E. LABELLERS is CollisRiondo has been an undisputed leader of viticulture in Italy with over 6,000

hectares of vineyards; one of the largest and leading wine-making establishments in Veneto and Italy, based in Monteforte d’Alpone (VR), its production includes Prosecco, Soave, Valpolicella, Ripasso, Amarone, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Garganega and Corvina, better known on the market with the following labels: Riondo (sparkling DOC and varietal), Casa Burti (generic sparkling), Casa Lunardi (still Veneto wines), Castelforte (premium still Veneto wines) and i-Riondo (Cocktails). In 2015 Cantina Riondo acquired a labelling machine from P.E. LABELLERS, mod. MODULAR TOP 1730 complete with 3 adhesive stations operating at a rate of 140 m/min and 2 operating at a rate of 90 m/min for the application of front labels, back labels, neck labels, hang tags or stamps, and “I” seal, this last element in non-stop mode (double station installed on removable trolley). The nominal speed of the machine is 250 p/m. A special feature of 140 m/min stations is the builtin non-stop system, with

automatic reel joiner, double reel-holder for unwinding and double winder. The 140m/min label applying unit with these characteristics, already installed by P.E. LABELLERS on other machines for 28,000 and 30,000 bph line productions, at Diageo and Suntory groups, is also equipped with a special programme for missing label recovery in the reel pitch. This is an important reference for P.E. LABELLERS in Northern Italy, as the supplied labelling machine is equipped with servo-

motors with integrated electronics for plate rotation and latest generation centring system, with 3 UV photocells on mobile support inside the turret (with run-up system). The advantage of this innovative spotting system is the physical format change limited to the centring supports. An additional innovation installed on the labelling machine is the bottle conveying system with universal starwheels, suitable for limiting the amount of equipment for different formats, thereby guaran-

BOTTLING

teeing considerable savings for all customers who need to work a high number of bottles with different diameters. A key feature is how this device, in comparison to ones available on the market, does not require any manual intervention for the adjustments to switch formats, in fact, the main characteristic is the capacity to adapt to the exterior dimensions of the body of the bottle being handled: pick-up is positive and performed with two supporting points, and is therefore also able to convey conical bottles.

What is new with the “Lees Stop”? The lees Stop is an “ad hoc” solution meant for filtering products with hing content in solids that replaces the traditional polymeric membranes of the cross flow filters with sinterized stainless steel membranes. Sinterization is a thermal process to which stainless steel powders undergo. High temperatures “weld” these powders together by heating them below their melting point. Thanks to several tests, we have verifired that this kind of material perfectly fits the cross flow filtration of difficult to treat products leading to products on the outlet with concentration up to 95% V/V. What are the advantages of this solution? Sintered Stainless Steel has a structure that guarantees high mechanical and chemical resistance that translates to high resistance to pressure, thermal shocks, impacts and chemical washing with high PH. Therefore a solution that lasts over time. The Lees Stop also allows the filtration of a broad range of products, from lees to industrial waste: in

BOTTLING

example, very good results have been achieved with producers of juices. If we take in consideration the knocking down of costs connected to disposal, the high quality of the filtrate, the full automation and the economical comeback from waste of the process, “Lees Stop” really represents the ultimate solution for who needs to filter efficiently and in innovative way products with and high content in solids.

turbidity inferior to 1 NTU. For those reasons VLS has created “UNICO”. Thanks to our filter it is possible to reach a perfect filtration of the product and shoot down the microbiological flora meanwhile saving the organoleptic characteristics or improving them sometimes. The filtering media that we are using can stand repeated regenerations with hot water and detergents and that means a long lifespan. Do you look only to the winemaking industry or to other sectors too? Absolutely to other sectors too. In example our PLUMA filter, another news introduced at SIMEI, is expressly meant for producers of fruit juices. Companies that need to filter their juices want to make sure of preserving their organoleptic characteristics by achieving an optimal filtration with a optimal microbiological shotdown. That is why VLS Technologies has created the PLUMA filter. Thanks to our microfiltration plant it is possible to reach an optimal filtration of the product and shoot down the microbiological flora. As for UNICO, the filtration media we use on the PLUMA filter can stand repeated regenerations with hot water and

detergents and thus achieve long lifespan. We have also introduced a new cooling plant for the cold stabilization of distillates and spirits. Quite always, after diluition, distillates like grappa, rum, brandy, cognac overgo cooling at temperatures inferior to 0°C depending on the alcoholic degree so to provoke the insolubility of oily substances that can affect the quality of the product and admit their asportation thanks to cold filtration. It is also guaranteed the subsistence of clearness at every condition and temperature to which the product is subjected during the cycle of distribution, storage and service. The VLS plant outstands for reliability, ease of use and cheapness of exercise. Reliability be-

BOTTLING

cause it is based on a system of refrigeration thanks to steam compression already tested on several applications in the beverage industry; it uses a scraped self cleaning surface evaporator that assures continuous operation and costant perfomance. Ease of use because, once turned on, the plant can work for several days without needing an operator to be there; it is supplied with instrumentation and automation that constantly check the operating parameters and assure the values by automatically intervening should variations of the product on the inlet or lack of it call the need for it. Cheapness of exercise because, as already stated, the system can operate without the presence of the operator; for the low installed power required; mostly for the presence of a plate heat recovering system that can recover about the 75% of the requested calories by getting them from the product already filtered and stabilized that comes from the outlet of the filter that is in the system and that would anyway need to be warmed before bottling.

the manufacturing of rotary stretch-blow moulders and is more robust, more compact, more flexible, more technologically advanced than the models of the previous generation, thanks to an array of technical innovations applied to the stretch-blow moulding process. Innovations that allow a precise descent of the stretching rod and an accurate control of its position at any stage of the blowing cycle, as well as remarkable energy savings. Moreover, the adjustment of the stretch-blowing speed is free from me-

chanical interventions (cams replacement), with the key benefit of dramatically reducing the stress generated by the vibrations the blowing wheel undergoes in traditional solutions. The EBS ERGON series features high performance, low dead volume valves, which have reduced the pre-blowing and blowing times with a subsequent major advantage in terms of machine’s efficiency and bottle’s quality. Easy and cost-cutting running, cleaning and maintenance The stretch-blow mould-

ing machines of the new EBS ERGON series stand out for their compact, ergonomic and functional frame, capable of considerably simplifying their management, cleaning and maintenance operations and of ensuring significant space saving within a bottling line. The safety guards of the new EBS ERGON blow-moulders feature a rounded shape, enabling more room inside the machine for cleaning and maintenance operations that the operator can carry out easily and safely. The ergonomics of SMI’s new blow-moulders is further emphasized by the advanced technology of the automation and control Motornet System®, which ensures the constant keeping of optimal working parameters during the whole production cycle and directly adjusts the machine’s settings, simplifying format changeovers.
