MOSH/MOAH MIGRATION AND FOOD SAFETY

Companies who pack food in recycled paperboard are facing a new challenge: to make sure MOSH/MOAH mineral oil does not migrate from paperboard packaging into the packaged food

W

hat is MOSH/MOAH? MOSH (Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbon), chain and ring-shaped.MOAH (Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbon), predominately alkylated polycyclic. MOSH and MOAH are mineral oils commonly used in industrial inks, notably for printing newspapers. Since newspapers form a significant part of the paper/carton recycling stream, recycled paperboard often contains a mixture of MOSH and MOAH. A potential health hazard if ingested. Draft regulations exist concerning the migration of MOSH into foodstuffs. Although not yet directly regulated, MOAH typically contains components that are known to be carcinogens. Recycled paperboard is used not just for the individual packs, but also for carton boxes used for distribution. MOSH/MOAH migration may thus remain a threat even when virgin paperboard and lowmigration inks, or even other types of non-barrier packaging are used. 4

EVAL™ EVOH, barrier against more than just MOSH/MOAH One solution is EVAL™, the world’s leading EVOH barrier resin by Kuraray. A layer of just 4 μm of EVAL™ provides proven protection against MOSH/ MOAH migration. Used as either an extremely thin coextruded coated layer on the paperboard or in an allplastic barrier liner, EVAL™ provides an oxygen gas barrier 10,000 times more effective than that of LDPE. EVAL™ is also an effective barrier against grease, organic substances and NIAS

(non-intentionally added substances) that may affect the packaged product at any moment of the production and distribution stream. EVAL™’s barrier works in both directions: flavour, aroma and grease are locked inside, oxygen, odours, NIAS and MOSH/MOAH are kept out where they belong. Tiny amounts of additional material add barrier function to the entire package, allowing the safe use of recycled materials. Freshness and shelf life are extended while ensuring food safety, avoiding product and packaging waste. Kuraray’s EVAL™ Technical Centre in Antwerp, Belgium can assist with packaging design, providing scientific compliance simulations for structures targeting MOSH/MOAH migration. Since the late sixties, Eurosicma has been playing a relevant role in the candy market, supplying high-performance flow wrapping machines for hard candies, jellies, chewing gums, bubble gums, toffees, pellets, lollipops, pralines and chewy candies. Nowadays, one single model is designed and developed for the entire candies and gums range of products: the flow wrapper EURO 77. Flexibility and modularity are two of the main features: a modular machine construction that can be combined with specific feeding systems according to the products to handle. Eurosicma offers the EURO 77 DS 900, equipped with customised cen-

trifugal disc feeder, depending on the product to feed. This application can handle up to five different kinds of product: hard candies, jellies, lollipops, pellets and choco-balls. The EURO 77 DS 900 actually reaches 2000 pcs/min, with stable and constant output in production over 1700-1800 pcs/min. Regarding chewing gums, bubble gums, toffees and products coming from rope Eurosicma’s best proposal includes Cut &Wrap feeding systems to be linked to the EURO 77 flow wrapper. There are two different configurations: the EURO 77 TIV, employing a scissor cutting system, specially designed for small size products and the EURO 77 TIR em-

ploying a continuous rotary cutting system, suitable for medium-long size products. Double rope feeding units are available for double colour applications. For small chewing gum slabs, Eurosicma can offer the EURO 77 aP or the EURO 77 DT Models with the dedicated feeding system starting from the big slab. The successive pre-cutting and then the separation device suitable to time the cut products into the chain conveyor of the flow wrapper, can be positioned in line or at 90°. Specific and dedicated feeding systems for balls in assorted colours are also available. Today the company is delivering the 700° unit of the EURO 77 series.

special

For more than 30 years, the company has been developing also feeding systems and wrapping machines for moulded chocolate and enrobed bars, bakery products such as biscuits, wafers, snacks, cakes, noodles, but also soaps, detergent tablets, tablets and many more. The company’s proposal for the flow wrapping is the EURO 88 Model, available in different configurations according to the specific costumers’ requests, from a simple stand-alone wrapping machine to a fully automated wrapping system integrated to the processing line. For biscuits, small cakes, enrobed and cereal bars, napolitans, irregular and sticky products, Eurosicma’s answer is the EURO 88 equipped with the high-performance and pressureless Feeding and Timing System hSF8, composed of 8 independently servo driven belts. Especially designed to handle “difficult” products at high speed, the patented system grants a gentle handling of products at an extremely low and monitored pressure. If required or needed, it can also avoid any contact and pressure be-

tween the products themselves. Such sophisticated feeding system is equipped with auto-tensioning and auto-centering belts’ system and allows an easy and fast tool-free cleaning for plates, belts and transmission rollers. The configurations with Double lane HSF Feeders are available to satisfy higher out-put. For biscuits to be wrapped in stacks, the flow wrapper EURO 88 UNIVERSAL can be connected to two different model of gravity feeders: the “P.W.F” Model and “V.M.” one, suitable to handle and feed mainly flat or dry biscuits. For plain, sandwich biscuits and crackers to be packed on edge in flow pack style, Eurosicma’s solu-

tion is the EURO 88 EDG version. This model is designed to be connected with a flight bar in-feed conveyor, to be linked “in line” or at 90°, accordingly to the end pack configuration. Depending on the requested out-put, a special application equipped with the twin flightbar conveyor is available. In order to reduce or even avoid any friction between the products and the feeder, Eurosicma designed multiple executions of the flight-bar conveyor. For biscuits, rice cakes and rusks to be wrapped on edge in fold pack style, Eurosicma proposes the EUROFOLD Machine Model, the first and the unique fully electronic and digital fold wrapper available on the market. Its main innovation is the Patented Rotary

Sandwiching machine Model SAMA 2 connected to the flow wrapper EURO 88

Wrapping Head composed of two parts only, one to infeed the slugs of products, coming from the conveyor, the other one for their simultaneous out feed. The longitudinal sealing devices are directly inside the rotary head and they can work during the whole rotation process. Thanks to its specific technology, the machine can grant tight packages, a gentle handling of the products, high-speed production, up to 100 packs per minute, and an easy and fast change size. Some of the optional available are the Tear Tape Application for easy opening and the Corrugated Carton Unit. For semi- or fully automated configurations, both the models EURO 88 EDG and EUROFOLD can be combined with the Eurosicma’s Automatic Portion Feeder Volumetric Version (APFV) available with different numbers of lanes depending on the volumes of production and the project’s characteristics to be satisfied.

For sandwich biscuits, Eurosicma can offer an integrated system composed of the sandwiching machine Model SAMA 2, and the flow wrapping machine model EURO 88. The two machines are controlled by the same industrial PC granting a perfect synchronization of the system and high levels of efficiency and output. Depending on the production quantities to be satisfied, Eurosicma proposes different models of sandwiching machine: the SAMA 2 model, suitable to handle up to 1400/1500 sandwich biscuits per minute and supplied with two lanes, and the SaMa 4, a four lanes sandwiching machine that can reach a production of approximately 2800/3000 sandwiches per minute. The cream tank, entirely in stainless, is designed to feed the cream to be portioned and is equipped with a jacketed water circulation system for temperature control, a shaker and a pump. In the latest version designed then stencil and the pump are

equipped with independent brushless servo-motor. For wafers’ flow wrapping, Eurosicma has developed special feeding system to reach high-performance requirements: the Side Transfer Feeders (STF). This is a servo-motorized device designed to transfer products from the multi-belts feeder into the chain of the EURO 88 wrapping machine. Eurosicma offers also the Soft Side Transfer Feeder (SSTF) that is the most advanced version of the STF feeder. This system enhances a gentle transfer of the products at a high speed thanks to the continuous movement of insertion and, at the same time, direct transfer into the chain of the wrapper. Both the SSTF and STF can be supplied in the double lane version. For wafers, enrobed chocolate bars and regular shape products coming long-side position from the production line, Eurosicma proposes the

EURO cF3 wrapping machines. This system is supplied with a 3-belts feeding system placed at 90° or 110° driven by independent brushless motors assuring a gentle handling of the product with an extremely and carefully monitored pressure. The feeding system allows to recover the empty spaces of the product flow, the automatic buffering of the products at a monitored pressure and then the progressive separation of the products in order to transfer them into the wrapper chain. Eurosicma’s portfolio includes also special carton feeder applications: the carton feeder from reel, an independent module integrated in the wrapper in-feed conveyor frame and available with auto-splicing unit, and the Pre-Cut carton feeder, where operators manually load pre-cut cartons. For enrobed bakery products, cakes and a wide range of products coming in rows and placed in flat position from the processing line, Eurosicma offers the high-performance distribution system Model SMaRT. Eurosicma can supply highly customized solutions according to the available working space and the

production speed, from single to multiple wrapping legs configurations. The real-time communication between the wrappers and the rows distributor assuring the auto-speed adjustment of the whole packaging line and the positive control of the products during all the wrapping process. The main advantage of the SMART unit is the continuous and dynamic feeding avoiding gaps between the distributed rows. To ensure top productivity, high performance accumulating and re-feeding systems are included in the portfolio. The LIFO accumulation systems are able to store the rows of product coming from the production line and deliver them back to the refeeding unit of the wrapping line. Both horizontal and vertical buffering systems are available. Specifically for instant noodles, Eurosicma proposes dedicated packaging solutions composed of the pressure-less and high-performance EURO 88 hSF8 Noodles Version complete with the sachet feeder for the cutting and the placing of the seasoning bags into the noodles’ packs.

The advanced innovations in this specific field assures some concrete advantages: • possibility of dosing one or more seasoning bags per pack at high speeds and maintaining the proper position of the sachets; • high performance “no noodle no seasoning bag” automatic function; • accurate empty sachet detection. Latest innovations • Special device to obtain the pack style so called “folded flow pack”. This application allows to obtain a cross sealing similar to the fold pack style, but with a better and longer shelf life. • Recently included in the portfolio, the MPF-MultiPack Feederis entirely designed and manufactured within the group. The fully automated system can be connected to the flow wrapper EURO 88 and it is able to orientate on edge the flow packs coming out from the primary flow wrapper, grouping them in the desired quantity and finally, thanks to the Pick & Place system, transferring the created portions directly on the chain of the multipack flow wrapper. LABELLING SYSTEMS FOR HIGH-PRODUCTION PACKAGING LINES

A

pplication of self-adhesive labels on high-production packaging lines requires adequate instruments and solutions. The experience developed by LABELPACK in this field has enabled the creation of a new version of the now celebrated LABELX series, equipped with two highefficiency hybrid step motors and enhanced electronic management that applies labels up to a speed of 90m/min, with very high frequency.

14

LABELX RM is equipped with a 400 mm diameter reel holder and 250 mm motorised rewinder. Electronic control is supplied from a separate control panel that can be installed in a remote position and equipped with a Touch Screen operator interface. Besides this essential solution for high-speed application, LABELPACK has developed more high-production solutions equipped with a NON STOP function that does not stop

special

the production line when the label reel has finished and throughout the time required to replace the new reel of labels, thus ensuring high efficiency of the line. This solution known as LABELX TWIN is equipped with two LABELX series labelling units, which are both installed on one structure, one of which is operating, whilst the second is on stand-by until the reel being processed reaches the minimum load. This is when an exchange signal is activated, which is managed electronically and automatically puts the labelling unit on stand-by and stops the unit previously operating, without missing any product passing through the production line. The operator can now easily intervene on the stopped machine, moving it away from the line thanks to

F

errarelle SpA, Italian mineral water bottling company, owner of the Ferrarelle, Vitasnella, Boario, Santagata and Natia brands launched Fonte Essenziale in March, a mineral water of thermal origin with beneficial effects on the hepatobiliary and intestinal systems, the most important of the waters administered at the Terme di Boario for hydropinic treatments. The problems and ailments related to liver and intestine are in fact widespread and particularly felt in Italy and, to help solve these difficulties, the company wanted to offer a remedy innovative in its simplicity: a natural mineral water with strong functional properties, recognized by the Ministry of Health with two special decrees. With a super premium positioning, Fonte Essenziale aims to be a natural mineral water particularly suitable to clean the liver, stimulate bowel motility and thus facilitate proper evacuation. Fonte Essenziale is a true innovation in the world of Italian mineral waters as a water intended for a selective individual con-

20

sumption, and not to the whole family, and a product with a proper “dosage. In order to feel its beneficial effects it is in fact recommended two glasses, of 400 ml, to be taken every day in the morning, preferably at room temperature and before breakfast. Such a distinctive market position needed a packaging able to express the core values of the new product, that is to say, the individual consumption at home and the specific functions for the liver and intestine, and at the same time, communicate the fact of belonging to the category of mineral waters as well as the absolute purity and naturalness of the product. The choice was for the 1 liter PET bottle usually tied to the on-the-go consumption, so that 6 pack bottles may allow an individual treatment of 15 days, period in which you experience the effects on the liver and intestines intaking the recommended quantity of water, according to studies and research done. That is why the designers of P.E.T. Engineering began designing the packaging from the analysis of the context of use, the kitch-

en, and from the glass, which becomes both the tool for drinking and a measurement unit for the proper dosage, as reported on the label. The designers were inspired by the simple geometry of tableware glasses coming to a essential and clean shaped packaging, with no decorations, but at the same time elegant and delicate. The use of a transparent preform, thicker than the rest of the 1 liter PET bottles on the market, has allowed to obtain a full gloss and a transparency similar to those of glass, the material used for premium bottles of the ho.re.ca sector, offering also a consistency to the touch that enhances the distinctiveness of the new Fonte Essenziale. The purity of the material, its flat base, the thin label attached to the lower part of the bottle, enhanced by the creative look&feel of the brand developed by Life Comunicazione strongly express the values and the preciousness of this water of a unique positioning. www.petengineering.com

he 2015 campaign motto of Jowat SE “Think differently better bonding” is also the headline for the enterprise’s participation at FachPack. On this trade show, Jowat will present new, innovative adhesives with a high potential benefit and that support manufacturers and packaging service providers in making processes more reliable. Detmold, August 11, 2015 – At FachPack 2015, Jowat is positioning itself as problem solver that can think differently when it comes to bonding issues. Some examples of solving such tasks will be presented. Innovative adhesives are an important factor for reliable processes in the packaging industry. However, manufacturing conditions change fast and Jowat is constantly optimising products and improving its competence in technical support, to meet the new challenges. Additionally to the new foil lamination adhesives, Jowat serves all current applications in the packaging industry with the right product, whether hot filling or deepfreeze products, barrier function or cut-out window bonding, demanding finishing steps for product presentation or outer packaging with complex designs.

specific adhesives. The current products of the group of Jowacoll® dispersions provide the choice for the packaging manufacturers to either apply the foils to the inside, possibly also as barrier function, or to the outside, with optimum surface effects all-over.

This property along with the broad range of adhesion and a high, flexible strength makes this adhesive a reliable process supporter.

These adhesives are specially designed for laminating pretreated OPP, PVC, and acetate foils on printed or unprinted papers and carton. They meet food contact regulations, are free of APEO and plasticizer, and are one-component adhesives with high durability and an excellent highgloss effect.

Folding box manufacturing NEW: Window lamination Foil lamination of cut-out windows is another application that requires

Secondary packaging NEW: Packaging with display and removal openings – Shelfready packaging with 180 ° flap bonding requires high tack. The new shelf-ready packaging for various end products, especially from the food industry, is highly demanded, but difficult to manufacture. The challenging part is the 180 ° folding at the removal cut-out on the front of the box to avoid sharp edges. This kind of fold on outer packaging units, like special trays, is a new trend. Due to their excellent initial strength, Jowat hot melt adhesives can easily withstand the high restoring forces of these cardboard folds. 25

Product packaging NEW: Barrier function for folding boxes Currently, Jowat is already supplying adhesives that were specially developed to bond recycled cardboard with a barrier function against mineral oil migration. Developing the appropriate adhesive for the coated surface of these boards, requires from the adhesive chemists not only a high level of competence, but also the ability to “think differently. These boards can have a very heterogeneous surface structure due to the high content of waste paper and the barrier coating applied. Nevertheless, these boards have the potential to become established as the standard product because waste paper is a very accessible raw material that also provides economic advantages over the use of virgin fibre paper. www.jowat.de/en/ www.jowat.de/thinkdifferently

erlikon Leybold Vacuum exhibits food processing vacuum solutions at the CFIA Rennes, France and the ANUGA Foodtec, Germany. Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum is supplying the Food Processing Industry with advanced vacuum solutions. Apart from applications in Food Packaging, other food applications including Vacu- um Baking and Freeze Drying are gaining more and more momentum, now requiring increased focus on fast and energetically effective vacuum solutions that are replacing aging and high- maintenance equipment at older food processing plants. Beginning in 2015, Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum received a larger order from a Swiss equipment manu30

facturer. The company is a world leader in food technology and developed various methods of food processing under vacuum, providing substantial improvements in product and process quality. The pump models made by Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum will be implemented in the freeze-drying system of a German supplier who produces twenty tons of instant coffee powder per day. Modern vacuum pumps with their very compact design, high efficiency and the possibility to use an external frequency converter such as the RUVAC WH series match the requirements of the customer to an extremely high degree. These pumps can be integrated e.g. in current freeze drying

system leading to a considerable savings on energy cost. At the same time these pumps delivers a higher pumping speed which will give the customer a much needed upgrade in their production with in- creased flexibility. Other food processing manufacturing processes also profit from the advantages of applying modern vacuum technology, as seen in the vacuum conditioning of industrial bread baking. Here, simple physical principles are applied. At atmospheric pressure, water boils at 100 °C. Decreasing the atmospher- ic pressure decreases the boiling point. If the pressure is at 42 mbar, the water already evaporates at 30 °C, the energy necessary for baking stems from the still

almost warm oven baked product. If the baked goods are subjected to vacuum cooling, this is done in 2 - 6 minutes, with the steady withdrawal of the water content preventing a possible condensation, the so-called gelatinization within the prod- uct. This vacuum-based baking technology offers significant advantages for plant manufacturers, produc- ers, bakers and consumers. While customers can purchase perfectly baked products almost around the clock, manufacturing and distribution channels are saving money, as significant cost reductions are possible in logistics, plant foot-print and in streamlining work economics. Depending on the plant design, cost reductions may reach 50%.

GERNEP ROLLINA and ROLLFED, the specialists for economical wraparound labelling applications use a sophisticated and closed hot melt system which avoids the contamination of the glue by foreign substance and reduces the cleaning and maintenance efforts to a minimum. The hot melt system of the GERNEP ROLLINA is applying hot melt onto the containers by using an economical contact-less spray system. The glue application of the trailing end happens by a stepless adjustable end gluing ledge directly at the label magazine. Also the glue application system of the ROLLFED is working

on the same high technical level by using a similar spray nozzle system. The hot melt is applied contact-less and selective at the label beginning while it is transferred on the vacuum drum. The glue application on the trailing end is done by a stepless adjustable end gluing ledge and accordant fend gluing plate on the application drum. The convenient control of bottle rotation offers a changeover to other container formats within a minimum of time.

GERNEP cOMBI and GERNEP SOLUTa, the all-rounder for unlimited equipment features These two rotary labeling machines are especially designed to match the constantly increasing demand for flexible and diverse container decoration in the beverage, food and pharmaceutical industries. flange area, which is blow moulded into the PET cans and can be hermetically sealed with standard metal lids, withstanding an internal pressure up to 7.0 bar, using the double seam closure. The technology is based on the proven ‘two-step cold pre-form’ blow moulding process, used to manufacture PET bottles in filling plants. The technological process uses specially designed and patented elements (see Patents) enabling continual production of high quality PET cans with a flange that enables the use of the proven double seam closure. The ‘two-step cold pre-form’ technology consists of two production stages, Injection Moulding of Pre-forms and Blow Moulding of PET cans: • Pre-form The pre-forms are produced by injection moulding. The ready, cooled pre-forms are subsequently packed on special designed and patented ‘pre-form

With the new machine from the BEUMER stretch hood model range, users benefit from improved system performance and a higher level of availability.

Smaller, faSter, more practical BEUMER has developed a new machine from the BEUMER stretch hood model range.

A

s a single-source provider for filling, palletising and packaging technologies, BEUMER Group supports its customers in all respects supplying sustainable solutions from a single source. The BEUMER stretch hood A sees the intralogistics specialist from Beckum redesign its tried-and-trusted packaging system from scratch. During the development, our specialists analysed various components and optimised them in terms of function, arrangement and ergonomics. This includes an intuitive menu system on the machine control via a soft-touch panel, an optimised, ergonomically designed workplace for the operator and

38

material-friendly transporting of the film in the machine thanks to an innovative film transport system. The new system also features improved system performance and needs far less floor space. For companies in the construction material, chemical or food and beverage industries, the topic of safety when transporting and storing palletised products has been becoming more important. This is what prompted BEUMER to develop a new machine in its proven BEUMER stretch hood model range that offers even more practical and safer handling for the user, compared with other machines in this model range. To facilitate work for maintenance staff, and thus

ensure higher machine availability, the new BEUMER stretch hood A is accessable without a platform and steps. Maintenance work, such as changing the blades, or the sealing bars, are now handled at floor level. The operator opens a drawer for these activities, providing free access to blades and sealing bars. The machine is automatically brought to a standstill to protect the operator. This removes the need to move subassemblies to maintenance position. Due to this rapid access capability, maintenance work is accelerated, and the risk of accidents and malfunctions minimised. The machine’s ergonomics have also been consistently advanced. With just a

few actions, and completely without tools, the operator can feed in the film. This means substantial reductions to tooling and conversion times. Additional benefits include the compact design of the BEUMER stretch hood and the resulting low height and small footprint. An innovative, material friendly film transport system feeds the previously created film hood into the system. On its way to the crimping and stretching unit, the sealing seam on the film hood cools down so that it can be crimped without loosing time. This removes the need for an energy-intensive cooling unit and time-consuming cooling. The pallets can be packed in a shorter cycle time thus reducing idle times, while at the same time ensuring improved packaging performance and less energy consumption. The developers have also improved the human-machine interface to offer an even more ergonomic workflow to the user. For this, the intralogistics specialist has introduced the BEUMER Group Human Machine Interface (HMI), a newlydeveloped operator panel with an optimised user interface and graphical navigation. This easily understandable and intuitive interaction concept helps to define efficient working sequences. The operator can control the machine safely with only a little training saving time and money, which ensures high economic efficiency. The soft-touch panel uses pictograms to guide the user through the machine control menus. The panel also gives the operator access to all required training programs. The system is controlled by a Siemens SIMATIC S7-300. Energy-saving motors and low compressed air requirements ensure a favourable energy balance. The compressed air requirements have been significantly reduced compared with the previous model. With its U-shaped frame design, the BEUMER stretch hood can be easily connected to existing conveying systems. Removing the need to interrupt the conveying system also guarantees smooth conveying performance for the pallets and stability of the palletised goods. The BEUMER stretch hood can be equipped with the BEUMER OptiStretch system. The crimping bow, made of highquality steel, swivels in even closer to the package, thus substantially improving the controlled application of film to the package. This improves system availability and enhances the visual appearance. The palletised goods are clearly visible through the smooth surface of the transparent, highly flexible film. Film packaging protects the goods against atmospheric influences, water, dust and insects and transport safety is substantially improved. To be able to process various films, and implement a variety of packaging processes, such as understretch or high-rack stretch, the new system can be equipped with the BEUMER multistretch system. In addition, the operator receives an eLearning program via USB stick for this system. This way the employees can train themselves immediately in operating the new BEUMER stretch hood A. This ensures a flexible and rapid familiarisation with the system. www.beumergroup.com.

TECHNE GRAHAM PACKAGING COMPANY 30 Years of experience in extrusion and blow-moulding for food products

T

his year will be the 30th anniversary of TECHNE as a manufacturer of extrusion and blow-moulding machines. Throughout the years, thanks to its capability to innovate and to adapt its range of high reliability machines to the final users needs, the company has reached an incontestable position of leader on the packaging market, especially into food products. TECHNE is a consolidated partner of all the main dairy companies all over the world and for sure one of the application that made these collaborations a success is its aseptic blowing technology for UHT products, which is part of its history as the first unit was launched in Italy 23 years ago. Since then, a lot of complete lines have been supplied and the process is still more reliable and consolidated.

40

The main advantage of this technology is the complete absence of any chemical agent used during the process and therefore any eventual residual of liquid into the bottle (azote peroxide), which eliminates the risk of having some taste alteration of the final product after the filling process. Last generation aseptic full electric machines are jewels of technology, with 3 or 6 layers extrusion heads and capability to produce 1L UHT milk bottles up to 9.000 units per hour.

ADV4-700-A Aseptic - Full electric machine TECHNE ADV-700 combines high production to high technology. Its presence on the market since 2007 makes it one of the most reliable and advanced model available. With its double and four shuttle configu-

rations, it is the perfect match for the end users and converters who look for a machine with medium to high production capacities. Its 700 mm stroke allows to produce containers from 120 ml to 5L up to 6 layers.

special

FACH PACK

PACKAGING

TECHNOLOGY

Full electric systems offer great advantages in terms of electric consumption and ordinary maintenance. It is proven that the average saving related to the machine consumption is around 35% compared to hydraulic units. The kWh per kg of plastic extruded drops from 0,45 to 0,31 in monolayer configuration and from 0,48 to 0,33 with the multilayer. The absence of any hydraulic system warrantees a clean production environment, a reduction of the overall noise and lower cooling needs of the machine as there is no hydraulic station (35%). It eliminates the problem of draining the used oil every 6.000 hours, reducing the ecologic impact on the environment. Finally, it increases the safety for operators, with no risk of accident due to unexpected movements while doors are opened, spite all safety systems present in the hydraulic machines.

INTEGRATED BLOW-FILL MACHINE An integrated solution for food products Back in 2012, TECHNE was introducing to the market a new machine concept, which was able to combine the process of blowing and the complexity of filling bottles with a significantly higher efficiency, being a synchronized mono-bloc unit. Today, more than ever, there is a necessity to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) and to optimize process to reach a high reliability with “state of the art” machines. These benefits have been recog-

nized by professional users which have subsequently chosen our integrated lines. Available for ESL and fresh products, the highly flexible range of machines sizes covers the production of containers from 180 ml to 5L, with a dedicated focus for single serve bottles with cap or alu-foil closure. Particularly suitable for liquid food

products such as dairy but also for fruit juices, sauces and other liquid foods, TECHNE was one of the first manufacturer to launch full electric machines, which ensures high repeatability of the produced bottles keeping dimensional accuracy at its highest level compared to alternative EBM machines. In addition, it will guarantee an oil free environment, hence reducing

contamination risks and subsequently providing a user friendlier line. Flexibility at its best ; UNIKA can handle containers produced in monolayer or with barriers for light and oxygen up to 6 layers. Value creation ; UNIKA allow the immediate conversion of packaging material and liquid food in a final product without intermediate stock and subsequent faster added value creation. Other significant benefit of UNIKA, besides providing remarkably lower consumption and lower mainte-

nance costs, is a faster return on investment (ROI).

ENGINEERING AND COMPLETE LINES The expertise of a professional partner TECHNE 30 years of engineering experience assures to its partners the most suitable technology for the production of plastic liquid containers. In the context of a complete production line where a lot of parameters have to be calculated and taken into consideration, working

with a reliable supplier is the key to success. Calculating the size of a cooling system or a compressed air line, choosing the right sizes of scrap grinding unit and raw material dosing system, combining other packaging processes such as labelling, filling, cartoning or bagging are some activities which requires the maximum attention and technical skills. Proper interfacing with the downstream part of the line is of key importance and an aspect that TECHNE manages in close collaboration with customer-selected suppliers to eliminate during assembly and start-up any technical imperfection which could undermine the efficiency of the complete line and to be sure that all the units are perfectly synchronized. TECHNE thanks to its long standing engineering experience offers a proper line design service, which can be applied in existing factories or completely new production facilities. Solutions are tailor made to suit customer’s expected results in terms of efficiency for today and for the future. Yet design is only the first step of the Engineering process, after accurate analysis of technical details, TECHNE proceed to an actual installation, taking care of all constructive, system and logistical aspects according to a planned timetable defined during the project analysis. TECHNE Engineering provides the perfect response to the industry pressing demand for effectiveness and efficiency, thus ensuring the plant runs reliably – always. All around the world, in the last 20 years, a lot of consolidated lines have been successfully supplied and installed, especially in the food industry, not only for aseptic products in all the main dairy companies but also for fresh products in smallmedium companies in particular with some interesting solutions in direct filling.

materials, ranging from PP and PET to bioplastic PLA straps. The company will be announcing other highlights shortly before the trade show opens. At this year’s FachPack, Mosca strapping experts will once again be demonstrating the outstanding quality of their machines. The display includes versatile entry-level machines that guarantee high quality and excellent results. “The EVOLUTION MP-6 was one of the first models to offer customers the benefit of our shared component concept - and we are continuously standardizing the core components,” says Mosca CEO Timo Mosca. All three versions of the EVOLUTION MP-6 share the same strap

dispenser, feeding unit, strap magazine and strap guide frame. This is what enables modular construction. “Using identical components lowers our production costs and we pass these savings on to our customers. This is how we guarantee Mosca quality at cost-effective prices.” All EVOLUTION MP-6 machines are factory equipped with Mosca SoniXs ultrasonic technology. The tensile strength of the welded seam is up to 80% of the strap material strength. The welding process is efficient with low emissions. The EVOLUTION MP-6 table model can be manually operated. Thanks to its compact design, it fits into smaller pro-

duction areas. A rotating user panel makes it accessible from both sides. This offers real advantages during peak production times for corrugated cardboard processors, wholesalers and mail-order businesses. The table model comes in eight different frame sizes, up to a frame width of 1650 mm. As an alternative, the EVOLUTION MP-6 is available as fully automated model in versions with a belts or rollers conveying system. Both come in three sizes with a frame width up to 1000 millimeters, and can be easily integrated into existing production lines. The Standard-6 strap path featured on all three models ensures easy accessibility, which makes maintenance, cleaning and repair simple and fast. high-performance system, affordable price The fully-automated LCU pallet packing press is an entry-level pallet strapping model, often used for frequently changing, low volume production runs. tion and secures the load for transport. These strap positions are based on Euro pallets and can be set to 440 or 625 millimeters. For high-output operations, Mosca equips the LCU with two SoniXs ultrasonic sealing units. An easy-to-install conveying system is available upon request. The LCU also comes with an optional BSG-3 strap sealing unit, which eliminates time-consuming strap coil changes. This minimizes down time and makes the operator’s job much easier. An optional Zero Energy State system (ZES) enhances safety. If the machine’s power supply is interrupted, the compression plate moves into a fixed position and is secured: no energy is required. The plate can be easily put back into operation when power is restored. ZES is a service mode that can be switched on or off as needed. No strapping without straps Mosca has been producing tear-proof PP and PET strapping materials since 2008 in one of the most modern facilities in Europe (Odenwald-Muckental). Multiple extrusion lines operating simultaneously produce straps in widths from 5 to 15 millimeters. These materials can be used in all strapping machines, regardless of type or manufacturer. “We are constantly working to

achieve customer-oriented solutions,” says Mosca. “For instance, our production facility in Muckental meets our customers’ growing demand for sustainability. We operate our own photovoltaic system to produce all of the energy we need to make PET straps.” The company is also expanding its range to include PLA straps. These bioplastic straps are made of renewable raw materials and can be composted after use. Trade show visitors can test all three kinds of straps at the Mosca booth. captions EVOLUTION The three EVOLUTION MP-6 models - table, belt and roller - are equipped with the Standard-6 strap path and use SoniXs ultrasonic technology for efficient, low-emission strapping LcU Cost-efficient and reliable, Mosca’s fullyautomated LCU pallet packing press offers a number of optional features to meet customer specifications Straps Mosca not only produces strapping machines - it also makes the plastic straps. Increasing efficiency, availability and redundancy.

A

t the FachPack 2015 trade show in Nuremberg, Gerhard Schubert Gmbh is presenting the prototype for a TLM packaging machine without an electrical cabinet. The reduced electronics further lower the maintenance costs of Schubert’s robot-supported packaging machines. Efficiency, availability and

commonality of parts for the systems set an all-new benchmark. Once again with this innovation, Schubert have followed one of their key guiding principles - that of reducing complexity.

of the TLM machine frame. Since the servo modules of the machine without an electrical cabinet belong within a decentralised control architecture for TLM robots, they no longer require an electrical cabinet.

An obvious sign of the elimination of traditional electronics for the packaging machine is the smaller head

The number of electronic parts has been greatly reduced, leaving only a few components. At the same time,

the operation and maintenance of the machine are easier than ever. Customers can therefore take on their packaging tasks based on more user-friendly automation implemented through virtually uninterrupted operation with minimum personnel input. The machine’s remaining components are equipped with a water cooling feature, which increases the life of the electrical equipment. Moreover, it reduces the system’s waste heat. With a heat exchanger, the customer can make use of the energy from the water cooling. Yet another plus in terms of energy is that Schubert uses drive systems with energy recovery - as with all TLM systems. At the show, the machine’s functionality will be demonstrated through a pick & place process, whereby four-axle TLM F44 robots will take white and black bears from a white product belt and then place them on Transmoduls in a specific formation. White bears on a white background - the vision system can detect the products in spite of the very lowcontrast environment, thanks to Schubert’s new scanner. The Schubert 3D scanner brings spatial vision to life. The vision system uses the data from the scanner to calculate a height profile and therefore the three-dimensional shape of the products to be packaged. This eliminates the generation of ghosting images through dirt or product residues on the belt. In addition, the 3D-scanner can detect defects - for instance, if a brown sandwich biscuit with brown cream is missing its cover section. Defective products such as these will be removed from the packaging process. Thanks to the 3D scanner, image recognition is effective and more accurate. Customers from all business sectors will benefit from less waste, higher productivity and improved quality.

With uniform product density, the TLM vision system can even detect the weight of each product. This enables individual product formations to be made up within a defined weight range during a grouping process. Depending on the application, the manufacturer can therefore save up to three per cent in raw materials, since less over-production is required to meet the legal standard. Target vs actual comparisons are also possible for stacking height and stacking length in the case of upright box filling. On screens at the stand, Schubert will also be providing indepth information on other TLM systems, its thermoforming technology and its filling systems for liquid cosmetic products. Customer examples will clearly illustrate the use of these technologies. At the FachPack show, Schubert will be exhibiting with its new trade fair concept for the first time. The stand architecture and exhibition graphics accentuate the brand’s innova-

tive power with a striking diagonal line design. Whereas the new TLM machine without an electrical cabinet is being presented in a bright environment, the stand is otherwise decorated in muted grays, offering visitors a pleasant and high quality of stay.

Gerhard Schubert Gmbh The Gerhard Schubert GmbH is a family-owned business with currently 1,050 employees worldwide. Schubert builds highly flexible packaging and filling machines as well as thermoforming, filling and closing machines for products of any type and industry. TLM systems from Schubert are conceived to pack any product simply and transparently. The letters TLM stand for Top Loading Machine. Schubert also offers an extensive service programme to complement its TLM packaging machine systems.

BRUKER OPTICS – FT-NIR SOLUTIONS FOR FOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY

THIS INNOVATION WAS HONORED WITH THE “INTERNATIONAL FOODTEC AWARD 2015” IN SILVER. The LSM adds the capability to the MPA for the analysis of raw milk samples. It is fully automated, including cleaning and can handle liquids from whey to ice cream pre-mix.

Q

uality control requirements for food production and food processing are constantly increasing. Modern FT-NIR spectroscopy presents the industry with many possibilities for fast and simple quality control in the laboratory and can also be used to monitor the production line directly. The new-generation analytical instruments are easy and intuitive to use and even enable shift workers to carry out analyses alongside production. Fast analysis is beneficial at every stage in the production chain because errors made at one specific point often impact on the final pro58

duct. With FT-NIR, manufacturers can: • analyse samples from tankers quickly, prior to unloading, and therefore reject any deliveries that do not meet specifications; • identify raw materials before use and quantify and assess their properties; • conduct on-line quality control at important production steps and prior to bottling; • check food is fit for human consumption. The following examples demonstrate some of the possible uses of FTNIR spectroscopy technology in the food industry.

Analysis of milk and dairy products On account of seasonal and regional variation in the composition of raw milk, it is essential for all subsequent processing steps that the milk will be standardised. FT-NIR spectroscopy analyses the key parameters, fat, protein, dry matter and lactose, with accuracy comparable to that of conventional mid-infrared systems (FT-IR). Using the LSM (liquid sampling module) – a sample feed with optional homogenisation and automatic cleaning routines – samples are simply pumped into a temperature-controlled transmission-flow cell, where they are measured.

Process Analytical Technology

MATRIX-F

FT-NIR Process Spectrometer

The online spectrometer MATRIX-F allows contact and non-contact measurements in reactors, blenders, pipes, bypasses and even over conveyor belts.

MPA

FT-NIR Lab Spectrometer

Designed to provide maximum flexibility, the Multi Purpose Analyzer MPA is ideal for the at-line method development and routine QA/QC work in the laboratory.

Today, many companies are not only striving to manufacture high quality products, but also increase production efficiency by installing the analytical systems directly into their production plants. This improves process verifiability and process understanding and gives the company the opportunity to optimize material use, run-time of machines and quality of the products up to real-time-release. Bruker´s spectroscopical technology based on modern FT spectrometers can be used at a lot of different process steps and offer high amount information to gain better process knowledge. The robust design of all spectrometers enables usage in tough conditions in production plants with very low maintenance costs/times.

Any kind of milk, e.g. raw milk, skimmed milk or UHT milk, can be analysed, as well as other liquid dairy products including cream, condensed milk, liquid ice cream, flavoured milk products and concentrates, i.e. even viscous products that conventional milk analysis instruments struggle to measure. Another advantage of FT-NIR spectroscopy is that one single piece of equipment can be used to measure not only liquid samples but solid and paste-like products too, including cheese, powdered milk and yogurt. This allows for the cost-effective analysis of different quality parameters in all relevant products, ensuring quick quality control at the individual stages of production.

Quality control of frying oils Deep-fried foods, such as chips, fish products, doughnuts and crisps, have become a substantial part of our diets today. This calls for a quick and simple method for closely and continuously monitoring the degradation in quality of deep-frying oil and thereby detecting harmful byproducts that develop from oxidation and polymerisation in particular. Various criteria are applied to determine when the oils need to be changed. For instance, the total polar materials (TPM) and polymerised triacylglycerol (PTG) levels are defined using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Regulations in many EU countries state that a deepfrying oil should contain below 24-27 % TPM, and 16 % PTG. However, no single parameter can be considered conclusive. A variety of tests should always be consulted to measure the by-products resulting from both oxidative and thermal processes in the oil before a valid conclusion can be drawn. Using FT-NIR spectroscopy, these parameters, as well as other important readings such as acid value and Anisidine value, can be established from one single measu60

FT-NIR was included in the DGF standard methods (DGF C-VI 21a) last year as a screening method for the analysis of deep-frying oils. Many other important quality parameters for fresh, unused deep-frying oils and other cooking oils, such as olive oil, can be analysed using FTNIR. Besides the iodine value, the

trans-fatty acid content and the acid value, the various fatty acids can be quickly identified too.

Solutions for the meat-processing industry With global demand for meat and meat products continuing to grow, it can be a challenge to always de-

liver the quality that customers expect. FT-NIR technology, which can produce analysis results in less than a minute, has the capability to complete, or even replace, a wide range of conventional quality assurance testing procedures for meat and meat products, both in the laboratory and on the production line. For example, it is very important for sausage manufacturers to determine the often variable fat content in their meat supplies when planning subsequent production steps. Furthermore, the fat content is a common criterion for value-based payment to suppliers. In this respect, FT-NIR spectroscopy represents a valuable tool for assessing the raw materials going into the product. The parameters of fat, protein and water can be determined simultaneously using just one measurement. The results can be used as a basis for decisions about production procedures. In sausage production, there is a legal requirement to define the maximum water content, minimum pro-

tein content and total fat content. The salt level is also of particular interest to the manufacturer and consumers as well. FT-NIR has proven itself to be an efficient method of analysis for measuring levels of moisture, fat, protein and salt in the different sausage varieties. Additionally, water activity (aw-value) can be analysed to optimise the product’s shelf life.

and even over conveyor belts. Up to six sensors can be multiplexed by a single MATRIX-F FT-NIR spectrometer. One example is the monitoring of the milk powder process. The key points in the spray drying process can be monitored by installing sensors e.g. in the storage tanks, the inline feed of the spray dryer as well as at the powder outlet of the fluid bed dryer.

Monitoring Food Processes Online

Why FT-NIR?

FT-NIR spectroscopy is however not restricted to the laboratory. There is a strong trend to take spectroscopy on the line rather than taking the sample to the lab. Not only quality and safety issues, but also economic considerations motivate the producers to develop methods for the real time process analysis. Online measurements are suitable for solid and liquid samples alike. There are different contact and non-contact sensors available which can be implemented into pipes, bypasses

FT-NIR spectroscopy is a high-performance method of analysis that is increasingly being used in the food industry. With its simple operation, it has the potential to replace a wide range of conventional analysis methods and to serve as a rapid method that dramatically increases the number of samples that can be measured. Consequently, the quality of the raw materials, production processes and end products can be controlled and monitored more closely.

The award winning MATRIX-F FT-NIR spectrometer allows the direct measurement in pipes, bypasses and even over conveyor belts leading to a better understanding and control of the process.

QIMAROX DELIVERS SPEED, FLEXIBILITY AND DURABILITY AT A COMPETITIVE PRICE Innovative palletisers and vertical transport systems.

Qimarox is taking the world by storm with its wide range of palletising and vertical transport systems. Qimarox’s innovative product lifts, pallet lifts and palletisers are proof that high capacity and flexibility can go together with low operating costs and a high degree of durability. Qimarox will be present at the Fachpack, taking place from 29 September to 1 October 2015.

Q

imarox supplies components for material handling and packaging systems that are characterised by a compact and modular design and high degree of standardisation. Consequently, the cost of purchase, installation, integration, use and maintenance is reduced to a minimum, which makes Qimarox components the most competitive solutions in the market. At the same time, the components excel not only in capacity, but also in versatility and flexibility, which makes them easy to integrate into any situation. In short, Qimarox places mechanisation and automation of packaging processes and logistics processes within everyone’s reach. Fast and efficient palletising Qimarox’s Highrunner mk7 is an innovative palletiser that combines the capacity of a conventional palletiser with the flexibility of a palletising robot. Whether it’s boxes with or without covers, trays with or without foil, buckets, 66

crates or jerrycans - the Highrunner mk7 can carefully and accurately position them into any desired pattern and deposit them on the pallet layer by layer. The user-friendly touch screen allows operators to easily select the desired stacking pattern and program new stacking patterns if necessary. The Highrunner mk7 distinguishes itself in the market with its patented pattern-formation conveyor, which is always located at the same height as the top of the pallet. This allows the layers created on the pattern-formation conveyor to be deposited at lighting speed, which makes for a particularly high capacity. A built-in pallet lift ensures that the pallet drops automatically so that the next layer can be deposited after each layer is deposited. Once a pallet is full, the lift descends to floor level, after which a roller conveyor removes the products. Integrating multiple Highrunners according to the unique Crossrunner principle results in an extremely com-

pact setup where a single roller conveyor is sufficient for the supply and removal of all pallets, both full and empty. This results in a setup that is able to process large volumes while occupying little space. Vertical transport and sorting The Prorunner mk5 is the undisputed

eye-catcher at the fair. This elegant product lift works according to the time-honoured paternoster principle, which results in a versatile vertical transport system with a capacity of 2,000 products per hour. Because a single elevator system can be used for both upward and downward product flows, the Prorunner mk5 is ideal for vertical sorting. The standard model of this maintenance friendly and sophisticated product elevator is available for the fixed price of only €6,950, including infeed and outfeed conveyors and safety fencing. Unlike other continuous product elevators, the Prorunner mk5 can feed products in and out in three directions, without the need for additional equipment. Whether it’s boxes, crates, trays or bags: this clever product elevator transports them all to any desired level and without any critical product transitions. All products are transported horizontally at all times, so that product deformations are excluded. The Prorunner mk5 has a patented drive system that reduces friction,

IN SHORT

therefore reducing energy consumption. Because the system keeps itself in balance, the motor only has to propel the product to be transported, and not the product carrier. The system can therefore be operated at a low motor capacity, resulting in considerable savings when compared to other lift systems. Partly for these reasons, Qimarox’s Prorunner product conveyors are used by many OEMs, system integrators and manufacturers of transport systems in various industries around the world. Robust and compact pallet lift The Prorunner mk10 - an extremely robust product elevator for pallets of up to 2,000 kg - is the latest product in Qimarox’s range of material handling systems. This product lift can transport up to sixty pallets per hour ten metres upwards. This standardised, modular product lift can be integrated into any end-of-line packaging system or storage system and can furthermore be used in conjunction with the Highrunner mk7, Qimarox’s unique product palletiser. The Qimarox Prorunner mk10 is based on the design

of the successful Prorunner mk9 pallet lift. The most important difference is that the new Prorunner mk10 features four instead of two columns, allowing it to easily transport pallets weighing up to 2,000 kg. The Prorunner mk10 can easily bridge any difference in height between 0.40 and 10 metres. Even at the maximum height difference of 10 metres, the lift can still easily transport sixty pallets per hour with ease. The Prorunner mk10 is equipped with a lifting platform of 1200 x 1200 mm as standard, so that it can handle not only euro pallets, but also product carriers of different sizes such as block pallets. Thanks to its four-column construction, pallets can be fed in and out on four different sides. It is also possible to use a single machine to supply multiple infeed or outfeed conveyors, so that the lift can also be used for, for example, vertical sorting. Because the lift is constructed out of standard sections, its height can be increased in 250 mm increments. The Prorunner mk10 is constructed using steel instead of aluminium columns, which ensures great 67

stability despite the dynamic forces that occur during operation. Lifting is silent in the Prorunner mk10 because it is taken care of by steel cables in a durable plastic case. Furthermore, unlike when using chains, the steel cables

Oktober in Neurenberg stattfindet.

Q

Besuchen Sie unseren Stand Sind Sie neugierig geworden? DesigneD for corners: Angled lineAr guides from igus New lubrication-free drylin solutions for custom design concepts

ndividual requirements and space optimisation calls for new ideas in the field of design. In the instance of linear plain bearings, the straight structured rail guide has caused certain limitations. Now the plastics expert igus also offers angled drylin rails, which give the designers more freedom such as, in the cabins of construction and agricultural equipment.

Utilising the already proven and tested drylin W linear plain bearings, igus has developed a new offer for linear guides that provide a functional reliable and cost-effective solution even for angled travel paths. The angled guide rails are made of aluminium and have an exceptionally resistant hard-anodised coating. Customised guide carriages thereby implement cornering without tilting or seizing. In addition, appropriate hand clamps can be added. Low installation effort and maintenance-free operation Examples for the versatile use of angled section rails in the driver’s cab of an agricultural machine: lubrication-free mobility in all directions, even in the most confined of spaces. are the strengths of the new system, which like all drylin systems combine low friction coefficients with dirt-repellent dry operation. The drylin aluminium rails are also easy to machine individually and are characterised by their light weight. Use in driver’s cabs The driver’s cab of an agricultural machine is a good example of how angled guide rails can increase flexibility in the adjustment of monitors, seats or fittings and ideally adapt to the general

design of the machine. Every agricultural machine has its specific frame sizes and design requirements. Adaptable, modular components create the necessary leeway to achieve custom solutions. The angled drylin rail can be configured. Within certain physical limits, users can choose their own bending radius and therefore optimally fit in the driver’s cab. igus manufactures the section rail according to these specifications and provides the individual rails and linear bearings from the range of drylin W and drylin T.

BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS TO PURIFY AND REUSE URBAN AND INDUSTRIAL WASTE WATERS IN A ZERO KILOMETRE WAY

W

e ECO-SISTEMI Srl is involved in research, development, planning and realization of biological systems to purify and reuse urban and industrial waste waters in a zero kilometre way: compact solutions, particularly indicated for the treatment, the reuse and the saving of water in communities far from the big centralized depuration plants and from the sewer system. RCBR – Rotating Cell Biofilm Reactor. RCBR devices are self-installing modules: they have very reduced dimensions and they achieve the removal of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous by a biological pro-

72

cess known as “biofilm system”. In this system, plastic objects, called “biological carriers”, are in contact with waste waters to be purified: they independently develop a bacterial biofilm which is able to nourish itself by the pollutants, giving clean water back to the environment. RCBR devices have a broad spectrum of application for any type of biodegradable waste waters; specially urban waste waters, industrial agricultural and food (for example, fruit/vegetable washing, wine, beer and fruit juice production, meatmaking, breeding farms, etc.). The RCBR devices are realized in 8 models; they are able to treat

waste waters produced by 50 up to 3.000 equivalent inhabitants (p.e). It is possible to combine in pair the devices, by a joint invented by ECOSISTEMI: in this way, it is possible to treat a greater amount of waste waters, also for small/medium communities, up to 15.000 inhabitants (for example, 5 modules of 3.000 p.e). How does the process work? RCBR device is a stainless steel reinforced rotating cell which slowly rotates inside a stainless steel tank. Waste waters are flowed into the tank by a pump which moves the liquid to be purified from a tank to the machine. The cell is at 100% full of plastic el-

ements which rotate into the dirty water developing bacterial film. If the cell partially rotates inside the water, bacterial communities remove the organic carbon and oxidize ammonium to nitrate. If the cell totally rotates inside dirty water, the system has no oxygen and it reduces nitrates to molecular nitrogen. Otherwise, if we put together two RCBR devices, one that partially rotates into the dirty water and the other one totally immersed, we can obtain a complete remediation that removes both the organic component and the nitrogen component. ECO-SISTEMI has realized a sequence of devices which operate this process in a “nutshell”, without making any cement work, without using expensive compressors for the bacterial oxygenation. They are so simple that they do not need any specialized maintenance and they have very competitive costs. Installation typology. The classic installation typology allows the realization of a totally plant design solution, with sedimentation and mud recovery. The RCBR device can be integrated to the green technol-

ogy known as “phytodepuration”. Matching only one nitrifying RCBR module to a bed of phytodepuration (waterproof and planted dig with water vegetable extracts), it is possible: a) to reduce more than 1/3 the dimension of the phytodepuration bed’s dig. b) to use the phytodepurator as disinfection system of the purified water’s bacterial component to be able to collect and reuse it for the

plant and garden irrigation. c) to remove in a total way the production and the problems of biological exhausted mud management produced by the plant itself. Biological carriers. ECO-SISTEMI uses as bacterial carriers used plastic bottle caps. It is a noble and indestructible material available on the market at very cheap prices. Depuration efficiency. In just one week, we have the creation of the bacterial biofilm and after three weeks we can see the 99,5% removal of suspended solids; the 98,7% of the organic substance (COD); the 99,3% of ammonium; the 93% of nitrites; the 92% of nitrates and the 84% of the total phosphorous. These results allow to obtain a very high quality of the output waters, which can reach the surface water, respecting the European current regulations. Energetic consumption. RCBR devices need for their functioning only low consumption electric engines, about 10 times lower than an active mud traditional technology which uses compressors for the bacterial flora oxigenation.

news in short

In order to meet the food industry’s demands of efficiency improvements and high hygiene standards, ScanBelt has developed a new conveyor belt in cooperation with process equipment manufacturers and hygiene specialists. “Significant development in hygiene requirements and food safety over the past ten years has influenced demands from the Russian market. It has to be easy and straightforward for food producers to diminish the bacteria on food. Therefore, this conveyor belt is designed with a more open design than any other on the market. This secures an easier cleaning process, which results in better hygiene,” Carl Erik Taxbro, Vice President of Sales and Export in ScanBelt explains. “The opening of the new belt ensures less damage to the food, because it is customized according to our customers’ products. This means that the food manufacturers benefit from a more effective production, as the extraction is higher and thereby improves the final product and profit,” Carl Erik Taxbro continues. Tailor-made fittings Fitted openings and a general open design secures that the conveyor belt can be used in different productions. “For the manufacturers, this means that the belt can be applied to existing production lines, with tailor-made solutions in proportion to size and various accessories, which enables the belt to perform various tasks,“ Carl Erik Taxbro explains.

alectia: russian food manufacturers want food-safety and future-proof facilities Food Manufacturers in Russia want world-class food-safety standards. ALECTIA, a Danish consulting company, is currently working on cattle, poultry and pig slaughterhouses in the Russian Market. Besides food-safety, ALECTIA experience that their Russian customers have a focus on achieving high productivity and production facilities designed for the future. “Food manufacturers in Russia want to be able to comply with European and world-class standards. This means that they need to secure an overall planning approach for a new factory. The optimal investment is a combination of building design, production equipment and utility installations such as refrigeration and process ventilation. Our task is to secure the client’s investment, so that both production and food-safety is optimal,” Olav Vind Larsen, Vice President, Food Industry in ALECTIA, says. ALECTIA advise their Russian customers during the design and implementation process. Here, one challenge is a complicated buying process. “There is a need for a more transparent buying process. If you do not describe exactly what you want, you end up with equipment that might not be the most optimal for your production. This is why a proper design process is important. The investor shall be able to compare between different supplier proposals so that negotiations can be made at the best possible basis. This is a key

element of a successful tender process”, Olav Vind Larsen says. Follow entire process ALECTIA follows the entire process from design to implementation and evaluation to make sure that everything complies with the overall design med process plan. One Russian demand is futureproof processes. “We always look at future development options with our customers. We know from experience that it is important that we deliver a long term solution, which can be expanded to meet requirements in five to ten years when production needs to increase,” Olav Vind Larsen explains. This is the case in all the projects ALECTIA is working on right now. Current projects include Greenfield projects and upgrading existing factories. “In one of your projects, we are supporting the client in securing that the equipment delivered from the supplier, fulfill the requirements of a modern food factory. An ALECTIA team conducted an audit of the existing factory and made a prioritized list of necessary design changes which should be carried out by the supplier. The production audit is an efficient tool in the performance improvement of the project, but it is even better to design the factory optimally from the start. The cost of delay or poor operational performance is much higher than the cost of the right design of buildings and production equipment”, Olav Vind Larsen says. ALECTIA will be exhibiting at Agroprodmash on Oktober 5-9 2015. Meet them at the Pavilion of Denmark at pavilion 2, Hall 3, stand 23C48.

NEW FIBRE LASERS DELIVER FLEXIBLE CODING SOLUTIONS

L

inx Printing Technologies has extended its laser coders portfolio with the introduction of two fibre lasers that provide a hugely flexible coding solution across the widest range of materials for both static applications and moving production lines.

Fibre laser technology offers highly energy-efficient coding across many different substrates including metals and plastics as well as paper and glass. It delivers a very fine spot size which creates excellent quality permanent codes. This makes fibre lasers ideal for producing small discreet codes for traceability or anti-counterfeiting purposes, bigger codes for high profile branding or promotions, and large amounts of information in a small area. The coders are suitable for many different sectors including aerospace, automotive, electronics, pharmaceutical, medical devices and tooling, as well as FMCG packaging. The new Linx FSL20 and Linx FSL50 have one of the smallest supply units and marking heads on the market, which enable easy integration into even the smallest of factory spaces. The availability of four different lenses means the coders can be tailored to the precise needs of each product - whether for static or moving environments. Both models feature a wide range of fonts, codes and graphics over multiple lines and unlimited areas, and this versatility also offers effective future proofing, allowing companies to change coding specifications to suit their changing requirements. The durable construction of the Linx fibre lasers, which includes the IP54

rated marking head, enables the coders to operate in more challenging environments than many other lasers, with the laser source lasting more than 100,000 hours. An internal air cooler offers greater energy efficiency and is maintenance-free, as well as producing cost savings over the installation of a separate cooling system or compressed air supply. Air cooling also eliminates the potential for leaks or clogging commonly found with a water-cooled system. The well-refined beam quality ensures consistent smooth coding. As well as the small marking head, the option of a Beam Turning Unit (BTU), which allows the Linx fibre lasers to code at right angles, further enhances their flexibility to be installed into small, tight spaces, or integrated into filling machines and OEM machines with minimum disruption to existing workflows. The four different lenses that can be specified are able to focus at different distances from the substrate in order to ensure the best coding solu-

tion for each application. The Linx fibre lasers are offered with a choice of 20 watt (Linx FSL20) and 50 watt (Linx FSL50) beam sources. LinxDraw software allows quick and easy code creation and changes via an optional colour touch screen or from a separate PC. “With our new fibre lasers we have developed a coder that meets our customers’ most important criteria - easy integration, reliable operation

and the flexibility to deliver high quality codes of any description across the widest range of substrates,” explains Matt Eastham, Laser Product Manager, Linx Printing Technologies. “The Linx FSL20 and FSL50 are class-leading variants and an important addition to our laser coder offering, giving our customers the reassurance of a coding solution that is exactly right for their operation.” www.linxglobal.com

THREE INGREDIENT SPECIALISTS FROM THE STERN-WYWIOL GRUPPE AT IBA 2015 BAKERIES BENEFIT FROM A NETWORK OF COMPETENCE IN INGREDIENTS

T

he ingredient specialists Mühlenchemie, DeutscheBack and SternEnzym from the SternWywiol Gruppe will be presenting their latest solutions on a joint stand (Hall B5, Stand 370). The systems are designed to help manufacturers of baked goods enhance their processes and products, increase profitability and take up market trends with optimum results. Besides drawing on the skills of the individual specialist firms, users benefit from a network of cooperation between the three companies within the group. This cooperation makes it possible to develop customized solutions all from one source. The services offered extend from consultation and product development together with the customer through applications trials to production of the functional ingredients.

Mühlenchemie: flexible solutions in response to changing overall conditions in the milling industry This year, the flour treatment specialist

Mühlenchemie will present solutions that enable companies to respond to changing conditions in the raw material markets. One example is flour improvers based on different enzyme systems that make it possible to adjust the falling number of flours. For bakers and millers, the falling number is the measure of the flour’s natural enzymatic activity and is considered to be a quality parameter. The falling number determines the properties of the dough and the crumb and also the impression of freshness created by the bread. The addition of enzymebased flour improvers enables millers to compensate for fluctuations in the baking properties of flours. The product range includes current solutions such as EMCEmalt, Betamalt 25 FBD, Alphamalt VC 5000 SN and Alphamalt FN which lower the falling number according to the usage level. The company will also explain the product series EMCEgluten Enhancer. The enzyme compounds compensate for a low

gluten content of the flour and boost the effect of the existing gluten. The weaker the gluten in the flour, or the smaller the percentage present, the less satisfactory are the stability of the dough and the baked volume. EMCEgluten Enhancer counteracts such a loss of quality and ensures better results from the baking process without the addition of vital wheat gluten. These enzyme compounds also compensate for deficiencies in the raw materials and permit excellent results even when low-gluten wheat is used. As a flour treatment specialist, Mühlenchemie offers different enzyme systems to solve a host of problems that occur in milling. Its products are exported to over 100 countries. DeutscheBack: success with enzyme-based baking concentrates DeutscheBack will present its current range of solutions that enable bakeries to meet the latest consumer trends in a financially viable manner. ty. The properties of the dough remain unchanged, and the crumb stays firm even when cut. Since a longer shelf-life and enhanced consistency of the products can be achieved with a low dose, bakeries can increase the profitability of their pastry goods.

Fresh XL2 1% and TopBake Fresh XL3 1% keep bread fresh longer with flours that tend to bake dry. The addition of 1% to 1.5% of the enzyme compound results in a much softer and more succulent crumb. Whereas TopBake Fresh XL2 1% was developed for rye and mixed wheat and rye bread, TopBake Fresh XL3 1% is intended for wheat and mixed wheat bread. A small dose is enough to achieve noticeable and long-lasting results. TopSweet Black 50 is a fifty-percent baking premix for brownies and muffins. The use of TopSweet Black 50 results in baked goods with a very dark colour and a distinctive flavour. The typically American products are pleasantly soft and succulent. TopBake 1-2-Korn is a spelt premix containing einkorn (onegrained wheat) and emmer. It enables bakeries to meet the demand for bread and rolls with a slightly nutty taste. Einkorn is an ancient cereal, practically unknown nowadays. It is extremely wholesome and nutritious and at the same time light and readily digestible. Einkorn, emmer and spelt are robust cereals that have been grown for over 10,000 years and need little fertilizer. The TopBake 1-2-Korn premix therefore meets the growing trend towards the production of baked goods from ancient, indigenous grain varieties. SternEnzym - the Enzyme Designer SternEnzym will be showing tailormade enzyme systems designed to

84

simplify processes and make the production of baked goods more profitable. Mulgazym DX improves the stability of the dough, reduces stickiness and increases fermentation tolerance. The enzyme complex can be used for all yeast-raised products such as rolls, baguettes and sandwich loaves. Mulgazym DX achieves attractive results even with weak flours and complex processes such as retarded fermentation or freezing. Unlike DATEM, Mulgazym DX is tasteless and temperature-stable, and because of the low usage levels it enables mills and bakeries to save on transportation and warehousing costs. The Sternzym Fresh Cake series prolongs the shelflife of sponge-type products like cup cakes and Gugelhupf. The result is a much softer crumb with better elastici-

Use of synergisms through Interdisciplinary cooperation Not only do customers of the SternWywiol Gruppe benefit by the network of cooperation between the sister companies in the fields of product development and applications consultancy; they also profit from the group’s international experience in the bakery sector, acquired through its 17 affiliates abroad. The heart of the owner-managed group of companies is the extensive applications research carried out by the individual firms and concentrated under one roof at the Technology Centre in Ahrensburg, near Hamburg. The wide range of tests and trials made possible by the latest applications technology in laboratories covering an area of more than 3,000 m² offers customers real value-added. A further important aid to international success is the modern production plant in Wittenburg, near Schwerin. Thanks to their large capacities, the eight different blending lines can produce up to 40,000 tonnes of ingredients annually. Separate production units are available for enzymes and vitamins.

this cross-border cooperation as strengthening both parties: “I am very pleased that we have reached an agreement. Both trade fairs will benefit from it. The exhibitors at drinktec, of which almost half also offer solutions for the wine industry, will have access to even more potential customers as a result of the integration of SIMEI. Vice versa, too, the international scope of drinktec will benefit the SIMEI exhibitors. And not least, this agreement also strengthens the status of Munich as a top location for trade fairs.” Domenico Zonin is also confident: “The cooperation with drinktec is the basis for the further development and internationalization of SIMEI, as the leading trade fair for wine technology.” The next SIMEI takes place from November 3 to 6, 2015 in Milan. After that, from September 11 to 15, 2017, it will celebrate its Munich premiere, as an integrated part of drinktec. In 2019 SIMEI will then again be held in Italy, where, supported by drinktec, it will feature an extended portfolio to include further beverage categories. The agreement between MMG and UIV makes provision for a

special SIMEI exhibition space within drinktec 2017 in Munich dedicated exclusively to the wine sector. This showcase is to extend to at least two exhibition halls, and cover a total of 20,000 square meters of space. As a result the total hall space taken up by the world´s leading trade fair drinktec rises to over 150,000 square meters. In addition to this, the organizers of the two trade fairs have agreed that SIMEI will also get involved in the worldwide events portfolio of drinktec: With drink technology India, food & drink technology Africa and China Brew China Beverage, drinktec already has a strong presence in key global markets. SIMEI has been held in Milan since 1963, and it is regarded as the world´s leading trade fair for wine technology. Over 600 exhibitors and more than 40,000 visitors are expected to attend SIMEI in 2015. The origins of drinktec go back to the 1950s. This trade fair is regarded as the world´s No. 1 event for the beverage and liquid food industry: It covers the entire process chain from raw materials, agents and additives, to production, filling, packaging and logistics, as well as marketing. Francesco Pavanello, Director-General of UIV, commented: “I am proud to see

the attention and recognition shown to this joint project by such an important and international trade-fair company as Messe München. The most important components of this agreement in our view are: UIV retains the brand rights to SIMEI; SIMEI has high visibility at a trade fair as prestigious as drinktec; and we have the possibility of further joint projects in the medium and long-term.” Richard Clemens, Managing Director of the VDMA Food Processing and Packaging Machinery Association (Fachverband Nahrungsmittelmaschinen und Verpackungsmaschinen), the conceptual sponsor of drinktec, sees the cooperation as above all bringing advantages to the exhibitors and visitors of both trade fairs: “The technology already showcased at drinktec for the wine industry will now be superbly supplemented by this cooperation with SIMEI. For drinktec exhibitors there will be additional visitor potential from strong winegrowing countriesabove all Italy. In addition the cooperation also offers significant added value to visitors from emerging winegrowing countries, thanks to a more in-depth spectrum of products and services.

THE LIGHTEST BOTTLES IN THE ROMANIAN MARKET PRODUCED WITH 47% ENERGY SAVINGS

R

io Bucovina, the Romanian producer and distributor of natural mineral waters and soft drinks, recently reduced energy usage by up to 47% by installing a new Sidel SBO10 Universal 2eco blow moulder at its production facility in Vatra Dornei. At the same time, it also collaborated with the Sidel Services™ packaging team on a stylish new bottle design for its still water. Through developing the new design, which included adopting the international 29/25 short-neck bottle standard1 across the range of sizes, the weight of the bottles was reduced by up to 45%. Rio Bucovina is now producing the lightest bottles in the Romanian market. 129/25 international shortneck bottle standard (29mm thread diameter and 25mm inner diameter).

Longstanding partnership with Sidel Rio Bucovina is a major player in the Romanian fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) market where it figures in the top three producers of natural mineral water. The company produces a wide array of beverages and foodstuffs at its two production sites. This includes the bottling of ‘Bucovina’ still and carbonated natural mineral water, and the production of ‘La Vitta’ branded water. The company also produces soft drinks under the brand names ‘Rio’, ‘La Vitta’, ‘Malibu’ and ‘BonTon’, and an energy drink with the brand name ‘Golden Horse’. Besides these, Rio Bucovina distributes a wide range of food and other items. Rio Bucovina has long been a customer of Sidel, the leading global provider of PET solutions for liquid packaging, to whom the company first turned in 1993. That was when it purchased two Sidel SBO16

92

blow moulders. One was installed at the bottling plant in Vatra Dornei, the well-known spa and ski resort in the Carpathian Mountains in north-eastern Romania, for the production of both still and sparkling water. The second Sidel SBO16 blow moulder was purchased for bottling soft drinks at the Rio Bucovina plant in Timisoara in western Romania, the third biggest city in the country in terms of population. Flexibility, reliability and energy savings Following the success of these projects and the trust built between both

companies over more than 20 years, Rio Bucovina has recently acquired another Sidel blow moulder for its Vatra Dornei plant. On this occasion, the company has selected the SBO10 Universal 2eco, choosing it for its flexibility and its reliability coupled with the technical support that the company knew Sidel was capable of providing, having experienced it firsthand for the two decades of their working relationship. Cristian Serban, Business Development Director of Rio Bucovina, says: “Having worked with the company for over 20 years now, we know the good work we can

expect from Sidel. The SBO Universal 2eco, along with its Ecoven, has substantially cut costs for us, reducing the new line’s energy consumption by 47% when compared to other blow moulders we might have chosen.” The Ecoven technology requires fewer heating modules and lamps, with the preform-heating time reduced by up to 15%. Power consumption of the ovens is therefore substantially decreased and the use of installed power lowered. As well as providing a wide process window, the Ecoven’s large heating reserve and fast heating ensures there is no slow-down in production, whatever kind of preform is used. It also delivers excellent heat treatment precision, which ensures identical bottle characteristics and quality. Rio Bucovina also benefits from the air consumption reduction of the SBO Universal 2eco range due to improved efficiency in the air circuits, integrated cylinders, solenoid and flow limiters. This equates to additional savings in production costs.

bottles, the attractive new designs weigh considerably less - 31.5 grams compared to 43 grams for 2 litre bottles; 24 grams compared to 39 grams for 1.5 litre bottles; and 12 grams compared to 22 grams for 0.5 litre bottles. Cristian continues: “The Sidel packaging design team listened to our branding needs for the new bottles and implemented our goals in the final shapes. Most importantly, they worked with us to optimise the lightweighting opportunity available to us. As a result, the stylish new bottles that the team optimised for us, which reflects everything we asked of Sidel, are the lightest bottles in the Romanian market - with a significant weight reduction of some 45%. The installation of the Sidel SB010 Universal 2eco has enabled us to move to the 29/25 standard - with the direct result of achieving the lightweighting benefits. This has naturally led to a more environmentally friendly production process, as well as substantial savings.”

The lightest bottles on the Romanian market Rio Bucovina also launched redesigned Bucovina bottles, characterised by their very modern and elegant approach. Compared to the previous

Bottled water dominates the Romanian market In Romania, bottled water is in demand because it is inexpensively priced and is perceived as a ‘natural’ soft drink. It is also seen as a much healthier and

reliable option in comparison to the quality of tap water generally available throughout the country, especially in Bucharest and other large cities. Domestic manufacturers, most of whom have been supplying the country with bottled mineral water for decades, dominate the market through tradition, brand recognition and affordable pricing. Sales of water have been undergoing an annual growth of around 5% over the past two years, which has mainly seen the consolidation of leading brands. This moderate growth is the result of penetration into households of all income levels. Although carbonated or ‘sparkling’ water has a larger, established consumer base, mostly through the heavy consumption of traditional ‘spritz’ - the combination of carbonated water with wine - still bottled water has moved ahead in terms of volume growth over the past couple of years. However, the decrease in Romanian consumers’ spending power has led to their growing acceptance of cheaper water. By introducing the Sidel blow moulder, Rio Bucovina is in an excellent position to build on its already strong position in this market with a lightweight, modern and attractive bottle produced through a blowing process which is more environmentally friendly.

FLAT TUBULAR HEATERS BOOST EFFICIENCY FOR FRYER TECHNOLOGY By Roly Juliano Watlow

An example of a flat tubular heater – the FIREBAR from Watlow

F

rom fryers to griddles to ovens, heat is an important component in most foodservice applications. When it comes to the heat source for frying, not all heating elements are created equal. Electric fryer heaters can be segmented into two broad categories - round tubular heaters, and flat tubular heaters. When first introduced, fryer heaters were round tubular. But engineers found that a flat tubular design offered many benefits - the most important being that the shape lifts the oil into the cook zone

94

far better than round heaters. An innovation was born. Flat Surface Geometry Because of its design and geometry, flat tubular heaters will heat viscous fluids from ambient temperature faster than round tubular elements with the same wattage and at a lower sheath temperature. The benefit of this shape is the enhanced flow of liquid past the surface of the heating element. The round tubular has a much more erratic flow pattern (see graphic). Note the currents swirl around and trap

heat next to the sheath. This is due to the tubular’s round shape, which causes a wider and less efficient flow of liquid around the heater surface. The flow pattern around the flat tubular heater is streamlined; the flat surface has less restriction on the liquid as it moves up and past the heater sides. This efficient and faster flow pattern permits the liquid to move heat away from the sheath very quickly, resulting in the flat tubular heater’s lower operating sheath temperature (see graphic).

faster than the round heater. The end result – the flat tubular gets the heated liquid into the work zone faster than when using a round tubular. The flat tubular heater has about a 50 percent greater surface area than a round tubular. This surface area design improvement is the key to lowering watt density for the same length heater or reducing the heater size while maintaining the same watt density.

Flat tubular heaters are ideal for fryer applications because their shape lifts the oil into the work zone better than round heaters.

Greater Buoyancy Force This natural convection phenomenon partially depends on the ratio of a buoyancy force to the viscous force of the fluid being heated. The buoyancy force or the flow of liquid up and across the heater surface is mainly determined by the length of the heater sides. The side of a flat tubular heater is typically 1 in. (25 mm), compared to the 0.43 in. (10.9 mm) or less dimension of a round tubular element. The flat tubular heater’s smaller edge and longer side creates a buoyancy force up to ten times greater than a round tubular heater depending on the material being heated. 96

Faster Heat Up Flat surface technology provides faster heat up and recovery times than round tubular heaters. Their unique shape minimizes coking and oil degradation, and enhances the flow of the oil past the element’s surface, helping to pull heat away from the heater sheath. Compacted magnesium oxide (MgO) insulation transfers heat away from resistance wire to sheath material and media more efficiently, shortening heat-up time. In addition, the heater lasts longer because it runs at a significantly lower sheath temperature than an equal watt density round tubular. This also prolongs the life of the oil which shortens and reduces costs from frequent changing.

Smaller Dimension Normal to Flow This feature refers to the width dimension of the heater that the liquid flows around. Typically, a narrower dimension will give a smoother and faster liquid flow. For example, the round tubular’s wide dimension, nearly a half-inch, inhibits the flow of liquid. It causes currents which disrupt the flow and the flow rate is somewhat slower.

If coking is a problem, it is an indication that the sheath temperature is too hot and is burning the oil. A flat tubular heater will provide a lower sheath temperature than a round tubular element, without reducing wattage or watt density. Coking is also reduced by the wiping action that occurs as the heated liquid flows past the heaters surface. The result is less liquid degradation and longer liquid life.

The flat tubular heater, on the other hand, has a much thinner dimension 0.235 in. (5.97 mm), which reduces the drag forces on the liquid flowing past the heater. This allows the liquid to move past the flat heater

Watlow’s flat tubular heater, called FIREBAR®, has long been a standard in the foodservice industry. An independent study that adhered to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards, called

AUTOMATIONCOMPONENTS

“Prototype Element Performance Test,” revealed that the FIREBAR flat heating element was the first to consistently return the oil to the 171°C (340°F) reload temperature. FIREBAR also maintained the highest average cook zone temperature of the heating elements tested, recorded the fastest pre-heat time and offered one of the lowest pre-heat energy consumption levels ever tested. During the performance comparison test of the FIREBAR heater versus an equivalent kW round tubular heater, per ASTMs test method F1361-7, the FIREBAR heater’s fast recovery allowed cooking of six heavy loads of french fries versus five heavy loads of an equivalent tubular or a 20 percent capacity improvement (see below). Reduced Watt Density Flat tubular heaters can be operated at a higher watt density than

INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS

a round tubular heating element without increasing the sheath temperature. Flat tubular heaters also allow more wattage into the application at the same watt density with a shorter heating element. Both types of heaters can have the same wattage, but the flat tubular will operate at a lower sheath temperature than the round tubular. In tests conducted to demonstrate this phenomenon, both heater types had a watt density of 30 and were immersed in a light liquid shortening. The flat tubular element heated the oil faster from ambient temperature than the round tubular. At 149°C (300°F), the flat tubular element heated the oil to temperature in 11 minutes where as the round tubular took 18 minutes. Plus, the flat tubular heater’s average sheath temperature was 10°C (50°F) lower than the round tubular.

Customizable, Easy to Install FIREBAR can be wired 3-phase, making installation easier and cheaper while reducing the size of the heating assembly. FIREBAR heating elements can be formed into virtually any shape for an immersion application. This flat tubular heater can be configured with a variety of wattage and voltage ratings, terminations, sheath materials and mounting options to satisfy the most demanding foodservice applications. The FIREBAR is typically constructed with epoxy or silicone seals to combat moisture contamination from environmental kitchen conditions.

ducing threaded fasteners and eliminating lamination points between surfaces to minimize areas where water can be trapped and bacteria can grow. Improved water/product containment is the result of a higher infeed frame plate with an added deflection flange to help shed water off the plate, sloped deflectors on both sides and a deflector flange on the discharge shear. These four new flanges reduce fasteners and laminations where microbes can grow while moving drip points to within the envelope of the equipment. This makes it easier for processors to mount a drain pan under the system and better captures water and product spillage to minimize spillage to the floor, improving sanitation and worker safety. New top and side bearing/sprocket covers and chain guards are made of punch plate material that enables visual inspection of the bearings, drive sprockets, wear strips and chain without removing the covers or guards, which eases maintenance. The idle side cover hinges down without removal of the top cover to further ease maintenance. Top surfaces are sloped to reduce product buildup and shed water. The covers and guards enhance sanitation by enabling the areas behind them to be cleaned with a high pressure washdown without removing the covers and guards. Solid top covers are available as an option. A new motor mount features a drip pan below the gearbox with integrated standoffs. The single square tube support is positioned at a 45° angle to shed product and water. Mounting fasteners are reduced and blind back standoffs are used to further reduce threads and laminations.

INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS

An updated spray bar system, available as an option, eliminates U-bolts and bracket mounting laminations. The new brackets, which support both the infeed and side spray bars, utilize blind back standoffs and enable the top bearing/sprocket cover to be removed while the spray bars remain in place to enhance sanitation and ease maintenance. Key redesigned the optional CE cover, which used to be mounted using side plate retainer bolts and had to be removed before the top bearing/ sprocket covers could be removed. The new CE cover is mounted to the spray bar brackets, allowing the top bearing/sprocket covers and side plates to be removed without removing the CE cover, which eases maintenance.

An optional CE bearing cover protects workers from an exposed shaft end and features perforations for visual inspection of the shaft/bearing and easy cleaning. A new standard bearing/shaft guard exceeds OSHA standards to improve worker safety. Standard Rotary Sizing and Grading Systems that are adjusted manually now feature a hard stop mechanism that prevents an operator from overtightening the adjustment blocks while closing the gap between the rolls, which prevents the blocks from being damaged. The optional Auto Adjust has also been improved with the addition of electronic limit switches for fullopen and full-closed positions and a mechanical fail safe detent clutch to prevent blocks from being damaged. The new design is 100 percent metric, with metric fasteners, bearings, shafts and sprockets. This simplifies maintenance since the crew now needs only one tool set. Key will continue to support its installed base with imperial dimensioned rolls and components. All sanitation and maintenance enhancements are available on every new Rotary Sizing and Grading System, which includes Key’s Sliver Sizer Remover (SSR), Precision Size Grader (PSG) and Rotary Size Grader (RSG). Featuring on-the-fly tuning, no pinch points, self-cleaning stainless steel rollers, sealed corrosion resistant bearings for low maintenance and easy cleaning for quick product changeover, these systems help food processors enhance product quality while reducing maintenance and improving sanitation. get over yourself Branding and labeling What does it mean?

The quality of labeling is extremely important, in the packaging process. Materials, techniques, research & development, packaging know-how and philosophy: that’s what defines us when dealing with your product using our self-adhesive labels. Starting from these milestones, we keep pushing the envelope, always beyond our limits, nowadays not only with multilabels (which solve most of the spatial problems), but also with security labels, to better tackle any issue regarding traceability, forgery, warranty and misappropriation.
