MANAGING FOOD INGREDIENTS BY INCREASING QUALITY
VIRTO-CUCCOLINI’S MISSION IN THE FOOD SECTOR
S
afety, control, fineness degree, new products selection: those are the keywords summarising Virto-Cuccolini’s support to the food industry. With the adoption of sieving technology from ceramic industry, a sector being characterized by highly challenging resistance and sieving efficiency requirements, in recent years, VirtoCuccolini has stood out also in the lively and miscellaneous food industry, constant source for new ways to exceed sieving performances. As a reliable supplier for most important food industries, the very core of Virto-Cuccolini’s mission is all about the quality that careful and precise sieving can add to the various ingredients used to prepare foodstuff, with continuously improving features. As examples we can take the many sieves supplied for hazelnut grains installed at important global players of the chocolate sector, where it is important to guarantee repeatability in final product configuration, regardless of its production site; Powder milk screening that efficaciously removes residues and lumps (unsuitable for the following mixing or processing stages), despite of the fats that tend to clog the mesh; Sugar – granulated and icing – also benefits from Virto-Cuccolini circular vibrating screens, which enable easier and more efficient cleaning operations thanks to simple machine construction: a particularly recognised advantage for medium productions that need to constantly control the effects of potential con-

tamination due to frequent product change. Separation through vibrating screens is an excellent solution also in case of production tailings recovery, for example in pasta and bread production, and for any other product whose look represents a quality feature. In this case, VirtoCuccolini vibrating screens emerge as a fundamental support for recycling operations and to select new products from waste, in a circular economy viewpoint in which both environment and finance are getting advantages. Virto-Cuccolini’s experience has been developing progressively over time by assisting customers across the globe, and it grows along with not only the new challenges the food industry regularly deals with, but also the innovation input from other industrial sectors, which VirtoCuccolini serves with the same or similar technology. The company’s test workshop in Reggio Emilia is always ready to control the capacity and granulometry performance of Virto-Cuccolini vibrating screens. www.virtogroup.com

VIOLI SRL: DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING OF INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY
V
ioli Srl was founded in 1992 upon Mr. Giorgio Violi’s experience and tenacity, that have been always engaged in the design and manufacturing of industrial machinery, typically used in the goldsmith sector. The sensitivity to anticipate market needs and the ability to adapt the production to customer’s demand have made Violi Srl a serious and reliable partner, fostering the fidelity and trust of many customers at both national and international level. Violi’s technologically advanced divisions offers a range of standard or customized machinery, in order to meet the highest requests of the public and to appraise the competence of each production cycle. The use of new technologies allows to periodically check and analyze the production processes in order to maximize the quality and reliability of the machines. As we all know the metal market fluctuates with the supply and demand of pure metal in the manufacturing industries. With the fast economy development of foreign growing countries the recycling and metal chip processing is more important than ever. Environmental policies developed by governments of various countries according to EU directives and similar push the industries toward investments in equipment designed for the purpose above mentioned, helping them to bring significant economies of scale and develop an awareness of the savings. Recovery of precious metals from industrial waste or recy-

cling of used and obsolete materials is a key issue in the production cycle of companies operating in different sectors such as the RAEE sector; the goldsmith industry is just one of the macro sectors in which the regulated disposal of waste is necessary. In fact, the intrinsic value of the treated waste is extremely high due to the presence of precious metals that must be recovered through a process that maximizes the yield. Thanks to its know-how applied to the production cycles, Violi srl has developed a range of equipment that allow to simply and effectively treat wastes and to recover precious metals, according to the latest environmental and politics regulations. Thanks to more than twenty years of experience in the national and international jewellery industry, Violi srl developed a line of “eco-friendly equipment that allows to easy recover metals from the components of electronic cards. In the first step, a patented machine for splitting components allows to separate components from electronic cards by using controlled heat process and mechanic action. Through the selection of the components, elements that do not contain
precious metals are removed (such as batteries, condensers, copper, aluminum, plastic pieces, etc); the others are crushed and then melted. The result of the process is an alloy ingot composed by all precious and non-precious metals. The process is easily and efficiently carried out, in perfect safety during all steps, and can be provided with different automations. The automatic and manual crushing mills series MA and P designed by Violi Srl are used to crush and pulverize slags and ashes resulting from carbonization of goldsmith residues. The process is automatic and continuous. The dust resulting from the process is filtered and separated from the metal residues (which cannot be pulverized) through a stainless steel net.
The powders obtained by the mill should be mixed in order to obtain homogeneous products ready to be analyzed so as to determine the amount of precious and noble metals they contain. The Violi MX series of mixers for powders, with capacities ranging from 50lt to 1500lt, can be equipped with options such as the electronic weighing system with load cells. All the Violi Srl machines comply with the applicable international standards. PIPEWORK SYSTEMS FOR THE HIGHEST REQUIREMENTS
W
ith two product lines, JACOB is exclusively presenting a modular pipework system with extra security for particularly hygienesensitive industries at POWTECH 2019 in Nuremberg. Safety and hygiene are top priorities when conveying food. JACOB meets this requirement with the FOOD GRADE line. The system complies with both the European EC 1935/2004 and the American FDA food regulations. Likewise, most plant facilities can be built from standard parts. The FOOD GRADE line has more than 3,000 products to choose from. But yet again JACOB can produce any special part needed. Particular care is taken with the FOOD GRADE line: All products which come into contact with food are examined critically to perfect their design and materials. Product contact parts in the FOOD GRADE line, which are made entirely from stainless steel with a quality of at least V2A/1.4301, are ideal for transporting hygienesensitive items. The U-shaped seals are particularly interesting: They are made by vulcanization. This means they are produced without using adhesives. They also comply with European and American regulations. Another advantage: They are more resistant to many aggressive chemicals than conventional seals. Pollution of the product stream with fragments from the pipework

system that could remain after assembly or maintenance work, represents a particular danger. The DETECTABLE DESIGN line provides even more security when it comes to producing bulk goods
where hygiene and purity are essential. Although metallic objects such as screws can be traced with metal detectors and washed out, seals and material fragments have been difficult to detect until now.
This has changed with the DETECTABLE DESIGN line. JACOB has succeeded in adding metal particles to the U-shaped seals and rubber covers. Metal detectors can therefore reliably identify these items so that they can be removed from the product stream. All products also comply with EC 1935/2004 and the FDA guidelines.
The two innovative products lines and further industry-specific solutions will be on display from April 9 to 11 at the JACOB booth in hall 4A, booth 431.

POWDER - BULK SOLIDS LEADING TRADE FAIR FOR PROCESSING
Barry Callebaut focuses on the BEUMER packaging line:
HIGH-QUALITY END-OF-LINE PACKAGING SOLUTION PROTECTS COCOA POWDER
The packaging system at a glance: as general contractor, BEUMER Corporation has installed a complete packaging system, conveying systems and a bagging system.
B
arry Callebaut, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of cocoa and chocolate products, required a packaging system at its Eddystone, PA facility that ensured safe transport of the cocoa powder filled in paper bags and stacked on pallets. The packaging of the bag stacks must combine low packaging costs with sufficient weather protection and high stack stability during transport and storage especially when the paper bags are stacked on pallets of two different sizes. Barry Callebaut engaged BEUMER to develop an end-of-line packaging system for these specific requirements. Barry Callebaut AG with headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland is a fully integrated company that masters nearly all steps from the sourcing of cocoa beans right up to the finished products sold on store shelves. As supplier of industrial and specialty chocolates, the company serves industrial and artisanal customers. The American subsidiary in Eddystone fills bags with cocoa powder, pal-

letises and packages them. The bags are then loaded into containers or trucks and transported to distributors such as chocolatiers, pastry chefs or bakeries in North America or Europe.
baut and BEUMER already cooperated successfully for a French facility. For this reason, the manufacturer of cocoa and chocolate products once again engaged the intralogistic specialist.
High requirements for the packaging system To ensure that the cocoa powder arrives to customers in perfect condition, it must be transported in a safe and protected manner. For this reason, the packaging system must work at a high performance level. The goals for Barry Callebaut were to increase automation and thus process reliability, improve the product presentation and use less packaging material. In addition, the packaging had to be able to protect the cocoa powder against high temperature and air humidity. As both the Euro pallet (800 mm x 1,200 mm) and the GMA pallet (Grocery Manufacturers of America) (1,015 mm x 1,215 mm) are used, the packaging system must be customisable for different pallet sizes. Barry Calle-
Modernisation of the packaging line As general contractor, BEUMER Corporation in Branchburg, New Jersey (USA) installed a complete packaging system, various conveying systems as well as a bagging system. With partner Behn + Bates America, a division of Haver Filling System, Inc., BEUMER equipped the line with the Integra system, a fully automated, completely premounted bagging system for bulk materials in the food industry. This system fills bags with cocoa powder and seals them. As part of the quality control process, the BEUMER belt conveyors transport the bags to a metal detector and a checkweigher. Here, bags containing metal or over- and underweight bags are rejected. After the palletising process, the stack press removes residual air from the bags, thus

increasing the stack stability. When designing the packaging line, the handling of different batches on different-sized pallets was one of the challenges. For this reason the high-capacity BEUMER robotpac was installed providing excellent stack quality and load stability. Commissioning of the high-capacity packaging system The innovative BEUMER stretch hood is also part of the scope of supply. This high-capacity packaging system pulls a stretch hood over the palletised bag stack to protect the products against wind, rain and dust while providing ultimate safety during transport. The bag stack is completely packaged and transported to the take-away post. Thanks to the permanent tension force of the film in vertical and horizontal direction, the bag stack provides high stability - even if the cocoa powder settles in the bags, thus reducing the bag volume. Sensors on the BEUMER stretch hood measure the height of the pallet. This automation allows for the calculation of different stacking heights as well as the optimisation of film consumption. The film is then cut and sealed. The formed hood is pulled over the complete bag stack forming a stable unit. More safety and less film consumption Since the modernisation, the workflow at Barry Callebaut’s packaging facility runs without any problems. The products are protected against wind, rain and dust. Besides the packaging capacity, the stretch hood technology provides improved visibility of the palletised products thanks to the smooth surface of the film hood. The material costs for packaging have been reduced since five to ten per cent less material is required, making this solution not only more cost effective for Barry Callebaut but an important contribution toward safeguarding the environment. www.beumergroup.com
Packaging line of the year In 2009 Barry Callebaut LLC became the fifth recipient of PMT’s annual Packaging Line of the Year Award for its endof-line packaging solution. Companies from the packaging industry, which use innovative and sophisticated packaging lines, are awarded with this prize. The award-winning packaging line designed by BEUMER and Behn + Bates is an example for good cooperation with suppliers worldwide. The result is pioneering technology, environmental consideration and innovative design. Barry Callebaut LLC accepted the award at a special conference at PACK EXPO in Las Vegas. Organiser and sponsor of the prize is the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI). This organisation consists of more than 540 companies, which manufacture packaging systems and packaging-related machines in the United States and Canada.

TECHNICAL SERVICE KEEPS PLANTS UP-TO-DATE MODERNIZING AND EXPANDING EXISTING PLANTS INCREASES THE EFFICIENCY AND SAVES COST Plants in the food industry can produce high quality products for decades as long as they are regularly updated. Doing so doesn’t always require extensive modernization work; however, it does require a constant dialogue with the plant manufacturer
T
he After Sales Service department of Zeppelin Systems GmbH looks after most plants for as long as they are in use. The team not only takes care of regular maintenance work but also updates plants for today’s and fu-
ture challenges. These Revamping projects are an everyday challenge and encompass simple tasks like changing mechanical parts such as pipes or valves or even optimizing an entire plant, which can also mean exchanging a complete silo.
Projects are often driven by new legal requirements (e.g. ATEX), changes in the Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health, new hygiene standards or changes in the EC Directive on Machinery (e.g. energy efficiency). The Revamp-

ing team also gets involved when a new product or a new recipe is planned to be processed in the plant. Another common case: A plant has been operational for two years already and the daily routine unveils handling bottlenecks. This happened in a cookie production plant in Saudi Arabia where the dosing of glucose/syrup mixture was done by hand – a sticky task that was hard to control. “Of course it doesn’t make sense to redesign the whole plant for that,” explains Martin Faller, Head of Key Components & Customer Service at Zeppelin Systems. “We integrated an automated dosing system instead that added the automated batch tracking as a bonus feature on top.” This application is a good example of how a small customer request can develop into a substantial Revamping order. “We learn through experience that the plant operators are often not involved enough at the planning stage of the plant,” says Faller. Many Revamping projects provide the opportunity to optimize the plants for the local requirements while implementing measures to improve productivity.
tleneck, the buffer vessels were enlarged and equipped with special discharge screws that had an integrated mixer with intermittent operation. This led not only to an increase of throughput but also to a reduction of clotting and sticking, putting an end to the frequent plant downtimes. Another good example are plants in the Middle East, where fluctuations in quality hinder the continuous supply of raw material. This is often countered by an increase in silo capacity which, in turn, leads to Revamping programs. The same tendency is true for Europe, although here the driving factor is fluctuation in price rather than in quality, but the demand for Revamping projects is just the same.
Whole-grain flour presents new challenges Sometimes consumer trends trigger Revamping projects. The Brandt group employs more than 800 people in three locations in Germany. Brandt is the market leader in Germany with a share of 80% of the zwieback business and sells its products worldwide – six million zwieback toasts a day, along with crispbread and chocolate. 60 tons
of zwieback are produced every day in the Ohrdruf (Germany) plant close to Gotha near Erfurt, Thuringia. Zeppelin Systems (formerly Reimelt) supplied this plant twelve years ago and since then, the maintenance team around the technical director Steffen Keichel has been taking care of maintenance, optimization and operation. In 2012,
Simply update the mechanics Many Revamping projects are initiated in order to upgrade the control technology, usually from the Simatic S5 to the S7 system. “Operators are used to software changes, but who thinks about updating a discharge aid? Mechanics can be brought to a whole new level just as well,” Faller claims. There was a project where originally just a recipe change was planned. This required changing the powdered sugar dosing from one line to two. In the end, not only were the old steel vessels exchanged for stainless steel ones but the filters as well to meet the ATEX requirements. In order to eliminate a bot-

Brandt approached Zeppelin Systems in order to adjust the plant to new demands from the market. “The content of whole-grain flour had increased year after year,” reports Keichel. Until then, the wholegrain flour required had always been weighed manually and added to the dough. This was feasible but very labor-intensive and always prone to human error, requiring additional strict control that used up time reserved for other tasks. Therefore, changing the dosing and weighing of whole-grain flour from manually to fully automatic was necessary. “We designated an existing silo to whole-grain flour and modified it accordingly,” says Keichel, describing the plant integration. The silo is 16 meters high, has a discharge unit and an additional separate sifting machine. Diverter valves were changed and pipes newly routed. “This might sound relatively simple, but on top of all mechanical integration work, the silo and the new diverter valves had to be integrated into the programming and visualized in the user interfaces,” he explains. Brandt gladly relied on Zeppelin Systems for the planning and realization of the Revamping. “Zeppelin Systems knew the plant in and out, making the silo integration a
very fast job,” says Keichel. Thanks to perfect preparation and planning and a very experienced team, the Revamping was completed in less than three days. Today the production planning is done more flexibly and manual weighing is history. “We have not only gained new freedom in planning and are more flexible in production, we also have more time for other tasks now,” he adds while praising the excellent cooperation. “I am sure we will turn to Zeppelin Systems again when another project such as this one arises.”
Trust is everything From a customer’s view, Revamping projects are less time-consuming than rebuilding complete plants, which requires substantially larger investments and often causes production downtime. Zeppelin Systems is convinced that Revamping is the logical consequence resulting from the long-lasting and very close relationship with their customers. “We stay close to the customers from the very beginning of the plant to its end,” says Faller and adds: “We did that even long before the term lifecycle management was coined.” For Faller, Revamping is not just a department
in an organization. “The basis for our Revamping projects is the trust of our customer and our constant dialogue with him. Often enough plant operators don’t know what technology offers today.” Zeppelin has the vast experience of the most unconventional solutions realized in more than 1,000 plants world-wide. Operators can count on getting the best solution possible.

has always been satisfying customer’s needs, even if it requires high levels of product’s customization and quality. The company has a long story of positive results. It was founded in 1964 by three partners, and thanks to the experience they gained in building and designing machineries and plants in the USA, they firstly began to serve the foundry sector. Year after year the company has slowly improved the production range, by supplying products in more and more sectors of application, such as food, pharma, chemical and pet-food sectors, and to different types of customers. In 2000 the company becomes a family-owned com- pany, and with the ownership also the company view changed, in order to become more and more customer oriented. Recently the company has enlarged its target markets abroad, by suppling goods and establishing business relationships in many European countries. For the coming years its main goal is to continue to supply high quality solutions to its customers, with the support of its selected partners. Efficiency and Effectiveness are the key-words. “Ideas, Projects and Solutions in order to provide our customer with the best possible product.”

simulation systems. Engineers interact with the mechanical production department, and fol- low all the production phases up to the assembling, the start-up and the commissioning of the machine in customer’s premises.
The company studies each production process of its customers, in order to provide them with the best solu- tion, not only in terms of productivity, but also in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. This allows GVF Im- pianti to be able to project the entire systems’ functio- ning and management logic.
PED COMPLIANT PRODUCTS In order to improve the production quality and to control all the production processes internally, GVF Im- pianti Srl has decided to request and obtain the WPS (Welding Procedure Standard) certification.

Indeed, the management strongly believes that the in-house production of products is part of the company’s strength, because it allows products customi- zation and quality controls for the entire production system. SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT GVF Impianti is also able to provide a complete service of in-house industrial automation, for its machineries and its complete turnkey plants, thanks to an internal software development department, which follows and studies all projects in order to provide the best solutions. The software development department takes care of the software project and the mechani- cal automation project. It also follows the creation and assembly of control, power and monitoring panels. Moreover, in order to offer the best possible solution in terms of industrial automation, our company has established some important partnerships with major global powerhouses such as Siemens. This resulted in a fundamental quality guarantee and improvement. DENSE PHASE PNEUMATIC CONVEYING SYSTEMS The dense phase pneumatic conveying system transports the product at low speed, using a small amount of air and reducing the energy consumption. GVF Impianti’s technology prevents contamination between the transported materials thanks to a process control that executes cleaning cycles every product’s change. DISTINCTIVE MARKS OF GVF PNEUMATIC CONVEYORS GVF Impianti Srl has developed during the years mainly four types of pneumatic conveyors, which sati- sfy different needs: GA, GC, GA COMBO and GA-A. GA type is
suitable for the transport of normal wearing materials, is designed with an inlet butterfly valve and is supplied complete of electro-pneumatical panel in box. GC type has been developed to convey particu- larly abrasive material, thanks to the special inlet cone valve designed by GVF Impianti, which guarantees a high resistance to wear. The conveyor is supplied complete of its electro-pneumatical panel in box too. GA COMBO type has the same features of GA type but it is studied to be compact, economical and modular, really useful if the available space is reduced. Its distin- ctive mark is the electro-pneumatical panel installed on board the vessel. Finally, the GA-A type is suitable if it is necessary to weigh the product before the transport. Indeed, it is equipped with load cells and with a load control unit, which allows to create batches of product just before the transport.
high temperatures and high performan- ce pneumatic conveyors HP type, for long distances and big hourly capacities. Finally, all GVF Impianti’s pneumatic conveyors offer the following advantages: automatic execution, low wear, reduced product breakages and un-mixing, low air consumption, efficient product/air ratio, low opera- tional and maintenance costs. PNEUMATIC CONVEYING COMPONENTS AND EQUIPMENT In the pneumatic conveying systems’ production range GVF Impianti produces also all the pneumatic conveying components (such as pipeline’s boosters, pinch valves and wear-resistant bends) and diverter valves (two-ways diverter valves and multi-ways diver- ter valves).
But, what distinguishes all these pneumatic conveyors from the competitors is the special design of some components and the unique air distribution system. Indeed, all GVF Impianti’s pneumatic conveyors are equipped with outlets made in cast iron, and further strengthen by a thermal treatment. In addition, the out- let unit is equipped with spilt flanges made in cast iron too, which allow to have an easy directing of the outlet pipe.
Indeed, very interesting are the two-ways diverter val- ves which are mainly divided in 3 types: DAS, DP and Y. The two-ways diverter valves DAS type are studied to be installed on the top of the silos, in order to divert the product between more silos or to become a ter- minal box made in a wear-resistant material. DP type allows to divert the material from one to two ways, and is particularly suitable for abrasive products. Y type is equipped with two pinch valves, and allows to select between two ways.
Very important in terms of performance is also the exclusive uniform air distribution system, which di- stributes the compressed air in three main parts of the vessel: in the outlet, laterally and in the central part.
But, if the number of ways in which the product should be sent is higher than two, GVF Impianti has developed a very interesting multi-ways diverter valve DS type, which allows to divert the material flow up to 12 destinations.
GVF Impianti Srl can supply on request also pneumatic conveyors for

ISO CERTIFICATION FOR DINNISSEN PROCESS TECHNOLOGY
W
ithin the markets where Dinnissen operates, customers place high demands on process and technology knowhow and applied solutions. Dinnissen plays a leading role here as a supplier and sets itself goals to safeguard this position. In addition to continuously innovating customer-centred products and solutions, Dinnissen has worked hard in recent months and achieved its goal of full ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 27001:2013 certification. Quality “As an organisation we’ve shown continued steady growth for years,” says Operational Director Wouter Kuijpers. “This has convinced us that our success has resulted from customer focus, ongoing innovation and striving for quality.” Among other things, this comes from the long-standing relationships that Dinnissen maintains with its customers. In the past, there were various reasons for not deciding to go for ISO 9001 certification. However, owing to the standard’s new ‘High Level Structure’ (HLS), now is the moment to demonstrate that the processes within Dinnissen meet the requirements of ISO 9001:2015. For existing and future customers, this certification will endorse the fact that quality and continuous innovation are fundamental to Dinnissen’s DNA. Environment Dinnissen’s environmental management system is an important tool for formalising principles and monitoring
progress. This way of working should lead to the organisation being raised to a higher level in the environmental field. Dinnissen sets a high priority on the environment. This is evidenced, inter alia, by the fact that an environmental management system has been set up in accordance with the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard. However, managing environmental risks and reducing environmental impact are not separate tasks; they form part of Dinnissen’s day-to-day operations. This is why environmental management is integrated within the ‘High Level Structure’ quality management system. Information security The general sharing of information is playing an increasingly important role in our society. The expectations within Dinnissen are that information security will therefore become an increasingly important aspect, not only for our society but also for our business operations. The management of Dinnissen has chosen not to wait until it is forced to take measures by the market but to react pro-actively. “In order to demonstrate to stake holders such as customers, suppliers and employees that we take this very seriously, we have certified our information security management system in accordance with the requirements of ISO 27001: 2013,” says Wouter Kuijpers. Obviously, the Dinnissen
organisation must continuously comply with statutory requirements, covenants and guidelines in the area of quality, environment and information security. However, Dinnissen goes one step further. “As an organisation we want to be and remain a reliable partner for all stake holders. The ISO certification will contribute to this end,” states Wouter Kuijpers. About Dinnissen Dinnissen Process Technology is the specialist in handling and processing bulk materials. NEW LABORATORY MIXER FOR THE FOODSTUFFS AND PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRIES – EXPANDED R&D CENTER
M
TI Mischtechnik presents an all-new line of laboratory mixers developed for the pharmaceutical and foodstuffs sectors. The design corresponds to these industries’ very exacting hygiene requirements; the systems can nevertheless be flexibly adapted to the special needs of diverse applications. The model shown at stand 1-254 in hall 1 was configured at the request of an industry leader who will use it for recipe development in dairy processing. A further highlight is MTI’s UT 250 vertical universal mixer having a working volume of 205 liters; this unit, too, is built to a very high standard. In addition, MTI presents the latest capacity expansion of its R&D Center that will provide further flexibility gains in developing customer-specific machine configurations and in implementing pilot production runs. New laboratory mixer for elevated hygiene requirements The MTI laboratory mixer premiered fulfils elevated hygiene requirements, whether in homogenising different recipe ingredients or as a friction mixer for carrying out thermal processes. The energy input is adjustable over a wide range via the machine’s rotational speed and hence, the

peripheral velocity of the mixing tool. Moreover, the mixture can be tempered by water via the mixer’s double jacket. Thus, the application range of the new laboratory mixer covers broadly diverse process tasks, including coating, agglomerating and vacuum drying. The food-grade model provides a vessel volume of 10 liters at a working volume of 2 to 8 liters. The laboratory mixer’s design allows an easy scale-up to industrial operation for
recipes and processes developed to volume production standard. Its outer parts and all surfaces in contact with the mixture are made of stainless steel 1.4541, with the latter industrially ground to a grit 1200 high-quality finish. At a drive capacity of 5.5 kW, the rotational speed of the individually configurable mixing tool can be variably selected between 300 rpm and 3,000 rpm adequate to circumferential speeds between 3.7 m/s

and 37 m/s. For additional flexibility in the laboratory the mixer can be moved on casters. As has been standard on MTI products for many years, the new laboratory mixer features a clearly structured touch panel and a Siemens S7 control for manual and automatic operation. Still more versatility in developing for and with customers For a number of years, MTI – with its excellently equipped in-house R&D Center – has been on record as a particularly efficient partner in the development of tailor-made mixer technology. With its most recent expansion, the company’s laboratory provides more scope, e.g., for trials on a larger production scale, as well as a dedicated area for testing under ATEX conditions plus special rooms for mixing products subject to a high contamination risk. Since October 2016, MTI’s experienced team has been reinforced by process engineer René Weiffen, who brings additional expertise to the task of resolving R&D challenges for, and with, MTI’s customers. Ulrich Schär, General Manager at MTI, comments: “With the launch of the new laboratory mixer for particularly exacting hygiene requirements

KORE FRUTTI DI SICILIA

ver 50 Sicilian farms came together to form Kore Frutti di Sicilia, a company founded with the express purpose of cultivating pomegranates according to innovative methods imported to Sicily from Israel. Today, the Kore member producers are working on 160 hectares of land over 7 Sicilian provinces, and have expanded their range to include mangoes and avocados. The founding members all shared the following goals: to create a network, to form successful partnerships, and to establish an agribusiness supply chain in which nothing was left to chance. This chain would encompass the selection of genetic traits for the cultivated plants; the promotion of environmentally friendly techniques to minimise the use of plant protection products and help reduce water consumption; the standardisation of cultivation techniques; a thorough fruit selection process; and partnerships with processing and logistics companies and, most importantly, distributors. One such distributor, Valfrutta Fresco S.p.A., has been selling premium fresh pomegranates since 2014. Kore is also a member of APO CONERPO, one of the largest producer organisations in Europe and the most important producer organisation in Italy, representing 6,700 producers across multiple cooperatives in Italy’s most prolific fruit and vegetable growing regions. These cooperatives are dedicated to planning and managing the production of fresh fruit for national and foreign markets, including several specialising in organic produce.

In 2019, the Kore group is preparing to move into the international market: over 1,200 tonnes of fresh pomegranates will be harvested between October and December (with an estimated harvest of 3,000 tonnes for 2021), and the range of natural juices and nectars will be expanded to include 12 different products starting in the spring, all obtained from produce selected and grown in Italy. The agribusiness supply chain is not yet complete, with other pomegranate-based products due to launch into the market by summer. The company is also refining the manufacturing processes to ensure that all the by-products of industrial processing are used in a sustainable manner: the pomegranate seeds and skins will not be discarded after pressing, but will instead be used to create products for the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry. www.consorziokore.it
The Kore group has now moved into the processing sector, represented by Kore Trading S.R.L. After several years working on the production and sale of frozen natural pomegranate juice, as well as constant research and development to create new products, Kore Trading
S.R.L. was launched into the Italian national market with two finished pomegranate-based products. Kore pure pomegranate juice and pomegranate nectar are made from the Wonderful variety, which is known for its quality and sweet and

omexi, specialist in solutions for the printing industry and the conversion of flexible packaging, received a recognition for its flexographic innovation technology in the FlexoTech International Print & Innovations Awards ceremony, with two awards in the Flexible Packaging Narrow Web and Flexible Packaging Medium Web categories going to two of its European converters. Organized by Whitmar Publications, a company founded in 1989 which is a leading specialist publisher in the commercial and packaging printing markets, the Flexo Tech awards celebrates, as other awards celebrations in the flexible packaging sector, the very best of what the flexo industry has to offer. Companies from around the world presented the best packaging to be evaluated by an international panel of judges on reproduction, degree of difficulty and print quality, in 15 different categories. The prizes were presented in the Royal Lancaster hotel in London, where 15 Gold awards and one Supreme award were given. Two of the prizes were awarded to products printed with the leading flexographic technology of the Comexi F2 families and the Comexi F4, which encompass the best technological solutions, demonstrating that the company always offers the most innovative solutions which are competitive and efficient in responding to the high demands of the market. The French company BRJ (Palamy Group)
obtained the Golden Award at the Flexible Packaging Narrow Web category for ‘Marie Risotto aux Champignons de Paris’, printed with a Comexi F4. The jury noted that it was “extremely challenging: disappears the vignettes on the high screen with very small dots and an intelligent use of the fixed colour palette”. An European player associated with Palamy, BRJ, with over 80 years of experience, is a specialist in film processing for automatic packaging. Their areas of competence are flexographic printing, laminating and slitting. Uniflex CJSC, a company located at Belarus also took a Golden Award in Flexible Packaging Medium Web for ‘Gotovim Vmeste Spices’, in this case printed with a Comexi F2 MC 10 colours. “Clever and good use of colours to enhance the gamut and obtain vibrant results. Very small highlights and clean text with sharp edges”, said the judges. Uniflex is a full cycle
flexo printing house, the leader of the Belarusian flexo printing market and one of the largest printing companies in the CIS. They create innovative solutions in packaging and labelling for food, chemistry, cosmetics, and other industries. “We are proud to see that the efforts that Comexi has continuously invested in flexo innovation since we started manufacturing flexo presses back in 1954 have been proven to be effective and see how our customers can be recognised through their designs. Several patents in Register Control and in the Doctor Blade Chambers in the Inking System, makes that the Comexi printing presses obtain the smallest dot gains, the most accurate registration and consistency through the whole length of the job, in the flexible packaging industry”, says Raúl El-Fakdi, Flexo Brand Manager from Comexi.

LABELLING SOLUTIONS FOR FOOD TRAYS
O
n the back of its extensive experience in the labelling and coding sector, ALTECH offers industrial labelling machines for all sectors featuring rapid and efficient application at highly competitive costs. To meet the coding and labelling requirements of the food sector, ALTECH has produced a line of labelling machines purposely designed for flat products (food trays mainly) used to preserve an extensive variety of foodstuff. This line is called ALbelt, successfully traded in Italy and abroad by the company. It is a compact and completely automatic linear system equipped with one or more labelling heads of the series ALstep or ALritma, depending on the best configuration required by the application. The most classic configurations can be found in the systems for top labelling, top and bottom labelling, angle and U- labelling, typical of the seals of the trays commonly used to preserve fresh products such as pasta, meat, salad,
and more. For bottom labelling, the system is provided with a two-section conveyor with a label dispenser blade installed between the two sections, or a high-adhesion side belts system to lay the lower part of the product for labelling. Highly flexible and with expandable and totally customisable components, ALbelt can also be configured as to meet any labelling requirement. As well as applying one or more labels on various parts of the product, ALbelt can be used for more complex applications, such as applying overlapping labels (to propose a discount or special offer) or making a non-stop system for continuous labelling. This picture shows a configuration made up of three ALritma labelling heads for the application of two labels on the upper side and one on the lower side of vegetables trays. Due to the uneven surface of the products, the two upper ALritma heads are equipped
with an air-jet applicator for no contact application to moving trays. The lower and the first upper heads are also fitted with a printer module for printing variable data. Rounding off the system is a downstream adapter by rotary brushes, which ensures optimum adhesion of the label to the product surface. The ALstep/ALritma labelling heads can also be equipped with thermal transfer printers to apply variable data, such as best before dates, barcodes, and other useful information. ALTECH Srl is a leading Italian company specializing in the production of labelling machines and material coding and identification systems. Based in Bareggio, near Milan, it counts subsidiaries in the UK, the USA and South America, as well as over 80 distributors who offer sales and support in five continents. Frutmac only offer high-quality stretch, plateau, top-seal and flowpack films in order to guarantee the best product protection while maximizing its shelf life. QUALITY AND FUNCTIONALITY FROM ICE-CREAM PACK
T
he high quality, user-friendliness and eye-catching decoration of the sleek EasySnacking™ pot from RPC Superfos are key factors in its selection for a new range of ice-creams from Russian manufacturer Taice. Thanks to In-Mould Labelling, it is possible to show the texture of the ice cream in razor-sharp photo quality on the packaging. This is complemented by the striking purple colour of the lid that catches the consumer’s attention. Overall this smart look of the EasySnackingTM pot makes the product stand out on shelf. In addition to these powerful colours and smooth design lines, the inte-
gral spoon of the handy EasySnackingTM pot is a key feature for Taice. The spoon is neatly separated from the ice cream, and easy to grasp under a tear-off label in the lid. Taice made the vital packaging decision in collaboration with Denis Komarov, the company representative at UnipakCentr. “The Taice ice cream is of excellent quality so it was important to find a packaging solution on a matching quality level,” he explains. “In the EasySnackingTM pot, we found what we were looking for. We value the entire packaging solution, but the spoon deserves a special mention. It is sturdy, convenient and
perfectly in tune with consumer demand for an easy sweet treat.” Taice is a new player in the Russian ice-cream market. The delicious varieties – including blackcurrant, raspberry, cherry, chocolate, strawberry and sweet condensed milk – are sold to end-users through food markets, cinemas, pizzerias and gas stations. “People who have enjoyed the Taice ice-cream from the EasySnackingTM pot tell us that they like it very much,” concludes Denis Komarov. “We do get a lot of positive feedback, both in respect of the quality and taste of the ice cream, and in respect of the packaging solution.”

OFFICINA MECCANICA SESTESE (OMS) 70 years of activities; special lines and machines for the packaging sectors
T
his text takes us through the 70-years of one of Italy’s machinery manufacturers Officina Meccanica Sestese (OMS) right from the beginnings up to the present day.We want to illustrate how what was a small artisan company has become an important engineering company with more than 10 branches and representative companies around the world. FOUNDING THE COMPANY 70 YEARS AGO Officina Meccanica Sestese was founded in 1949 by Maurizio Rossi and Luigi Cristina, during the difficult period after the second World War. At that time, the company’s activities were dedicated to equipment and accessories for furnaces for the production of bricks. OMS’ products soon had an important place in the market, and in 1958, new premises were opened in Arona (NO), where, the production of equipment for furnaces continued with new technology. In 1971, OMS patented the ‘Forca Artiglio’ for the handling and transport of bricks, with sales covering five continents. Following on from this important growth, and newly developed products, the new premises in Paruzzaro (northern Italy, near Novara), were inaugurated in 1980. During 1990, OMS designed and manufactured the first strapping head - the R10 - the cornerstone product that has enabled Officina Meccanica Sestese to become the leading reference company in the sector for automatic strapping.
DEDICATED TO THE PACKAGING SECTOR Since then up to the present day, a number of new machines have been designed and built: heat shrinking and stretch hooding machines, wrapping machines, new modular strapping heads, as well as strapping machines specifically for the paper and cardboard packaging sector. Last but not least, the development of special lines dedicated to other sectors. Working in the most diverse productive and applicative sectors
has increased considerably OMS’ global reputation, leading it, today, to become an engineering company with more than 10 branches and representative companies around the world. The cornerstones on which OMS is founded are its history - of course - as well as its vast number of technological solutions, combines with solid relationships with clients who want to invest in strategic technology for their production processes, and therefore require

partners that are well-prepared and who are able to provide machinery with guaranteed reliability over time. OMS is, in fact, able to offer a complete series of machines and plants for end-of-line packaging, such as strapping, stretch & shrink hooding, wrapping. RESPONDING TO THE MARKET WITH RELIABILITY, EXPERIENCE, FLEXIBILITY Reliability, experience and flexibility are three important characteristics that enable OMS to respond to today’s market demands, from the most simple strapping machine up to the most sophisticated packaging plant. All this is made possible thanks to OMS’ many years working in this market sector, as well as the large number of ad hoc solutions studied for its clients. The important results achieved by the company are also thanks to three generations of businessmen who have continued

to be involved closely with the market, with the vision of a future characterized by innovation and continuous improvement. 2019 AND THE FUTURE OMS is now undergoing a phase of transformation from a high level ‘artisan’ company to an industrial enterprise, involving a series of organizational, design, commercial and production choices, aimed at guaranteeing – more and more – top-level service to its customers
and consolidating its position in its target markets. During this renewal process, OMS will also celebrate its 70th year of foundation with a series of actions and events specifically thought of for this important moment Our motto: “Because looking back, we don’t always remember all the steps of our journey, but we recognize the footprints we have left. And we look ahead to our new goals.” ww.omsspa.com

NEW PACK 403 FOR MEDIUM TO HIGH SPEED BOSCH LAUNCHES FULLY-AUTOMATED, NARROW HORIZONTAL FLOW WRAPPER
• Improved user experience thanks to decals and scales on the machine • Upgraded cross-seal and fin seal units enhance performance
• Removable discharge belt enhances machine efficiency by ejecting
faulty products
B
osch Packaging Technology has launched the first machine of its next generation of flow wrappers on the European and Asian markets – the Pack 403. As the successor of the Pack 401, the Pack 403 is a fully-automated horizontal flow wrapper for medium to high speed wrapping. The narrow machine is ideal for wrapping bars and biscuits, as well as chocolate, cookies and crackers. It features a removable discharge belt, upgrades to the cross-seal and fin seal units,
and a highly intuitive, user- centered design. “Our new Pack 403 offers mid- to large-sized manufacturers a fully- automated packaging solution that is exceptionally easy to operate, clean and maintain. This minimizes downtime and increases Overall Equipment Effectiveness,” says Fransien de Ruijter, product manager at Bosch Packaging Technology in Schiedam, Netherlands. The Pack 403 is designed to produce up to 800 packages per
minute at a film speed of 90 meter. Supported pack styles include pillow, gusseted and easy-to-open packs. User-friendly design for easy handling User-friendly and easy operation was in focus for the Pack 403`s design. Clear signage, instructive decals and setting scales on each component facilitate changeovers between products and minimize waste and downtime caused by “trial-and-error” adjustments.

The cantilevered discharge belt is one of the Pack 403’s key features: being removable, it is exceptionally easy to clean. Its detection function rejects faulty packages and automatically ejects them using compressed air. For even more user-friendliness, the film tower has an easy-to-adjust pivot arm and sequentially numbered film rollers for easy film threading have been added. The Pack 403 also comprises an automatic film splicer with clear instructions to secure fast and smooth film changes without having to stop the machine. Improved film control and sealing units Compared to the previous machine series, several updates were made to improve process efficiency and film control, including as standard the servo-driven power feed roller to optimize film tension and tracking. The new fin seal unit consists of pressure-controlled fin wheels to eas-

ily adjust the machine when running a variety of products with different films. Due to the cut-out deckplates each package now passes over the fin wheels more closely, which results in even tighter packages. “Operators are now able to remove the fin foldover unit without tools and have full access to the cutting head area for cleaning and maintenance, which increases OEE,” says de Ruijter. The cross-seal unit in turn stands out for its narrow cutting head, which operators can manually open up for cleaning and clearing using a hand wheel. Air and fork gusseting is available for gusseted packages. In a final step, the mechanically driven overhead roller tightens the package seals on the discharge belt station. Fully-automated packaging solutions in high demand on Asian market The Asian biscuit and bars markets in particular are booming. “According to our research, the biscuit market
is growing by 5.3 percent, while the bar and chocolate market records a 3 percent growth rate. Manufacturers throughout the region are turning to fully- automated processing and packaging equipment in order to increase productivity and keep up with consumer demand,” de Ruijter explains. As a global provider, Bosch Packaging Technology understands the different regional market trends and customer requirements. The new Pack 403 not only offers a high level of quality, performance and reliability, but also provides access to global comprehensive customer services, e.g. the regional service hub in Thailand. Bosch is exhibiting the Pack 403 at ProPak Asia in Bangkok, Thailand, June 12 to 15, 2019 and at FachPack in Nuremberg, Germany, September 24 to 26, 2019. www.bosch.com

In these factories it is particularly important that the floor does not become slippery during the processing of the meat and can be easily washed. When several livestock units arrive at the slaughterhouse every
hour, the need for a safe, clean and fast slaughtering process is well understood. The staff who carries out the various steps of the work must be able to move around without worrying about slippery floors, especially in the slaughter room. Furthermore, the floor must be cleaned perfectly and quickly at the end of the work. The Klinker floor with epoxy resin sealing is certainly the best choice in this context. In the slaughter room, capable of processing 50,000 livestock units every year, the flooring plays a vital role, especially at the upper floor. Here, cattle from the whole Piedmont plain area arrive, mostly belonging to the breeds Piemontese cattle, Blonde

ing, from the dairy companies to the meat and fish processing companies, from the food companies to the wine industry and so on. Working in so many sectors made us realise how essential is the flooring cleaning. Fratelli Faccia realised it too because working in accordance with the Italian and European regulations is a matter of priority. Here the staff realises hygienically safe products in accordance with
the manufacturing instructions and the company policy, caring about the company environmental impact and monitoring their carbon footprint and the correct waste disposal. In accordance with the IPPC directive, Fratelli Faccia have adopted a system for the prevention and integrated reduction of pollution through regular controls. Their strong work ethic leads them to apply the health and safety regulation in all work places, to train their staff to health and safety at work and to decline any service or supply that could imply the workers exploitation. In order to comply with the present Quality Policy, every year they set strict targets to reduce anomalies and to get better hygienic and working conditions. And the Mombrini flooring has a fundamental role to make them reach these targets. www.mombrini.it

FROM FRUITLOGISTICA 2019, FUTURPERA LAUNCHES THE THIRD EDITION
IN FERRARA, ON 28 - 29 - 30 NOVEMBER 2019
A
n event with an ever more interesting programme awaits the pear sector in 2019, with the third edition of FuturPera – International Pear Salon, the only exhibition in Europe that is dedicated to the whole production cycle of the pear. This is what emerges from the press conference that was held on 6th February at the ITALY stand – which is managed by CSO Italy – with figures that highlight the constant and sig-
nificant growth of the event, which testifies to a wide-scale interest in the sector. The second edition already recorded a 30% growth in terms of attendance and companies that took part, compared to the first edition, with over 10.000 visitors and around 120 qualified and specialised exhibitors in all the departments of the pear production cycle, not only from Italy, but from other European countries as well, especially Holland and Germany.
The third edition of Futurpera, which will be held in Ferrara in the renovated halls of the Exhibition Centre from 28th to 30th November 2019, confirms the importance of the World Pear Forum, an international conference that is organized in conjunction with CSO Italy, which in the last edition recorded the presence of over 3.000 farmers and experts of the sector. The World Pear Forum 2019 will focus on major themes linked to pear growing, ranging from technical and production aspects to financial

and marketing ones, and touching on the themes of import, export and internationalization. There will also be important technical meetings organized by the exhibiting companies which will enrich the programme with a more in-depth look at various matters of great interest. Futurpera proves to be an important event due to its uniqueness and authority with the presence of the most important players of the sector at a global level. Thanks to its reputation, the 2019 edition will welcome buyers from the biggest national and international large-scale distribution channels from Germany, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Dubai, Bahrain, South Africa and Chile. The 2019 edition will also devote ample space to consumers, in order to understand their requirements and reach out to them with the right communication tools and promotional campaigns. The consumption of pears in Italy is on a slight but constant increase (CSO Italy data) after the crash of the early 2000, however new consumers must be gained and the penetration index of the product into Italian and European families must also increase. These are the themes that will be dealt with during Futurpera 2019, trying to reach consumers during the three days of the exhibition with promotional activities that will involve the whole town of Ferrara, which is, to all intents and purposes, the “European capital of the pear”.
IN SHORT
in terms of figures alone, because above all, we want it to be useful to the sector. Which is why we are aiming to strengthen the idea of FuturPera as a veritable forum on pear growing: innovation, markets and promotions of a top of the range national product will be our guidelines.” “The exhibition dedicated to pears in Ferrara – Paolo Bruni, CEO of CSO Italy emphasises – is also a great opportunity for the town, which takes on a central role that it is fully entitled to along with Modena, Bologna and Ravenna in the pear growing sector, which we are the leaders of on a world-wide scale”. Regarding the importance and role of Futurpera, Mauro Grossi, member of the OI Pear Committee, confirms the supporting role of the event on behalf of the whole production cycle, from production to consumption: “Pears – Mauro Grossi declares – are not simple to produce, preserve, package, market, distribute, and finally consume. A time of discussion and exchange of information about techniques and experiences is the basis of any serious revitalization project of the sector”. The President of the Chamber of Commerce of Ferrara Paolo Govoni – underlines that: “In addition to the extraordinary quality of the product to which the exhibition is dedicated, the success of Futurpera is also due to the strong integration of the exhibition with the system of businesses
that operate not only in the fruit and vegetable sectors, but also in many other fields including the hotelier sector, and the catering and services sectors. The Province of Ferrara – the president of the Chamber of Commerce continues - is the cradle of pear growing at a national and European level. Ferrara, in fact, is the first province for the production of pears with over 200.000 tons, over 40% of the production of the Emilia-Romagna Region, i.e. around 30% of all Italian pears”. “The increasing importance of Futurpera enhances the Emilia-Romagna production system – Simona Caselli, regional councillor for Agriculture, hunting and fishing states – as it is an important production area with around 70% of Italian pears grown, and over 20% of European ones. Pear growing is a cultivation that communicates an important message to consumers, thanks to the use of production systems that have a low environmental impact, and the employment of innovative processing and packaging techniques. These aspects must be taken up by marketing initiatives to support consumption and seek new markets. The effectiveness of marketing depends on the support of the activities of the Organizations of Producers (OP) and their Associations (AOP) and of the Inter-professional Organization (OI) which are the cornerstone of production and marketing management”.
“After the extraordinary edition of 2017 – Stefano Calderoni, CEO of FuturPera declares - we have set in motion a large-scale campaign aimed at listening to the needs of all the players in the production cycle. Our intention has never been to organize an event that is measurable

YOUR EVERYDAY WORK IS TOUGH ENOUGH
Understanding the market’s needs is the most important part of creating the perfect product.
T
he first step to achieve this is to recognize the threats and demands of the industry. Food processing workplace is a very specific one - constant necessity of quality control, contact with sharp and dangerous tools, food parts and liquids is the everyday struggle of the people working in food processing environment. And yet, the last but not least component - time. Every producer strives to combine these elements in order to achieve the high quality product manufactured in the shortest period of time possible. Everyone who struggles with this challenges sooner or later realizes that the final score depends on every component of the process - it is highly important to use only the tools which were created especially for this kind of jobs. That’s what OHAUS company takes for its first priority - creating the tools that will help their customers become the leaders in their class. When asked about the company’s main foundations in creating new products, Zbigniew Pobocha, General Manager, says:“For more than 100 years OHAUS is trying to make people’s job easier. The first question that we ask ourselves while creating a new product is, who is going to use them. Then we gather information about those people line of work. Creating the scale for Food Processing Industry is one of the most difficult tasks. We have to think about every possible situation that can threaten our scales’ operability. But in the end it’s really satisfying to create something that will make Customers work faster and easier - their everyday job is tough enough and they should not have to worry about damaging
their scale simply by spilling the liquid on it. I trust that after all the years we have finally succeeded - our Customers are highly satisfied with our new Valor 2000 and 4000 scales, created especially for food processing jobs.” OHAUS latest proposal for food industry jobs are Valor 2000 and 4000 Compact Bench Scales, certified and highly resistant. Looking at their features it is clearly visible that they are the perfect tool for the food processing. The designers of the scales have considered the need of Valor’s 2000 and 4000 resistance to the sharp objects, commonly used in the food processing activities - the scales are equipped with polycarbonate knife proof keypad. It prevents damage from knifes, repealing stains, moisture, corrosive fluids and food contaminants. The scales’ Flow Thru Design protects the scales from fluids and condensation that may form inside the scale from constant temperature changes
in typical food processing environments. The Valor 2000 and 4000 scales are NSF Certified and have OIML/EC Type Approval. All those combined features make the Valor Compact Scales safe, fast and highly durable. Designed especially to endure in the harsh food processing jobs, they are certainly the right tool for the toughest jobs. www.ohaus.com OHAUS manufactures an extensive line of high-precision electronic and mechanical balances and scales that meet the demands of virtually any weighing need. The company is a global leader in the laboratory, industrial, and education channels as well as a host of specialty markets, including the food preparation, pharmacy and jewelry industries. OHAUS products are precise, reliable and affordable, and are backed by industry-leading customer support.

HYDROSOL AT IFFA 2019
COMPLETE SOLUTIONS FOR MEAT, SAUSAGE AND PLANT-BASED ALTERNATIVES
T
oday’s consumers think nothing of eating meat or sausage one day and plantbased alternatives the next. Meat producers are adding vegetarian and vegan products to their product lines, but regardless of whether they are meat or meatless, foods can be successful only if they have the taste and texture consumers want. That’s where Hydrosol helps. This provider of all-in solutions for meat and sausage products and vegetable-based alternatives is presenting its expanded product range for industrial and artisan producers at this year’s IFFA. Solutions range from stabilisation and texturing, to seasoning and freshness preservation, to sausage casings and breading, with the focus on plant-based trend products and “free from” solutions. Current consumer trends show that plant-based alternatives remain a topic of great interest, in part because they have clear advantages over meat in terms of sustainability and animal welfare. Accordingly, Hydrosol is continuing to expand its range of plant-based vegan products. One example is the HydroTOP VEGAN SF series. This allergen- and soy-free system based on potato and pea protein helps manufacturers make a wide range of products, from cold cuts and salami to bacon. The system also makes it easy to produce plant-based snack foods. This lets food manufacturers meet the rising demand for healthy, goodtasting snacks and position themselves in a further growth segment. “The Plant Kingdom” is one of the top trends of 2019 according to Innova Market Insights, and is also influencing conventional meat products. Ground meat and sausage specialities enriched with grains and superfoods like legumes or seeds have a healthy image, and appeal to new target groups. Hydrosol has developed the HydroTOP High Gel range for these meat and vegetable hybrid products as well as for all-vegetable burgers. It lets marketers emphasise ecological and

ethical benefits, along with economic advantages. The High Gel range can also be used to make fish alternatives. Another plus point is that the High Gel range simplifies the manufacture of reduced-fat products, addressing another strong trend that has high social relevance given the drastic worldwide increase in obesity. Along with fat reduction, salt reduction is also becoming more and more of an issue. Hydrosol has developed functional systems that enable the manufacture of sodium-reduced sausage and red and white meat products. The company is also presenting new developments for freshness preservation. IFFA visitors can learn more about these and other highlights of Hydrosol’s portfolio at Booth B 81, Hall 12.1. hydrosol.de

eyond clean label Clean label has been a major trend in the food industry for the past decade, with food and beverage manufacturers keen to highlight that their products are free from synthetic ingredients and additives. But today’s consumers are looking for more. They want to know what is in their food, not just what isn’t. They want their food to be made of recognisable natural ingredients and they want to know where those ingredients came from. This desire for more transparency is leading to a massive upsurge in clearer labelling. So, while Innova Market Insights found in 2014 that a quarter of all food and beverage launches featured clean label claims, it also identifi ed greater transparency – a shift from ‘clean to clear’ - as the top labelling trend for 2015. In tune with this trend, Lycored offers Real Food Ingredients made from 100% tomato, enabling formulators to label products with reassuringly simple food declarations that all consumers will recognise. What’s more, its verticallyintegrated business model guarantees farm-to-fork transparency and traceability. Lycored uses its own specially bred non-GMO tomatoes, carefully grown on farms in California and Israel. Once the tomatoes are harvested, a proprietary extraction process is used to remove the delicate pigments, fi bres and serum from their pulp as effi ciently as possible. Honest goodness The unique non-GMO tomatoes bred by Lycored are naturally four times higher in lycopene than standard tomatoes. They are also rich in naturally occur-
ring taste compounds, including glutamate, which is an amino acid. Lycored’s Real Food Ingredients range builds on the goodness of these tomatoes to enhance the taste, colour and texture of food, while also providing an inherent nutritional advantage. There are four product types available from Lycored, as follows: • SANTE - this taste enhancer provides a high concentration of the naturalcompounds that produce umami (the fi fth taste) and kokumi (the Japanese word for deliciousness). SANTE accentuates existing fl avour characteristics while remaining taste neutral. • Clear Tomato Concentrate (CTC) a concentrated serum with a savoury character that offers balanced sweetness from 60 brix combined with higher acidty than SANTE, which creates a smooth balancing taste effect. In tomato-based products, it also increases tomato taste intensity. • Lyco-Fibers - these modify the pulpiness, viscosity and mouthfeel of sauces, soups and meat products. The unique, authentic texture they provide cannot be achieved reliably using other texturisers. They lend products a
pleasant pulpy fi bre mouthfeel, without the slimy consistency of formulations that rely on alternative stabilisers such as gums and starches. • Dry Tomato Pulp - this combines a fresh, vibrant and consistent red colour with a stable texture for red sauces, ketchups and soups. Its fi bre content can add to the health credentials of a naturally-positioned product. It also works well as a natural colourant and texture improver in meat-based products such as sausages, in which many food colourants or starches are not permitted. 4 dimensions of goodness, from our tomato

SANTE - natural deliciousness Available as a liquid or powder, SANTE provides naturally occurring umami and kokumi tastes with a low sodium content. Umami, meaning ‘delicious taste’, is also known as the fi fth taste – after bitter, sweet, salty and sour – and its savoury, meaty character is detected via the taste receptors for glutamate. Kokumi, meaning ‘rich taste’, provides balance and a hearty mouthfeel. Kokumi is delivered by foods with the right combination of amino acids. Importantly, SANTE manages to combine both of these attributes with a clean and clear label. Manufacturers may declare SANTE as ‘tomato concentrate’ or ‘natural fl avour’, according to local regulations. SANTE is taste-neutral, with no overt tomato taste, so it can be used to boost the fl avour of both sweet and savoury products. It is ideal for use in soups, sauces and marinades and in its powdered form it can also be applied as part of a seasoning mix for products such as potato chips and extruded snacks, and in spice blends for meat products. Low dosages of between 0.15 and 0.7% are suffi cient to deliver a highly accentuated taste experience, and SANTE is stable across a wide range of temperatures and pH. As well as providing all these positive attributes, SANTE enables formulators to reduce or eliminate a range of ingredients with negative labelling connotations, such as MSG, ribonucleotides, yeast extracts and hydrolysed vegetable proteins. In addition, thanks to its ability to enhance the salty fl avour of products, SANTE allows a reduction in sodium from salt by 30 to 50% in some applications. The secret of SANTE lies in the high levels of naturally occurring glutamate in Lycored’s specially bred tomatoes. Glutamate occurs naturally at high levels in many delicious foods, such as ham and Emmental cheese, Nori

seaweed and scallops. Lycored’s special breed of tomato is also a rich source of natural glutamate. It has an amino acid concentration of almost 9%, of which 32% is natural glutamate. Clear Tomato Concentrate - smooth fl avour CTC is a clear liquid that acts as a natural taste improver for food, bringing a smoother character to savoury products such as soups, condiments and sauces. It can also intensify the tomato character of tomato-based foods and act as an extender for tomato paste, which can be expensive. CTC can be declared as consumer-friendly ‘tomato concentrate’ and, like SANTE, it gives formulators a way to reduce or eliminate their use of less attractive ingredients. It is stable across a range of pH and temperatures. It is colour-neutral and besides delivering a better taste and cleaner label, it can also produce a browning effect for a more appetising appearance in foods such as pies and pastries. Lyco-Fibers - authentic texture Formulators can modify the pulpiness, viscosity and mouthfeel of sauces, soups and meat products naturally using Lyco-Fibers. Not only do they deliver a cleaner label, but they also carry the positive benefi t of fi bre content. Their high stability means that Lyco-Fibers do not undergo syneresis when used in sauces. In addition, while alternative stabilisers such as gums and starches can lead to a slimy consistency, Lyco-Fibers deliver an authentic vegetable fi bre texture. Lyco-Fibers also improve the juiciness of meat products and prevent burning of the meat when barbecuing. Dry Tomato Pulp - visual appeal with fibre Lycored’s Dry Tomato Pulp is perfect for formulators looking to produce tomatobased sauces, soups and dips with a fresh and vibrant ‘made from scratch’ look, taste and texture that remains stable throughout a product’s shelf-life. It also suits meat products such as sausages. The pulp delivers a fresh, consistent, natural red colour thanks to its high lycopene content, combined with an authentic pulpy
texture. It also contains fi bre and can carry a consumerfriendly ‘crushed tomatoes’ or ‘tomato concentrate’ label within the EU. Conventional tomato pastes can be inconsistent, which may lead to formulation challenges. In contrast, Lycored’s Dry Tomato Pulp provides reliable, consistent, repeatable results. It also permits the removal of starches from sauces, leading to a shorter ingredients list. Benefi ts of Lycored’s Real Food Ingredients at a glance: • Foodstuff label declaration • Cleaner label and a shorter ingredient list in many applications • Stable across a range of pH and temperatures • Allergen-free • Kosher and Halal • Fibre content • No added glutamates • Non-GMO • Vegan Inherent goodness – naturally Lycored is an international company committed to ‘Cultivating Wellness’ by harnessing the nutritional potential of nature using cutting edge science. The result is a growing portfolio of natural ingredients and products that formulators and – just as importantly - consumers can recognise and trust. Lycored’s fi rst ‘hero ingredient’ was lycopene, which has been clinically proven to help support general health and, more specifi cally, heart, skin, prostate and female reproductive health, among others. As global leaders in natural carotenoids for food, beverage and dietary supplement products, Lycored’s experts are constantly developing new fortifi cation blends using lycopene to support relevant health claims. Beyond this, simply including Lycored’s natural tomato ingredients allows customers to provide an ‘inherent goodness’ or betterfor-you positioning for their products. Established in 1995, Lycored is based in Israel, with sales and production operations in the UK, Switzerland, the US, Ukraine and China. www.lycored.com

PROTECTING PILSNER URQUELL AGAINST CYBER ATTACKS
I
n times of Industry 4.0, the subject of cyber security is of elementary importance for producers in the food industry. The example of the Pilsner Urquell brewery shows how the first step towards further cyber safeguarding of industrial plants can be taken via a security audit by Kaspersky Lab without disturbing ongoing production operations. The prestigious Czech brewery Pilsner Urquell, established in 1842, is the leading brewery enterprise in Central Europe. It employs a workforce of around 2,000 in three breweries, eight bottling/packaging lines and 13 sales and distribution centers. Pilsen, where the brewery company is based, is world-famous as the “birthplace” of Pilsener beer. More than two thirds of the beer produced throughout the world has been inspired by this beer type and is sold under the name ‘Pils’, ‘Pilsner’ or ‘Pilsener’. Pilsner Urquell is, so to speak, the original source of Pils beer. From 1999 onwards the brewery belonged to the SABMiller Group, (at the time South African Breweries). In agreement with the regulatory authorities (before Anheuser-Busch InBev was allowed to take over SABMiller in October 2016), Pilsner Urquell – without specific geographical regions – was sold to the Japanese brewery group Asahi on 31 March 2017.
Technology development means a continuous process at Pilsner Urquell. A number of inde- pendent audits have been conducted in the company in the past years. When the IT Depart- ment wanted to change over from PC single-user solutions to a virtualized, serverbased mas- ter system connecting all systems and items of equipment, the company saw a specific need for action – to examine relevant IT security aspects. System conversion presents new challenges with regard to security The main motivation for carrying out a cyber-security examination – also known as Cyberse- curity Assessment (CSA) – consisted in examin-
ing the infrastructure in the end phase of the conversion project for IT security aspects. In addition, the project also includes virtualizing the production systems and upgrading the main network components of Operational Technology (OT). A further challenge is to determine the core themes and requirements of the future pro- ject as regards an endpoint security solution. The goal was quite clear – all production facilities of Pilsner Urquell were to be protected against possible targeted cyber-attacks and attacks against enterprises closely connected with the business. “What was important to us was to be prepared for all unexpected incidents, to review our OT infrastructure and to set up a plan for securing the industrial net-

work together with the experts from Kaspersky Lab”, explains Jan Šik, Chief Engineer at Pilsner Urquell. The objective of the industrial CSA project was to render the production lines and all OT-related software and hardware immune to cyber-attacks and to set up the company in such a way that a holistic, industrial cyber security strategy can be implemented. Prior to conducting the security assessment (CSA), the greatest challenges with regard to in- dustrial cyber security were the complexity of the OT infrastructure (two areas – brewery and bottling, each with quite different infrastructures), the connection to external business systems and the launch of the new production line which had recently taken place. If you know your weaknesses, you can protect yourself Pilsner Urquell decided on the industrial CSA by Kaspersky Lab, which consists of a minimal- invasive remote and on-site Cybersecurity-Assessment. The advantage of this is that Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity Assessment does not affect ongoing operations. Industrial processes can continue to run. The experts from Kaspersky Lab began the industrial CSA process with an infrastructure audit and the development of a threat model. The industrial processes at Pilsner Urquell are divided above all into the fields of brewery and bottling. This involves two breweries and beverage tank sectors (cylindricallyconical fermentation tanks, CCT) and eight packaging lines within the production plant in Pilsen.
IN SHORT
Kaspersky Lab examined the most critical areas of the infrastructure. For this specific attack- vectors were re-enacted in order to reveal gaps in security and subsequently examine the systems for malignant activities and anomalies. In their examination of the company network and the associated industrial sectors, the experts discovered externally developed corporate software that revealed dangerous security gaps – security gaps through which the OT installations could be attacked very easily. In the industrial sector of the brewery the IT security experts even discovered a Zero-Day vulnerability for SCADA software. Furthermore, measures were taken to identify any uncontrolled external con- nections in and from the shopfloor level. At the end of the infrastructure audit, Kaspersky Lab provided Pilsner Urquell with an overview of all the weaknesses and security gaps discovered, such as weak authentications, SQL in- jections and the like. This also included a detailed analysis of how these could be exploited. Furthermore, Pilsner Urquell received a description of the attack vectors discovered and con- firmed that could be disastrous for the continuity of operations and integrity of the company’s industrial processes. Protect properly – analysis provides recommendations for action Based on the results of the audit, in a next step the experts from Kaspersky Lab developed a threat model in order to develop recommendations for action which the company could imple- ment. Such a final report plays a crucial role – it contains recommendations for future meas-
ures in the field of cyber security for specific industrial components and techniques in order to eliminate vulnerabilities. Recommendations for Pilsner Urquell were for example se- curing update and password guidelines, as well as strengthening the network and web appli- cation security. “The analysis has provided us with important recommendations for the security life cycle and given us essential findings regarding the weaknesses in the security process. The final report from Kaspersky Lab has provided us with several possible improvements”, summarizes Miro- slav Zajíc, IT Analyst at Pilsner Urquell. This strategic approach to industrial cyber security shows the company further paths to be taken in future regarding its own IT security. “On the basis of the CSA results, we now plan to implement the Kaspersky industrial cybersecurity solution for network connections and servers together with Kaspersky Lab”, concludes Miroslav Zajíc. Kasten Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity is a portfolio of technologies and services that offers com- prehensive protection for each individual level of industrial systems, including SCADA-servers, HMI, EngineeringWorkstations, PLC, network connections and staff. W
ould you drive a track race car on a road full of potholes? That’s pretty much what is happening when your high-quality packaging machines are connected with poorly designed conveyor lines. In 40 years in the conveyor business we have seen this happening more often that we would like. For a company like M.H. Material Handling this is painful, considering the passion we put in giving the best possible value to our customers. Should we compare a packaging line to a living organism, conveyors are like the nervous system AND the circulatory system at the same time. They deliver the product to feed the machines off course, that would be the blood which powers the organs, but the way they do deliver these products is like the signals that the body receives from the neural system. A badly delivered signal to one organ can jeopardize the whole body. As a company we are fully aware that the technology beneath conveyors is not rocket science, but at the same time the amount of “know how” needed to correctly design an efficient conveyor line is huge and achieve it takes long years of experience on the job. For this reason we decided to launch in the next months an informative programme to share knowledge and awareness on the “conveyor culture”. The contents will be available on all our Social Network’s pages under the brand of ConveyorU. In time all the

The whole campaign will be presented like a TV Show with Series and Episodes to identify the progression of topics. It will have basic, advanced and expert segmentations, in order to be useful to the widest range of individuals as possible, from the line operator to the project manager.
The Nominal Speed is the one at which a conveyor must be set in order to have all the products on it touching each other, like a train’s wagons. If we call L the length of a rectangular product or D the diameter of a circular one it’s very easy to calculate the nominal speed:
It will be available in different forms: slide show, text or video, to allow anyone to consume the contents in the way they find most convenient. Just
Vn=(L×P)/1000
Let’s give a glimpse of what ConveyorU will be introducing the first topic of the basic level: Nominal Speed of the Conveyor.
Where P is the productivity rate expressed in products per minute. The
result will be a speed in meters per minute, typical unit of conveyor people! This is the MINIMUM speed required to achieve the productivity rate without having products overlapping. In an ideal world they would travel on the conveyor without any gap between each other, but even without touching. Obviously due to friction, layout of the conveyor and other external factors the reality is always different, that is the reason, or at least one of the reasons, why the design speed is always higher than the nominal one. The typical situation is to set a design speed of 1,5 to 2 times the nominal speed. The gap between the products, if the pace is regular which is not always the case, is between halt to the full length of the products, usually enough to be able to have sensors discern one product from the other and devices to operate on them. www.mhmaterialhandling.com

A wider exhibition area to satisfy the demand by major Food and Bevage technology suppliers - Expected 20% increase of national and international visitors. This is the picture of Cibus Tec, the highly specialized vertical show by Koeln Parma Exhibitions, the JV between Fiere di Parma and Koelnmesse, dedicated to food processing and packaging technologies on show in Parma (Italy), from October 22 to 25, 2019. Cibus Tec further broadens the technologies on show, processing and packaging for fruit and vegetables, milk, dairy and meat and adopts an expansion strategy on new sectors: secondary packaging and technologies for beverage, bakery, confectionery and snacks, thus becoming the only and most complete Italian exhibition platform dedicated to food and beverage technologies. Beyond the facts, also the figures are growing: Cibus Tec means: + 20% exhibitors (over 1,000 in 2016) + 30% international exhibitors (representing over 400 brands) and more than 3,000 international qualified top buyers from 70 countries. Expected 30,000 Italian visitors and 15,000 international visitors, growing 25%. 8 Months before the opening, 70% of the exhibition area is completed. These important achievements by Cibus Tec also result from the strategic alliance with Koelnmesse that has
reinforced the internationalization process and contributed to promote the “Made in Italy” technologies beyond borders, contributing to exports: for example, the Italian exhibitors have grown by 11% in Anuga FoodTec and by 14% in Prosweets Cologne. Thanks to the collaboration of Koelnmesse
and Fiere di Parma, Cibus Tec is now part of the world largest permanent exhibiting platform for food and food tech: together with Anuga, Cibus, ISM, Anuga FoodTec, Prosweets Cologne and 12 other exhibitions in the portfolio, the community brings together over 11,000 companies.

FOOD TRENDS AT POWTECH 2019 PNEUMATIC CONVEYING GETS POWDER AND BULK SOLIDS MOVING
T
he POWTECH trade fair, which goes into its next round in Nuremberg from 9 to 11 April 2019, showcases all the diversity and innovative strength of the mechanical processing sector. This makes the international fair the leading forum for the industry in Europe and an unmissable event for developers, planners and production managers from the food and animal feed sectors. As well as mechanical processes, the fair also covers accompanying steps like the transport and handling of powder and bulk solids. POWTECH 2019 is complemented by a comprehensive supporting programme.
In food and feed production, the pneumatic conveying of powder and bulk solids is of key importance for both the quality of the products and the overall cost effectiveness of the processes. Manufacturers of blowers and vacuum systems have responded accordingly and at POWTECH will provide interesting insights into the latest developments in respect of availability, air quality, plug & play solutions, energy efficiency and integration into Industry 4.0 concepts. Rugged, energy-saving conveying Wolfgang Hartmann, Head of Marketing at Kaeser Kompressoren, says: “For the pneumatic conveying of bulk solids in the food industry we are seeing the continued widespread use of rotary lobe blowers. This is no doubt due to the fact that rotary lobe blowers are ideal for this application thanks to their rugged design, reliability and durability, exactly what the industry demands of these components. Hartmann also had this to say about energy requirement and cost efficiency:

“Because energy efficiency is of course also playing an increasingly more important role, our rotary lobe blowers fitted with our efficient, low-pulsation three-lobe OMEGA rotors are the ideal solution for these requirements.” Performance and status at a glance For the transport of bulk goods in food production, increasingly more stringent requirements are being imposed on the quality of compressed air. This is why POWTECH exhibitors like Kaeser offer a specially designed range of accessories for air drying and cooling. In addition, many exhibitors are focusing on complete solutions in keeping with the trend towards plug & play for pneumatic conveying. At POWTECH, Kaeser will be showcasing its compact rotary lobe blowers up to 200 kW with integrated electrics and electronics. “These compact solutions offer plant operators ease of commissioning and maintenance. Blowers with integrated controls achieve considerable savings for planning, installation, commissioning, data communication and certification,” says Hartmann. “Another major benefit is the integrated Sigma Control 2 controller. It not only makes the entire machine efficient, but continually monitors and transmits its performance and status data, completely in keeping with Industry 4.0 concepts. This guarantees maximum reliability and availability combined with high energy efficiency. Another 415 exhibitors at POWTECH will be presenting their innovations specifically for food and feed production. A total of 800 companies in the six exhibition halls at POWTECH provide a globally unrivalled range of technologies and solutions for processes like pulverising, mixing, separating, filtering, agglomerating and associated work flows.
managers from the food industry will also benefit from a comprehensive supporting programme that is highly tailored to their sector. On three days of the fair, the “Expert Forum Chemicals + Food” in Hall 2 will provide a non-stop programme of presentations on topics like dosing, explosion protection, compressed air supply or handling. The same hall is also the venue for the special show “Dust knows no borders” organised by the VDMA Group Air Purification and Drying Technology. It will demonstrate that there are indeed options available for limiting dust using innovative filtering and separation systems that are often digitally supported. A new feature at POWTECH 2019 is the Networking-Campus for bulk solids technologies and markets of the future. The international PARTEC Congress for Particle Technology will take place parallel to POWTECH 2019 and expects to welcome more than 500 delegates. It is sponsored by VDI-GVC (Association of Process and Chemical Engineering).

IFFA 2019 - HOT TOPIC: FOOD SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES FOR SAFER FOOD
F
rom 4 to 9 May 2019, leading international companies will be presenting their latest technologies at IFFA and providing information about the most important trends and developments in the meat-processing industry. Of central importance are, above all, solutions designed to ensure greater food safety. In the run-up to the trade fair, we interviewed Richard Clemens, General Manager of the Food and Packaging Machinery Division of the Association of German Machine and Plant Manufacturers (Verband Deutscher Maschinen und Anlagenbau – VDMA), about food safety issues. The manufacture of safe and hygienically acceptable products is a matter of top priority in the butchering and meat processing trades. Year on year, recalls of foodstuffs are on the increase in this industry too. Where do most of the dangers spring from? Micro-biological contamination, foreign bodies, inadequate labelling, together with violations of limits with regard to controlled and banned ingredients are, according to the German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL), the most common sources of complaint. Subsequent investigations have almost always thrown up the same picture, namely that the causes can be overwhelmingly traced back to human negligence, less frequently to technical failure. And, unfortunately, there are black sheep in every sector, who deliberately flout the legal regulations with thoroughly criminal energy, in order to gain advantage for their business. In effect it amounts
to food fraud. How can we exclude the risks of microbiological contamination – or at least reduce them? The meat-processing industry remains heavily dependent on manual handling. As a result, people continue to be the greatest hygiene risk as far as the transmission of germs throughout the value-creation chain is concerned. Principally in areas where there is direct contact between the workforce and the products. An important step towards greater food safety, therefore, is to replace manual activity with automated processes as extensively as possible. One example of this is the fully automated portioning and insertion of fillets, steaks and cold cuts into the packaging by means of dispensing units and industrial robots. Reducing human input into the process is one approach. What technical measures can be taken, in addition, to avoid contamination of meat and sausage
products from microbial germs? First and foremost, consistently applied hygienic design of appliances, apparatus, machines and plant is absolutely crucial in maintaining hygiene. The basis for this is formed in statutory regulation, such as the machinery guidelines and food hygiene regulations, as well as the recommendations in the guidelines set out by the EHEDG [European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group]. These prescriptions are aimed at essentially constructive measures. It is all about avoiding dead spaces, undercuts, depressions and crevices, because that is where the remains of products are most likely to collect and provide the ideal breeding ground for microbial infestation. Hygienic Design is, however, also about making machinery and plant cleaner-friendly, so that they can be cleaned more easily, more thoroughly, more quickly and in a way that is more sparing of resources. It also involves ensuring that cleaning materials and disinfectants can drain off unhindered.

CONFERENCES
Foreign bodies in food are also often the cause of recalls. To what extent can these be prevented with the technologies that are available today? Contamination with foreign bodies in meat and sausage products can occur anywhere along the entire production chain. From a broken knife in the cutting room, for instance, or an overlooked screw or sealing gasket during unplanned maintenance or repair work. Other sources of this kind of contamination are material failure and bits of the machinery or plant breaking off as a result of wear. Foreign bodies can be picked up by means of an inspection system with, say, metal detectors or X-ray equipment. Metal detectors are an efficient and cost-effective way of picking out ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as plastics or plastic film containing metallic powder, in both food and packaging. More frequently than metallic foreign bodies, however, it is things like stones, glass, bone or plastics that appear in products. And this is where X-ray technology can be used, as it offers a broad spectrum of tests for almost all types of foreign body. Used in combination with weight
IFFA FP 2-19.indd 5
checks, it is possible to monitor several criteria at the same time in both packaged and unpackaged foodstuffs. So that, as well as contamination through glass, stone, ceramic or metal particles, aberrations with regard to completeness, weight and adequate quantity or correct shape can also be identified. In practice, we link both monitoring systems to a rejection system, in order to remove contaminated or deficient products from further processing stages automatically. Constant documentation of the data that results from checks and measurements constitutes a major step in the direction of traceability and a valuable aid to identifying the source of faults in the production process and putting in place appropriate remedial action. But all these measures do not protect us against food fraud. How can manufacturers ensure greater food safety and authenticity in this area? That requires an extensive catalogue of measures. Over and above the requirements for self-monitoring outlined above, a universal, digitalised, tamperproof traceability system needs to be
put in place. Furthermore, we need to establish regularly documented assessments of any weak points, together with risk analyses specifically with regard to dangers posed by food fraud. These need to be implemented along the entire value-creation chain from raw material to end product, in conjunction with the appropriate HACCP concepts. This also requires very close cooperation, based on a relationship of trust, with official bodies, testing and certificating bodies, as well as research institutions. Another component of the guarantee of greater food safety and protection from food fraud is technological analysis. Traditional analytic procedures are too complicated, laborious and, above all, time-consuming. The fight against food fraud, on the other hand, demands flexible, sufficiently accurate and above all rapid testing methods that are mobile and can be used continually in-line. One example of this is non-invasive NIR spectroscopy. Quality and identity of goods delivered can be monitored in a few seconds as they are checked in, even with products packaged in glass or trays. www.iffa.com

hree key figures to characterize the Iraqi market: Value of own food and beverage production US$ 2.917 billion, food imports US$ 6.333 billion and hundreds of millions of US$ invested annually in modern processing technology EUROMAP country cluster plastics confirms high double-digit annual growth for Iraq
It’s been only a few months, that iraq agrofood & plastprintpack was presented for the first time. But already now more than 90 well-known exhibitors from 15 countries have signed-up, ready to display their products, solutions and technologies. A great result for a launch event in Iraq. Organized by the German trade show specialists fairtrade in cooperation with their Iraqi partners Home Land Events the show is scheduled for 15-17 April 2019 at the Baghdad International Fair Ground. The event enjoys the strong support of the Ministry of Trade of Iraq and its subsidiary institutions, the State Company for Iraqi Fairs & Commercial Services and the Baghdad International Fair Ground. iraq agrofood is Iraq’s 1st International Trade Show on Agriculture, Food Processing & Packaging Technology and Food & Hospitality whereas plastprintpack is Iraq’s 1st International Plastics, Printing and Packaging Trade Show. What makes iraq agrofood & plastprintpack 2019 so unique? • Not less than 4 country pavilions are

present already in the launch event, namely from Germany, Iran, Sri Lanka and Turkey. • Additional countries are represented with leading individual exhibitors coming from Austria, China, France, Germany, India, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Turkey and United Arab Emirates. • Strong presence of international market leaders in crop and animal production, food, beverage and packaging technology, food & hospitality, plastics raw materials and plastprintpack technology. • The interactive agrofood & plastprintpack portals allowing exhibitors and visitors to communicate and to arrange business meetings before, during and after the event, all year round. Three key figures to characterize the Iraqi market Currently, the Iraqi market can be characterized by three key figures. The value of its own food and beverage production amounts to US$ 2.917 billion. Food imports add up to US$ 6.333 billion. (FAOSTAT) And hundreds of millions of dollars are invested annually in modern agrofood & plastprintpack processing technology. A unique concept: iraq agrofood covers the entire value chain from field to fork iraq agrofood consists of the 3 subbrands iraq agro, iraq food + bev tec and iraq food + hospitality. • iraq agro for crop production, agricultural technology and animal husbandry. Interestingly, Iraq, with 547 million € between 2012 and 2016, is the Middle East’s second largest importer of agricultural machinery. Right after Saudi Arabia (716 million €), and well before Iran (464 million €) and the UAE (319 million €).
(VDMA German Engineering Federation) • iraq food + bev tec for food & beverage process and packaging technology, bakery & confectionery, food and drink ingredients. From 2012 to 2017 Iraq imported 524 million € worth of food and beverage processing and packaging machinery, making it one of the five largest buyers of such technology in the Middle East. (VDMA) A clear signal of the political will to expand local food production and the „Made-in-Iraq“-trend. Continuous growth is expected in the coming years. • iraq food + hospitality for food, beverages and foodservice. The value of Iraq’s own food and beverage production amounts to US$ 2.917 billion in 2014. In the same year Iraq imported US$ 6,333 billion worth of food and agricultural products. (FAOSTAT) plastprintpack iraq: The EUROMAP country cluster plastics confirms high double-digit annual growth for Iraq Iraqi imports of plastics machinery
amounted to 126 million € between 2013 and 2017, of packaging technology to 212 million € and of printing technology to 103 million €. (VDMA) Since all but 1% of all plastics raw materials are imported, mainly from the Middle East, Asia and Europe, the Iraqi market has great potential for commodity exporters. Between 2007 and 2015, the import of plastic raw materials grew by 35% annually, from 9 kt to 99 kt, a plus of one thousand percent! The country’s plastic consumption shows an annual growth of 31% over the same period. It has grown 11-fold from 15 kt in 2009 to 169 kt in 2018 and is estimated at 218 kt in 2020. 54% of plastics consumption is accounted for by packaging, 23% by the construction industry, 4% for electrical, electronics and telecom, 3% for automotive and the remainder by various items. Running until 21st February, Gulfood 2019 comes as global consumer spending on food and non-alcoholic beverages climbed USD600 billion to reach USD7.2 trillion in 2018 - equating to 8.6 per cent of worldwide GDP according to the Gulfood Global Industry Outlook Report 2019 produced by Euromonitor International, which will be released at the show. And with the Outlook Report predicting Africa and the Middle East will drive global population growth from 7.6 billion in 2018 to 8.5 billion by 2030, the 24th edition of the world’s largest annual food and beverage trade show will welcome the world as Dubai solidifies its strategic position as a trade gateway linking established Western markets with core growth markets of the East. As a tailored platform for F&B specialists from all corners of the globe,
Gulfood 2019 will cover more than 1,000,000 square feet of DWTC exhibition space as over 5,000 local, regional and international exhibitors converge to launch thousands of newto-market products and solutions to meet emerging trends and shifting consumer choices. Government delegations and trade ministers During five days of frenetic trading and negotiating, top-level envoys from 120 countries will be showcasing the latest range of products across the key F&B market sectors, including three first-time country pavilions namely, the European Union, Bulgaria and New Zealand, highlighting Gulfood’s farreaching appeal as the industry platform for trading. “Gulfood is the largest annual food and beverage trade fair in the world,” said EU Commissioner Phil Hogan. “It is only natural for the EU – the world’s
leading exporter and importer of agrifood products – to be so visible here thanks to the presence of its Member States and the EU pavilion. This event is a great opportunity for the business people from the UAE and all over the world to find out more about the EU’s excellence in producing authentic and safe food to the highest quality standards.” Additionally, new individual country participants include Guatemala, Iraq, Luxembourg, Maldives, Nepal, Norway, Papua New Guinea and Tanzania. Capitalising on Dubai’s strategic position as a re-export hub for the region and beyond, Gulfood 2019 has once again attracted high-calibre participation from North, South, East and West, from the Americas to Australia and further afield. Jaclyn Symes, the Minister for Agriculture, Regional Development and Resources in the state of Victoria, who will lead a delegation from the Austral-

ian state of Victoria, added: “We’ve set an ambitious target to grow our food and fibre exports to $20 billion by 2030 and we’re well on our way to achieving that thanks to our innovation and hard-working farmers. As the food and beverage capital of Australia, we’re proud to put Victoria’s premium produce on world’s largest stage at Gulfood. “International markets such as the UAE are critical to the success of our agriculture sector,” added Symes. “Our imports to the Middle East have seen an increase of 24 per cent over the past year and our presence at Gulfood highlights our strong commitment to the region. We have 36 Victorian food and beverage companies and producers joining this mission.” Innovation Summit & Tastes of the World top new features bill With a three-decade history of linking global food trade through Dubai, Gulfood 2019 will house a range of interactive features designed to reinforce the show’s enabling role in raising the international food industry forum bar. Running alongside the main exhibition, the three-day Gulfood Innovation Summit will see some of the biggest names in the industry, leading thought leaders and major disruptors to examine the latest challenges and opportunities facing the industry in a diverse range of keynote sessions and panel discussions. Tastes of the World is a unique platform to demonstrate the diversity of cooking to a captive and engaged audience,” said Chef Manal, who is known as the ‘Queen of the Arabian Kitchen’. “I’m really excited to be joining such an illustrious line-up of chefs bringing global tastes to Gulfood - it is an honour to put Arabian cuisine
in the spotlight.” Other new features at Gulfood 2019, which is being held under the theme The World of Good. The World of Food, include Tea House, which will demonstrate the versality of tea with masterclasses, tasting sessions, food pairings and other insights; Barbecue Masters, which features live cooking contests and demonstrations by world-renowned chefs and open-fire pit masters, and the first-ever Gulfood International Culinary League, a oneday competition where four teams of world-renowned chefs will take on the challenge of preparing world-class cuisines. BEVIALE MOSCOW 2019
RENEWED GROWTH AND UPBEAT MOOD AT EASTERN EUROPE’S TRADE SHOW FOR THE ENTIRE BEVERAGE CHAIN
F
or the fourth time, from 19 to 21 February 2019, Beviale Moscow offered players from the Eastern European beverage industry a central platform at Moscow’s Crocus Expo. The around 6,200 trade visitors (some 5,300 in 2018) from 47 countries were in good spirits and showed a keen interest in the 164 exhibitors (146 in 2018). The trade fair for the beverage industry pursues a holistic approach and covers the entire process chain from manufacture to marketing. This year it was bigger than ever. Following the successful event, Thimo Holst, Project Manager Beviale Mos-
cow, voiced his satisfaction with the KPIs: “With this fourth round, Beviale Moscow has once again taken a significant step forward. It has grown even more and is bigger than ever this year!” But it is not just the size that matters. “We are delighted that despite the somewhat more difficult market conditions, more and more exhibitors are recognising and wanting to tap into the significant, undisputed potential of the Russian and Eastern European beverage industry.” This was also reflected in the many exhibition stands displaying numerous exhibits and in some cases large installations. “The
good mood at the venue underscores the positive and connective nature of Beviale Moscow,” adds Holst. Some 97 percent of the exhibitors polled were satisfied with their participation in the event. Beer, pivo – the amber nectar at its best Beer and brewing was a key topic once again this year. The official presentation of the Russian beer prize ROSGLAVPIVO, which was launched at Beviale Moscow 2017 by the Barley, Malt and Beer Union in collaboration with Private Brauereien Deutschland e. V., is set to become a tradition on the first day of the fair. 80 brewer-

ies entered 300 different beers into the competition, that is almost twice as many as in the previous year. The gold, silver and bronze awards were awarded in 24 categories. For more about ROSGLAVPIVO and a list of the 2019 winners go to: www. rosglavpivo.com. The established CRAFT DRINKS CORNER, which partnered once again this year with the Association of Beer and Beverage Market to showcase the diversity of hand-crafted beverages, was well frequented. Visitors were able to taste the latest types of beer from 20 breweries and also learned about the special features of each brewing process and the manufacture of craft drinks in general. The three-day VLB Seminar for Microbrewers, which is organised by VLB, the Berlin-based teaching and training institute for brewing and took place parallel to the trade fair for the fourth time, also focused on hand-crafted beer and specific technological and qualitative aspects of the brewing process. Wine, soft drinks, beverage packaging – other highlights in the supporting programme From suitable raw ingredients and custom technologies to efficient packaging, logistics or creative marketing ideas: with its holistic approach, the trade fair offers solutions for all segments. For example, at the Pavilion for Wine Production & Manufacturing, various wineries provided insights into cultivation, production, bottling and marketing. Each day, a different Russian wine region took centre stage: the Taman peninsula, Crimea, Dagestan. The Pavilion was organised in partnership with leading players in the Russian wine market:

Union of Russian Winemakers, Simple Wine and imVino. The conference programme explored various topics including the criteria for quality wine. Another seminar focused on the statutory regulations for alcoholic drinks and discussed how the legislation can be complied with but also improved. On the topic of soft drinks, presented by the Union of Producers of Soft Drinks and Mineral Water, six speakers gave interesting talks on trends and prospects for the soft drinks market. In the Packaging Innovation Zone, the trade fair partnered with PETnology to provide visitors with food for thought, background information and proposed solutions for drinks packaging. The World Packaging Organisation also participated in the Packaging Innovation Zone. The conference programme included discussions on the future of PET, labelling and sustainable packaging. Outlook for 2020 Project Manager Thimo Holst is already looking forward to the next round of Beviale Moscow: “Again we already have some ideas up our sleeve for further developing the event and aligning the concept holistically to the local beverage industry. We will now use the rest of the year to work on taking the next step forward in 2020. The next Beviale Moscow will take place in spring 2020. The exact dates will be announced as soon as possible.
