TECNOPOOL, THE BEST CHOICE

T

he story of Tecnopool is one born out from a big idea: design, manufacture and installation of machinery for the treatment and processing of food products. A story that began in 1980 with the patenting of Anaconda: the first conveyor belt conceived by the company’s founder, Leopoldo Lago. A winning and above all versatile product, suitable for all manufacturing processes where food products need to be thermally treated. It was the beginning of a success story that has never stopped, as the results achieved in the last 30 years have been testifying: growth of sales, an increasingly widespread presence on foreign markets, and an ongoing evolution of the products. The story of Tecnopool began in Padua, but today that story has crossed domestic boundaries to be told all over the world. From deep-freezing to cooling, from pasteurizing to proofing, from product handling all the way to baking and frying, the term flexibility goes hand in hand with all Tecnopool solutions. Before developing a plant, Tecnopool thinks of those who will use it, because flexibility for it is not only a

mental factor, it’s above all a work approach. This is precisely the purpose of its design office: it helps to establish an exclusive relationship with the customers, based on straightforwardness, clarity and competence. A relationship built on the meeting and exchanging of ideas that starts early in the planning phase and ends with the construction of the system. This is how Tecnopool develops plants that are truly customized for each customer and for every type of space, plants that guarantee the maximum in terms of productivity and the minimum in terms of maintenance. The versatility of Tecnopool plants is proven by the sectors in which it is applied: it’s no coincidence that its technology is often behind the processing of a food product. Freezing The know-how Tecnopool has acquired allows it to guarantee a method that is absolutely avant-garde for the treatment of packaged or bulk food products, which are conveyed on belt and deep-frozen in cabinets that have insulated walls with variable thickness.

Cooling A system designed for two types of cooling: Ambient and with forced air in room. It is precisely this flexibility that makes it suitable for any manufacturing line and any kind of packaged or bulk food product. Proofing Such a delicate process deserves all attention. This is why Tecnopool has always developed plants that are perfectly calibrated that do not alter the properties of the food products and which therefore respect both the end product and the consumer. Pasteurizing To make the treated products reach the right temperature within the required time, it is essential to carefully cover every detail: it is no coincidence Tecnopool designs complex plants that use insulated rooms to treat the food products in accordance with parameters that are constantly monitored. Diathermic Oil Spiral Oven Tecnopool, faithful to its philosophy of simplifying production lines for mechanical and economic reasons, has completed its range of plants with a spiral cooking system which, thanks

to its configuration, allows for space saving and a smooth production process. In this way, it is possible to avoid the use of row gear up/gear down systems, which are very common in the pan lines used in tunnel ovens. This is not something new; however, this spiral configuration makes it possible to make the best of the heating system designed by Tecnopool for this oven. The absence of forced ventilation and the favourable balance of air/product volume in the cell, compared to a tunnel oven, makes it possible to work with room temperatures between 10° and 15°C lower than those used by tunnel ovens (cooking times being equal). In special cases, according to Tecnopool’s experience, these differences can reach 30°C. Anyway, also in some specific cases in which it is necessary, forced ventilation is also installed in order to increase the convective effect. The technical decision leading Tecnopool to choose a radiator system, together with the special configuration afforded by the spiral, comes from the results obtained after years of trials with all types of products and in very different working conditions, which

show a higher thermal performance, thus improving the results compared with other systems. The thermal fluid that runs through the tubes is diathermic oil, a system that has been chosen on account of its high thermal performance and its very low risk. It must be taken into consideration that the performance of a diathermic-oil boiler ranges between 87% and 91%, compared to 60% of an air-heating system or 30% of a direct-flame heating system. Tecnopool spiral oven makes it possible to save space, simplify the flow of the production line and save energy.

- Increase the rate of response and adjustment of the temperature; - Keep the frying oil as static as possible. Fume extraction hood with fat separation filters, high-efficiency turbine and glazed perimeter fence: - To facilitate the extraction of fumes and steam, prevent any condensation dripping back into the frying oil causing contamination; - To permit the visual inspection of the production; - To separate and condense the oil in suspension present in the fumes, to avoid odour.

Thermal Oil Fryer True to its philosophy of constant evolution and growth, Tecnopool increases its product range with another processing machine that allows it to complete new production lines that meet customer requirements in the areas of meat, fish, bread and sweets, snacks, peanuts and even pet food: Tecnopool fryer.

Frying pan completely removable: - For easy and fast cleaning during maintenance work of the machine; - To permit the elimination of scrap as solids; - To use the frying pan as a decantation filter of the oil.

Why choosing a Tecnopool fryer? Thermal oil exchanger submerged in the frying pan to: - Reduce to a minimum the difference in temperature between the heat source and the required frying temperature of the oil;

www.tecnopool.it

In short, the best choice for Tecnopool’s customers.

TEA TIME, SWEETS TIME Bosch and Essen Production join forces to offer a new treat in Russian confectionery market

W

hile the samovar1 is no longer a must in every Russian home, the tradition of tea-drinking is very much alive in the country. It goes back to long winter evenings when family and friends spent hours upon hours drinking tea over a cozy chat. Tea was usually consumed with something sweet which contributed to the development of a whole new class of snacks “to go with tea”: jams, pancakes, cookies and chocolate. Because Russian people usually drink tea after every meal, the consumption of sweets is deeply rooted in Russian culture. To capitalize on this tradition, Essen Production AG, a Russian food manufacturer famous for its Makheev mayonnaise brand, decided to enter the confectionery market.

New plant, new product, new line Today, Essen Production offers more than 100 products under the Makheev brand, including ketchup, sauces, jams, spices, snacks and mayonnaise. In 2011, after ten successful years in the market, the company acquired an old meat processing factory in Elabuga, the Republic of Tatarstan, which is a region of the Russian Federation, and converted it into a cutting-edge confectionery production facility. The company’s first confectionery products include a range of wafer sweets: “Arami”, “Moya lubimaya Jozy” (translated as “my beloved Jozy”) and “Vafelnaya Konfetka” (translated as “wafer sweets”). “Arami” is a glazed wafer treat with whole hazelnuts, “Moya lubimaya Jozy” is a semi-glazed wafer with whole hazelnuts, whereas “Vafelnaya Konfetka” is a bar consisting of three

wafers. In December 2012, Essen Production’s first confectionery product under working title “Konfetka” (translated as sweets) began its maiden voyage to the tea tables of Russian sweets lovers. “The new treat has instantly found its fans,” said Oleg Sukhorukov, deputy general director confectionery, Essen Production. “While delicate taste is the key factor in growing popularity of “Arami”, “Moya lubimaya Jozy” and “Vafelnaya Konfetka”, to draw consumer attention at the store shelf, the product needed attractive packaging.” When looking for a suitable packaging line, Essen Production sought out a solution that would offer the flexibility to package a variety of wafer products and address ever changing consumer preferences. After evaluating several packaging suppliers, Essen Production chose the solution from Bosch Packaging Technology consisting of the Lane Distribution System (LDS), five inline feeders (Pack Feeder 4) and five flow wrappers Pack 401. The Pack 401 ma-

chines are executed in a 4+1 configuration, which allows for undisrupted operations since one of the five lines is always on standby mode and can be used as a backup when another wrapper needs to be offline for maintenance, cleaning or any other issue. Seamless line To ensure that small wafers are packaged without bottlenecks and downtime, Bosch introduced its LDS (Lane Distribution System). The oscillating

diagonal positioned side guides streamline the products into four equal rows, one wafer behind another, in perfect order to avoid jams and other related machine stoppages. The wafer rows are then diverted to the modular product infeed system and transferred to the Pack 401 horizontal flow wrapper. Bosch’s LDS was specifically developed for small products and accommodates random product arrival at high production rates. Able to process up to 2,600 wafers per minute, the line achieves the highest possible efficiency by ensuring that products are automatically transported from one line part to another in the event of a breakdown. In addition, different modules, such as buffering and product inspection, across the entire packaging line ensure that the quality of the delicate wafers is maintained throughout the packaging process. Waste and damage levels are therefore kept to the absolute minimum. “Wafer products are fragile and unstable, making them a very demanding application to handle and package,” said Kasper Rentenaar, area sales manager, Bosch Packaging Technology. “We offered Essen Production a solution to overcome these challenges and ensure the highest possible quality.” Wafers in all varieties Because Russian consumers enjoy variety and choice when it comes to sweets, Essen Production developed several versions of its confectionery treats. Today, the company offers wafers with or without nuts, with or without decoration, and with creamy, chocolate or milky glazing. “Arami” and “Moya lubimaya Jozy” are produced in a single pyramid-shaped wafer only 2.5 centimeters wide, whereas “Vafelnaya Konfetka” is a bar consisting of three crispy wafer pyramids. To ensure all of these product variations could be handled efficiently, Bosch designed a streamlined packaging line, which seamlessly integrates the LDS, infeed system and Pack 401 horizontal flow wrapper. The line’s compact footprint allows Es-

sen Production to make optimal use of its available production space. In addition, the horizontal flow wrapper features easy to operate electronic controls and mechanical reproducible adjustments for quick changeovers and reduced downtime. High-speed for growing wafer craving To prepare itself for rapid increases in production volumes, Essen Production also required its packaging solution to have the ability to adapt from semi- to full automation, and from medium- to high-speed wrapping. The Pack Feeder 4 is capable of belt speeds up to 120 meters per minute, whereas the Pack 401 flow wrapper packages around 700 wafers per minute. To further maximize uptime, the Pack 401 features an automatic film splicer with a sensor that allows changeovers to a new film reel without stopping the machine. This feature not only reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the system for Essen Production, but also allows the company to package its new treats more efficiently and be prepared for growing market demand. “Bosch’s solution provides us with the option of quick upscale as wafer treats gain popularity,” said Sukhorukov. “This positions us for our anticipated growth over the next few years.” The future is sweet First distributed through the companyowned supermarket chain, “Arami”,

Konfetka” are rapidly gaining market share. Essen Production is looking to expand its confectionery facility and product offerings. Partnering with Bosch Packaging Technology, a complete solution provider with experience in packaging delicate wafer products, has allowed the Russian manufacturer to successfully enter the confectionery sector and respond to the ever-growing craving for sweets in Russia. “With Bosch we have found a reliable partner who provides support during every stage of the new product development process; from development, to consultation, to integration and factory acceptance testing,” said Sukhorukov. “We look forward to continuing our work together as we further grow in the Russian confectionery market.” About Bosch Packaging Technology Based in Waiblingen near Stuttgart, Germany, and employing 5,000 associates, the Bosch Packaging Technology division is one of the leading suppliers of process and packaging technology. At over 30 locations in more than 15 countries worldwide, a highly-qualified workforce develops and produces complete solutions for the pharmaceuticals, food, and confectionery industries. BOSS, AN UNCOMPROMISING OVEN

Real Forni’s new rotary oven Boss combines innovation and researches with the yearly experience and tradition

F

or more than 50 years Real Forni has been working in the development of ovens and equipment for the baking sector supporting the professionals from all over the world in this important food sector. The new rotary oven Boss combines innovation and researches with the yearly experience and tradition of the company thus making Boss the reference model of its category.

installed kcal/h! This is possible thanks to a system of baking endowed with two powerful fans and an heat exchanger with triple turn of fumes and to a system of insulation consisting in three layers of rock wool compressed panels. As

for the consumption, this system is extremely virtuous and with the addition of reduced overall dimensions it is possible to position the oven side by side on its three sides. These features give you the possibility to save a huge quantity of space

Maximum efficiency, reduced overall dimensions and low consumption are the key features that allow the user to save energy and space, reduce the cost of maintenance and improve the result on the baked product. A good ventilated baking for a rotary oven consists in the correct distribution of the heat and in the ability to bake the product with a gentle and abundant flow of air: this is the only way to equal the baking of a static oven. Another ultimate point is the ability of the oven to produce a great quantity of steam in a very short time and to regenerate it for the following baking. Thanks to the steamer positioned in the middle of the air flow, the oven Boss guarantees quickness and power to obtain crumbly products with a crisp crust. In the planning stage we have worked hard on the consumption and the results are real, indeed the oven Boss 60.80 heats up very quickly and it needs only 50.000

CLOETTA SEES PRODUCTION INCREASE WITH ISHIDA WEIGHER

T

he Ishida CCW-RS-216B2D was installed as part of Cloetta’s transfer of the production of Finland’s most famous confectionery brand Sisu from its Finnish factory to the San Pietro in Casale plant. The weigher has replaced two machines in the previous operation, achieving speeds of up to 150 packs per minute on 32g and 70g cartons. Accuracy on the 70g pack is to within 0.3g of target. The 16 head Ishida model is operating in twin mode, with two sets of eight heads weighing the product simultaneously, which effectively doubles output from a single weigher. A set of booster hoppers situated beneath the weigh hoppers increases the number of weighments from which the combination closest to target weight is selected, thereby further increasing accuracy. A special rotary distribution system underneath the weigher then fills the cartons. The automatic packing line is able to handle both single and double packs, which are film sealed, with the single packs placed into retail ready cartons and the double packs into boxes. Sisu is an iconic brand so it was important that the new production facility in Italy was able to meet the high standards expected of the product. “Our facility was recognised as delivering the highest production quality and it was vital that we could match this quality in our packing operation,” explains Plant Manager, Marco Bagato.

“Cloetta has Ishida weighers installed in its plants throughout Europe so we were well aware of the machines’ capabilities. It was therefore a natural decision to opt for the Ishida weigher as it represented the ideal balance of quality, performance and price. Indeed, we know it has the capacity to operate at even greater speeds of up to 180 packs per minute, but at present we are restricted by the speed of the cartoner.” The Ishida weigher, installed by Ishida’s Italian agent Itech Italia, is handling a variety of Sisu products, including sugar-free (Leijona) and sugar coated varieties. Changeovers can be carried out quickly via the weigher’s easyto-use remote control unit (RCU).

Cleaning of the weigher, which takes place every time production changes from sugar-coated to nonsugar-coated varieties, is also simple with no need for the dismantling of parts. The San Pietro in Casale plant is committed to reducing waste throughout all areas of its operations and the Ishida’s excellent accuracy, which has minimised giveaway, and simplicity of cleaning are a vital part of this. “We needed a weigher that could combine ease of use with maximum reliability and efficiency,” concludes Mr Bagato. “The Ishida has delivered on all counts.” www.ishidaeurope.com

cesses. With this solution Habasit can now supply all belting applications in a biscuit processing factory from the beginning, means preparation, mixing and moulding of dough, until the packaging at the end of the line. This ensures reliable high quality belting products all from the same source. Habasit Rotary Molder belts are made in a unique mechanical weaving process, a technology which has been developed and constantly upgraded over decades. This guarantees durable, high performance, truly endless woven belts to shape biscuits in best quality! Each single Habasit Rotary Molder belt is tailor made for the specific machine, dough composition and biscuit type of the customer. This addition to the Habasit belt portfolio is the fruit of the latest acquisition: Schermer Transportbanden B.V. in the Netherlands - a company renowned for its quality in rotary molder and other seamless belt applications. Habasit belting innovations Plastic modular spiral belt solutions Habasit offers a broad range of plastic modular belts suitable for installation on spiral proofing, cooling or freezing systems. Many spiral systems still work with metal belts, which increase the overall weight and energy consumption of the machine. Furthermore, metal belts need frequent lubrication, a major risk in open food processes. Habasit plastic modular spiral belts achieve remarkable waste reductions thanks to their improved release properties. They also achieve considerable energy savings compared with the use of heavy metal belts. Faster installation, repairs and cleaning are additional advantages of plastic modular spiral belts. Habasit has established a specialized team of plastic modular spiral belt experts and installation engineers that can support customers to assess, upgrade and improve the performance of spiral systems.

L

ove for the perfect form Over 25 years of passion for the perfect form have allowed Errepan to position itself on the Italian podium of metal pan and equipment manufacturers for the confectionery and bread-making industries. Technological evolution, innovation and determina-tion have done the rest to satisfy an increasingly diversified and heterogeneous demand, borne of the international commercial relationships that the company has developed over the years.

Certified quality Errepan has been ISO 9001 certified since 1998 for its system of quality, guaranteeing respect for operatio-

nal procedures throughout the entire production process. Complementing the company’s certified quality is the quality of its daily interactions with clients, with a particular focus on meeting their needs. International trade shows In addition to Italian events, Errepan has long had a presence in the biggest international trade shows to reach local markets and give potential clients the chance to “see with their own eyes” the reality that excellence in the field currently represents. The products With a broad, comprehensive line of products, Errepan is able to satisfy

every need of the confectionery and bread-making industry. The range of available forms is constantly expanding, motivated by (among other things) the push from clients, which the marketing department (with inimitable support from the technical office) then takes as its own and transforms into perpetually new products and solutions. Pans for croissants, plum cakes, mufins, tarts, the most original soft cakes, but also for panbauletto, pan carré, and sandwich bread. The tray with self-carrying paper cup holders is an interesting and innovative solution. It can be used as a pan on the production line or as a support in the product prototyping phase, with a consequent reduction in cost.

EUROSICMA: 50 YEARS OF EMOTIONS

W

ith 50 years of activity, celebrated last year, Eurosicma keeps on growing and developing advanced technologies for the confectionery and bakery industries. From the beginning, Eurosicma has been characterized by highly advanced technologies developed in the horizontal wrapping machines field, able to satisfy top standards of performance, granting the expected efficiency and the full productivity of the customers’ plants. From its first creation in the 60s to the latest one, each manufactured machine has made a step ahead in the relationship between the supplier and the customer with special emotions. This is the history of Eurosicma’s machines that have peculiar characteristics in the know how developed and in the right intuition behind the designing. Our last creation. Strong emotions. A 50 mt fully automated wrapping line with integrated Pick & Place unit In some peculiar stories, emotions start from the beginning of the project when the technical studies and the designing phase have the only target to get to the

point in the most efficient and elevated way. This installed line includes primary and secondary flow wrapping starting from the end of a noodles processing line. Noodle cakes are distributed carefully to the three wrapping lines thanks to dedicated row distributors and highperformance pressure less feeding and timing systems. The row distributor Model SMART, developed within Eurosicma group, is able to control and distribute orderly products coming in rows from the processing line, ensuring a dynamic and continuous feeding of the whole line. Each distribution station is in real time communication with the complete system and thanks to the technology employed able to grant a dynamic feeding and a gentle handling of the products. No gap between the distributed rows and alignment of the products are ensured. Such requirements are fundamental to enter the “in line” timing phase using the patented pressure less function of the Feeding & Timing system HSF8. This is a peculiar system for high-speed flow wrapping equipped with 8 independent servodriven belts able to avoid any friction and pression during the timing process. It is particularly suitable for thin prod-

ucts, enrobed chocolate bars, jellies, cup cakes, nougats, cereal bars and delicate products like noodle cakes that need a very gentle handling. Such sophisticated feeding system is equipped with auto-tensioning and auto-centering belts’ system and allows an easy and fast tool-free cleaning for plates, belts and transmission rollers. Such huge wrapping line includes also multipack wrapping. To link primary and secondary flow pack machines, Eurosicma developed the MPF -MultiPack Feeder-. It is a fully automated feeding system that can be combined with the flow wrapper EURO 88 for primary wrapping. Such system is able to orientate the flow packs, grouping them in the desired quantity and finally, by means of a 2 axis driven Pick & Place system, transfer the created portions directly to the secondary flow wrapper’s feeding chain. Emotions started from the beginning but kept on growing, reaching at the end of the supply the top level. During the SAT of the whole line by the customer’s factory, Eurosicma’s equipment was able to reach higher efficiency levels compared to the ones agreed and signed! Thanks to such effi-

ciency, the client is able to increase his profit margin keeping the same product pricing. Request of a powerful automatization. Emotions of challenge. When feelings seem to be strong from the beginning, at the end they become exciting. This is the case of a special request of one of the most relevant biscuits manufacturer, active since 1857, who has a very deep know how in the equipment technologies and decided to start a project with Eurosicma, as partner. This project was a reorganization of the whole factory management where higher levels of automatization started to be necessary. The aim was to transfer the hardest jobs - done by people - to automatic actions of dedicated machines, in order to let people work as supervisors and control managers, avoiding alienation. The study and the development of dedicated and fully customized feeders allow switching from manual feeding and operations to successful fully automated distribution and packaging processes. Out of the extrusion line for filled biscuits, Eurosicma dedicated feeding equipment transfers products to the portioning units that automatically create the exact portions, consequently downloaded into double flight-bar conveyors. The APVF Model – Automatic Volumetric Portion Feeder-, available

with different numbers of lanes depending on the volumes of production and the project’s characteristics to be satisfied. It is an efficient solution to handle both dry and sandwich biscuits; it is completely servo-motorized, driven and controlled by the wrapper and capable of reaching a speed of 25 cycles per minute. Thanks to the specific technology employed this slugs feeder is able to grant an extreme gentle handling of the products with an easy and fast change size. After the automatic portioning, the biscuits positioned on edge are transferred into double flight-bar conveyors to be finally delivered to the flow wrappers for biscuits on edge Model EURO 88 EDG. For this specific project Eurosicma developed a dedicated 90° Soft Transfer Unit able to manage two portions each cycle, in a dynamic way and following the movement of the wrapper chain, keeping the small biscuits in the proper position.

Pre-cut carton feeders and servomotorized gusseting are other peculiar features of the supplied wrapping line. Once the supply was fully commissioned, the customer agreed with Eurosicma to upgrade flow wrapping systems of the whole factory. Small details always make the difference. Sweety emotions. When advanced technologies are even and even improved, what you obtain is excellent performances. This is the case Eurosicma experienced with high-speed flow wrapping of pectin jellies. Pectin jellies, both sugar coated and not, can be sticky and very soft products, becoming consequently easily deformable. In addition to the products intrinsic and physical features, the multinational customer required never achieved out-puts in order to be able to satisfy the huge volumes requested by specific markets. Thanks to Eurosicma’s capabilities and historical background, unbelievable emotions has been achieved. Significant improvements in the feeding system and products handling are the key factors in such supply, giving the customers sweets emotions and production speeds over its expectations. After the first prototypes, more than 20 units has been supplied to the same customer on exclusivity basis. This project marks for that company an unbelievable and competitive advantage, being the unique player of this market using such technology. www.eurosicma.it 23

Crown works with and for customers throughout the entire creative process, from initial product conception to the rolling out of the finished pack on their production lines. All of the products made by CROWN Aerosol and Specialty Packaging Europe are produced in Europe, not only providing a reliable supply chain for packaging, but also helping to accelerate time to market. Veronique Curulla, European Marketing Director, CROWN Aerosols and Specialty Packaging Europe, says: “All brands are unique so, in order to convey their individual identities, they need original, oneof-a-kind packaging that grab shoppers’ attention and convey the quality of the product within, before consumers have had a chance to taste it. With Crown’s expertise and technology, we can provide customers with a fully-customized product to meet their quality standards and support them in optimizing production line efficiency, giving them peace of mind when introducing a new packaging format.”

The Benefits of Metal Crown’s increasingly lightweight metal packaging complies with all relevant food safety standards and legislation. With excellent barrier properties, metal packaging has an unbeatable shelf life and offers exceptional protection of the product within from both air and sunlight, preserving its taste and freshness for considerably longer than alternative materials. Crown’s packaging is 100 percent recyclable and, as metal recycles

forever with no degradation, it can be used to produce new packaging over and over without the need for virgin raw materials, making it a sustainable and cost-effective format, as well as one that supports brands’ premium quality goals. In fact, the recycling rate is key – nearly 75% of all metal packaging is recycled today and the infrastructure is in place in Europe to recycle each and every can produced. www.crowncork.com

CUTTING-EDGE PACKAGING DESIGN AND SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS SAFEGUARD TOP QUALITY FOR CONFECTIONERY BRANDS

H

ow important are the confectionery, chocolate, snacks and sweet bakery sectors to your business? In a word: extremely. Metal packaging is really important for the chocolate and confectionery markets, especially when it comes to gifts, or even seasonal celebrations sharing. The unique qualities of metal provide an added level of luxury that other packaging simply cannot achieve. That is why as a company, we are committed

to coming up with new ways to package these types of goods, including shaping, inks and finishes, decorative techniques - such as embossing to highlight logos or a specific mark - or inks that give a different aspect and a different touch to help focus and retain consumers’ attention. How have things developed/ changed within the past five years? Metal packaging, in particular has

come a long way over the past five years, and today it is more important than ever. It has gone way beyond the fundamental values of protecting the product inside; it is a representation of the brand and differentiates it on store shelves. At the same time, consumers now want more value for money. Unique, beautifully decorated, shaped metal containers can be reused to accommodate day to day needs such as storing pencils, sewing kits or even more confectionery.

These tins are now becoming keepsakes in their own right, which provides added value. How do you see things changing/developing over the next five years? As a business we’ve noticed a number of trends developing recently, which we believe will start to play even more of a key role in the years to come. Lightweighting, which reduces the amount of metal required to make a package, and sustainability are becoming increasingly more important – especially in the customer purchasing decision process. Steel packaging weighs 40% less than it did 40 years ago, and we are always looking for new ways to build upon that. But consumers also want responsible packaging, and, as metal is 100% recyclable, it can be infinitely recycled without losing its proprieties, making it a permanent reusable resource. Of course, new designs, shapes and decorating techniques are an ongoing development and as with any market, we need to keep our ideas new and interesting to engage consumers. We believe that metal packaging will continue to be a valuable asset in the industry, providing a premium look and feel to products, along with offering a level of protection that other types of packaging cannot. What, in your opinion, has been the biggest breakthrough in the sector over recent years? For us it has been the automation of producing our seated end packaging as opposed to the manual method used in the past. This process allows us to reduce production costs and increase throughput efficiency. At the Answers provided by:

same time, the range of decorative techniques available is now far more advanced. Surface finishes offer a remarkable new level of shelf appeal. Special finishes such as gloss or matt applications can add movement to a package, while the crackle finish conveys an aged and authentic look. Pearlescent finishes provide depth and sophistication to the packaging. It is known that consumers are more likely to buy a product after picking it up off from the retail shelf; therefore the feel of a package is an important physical interaction with a product. To this end, our range of coatings and finishes that blend inks and varnish add a tactile element to metal packaging. A “soft touch” finish, for example, renders a smooth and silky feel that is particular inviting. How does the sector differ within the most important world markets? The needs of brands in different countries will of course vary, depending on specific market nuances and preferences. That is why it is crucial that customers choose the right packaging partner - one that is established and understands the market and their needs in order to achieve the high standards required to make their product is a success. With operations in 40 countries, Crown is uniquely positioned to support brands around the world – both in established markets and the growing economies of Asia, Eastern Europe, South America and the Middle East and North Africa. Whether improving existing technology or pioneering a new concept, we are committed to working in partnership with our customers to drive their businesses locally and globally.

At Rademaker they have managed to transform the traditions of the past into robust, state-of-the-art industrial bakery production lines. Today, the ever changing need for new types of bread reflects even faster changing consumer attitudes. Rademaker is familiar with types of bread from all over the world. The Dutch based company have incorporated all of this know-how into their flexible Crusto bread line that will allow users to anticipate the future requirements of their customers. It is designed to produce a wide range of breads from soft dough, strongly hydrated dough, pre-fermented dough, bio dough and firm dough. The unique modular design of the production line allows for fast product changeovers and for expansion with customized additions with which the users can easily adapt their product range. Designed to meet the highest hygie-

nic and safety standards, the Rademaker Crusto bread line will yield maximal results in terms of product quality and return on investment, with a focus on ingredient and waste reduction. Capacities range from 500 kg 9.000 kg per hour, consistently produced hour by hour, day by day, and year by year. Why sheeting technology? Rademaker are specialists in sheeting technology. They have chosen the sheeting technology above the traditional system because sheeting provides some important benefits. Sheeting makes it possible to handle a great variety of dough types, from ‘green’ to pre-fermented dough, all at high capacities. By using stress-free dough sheeters and laminating technology, you can achieve basically any dough and bread structure desired. The Rademaker Crusto breadline concept allows to combine traditional bread types with artisan bread types, all produced on one sheeting system.

Wide product assortment at significant capacities The Crusto bread line is developed to produce a wide assortment of breads for mid-sized to industrial bakeries. Whatever bread product the user need, the Crusto bread line can make it. The line consists of a number of innovative and versatile modules on wheels that can easily be positioned in any required line order. This flexibility is key when it comes to configuring the desired application and managing production efficiency. When industrial bakeries choose for the Crusto bread line, Rademaker will provide them with the best solution for their situation, even if this means developing a customer-specific module. Unlimited variety for the best quality Versatility is key in the Rademaker Crusto bread line. Thanks to the modular set-up, this flexible production line allows it’s users to produce a wide range of breads by simply exchanging one or more modules.

A good recipe is the very basis of the bread quality. As it is Rademaker’s quest to produce a wide variety of high quality breads, the Crusto bread line is capable of handling a large variety of recipes, including those for breads with a high water % (strongly hydrated) or low salt content, with bio ingredients, or gluten free, prefermented, levain, mother dough, biga and sponge dough. All these recipes result in a very wide range of bread products. If for example it’s users want to produce tin breads Rademaker focus on achieving a fine and consistent crumb structure, as with the high-water absorption artisan breads the focus is on obtaining a light, authentic and open bread structure. Whatever bread product industrial bakeries desire to produce, dough processing holds no secrets to Rademaker. While the Crusto bread line is developed to produce an extensive and international assortment of breads, Rademaker can take the extra step and apply one of the major strengths of the company, namely developing customized modules tailored to specific needs.

Continuous improvement and innovation When industrial bakeries choose Rademaker as their partner in bread lines, they choose for the very best. The company listen to customers, keep close track of market developments and treasure the feedback of their service engineers. This enables the Rademaker Research & Development department to develop innovations customers can face the future with. The robust and durable production lines are built from first-class materials by qualified professionals. Special components are sourced from selected third party suppliers with a proven track record. Rademaker equipment meets international food processing standards and is designed for wet cleaning. Hygiene and safety are top priorities. The quality that results from all of this and of which Rademaker is so proud, reflected in every single component of every production line build and in every service that is provided. A continuous improvement program ensures that this high quality is maintained at all times.

FARHAT LATEST TECHNOLOGIES IN PITA AND FLATBREAD MACHINES

T

he continuous improvement of Farhat Bakery Equipment machines always keeps the company a step ahead of all the competitors. As a leader in the market, Farhat provide complete lines for pita and flatbread and from Mixing to Packaging. Two type of processes are offered: the traditional pita line and the continuous sheeting line. The traditional lines are based on divider-flattener concept where generally the almost 90% round shape is produced. The traditional line can be compact, standard or a customized line. These lines have several add on features like: • Bypass to skip or reduce the final proofing stage.

• Dough Docker to create small vents in dough in order to prevent it from blistering and rising in large. • Dough Selector to remove the defective pieces of dough before entering the oven. • Special cutters to cut the main pieces into several special pieces. These add on options are installed to increase productivity, reduce defect, change product diameter… Recently the stacker has become a main need for the line as it has proven its profitability and reliability. The Stacker counts the bread pieces, stacks them and prepares the stacks for bagging saving the baker’s time and money. The machine can be a single row or multiple rows and used for stacking all types of pita and flatbread. Then, Farhat Bakery Equipment continuous sheeting lines are specially customized production lines where different sizes and shapes of breads can be made: Samoun Iraqi bread, Baladi Egyptian bread, pocket pitta bread, mini pitta bread, pitta chips, tortilla, Naan bread, Lavash bread, Sambosa rolls, and tandoori bread, by simply changing the rotary cutters. This type of line is specially designed to produce a 100% product shape while the “hand-made” quality is mostly preserved. Each line is customized to gently handle

the dough and to provide excellent bread shape with the best optimal usage of the available space. The line capacity depends on several factors mainly: the dough type, the final product type, the final thickness and the production environmental conditions. The continuous sheeting lines have been developed, manufactured, and continuously improved to keep up and evenly trying to exceed the increasingly demanding requirements of the changing market. Moreover, for Bread baking, Farhat has been manufacturing and installing several types of ovens: Tunnel oven - main burner, Combined Tunnel oven - main burner with ribbon pipes from bottom, Infrared tunnel oven, Ribbon pipes tunnel oven, Wheel oven with ribbon pipes … In addition, Farhat has been manufacturing pita chips slicers, burgers and bun slicers, breadsticks grissini

machines, mini dividers, manakish and pizza traditional ovens… and several other machines. Because the client satisfaction is Farhat’s main concern, the client support, the client guidance and Farhat expertise and knowhow are provided through the whole process from preliminary layout till production, commissioning, and training. All Farhat lines, use the state of the art control system with HMI, require a short cleaning and maintenance time, and finally meet the hygiene bakery standards along with CE standards, UL standards, and TSSA standards. Finally, to achieve total customer satisfaction, Farhat will do the maximum to understand the customers’ requirements and meet those requirements at all times. While customer satisfaction is one of the main aspects of Farhat management system, their commitment extends beyond that, as they also strive to do everything right the first time and do their best for continuous improvement.

EXTRUSION AS AN INNOVATION DRIVER BRABENDER® EXTRUDERS FOR THE FOOD LAB

E

xtruder products rank among the pioneering opportunities for product innovation in the food sector with promising opportunities on the market. This is why practically relevant equipping with extrusion equipment is a fixed constituent of the “toolbox” that is required for product developers in the food industry. New developments in snack products, breakfast cereals, flat breads, sweets, pet food and other special products can be prepared on a laboratory scale using this modern key technology. Brabender® provides suitable instruments for experimental trials of potential product lines with extrudates in

a wide range of shapes, colours and flavours. They are compact and can be put to versatile use in innovative food laboratories. They make it possible for modern foods to be developed under realistic process conditions. This means that ongoing production is not impacted, which saves money but is still consistently quality oriented. Laboratory extruder as sensible alternative for practical applications There are few procedures with as much potential for completely redesigning a product matrix. In order to develop innovative food textures and structures, the parameters of pres-

sure, temperature, and shear can be varied during extrusion without changing the final product. Continuous operation in a closed system combines complex production steps into a constant, continuous production process. If product developers have to experiment on extruders during live operations in order to do this, this can lead easily to operational disruptions. This is why laboratory extruders are a sensible alternative for everyone involved in the development and testing of new processes and products - regardless of existing traditional processes, and with potential prospects for creating something completely new.

Six arguments speak in favour of practical product development with laboratory extruders rather than experimental interventions in the production process: • You get to know new processes, and are able to test textures and sensory characteristics before trials have to be conducted on a production scale. • You can vary your application ideas in a wide variety of ways: in terms of raw materials, composition, machine or product. • You require significantly less material to carry out your trials, and hardly any product waste occurs. • You don’t have to worry about impacting your current quality management system. • You can establish methods for measuring your quality from raw material to end product in advance, in order to be in a position to react to quality variations in a better way at a later date. • You can easily achieve a return on investment with an appropriate philosophy of innovation within your company. Triple extrusion expertise from Brabender® The corporate group has many years of global experience with extruders and the practical deployment thereof: Thanks to the transfer of technology between plastics processing, the pharmaceutical industry and the food sector, Brabender® can provide extrusion expertise in three essential fields of application. The use of measuring extruder systems in food laboratories provides reliable results for the fine tuning of optimal production conditions and to providing constantly high product quality. As is to be expected from Brabender®, the extruder technology that is provided is suitable for a wide variety of uses, especially in the field of grain products, and can be networked with other ‘classical’ quality measuring processes.

Single-screw and twin-screw extruders or the modular expansion make it possible to adapt the processing conditions to the many different of products and tasks in the best possible way, customised to suit your operations: • Quality control and analysis of raw materials • Product development and recipe optimisation • Testing of the extrusion properties of different materials • Research and optimisation of processing characteristics • Binding of active ingredients and aromatic substances to a carrier material, such as in snacks • Measurement of rheological properties of material combinations • Extrusion of degradable products • Product manufacturing on a laboratory scale At the same time, studies with laboratory extruders have a range of technical process advantages over other procedures such as the practically-oriented measurement of extrusion conditions with small sample volumes, rapid changes in trial conditions, and simple operation and cleaning. Three equipment lines that are specially oriented to food laboratory requirements are introduced here as examples of our extensive product range: Entry-level single-screw extruders The Brabender® KE 19/25 is an “entry level” model for measurement extrusion: a robust, autonomously operating single-screw extruder, that is ideal for laboratories and technical institutions. Based on a broad selection of screws and tools, this machine is the ideal solution for • Developing new materials and products, including viscosity measurement • Testing processing behaviour during recipe development and product monitoring in the incoming and outgoing goods areas • Quality control during production and throughout processes, with production of a company-specific qual-

The Brabender® KE 19/25 is a sturdy, directly driven stand-alone extruder for laboratory and pilot plant stations.

ity profile for the consistent manufacture of products that comply with specifications • Optimisation of production conditions, full machine capacity utilisation, and minimisation of waste A comprehensive range of die heads is also available that makes it possible for a wide range of product ideas to be developed and tested. The performance features of this compact device are rounded off by powerful and user-friendly software packages that work on any version of Windows, the storage of operating and evaluation parameters in a database, and the capability of exporting the data into the usual Office programs. As well as operating stand-alone, this machine can also be ooptionally integrated into local data networks in PCcontrolled mode. Twin-screw extruders for sophisticated applications Twin-screw extruders are the number one choice for sophisticated, complex applications. The Brabender® TSE product range is particularly attractive because of its wide range of applications and maximum flexibility. The screw and

cylinder construction kits that are available in different sizes are designed in such a way that all process stages (feeding, conveying, plasticising, dispersing, reacting, degassing) can be carried out in the best possible way. The combination of several work steps into one continuously operating extruder turns these twin-screw extruders into modern inline compounders. The additional equipment that is required such as measurement and control systems, dosing systems and downstream facilities are also available, making it possible to build up entire modular extrusion systems that are tailored exactly to individual user requirements. As well as the TSE 20/40 and the co-rotating TSE 25/16 - 48 twin-screw extruders that have proven themselves time and time again in practice, the new Mini-Compounder KETSE 12/36 is now available, a miniature-scale twin-screw extruder with engineering that originates from material development and process simulations in the plastics industry. The combination of the scale-down of

the production machine, the comprehensive adaptation capability to any processing task and the ease of operation of the system are the reason for its distinction as an outstanding laboratory measuring device. The processing unit in the Lab-Compounder KETSE 20/40 as well as in the Mini-Compounder KETSE 12/36 and the TSE 20/40 consists of a hinged horizontal cylinder. This allows individual preparation steps to be visually assessed, and easy screw removal and quick cylinder cleaning are also possible. Furthermore, various mechanical material tests can subsequently be conducted on the extrudate. In this respect, online diagrams provide a quick overview of measurement data and evaluation results, even while measurement is in progress. The test data is stored in a database and can be processed using the usual Office programs, and can then be integrated into your own reports. Brabender® and its modular device designs show a practicable way toward practical implementation of extrusion technology in the food in-

dustry - one step at a time: The laboratory professionals develop creative innovation expertise, and companies safeguard their future with affordable investments.

With the Lab-Compounder KETSE 20 /40, Brabender® offers a twin screw ex-truder as miniature scale with application to the food and animal feed industry for material research and process simulation.

realize a real process line based on the high technology of each device and on the flexibility of function. Firex think of the transformation of raw materials, such as fruit, to produce food ready-for-sale, a process that affects the small food industries, but also agricultural producers who can jump into the direct sales market. Firex is able, therefore, to follow you step by step, to find, among the different lines produced, the machinery most suitable for the needs of the food industries. In the specific case of the production of jams, for example, the company is able to offer equipment for all processing stages: from the equipment for the washing and the drying of the fruit to the multi-purpose machine for cutting and

vacuum cooking, until the pasteurizing machine for the jars. Example of small process line for the production of fruit jams or canned vegetables: 1 Wash the fruit with Vegetable washer. The tank compartmented allows you to wash different products at the same time, while the vortex of the water is controlled depending on the needs. Each phase is automatic and programmable. The basket, practical and light, allows easy extraction of clean product. 2 Drying with the centrifuge. Before cooking it eliminates the excess water with the centrifuge specification for fruits and vegetables, which facilitates the work

and saves time. The speed is adjustable depending on the product, while the basket is easily extractable. The steel structure and the base rubber for the stability and the absorption of vibration, make the centrifugal Firex a professional appliance. 3 Inserting the fruits washed still whole in the vacuum cooking machine “High-P”. It’s the new born at Firex that, thanks to its patented multipurpose mixer, can cut the whole fruit, mix it and mix all ingredients. High-P makes jam only with ingredients such fruit and sugar: with the vacuum cooking, in halved cooking times, maintaining color, fragrance and taste of fresh fruit. In 15 minutes you can realize up to 20 kg of jam. 4 With the pasteurizing machine Fixpan, the product into jars lasts longer. After packing proceed to pasteurization in water of jam jars with Fixpan. In four moves your product is ready for sale! Vacuum cooking is also fast and maintains maximum nutritional value of foods .The cooking technique under vacuum allows to transform the foods at lower temperatures than with the open lid open. For example, fruit boil already at 80 ° C avoiding so the usual oxidation of the product. In this way, the colors and the organoleptic qualities of foods are kept intact and the end result is great and quick. In fact the last born in Firex, High-P is a cooker capable of using the vacuum in static or dynamic form and so to produce 20 kg of jam in less than 15 minutes or 50 kg of meat sauce in 35 minutes , considerably reducing the processing times and keeping unchanged the organoleptic properties of foods. Here with tools Firex you can get high quality food, genuine, shortening the supply chain and making the 100% products of our territory.

ho are we Born in 1959, Staff Ice System is the focus in the market of cold equipment, whose production in 1984 was combined with the one of the gelato and pastry machines.

A wide range of products With 6 lines of products and 32 models, Staff Ice System is able to meet all the requests of the Artisan Gelato Parlour, confectionery and modern catering. Innovative Technology The constant investment in research and development, designing, search the most current design, with a look to the environment, it has always been the philosophy of Staff Ice System. Operational and food safety, as well as energy saving, are at the heart of each design. It is by chance that in Staff labs in

collaboration with Toshiba we use the Inverter Technology, and developed a special density control, that allows the operator to choose the best density, but most of all to work on the overrun, thereby regulating the agitator speed to obtain ice-creams and semifreddo (frozen desserts) with different overrun.

Quality without compromise Easy to use in its standard functions, each machine of Staff’s range is for the gelato maker, the pastry chef and the caterer a huge resource: the perfect integration between basic electronics and the Inverter enables you to obtain any kind of mix, as made by hand.

The lines • BTM - Batch extraction manual, time control. • BFE - Batch freezers with automatic extraction, time control. ELECTRONIC BISCUIT FEEDER SCHIB PACKAGING S.P.A.

SCHIB PACKAGING’s biscuit feeder is particularly suitable for bakery products to be packaged in stacks, such as biscuits and crackers. Fully servocontrolled, it grants total reliability and maximum flexibility, as well as an extremely high precision in product handling, even with fragile products. The number of lanes which the loader consists of can be customized depending upon the overall output of the processing line and the number of packaging machines involved. The synchronisation between the loader and the packaging machine is assured by electronic axis drive technology (motive power point upon request). Accurately designed in every particular, this loader sums up perfectly any output requirements and the need for protecting product integrity. A set of electronically controlled mechanical cams ensures the most gentle contact between the extraction devices and the products, even at the highest speeds. The quantity of biscuits or crackers per stack can be programmed by keying in the desired number directly on the Touch Screen.

CPS produces professional solutions for the automatic positioning of bags and MAP trays into cardboard boxes, trays and even plastic crates, pallet boxes, roll containers and systems for general crate handling as well. CPS Case Packing Systems designs and supplies the latest systems for automatic end-of-line packing of product-filled rigid, semi riged products and flexible bags.

CPS CASE PACKING SYSTEMS B.V.

This CPS Case Packing Systems SL 105 Side loader loads automatically pillow bags, block bottom, necktie bags and small boxes vertical into carton cases or display cartons. The bags will be transported laying flat into the cassette. In case of more then one row the in-feed conveyor will have a pivoting function to compose the rows. The bags are placed in the cassette which is lowering down one step. As soon as the required number of bags (which is set in the product-menu) is present the elevator cassette will be in bottom position for case loading. A motor driven pusher system will push the cassette load into the vertically placed carton behind. During carton change the bags will be accumulated on the in-feed conveyor. In case of a twin version of the SL 105 the 2nd elevator cassette will be filled with bags and the cycle will be repeated. A menu controlled case change unit ensures the supply of empty cases and the discharge of the filled cases.

ision, mission and philosophy of excellence In a country with food manufacturing potentials, food manufacturing has to be set as one of the pillars of technological and economical progress. PIGO set a goal to become an initiating force in technological and consequently economical progress in food processing industry, a leader in country and in the world in manufacturing of food processing machines from its program. Today, PIGO has established itself as a world-class leader in the design and manufacture of high technology freezing equipment and freeze dryers, as well as fruit and vegetable processing equipment, with an extensive experience in both freezing and fruit and vegetables processing. PIGO machines are the result of many years of experience, research and development. PIGO can proudly say that its machines achieve excellent operating characteristics and energy efficiency, while being user friendly, thus guaranteeing many advantages and privileges to the company’s buyers. Main products PIGO has specialized in building fluidised bed freezers, EASY Freeze, the most suitable for IQF freezing variety of fruits, vegetables and numerous sea,

meat and cheese products, redefining IQF technology with adaptable air flow. Our EASY Freeze technology is providing perfect shape of IQF product and no clumps - full controlled fluidisation method keeps the product constantly suspended above the belt in a cushion of air. The result is the immediate crust freezing and efficient core freezing of individual pieces, regardless of type, variety or condition of product. Freezing efficiency is maximized for each unique product, whether the product is heavy, light, soft, sticky or fragile, thanks to variable speed control of all fans and belts, allowing on-the-fly optimization of air flow conditions. Interior video monitoring allows for real-time supervising of operating conditions, allowing the complete control and adjustments of the entire process from outside, without necessity to enter into the freezer. EASY Freeze is considered as the freezer with the most superior sanitation, giving the possibility to freeze different products one after the other without risk of cross – contamination. EASY Freeze is energy saving and trouble free solution for all your freezing needs. Within the freezing equipment product line, PIGO also manufactures the innovative EASY Freeze SPYRO, the latest generation of spiral freezers giving ut-

most advantages to the users in terms of energy efficiency, hygienic conditions and advanced technological characteristics, such as: › Belts gear motors are positioned outside the insulated cabin (no lubrication inside the freezer) avoiding any risks of contaminations due to some oil leakages; › The unit doesn’t have any mezzanine floor and or intermediary platform, to avoid any dirtiness accumulation (presence of any mezzanine floor or intermediary platform are making more difficult the cleaning operations) – the absolutely highest hygienic standards; › Freezer design is made according to max. thermal load and max. surface occupied on the belt by the different products foreseen; › Low maintenance cost and low spare parts cost due to utilisation of high quality commercial components; › Low pressure fans to higher air speed. In order to obtain a quick freezing process EASY Freeze SPYRO is designed for high speed circulation (4 -10 m/ sec) of cold air in contact with the product, on the whole length of the spiral conveyor; › Very low weight loss, which is two times less than with vertical air flow › Hitting the incoming product with the

coldest air; the product is therefore immediately “crusted” and snow formation diminished. PIGO freezers are built in modular sizes and all components are made entirely of stainless steel, capable to provide perfectly frozen product even for delicate products like cooked rice, raspberries, etc. PIGO also designs, fabricates and assembles sophisticated pilot and production freeze dryers, EASY Freeze DRYER - LYOPHILIZER, product line which includes a broad range of standard and custom units. The freeze drying - dehydration technology allows to save delicate aromas while drying the frozen product under vacuum, producing premium quality product. The machine is made entirely in stainless steel (chamber, doors, hinges, shelf modules, trays etc) with shelf modules and vapour condenser contained inside the chamber. Viewing ports are provided in the doors,

allowing observation of both the vapour condenser and product trays during the drying cycle. Each unit is equipped with complete refrigeration plant of corresponding size, including also refrigeration condensing unit which is purposebuilt with capacity control to allow economical use of refrigerant. Besides EASY Freeze, EASY Freeze SPYRO, and EASY Freeze DRYER – LYOPHILIZER, one of the company’s main machines is automatic Pitting machine PG103 having at least 50-100% higher capacity than any other pitting machine on the market. Experience of all PIGO’s clients confirms work with 0,00% of remained stones when adequate quality and preparation of the fruit (clean, calibrated product with adequate ripeness) is provided. To get a better idea of what PIGO does, please visit the website www.pigo.it or just send an e-mail to info@pigo.it, they will be very glad to send their detailed offer, and

P.E. LABELLERS’ SUCCESS AT SIMEI AND BRAU BEVIALE

A

t the end of 2015 P.E. LABELLERS took part at SIMEI and Brau Beviale. During these shows the enterprise has exhibited different MODULAR models one of these was suitable to process glass or plastic bottles on which self-adhesive or cold glue labels are applied thanks to flexible rotation control of the plates fitted with a servomotor that also ensures the optical orientation of the containers. The general idea used to choose the models was the popularity of the model in the market sector target. The staff explained the project, set up in 2015 in collaboration with KHS, to anyone interested. The aim of this project is to launch on the market a unique solution for bottling soft drinks, beer and alcoholbased products. Thanks to this partnership, we have been able to achieve maximum flexibility of the Triblocco, with lower costs for labels and lower plastic consumption. The flexibility lies in the blowing process of the preform with the machines manufactured by KHS, which creates bottles with various designs (i.e. they can be shaped, have an irregular design or a traditional cylindrical shape with parallel walls). The bottles are then labelled with traditional roll-feed or shrink-wrap labels from a P.E. LABELLERS labelling machine. Our sales team had shown how the experience the company acquired helped it expand its portfolio in all market sectors, from wine to distillates, food and beverage up to personal care and home care. In fact, our staff explained the great achievement made thanks to Cognac Larsen, renowned for making the “Cognac of the Vikings”. Cognac Larsen has purchased its first labelling machine by P.E. LABELLERS: a MODULAR PLUS 540 labelling machine with 3 self-adhesive stations and plate rotation with electronic cam, designed for the installation of a fourth labelling station, mechanical bottom centring and optical fibre. Despite its compact size, the flexibility provided by its

modular structure and the servomotors with integrated electronics provide the client with the most extensive range of combinations in terms of label application: indeed, the labelling machine is equipped to process as much as 23 different bottle formats at a speed of 5,000 bph, which covers Larsen’s entire product range. This installation allowed P.E. LABELLERS to enter in Altia Group, a leading wine and spirits company in northern Europe and the Balkans. There was also the chance to discover what has been achieved in the wine sector, for example the solutions adopted by Kessler Sekt, a long-standing and the oldest sparkling wine company in Germany. This is now part of the Cavit group, with whom P.E. LABELLERS worked to provide the packaging of sparkling wine with the Charmat Method at a speed of 6000 BPH thanks to a MODULAR PLUS 770 with a run-up orienting system, therefore limited to just 2 photocells. The machine is also fitted with a system to apply front, back and large neck labels, combined with the ink marker. Finally, to ensure maximum accuracy when the step is carried out on the product, before the final distribution stage we also installed the tools required to inspect and check quality in terms of

how the labels are applied. After the international experiences of P.E. LABELLERS with top wine companies such as Laurent Perrier, Veuve Clicquot, Moet et Chandon, here is top client from the Italian wine industry confirming the positive trend of the country’s market: Cantine Riondo. in 2015 P.E. LABELLERS installed a unique solution in Italy based on the use of a labeller that can process 18,000 BPH and has 140 m/min adhesive units. These are fitted with the new dual-roll solution, the automatic joiner and double winder, BBULL fixed cameras at the infeed, a programmable carousel and universal clamps with no adjustments and positive socket to go inside and come out of the containers from the machine’s turret without a counter-star. Precisely the brand new AUTOMATIC JOINER technology featuring special management software and installed both on the machine delivered to Riondo and on the machine on display during the trade fair – as in other systems delivered to Diageo and clients working in the distillates’ industry in the US and Mexico – led the company to win the “New Technology” award as part of the “Innovation challenge - Lucio Mastroberardino” (Simei 2015) competition. The company’s experience with Chi-

arli further confirms the professional approach and quality of PE products. Chiarli chose P.E LABELLERS as its partner and introduced two PE labelling machines able to process 18,000 BPH along its two bottling lines. The client asked for machines able to maintain high productivity levels, though they also needed to be flexible, i.e. able to switch from the cold glue to the self-adhesive system. This was ensured also thanks to interchangeable equipment fitted on the machines. Moving away from the world of wine and moving towards that of oil, here again P.E. LABELLERS has strong long-lasting partnerships with multinational companies such as Cargill, Savola or Wilmaar just to name a few. You can ask our personnel for information about our ongoing partnership with the Farchioni family, who is consolidating its relationship with P.E. LABELLERS year after year and renewed its trust in the company. Indeed, on Farchioni olii S.p.A.’s premises there are 9 P.E. LABELLERS’ machines and thanks to its constantly new product offer and after-sales service, there are constant

confirmations. Moreover, this year, P.E. LABELLERS has acquired a new name, BARTEX, after ordering its tenth machine. BARTEX is a major manufacturer and distributor of an entire range of various types of wines and spirits in Poland. Founded in 1990, it has become one of the leading Polish companies in the food sector, with 8 branches throughout the country. BARTEX bottles can be found worldwide, in more than 30 countries, with their major brands: Vodka.pl (vodka), Tur vodka (vodka), Red Army (vodka), Edelkirsch (liqueur), Istra (Vermouth), Bacchus (Vermouth), Amadeus (sparkling wine) and Desire (apple cider). BARTEX stands out for having received the following acknowledgements: Global Standard for Food Safety (BRC), International Food Standard (IFS) and Quality Management System and HACCP System certificates. This situation is due to the continuous research and attention that P.E. LABELLERS do in order to meet any kind of need in labelling with machines that employ the following technologies:

• cold glue • self-adhesive • hot glue for pre-cut labels • hot glue for roll-fed labels • pre-adhesed roll-fed linerless labels with or without shrinkage • 100% modular • sleeve labels P.E. LABELLERS carefully follows maintenance requirements for its machines and establishes long-term maintenance contracts to ensure and limit fixed maintenance costs and wear components. This means it stands out on the market for its 100% transparent approach on these two key management aspects for its labelling machines. The reason for this support and warranty policy reflects what P.E. LABELLERS itself demands from its machine tool suppliers, such as laser cutting, CNC centres, lathes and milling cutters. Indeed, these components are used for about 80% of production of the components of the more than 400 labelling machines made in a year.

AND THE EMMI GOES TO… SONOCO Swiss dairy choses IML packaging for about 50 yoghurt varieties

S

wiss yoghurt is becoming a top seller in Asia and the Middle East, whether it is pineapple yoghurt in Asia or strawberry flavour in the United Arab Emirates. The Emmi Group headquartered in Lucerne, Switzerland relies on Sonoco’s in-mould labelling (IML) solutions to pack its about 50 different yoghurt varieties and flavours. These high-quality packages are produced using thin-walled injection techniques and replace the previous deep-drawn cups with self-adhesive labels.

Emmi is the largest milk processor in Switzerland with some 5,300 employees (adjusted for part-time working) and is one of Europe’s premium dairies. In its home market, the company focuses on the development, production and marketing of a full range of dairy and fresh products as well as the production, ageing and trade of primarily Swiss cheeses. Outside Switzerland, Emmi concentrates on brand concepts and specialities in European and North American markets, and increasingly on emerging markets outside of Europe. Emmi exports its products from Switzerland into more than 60 countries. Every year, Sonoco’s packaging plant located in Zwenkau, Germany delivers several million cups for Emmi Yoghurt to Ostermundigen, Switzerland. Emmi fills about 50 varieties of yoghurt into the 100-gram polypropylene cups. The Swiss dairy exports 9 out of 10 cups to other countries and the trend is increasing. Especially in Asia and the Middle East, the demand for Swiss yoghurt is on the rise. In these markets, detailed information on the products

is particularly important – a field in which Sonoco’s IML cups offer key advantages. The all-around designed packages increase the decoration area by 25 percent, offering plenty of space for product information. As with all fresh products, hygiene is also a major issue - one that begins with the package. The thin-walled injection process used by Sonoco ensures a high standard of hygiene. Prior to injection, the granular base material is melted at approximately 200 degrees Celsius, which is an ideal temperature for food packaging. The entire production at the Sonoco site near Leipzig is certified according to the BRC-IoP standard for food packaging and is subject to strict quality management. “Our comprehensive control plan convinced Emmi to contract Sonoco,” says Andreas Rothschink, Sales Director Plastic Packaging, Sonoco. “We utilize multilevel camera inspection technology to match the labels on the bottom with the ones on the banderole and to control positioning accuracy, spiral misalignment and if the sealing edge is fully injected.” Furthermore, highly pigmented sunlight protection labels preserve the product against strong UV-radiation prevailing in many Asian regions.

duction focuses on cups, cans and oval containers with volumes from 100 millilitres. Sonoco manufactures with highperformance equipment, using the latest tool and robotic technology. The IML process is a relatively new packaging technology and has the main advantage of combining manufacturing and decorating in a single operation. Another benefit is that labels applied during the injection process are usually made of the same plastic substance as packages, so there is no need to separate materials for recycling. Adhesives are unnecessary because both components are melted together during processing. In-mould labelling opens up a wide range of design possibilities for decorating packages, producing outstanding tactile and visual effects, and even highly realistic photographic images. Labels are available with a matt or glossy surface, and they provide additional product protection against UV rays and light. These types of labels can be printed using either offset or gravure printing.

Sonoco produces plastic packages at its Zwenkau plant near Leipzig, Germany as well as in Bradford/UK. Pro-

HOW TO ACHIEVE PACKAGING WITH PERSONALITY The designers Paco Adín (Supperstudio) and Santo Cabrera (Solo Advertising have come up with the recipe for achieving differentiated packaging.

“D

ifferent, surprising, motivating and, above all, something that brings a smile to buyers’ faces and makes them a little happier.” This is how the designer Paco Adín of the agency Supperstudio defines packaging with personality. Adín, who designs fun and multi-award-winning packaging, puts forward eight keys to attaining unique packaging: 1. Tell a story, seduce with simplicity and, if possible, use humour. 2. Less is more. If something doesn’t contribute, it just gets in the way. 3. Make it easy to buy. Use packaging to help your customer identify your product. 4. Make the consumer think a little. 5. Take risks; be audacious. Break the rules. 6. Differentiate, stand out. Having personality means doing things differently. It’s very hard to stand out by doing the same as everybody else. 7. Encourage consumer participation. Play games with them to make the customer think. 8. Think green and never let your brand become a grey one. For Adín, every project is a creative challenge: “I like to wring out my brain cells to come up with the best idea. What a coincidence! It’s sure to be the simplest one, but it’s never the first,” the Basque designer assures us. The perfect brief for unique packaging All designers agree that the first step to achieving differentiated packaging is to be in possession of a good brief.

Paco Adín It is the client who has to define precisely their requirements, the functions the packaging needs to perform and the brand values that need to be transmitted to have an impact on the consumer. Santi Cabrera, director of the agency Solo Advertising, defines six essential factors to include in a good brief. 1. Make it comprehensive and include as much useful information as possible for the agency. 2. Explain the company’s starting point and its values: what stage has it reached? What are its values and what has been done previously with regard to packaging? In this way an evolutionary line can be traced, defining the elements that need reinventing and those that need to be kept as part of its core essence. 3. Define the company’s target market. 4. Define the competition and the market leaders. It is important to include a study of the market that shows what methods the competition use, what innovations they

Santi Cabrera contribute and how they are perceived. It is essential to ascertain the trends within the sector. Only this way can the design be differentiated to surprise the end user. 5. Specify the objectives: what does the brand hope to achieve with the new packaging? Increase market share? Establish a reputation? 6. Other helpful information: the types of material to be used in the new design, the safety of the packaging, the size and density of the product, the manufacturing process, etc. Following the advice of Paco Adín and Santi Cabrera may not guarantee success, but it could be a good starting point for attaining packaging with personality, as explained by both designers during the last Hispack. 77

pack, but improves it. Smart Packetto offers wrinkle-free packs, film savings and increased print area for branding artwork, making packs more recognizable on the supermarket shelf.

In recent months, an installation was carried out of PackettoTM at a well known customer: Coca-Cola HBC Italia in Oricola, which is part of the Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company.

The improvement is possible thanks to the application of tiny dots of glue on the bottles, on to which to the film is applied. During the shrinking process, the film remains in position, so the pack is perfectly formed. Also thanks to the method of fixing the film, the amount of film used is reduced by up to 30% With Packetto™ solutions, customers have access to new tools that can upgrade the image of their brands, save money and raw materials, whilst respecting the environment. The PackettoTM SMART system has been installed on an existing Vega shrink- wrapping machine. With this revolutionary innovation in secondary packaging, the standard aesthetics of the bundles has been increased and uniform results obtained for all bundles produced. The fierce competition in the packaging industry led OCME to create this new packaging concept that maintains the same characteristics of a traditional shrinkwrapped

the OCME innovation in secondary packaging: “In the packaging sector, much has been done to reach out to the real needs of the consumer, but much remains to be done because all too often production and marketing needs prevail and these don’t always correspond to the expectations of the final consumer. The packaging should constantly change so that it correctly interprets the demands of consumers. For years, the manufacturers of secondary packaging machines have been looking for an alternative to traditional packaging, without finding it. www.ocme.com

in short

Your everYdaY work is tough enough

Understanding the market’s needs is the most important part of creating the perfect product.

T

he first step to achieve this is to recognize the threats and demands of the industry. Food processing workplace is a very specific one - constant necessity of quality control, contact with sharp and dangerous tools, food parts and liquids is the everyday struggle of the people working in food processing environment. And yet, the last but not least component - time. Every producer strives to combine these elements in order to achieve the high quality product manufactured in the shortest period of time possible. Everyone who struggles with this challenges sooner or later realizes that the final score depends on every component of the process - it is highly important to use only the tools which were created especially for this kind of jobs. That’s what OHAUS company takes for its first priority - creating the tools that will help their customers become the leaders in their class. When asked about the company’s main foundations in creating new products, Zbigniew Pobocha, General Manager, says:“For more than 100 years OHAUS is trying to make people’s job easier. The first question that we ask ourselves while creating a new product is, who is going to use them. Then we gather information about those people line of work. Creating the scale for Food Processing Industry is one of the most difficult tasks. We have to think about every possible situation that can threaten our scales’ operability. But in the end it’s really satisfying to create something that will make Customers work faster and easier - their everyday job is tough enough and they should not have to worry about damaging

their scale simply by spilling the liquid on it. I trust that after all the years we have finally succeeded - our Customers are highly satisfied with our new Valor 2000 and 4000 scales, created especially for food processing jobs.” OHAUS latest proposal for food industry jobs are Valor 2000 and 4000 Compact Bench Scales, certified and highly resistant. Looking at their features it is clearly visible that they are the perfect tool for the food processing. The designers of the scales have considered the need of Valor’s 2000 and 4000 resistance to the sharp objects, commonly used in the food processing activities - the scales are equipped with polycarbonate knife proof keypad. It prevents damage from knifes, repealing stains, moisture, corrosive fluids and food contaminants. The scales’ Flow Thru Design protects the scales from fluids and condensation that may form inside the scale from constant temperature changes

in typical food processing environments. The Valor 2000 and 4000 scales are NSF Certified and have OIML/EC Type Approval. All those combined features make the Valor Compact Scales safe, fast and highly durable. Designed especially to endure in the harsh food processing jobs, they are certainly the right tool for the toughest jobs. www.ohaus.com OHAUS manufactures an extensive line of high-precision electronic and mechanical balances and scales that meet the demands of virtually any weighing need. The company is a global leader in the laboratory, industrial, and education channels as well as a host of specialty markets, including the food preparation, pharmacy and jewelry industries. NEWS IN SHORT

IN SHORT

CREATING NEW STANDARDS IN ROTOGRAVURE CYLINDER MANUFACTURING

n 1956 Evangelos Ioannou started his working life in the rotogravure cylinder engraving industry. In 1970 he founded in Athens a small unit for the chemical etching of rotogravure cylinders. Working alone following the latest technological developments and constantly expanding his knowledge leads to continuous improvements in the quality and consistency of the company’s products. In 1990, this continuous improvement leads to growth and expansion and the company relocates to the Industrial area of Inofyta. The company is now second generation and under the direct management of the son of the founder, Mr. Yiannis Ioannou who applying the philosophy of continuous improvement and investment brings to Greece the first electronic engraving installation. Today, ICR-IOANNOU is the largest manufacturer of rotogravure cylinders in Greece and one of the largest suppliers in Europe, North and South America, the Middle East and North Africa. The company produces rotogravure cylinders for all sectors of the print market including, food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, FMCG, tobacco and the decorative sector. Carrying on the philosophy of the company founder ICR-IOANNOU constantly strives to answer questions ask by our customer by the constant use of R&D. This R&D has led to the development of the unique patented IMS Aluminum cylinder system. By utilizing aluminum and thermal spray technologies ICR-IOANNOU can offer the printer the following benefits: 1: Due to the speed that Aluminum cylinders can be produced the leadtimes to press can be greatly reduced. This gives the printer using Aluminum cylinders a competitive ad-

vantage over the competition; he can reduce the lead times to the end user from conception of design to print. 2: Due to the reduced logistics cost of the Lightweight Aluminum cylinders it is now possible for the printer to move cylinders to different print locations to meet demand rather than move printed product. 3: The reduced weight and better balance characteristics allow the printers to run the press at higher speeds, while maintaining the highest print quality. Because of the fact that the aluminum does not corrode the cylinder remains in this perfectly balanced state for its production life. 4: Due to the lightweight nature of the cylinders one press operator can manually place the cylinder in the press. This leads to greatly reduced lead times on the press and allows an increased number of cylinder changes during the printing shift. The cylinders comply with all European operator-lifting rules, reducing lost days of production due to handling injuries. 5: Due to the lightweight nature of the cylinders it can reduce the amount of wear on the print press bearing and moving parts, allowing increased periods of time between service interventions, reducing the maintenance cost on the machines while increasing productivity and efficiency of the press. 6: The lightweight nature of the cylinders allows greater flexibility in the warehousing of the cylinders. The warehouse footprint can be reduced due to the fact that we can stack the cylinders higher in a racking system. 7: Due to the environmentally friendly production methods, increased numbers of cylinders in shipments and more efficient printing we substantially reduce the carbon footprint of the cylinder and in-turn the printed product.

In the ICR-IOANNOU customer portfolio there are over 60,000 of these lightweight aluminum cylinders in the daily production workflow. In 2013 ICR-IOANNOU was awarded the much coveted European Rotogravure Association award for innovation. This year the company’s cylinder technology has been recognized by the Gravure Association of the Americas who awarded the company its Golden Cylinder award for innovation. his year Technoblock is celebrating 20 years of activity in the manufacturing of refrigeration units for applications in the field of controlled temperature. Starting with a small staff, the company can now count on a sales network located throughout the world. The Technoblock brand is known everywhere and stands for the variety and flexibility of its products. It offers many solutions that are already available in the catalog as well as solutions which are tailored to fully meeting customer’s requirements. Refrigeration is a process that occurs through the reduction of fluid and solid temperatures in general. Through this process it is possible to preserve goods temporarily which would otherwise be perishable in the short term. Refrigeration is vital in the food industry, and should only be done by experts in the field, since the foods, owing to their diversity, require specific treatment temperature and humidity according to their nature. Market demands require refrigeration systems that are both efficient and reliable. This has lead Technoblock to produce a wide range of high quality refrigerating products that help installers and technicians working in the field to offer their customers the most correct solution as Cold Solutions. The various options for plants are defined as customized since they meet the customer’s expectations by giving extra benefits in terms of yields and energy savings. Tecnoblock’s sales network is made

up of professionals. It can boast of a great deal of experience in the refrigeration industry and provides consultancies for projects dedicated to the different conservation needs of the different countries of the world. Every request is specifically studied by Technoblock’s R&D department in order to propose optimal solutions for the various applications and especially a speedy and efficient aftersales service. Technoblock products are assembled with high quality components by experienced workers. Particular attention is paid to the development of new techniques, as well as to the use of new materials, in accordance with European legislation. The installation and maintenance that usually entail important costs may be performed in a very simple and fast way. The products are designed with a “view” to saving energy and reducing consumption following an environment-friendly philosophy. “We have arrived at celebrating an important birthday”, says Claudio Lovato, Technoblock’s Commercial Director. “20 years mark a significant milestone for our company which has, in recent years, witnessed a radical change in the management as a result of the economic and financial crisis that hit the world economy. With the new management, the company has achieved a more structured and industrial organization, with welldefined objectives and has made itself more competitive in the marketplace. “The refrigeration market”,

continued Lovato, “has seen many companies in trouble as a result of market restrictions. Access to credit has become increasingly more difficult and together with other factors has turned a consumer crisis into a financial crisis. Small-and-medium sized enterprises such as Technoblock were the first ones to be effected. Technoblock was lucky in that it offered top-of-the-range products, which are positioned in price and quality in a market segment quite appealing for some customers.” A relaunch of the company recently took place mainly involving private capital investors who believed in the company and in its potential. “What is important”, Lovato affirms, “is that it has arrived to this point with a high technical potential, to have a company that with operational cost optimization has been able to invest in technology that allows the company to go forward”. These 20 years have gained the company a place in the world of manufacturers of industrial refrigerators. The strengthened and improved company has invested significantly in a relaunch of its products, strategically reviewing the range of products in order to better meet the demands of the market. The optimization and the review of the product range’s design are breathing new vitality into the brand that shall shortly, as the next leap in quality, undergo a makeover in order to better reflect the company’s relaunch.

These cutting-edge technologies benefit customers by improving their product performance, productivity, efficient use of energy and resources, and also by contributing to a more sustainable environment. A Swiss company with over 100 years of tradition, Oerlikon has a global footprint of over 15 500 employees at more than 200 locations in 36 countries and sales of CHF 3.2 billion in 2014. The company invested CHF 121 million in R&D in 2014 and has over 1 300 specialists developing innovative and customer-oriented products and services. Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum offers a broad range of advanced vacuum solutions for use in manufacturing and analytical processes, as well as for research purposes. The Segment’s core capabilities centre on the development of applicationand customer-specific systems for the creation of vacuums and extraction of processing gases. Fields of application are coating

P

lanning, predictability and process safety are concepts that are integral partsof an effective production environment. To achieve these objectives, a systematic approach is needed. Since 2013, Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum, a manufacturer of vacuum components and systems, uses a monitoring solution in order to support its customer to achieve these objectives. Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum

Measuring Data © Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum will participate at the ACHEMA in Frankfurt, 15.-19. June and at the THERMPROCESS / METEC in Dusseldorf, 16.-20. June. The modern vacuum solutions of the world’s leading manufacturer are used in a wide array of technological applications. In rough industrial processes such as steel degassing and also in other industrial high-tech methods such as the production of displays, vacuum pumps and systems are a core component of the manufacturing process and therefore require intelligent maintenance strategies. Based on the monitoring solution, Oerlikon Leybold provides its customers with customized service level agreements (SLA) and guarantees the availability of service experts and warrants fast response times. The condition-based, predictive maintenance strategy offers a maximum plant availability and mini-

mizes unplanned costly production downtimes. In the field of heat treatment processes, vibration monitoring systems for dry compressed pumps offer enormous potential. Increased wear on the pump is detected as well as influencing process conditions, such as deposit formation or particle entry. Maintenance measures can be initiated when the state of the pump actually requires intervention. Run times are maximized and maintenance staff can be deployed more efficiently. With regard to failure costs, preventive maintenance provides a high return on investment (ROI) and additionally supports a continuous improvement process for the entire maintenance management as well as for production. In most cases, companies may not even need any additional installation of an expensive sensors. “In a first step, we use the data that our pumps produce

anyway” explains Thomas Knecht, Senior Manager Global Field & Remote Service, at Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum. “However, an additional sensor can be used to increase the predictability in more complex tasks.” The conditionbased maintenance conducts maintenance measures only when triggered by actual wear. The monitoring solution enables not only the display of trend curves, critical states, and the storage of historical data, but also the calculation of cumulated consumption values. Necessary maintenance work can be displayed on a maintenance plan panel, offering a related maintenance manual while showing the required tools and necessary spare parts. “In the future, monitoring will be further integrated into our service processes,” says Knecht. In the simplest case, a service technician gets the information of a service request directly to his Smartphone. In the next step, a service order is automatically created in SAP and mobilizes a technician or triggers the supply of spare parts on the basis of the stored monitoring data. “Our customers want one thing: system avail-

The service organization will continue to enhance performance in this area and further invest in the training of service technicians to use this system. Therefore, the monitoring tool increases customer plant availability with a ready-made service solution whilst optimizing the service which Oerlikon Leybold can offer customers. “Here the entire service

organization grows - the strategic direction for these measures were already set by the transferring services to the Dresden competence center and also internationally we strengthen our proximity to the customer. The expansion of our customer service locally, as well as the possibilities offered by remote services are crucial points for further success, “says Dr. Martin Füllenbach, CEO Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum. www.oerlikon.com

CELEBRATION AT INAUGURATION OF NEW COMPANY BUILDING Major investment in Theegarten-Pactec’s company history

Theegarten-Pactec, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of packaging technologies for confectionery, inaugurated a new manufacturing/assembly complex and office building at the company’s long-standing headquarters in Dresden.

“F

or Theegarten-Pactec, the new building is the foundation needed to continue building high-tech machines for our customers and secure long-term growth,” explains Markus Rustler, President & CEO of Theegarten-Pactec. “The new building has also resulted in the creation of around 50 new jobs. We are delighted that the first construction phase is now complete,

thus setting another milestone in the company’s history, which goes back over 80 years.” The company’s positive performance in recent years meant that the existing buildings had grown too small. The new assembly buildings are designed to create better assembly conditions for complex lines and in particular to facilitate startup operations in Dresden itself so that seamless project workflows are

guaranteed for Theegarten-Pactec and its customers. The TheegartenPactec site will increase in size as a result, extending to a total area of 50,000 m2. The entire project will be implemented in three construction phases and will also involve the phased demolition of existing buildings. During the first construction phase, the office building and the first part of the assembly/manufacturing building were

constructed. This phase is now complete. This is being followed by the demolition of the old building and the construction of the second half of the manufacturing and assembly facilities. Both should be complete by mid-2017. The new construction consists of an office building with production and warehouse areas, staff amenities and technology facilities as well as a car park with 170 parking spaces. The offices provide space for various usages such as research and development, design, customer service and sales. An employee canteen with a terrace is also located in the interior courtyard. Mechanical production and varnishing is accommodated in the manufacturing building. A number of productionrelated offices with a gallery are situated adjacent to the manufacturing building. An assembly building and a warehouse are also under construction. The demolition of existing buildings and the construction of the new facilities are taking place on the site without interrupting operations. A total of 5,500 m2 of office space has been built with a high-spec building envelope, which is to be certified in accordance with the KfW Development Bank’s energy efficiency standard. The office building is a steel concrete construction in a cast-in-place concrete structure with beam-less flat slab ceilings. The facade is a curtain wall consisting of various materials such as fibre cement panels, metal panels and expanded metal. The offices have a ventilation and air-conditioning system. The assembly and manufacturing buildings, which are fitted with cranes and hoisting equipment throughout, will cover a total area of 15,500 m2. They are equipped with radiant ceiling panels for district heating and a ventilation system is also installed. The new buildings provide space for 400 workstations. The location in the Reick district of Dresden is an urban, mature setting with public transport links and easy access to the A17.

IN SHORT

With 400 employees, TheegartenPactec is a major employer in the Dresden region. “Thanks to careful planning, this mammoth project has so far not impacted on our daily operations, the design and manufacture of packaging systems,” says Rustler. “The three pillars of the construction project – time, cost and quality – are in line with expectations due to outstanding planning by our partner Vollack and the execution of these plans by the individual trades.” With a team of 300 employees, including 150 architects and engineers, Vollack is a specialist in the methodical development, planning and implementation as well as revitalisation of sustainable and ener

gy-efficient offices, industrial buildings and health sector buildings. Theegarten-Pactec worked on its first joint project with Vollack in Saxony in 2006: the renovation of the eastern hall (Osthalle) in the building (assembly and warehouse building) in a project valued at approx. € 300,000. Even then it could be seen that the building would need to be completely renovated as some of Theegarten’s building stock in Dresden dates from the 1950s and 1960s. In 2010, the two partners developed the initial concrete ideas for converting or renovating Theegarten-Pactec’s old buildings. In October 2010, development of the site with the old buildings began. Land was subsequently purchased at the old site, opening up new prospects for the future. The building application was submitted in April 2013. The demolition work commenced in November 2013. 87

50 YEARS OF ERCA - FFS INVENTOR CELEBRATES ITS ANNIVERSARY IMA Erca, the creator of form, fill and seal technology (FFS), is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Much has happened in the packaging machinery industry over that past half century - here’s a look back.

The M-F 14 FFS machine can produce polypropylene cups.

F

ifty years ago, the “FormFill-Seal“ concept developed by IMA Erca marked the dawn of a new era in the packaging machinery industry. It dramatically simplified the entire production process for packing liquid and pasty foods: Now a single machine could be used to form cups of different sizes from plastic film, fill them with yogurt, sour cream or similar products, and seal them immediately. Moreover, the FFS concept made it possible to achieve higher standards of hygiene than had been the case with pre-formed cups. And it also reduced material and energy costs

- saving as much as 60%, depending on the product. In the years that followed, FFS technology continued to inspire a whole series of innovations. In 1966, IMA Erca developed the first cup with an interior label for Gervais “Petit Suisse” yogurt. In 1970, the company introduced the PPN Composite Cup for improved labeling. During this cup’s forming process, the label was drawn at the same time and perfectly matched to the individual shape of the cup. The FFS system with “Open Mold” technology for the production of thermoformed containers with

and without labeling followed in 1980. This new system significantly reduced trim waste and enabled additional cost savings in the use of materials. Keeping costs under control One of the more recent examples of innovation is the “EF 400” with inline fruit feed. Launched on the market in 2010, this FFS machine minimizes fruit loss. The investment costs for this machine can be amortized in less than two years. At 300 production days per year with 10 daily product changes, for example, the EF 400 saves approximately 180,000 kilograms 89

of fruit mixture – the machine pays for itself in 21 months. IMA Erca unveiled another minor revolution at the industrial trade fair “interpack 2014”: Since that time, the previously established “M-F 14” multipack FFS machine can also produce cups made of polypropylene (PP). Not only does this reduce costs, it offers the advantage that individual cups are significantly more robust and the multipacks can be separated more easily. The PP option can be seamlessly integrated into existing M-F 14 machines. Meanwhile, IMA Erca is filling more than just food: The “EF 600” form, fill and seal machine produces and fills transparent cups with mineral water, for example. The EF 600 manufactures up to 27,000 cups per hour with filling quantities of 100, 125, 200 or 250 ml. It uses APET material, or amorphous polyethylene terephthalate. This material is transparent like glass, but not nearly as heavy. At the same time, the amorphous structure makes them easy to grip, without the cups “buckling” when used for drinking. Environmental protection and award-winning innovation One of IMA Erca’s other core concerns has always been environmental protection. That’s why the company provides its customers with biodegradable packaging materials that minimize the use of raw materials. Take the renewable material “PLA” for example: It can be composted and then disintegrates into the natural components of carbon and water,

One of the first form, fill and seal machines from IMA Erca

With the form-fill-seal concept, IMA Erca simplified the production process for packaging liquid and pasty foods.

thus providing for a positive energy balance. PLA is compatible with all dairy products and preserves the taste and flavor of the products. In addition, IMA Erca relies on monomaterial packaging, which simplifies recycling, because cup, lid and label are all made of the same material. Moreover, all IMA Erca machines are available in three different hygiene levels - “clean”, “ultra-clean“ and “aseptic” - depending on product requirements and shelf life. Since its foundation in 1965, IMA Erca’s innovative force has helped it

to become the world’s leading supplier of form, fill and seal machinery. Today some 2,000 machines all over the world are supporting major international food and beverage corporations with efficient thermoforming solutions and pioneering cup formats. That performance has also earned IMA Erca several awards, including the “Oscar de l’Emballage” and the “WorldStar Packaging Award” as well as the “Danone Supplier Award” in the category “Best Innovative Idea”.

LABELLING TECHNOLOGIES: HELPING BEVERAGE PRODUCERS MEET FAST-PACED CONSUMER TRENDS

W

hen shopping for consumables the choice of a product is made in a matter of seconds. With such an incredibly brief decision-making process, it is even more important for a brand to stand out on the supermarket shelf. During this crucial so called ‘moment of truth’ a label can significantly help in attracting consumers’ attention and encouraging them to select one beverage over another. In today’s changing market a manufacturer needs to be able to adapt quickly to succeed. Sidel offers a wide range of labelling solutions to enable beverage producers to bring new products to market quickly, using flexible and reliable solutions to meet fast-paced consumer trends. Challenges to meet new consumer trends The consumers of today are more concerned with beverages that reflect their personality and individuality. It is no longer enough to deliver a quality product in a package with any label. A key contributor to success is personalisation and products that match the consumer’s lifestyle. A successful example of adapting to consumer trends is Coca-Cola’s personalised label redesigns in their impactful “Share A Coke” campaign. It was a simple idea with a great outcome - a 2% increase in sales in the US. Trends impact the way we perceive products - especially their packaging and specifically the labelling. In the trend landscape of today, it is no longer just a case of creating a concept and getting it to the consumer safely and successfully. It requires the manufacturer to be fast, flexible and willing to challenge convention. It is about thinking consumer first and thoroughly understanding how to build end-user engagement. Labellers that are flexible and offer the capacity for

simple and fast changeovers can, in this new trend landscape, help to bring new products to market quickly and efficiently. For beverage producers, the challenge lies in following new consumer trends while incorporating these successfully into production and across the supply chain. It is not as simple as having the product “speak” to the consumer. There is the long production process to consider and consumer trends are also driving changes in this area. Many consumers expect sustainable production and a fully recyclable product. Great labelling can, in turn, improve the beverage producer’s green profile with thinner, glueless and therefore more eco-friendly labelling, deliver a reduction in costs across several areas - from materials to maintenance as well as a boost in productivity. Innovative solutions for all labelling needs As the leading global provider of PET solutions for liquid packaging, Sidel has the experience to meet beverage producers’ needs for both attractive packaging and sustainable production. Sidel understands the importance of equipment quality and reliability, as well as the need for equipment and services that are responsive and flexible, adapting easily to changing production requirements. Sidel offers innovative labelling technologies that can help beverage producers, whatever those

production requirements. Over more than 40 years of labelling experience, Sidel has installed almost 4,000 labelling machines worldwide. The range of many different technologies developed by the company over that time is extensive and the solutions offered currently includes rollfed, pressure-sensitive, pre- cut and shrink-sleeve labelling machines. These are suitable for many different types and shapes of containers and items, from liquids to food, oils, cosmetics and household goods. Sidel labelling solutions are easy to use and flexible, enabling producers to adopt different label types and materials on the same machine. All Sidel labelling solutions are designed to maximise both the impact the products make on the shelf and the profit earned on each item sold. Michele Morrone, a member of the Labelling Product Management team at Sidel, comments: “The way goods are labelled has a significant impact on their success in the marketplace, with the design and branding a major influencer on consumer purchasing decisions. Producing attractively labelled products cost effectively is therefore crucial.” Rollfed remains a popular option The hot-glue application of rollfed labels remains the main method through which PET containers for soft drinks and water are labelled. Although paper labels are still applied, the continued success of roll91

fed labelling is today mostly down to plastic labels, which remain popular with both producers and consumers thanks to their physical and practical qualities. Having a high-gloss finish, they are waterproof and consequently less likely to be affected by adverse storage and transportation conditions. The latest generation of Sidel Matrix™ SL70 is a highly modular rollfed labeller with an output of up to 60,000 bottles per hour (bph), which can be installed in various different layouts and easily reconfigured. Changeover times for containers of different shapes and dimensions are 30% faster than previous generations and can be achieved in just 25 minutes by a single operator. With an open structure for easy cleaning, it requires 40% less downtime for maintenance. It has direct drive motorisation which eliminates the need for lubrication points, has no requirement for below- the-table maintenance and has easily replaceable main modules. Sleeve and rollfed labels: both applied by one unique machine Statistics reveal that the market for shrink sleeve labelling (SSL) is growing faster than any other labelling process. There are several reasons for this success. The larger area available for graphics on highshrinkage, full-body sleeves naturally presents designers with greater opportunity for creativity. The extra space also facilitates the positioning of data such as volume, contents, barcode and other legally required information, as well as enabling producers to add messages and communications of their own. By covering the whole

EQUIPMENT

bottle including the cap, the label sleeve can also serve effectively as a seal. In the case of sensitive beverages, it can be used as a light barrier to protect the contents. As the sleeve is heat-shrunk into position, it adapts to any surface and eliminates restrictions due to container shape. It also removes the need for glue and solvents, therefore making recycling of the basic PET raw material much easier. Designed to meet growing demand for shrink sleeve labels, Sidel Rollsleeve is a flexible rotary labeller that offers production flexibility in terms of labelling. It allows easy switching between sleeves and rollfed label application in a single machine, requiring only ten more minutes than a normal changeover. It also offers the ability to use multiple types of label material to achieve sustainability and cost savings. Sidel Rollsleeve is unique in terms of the sleeve creation, which takes place within the machine. This requires far less operation on the converter side and label costs are therefore substantially reduced. The machine is equipped with an ergonomically designed, robust and precise linear labelling station. The infeed roller, driven by servomotors, and a single rotating knife, create a clean, precise and waste-free cut every time. It is one of the fastest sleevers on the market, running at speeds of up to 54,000 bph. Premium self-adhesive and reliable cold-glue labelling Ideal for long print runs, the cold-glue application of labels is a proven and established method still dominating the food and beverage industry because of its

The modular Sidel Matrix™ SL70 primarily uses wraparound roll-fed technology

exceptional reliability. Also having a high market-share, self-adhesive, pressuresensitive labels (PSL) are particularly suited to the premium labelling of both beverages and non-beverages. This is because of the number of shape, size and imaging opportunities that they present to producers. The Sidel SL 90 is a high-speed rotary labeller designed for both self-adhesive and cold-glued labels. It can easily switch between both kinds of labels through the simple replacement of the modular labelling stations. A smart modular labeller that delivers high-quality output and gives producers maximum flexibility in applying labels to all kinds of packaging, the Sidel SL 90 carries out the high-quality placement of pressure sensitive labels. Optimised label stretching reduces the risk of wrinkles and bubbles and high label adhesion results in an attractive ‘no-label’ look. This labeller is exceptionally reliable for cold glue label application, even under extreme production conditions such as 24-hour operation and high temperatures. It is also suitable for high speeds and offers excellent flexibility. Sidel is continually innovating in the field of labelling to meet growing market demands in terms of efficiency, sustainability, safety and low maintenance. Output rates are increasing to meet the demands of high production. Many developments are designed to reduce usage of raw material (label thickness, glue, etc) and consumption of energy. The design of the labellers is being simplified, with a greater attention paid to ergonomics for more user-friendly operation and reduced maintenance.

inx Printing Technologies has expanded its portfolio of laser coders with the introduction of a new top-of-the-range CO2 steered beam model. The Linx SLHP (Scribing Laser High Performance) produces superior quality codes at some of the fastest speeds currently available on the market - for example, in excess of 70,000 bottles per hour on a high speed bottling line. Its ability to produce complicated codes, such as GS1 which can include a 2D data matrix code, is especially suitable for pharmaceutical coding requirements. The speed and power of the 120W laser mean there is a shorter dwell time on the product, reducing the chance of outside interference during the coding process to deliver the highest quality codes without errors. In addition, the combination of speed and power can create highly complex codes that are also permanent, making the coder ideal for anti-counterfeiting measures for high

value goods, and to meet strict traceability requirements. The Linx SLHP can operate over multiple lines, coding onto many different materials such as glass, PET, PVC and other plastics, rubber extrusions, painted surfaces, printed card, film and label, and tobacco products. This gives it the versatility to code a wide variety of information, including date, time, production details and legislative text, barcodes and logos, for both static and moving applications. End markets include premium alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, FMCG, cosmetics and perfumes, pharmaceuticals, automotive, electronics, building products and cabling. Efficient use of the laser power prolongs the laser tube life, making this proven platform a long-term reliable coding option. Equally important, the Linx SLHP has no consumables, with cooling of the coder achieved by a blower unit rather than by water cooling or factory air, which reduces operating costs. The simple-to-use integral keyboard and display, featuring three level password protection, provides ease

of set up and operation. The software includes several languages as standard, making the Linx SLHP ideal for global exporters. With the arrival of the Linx SLHP, Linx now offers one of the widest ranges of laser coders, from entry level to high specification models, enabling the company to tailor solutions to individual customer needs. “We believe the Linx SLHP is in a league of its own, thanks to its ability to deliver excellent quality codes - especially suitable for high value goods - at the fastest speeds,” comments Matt Eastham, Laser Product Manager at Linx Printing Technologies. “Its flexibility means it is the perfect choice for many different applications, in particular where lines are operating round the clock and where there is a high volume output. And its speed and versatility also make it future proof, allowing companies to diversify or expand their coding requirements without further investment.” www.linxglobal.com/en

order, “We were naturally delighted to receive this latest order from H & A, we have been able to demonstrate to the clients the flexibility of the Makro labellers and the team at Chorley have become very conversant with the Makro machines finding them easy to set up, which is essential for a contract packer, and then go on to label a clean and accurate bottle dress, sometimes on very complicated labelling formats. Lee Tayburn, Group Production Director, again had no hesitation in awarding the latest contract to Makro, he said,” We have had excellent back up and support from Richard and his team here in the UK, the attention to detail prior to the machines leaving the factory in Italy means they are very much plug and play by the time they are installed in our lines. As a contract packer, handling anything

from 100 cases to 10,000 cases in a single run, accuracy is of paramount importance to us and Makro have always excelled at this.” The Mak 3 was installed in late summer, in good time for the Autumn bottling for the all important Christmas sales period. www.makrolabelling.it

ducing threaded fasteners and eliminating lamination points between surfaces to minimize areas where water can be trapped and bacteria can grow. Improved water/product containment is the result of a higher infeed frame plate with an added deflection flange to help shed water off the plate, sloped deflectors on both sides and a deflector flange on the discharge shear. These four new flanges reduce fasteners and laminations where microbes can grow while moving drip points to within the envelope of the equipment. This makes it easier for processors to mount a drain pan under the system and better captures water and product spillage to minimize spillage to the floor, improving sanitation and worker safety. New top and side bearing/sprocket covers and chain guards are made of punch plate material that enables visual inspection of the bearings, drive sprockets, wear strips and chain without removing the covers or guards, which eases maintenance. The idle side cover hinges down without removal of the top cover to further ease maintenance. Top surfaces are sloped to reduce product buildup and shed water. The covers and guards enhance sanitation by enabling the areas behind them to be cleaned with a high pressure washdown without removing the covers and guards. Solid top covers are available as an option. A new motor mount features a drip pan below the gearbox with integrated standoffs. The single square tube support is positioned at a 45° angle to shed product and water. Mounting fasteners are reduced and blind back standoffs are used to further reduce threads and laminations.

An updated spray bar system, available as an option, eliminates U-bolts and bracket mounting laminations. The new brackets, which support both the infeed and side spray bars, utilize blind back standoffs and enable the top bearing/sprocket cover to be removed while the spray bars remain in place to enhance sanitation and ease maintenance. Key redesigned the optional CE cover, which used to be mounted using side plate retainer bolts and had to be removed before the top bearing/ sprocket covers could be removed. The new CE cover is mounted to the spray bar brackets, allowing the top bearing/sprocket covers and side plates to be removed without removing the CE cover, which eases maintenance.

Key offers customer demonstration and testing services at five locations including Walla Walla, Beusichem, and Hasselt as well as Sacramento, California, USA and Melbourne, Australia; and maintains a sales and service office in Santiago de Queretaro, Mexico.

An optional CE bearing cover protects workers from an exposed shaft end and features perforations for visual inspection of the shaft/bearing and easy cleaning. A new standard bearing/shaft guard exceeds OSHA standards to improve worker safety. Standard Rotary Sizing and Grading Systems that are adjusted manually now feature a hard stop mechanism that prevents an operator from overtightening the adjustment blocks while closing the gap between the rolls, which prevents the blocks from being damaged. The optional Auto Adjust has also been improved with the addition of electronic limit switches for fullopen and full-closed positions and a mechanical fail safe detent clutch to prevent blocks from being damaged. The new design is 100 percent metric, with metric fasteners, bearings, shafts and sprockets. This simplifies maintenance since the crew now needs only one tool set. Key will continue to support its installed base with imperial dimensioned rolls and components. All sanitation and maintenance enhancements are available on every new Rotary Sizing and Grading System, which includes Key’s Sliver Sizer Remover (SSR), Precision Size Grader (PSG) and Rotary Size Grader (RSG). Featuring on-the-fly tuning, no pinch points, self-cleaning stainless steel rollers, sealed corrosion resistant bearings for low maintenance and easy cleaning for quick product changeover, these systems help food processors enhance product quality while reducing maintenance and improving sanitation. TECHNOLOGY OF THE FUTURE

Varvel SpA launches innovative products thanks to its R&D department in the forefront which enables to hit important goals

V

arvel SpA, well-established Bologna-based company specialized in designing speed reducers and variators with sixty years of history and tradition, keeps aiming at the future. The company has recently passed the second phase of Horizon 2020, an European programme securing the necessary funds for a new cutting edge “smart reducer” prototype that will be able to operate without lubricant. The objective of this innovative project is the realization of a maintenance free worm gearbox in sizes 28, 40 and 50. An ambitious project which lasts 24-30 months and totaling €1,200,000. This European program is in fact the natural evolution of a hoped development process in which the company has demonstrated an unwavering commitment over the decades. Its success could really lead to a revolutionary product with a huge, positive impact on the community, in terms of efficiency, reduction of environmental impact, energy saving and safety. A similar challenge has not been undertaken yet by qualified competitors. “We accepted the challenge - says Francesco Berselli, President of Varvel SpA - with an enthusiasm born out of the great work delivered by everyone in Varvel over the years and still today, after the celebration of our Sixtieth anniversary. However important it may be, this goal is a starting point towards Europe and the whole world, strengthening the internationalization process that sees us today in more than 60 countries in all five continents.” “Our R&D has always been in the forefront - says Mauro Cominoli, Managing Director of Varvel SpA thanks to a constant exchange with universities, laboratories and national programmes. This effort enabled us to achieve significant results whose outcome will

be evident only in the next years.” The impact of a new “smart reducer” operating without lubricant would open new scenarios within the power transmission world and mechanics in general. It will bring high benefits in resource and machinery management, as well as the environmental impact reduction. Performances, reliability and product life-cycle will also benefit future scenarios that are already taking form in Varvel’s R&D. Constant improvement We can and must improve, especially when we need to combine global market’s requirements with increasingly performing products. That is why Varvel Spa has therefore decided to design a new range of bevel helical gearboxes in addition to the current series RO-RV, now called RO2. The major novelty of this gearbox series is the reduction ratio with two gear stages. The new bevel/helical gearboxes includes four sizes: - RO02 - torque 120 Nm - max 25 mm. hollow shaft. - RO12 - torque 200 Nm - max 30 mm. hollow shaft. - RO22 - torque 330 Nm - max 35 mm. hollow shaft.

- RO32 - torque 550 Nm - max 40 mm. hollow shaft. This first approach makes evident a significant feature of the new series: on average, torque capacity is higher by about 20% to 30% compared with that of key competitors on the market. Another notable technical feature is the selection of reduction ratios: gear ratios are from 1/5.2 to 1/51.5 for a total of twenty ratios so as to fulfil the majority of speeds asked by the market. A third technical feature is the monolithic structure of the gear housing: this is a key issue for this type of gearboxes, as usually the housing is the only connection to the machine frame. “That’s an important decision deriving from the utter decision to go on investing in the future, thanks to new proposals and ever advancing technology as to meet the specific needs of different markets, maintaining an international perspective while meeting the specific needs of our customers,” says Francesco Berselli, President of Varvel SpA. Mauro Cominoli, General Manager of Varvel SpA, says “It’s a farsighted albeit very concrete corporate policy that grounds on the knowledge that a product must be sound in terms of

102 VARVEL FP 5-15.indd 3

26/10/15 16:05

AUTOMATIONCOMPONENTS

quality and reliability, and also able to provide an effective solution that meets the different requirements of different realities in the market.” Certified ethics Varvel SpA obtained the certification for Health and Safety Management System according to the international standard BS OHSAS 18001 (British Standard Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series). The new certification integrates the already awarded UNI EN ISO 9001 and UNI EN ISO 14001 for quality and environment regulation - switching to a management system designed to strengthen internal organisation. The decision to join the programme aimed not only to reduce ownership risk of incurring in fines or interdiction measures for legislation breaches but also to manage more carefully health and safety issues starting from the initial phases of initial investments and production technology. Some of the most important phases the certified system focuses on are danger recognition and risk evaluation, outsourcing management and plant access, chemical substances processing, personal protection devices, hazard, injury and emergency management, training and performance improvement. Automation in Food & Beverage Varvel SpA ensures innovation and flexibility in the applications for the food industry. The manufacturing of

INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS

mechanical components for industrial processes requires significant flexibility in production. For this reason Varvel has stood out with regard to its production of gearboxes and variators for different small and medium-sized applications in various sectors. In the Food & Beverage industry, Varvel, in collaboration with a few manufacturers of industrial machines for pasta production, has gained considerable experience in devising and making worm, in-line, parallel shaft and shaft-mounted gearboxes that are compatible with the movements of industrial mixers. Varvel’s R&D department designs the reducers internally, starting from the client specifications and using the state-of-the-art computing software for gear design. Generally speaking, the pasta making machine consists of two separated vats; base ingredients are poured in the first vat, and then mixed by an auger powered by worm speed reducers or for machines with a greater capacity, bevel/ helical gearboxes. The dough is then put in the second vat where the ingredients are finely mixed in order to produce the fresh pasta. In this phase, a second auger is used driven by worm speed reducers or bevel/helical gearboxes. The dough is then pushed through a press chamber where it is extruded through a drawplate for the continuous production of the fresh pasta. A blade tool, connected to a worm reducer regulating the cutting speed for long or short-type pasta siz-

es, then automatically cuts the dough. Any of Varvel’s worm reducers or bevel/helical gearboxes can be used in the standard versions of this type of machinery. If required, special reducers can be made using FDA-approved (Food and Drug Administration) class H1 lubricants for the Food & Beverage industry that do not alter mechanical performance. Also, to further protect against the corrosive effect of cleaning agents used on the machines, another version of the reducer is available that is covered with a special type of paint that has been approved for use in the Food & Beverage industry. Regarding mills and animal feed equipment, it is becoming more and more important to perform a proper assessment of the atmospheres in which the machines operate since, as of 2003, the European Community classifies them as potentially explosive according to the ATEX Directive 94/9/CE. All machinery in such environments must be designed based on an adequate assessment of the risks of explosion. With regard to mechanical components, it may be sufficient to just use only suitable components that have been already classified by the ATEX Directive. In July 2003, Varvel was the first Italian gearbox manufacturer to submit its technical files to Notified Body number 0080: INERIS (French National Institute for Industrial Environment and Risks), for the certification of its products that are suitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The certification allows reducers to work in Group II (Surface Industries), Category II (Obligation of submitting technical files to the Notified Body), in explosive atmospheres with the presence of gas (G) or powder (D) in classified Zone 1 (2G) and Zone 21 (2D), the latter includes mills and animal feeding factories.

FRUCHTWELT BODENSEE BRINGS TOGETHER FARMERS, FRUIT GROWERS AND DISTILLERS

W

hile the interests and tastes of farmers, fruit growers and distillers are certainly diverse, one event will bring them all together and take visitors along new paths: the Fruchtwelt Bodensee international trade fair. From February 19 to 21, 2016, the spotlight will be on important questions facing Europe’s fruit-growing and agricultural sector, including political, practical and professional issues.

Days. Lecture series on the spottedwing drosophila and farm shops are also scheduled.

The effects of the Russian embargo, the challenges of crop protection and recent experiences with Germany’s minimum wage laws are just some of the key topics for the 37th Lake Constance Fruit Cultivation

“In 2016, the trade fair is covering an area of 28,000 sq. meters (300,000 sq. feet) across four exhibition halls, as well as both foyers and conference centers.

Seminars to stimulate the spirits also await the distillers. The entire program of lectures and seminars (all in German only) can be viewed at the Fruchtwelt Bodensee website. The organizers are expecting over 340 exhibitors, and look forward to welcoming many new vendors.

Besides the regular participants who’ve contributed to the quality of Fruchtwelt Bodensee for many years already, we’ve also managed to add many new exhibitors from various fields,” recounts Show Director Petra Rathgeber.

International trade fair featuring 37th Lake Constance Fruit Cultivation Days: more than 340 exhibitors from twelve nations expected – highlighting key political, practical and professional issues

For example, HVA Koeling cooling technology company from Belgium, Krodes anti-hail protection systems from the Czech Republic and the crop protection specialist Hardi from Wedemark will all be coming to Fruchtwelt Bodensee for the first time. Other new participants include Zanon, as one of the leading agricultural machinery manufacturers, and Merlo telescoping ladders from Bremen. The trade fair also welcomes debuts by Switzerland’s Silent AG compact tractors and machinery center, and Josef Ley, an importer-distributor and wholesaler for European manufacturers of trailers and farm equipment. For professionals, the trade fair highlight will be the 37th Lake Constance Fruit Cultivation Days. The opening day is dedicated to agricultural politics and the question of staying competitive in global markets. It will begin with a welcoming address by Alexander Bonde, Minister of Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection for the State of BadenWürttemburg, whose topics will in-

clude the potentials of organic fruit growing as well as the state government’s newly launched consultancy services for agriculturalists. After that is a talk by Jens Stechmann, Chairman of the German Fruit and Vegetable Commission (BOG), who will touch upon some of the profession’s central concerns, such as efforts to promote German fruit and vegetables, the National Action Plan for the sustainable use of plant protection products, and the certification of insecticides. Meanwhile, Helwig Schwartau from Hamburg’s Agricultural Market Information Company (AMI) will turn our attentions to global developments in the apple market, with a presentation on “Apple Trade Flows During the Russian Embargo.” As an expert in fruit marketing, he will discuss not only the market developments of today, but the routes and possibilities of tomorrow. The challenges of crop protection are examined in two dedicated lectures, one by Arno Fried, Departmental Head of the Interdistrict Special Crops Consultancy of the Bruchsal Agricultural Office, and another by Dr. Christian Scheer, Crop Protection Advisor for Fruit Growing

CONFERENCES

at the Lake Constance District Office. Throughout the weekend, a lecture series on farm shops will shed light on diverse aspects. For instance, novice and existing operators will learn about the foodstuff regulations that apply to farm shops as well as the latest changes to foodstuff labeling guidelines for farmgate sales. Furthermore, examples of farm shop ideas will be presented, support programs and governmental subsidies will be introduced, and taxation questions in terms of direct-to-consumer marketing will be addressed. In addition, the Lake Constance Rural Vendor Association will look at the benefits of cooperation and networking in terms of direct marketing. On the trade fair Sunday, a symposium will tackle the spotted-wing drosophila. Speakers from various international institutions will be there to discuss this pest, for which relatively few control strategies are known to exist. Presenters will explore questions about its spread, examine financial losses from a market perspective and recount experiences on the use of fine netting.

Two presentations will revolve around different aspects of Germany’s new minimum wage laws. Hubert Hengge, Director of Maschinenring Tettnang (a farmers’ cooperative association), will look at the experiences of the past year. Meanwhile, the relevant legislative changes for 2016 will be elucidated by Nicole Spiess, Social Policy Advisor at the Baden-Württemberg State Farmers’ Association. The seminars and lectures for distillers will also stimulate the spirits: Dr. Hermann Kolesch, President of the Bavarian Regional Office for Viticulture and Horticulture, will look at trends and developments in the spirits market. Dr. Günter Röhrig will discuss the use of wooden storage barrels for fruit brandies, and distillery consultant Dr. Klaus Hagmann will offer a “Practical Seminar on Liqueur” (both with admission fee, downloadable registration form at our website). Distillers can also learn about the legalities of operating an online shop, with a lecture given by Gerald Erdrich, Managing Director of the German Association of Small and Fruit Distilleries. www.fruchtwelt-bodensee.de

189 professional attendees of the local food processing industry. The demand of foreign technology is very high, and we are planning to organize the next conference during iFood 2016.” The next edition of iFood will take place end of August 2016 in Mashhad, Iran.
