POLYRETWIN, THE PACKAGING REVOLUTION IN THE PHARMACEUTICAL AND FOOD INDUSTRY
A
ndolfi & C. meets the needs of the pharmaceutical and food market thanks to the bene-fits of the ecological, recyclable and resistant Polyretwin laminated film, to be used on automated packaging machines. In this complicated moment, the pharmaceutical and food sectors are paying increasing attention to the population’s safety, hygiene and health. For this reason, they are looking for safer packaging with no risk of bacterial contamination and that can guarantee the perfect integrity of the product. The packaging has to be extremely resistant to contact and perforation and, above all, it has to have a little environmental impact.

Andolfi & C. was founded in 1961 and was one of the first companies in the Marche re-gion to begin the transformation of polyethene with particular attention to environmental sustainability. This care has laid the foundations of the position it currently occupies in the flexible packaging sector. Production flexibility and specialised workforce allow the company to meet the different needs of their customers globally. Andolfi has the answer to the demands of the pharmaceutical and food industries with 100% recyclable packaging films (as well as compostable and biodegradable films from renewable sources) offering cutting-edge technological solutions. Polyretwin is an eco-friendly recyclable laminated film that is much more resistant than polypaint with PP and PET, used on automatic packaging machines. Polyretwin ensures better production performance in terms of sealability and packaging speed as well as a significant cost reduction of the film per linear metre. Moreover, the film can be completely neutral or customised with the company’s graphics. Andolfi’s production line is equipped with modern co-extrusion systems with automatic control allowing the use of all materials in the converting sector with excellent results. Polyretwin is the revolution in the pharmaceutical and food industry that can finally meet the demands of today’s market thanks to its many advantages. www.andolfi.it

BIOGEST SRL: ANALYSIS OF FOOD CONTAINERS AND PACKAGING
T
he world of packaging intended for food contact is certainly one of the continuously evolving sectors, both in the regulatory and technological fields. All companies that produce and / or use food packaging face various problems every day. All materials that come into contact with food, from manufacturers’ packaging to crockery, cutlery, glass, ceramics and food storage containers, must be tested to ensure their safety. In fact, they must not transfer unacceptable quantities of their components to food. The analysis of materials intended for food contact protects the health of consumers. The current regulatory framework is complex, because alongside the analytical checks on the finished product, there is also the need to verify the compliance of the additives and technological adjuvants used that meet the legal requirements [Ministerial Decree 21 March 1973, Reg. CE 1935/2004 and Reg UE 10/2011] According to current legislation, all packaging intended for contact with food requires the carrying out of global and / or specific migration tests to verify the absence of release of harmful substance. Biogest Srl is able to carry out tests on: • global migration according to the methods DM 21/03/73 and UNI EN 1186 • specific migrations according to the UNI EN 13130 methodologies (they include the migrations of monomers (eg. Phthalic acids, vinyl chloride, etc ...) • migration of traces of technological adjuvants • control of the composition • purity requirements • sensory analysis (PANEL TEST), both olfactory and gustatory, according to UNI and DIN standards • migration of dyes • searches for pollutants (eg. PHTHALATES, DIPB, Disopropylnapltalenes DIPN, Bisphenol A, o-phenylphenol, etc.) 10

or decades now, ARCA ETICHETTE has equipped its operations and dedicated itself to the cosmetics sector, as a solution provider specializing in the production of labels and self-adhesive solutions, sleeves and labeling, tracing and marking technology. Our broad and complete range of self-adhesive solutions is produced in compliance with NBF standards, the ISO9001 certified quality system and other certifications (Ecovadis, BRCGS, UL, FSC). Roughly 40% of Arca’s turnover is achieved through the cosmetics and personal care sector. At Arca, excellence is a primary motivating factor, which is perhaps why our labels always have something extra. From the selection of materials, to testing standards, the best printing machines, automated control systems that verify 100% of the product, check lists that monitor and record checks during all stages of production and, lastly, the issuing of batches, all performed by experts attentive to every detail. Arca makes use of the very latest generation, recently acquired, transformation technologies, including analogue (flexography, screen printing, offset and mixed techniques) and digital (offset and inkjet, as well as mixed digital-analogue techniques). Arca has now turned its attention to sustainability and environmental issues, with all investments in the past five years aimed at improving our energy balance ecosystems. These range from structural interventions on buildings, fitted with thermal cladding, to indoor interventions that include the complete replacement of all LED lighting sources to ensure better lighting and energy savings. We have opted to source our energy 100% from sustainable sources, entirely eliminating solvents at our company site and replacing them on all printing machines with UV-LED drying systems that are more advanced, safer and provide cost savings, thus contributing enormously to energy savings and reducing CO2 impact. In particular, significant investments have also been made on digital printing technologies that bear a highly effective Green imprint (minimized waste, with ink being optimized to minimum requirements, and no plastic or metal printing systems to be disposed of at the end of production, more than halving energy consumption per unit of product). Regarding materials,

HIGH-VELOCITY PACKAGING KEEPS PACE WITH GROWING DEMAND
M
any convenience foods are short-term fads, but there are some that have stood the test of time – for decades indeed – including the humble instant noodle. They are just so easy to make! The latest pandemic has also proven how important tasty, easy-to-make comfort food has been for populations everywhere, with some figures pointing to a doubling of consumption. “There is a massive array of noodle market maturities,” explains Alessandro Rocca, Sales Engineering Director at Cama Group. “Some markets are well established; some are seeing rising demand & major growth is anticipated others. But all of these markets have something in common – the need to introduce further economies by exploiting packaging automation. In a recent project, Cama was tasked with developing a new secondary packaging solution for one of the worlds largest food and confectionary suppliers, at a brand-new greenfield site in India. The customer, seeing a 30% increase in noodle demand even before the pandemic, was eager to start exploiting the capabilities and flexibilities that automation would deliver. Cama’s solution comprised two of its Breakthrough Generation (BTG) IN Series case packers, each of which is fed by three high speed in-feed lines. In operation, each infeed supplies products at the rate of 330 per feed. The product packages are turned on their edge and enter a racetrack, which creates the first batch configuration. These then feed into a stacking device, which assembles the product stacks. Once the packaging configuration completed all products are transferred into mono-axis conveyor, which takes production from each in feed (with a slot for each) and, once full, advances them to the case packer, where a pusher pushes the noodle collations into the pre-assembled American case. These are then sealed using glue, tape or both before being checked for integrity and passed to the outfeed. 18

The key to truly flexible noodle packaging is the ability to package both single and multipacks (up to six) in the same case, with very little intervention. Cama’s IN Series solution can actually handle anything from 40 to 100 packs in same case style. We have also developed a way to very quickly adjust the loaders, keeping a complete changeover down to just 32 minutes! Cama’s Breakthrough Generation (BTG) concept is setting the standard in secondary packaging. Machines deliver modular, scalable frameworks that offer easy entry and access, coupled to a hygienic machine design. Within this framework, contemporary automation solutions, including advanced rotary and linear servo technology, is tightly coupled to in-house-developed robotics, to deliver the all-important flexibility and adaptability required by modern packaging operations. “Industry 4.0 capabilities were another important facet to this project,” explains Massimo Monguzzi, R&D Manager at Cama. “Our customer is a front runner in the deployment of connected manufacturing solutions and, it could be argued, its size and global reach means it also dictates 20
the direction that many other companies follow. “Augmented Reality very quickly made it onto the customer’s wish list,” he explains. “The COVID-19 situation led to a halt in location-based training and as this was a brand new system for the customer, it asked us to look at how we could help them get to know how to use the machine quickly. AR is also being exploited for day-to-day operations, to guide operators through changeovers and maintenance. “Our deployment of contemporary automation solutions means that these Industry 4.0 capabilities are in easier reach for all customers,” Monguzzi and Rocca conclude, “even those with older machines, as the AR capabilities feed off the original 3D CAD data. And we have seen incredibly positive real-life results recently, where they have proved vital for FATs, training, maintenance and operation, all delivered and performed virtually!” www.camagroup.com

ext date 25 to 28 January 2022 The trade fairs interplastica, International Trade Fair for Plastics and Rubber, and upakovka, No. 1 Trade Fair in Russia for Processing and Packaging, scheduled for 26-29 January 2021 at the AO Expocentre exhibition centre in Krasnaya Presnya in Moscow, have been cancelled and will take place on their next regular dates, 25-28 January 2022. This is Messe Düsseldorf’s response to the ongoing pandemic situation and the current tightening of quarantine regulations in Russia. “The decision was taken by Messe Düsseldorf in close cooperation with Messe Düsseldorf Moscow,” emphasises Erhard Wienkamp, Managing Director of Messe Düsseldorf, and continues: “Moscow has taken stricter measures to contain the corona pandemic due to the drastic increase in the number of infections. Cultural, educational and other events are prohibited until midJanuary. No one can say at the moment what will happen immediately afterwards.” The current announcement enables all participants of the interplastica and upakovka to react in time, to reschedule and to concentrate on the event date in January 2022. interplastica is the most important business platform for the Russian plastics and rubber industry. It offers a representative overview of machinery, raw materials and equipment, such as plastics processing and recycling plants, welding machines, measuring and control technology, raw materials and supplies, as well as plastic and rubber products. interplastica is particularly aimed at representatives of the plastics, chemical and mechanical engineering industries. As a member of the interpack alliance, upakovka with its offerings for the packaging and related process in26

dustries is aimed at the target groups of food, beverages, confectionery and bakery products, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, non-food and industrial goods. The international orientation of both trade fairs enables visitors to find out about innovations from all parts of the world and obtain offers specially tailored to the Russian market. Messe Düsseldorf Moscow is currently investigating to what extent it can offer interested companies other presentation options for 2021. The next regional trade fair as a live event will be the already firmly established interplastica Kazan, Trade Fair Plastics and Rubber, parallel to the Tatarstan Oil, Gas & Petrochemicals Forum in the Republic of Tartastan/Russia in September 2021. The exact date will be announced shortly. www.k-globalgate.com www.interpackalliance.com
With open minds and a willingness to experiment, packaging suppliers are mastering change
P
ackaging is one of the most effective ways of communicating with customers. Not only does it say something about the content, but increasingly it also speaks for itself and its environmental impact. Packaging has generally fallen into disrepute with many consumers. It is often perceived as superfluous and harmful to the environment, and for many people it has become a symbol of polluted landscapes and oceans. While it may be obvious to packaging manufacturers that this negative image is not true, there is still much to
YOUR PACKAGING INSIDER
25/11/20 11:09
column be done to implement a universal disposal and recycling system for packaging. The good news is that as one of the most important marketing tools, packaging itself can also do something to help improve the situation. Packaging doesn’t just help manufacturers to sell their products, but also to position themselves and their products and create a positive impression. In this context, it functions as one of the most effective media for brand communication, providing information and decision-making tools, and creating trust. This can work just through the design alone. Minimalist packaging with fewer design features can already convey authenticity and intrinsic value, while at the same time paring down packaging material. But packaging has yet another wider responsibility, and that is to more or less represent the entire product and its intrinsic value. The environmental compatibility of a product is often judged by its packaging. Inconsistencies relating to its sustainability are picked up by consumers very quickly and can rapidly have the opposite of the desired effect if the packaging claims do not match the reality. Packaging as communicator A key task for packaging manufacturers and their customers is to create trust in the packaging and provide information about its important features. In addition, companies should provide information about its packaging in an understandable and honest way. Why was this material used? What is the best way for the consumer to dispose of it? This and other information must be communicated clearly, so that it can also be implemented and to prevent the failure of a circular economy because the recycling is too complex a task for the consumer. If a new packaging is being developed, for example, it should be designed so that it will easily end up in the correct bin or bag, and in such a way that it can be optimally utilised by the recycling companies. This is often not the case for composite materials, which should be avoided wherever possible, as the different materials cannot be readily separated by consumers and are often not identifiable as composite material. That this can work is demonstrated by the example of Unilever’s soup pouches, which are now made from a mono-material and are therefore easier to recycle. Brand manufacturers best master these tasks by collaborating with packaging manufacturers, as this example shows. This is how to avoid mistakes and reduce expensive development costs. There are often technical and technological hurdles to be overcome, for example to make packaging smaller or plastic film thinner, without immediately having to invest in a new machinery park. There is no question that for new product packaging, sustainability and the many associated aspects like recycling, ecological footprint, and CO2 reduction, need to play a key role. If only because increasingly, retailers are
rubrica PI 2-20_2.indd 4
YOUR PACKAGING INSIDER
responding to demands for more environmentally friendly packaging and also want to have this aspiration reflected in the products they sell. After all, more environmentally friendly products are a good way of promoting your company. There are plenty of examples on supermarket shelves meanwhile. Good examples call for brave decisions Many commercial enterprises have made the reduction of packaging waste and greater recyclability a priority. This may take the form of dispensing with packaging altogether, e.g. Aldi’s organic cucumbers, which until recently were shrink-wrapped in plastic, or by replacing plastic trays with cardboard trays, as the Kaufland hypermarket chain did with its Purland-brand mince. Even if these are just isolated measures, consumers do take notice of them. The Rewe Group has also set itself the ambitious goal of using only environmentally-friendly own-brand packaging (in German only) by the end of 2030, and in doing so is setting standards, for branded article manufacturers in supermarkets as well. The development efforts that go towards the new packaging are often not visible to consumers. However, the example of frozen food producer Frosta shows that these efforts ultimately do pay off. After initially high development costs and moderate growth, the Hamburg-based company is meanwhile benefitting from its transparency about ingredients and its cutting-edge packaging. The trays for the company’s gourmet fish fillet range (in German only) are made entirely of cardboard meanwhile and can be disposed of as waste paper. Following trailblazers like Werner and Merz, manufacturers like Henkel are also showing meanwhile that plastic packaging does not have to be less environmentally compatible if it can be completely recycled, for example with its Pril concentrated washing-up liquid in recycled plastic bottles (in German only). Alb-Gold, a smaller company that produces pasta, also took the plunge and is now offering its pasta products in paper bags instead of the usual tubular plastic bags. For this innovation the company was a worthy winner of the German Packaging Award at FACHPACK 2019. So it is often smaller companies that show a willingness to experiment and risk new things. As a reward, they gain the trust of consumers and the “big players” follow their example. For many corporations meanwhile, sustainability goals have also become part of their self-imposed obligations and are disclosed in regular sustainability reports. Transparency and a willingness to deal openly with criticism are a major part of successful sustainability management and the realisation of a functioning circular economy. In this context, packaging plays a special role as a medium for communication.

AUTOMATED PRINT AND APPLY, A MATTER OF CHOICE
S
electing an automated print and apply system can be a daunting task, especially when it’s a company’s first foray into automated labelling. As the name implies, the print engine is the key component of the whole system and its choice should not be taken lightly. The usual selection process revolves around specific aspects: already owned models, printing speed, Direct Thermal Vs Thermal Transfer, resolution etc... But that’s limiting, not to say that is a mistake; there are other factors, often overlooked, that should be seriously considered during the evaluation process. Serviceability Just like a vehicle engine, there are many elements of the print engine that require scheduled cleaning, maintenance and, sometimes, replacement; components such as the thermal print head or the platen roller. If these items are difficult to replace, or if areas of the printer are not readily accessible for cleaning, the result can be defective printing, frustrated users and production line downtime. Sometimes a more in-depth service work is required, being this the case it’s fundamental the print engine can be easily removed and put back in place as fast as possible. This removable print engines, often referred to as an “OEM print engine”, provide two important benefits: ease of access, ease of replace. To ensure service can be done in a timely manner, it’s important for key internal components to be simply accessible and that most of them can be reached without the need to disassemble other areas of the printer. Ask your technical personnel for their experience with different print engine models. We did so. That’s why SATO specialised itself in OEM engines and our modules are the best in class when it comes to changing a print head without tools or accessing the PCB for maintenance. Adaptability Print engines are vastly different “animals”
28
when compared to traditional desktop label printers. The latter generally see either relatively low volume label production or bursts followed by long periods of idle time. Also, minor detail, they are generally in an office or other protected environment. Print and apply engines, on the other hand, see long periods of continuous production - up to 24 hours a day, seven days a week – directly in the production environment. With this level of rigorous use, it’s critically important for the selected print engine to have a fully committed design, development and support team in place as well as a long standing history of success and reliability in the market. SATO not only can offer that, 80 years in the business speak for themselves, but it’s also capable of offering printers with both the smarts

and the capabilities of a desktop model and the resistance of a print engine. A partner of us was working with Arcelor Mittal and they needed a print engine capable of working in an environment with a temperature variating between 0°C and -40°C. Although we had better performances than competitors, we were still facing one technical challenge: the printer had to be capable of supporting a Zebra emulation inside a SAP system. Long story short: after some testing, turned out that the CL4NX series was perfectly capable of supporting the ZPL emulation and adapting to itself to the harsh environment. All thanks to the AEP suite, an AI platform residing inside SATO printers. Conclusion Technical specifications are just the first step of the selection process; just looking at the datasheet, or even worse making a choice based on the matching between your current desktop fleet and the new print engines can be detrimental for the whole production plant. Adding the above criteria to the selection process is guaranteed to help companies choose a print engine that meets not only the technical requirements of the application but also the operational needs of the organization and the capabilities of its personnel. SARCHIO, THE QUALITY OF ORGANIC, VEGAN AND GLUTEN-FREE NATURE SINCE 1982 meets Tecno Pack’s technology
Cesare Roberto
S
archio’s story began nearly 40 years ago. It was founded on 2 September 1982 in Carpi, in the province of Modena, to offer healthy, natural and high-quality food every day. The forward-looking vision of Cesare Roberto, chief executive of the company, was to promote a lifestyle based on a correct diet using organic food, free of synthetic chemical substances and respecting the fertility of the soil, human health and the environment. The strong link with the nature is also reflected in the name he chose for the company: Sarchio, an old farming tool of rural tradition. The first products made by Sarchio are linked to the Italian traditional cuisine: pasta, sauces, extra virgin olive oil and other main ingredients of the Mediterranean diet. Over the years, Sarchio’s offer has expanded and specialized to meet the consumers’ different requests and needs. Paying great attention to nutritional values and health benefits, in addition to the more traditional Italian products, Sarchio has added to their range more innovative food products. With a focus on gluten-free and vegan solutions, the company has started producing biscuits, cereal and seed bars, chocolate, rice cakes, crackers and breadsticks, as well as breakfast cereal for those who follow particular dietary styles or have an intolerance to some ingredients. 34

Today, Sarchio’s offer includes over 150 organic products, including the gluten-free and vegan lines – a complete range of products, ideal for those who have to give up gluten as well as for vegetarians, vegans, adults, children and anyone who wants to make a healthier and lighter diet a real lifestyle. Spreading the culture of a correct and healthy organic diet with light and balanced foods has always been Sarchio’s mission. In addition to this, the company is renowned for their artisan care in the production process, starting from a careful selection of the best raw materials, focusing on organic, wholemeal, unrefined and gluten-free ingredients. In 2017, Sarchio added a new structure to its historic headquarters in Carpi. It is more than 6,000 square meters divided into three plants with nine production lines in total and

departments working only on glutenfree products, to manage better and more safely their processing. The company decided to build a new “Sarchio house for two reasons. On the one hand, the earthquake of 2012 severely damaged the old offices, forcing employees to work in containers for a long time; on the other hand, the positive trend of the company made it necessary to enlarge their premises and invest significantly in technological innovation. For this purpose, Sarchio turned to the Tecno Pack group, the Italian leader in the supply of packaging technologies, for the implementation of various automated end-of-line systems. Moreover, the ethical commitment of the Carpi-based company towards the environment has led them to set a target for 2020: reducing to a minimum the environmental impact of their packaging materials,

using more sustainable and 100% recyclable packaging. The partnership with Tecno Pack was born to create recyclable packaging made of paper. Since 2012 the collaboration with Tecno Pack has put Sarchio in the technical conditions to produce and package all food products automatically.
Careful study, customised systems and widespread assistance are transformed into guarantees for Sarchio consumers, who always find a natural product, perfectly preserved and intact. Sarchio and Tecno Pack – two winning excellences.
Since their first meeting, Sarchio explained to Andrea Motta, Tecno Pack Area Manager, the urge to find a reliable partner, who could assess and implement Sarchio’s projects in every detail, following the company’s growth and evolution step by step. The goal has been fully achieved to date, as demonstrated by the new packaging that guarantees freshness, traceability, sustainability and protection of the product.

oyochem Co., Ltd., a member company of the Toyo Ink Group, has developed a new pressuresensitive adhesive (PSA) with a high bio-based content for use in packaging, labels and tapes. The bio-based content for the company’s Cyabine™ series of polyurethane adhesives recorded values up to 80%, while the Oribain™ series for acrylic adhesives up to 75%. Both series also include a removable PSA composition with 10% bio-based content, a feat that had been considered difficult to accomplish by using conventional bio-based adhesives. As countries around the globe work to transition to a circular economy, materials produced from biomass are expected to play a key role. Given the tremendous focus on mitigating climate change and its impact, urgent research and investment is being devoted to moving away from today’s petroleum-based economy to a more sustainable one based on recycling and renewable resources. As such, bio-based materials are attracting increasing attention across a diverse range of fields, due to the ecological advantages that come with their use.
toyoinkgroup conte nostri pack inter 2-20.indd 3
In response to these trends, Toyochem has recently developed an advanced pressure-sensitive adhesive composition with biomass content up to 80%. Building on its 2018 release of the industry’s first adhesives with 20% bio-based content, Toyochem is pleased to launch another adhesive innovation with a substantially higher content level. Researchers in Japan achieved this breakthrough by synthesizing the polymer from raw materials derived from biomass. As a result, the new adhesive gives packaging converters who are looking to incorporate biomass into their packaging structures a more eco-friendly alternative without compromising on performance. The new Cyabine and Oribain adhesives announced today are currently available in Japan with a worldwide release to follow in the next few years. With its ever-growing portfolios of biodegradable, bio-based, ultra-high solids and waterbased adhesive products, Toyochem will continually work to create innovative solutions that help reduce the environmental load on society. www.toyo-chem.com/en/

GENTILI: THE UNILATERAL DECISION MADE BY INTERPACK IS UNACCEPTABLE The Italian Packaging Machinery Manufacturers’ Association believes it is inconceivable to hold the fair from 25 February to 3 March 2021 46

fter months of attempting to dialogue with the organisers of Interpack, up until now the world’s most important exhibition of packaging technologies, the Italian companies represented by Ucima recently received a communication from the event’s organiser Messe Düsseldorf confirming them that the show is scheduled to take place from 25 February to 3 March 2021.
YOUR PACKAGING INSIDER
Originally due to be held from 7 to 13 May 2020, the fair was unilaterally moved by the organisers to the end of February 2021. The appeals made in recent months by the Italian trade association Ucima, by other Italian and international associations and by the companies themselves asking the organisers to move the exhibition to another date were to no avail. “We acted in the interests of Italian companies by exercising our role as a business association, but our requests fell unattended,” says Ucima’s Chairman Matteo Gentili.
UCIMA-conte nostri pack inter 2-20.indd 3
“Given the resurgence of Coronavirus infections and the consequent measures adopted by governments across Europe and other continents, we consider it inconceivable to organise an exhibition like Interpack in just a few months’ time,” continues Gentili. “An international exhibition like Interpack requires very substantial investments, not just in economic terms but also in R&D and marketing activities,” adds Luciano Sottile, member of UCIMA’s Board of Directors in charge for promotional activities. “For this reason we believe it is impossible to ensure an adequate return on the investment if the presence of a sufficient number of high-quality visitors cannot be guaranteed.” “We feel the decision taken by the organisers is unacceptable because it takes no account whatsoever of the wishes of companies and of our industry as a whole. We really hope that the organisers may reconsider their decision,” concludes Gentili. www.ucima.it

COST-EFFICIENT AND SUSTAINABLE: Syntegon Technology and SABIC launch joint packaging concept for frozen food packaging

of LDPE. Driven by their mission to deliver sustainability without compromise, Syntegon joined forces with SABIC to find an alternative to LDPE films. The answer lies in the newly developed BOPE film from SABIC and the innovative PHS 2.0 sealing system from Syntegon for vertical form, fill and seal machines. “Our concept enables the use of thinner films at higher speeds, whilst offering the same sealing quality and product protection as with LDPE, Pierre Hamelink, director business, market and sustainability strategy at Syntegon in Weert, Netherlands, explains. By switching to BOPE, manufacturers can reduce film thickness to 20 micrometers. This thin gauge offers a potential packaging material reduction of 35 to 50 percent

yntegon Technology and SABIC, a global leader in diversified chemicals, have developed a sustainable packaging concept for the frozen food industry with a substantial material reduction potential. Their solution comprises the new PHS 2.0 sealing technology from Syntegon and the 20-micrometer thin biaxially oriented polyethylene (BOPE) film from SABIC. Brand owners can now substantially reduce material consumption and increase their output rates by replacing conventionally used low density polyethylene (LDPE) films with BOPE sealed on PHS 2.0 equipment. Throughout the frozen food sector, pillow bags are the pack style of choice, with the majority currently made

from the editor compared to blown PE films such as LDPE, and a cost saving potential of up to 30 percent. A winning combo: 25 percent speed increase and 50 percent downgauging Tests run on Syntegon machines show that the new material outperforms or performs just as well as conventional polyolefin monomaterial films. Its main benefit: Substantial downgauging compared to LDPE films. Depending on product and machinery specifics, LDPE films typically range from 30 to 80 micrometers in thickness. The BOPE solution from SABIC is a monolayer film structure of only 20 micrometer thickness that offers the same level of puncture resistance and barrier protection as 30 micrometer LDPE films. This PHS 2.0 sealing system includes servo-driven sealing jaws, an active knife and two-sided heated sealing strips for more consistent, high-quality seals. The new sealing technology stands out for its material efficiency and speed: it reduces the required clamped film surface by up to 6.8 percent and increases the packaging speed by as much as 25 percent – up to 130 bags per minute. The increase in speed is achieved by reducing the sealing and cooling times by 50 and 30 percent, respectively.
YOUR PACKAGING INSIDER
• Increased output of up to 130 bags per minute with Syntegon’s PHS 2.0 sealing system • 20 micrometer thin BOPE film from SABIC • Mechanically and chemically recyclable film What is more, manufacturers can maximize their film yield per roll and reduce film roll changes. This helps to reduce costs, save time and optimize storage space. The new packaging concept for frozen food not only offers material savings and output gains: The BOPE film from SABIC is fully recycable via mechanical and chemical PE recycling streams. Chemically recycled post-consumer plastics are safe for food packaging applications and can undergo multiple recycling loops without a loss of quality, thus bringing the packaging industry one step closer to a circular economy. Collaboration between equipment provider and material supplier The new sustainable packaging concept demonstrates the value of cooperation between stakeholders throughout the supply chain. “As a system solution provider, we know that sustainability cannot be achieved single-handedly,” Hamelink explains. “In order to test machine performance with sustainable materials, we partner with stakeholders very early on in the development process. When it comes to sustainability, we make sure brand owners don’t have to compromise on speed and quality.” True to their mission to offer sustainable solutions for everyone, Syntegon’s VFFS testing center helps brand owners to find the right packaging material and technology for their product. Syntegon Technology’s portfolio ranges from primary and secondary packaging to transport packaging, as well as customer services, such as preventive maintenance and spare parts management. To find out more about sustainable packaging solutions for the frozen food sector, please check out Syntegon Technology’s new whitepaper on hygiene in frozen food packaging.

TRANSPARENT PORK LABELLING SYSTEMS by Chiara Natalucci
I 56
n July the Interministerial Decree on transparent pork labelling systems promoted by Coldiretti was signed by the Ministers of Agriculture, Economic Development and Health. It requires the mandatory indication of origin in the labelling of processed pork. According to this decree, the wording “100% Italian” can be used only when the meat comes from pigs born, raised, slaughtered, and processed in Italy.

The Lifeanalytics Group, an Italian company specialising in chemical, microbiological and organic analysis services for over 40 years, has welcomed the news with enthusiasm. The Group’s technicians work in 23 highly specialised laboratories throughout Italy and support companies in the product certification process, with a comprehensive vision on the entire supply chain. Besides performing microbiological analyses on food products, they also inform companies about the regulations on food product labelling, assessing their compliance with the origin of raw materials, and verifying nutritional values and the correct disposal of packaging. The final consumer will receive transparent information and easy to read labels, in compliance with the regulations. “We are very much pleased - says Giovanni Giusto, Managing Director and CEO of Lifeanalytics - that both the breeders and companies in the Italian meat industry have finally

The series “LIGHTNINGCURE® LC-L5G” has been on market since few years, it offers many solutions for several printing applications; GP (pinning) and GJ (curing) series are designed for digital printing, while GL series is designed mainly for analog printing.
The GC-113 series is optimized for pinning and it achieves optimal irradiance for this application (10 W/cm2) with air cooling. This series features a very high accuracy of the emitted irradiance.
Recently the new L15346 series is in release: this source is optimized for pinning and it achieves high irradiance

chines design, several wavelengths are available (365, 385 and 395 nm). The new “side-on” type GC-77S series is capable of irradiating light in the direction perpendicular to its installation surface, this allows easy integration even in very tight locations. For this series 365, 385, 395 and 405 nm wavelengths are available. Thanks to the special design of the emitting area, all Hamamatsu UV-LED lamps can be connected in order to fit any printing width. In order to fulfill market needs Hamamatsu is committed to continuous technological innovation, several new light sources are under development and will be released during the next months to achieve many advantages for printing applications. - Mixed wavelength series: high irradiance UV-LED lamps which irradiate different wavelengths at the same time (365/385/395nm). This characteristic allows more flexibility in the ink choice and this can lead to price reduction and improvement in printing quality. - High irradiance water cooling series: very compact design and extremely high emitted intensity, designed for high performances offset and flexo printing. We will also develop a new high stability type for high precision printing processes. - “Forced-air” cooling UV-LED lamps: since the air flows through a duct, the lamp doesn’t need any fans and very compact design and high irradiance

are possible. The lamp does not generate neither dust nor air flows, moreover “forced-air” cooling prevents overheating because the air used for cooling is not taken from the environment surrounding the lamp, making it possible to integrate the lamp in tight places. - Collimated UV-LED lamp: irradiance level is stable over a long range of working distances, this lamp is suitable in particular to treat not-uniform surfaces or with embossed texture and for those applications where the substrate is not stable and a long working distance is necessary. hen goals are combined, results are achieved faster and more effectively than the others. Here lies the secret of an authentic collaboration that focuses entirely on the common and important benefits and achievements to be reaped. This is the story conveyed by P. E. Labellers and Spumador, two companies that have made the history of Mineral Waters and beverage, and continue today to lead the international markets with strength and vision. To begin with, not only these mineral waters, but also their bottling and sale on the market have continued for over 100 years: Recoaro, a Spumador brand that is synonymous with guarantee, is widely spread and appreciated by thousands of customers all over the world. Incepted in 1927, the company was acquired in 2016 by the historic Spumador, which has been on the market since 1888 and presents a milestone in Italian beverage worldwide. Spumador and Recoaro are part of the Refresco group, which is the largest company on a global level in the third-party production of soft drinks, fruit juices and mineral waters.
A partnership was sealed 40 years ago, and enhanced with collaborative and continuous innovation. P.E. Labellers & Spumador – Refresco group, tell a success story
Today Refresco is positioned as the world’s largest independent bottler, with 60 factories in Europe and North America. Spumador alone has 5 plants in Italy including that of Recoaro Terme, and produces 1.3 billion bottles a year with 24 lines. The bottled products range from carbonated and “still” drinks to mineral waters and from juices and soft drinks to alcoholic drinks. It is a very wide offer in multiple formats, such as disposable and returnable glass, aseptic and standard PET, and bricks and cans, with a distribution system that embraces large-scale distribution, the Horeca channel and discount stores. Recoaro mineral water represents a treasure of Italy that springs within the heart of the Small Dolomites in a protected area deeply linked to 64

its territory of origin. It is a product to be enhanced not only in substance, but also in shape, with bottles of various sizes and materials, to be “confectioned” in the best possible way. Then the meeting came about with P.E. Labellers, a historic Italian company active for almost 50 years in the production of automatic labeling machines, and recognized for its innovative drive and modular philosophy in conceiving its offer solutions. Spumador and PE Labellers: history of a partnership “The partnership story with PE has lasted for more than 40 years – explains Tullio Tiozzo, the company’s Manufacturing Director. The collaboration was born in the 1980s, when we felt the need to rely on a flexible and innovative supplier that could guarantee excellent aftersales service. This made the difference in the choice compared to other labeling companies. I have known 66

Bruno Negri since then, and today I can say that our companies have had a very similar development, targeting more on innovation which the markets demand year after year. This way of doing business has rewarded both our companies, making them today a point of reference in their sectors.” This relationship has evolved over time, with respect and mutual knowledge.
“We are proud to play an important role in the Recoaro production chain, confirms Bruno Negri, Senior VP of PE Labellers. For us, listening to customer needs and meeting every production requirement have proven to be the most successful factors over the years. “Even before being a winning business strategy, it’s the PE philosophy, our DNA.” PE develops and produces smart Innovation design solutions, which sat-

isfy different production needs. We created the rotary labeling machines combined with independent selfadhesive stations, cold glue for fiscal and guarantee seals, linear sleeve models with thermo-retraction tunnels, special optional solutions such as optical orientation systems, label presence control, and correct position verification of the labels applied. Machines are designed in ergonomic solutions, strongly oriented toward energy saving as requested by many different sectors, from beverage to food & dairy, and from personal & home care to the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Demands of the past and present: what is behind the choice of a product In the Recoaro factory’s two-year period 2019-2020, two PE machines were installed on the two PET lines with excellent results that were seen immediately. The new demands were expressed and satisfied. But how have the needs of the company changed over time? “With respect to the past, today we serve more flexible machines and with fast format changeovers, given that the market requires continued developments both in the shapes of the bottles as in the labels, which should have increasingly greater impact on the eyes of consumers, says Tiozzo. Modular machines are the correct answer to current needs.” The standards of the mineral water market and the beverage market in general, have become highly demanding today with regard to packaging methods. This trend is largely manifested precisely in the PET industry, which requires increasingly lighter bottles, with R-PET and new formats that are both ergonomic and with a strong appeal and image. This trend can also
PACKAGING INTER 2-20 - PE LABELLERS.indd 6
be found in other materials: for example glass, which is making a great comeback and calls for new formats and attractive labels. The challenge to face and the solution to meet it An important and articulated reality like Recoaro is called to face equally complex critical issues. “Today, in order to meet the challenges posed by an increasingly competitive market, we must continue to invest in new technologies - continues Tiozzo, to enable the raising of the standards of productivity and reduce production costs. It is very important that the costs of maintenance of the machines installed are increasingly limited, and consequently, the most far-sighted choices will select partners that meet these needs.” The company recently installed a new P.E. machine on the PET mineral water line, with the primary objective of replacing paper labels with plastic ones and increasing the overall efficiency of the line. “The requirements requested were clear, challenging and satisfied at best - said Negri. The machine had to be made with market components, proposed format changes interchangeable with the other two installed on an equal number of production lines, and the guarantee of a low annual maintenance cost. We understood the production needs of Recoaro: the customer’s challenge has become ours, and we have achieved joint success.” The results expected and new goals to reach In Recoaro, business travels at high speed and safely. The new machine installed should produce 30,000 Bt/h in OPP with 4 different formats, relying on the care that P.E. pays to every step, assembly and installation, and testing and maintenance on all the formats. The objectives to be achieved are ambitious and manifold: to increase the
productivity and flexibility of the line, replace the paper label with plastic and, in the medium to long term, increase efficiency with a decrease in maintenance costs. Recoaro’s Next Step: what to expect from the future and how to equip yourself to move in advance “The macroeconomic dimension that is outlined for the future inevitably suffers from the negative effects brought by Covid-19 - says Tiozzo. The scenario that we can foresee sees the concentration of the number of players in all sectors, due to a takeover policy implemented by large groups. Only those who will be quick in innovating and interpreting the increasingly sudden changes expressed by the market will overcome the complex challenge that lies ahead.” Recoaro chooses to set up strong and rewarding actions to consolidate its market share and acquire new ones. First, it will be through an increasingly strong return to customer-oriented business in all senses, focused not only on bottling but also extended to all the related services. High priority for concrete sustainability and quality of what is produced and distributed will be the point on which the company will make no compromises, and will continue to invest in. Refresco Italia is anticipating and aiming for new markets to conquer, such as that of co-packing in the hard seltzer alcohol sector, and planning future investments to the benefit of current customers. New horizons will be addressed with the support of historical partners. P.E. will be called to new challenges, competing as always in the company’s projects, in the proposal of innovative and performing labeling solutions. History will be the witness. www.pelabellers.com

BTB PET RECYCLING FURTHER INCREASES CAPACITIES
D
uring the Corona Lockdown in spring 2020 German PET recycler BTB PET-Recycling GmbH & Co. KG installed a new preheating unit and another SSP reactor supplied by Starlinger recycling technology. The PET bottle-to-bottle recycling company based in Bad Salzuflen, North Rhine- Westphalia, is now operating 9 SSP (Solid State Polycondensation) reactors from Starlinger recycling technology. BTB has been using the foodgrade technology developed by the Austrian specialist for plastics recycling since 2007. Each year, BTB processes approximately 20,000 tons of PET input material from the German bottle return system on a Starlinger recoSTAR PET 165 iV+ recycling line installed prior to the SSP reactors. Andrzej Zajontz, one of BTB’s General Managers and in charge of all technical matters, explains why this is not as easy as it used to be: “Unfortunately, the beverage containers collected through the German container deposit system are not as well separated as before – in the reverse vending machines both clear and coloured bottles are collected together, and that is how they are delivered. In addition, the input material contains other plastics as well as aluminium and tinplates. This creates a lot of extra work for us in pre-sorting as we use only clear PET bottles for our bottle-to-bottle process. Due to this, our most recent investments went – besides into said Starlinger machines – into improved sorting technology. We separate the input material at the beginning of the treatment process and then sort the PET flakes again before extrusion to achieve best pellet quality.” In 2018 BTB received another positive EFSA Opinion on the “Direct iV+” process for producing food-grade recycled PET. With this process the company was able to increase its production output and operates even more efficiently and with higher energy savings. Not only regarding product quality, but also in terms of circular economy the German PET recycler acts as a role model: BTB caters to regular customers who use the recycled PET for producing beverage bottles which are filled, sold and after usage collected in the region. From this input material BTB then again produces PET regranulate – a perfect example for the sustainability of a regional closed packaging loop. Andrzej Zajontz is very positive about the cooperation with Starlinger: “Their service is always top-

ANALYSIS FOR SARS-COV-2 DETERMINATION
I
In January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that Chinese health authorities have identified a new strain of coronavirus, never previously identified in humans. Later, it was officially nominated like SARS-CoV-2; the respiratory disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 was called COVID-19. Between January and February, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) identified the first imported and native cases of COVID-19 infection in Italy. In the global emergency that afflicts world, our laboratory performed different services in order to control and evaluate COVID-19 infection. Tests available in our laboratory relating to SARSCoV-2 virus are performed both on humans and on surfaces. Tests performed on human. • Qualitative serological tests They investigate, qualitatively, the antibody response that a subject has developed, or not, towards SARS-CoV-2 virus, releasing a negative / positive response for IgM and IgG immunoglobulins. The sample is collected through a capillary blood sample, using a lancing device.
82
• Immunocromatograph rapid swabs They investigate the presence of antigens related to SARS-CoV-2 virus, collected on a nasopharyngeal swab. The principle of the analytical technique is immunochromatography, which allows to obtain a negative / positive response in relation to the absence / presence of viral proteins. Compared to swabs that are analyzed with the molecular method, “rapid” swabs have shorter response times and, another advantage, is linked to the simplicity of performing analysis.
Tests performed on surfaces. The main vehicle of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is represented by bioaerosol, identified as the biological particulate dispersed in the environment and in the air.
• Molecular assay. Through the Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) technique, they allow to investigate the presence of viral RNA on a sample, consisting of a nasopharyngeal swab. Equipped with high sensitivity and specificity, RT-PCR is con-

The types of surfaces to be tested and the number of pads to characterize a surface is determined on client’s needs. A sterile swab is used to perform the sample, which will be passed over the surface to be tested by applying light pressure. During collection, swab is rotated clockwise and counterclockwise, in four different directions (horizontal, vertical, oblique from right to left and oblique from left to right).
The sampled surface, where possible, must be 25 cm2, equal to a square of 5 cm per side. In the case of surfaces with an unmeasurable size (such as a door handle), the entire surface is sampled. After sampling, the swab is closed, taking care not to contaminate it with surfaces outside the analysis. www.farmacalab.com

HISPACK MOVES TO OCTOBER 2021 TO INCREASE THE ATTENDANCE AND INTERNATIONAL REACH
H
ispack, the most important packaging, process and logistics event in Spain and one of the main trade shows in Europe in its speciality, has been rescheduled from spring to autumn 2021 (from 19th to 22nd October). The new dates, agreed with representatives of companies and associations, are in line with the schedule of major European events in the packaging industry, changed due to the pandemic. Thus, Hispack aims to hold the best possible event next year in order to boost commercial activity and exports of the packaging industry in a context that is expected to be more favourable and that guarantees a wide participation and the attendance of international companies and professionals. Hispack will coincide once again at the same venue with Alimentaria FoodTech, the equipment, technology and ingredients exhibition. The decision, adopted by Fira de Barcelona means that Hispack 2021 will be held five months later than initially planned in order to place the Spanish fair into the new schedule of major European packaging industry events that have been postponed as a result of Covid-19 so as to meet the interests of the sector. According to the director of Hispack, Xavier Pascual ,in this scenario we gain more time to organise a great fair, which will represent the power of the sector, at a time when the economic recovery is more consolidated, with more commercial opportunities for our exhibitors and visitors, and with better expectations in terms of international participation and visiting buyers from foreign markets. In this regard, Hispack continues working with the aim of bringing together the entire packaging ecosystem in

Spain and contributing to the acceleration of innovation and sustainability in the packaging field as the two main factors which will drive sector growth. During the health crisis, packaging has proved to be an essential industry for the manufacture, distribution and sale of all sorts of products with maximum safety guarantees, and in the post-covid period it will be strategic in helping other sectors to innovate, create economic value and relaunch their activities. At the same time, the technology exhibition Alimentaria FoodTech, which has agreed with companies and organisations in the sector to postpone the show until 2021, will coincide with Hispack, taking advantage of synergies to attract companies and professionals from the food and beverage industry (the main user sector of

companies in 2021, specialities closely linked to packaging. Thus, the fair will be sectioned in a new way to improve the visitor’s experience and facilitate the attendance of new professional profiles who use machinery, technology and packaging elements in their activity. The commercial offer will be sectioned into the following areas: Packaging Machinery & Process, Brand Packaging, Industrial Packaging, Labelling & Bottling, Logistics, Automation & Robotics. For Hispack, internationalisation will also be one of the core strategies used as a way to increase the exhibition offer which, in turn, should provide a significant increase in visits from customers from other countries. To this end, it will strengthen its guest buyer programme to attract professionals to the fair from regions of interest for Spanish exports. At the same time, meetings, gatherings and virtual activities will be added that will expand the scope, audience and business opportunities abroad through digitalisation. containers and packaging), who will thus find a wide range of products for the various phases of the food product value chain. The rest of the industrial and consumer sectors, suppliers, brands, as well as commerce and distribution will also continue to find in customised packaging, process and logistics solutions in Hispack’s offer. In fact, half of the visitors to Hispack come from non-food industries, mainly pharmacy, perfumery and cosmetics, chemicals, industrial goods and the automotive industry, among others. The other half of the attendees at Hispack are from the food and beverage industry. New sectors and more internationality Hispack is also committed to increasing the presence of materials, processing machinery, automation and logistic
hispack PACKAGING INTERNA.indd 5
In the run up to the event, Hispack will continue to energise the packaging ecosystem and collaborate with the sector’s entities in activities and initiatives which help companies and professionals to adapt to the challenges that have arisen as a result of the pandemic and to identify trends and innovations in packaging, process and logistics which promote the growth of this industry. With almost a year and a half to go, Hispack is already ensured more than 200 exhibitors who have placed their trust in the event and have confirmed their participation, reserving more than 15,000 m2 of net surface area at the Gran Via venue. At its last event held in 2018, this major Spanish packaging fair brought together 823 exhibitors, 25% of them being international, and 1,400 represented brands, and occupied 40,000 m2.

MULLER & KOSTER: ESSENCES, AROMAS FOR COSMETICS, ESSENTIAL OILS AND NATURAL FRAGRANCES
75
years ago, MULLER & KOSTER S.P.A. began an exciting journey. The company that brought improvement to perfumery in Italy was founded actually in 1945. From then on, and for each 75 years of history, MULLER & KOSTER S.P.A. has undergone a profound transformation, demonstrating a constant ability to reinvent itself. This path, full of challenges, has made MULLER & KOSTER S.P.A. what it is today. The only 100% familyrun Italian essence company that designs, develops and produces essences, aromas for cosmetics, essential oils and natural fragrances in Italy. A solid company with offices in Italy and France. A company that grows and continues to offer the best solutions to make people’s lives more fragrant. MULLER & KOSTER S.P.A. opened the doors of the Milan plant in 1945 with a production of essences for soaps and bubble baths and, after 40 years of producing iconic fragrances for the history of the brand, the company has decided to build a new, larger and more modern production site , thus moving production from Milan to Liscate in 2008. The plant was inaugurated with the launch of the largest automatic robot for the production of fragrances in Europe, Roxane Gt which weighs automatically 365 raw materials with an outstanding precision. Today, the essence house boasts three production robots: Roxane Gt, Roxane A and an automatic system for essential oils from which 50,000 products per month are produced including essences, aromas for cosmetics, natural fragrances and essential oils. MULLER & KOSTER S.P.A. moreover designs its fragrances in the research and development laboratories of Grasse in France with the most developed tools available to its perfumery technicians., nowadays MULLER & KOSTER S.P.A. has produced over 35,000 new fragrances. In these 75 years, Muller & Koster S.p.A. has launched on the market 35,000 fragrances, 140 essential oils, and a wide range of aromas for cosmetics, in different versions and allergenic profiles. It should also be noted that, starting from 2019, the brand’s range has experienced an important leap forward with the entry into the natural fragrance segment with a list of over 300 100% natural fragrances certifiable Natrue and Cosmos. ernization of fragrances has been a constant throughout the journey, and to this has been added a technological development that has shaped every aspect of the essences, from the technical aspects to compliance with mandatory regulations up to the elimination of allergens. Furthermore, as part of the commitment of MULLER & KOSTER S.P.A. for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly production, the house is committed to a strong reduction in electricity consumption and natural resources Much more than a fragrance manufacturer, a technological perfume company If MULLER & KOSTER S.P.A. was born with the aim of perfuming Italy, in recent years the House has made giant steps with the aim of converting into a service provider and going beyond the production of essences, with the aim of responding to one of the major trends of the future: the collaborative, shared and sustainable economy. In this sense, in 2019 MULLER & KOSTER S.P.A. has started a careful scouting of current trends and communicating to its customers the news of the sector in order to enhance the marketing services of customers at no cost. At the same time, it intends to strengthen business models linked to the new concepts of natural fragrance, absence of allergens, sustainable products, with particular focus on Cosmos and Natrue certifications. 88
For 75 years, MULLER & KOSTER S.P.A. it is present in people’s lives and has kept us in showing its commitment to society and its needs in a complex moment such as that caused by COVID-19. In this period, in MULLER & KOSTER S.P.A. various initiatives have been carried out to combat the spread of the virus. Initiatives aimed, in practice, at the creation of blends of essential oils with proven sanitizing properties required by all manufacturers of sanitizing products. A team of perfumery technicians worked for weeks on the development of sanitizing mixtures for ever, environment and fabrics. As a result, over 600 kilos of sanitizing mixtures were produced and sent to the sanitizing companies. A grain of sand to give hope for the future. Gradually regaining freedom. www.mullerkoster.com

column Closed-loop: the Aliplast “recipe” for reusing plastic packaging
A
circular system that allows for the introduction of plastic materials in the recycling cycle, reducing costs and impact on the environment. Its name is “closed-loop” and it has been developed by Aliplast, a Gruppo Hera company and European leader in the production of flexible PE films, PET sheets and regenerated polymers. The closed-loop system can be leveraged by companies in industries such as packaging (for food and beverage) and ceramics Cutting costs while giving new life to plastic waste There are two main benefits of the recycling economics achieved by Aliplast, a Gruppo Hera company and European leader in the production of flexible PE films, PET sheets and regenerated polymers. The first, more immediate one, is about the ecosystem. The adoption of the circular model offered by the company leads to an indefinite extension of the lifespan of plastics, promoting its recovery and limiting its release into the environment. This leads to a considerable reduction of the potential pollution caused by this material, whose perception is also transformed, from problem to resource. The second benefit is of an economic nature and results from the adoption of a closed-loop process. Taking advantage of a closed-loop system allows to get the most of your plastic waste, while also guaranteeing the continuous availability of quality-controlled material.
YOUR PACKAGING INSIDER
to separate them and reduce their volume is located by Aliplast. The next stage involves transport to one of Aliplast’s processing centers (the company has several facilities in Italy and branches in France, Spain, and Poland). Here the material is selected, ground and regenerated. The finished product that comes out of the process is a material comparable to virgin plastic in terms of quality and that can then be processed to obtain flexible PE films or can be kept in granules in order to be converted at a later date, as necessary. Aliplast offers a turnkey service, taking care of the whole waste material processing cycle: from the collection of the disposed product at the customer company center to the delivery of regenerated material. When flexibility rhymes with quality: the example of the ceramic district The closed-loop processes designed by Aliplast boast great flexibility, to the point of meeting not only the needs of a single company, but of a whole industrial district. An example is that of the Modena ceramic supply-chain. For product types and quality, this is a unique area in the world, with a high number of contractors who cover different process, such as the tile decoration stages. During the different phases of production, ceramic products are enclosed in inner and outer packaging, stored, and brought to the sub-contractors, where they are unpacked and, once treated, packed once again. This procedure leads to the production of high quantities of waste films that are recovered and processed by Aliplast in the region, and they are then handled by the Treviso plant. The resulting films are returned to the supply chain and used again for the inner and outer packaging of ceramics.
Closed-loop’s virtuous circle Designed for the treatment of special waste, that is, waste produced by companies, the closed-loop system is a vertical process for the recovery and recycling of plastics which consists of several stages.
The benefit of working with Herambiente The closed-loop project fits perfectly with the offering aimed at companies from Herambiente - a Gruppo Hera company and the first national provider of waste treatment - and widens the portfolio of “green” solutions the company offers. ondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has joined forces with AIM, the European Brands Association, and other partners across the value chain to prove the viability of digital watermarking for sorting waste at scale. The HolyGrail 2.0 initiative has the ambitious goal of assessing whether this pioneering digital technology can enable better sorting and higher-quality recycling rates for packaging in the EU, thereby driving a truly circular economy. Mondi was a founding member of the original Pioneer Project HolyGrail, facilitated by the Ellen MacArthur foundation. Now over 85 partners across the value chain are working together to refine and commercialise this concept, with Mondi continuing its active role in trialling the innovative technology. column watermarks on packaging—which are not visible to the naked eye—make it possible to effectively sort the material into specific waste streams. Conventional sensor technologies (e.g. near infrared spectroscopy) are not able to reliably identify multi-material packaging, so they can end up as contaminants when recycling mono-materials. With this new technology, it becomes possible to separate materials more accurately and generate new waste streams, which then can be recycled with enhanced recycling technologies. These digital watermarks also provide other opportunities. For example, consumers can use a smartphone app to find details about the packaging and how to recycle it, and brand owners can add product details as well. Mondi has played an important role in this project since the beginning. Graeme Smith, Head of Product Sustainability for Flexible Packaging and Engineered Materials, explained: “As members of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy, we were part of the initial team to bring the Pioneer Project, HolyGrail, to life. At Mondi, we believe packaging should be sustainable by design and we see the need to improve the sorting and separation of packaging waste as part of a circular economy. Digital watermarks have the potential to make this a reality. Improved recycling will increase the value of packaging waste, driving higher collection rates and making it a valuable commercial resource for the future.” As HolyGrail 2.0 progresses, Mondi is well positioned to contribute to its success by validating digital watermarks with partners along the value chain. Mondi will be conducting full-scale industrial trials with key customers in the near future. www.mondigroup.com

SPRINT24 FOR FOOD
T
hanks to the constant update and innovation of its products, Sprint24 has managed to expand its market. Not only it creates traditional letterpress products, but it also specializes in food-related ones, ranging from self-assembly boxes to printed placemats as well as a wide range of stickers and labels made using different materials, shapes and sizes. Boxes and cases The main reason why cases were added to our catalogue is that a high-quality product cannot help but have a packaging adding value to it. The format can be completely tailored to the unique needs of all our clients so as to offer any kind of package whatsoever: that is, for example, small boxes for preserves as well as cases for bottles of wine, oil and so on. For the most basic boxes, multicolour printing is used and elements such as logos, technical and food specifications as well as graphic patterns are added. However, for the most demanding companies dealing with sophisticate customers, refinements are a musthave. As a matter of fact, different lamination, UV glossy details – even thick ones – and hot foil printing in gold and silver give each and every box a unique and exclusive look. Stickers and labels Stickers and labels are equally distinguishing and important features. Since they can be used in several different ways and can have endless different features, they can give added value to and decorate your products’ packaging and boxes. The clear dividing line between stickers is indeed the choice of materials: if, on the one side, there is PVC, which provides excellent durability and colour rendering, on the other side there is paper, which is very functional and whose advantage is that you can write on it at a lower cost. Which one should you choose then? If you wish to label your products, PVC is definitely the best choice. Since it lasts longer, it is perfect for food packaging because it is waterproof and greaseproof; it can literally stay intact in any kind of situation. Labels are also available in white or
100
transparent PVC, if you wish to give emphasis to the product contained in the package. “For my company I need custom size labels!”. Well, not only can the size be completely tailored, but also the shape, so that labels can perfectly fit your bottles or other products. Stickers and labels made of PVC are provided in different cuts: that is, multiple kiss-cut stickers, so that you can have sheets containing several stickers that can be unstuck whenever you need them; single kiss-cut stickers, that is pre-cut stickers with edges making it easier to unstick them; and die-cut stickers, that is we cut exactly the shape you send to us. Paper stickers are a perfect match if you wish to seal packages and cases and can be used as a kind of trademark for your company. In this case, as well, size can be tailored according to your needs, so that such stickers can be used on boxes as well as big products. However, you can only choose from three different papers: glossy paper with Satin finish to provide an elegant look, uncoated paper for a more natural

look and Synaps polyester paper, which is particularly durable due to that fact that is tear-proof. Warranty seals Last but not least, we can provide you with ultra destructible stickers, that is warranty seals. Once they are stuck, these stickers will break into tiny pieces if anyone tries to remove them. What are they used for? They are tamper-evident or anti-tamper security seals which can be used to seal jars, bottles and all those foodstuffs that need to be protected. The smallest size is 1x1 cm, so even very small packages are not going to be covered too much by warranty seals. For this product, only multiple kiss-cut stickers (i.e. sheets) are available. If you need further information about the products for foodstuffs and more, our technical support will be happy to help. Moreover, our graphic designers will be ready to support you in case you have any technical issues or if you encounter any problem in creating the files we will be working on. In this way, you will be able to give your products the added value they deserve. You can find our stickers on sprint24.net/adhesives and our cases on sprint24. net/cases. T
he latest machine from Sitma is called Fast Pack. A high-performing and flexible solution for e-commerce businesses, it’s the product of our company’s fifty years of experience in the packaging industry, as well as our expertise in logistics. These two strengths have led not only to Fast Pack’s development, but to an entire portfolio of e-commerce applications for packaging a wide range of goods: from industries like cosmetics and personal care, to clothing, electronics, books, music and media. Quick and flexible, for constantly changing needs Fast Pack adopts the same characteristics that have made Sitma a brand leader in machine and system design for the logistics industry.
material is optimized, reducing the amount of product that then has to be disposed of by the end user, and on the other hand, it facilitates transport in later phases of the supply chain, limiting “empty transport journeys” as much as possible and optimizing the load of transport vehicles in order to sensibly reduce their carbon footprint. The new frontier of traceability Another added value for the line is the option to include an innovative family of accessory units for man-
This includes first, its flexibility, meaning it can consecutively prepare packages of various shapes and sizes while working at different speeds, reaching up to 3,500 packages per hour. The machine concept is modular and can be programmed to best suit the line’s layout and the client’s production needs. Fast Pack also handles varying shapes and sizes, measuring the product beforehand to create customized packages. These characteristics make it the ideal solution for fulfillment in the growthheavy e-commerce industry, where package form and dimensions often vary widely. Sustainability drives us Like all machines and systems in the Sitma line-up, Fast Pack is the product of a design philosophy devoted to sustainability. It allows for use of innovative materials with a reduced environmental impact in place of traditional plastic films for packaging, such as paper (from 60 gsm to 150 gsm) or different types of biofilm. The ability to create tailor-made packages also guarantees two advantages: on the one hand, the packaging

Sitma has implemented a hardware and software system that allows information tracking when managing e-commerce orders throughout the entire distribution chain, ensuring it is unique and interconnected. Track and trace the Sitma way: how it works In the preliminary phases, product data is collected and then analyzed, linked and further enhanced. Each product, which includes the package and its content, is assigned a distinct ID number, which is then tracked and traced throughout the whole process. The technology Sitma uses is engineered to be perfectly integrated with the client’s WCS and databases, thereby enhancing the already existing information by adding the possibility to carry out a further data control. this ensures greater effectiveness and minimizes the possibility of errors, waste and reworkings. A family of systems suited to every need in the ecommerce industry This offer perfectly satisfies the needs of Industry 4.0, which doesn’t stop at the packaging phase. The endof-line proposal is also highly flexible and automated. It can include integration with weighing and labelling systems, or installation of digital in-line printers for printing transportation information or other details directly on the package. As for the packaging phase, in addition to Fast Pack, Sitma’s line-up of solutions dedicated to e-commerce includes: Quick Pack, Thick Pack and e-Wrap. Whatever the type of product or package, Sitma offers the best solution, customized to meet the needs of each individual client. KM PACKAGING LAUNCHES MONO MATERIAL POLYPROPYLENE LIDDING FILMS
G
lobal flexible packaging and lidding films supplier KM Packaging has launched a new range of mono-polymer material lidding films, made from polypropylene (PP), that is designed for recyclability. The sustainable films seal and peel to PP and PE-lined PP trays and can be used during microwave cooking as well as being suitable for ambient, chilled, or frozen applications. Part of KM’s K Peel range, it allows food manufacturers to meet the growing demand, particularly from supermarkets, for mono material packaging that is designed for recycling.
2023, will quite highly penalise packaging like this that is difficult to recycle.” The new PP lidding film is also designed for recycling around the world, with some countries already having well-developed recycling infrastructures for polyolefin (polyethylene and polypropylene) plastics. In the UK, front-of-store recycling facilities allow consumers to return polyolefin-based flexible packaging. A similar approach is taken in other markets. For example, Australia’s REDcycle initiative and, in South Africa, polyolefins are the largest plastic commodity recycled by weight.
The lidding films are ideal for the packaging of poultry, meat, and chilled prepared foods. Features include: • Mono structure made of one material type. • Designed for recyclability. • Ideal for use during food preparation and microwave cooking. • Peelable from the tray. • Suitable for ambient, chilled, or frozen applications. • Exceptional transparency. • Excellent anti-fog capability. • Available with or without barrier. As well as satisfying the needs of supermarkets and consumers who are seeking more recycle-ready solutions, KM is helping to future-proof its food packaging. KM Packaging’s commercial director Graham Holding explained: “If you have a piece of flexible packaging that, for example, is a combination of paper, plastic, and aluminium foil, then that would be a really difficult thing to segregate and put into a recycling stream. “It is anticipated that the UK government’s Extended Packaging Producer responsibility regulations, due in

Therefore, putting a tray/film combination of polypropylene onto the market feeds into an already well-established recycling system. And the new “Designing for a Circular Economy” guidelines from CEFLEX focus on polyolefin-based flexible packaging. This is due to the material making up an estimated 70-80% of the flexible packaging waste stream and because the ability to sort and mechanically recycle it is already proven at an industrial scale in Europe. KM Packaging’s main purpose is to “protect, present, preserve”. That is delivering the best packaging solutions by:

• Protecting products throughout the entire process, from factory to table. • Presenting food in a way that is attractive, professional, and recognisable. • Preserving food and extending shelf-life across the food industry. Graham said: “The main goal of our packaging is to look after and protect food. We don’t compromise on that. But we’re also trying to make sure it’s designed for recyclability and, when appropriate, it’s thinner and lighter. These are big drivers in our product-development process.” The new polypropylene lidding film products follow KM’s recent launch of all-polyester (PET), weld-seal, monomaterial lidding films within its K Seal range. Both solutions are designed for recyclability and will allow customers to avoid putting multi-layer trays and films with different plastics combined into the market. www.kmpackaging.com
At KM Packaging, we engineer reliable packaging solutions for the produce, ambient, chilled and frozen convenience food markets as well as for confectionery and snacks. Offering one of the most comprehensive ranges of lidding films available on the global market today, we work closely with customers to find the right packaging solution to ensure their products are protected, presented, and preserved.

CONVEYORS FOR DAIRY INDUSTRY
T
he dairy sector is, among the various food productions, perhaps the one that presents the greatest variability in terms of production process and this is particularly true in Italy. Almost 500 different varieties of cheeses are produced on the national territory, of which about fifty have EU recognition of protected origin. If we add to these numbers all the other dairy products we can get an idea about the complexity of this market, which inevitably reflects on the technological part of the industrial production. Industrializing a production process linked to the gastronomic tradition, keeping intact the characteristics of the product is a challenging and fascinating task. MH intervenes only minimally in the process area and only in some niche products: the alignment of the cheese in blocks leaving the vats , waxing, overturning of products in case of need for special treatments on the external surface of the product, feeding to cutting machines, obviously the transport of the naked product and finally denestersof pre-printed trays. The primary packaging in the dairy sector is also quite varied, we find horizontal flowpacks for solid cheeses, thermoforming machines or thermo-sealed trays for solids and semi-solids, as well as for yoghurt, vertical flowpacks or doypacks for whey cheeses such as mozzarella or ready grated and finally wrapping for melted and spreadable cheeses. At the exit of these machines, particularly for all those products that have a hot production process, there are often cooling and conditioning systems. To meet this need, MH uses the 106

Heliflex system, not as a LIFO buffer, but adapting it to the application with a heat exchange system and an insulated cabin. For all types of packaging, before feeding the secondary packaging, it is good practice to use conveyor belts and devices that have completely washable structures. Particular attention must be paid to the materials. The sanitizations in this sector use rather aggressive chemicals, to ensure the reduction of the bacterial load. These can have a significant impact on the useful life of mechanical components. The secondary packaging is extremely variable as well and can develop on different levels. Once arrived at the level of corrugated cardboard box or tray, a typical unit for shipping on pallets, the solutions return to being those common to all markets: wide chain and low friction conveyors, friction roller conveyors and Intralox ARB systems for distribution of packages and feeding to the palletizer. www.mhmaterialhandling.com

MICROLINE SUPPLIES ROTO - CART WITH A COMPLETE ROLL WRAPPING AND OVERPACKING SYSTEM
M
icroline, a company from Bologna specialising in the design, assembly and marketing of automated solutions for the Tissue sector, has strengthened its partnership with Roto - Cart, a leading manufacturer of Home and Personal Care products, by supplying a complete packaging and flowwrapping system for industrial rolls (AFH). The initial requirement: improved tissue packaging performance A long-standing partnership exists between Roto - Cart, one of North East Italy’s leading manufacturers and distributors of Home Care and AFH paper products, and Microline, a company from Bologna specialising in the design and supply of Tissue packaging machines, collating and conveyor systems and secondary packaging solutions. Due to a change in production requirements, the former was obliged to increase its number of roll packaging machines, previously the result of solutions engineered by the latter. Therefore, working closely with Roto - Cart technicians, Microline designed the new line layout, supplying its conveyors, upending, stacking and collating systems and, above all, the two bundling and flow wrapping machines, AL 80 and Fast Wrap 1250 respectively. The
very latest Microline solution, Fast Wrap 1250 was installed for the first time at the customer’s manufacturing facility in Veneto where its reliability was soon noted. A tailor-made line marked by outstanding efficiency The system installed at the Roto - Cart manufacturing facility embodies the essential features of Microline production aspiring to excellent performance levels, exceptional build quality and outstanding flexibility. The line is used for high-speed bundling and flow-wrapping of three product types with different shapes and characteristics: industrial AFH paper rolls, hospital paper rolls and toilet tissue. The layout aims for maximum efficiency, such as to guarantee continuous infeed, thus avoiding downtime and, at the same time, machine overloading. Depending on requirements, immediately after the processing stage, an industrial roll upending unit or toilet roll stacking system is employed, such operations being preliminary to the subsequent packaging stage that in the case of

industrial and medical products is performed by the AL 80, whilst toilet rolls move directly to the subsequent flow wrapping stage. AL 80 and Fast Wrap 1250: performance and flexibility Representing the perfect blend of strength and performance, AL 80 is one of the most popular units in the Microline line up and requires lower amounts of packaging material thanks to the very fine thickness of the film utilised and the trimming-free packaging process. In the configuration used at Roto - Cart, the bundler can achieve output of 70 packs per minute for domestic/industrial rolls and 35 packs per minute for hospital paper rolls. The subsequent stage entails the use of the Fast Wrap 1250 flow wrapper, a top performer at the same time capable of ensuring that the packs receive extremely delicate handling. The machine installed at Roto - Cart offers maximum output of 25 bundles per minute; a more than 30% increase compared to the previous range of Microline flow wrappers and the result of painstaking design and assembly. Furthermore, both these units assist system flexibility, offering the possibility of carrying out a size change in around 15 minutes for each machine by following quick and intuitive steps. Finally, both AL 80 and Fast Wrap 1250 can work with green materials for improved sustainability of the line. The results: a more efficient line and greater wealth

ood cans protect their contents from external elements such as light and air, preserve vitamins and flavour, and can be stocked with no energy consumption. Furthermore, they also stand out in terms of sustainability, as can steel can be recycled countless times with no loss of quality. Even today, 80% of the steel produced in the history of our civilisation is still in use. Auxiliar Conserva has developed the OpenVac can thanks to the partnership with Thyssenkrupp Rasselstein GmbH. Although food cans have been a well-proven and appreciated packaging for decades, there is a new feature in the filling process: the OpenVac can. When filling the OpenVac can, a high vacuum is generated, which makes the food preserved with no alterations in taste or colour. It is possible to fill the can with no covering liquid, and the food maintains its natural freshness. This innovative idea came from Auxiliar Conservera from the Murcia region, a Spanish company founded in

1961. The Murcia area is traditionally known for its cultivation of fruit and vegetables and is the ideal location for a company in the canning industry. Auxiliar Conservera is a medium-sized company with around 900 employees and was awarded the “Can of the Year” prize with their OpenVac project. In developing this innovative can, Auxiliar partnered with its trusted packaging steel supplier, Thyssenkrupp Rasselstein GmbH. “The development of the idea required a lengthy test phase to select the right material and give the right shape to the can. Our partner Thyssenkrupp Rasselstein from Andernach actively supported us in developing and testing various patterns and profiles. The OpenVac is a two-part deep-drawn can. The development of the bottom geometry and the distinctive top creasing was the biggest challenge. And also the white sheet metal had to respond to special requirements. With Rasselstein® High Formability steel, we were able to find the right material together, after long tests”, explains José Manuel Meca Gómez, president of Auxiliar Conservera. Thyssenkrupp Rasselstein GmbH from Andernach is proud of this innovation. “Auxiliar’s idea is brilliant: the liquid-free food is filled into a vacuum chamber, and the elimination of oxygen guarantees the highest quality. We are delighted to have been so intensively involved in this complex development process. This shows how close our relationship with our customers is and how strong our mutual trust is,” says Miguel Valdivia, head of distribution in the Spanish market.
OpenVac displays several revolutionary developments, both in the filling process and in the can geometry. It also uses the innovative Rasselstein® High Formability steel. Thanks to the high vacuum atmosphere during filling and preservation treatment, the product maintains its freshness, giving the impression of coming directly from the plant. Products such as olives, artichokes and pears have the same taste as when they are freshly picked. Eliminating the air makes it impossible to oxidise the food, so, for example, tuna preserves its natural colour. The vacuum pro-

cess also makes it possible to reduce the salt content and remove the syrups and sugars added to the fruit. Vitamins and nutrients are preserved even better. The new production process makes it possible to create an airtight seal, and the consumer can open the can safely with no risk of injury thanks to the rounded edges. The lid has an aluminium tab. Once you open the can, you can hear the typical noise of the vacuum storage going off, which shows to the consumer that the product has been packaged safely. The environment also benefits from OpenVac innovation, as thermal processes are shorter and energy is saved.
for more than two years to preserve artichokes. “In Auxiliar cans, our artichokes retain their colour, freshness and texture. The feedback from our customers is positive,” explains Juan Ignacio Perez, from Mensajero Alimentación. Auxiliar is working together with the Fraunhofer Institut on the further development of OpenVac innovation, and this partnership will soon lead to the expansion of the offer, particularly in terms of can sizes. In this process of further development, Auxiliar can also count on the support of the packaging steel manufacturer ThyssenKrupp Rasselstein. “With the OpenVac innovation, we will go down new paths together with Auxiliar and change the concept of the food can. We are delighted to have found the right material and geometry as part of the development process and will continue to stand by our trusted customer Auxiliar,” explains Miguel Valdivia.

COST-EFFECTIVE ENTRY-LEVEL MODELS FOR DIRECT WEB PRINTING
I
n the second half of 2020 MULTIVAC has launched a new series of BASE-LINE direct web printers for thermoforming packaging machines in the lower and medium output range. The main features of these cost-effective entry-level models in the BASELINE DP 110/130 series are space-saving de-sign, optimum hygiene characteristics and a high level of flexibility in terms of printing technology. Direct web printers are used as a means of efficient and reliable printing of films within the packaging machine. In addition to the proven DP 2x0 series, MULTI-VAC has now developed two cost-effective entry-level models, the DP 110 and DP 130 direct web printers, where no sacrifices have to be made in terms of op-timum hygiene and maximum safety standards. Both models can be installed on all thermoforming packaging machines from the R 0xx to R 5xx series. The compact and space-saving design leaves the loading area completely free. Since no enclosure is required due to the stepper motor drives used, this means that access to the printer is quick and easy. Printing technology There are three different printing technologies available, thermal transfer, inkjet and thermal inkjet, all of which provide a reliable printing process. Users of MULTIVAC TTO (thermal transfer) printers also benefit from cost savings in ink ribbon consumption. These printers can be turned through 90 degrees, so that they can print in both the pack running direction and across the packs. This means that the most advantageous print direction for ink ribbon consumption can always be selected. Uniform operating concept All MULTIVAC direct web printers are specially designed for the particular pack-aging machine, and they therefore form a perfect unit as regards design and controls. The shifting indexers as well as the MULTIVAC printers can be operated directly via the control terminal of the packaging machine. The operating pa-rameters are saved via recipe management and automatically transferred at every batch change. This ensures that there is rapid conversion to other prod-ucts and pack sizes, which in turn provides a high level of line availability. If MULTIVAC printers are used, operators also benefit from automatic print lay-out management via the MUL120
TIVAC HMI control terminal. When the recipe for a particular product is called up, the correct print layout is also loaded automat-ically. Operating errors can therefore be prevented from the start. Perfectly coordinated consumable materials So that the optimum printing results are achieved, MULTIVAC offers a compre-hensive range of consumable materials, which is constantly being expanded. materials meet the highest quality standards and are perfectly tailored to the particular printing system. New to the range is the MULTIVAC Standard Plus XL thermal transfer ribbon, which achieves a running length of up to 1,200 metres thanks to the reduced thickness of the carrier material. This means that the number of necessary roll changes is reduced, which in turn reduces downtime and increases the efficien-cy of the packaging line.

HIGH-TECH FOR THE HIGH CARE SECTOR
O
ptima Consumer has developed a solution concept for the fully automated evacuation, gassing and seaming of infant formula containers. OPTIMA EGS is the innovative machine concept that makes processes safer and more efficient. This newly-developed system is the result of extensive market research, and takes into account the growing demand for reliable manufacturing and product quality in the infant formula industry. Sensitive products like infant formula demand completely safe manufacturing processes. Optima Consumer responded to increased awareness about product safety by conducting extensive product-based market research. These demands by the market were translated into a new machine concept, the OPTIMA EGS, a machine designed for the fully automatic evacuation, gassing and seaming of infant formula products. Focusing on safety and efficiency in production and resources “The OPTIMA FS filling machine and the OPTIMA EGS enable us to supply the centerpiece of infant formula production lines from a single source,” says Christoph Held, the Managing Director of OPTIMA consumer GmbH. “The OPTIMA EGS is our response to today’s market demands”, explains Held. When developing it, the company focused on maximum production reliability, resulting in high product quality and the conservation of resources. The first OPTIMA EGS is operating successfully at Elb-Milch The first OPTIMA EGS was put into operation in mid2019 at the Mittelelbe dairy plant, also known as ElbMilch. “The OPTIMA EGS is a perfectly adapted system that combines high operating speeds and maximum safety and quality levels”, says Uwe Bedau, the Managing Director of Elb-Milch. The company is part of the Krüger Group and has been producing dry milk products in Stendal since 1991. “Officially, the residual oxygen levels are lower than 1 percent, and so are in a range that meets all the requirements of modern infant nutrition. In reality, in production the values are usually much lower than this”, says Bedau. 122
The footprint of the machine has been reduced by over 40 percent Another noteworthy feature is its compact design, as the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is an important basis for deciding whether to invest in new machines and systems. Bedau adds, “All of the functions – evacuation, gassing and seaming – are contained within a small area”. This effectively lowers the operating costs for the clean room. The space requirement has been reduced by more than 40 percent compared to conventional post-gassing systems. The OPTIMA EGS also operates in complete harmony with the high speeds of the OPTIMA FS filling machine. “These points, along with Optima employees’ commitment, has led us to purchase the OPTIMA EGS following the pilot phase”, Bedau explains. A Chinese customer has also already commissioned Optima to supply a complete high-care room – the heart of infant formula lines. Track and tracing of all relevant process parameters As well as the machine’s small footprint, users also benefit from the clear traceability of all the containers. With the OPTIMA EGS, it is possible to assign important production data to each container in a clear and traceable way via the processing procedures. This also includes documentation of all process parameters, for instance the negative pressure stages for meeting the residual oxygen values which are required for each individual can at every step in the process. This is possible because each can is evacuated, gassed and seamed

individually. Production data can be stored using the line management system developed by Optima, and critical key figures are clearly displayed. It also means that entire production lines can be networked with machines made by different manufacturers, so optimizing overall equipment effectiveness in a targeted way. When they are used in combination with software tools, for example for predictive maintenance to increase machine availability, Optima Smart Services make production processes even more reliable and efficient. Patented functional cover prevents contamination In the past, foreign bodies found in the product have resulted in recall measures being taken, so protecting unsealed cans is vital. This need is met by the patented function lid. The cans are not transported open once the product has been added. They are closed with a function lid during evacuation and gassing. This eliminates the need for the laborious additional function of clinching, so reducing the risk of imploding cans.
tained in the product is released. Depending on the product, a residual oxygen content of 0.5 percent is achieved with an output of up to 250 cans per minute. The machine is now available worldwide. Optima is a turnkey partner, developing custom solutions that include additional process steps with harmonized interfaces – from the product concept, comprehensive filling and gassing tests, line simulations with digital twins, design reviews in the Digital Innovation Center to commissioning, and safe, successful production, based on the OPTIMA Total Care life cycle management program. Right now, the Optima Consumer development team is already working on more key systems to provide even greater safety and efficiency in infant formula production. The next goal for Optima Consumer on the development roadmap is a nondestructive 100% leakage check. www.optima-packaging.com
An innovative evacuation method reduces the residual oxygen content Challenging products, some of which contain new ingredients, demand increased product protection. The aim is to achieve reduced residual oxygen levels. This need has been met by an evacuation process which has been specially developed for infant formula. The product is “brought to the boil” in the process via different pressure stages without the need for valves and the oxygen con-

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN OF PLASTIC PACKAGING WITH PLASTSHIP AND RECYCLASS
P
lastship, a platform for the procurement and quality assurance of recycled plastics, and RecyClass, an initiative to improve the recyclability of packaging, combine their offerings. Manufacturers and distributors of plastic packaging can thus meet the growing consumer demand for more sustainability by using RecyClass, an evaluation standard for recyclability developed from the perspective of European plastics recyclers. As a certification body, plastship evaluates and certifies the recyclability of plastic packaging based on the RecyClass method and supports brands and manufacturers in the design of recyclable packaging solutions. For consumers, easily recyclable packaging can be labeled. The result is the classification in a recyclability class (A to F) by certificate, a result report and a logo including certificate number.
recycling but also simultaneously increases the to be achieved recyclate quality. The challenge is to ensure that reality is reflected in a standard that delivers valid and comparable results, allows a wide range of applications and is scalable. Thus, effects can be felt across regions and the effectiveness of optimization measures can be tracked. This requires an international approach. Since material flows often cross borders and plastics processors and brands are often internationally active, it makes
Andreas Bastian, founder and managing director of plastship: “When I buy a product, I want its packaging to be recycled. However, up to now I as a customer cannot really tell if a packaging is recycled, and if so, how well. For commercial or private end users, the question of recyclability refers directly to the input quality in recycling. If this improves, the quality of recycled plastics will also improve. This, in turn, determines, if legally possible, their possible uses in new applications. In order to approach the issue of sustainability as a brand, ensuring that the used packaging arrives in the recycling process as a high-quality resource and promotes circular economy is therefore a good first step. A key figure to promote the circular economy Recyclability can be the focus indicator for the recyclability and thus for a functioning recycling economy in the field of plastic packaging, if it not only ensures

plastship offers a Europe-wide proof of recyclability as official certification body of the RecyClass initiative sense to pursue a European standard in the assessment of recyclability. This will make it easier for all players to orient themselves towards an assessment basis for the joint pursuit of sustainable goals and the promotion of the recycling economy for plastic packaging. A European standard for the assessment of recyclability For Bastian, RecyClass is “the most promising instrument to create a comprehensive, EU-wide standard for
the assessment of recyclability and thus provide clarity to plastics converters, brand owners and end users regarding recyclability”. The 2019 initiative brought together various players in the plastic packaging value chain to create uniform guidelines for the Design for Recycling, a standardized assessment method and test protocols for evaluating the recyclability of plastic packaging and new packaging technologies on the European market. During a test, specifications from manufacturers are collected and analyzed using an online tool. Accredited auditors confirm the results by means of defined analyses and issue a certificate. The data and information on the collection, sorting, separability and recycling of packaging are considered EU-wide. They are systematically examined using realistic criteria and practical recyclability is proven. In addition, the reasons for an evaluation are explained in a comprehensible manner and alternatives and best practices are communicated. Possible conflicting objectives between recyclability and the functions of the packaging are taken into account. Sustainability - far more than just a marketing aspect The sustainability of packaging is increasingly becoming an economic necessity for Bastian. “Already today, sustainable management and the use of recyclable packaging are key elements in the corporate strategy of many brands. Through packaging, companies can visibly implement sustainability measures and communicate them to their customers. Many industrial companies are also orienting themselves towards new sustainability goals, which are leading to supply chains being optimized and thus to previous packaging solutions being reconsidered. Ultimately, the importance of the circularity of a product and packaging will continue to increase with regard to sustainability. Recyclability provides the reliable key figure for alignment with the circular economy. The establishment of recyclable packaging is an elementary step towards achieving sustainability goals.“

TIMBER, INGEGNO AND SMART PACKAGING
I
ntelligence and timber since a few years had no relation to each other, now SGARZI PACKING has jointed them into an unique concept: smart packaging!
When Mario Sgarzi gave birth to his company, back in 1965, the work was carried out in a totally artisanal way, with great dedication and attention to the quality of the products, materials and also of the workers, which the Sgarzi family has always kept in mind in great consideration and treated with the respect of those who, like Mario, have created a company from scratch, feeling like a worker among his employees! Sgarzi Packing, however, did not stop at that level: the evolution to a technologically advanced and organized company rapidly developed under Fabio’s management. The second generation saw, in fact, carry on Mario’s values by applying them, however, not only to the creation of products but also and above all to customer services. Many years ago Fabio Sgarzi grasped the need that was being created in the companies of our Emilia-Romagna region, to “delegate” to third parties, competent and specialized, everything related to the preparation of the shipment, allowing themselves to concentrate their activities exclusively on the company’s core business. The organization of Sgarzi Packing - in the meantime the business had acquired the new company name - was, therefore, modified and expanded: new staff was hired, so as to form teams of packers for packaging, the clos-

ing of the packaging, Logistic spaces have been set up to store the customers’ machinery; in short, the structure for the “turnkey” management of shipment preparation was created, in an internal logistics outsourcing. But it was a few years after that Fabio Sgarzi began to meditate on how to collect and process data relating to his sector; data relating to packaging and shipments, labor times involved in packaging and relative cost allocation. It will seem strange to think that the owner of a company producing wooden crates would pose these problems ... actually it might seem so if you didn’t go and see the way of operating, of managing business processes, which in Sgarzi Packing was implemented, thanks to the study of the INGEGNO platform and its application in all branches of the company itself. In fact, what Fabio set himself as a goal, when he started studying INGEGNO in collaboration with the software house, was to create an application that would allow to keep under control and manage in optimization all the phases concerning activities related to purchases, logistics and picking, labor and materials. used for packaging, carried out in the shipping warehouse area. When the project was developed in 2017, a new era began at Sgarzi Packing: the era of intelligent packaging! That’s right: intelligent packaging, because “big data” is not only encountered in decision analysis in large corporate organizations or in financial forecasting, big data is all around us and we can exploit and analyze it using the right tools, extracting information that are used to obtain the analysis that we need so much when we need to make evaluations, make decisions, verify cost allocations! This is what the application allows you to do as part of the “post end of line”, in the preparation of the shipment. INGEGNO, in fact, allows Customers to manage all the data relating to the goods being shipped, both in the case of constant shipments, as in companies producing mechanical parts or in spare parts areas, and in the case of discontinuous shipments, as in the industrial area for the shipment of machinery, collecting and combining every product, packaging and man-hours data in the packaging and handling phases from the end of the line to the truck-container loading, comparing packaging square meters to man hours used, filtering by product feature and quantity, by type of shipment ... moreo-

Clients will get total control over assets in services and packaging contracted to SGARZI PACKING ver, through INGEGNO, the Customer of Sgarzi Packing receives daily all the data organized and filtered according to the individual needs of the Company sectors. The latest innovation, linked to the INGEGNO platform, is the automatism in the data flow of the human resources area towards the Customer: all the information on Sgarzi personnel, such as courses carried out and certifications obtained, are channeled and combined within INGEGNO, making available the on-line consultation by the Customer, in his own reserved area on the platform itself, of all the data relating to the personnel who will work the next day on the scheduled orders. That’s right: from design to production processes, from packaging to warehouse logistics, thanks to the application of INGEGNO, Sgarzi Packing collects data, processes them, manages them and passes them on to the Customer together with the services and products provided. All this translates into transparency, that is, protection towards the Customer in the procurement of internal logistics and packaging services: INGEGNO is in fact a control tool on both qualitative and economic phases. So what makes INGEGNO so special? Few keywords characterize its application and the value obtained from it: RATIONALIZATION with the optimization
of processes, SAVINGS with cost reduction, QUALITY with the identification and elimination of hidden costs, TRANSPARENCY with the control of contracted activities and clarity in the data on orders and cost centers, LEGALITY with Sgarzi personnel only employees and in good standing with hiring and contributions. IMPACTING PRESENT, AFFECTING FUTURE. Economic results and social benefits are complementary objectives through which we have always generated value for our company, customers, employees, suppliers and for the entire community. It’s time to restart from Zero: our very latest promise to start from innovation to create products, production processes and services, with a renewed logic of sustainability. Now more than ever, we are all aware that our commitment today will help to shape the world of tomorrow.
LOW IMPACT PROGRAM More commitment, less impact.
NO PLASTIC PROGRAM More sustainable solutions, less plastic in products and process.
