CTB announces “pay-what-youcan” initiative at downtown location

C

ollegetown Bagels has announced that its City Centre location on East State Street will become a community kitchen after a partnership with World Central Kitchen.

The move, designed to protect people who might have trouble paying for food otherwise during these uncertain times, will make pre-packaged soups, salads, sandwiches and entrees available on a “paywhat-you-can” basis. It comes at a time when many local residents are facing unsteady financial situations due to job loss or hours reductions related to the COVID-19 outbreak and the resulting social rules being put in place to prevent its spread.

“Ithacans that would like to aid in the effort have the option to ‘pay it forward’ at the register to help buy the next meal for their neighbors in need,” the restaurant said in a press release. “Collegetown Bagels is following the guidance of World Central Kitchen to provide meals during this uncertain time and will continue to evolve to serve the needs of the Ithaca community.”

There will also be a 10 percent discount for members of the hospitality industry going forward at the restaurant, which will continue to offer the full menu for delivery, curbside pickup and take-out in accordance with the state’s new guidelines against sit-in dining.

As far as we know, a similar deal will not be implemented at the restaurant’s other locations currently.

Ithaca Mask Makers rallying to help local mask supply

T

here’s necessary fear about the stability of the nation these days as COVID-19 continues to impact nearly every facet of life.

But that anxiety has motivated some people to get involved in whatever way they know how, including getting creative like the Ithaca Mask Makers.

The group is the brainchild of Adrienne Huffman, a local 30 year old finishing her degree at Ithaca College and working for Cornell University’s Outdoor Education program. She posted on the Ithaca subreddit page over the weekend gauging interest in a project where locals could use their skills to help with the growing chance of a shortage.

Huffman said since the Reddit post, she’s heard back from about 20 people willing to be part of the chain to help create the masks. A single mask, she said, can take about 15-20 minutes each to make, so they are trying to find more creative ways to create them while adhering to an assembly

line mentality, hoping that will be more efficient than each person making single masks by themselves. The masks will be made from fabric and will be available to anyone who wants one.

“I’ve been pretty humbled by the response,” she said, emphasizing that all those who have signed up deserve credit and that she’s simply good at organizing resources. “We’re all coordinating this endeavour. The idea came when I saw Governor Cuomo put out a tweet a couple days ago asking people to get creative and see who could fill the gaps of the medical needs. [...] My sister and my mom were interested right away, but then I posted on Reddit to see if anybody wanted to donate fabric or skills or anything and the post on Reddit was honestly the biggest hit that I got. I’m still getting replies from people who want to help from that.”

Huffman has set forth.

“That’s why I wanted to reach out to a lot of people, because if we can get more hands on deck we can make it a more operationalized endeavour,” she said.

People who are interested in receiving masks, or interested in getting involved with the mask makers, should contact Huffman at ithacamaskmakers@gmail.com. At some point, she would also like to attract some people who could help sew gowns for healthcare workers if those are needed at that time too.

“I’ve always been inspired by what can happen when groups of people come together to accomplish something important,” Huffman said. “A group with a focused purpose becomes greater than the sum of its parts, and this group is no different. We have identified a need and we are committed to doing our part to address that need. I can’t, in good conscience, take credit for what’s happening here because I am not doing this alone.”

Candidates submit petitions for NYS 125th Assembly District

ith new guidelines in place limiting the necessary number of petitions, all declared candidates for the New York State’s 125th Assembly District seat passed the minimum threshold to qualify for the primary election coming in a few months. The packed field, of seven Democrats and a Republican/ Libertarian, is vying to replace longtime assemblymember Barbara Lifton, who announced she wouldn’t seek reelection, opting to retire instead.

The leaders among Democratic candidates were two Ithaca-based politicians, Common Council member and Lifton communications manager Seph Murtagh and Tompkins County Legislator Anna Kelles. Murtagh secured 876 signatures, all registered Democrats, while Kelles followed closely behind with 835 Democrat signatures plus five from Working Family Party members.

Perhaps fittingly, Murtagh and Kelles have picked up the most notable endorsements in the race as well: Murtagh was publicly backed by Ithaca Mayor Svante

Myrick, and Kelles was endorsed by the Working Families Party of New York and the local building trades.

Ithaca attorney Sujata Gibson, one of the outsiders in the race, registered an impressive 760 Democratic signatures, good for the third most among Democratic candidates. She was followed by Dryden Town Supervisor Jason Leifer, who collected 567 Democratic signatures, and Jordan Lesser,

aturday morning, the Ithaca City School District confirmed that it had been informed of the first positive COVID-19 test in its community.

It’s not clear if the positive test came from a student or a staff member or otherwise, and Superintendent Luvelle Brown did not specify which school the person would have been in contact with. But it does appear that Brown is notifying directly whichever school was impacted in coordination with the Tompkins County Health Department. A source passed along an email sent Saturday afternoon to the DeWitt Middle School community informing them that the positive test was someone from DeWitt, though still without specifying whether it was a student, staff 25–31 ,

member, etc.

“As you know, privacy is critical when it comes to students, personnel and health care,” Brown wrote. “We are notifying each school community when the first case at their school arises, as promised. However, I am asking our entire community to respect and protect the right to privacy these members of our community are afforded under the law. Again, the TCHD directly contacts those people who are at risk.”

Brown said that while the news “may generate anxiety and concern,” it was bound to happen considering the rapid spread of the disease across the country. Brown said future communication (and those already sent) can be viewed on the district’s special coronavi-

Meanwhile, the two candidates from Cortland County, Family and Children’s Services CEO Lisa Hoeschele and Cortland County Legislator Beau Harbin rounded out the field with 318 and 350 signatures, respectively.

The number of signatures don’t hold any sort of bearing on the actual race, but a candidate must hit a minimum amount to make the ballot for the primary. The Democratic primary for the seat will be held on June 23, 2020.

While the race has been attractive for Democrats so far, only one conservative has entered the race: Matthew McIntyre of Cortland County, who collected 257 Republican signatures and 11 from registered Libertarians.

While petitions were still due on the same day, March 20, a directive from Governor Andrew Cuomo earlier this month reduced the minimum number of petition signatures to 30 percent of its normal number. The decision was driven by a desire to cut the spread of COVID-19 by lessening the number of face-to-face interactions which would result from campaigning from door to door. This meant that candidates only had to acquire 150 signatures instead of the normal 500.

As announced Friday, Tompkins County now has 11 positive test cases, with 280 people awaiting test results.

The news comes one day after Cornell confirmed their own duo of cases from their school community, the first confirmed cases from Cornell.

Ithaca College has announced two of their own confirmed cases, addressed by the school earlier in the week.

“Earlier today, we were notified that the Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD) confirmed the first two cases of COVID-19 within the Ithaca campus community of faculty, staff and students,” wrote Cornell president Martha Pollack. “Cornell is working with TCHD to support the health and safety of the individuals (who have been in isolation and receiving ongoing care) and of the broader community.

Like Brown, Pollack did not divulge any more information about the individuals, but encouraged Cornell people to continue practicing their safety measures.

“I appreciate that this news is difficult, though it is not entirely unexpected given the rise in confirmed cases nationally and globally, and the recent news of the first confirmed cases in the county,” Pollack wrote. “But as I have mentioned in prior messages, public health experts are clear that the best way to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 is through social distancing—the number of interactions that provide the opportunity for the spread. Our actions to date have been grounded in this expert guidance.”

Both said TCHD would be reaching out to people who may have had contact with the positive cases as a part of the contact investigations, and further guidance will be through them.

Getting to know Ithaca Festival’s new executive director Selena Hodom

S

elena Hodom takes over the Ithaca Festival at a turbulent time, as group gatherings around the world are being canceled and the festival itself has had financial difficulties over the last several days. With a long background in event planning and music festival organization, Hodom brings a wealth of experience to the position and wants to make the festival bigger and better in the coming years… as long as it happens, currently scheduled for May 28-31. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

IT: What made you want to be involved with Ithaca Fest?

SH: I have been involved in the Ithaca Festival since 2014. My role has been coordinating the Operations and Technical Direction of the Festival. I have handled the staffing for those teams as well as coordinated with our contractors for the live production, site layout and build.

IT: What do you think you bring to the director’s role?

SH: I have been planning and promoting events since 2005. I have worked with a number of industry leaders on National Tours and site builds, as well as worked with nonprofit events and organizations to help them build their events and shape their strategies. I have been active in all aspects of community event planning at one time or another. I believe I offer an institutional knowledge of the Ithaca Festival as well as the real world knowledge from the additional work I have done around the country over my career.

IT: At least since last year, we’ve heard of the financial problems for Ithaca Fest.

What’s the immediate plan to handle those in 2020?

SH: I have worked with the Ithaca Festival Board to create a strategy for 2020.

The immediate plan was to reduce spending and to create strategic partnerships with our vendors to reduce our overhead.

We revamped and re-energized our sponsorship program, and have expanded our offerings in an attempt to appeal to anyone that would like to participate in the festival. This plan will include coalitions of businesses that will band together to create programming at the Ithaca Festival. In the coming weeks, we will roll out an individual and small business donation program as well. We have applied for additional grant funding in support of our event, which has been going really well.

IT: Is there a long-term plan?

SH: The long term plan is to create a larger, more suitable event for a city of this size. Ithaca and Tompkins County area have so much to offer people that want to visit. The festival is small in comparison to other community festivals. Our goal is to

support that with a National Sponsorship program and National Grant Programs in the near future.

IT: How can people help the festival?

SH: Leading up to the event people can make a tax deductible donation through our paypal: paypal.me/ithacafestival. Participation in the festival is important; small participation fees add up. It’s a good way to have fun while supporting the event. Signing up non-profit groups to table, food vend, participate in the parade or craft fair, food vend, or by providing live art— there are so many options and all of the applications are available on our new website, Ithacafestival.org. Businesses are encouraged to sign up for sponsorships, offer discounts through our button program, or donate as well. During the festival, attendees can buy a button, merchandise from our official booth, and purchase from our vendors. This all supports what we are trying to do for the community.

IT: What kind of background do you have in event planning?

SH: I am currently the Talent Buyer for Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival, and the Production Manager for both the Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival and the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival. I have a small production company, Mind’s Eye Event Productions, that provides staffing assistance to major festivals and events as well as production support, consulting, logistics, site planning and ticketing. I have produced music festivals and events since 2005.

IT: Do you want to bring anything new to the festival?

SH: The biggest change this year will be to the Press Bay Alley Stage in the Ithaca Journal Parking Lot. This stage will be sponsored by the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival. This area will feature a farmer’s market type area with locally produced or grown products. The main goals this year are to perfect what we already have and stabilize the budget to ensure the future.

We will add some of our business groups and businesses to our official programming. Also, we will have pop-up fundraisers at local businesses.

IT: Acknowledging that the festival is three months away, how are you guys planning to navigate the COVID-19 situation?

SH: Without saying, events like ours will need to follow the advice of the CDC, WHO, the Federal and New York State, County, and City guidelines, and consult with State and County Health Departments on best practices to be able to host an event when the time comes. This

New York State Department of Motor Vehicles - has suspended service for the foreseeable future, as directed March 21. Drivers can still conduct online transactions like renewing a license or registration and many more.

TCAT - will be offering free rides to customers until April 9, 2020, though bus loads will be restricted to 20 people at a time to ensure social distancing practices.

Lime bikes - have been pulled off the streets of Ithaca and nationwide due to concerns that they could be vectors for the spread of COVID-19 if users didn’t clean them properly. The company said they’d be reexamining the situation in the coming weeks.

strategy will be laid out as the guidelines become more clear on what we need to do to protect the health and safety of our community, performers, vendors and event staff. There is a lot of uncertainty right now with mass gatherings, and we will do what is in the best interest of our community to protect everyone’s health and safety above all else.

IT: If Ithaca Festival is cancelled, as so many others have been, would that permanently kill the festival considering its financial struggles?

SH: Arts organizations, entertainers and events in general are very vulnerable at this time. I believe most likely a great deal of the population is also feeling the effects of this. It is uncertain how we would proceed at this time in the event of cancellation, we should be able to roll over most of the participants and sponsors to a future date. That plan will take form as it needs to. I can say that there is a group of people, the Board of Directors and myself, that have really pulled together to keep this Organization alive in our community.

We feel that the Ithaca Festival is a very valuable part of celebrating Ithaca and the arts. I don’t believe the festival is going anywhere in the near future and that may mean a whole lot of community good will and hard work. I think we are up for the challenge.

rowing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Monika Radloff loved the Southwest, with endless opportunities to explore nature and play and hike in the mountains. But by the time she was ready for college, she was eager to see what other regions were like, so she headed to Tulsa, Oklahoma for a Division I college volleyball scholarship at the University of Tulsa that allowed her to be a student and athlete. After completion of college Monika retraced her path back to her much-loved New Mexico where she studied to become a physician.

When Monika was selected for a residency in Family Medicine, she savored the landscape in Redding, California, getting to know the West Coast. After becoming familiar with the key issues doctors face within family practice, Monika became increasingly interested in sports medicine.

“What I love about sports medicine is that my patients are so motivated to get better. They are active and want to be able to get back to their activities, whether that is running or gardening.”

Sports medicine doctors can assist people of all ages and all activity levels to lead healthier lives with attention to

their musculoskeletal system. In other words, what we can all do to keep our bones, muscles, and tendons as healthy and happy as possible, and avoid fracture or other injury. And when we have pain or trauma, the sports medicine team can reduce pain and coordinate with colleagues (physical therapists, athletic trainers) to get us back on track?

So Monika made the leap to specialize in sports medicine, a relatively new field in medicine at that time, and she accepted a fellowship in Muncie, Indiana.

Throughout Monika’s fellowship and in her years in practice since Indiana, Monika has reaffirmed the advantages of sports medicine, with all that it offers to consumers.

“As a sports medicine physician, I not only work with high level competitive athletes, but I also take care of patients who just want to be active in order to be able to take their dog for a walk around the park. I can assist patients recovering from an injury and help to prevent future injuries.”

o matter what, there is no denying that this is a historic time. How will future Americans look back on these days? I downloaded a scene from the Cornstarch household from Ithaca 2040 via TimeTunnel, my time-travel app, and got a glimpse. (It’s sort of like a flat-screen crystal ball, but it does use a lot of bandwidth.) I saw Grandpa Cornstarch sitting in an easy chair in his living room, lost in thought and holding a single roll of toilet paper, as his granddaughters Izzy and Maddie, ages 9 and 11, walked in.

“What’s with the toilet paper, Grandpa?” asked Izzy. Eccentric behavior on the part of their progenitor was apparently nothing new.

“It’s the last one,” sighed Grandpa. “Your grandmother and I filled the basement with these things, back in ‘20.” The girls exchanged a ‘not-another-2020-story’ look.

“We were worried, you see,” he continued, “that we’d be locked in our houses without the essentials.”

“Grandpa, is this anything like the hand sanitizer story?” It was Izzy again.

“Consarn it, I’m telling you something important. Now you stay put,” he said. He had noticed the girls edging out of the room. “At first, it didn’t seem like much of anything. All the sick people were way over in China. We didn’t have a care in the world.

Heck, even the president didn’t think it would come here.”

“President Trump?” asked Izzy.

“The FIRST President Trump,” answered Grandpa.

Maddie piped up. “Is it true the president was orange in the olden days?”

“As orange as a traffic cone, by God. Now let me go on. And then, almost overnight, the coronavirus came. We saw immediately that if we were to run short of sanitary products, we’d be doomed. Doomed! Who knew how long this thing would last? So we rushed, and got ourselves a 20-year supply. It was no picnic, let me tell you. We stayed indoors all that spring...”

His story was interrupted by a loud thump outside on the front porch.

“What in tarnation was that?” demanded Grandpa. Evidently, we revert to 19thcentury exclamations in 20 years. I’m looking forward to it.

Why are patients raving about this special center? There are three Sports Medicine physicians and the program emphasizes flexibly accommodating consumers quickly.

This means a lot when someone is in pain. The department has an engaging, informal feel and the administrative staff, the athletic trainers, and the physicians all appear personally invested in good patient outcomes. Monika credits CMC’s support for this evolving department of medicine which has a booming caseload.

When Dr. Monika Radloff is not helping in her office overlooking Cayuga Inlet, she is likely in the Cayuga Medical Association’s Women’s Health Clinic on Craft Road or in CMA’s Cortland office.

“I enjoy being at more than just one location because it allows me to focus on different aspects of being

Judging from patients’ comments, sports medicine is a dynamic department within Cayuga Medicine’s rich array of services. Patients can be seen quickly, and the physicians are able to spend the time necessary to help patients get back on track. X-rays and ultrasound imaging are available on site.

Radloff and family loved the natural beauty and available outdoor activities in Flagstaff, elevation 6909 feet. But so far, they are having a good time hiking around the gorges and waterfalls in our region too.

“Being physically active is very important to my family and to me,” she said. “We have enjoyed downhill skiing with the Greek Peak Ski Club, skate skiing on groomed cross-country trails, and of course, all the wonderful summer activities in the area such as cycling, hiking, kayaking, and swimming. Annaliese, age 8, and Kaarina, age 5, have been having fun skiing every weekend, with their two active parents rushing to catch up.”

Lessons from another pandemic

S

ome perspective on COVID-19: As a middle-aged gay man and social worker who lived through the AIDS epidemic in New York City in the 1980’s, my fellow survivors and I saw peers drop dead daily by the hundreds and eventually thousands while our pleas to government and health officials were ignored. Not until we got furious and took to the streets, and celebrities like Rock Hudson became afflicted did it get any modicum of a response. On the other hand, the crack epidemic that emerged around the same time and largely affected people of color and lower incomes, got a very swift response: lawmakers re-wrote drug laws that sent the victims to prison and tore their families apart. We’re still struggling to address the devastating legacy of that injustice.

In stark contrast, COVID-19 has gotten a lot of attention, and fairly quickly. It may be clunky, irregular and confusing, but government and health officials’ response has been massive.

Maybe it sounds cynical to say so, but it’s no doubt because it was clear from the start that this illness can affect anyone and potentially everyone. Every culture. Every color. Every income bracket. Every sexuality and gender. Officials are scrambling to provide testing and treatment.

They’re even considering sending us all a check for $1200! By all means demand and expect an effective response, but also be grateful that we’re not being ignored, sent to prison, or watching our children go to foster care or far worse.

To the Editor: COVID-19 Rent Debate

R

egarding the recent petition calling for a freeze in rents, this effort ignores the realities facing local housing providers. The petition exacerbates housing tensions in trying times. From an economic perspective, property management is the livelihood for countless local residents. From a health perspective, landlords and staff will be exposed to COVID-19 as they continue to maintain buildings and serve residents. The intricacies of property management call for greater community understanding and a willingness to see the provision of housing as a legitimate trade.

The challenges facing residents, especially renters in the service industry, is unprecedented. That said, a freeze in rent is untenable.

Beyond a landlord’s largest expense (monthly mortgage payments and escrowed taxes), there is payroll, insurance, utilities, management fees, materials, and capital expenditures. We service debt on lines of credit used to renovate buildings and bring deteriorated housing stock into compliance. All of this is made possible by monthly rent checks. Advocating for a freeze calls on local residents (landlords) to lose their livelihoods. A freeze inadvertently calls on tenants to lose access to timely maintenance and customer service. The City and County would lose much needed revenue in the midst of a Ma r ch

national crisis.

Tenants facing economic uncertainty due to this emergency should work with their housing providers on an individual basis. While many tenants will be able to pay rent throughout this time, every situation will be different. Now is a unique opportunity for local organizers, renters, and community landlords to engage in meaningful dialogue.

An Open Letter to the City of Ithaca and Cornell University If local measures within Ithaca against the coronavirus prove effective, infection and death rates will soon be much higher in neighboring counties than in Ithaca.

Ithaca residents will be surrounded by a population outside our borders suffering far higher infection and death rates.

That brief period will end quickly unless your offices take steps in advance to mirror and reinforce the exact steps taken at the state, national and international levels. Singapore took immediate, very early steps in advance to insulate itself from China, and succeeded.

Europe and the U.S. later did so but too late.

The exact same situation exists locally.

Roadblocks themselves are already feasible if your offices take action on Monday. Mobile, drive-through testing capacity will continue to rise, but it may be too late when it becomes feasible, if roadblocks were not already set up immediately to accomplish the following: 1. To get personnel and procedures up and running right now, by Tuesday, so they are ready and have had troubleshooting completed before Day One; that is, the first day when increased drive-through testing becomes feasible in the near future.

2. Now, officers and newly-deputized officers should require all individuals entering city or town limits to take one minute, at roadside, to fill out a 3-question questionnaire to report any already-apparent symptoms, recent contacts and recent travel patterns.

3. In one additional minute, a signed pledge should be required of all entering individuals to self-quarantine for 14 days, along with enforced requirements, including a refundable deposit, to report by phone via hotline with 5 days, and again with 10 days of entry, to report the absence or presence of symptoms.

4. Equipment for roadside taking of temperatures is already available and would take another minute.

5. If the entire procedure causes delays and frustration, that in turn will help reduce movement into the town (or city, or county).

6. Address destination of each individual can be recorded, and if entry is for purposes other than those allowed by New York State under its lockdown guidelines, entry should then be barred.

7. Capacity for roadside testing and subsequent tracing can be built up further, soon.

Test results take days, but once obtained, any positive results can be traced immediately with the benefit of contact information taken down by officers at roadside, in addition to the required reporting-in by telephone by all entrants.

Cornell hockey teams both finished #1, but left unsatisfied

I

have been interviewing Mike Schafer since he became head coach of the men’s hockey team at Cornell in 1995. I got to know him 12 years prior to that when he was a stellar defenseman for the Big Red, and never in the proverbial million years would I have imagined that we would be having a conversation in late March, with me congratulating him on his fifth ECAC Hockey Tim Taylor Coach of the Year award, his team’s #1 national

ranking, and then extending my condolences…

Schafer was nice enough to speak with me about the whirlwind of events that culminated in the cancellation of the remainder of the Big Red’s season, and while it was very clear that Mike feels a real sense of personal loss and disappointment, it was also obvious that he embraces his role as a role model for his athletes. team, the young men are experiencing loss on several levels—the loss of the opportunity to win a national title, the loss of their social connections, and for some, the potential loss of the opportunity to graduate with their class.

“Initially, we were thinking on a small scale,” Schafer said of his team’s initial reaction when told that there would be a disruption. “We were still thinking there was a possibility we would play, but then it all escalated so quickly.”

The coach took notice when the Ivy League cancelled its men’s and women’s basketball tournament. “That,” he offered, “was just a snapshot of what was to come.“ When asked what he told his players in regard to coping with such a big disappointment, Schafer said, “I told them that this is without precedent, that nobody has ever gone through this before. The only time I have ever seen this scale of disruption was right after September 11th, when things started to unravel like they did.” He added, “They’re a mature group of kids.

They put things in perspective. When you see people dying, people losing their jobs, it totally changes.”

There has been a lot of discussion about the NCAA possibly extending eligibility to athletes who have had the rug pulled out from under them, and I asked Schafer about that. He replied, “This is my

opinion: The NCAA will probably do something like that with spring sports, but it’s unlikely that they will for winter sports. Some winter sports teams were already done, and some, like us, just had a small portion of our season left to play. It’s unfortunate, but that’s the way it is.”

According to Schafer, some of the Big Red’s senior players will “have an opportunity to play pro hockey, either in Europe or here in the States.” He added, “When this situation clears up, they will start that process of taking the next step, and both Yanni Kaldis and Noah Bauld both have a really good chance.”

Drawing on our 35-year friendship, I turned the discussion to Schafer’s personal perspective. I pointed out that, while his players had been dreaming about a national championship since they first laced up a pair of skates 15 years ago, his dream started 45 years ago. When asked how he was dealing with this turn of events he said, “Honestly, it’s tough to answer all the emails and do these interviews. As a coach, you see seasons end for a lot of reasons—an injury, a loss, a disappointing season that didn’t go the way you thought it would. Having a season end when you are ranked number one doesn’t happen often.”

As for his fifth Coach of the Year award (the Big Red was 23-2-4), Schafer said, “It’s a team award. These guys were so consistent, they played great, and when they do such a great job, it reflects on the coaching staff.”

Spend the summer flying, climbing, and creating at Circus Culture. Each morning we begin with open practice followed by game, warm up, and group stretch before launching into a day of circus learning. Campers will work on trapeze, silks, unicycling, juggling, tight wire walking, acrobatics and more! We set aside time for lunch, snacks, invention, and circus inspiration each day. sheath. During knife wee, you will make a fixed blade steel knife out of 1084 flat stock steel, a leather sheath, and a custom handle. We will work with manual tools such as anvil, hammer, forge, and files and power tools such as belt grinder/ sanders, drill press, and a laser cutter/engraver for details. All humans are born creative. As musicians, piano and string players will explore creativity with improvisation games and exercises. GROWING WILD CAMP AGES 3- 5

Growing Wild creates a home in nature for young children. Our half-day program for our youngest campers. In this all-outdoor camp, children often lead the way while caring adult mentors gently guide them to try new things. Each day at Growing Wild, children explore the woods and stream and learn about the animals that call them home. Running, climbing, jumping, and splashing, they connect with their bodies and imaginations. Using natural materials like clay and rock-paint, they create works of woodland art. Join us out on the water this summer in a fun and safe introduction to the sport of rowing, taking place at the Historic Cascadilla Boathouse in Stewart Park. A local remote working veteran shares some of his secrets

orking from home has quickly become the new norm for many workers around Ithaca as New York State has increasingly raised restrictions on group gatherings and workplaces to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

In times like these, we have to turn to experts of the field to guide us, and Scott Dawson is certainly that. The software engineer from Trumansburg has been working from home for 22 years and self-published a book in July 2019 called “The Art of Working Remotely: How to Thrive in a Distributed Workplace” that proved quite timely as less than a year later a significant portion of the American workforce has been sent home.

In response to the recent wave of remoteworking, Dawson decided to publish most of his book online for free at www.artofworkingremotely.com. Dawson wanted to help people strategically, which inspired him to make the latter two portions of the book free.

The first section, he said, is mostly based on his anecdotal experiences and personal routines, which make it less universally useful during this period of time. But the second and third parts are based around making sure people have the physical and emotional tools necessary to succeed in such a role.

“A lot of people put out prescriptive work

remotely advice and a lot of it is just kind of an echo-chamber,” Dawson said. “So it was important to me to cast it in the light of my own story.”

Dawson expects the next few weeks to be a bit bumpy for people who have to transition to working remotely, but hopes that the parts of the book he has made available can smooth the adjustments a bit.

“Suddenly they’re having to learn tools, because tools are important to facilitate communication, but also different behaviors,” Dawson said.

“Working remotely takes discipline and enhanced communication and empathy and there’s a whole set of soft skills that are really important. Not everyone is meeting everyone else at the same level. So it’s a question of ‘Do I have the infrastructure to make this work well?’ and ‘Are my staff, the people I’m relying on, equipped to do this well?’”

Unlike many today, Dawson began working from home out of personal preference. He told his boss at the time that, because he didn’t want to live in New York City anymore and wanted to avoid the hassle of a daily commute, he’d be looking for another job. But the company liked the work he had been doing so much that they decided to allow him to work remotely via telecommuting, and that has evolved over time.

Even after all this time, there are certainly still some obstacles Dawson has to overcome

in order to effectively work without burning out or becoming morose.

That was particularly apparent a few years ago when his wife, who had also been working out of their home while they both took care of their children, went back to a full-time teaching job.

“What I didn’t realize is when nobody’s around, how challenging that can be,” Dawson said.

“Now suddenly I was alone during the day, and I really felt that isolation and loneliness kick in.

Just not having that contact, and I realized you have to be a little bit intentional in seeing people, even if it’s just a few minutes of going out for coffee, or a co-working space, or a library.

But even those things are off the table now, so you have to get even more creative.”

Dawson said things like Zoom video-conference meetings are valuable sources of that type of contact, whether they are work related or simply hanging out with friends or family.

Regardless of the challenges, Dawson’s never felt the pull to get back into the office over the last two decades, even as he feels like he’s been treated unequally to some coworkers as a result of his work-from-home preference.

“There are challenges all around,” Dawson said. “A big challenge for managers is having that out of sight, out of mind mentality. It’s important to put everyone on the same playing field, and that’s hard for some people.”

Adapt and React Essential human services turn to video and telephone to serve clients while outbreak interrupts

By M att Bu tler f there’s an end in sight for the COVID-19 outbreak, it doesn’t seem very close and people are starting to accept the realization that this may be the norm for the next several weeks or months.

The human services community might be the hardest hit of all. Human services agencies virtually everywhere have had to adapt as one of their main functions, connecting groups of people who need help to a face-to-face resource (or even just to each other), has been temporarily barred by the federal government and New York State. That’s particularly apparent in Ithaca where there’s an abundance of such agencies, both government-run and not. Those adjustments have been especially crucial for their clients, most of whom depend on 22 T

the agencies for either meetings, counseling, face-to-face appointments or some other type of support.

One of the most significant closings was the Ithaca Community Recovery building at 518 East Seneca Street, commonly referred to as “518” by those in the recovery community. Thomas Evans, the chair of the board of directors for Ithaca Community Recovery, said the burden of safety became too much for them to ensure that they weren’t endangering people simply by letting meetings continue.

“It was really tough, a very difficult decision,” Evans said. “The hardest decision I made that week was closing the doors at 518. The life sustaining businesses and organizations are still running, and I would make the case that 518 offers a life-sustaining service to the community as well [...]

Initially, Evans and the board had tried to stay open while encouraging the groups that utilize the building’s spaces to employ safe social practices and hiring someone to provide extra cleaning work between meetings. Ithaca Community Recovery was even planning on hosting an increased load of meetings, as some were relocated by religious buildings in the area closing their doors. Yet spaces like the Ithaca Community Recovery building were not exempt from the state’s tightening group gathering restrictions, forcing organizations to eliminate their face to face meetings. In that space alone, meetings for several different recovery groups were held multiple times throughout the day: Evans estimates that 65 groups regularly use the

building for meetings, and those meetings can range from around 10 people to around 50.

Evans said many of the meeting leaders have moved their sessions online in an attempt to maintain a sense of normalcy and routine among the chaos. Evans said that could prove effective in the short-term, although its long-term efficacy remains to be seen.

“The recovery community around here has [picked up] the Marco Polo app [an instant video messaging app] and they’re coordinating Zoom meetings through that,” Evans said. “I worry that people, right now, will isolate. I think a lot of people that come to the building have it as part of a habit and part of a routine and they find themselves coming back there.

And we take away the ability to stay in that

routine and they might isolate, and it’s easy to call into a phone or a Zoom meeting, but it changes habits. And I mostly worry about the newcomer, someone who hasn’t really been before.”

CARS, at least at its downtown Ithaca facility, has continued operations albeit with slight changes. Spokesperson Brad Walworth said they are actively ramping up usage of non-human contact utilities like video or tele-conferencing for clients that would be helped by those methods. Its residential Trumansburg facility is still accepting applicants, albeit more slowly.

“Cayuga Addiction Recovery Services continues to offer both Outpatient and Opioid Treatment Program services at our 334 W. State Street location,” Walworth said. “However, we are also increasing and encouraging the use of our telehealth services. All clients will be screened prior to entering the building, which will include the taking of your temperature. If individuals are interested in an initial assessment or have any question regarding existing appointments for addiction recovery services they may call us at 607-391-1038.”

Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are still being held at certain locations and also via Zoom conferences, as well as other recovery programs normally hosted by Ithaca Community Recovery, though that level of meeting only replaces the faceto-face meetings to a limited extent, said local photographer Franklin Crawford.

Crawford has been in and out of Alcoholics Anonymous for several years, and has been sober now for six.

“This situation gives me great empathy for people, like me, where there’s nothing that replaces human contact, you can’t replace it,” Crawford said. “But you can give it a surrogate, and people do get some comfort from knowing that other people are responding to them.”

Crawford noted that not everyone in those classes or meetings has access to the internet or even a working phone, which presents another challenge in and of itself.

One man, Brandon, who used to work at an Ithaca facility but moved out of town, said there’s also the question of people who can’t afford unlimited plans on their phones and whether they’ll be willing to spend valuable minutes on those meetings if they have to phone in, instead of calling family or friends instead.

“It’s vital for all recovering people because we know each other,” Crawford said.

“We can read between the lines and read facial expressions. You can read when someone’s going flat-eyed, I call it. When

the relapse is right back here and they don’t see it. They might be aware that their thinking is getting a little [wacky], but unless they open up their mouths and break the loop, it stays a secret. That’s the first thing to go, for almost every relapsing person, is the lines of communication.”

Even with a possible re-examination just a week away, as Evans said he wants to see if it’s possible and legal to re-open the Ithaca Community Recovery building on March 31, he knows the gravity of the builiding closing to the vulnerable community it serves.

“It was a serious decision, and people can die by not getting to these meetings, we understand that,” Evans said. “We did not take it lightly.”

Agencies and programs that deal with people who aren’t in recovery but are otherwise in need of human services have also had to make their own adjustments, with varying degrees of success. There’s a wide range, so many that they can’t all be visited here, but it’s fair to say that each one that place a significant amount of value on face-to-face contact are grappling with how to best serve their communities going forward while incurring as little disruption as possible.

Matt Mayers runs a program through the Southern Tier AIDS Program supporting people incarcerated and newly released from prison and helping to connect them with social services in their home coun-

ties. He explained that much of his work is already done remotely because he deals with people all over the state, but that when the New York State Department of Corrections announced a ban on visitation it severely inhibited his ability to help people who were already incarcerated, and those that have been put into prison since.

“Since then we have been unable to meet with our clientele in person and enroll them in services,” Mayers wrote in an email. “As the week progressed we have been able to reach out to clients who have been released and to nursing staff in prison in an effort to ensure individual’s are set up with treatment, health, and social services upon release. Some issues we have been facing are: post-release health appointments have been cancelled as a result of the virus and case managers that would typically meet with individuals once they are released are unable to meet with them in the community. This is a significant burden for folks who require transportation to appointments and additional face to face support upon release.”

Others still, like the Finger Lakes Independence Center (FLIC) and the Suicide Prevention Hotline, deal with people who live daily with disabilities (either from birth or acquired disabilities, meaning many seniors) or are dealing with a more immediate crisis, respectively.

they’re still working as hard as they can to answer all the phones, despite that they’re keeping all their counselors isolated from each other which has had damaging effect on their normal camaraderie.

“We’re committed to keeping the line answered,” Corazon said. “We’re working with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline because they’re doing this with all their crisis centers: how can we use technology today to answer the hotline remotely? Like Google has a phone, a VOIP, but it’s not secure and it’s not HIPAA compliant, so we don’t want to use that. We need to use a VOIP that promises privacy and is secure and unhackable. We’re anticipating a lockdown.”

Corazon said the hotline has seen an uptick in calls from college students, either ones who used campus as a haven from their families who have had to return home and are now stuck with their families in a less than ideal situation. Counselors can’t see clients, but they’re working on finding the infrastructure to do so.

FLIC Executive Director Jan Lynch noted that her office provides consumer directed personal assistance programs, meaning disabled people are allowed to guide and choose what they receive help with from around 200 home aides who work throughout the county. FLIC has also had to stop loaning out medical equipment, a popular program they ran but haven’t been able to continue due to sanitation concerns.

“I think that particularly hits the community of people with mental health disabilities the hardest, at least that’s my thought, because it contributes to a lot of anxiety and other issues,” Lynch said. She’ll be reaching out to staff this week to find out what the reaction to the new procedures has been from clients they work with directly.

The bizarre nature of the pandemic, and the way that it has brought the country grinding to a halt, does give Lynch some pause, but the reaction of the overall support services community has encouraged her even as the challenges have mounted to normal operations.

“What most emergency plans imagine is something like a blizzard or a flood,” Lynch said. “It’s just kind of disconcerting to think we’ve been doing all this effort for ‘What do people need to know in an emergency?’ and then this totally unprecedented thing happens, and all we can hope is that the Human Services community really pulls together as well as the community in general.”

I haven’t read the comic in question, but I have learned that those little devils at DC changed the identity of “Saucy Jack” (apologies to Spinal Tap), so even if you’ve read the comic, you’ll be as surprised as I was at the final reveal.

“Robot Chicken” did lots of “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” gags that I never really got, because the whole phenomenon happened just when I was getting out of toy-collecting. I was in college when the TV cartoons started airing.

I was basically tabula rasa when I sat down to watch “The Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” (FauxPop-Definitive Film, 2017, 95 min.) on Netflix.

Most intellectual property comes from a single author or writing team, four people claim credit for Superman and Batman, but the whole He-Man mythology was pieced together from the contributions of many artists, Mattel copy writers, toy designers, animators and voice artists.

An Ithaca Comic Experience

Another locally produced, locally set comic book

rom the 19th century motion studies of Eadweard Muybridge, to popular Italian “fumetti,” the use of photography in comics and sequential art has a rich but much-neglected potential. While cartooning—simplified drawing with a strong emotional pull—has dominated, photo-comics have long been niche. With the recent rise of webcomics and digital production, as well as the proliferation of more experimental sensibilities, this may be changing.

This makes last year’s publication of Stephen Saperstein Frug’s “Happenstance: A Photographic Novel” an important event. A book-length (450 page) meditation on faith, doubt, friendship, and love, this is a vital contribution to comics. That it was created in-town, and that it takes Ithaca and Cornell as its stage, makes it all the more remarkable. Shot in the fall of 2007 using local actors, the novel took over a decade to complete and was serialized online between 2017 and 2019. It can be read, in full, at http://happenstance. thecomicseries.com/.

Following a successful Kickstarter fundraiser last summer, it was self-released in print. While many independent local publications have an amateurish look and feel, this is an elegant production inside and out. Here is the novel as fully intended by its author.

As established in the opening chapter, the story revolves around four characters.

Paul (Tony Simione) is an aspiring novelist who works in a local used bookstore. He struggles with prosopagnosia—inability to recognize faces—as well as crippling depression and self-doubt. Paul and his wife Rebecca (Amy Rogers) are observant Jews. She brings him to a local café, where she introduces two fellow Cornell graduate students. (Settings will be intimately familiar to local readers but are often effectively interchangeable.) Chris (Eva Louise Hall) is a cognitive science student and an earnest, if sometimes doubtful evangelical Christian. She struggles too over her inability to tell her conservative parents about her relationship with her “roommate” Alex (Lisay Chizmar)—herself a student of comparative literature and a sharp religious skeptic.

As Frug’s story develops, the focus shifts towards an unfolding friendship between Paul and Chris. The two discuss theology, as well as their personal and familial struggles. Both are lead to challenge their respective faiths in ways that reverberate throughout the narrative and beyond.

As a (photo) novel of ideas, the characters necessarily serve as mouthpieces for more general points-of-view and their

familiar oppositions: Jew versus Christian, skeptic versus believer, scientist versus humanist—and so on. Rich as this is, the approach can threaten to become overly abstract. There are passages here where Paul and Chris’ clearly divergent yet somehow intersecting journeys begin to feel overdetermined, their alliance improbable.

Yet Frug consistently brings us back from speculation about God, the universe, and larger human purpose—back to everyday human reality and its occasionally rude intrusions. Back to happenstance.

Complimenting “Happenstance’s” sophisticated themes and emotionally resonant storyline is his keen grasp of comics’ formal elements and a compelling interplay between naturalism and abstraction. As with any artform, comics makes use of standard elements and their variations. Among these: panels and their proportions; their spacing within pages and between page spreads; the use of captions and speech balloons; and filmic variations of scale and perspective. As well, digitally manipulated photography affords new possibilities for visual style.

Frug varies such elements in ways that deny monotony and build memorable visual analogies. Variant panel grids are conscripted to create literal parallels that reinforce parallel tracks of introspection and conversation. Also effective is his filtering of backgrounds through “painterly” effects while keeping his characters more straightforwardly photographic.

Eccentric variations on—even departures from—the standard comics grid punctuate the storyline while quotations from scientific and art historical imagery conjure other places, other times. Characters and settings fragment, blur, even go dark—yet things soon return to apparent normality.
