Cascadilla Boathouse gets makeover, restored to original shingle style

M

ore than 120 years after it was built, Cascadilla Boathouse is being restored to its original shingle-style architecture.

Originally built 1894-1896, the boathouse was constructed for the Cascadilla School, a Cornell prep school still in existence on Summit Street in Ithaca.

“If you look at their building now and then look at the boathouse, you’ll see similarities,” Susan Holland, executive director of Historic Ithaca, said.

Since then, it has been used continuously as a boathouse.

It was included as part of the sale that led to the opening of Stewart Park in 1921, and was used as a training center for the Cascadilla School’s rowing team.

“Rowing was such a popular sport at that time,” Holland said.

To this day, the boathouse still houses the Cascadilla Boat Club, a non-profit that provides rowing classes and training to crew teams. However, while still functional at the most basic level, the second floor is unusable due to code issues, and overall, the building needs some improvements.

“A lot of repair work had to be done,” Holland said. “There was significant insect damage […] We’re doing all the shingles appropriately, so it will look very different to people because it’ll be super restored.

the doors, and the toilets are being changed out to make the bathrooms ADA compliant.”

Additionally, there will be repairs to the decking.

“We’re really tightening it up,” she said. “In preservation, that’s the first thing you have to do.”

Luckily, the roof is in good shape, as Friends of Stewart Park Executive Director Rick Manning said the city had replaced it a few years back. And 10-15 years ago they paid to have a new foundation put in.

“It’s sitting on muck down there,” Manning said. “The buildings were not engineered that well because it was the 1890s.”

So he said that while there’s been work done to keep the building alive, it’s “not looking very good.”

The original shingle-style architecture will be restored, a style that will be familiar to anyone who’s spent time along waterfront cities. The shingles are popular near oceans as they weather nicely.

“People will be really pleased with it,” Manning said.

The project started in summer 2018, “when the money was good,” as Holland puts it. In 2019 she was working on getting all the paperwork together, and by the beginning of 2020 they were getting ready to put out a request of qualifications (RFQ) for architects.

“We were shutting down operations, we didn’t know what was going to happen,” Holland said.

But on the bright side, they had received eight “fantastic” responses to the RFQ. “We weren’t sure about construction, but the money was there and we knew this could go forward,” she said.

The grant funds of $367,000 from the state were already committed, and the city had long set aside the 25% matching funds too. The project was able to move ahead, and Manning and Holland expect it will be done by late fall.

As for what’s next, they aren’t sure, though they have big ideas.

“The big vision is to have it be the special events center for weddings and receptions,” he said. “The building is on the national registry of historic places, so we have to treat it a special way. So we’re talking $1 million to $2 million, just to make the second story usable.”

The funding source that provided the money for the exterior renovation does not offer grants large enough to cover the interior restorations needed, but Manning said there may be national funds or other state funds to explore. He also said there has been some interest from private donors.

“It’s such a beautiful building,” he said. “I think there will be momentum and we’ll get it done.”

Amid the dire circumstances of the pandemic, the Tompkins County Public Library (TCPL) team of directors and staff worked to meet the needs of its patrons through digitized resources, virtual programs, and innovative services. Now re-opened for the public, TCPL

hanges are coming to local colleges as the presidents of both Ithaca College and Tompkins County Community College have recently announced their resignations.

Ithaca College President Shirley M. Collado is leaving the college Jan. 10, 2022 to assume the position of president and chief executive officer of the comprehensive college completion program, College Track, which works in collaboration with Emerson Collective.

The board of trustees announced that Provost and Executive Vice President La Jerne Terry Cornish has been appointed interim president of Ithaca College, effective

Aug. 30, and will serve in the position for the entirety of the 2021-22 academic year.

For the remainder of her time at Ithaca College, Collado will assume the role of senior advisor to the interim president and the board of trustees through Dec. 31 to ensure a smooth transition, as well as to continue working on projects currently in progress.

Collado has been at Ithaca College for four years, and most notably worked on “The Shape of the College” report with the Academic Program Prioritization Implementation Committee, which was adopted earlier this year. It announced the cutting of 116 positions, as well as the discontinuation of three departments

transformed the challenges they faced and lessons they learned during the pandemic into an opportunity to better serve the community.

Even though pandemic forced TCPL to shutter its doors to the public in March 2020, it continued and augmented its online services, issuing online library cards for patrons to access eBooks and maintaining their “Ask a Librarian” email reference service. In the period from June 15, 2020 to May 31, 2021, the library registered over 1,500 new patrons for library cards.

Internet service is a crucial resource that TCPL offers to its patrons, and during the pandemic, the demand for internet didn’t wane. Although they could only offer internet service for 30 minute increments — as opposed to the usual 90 — the community was grateful to still have access to WiFi. “One of the most important things that public libraries do is provide access to the internet and it’s a place for many people to come to get access to healthcare, tax forms, all kinds of things,” Interim Director Susan Currie said. “Even when the building was closed, we left [the WiFi] on, and people would camp outside with their computer to use the WiFi, especially when people were filing unemployment claims.”

In addition to sustaining these core services, the library

quickly oriented itself to the Zoom online video conferencing platform to organize virtual programs for its patrons. From April 2020 to December 2020, Youth Services offered 168 virtual programs to it’s youth library patrons. In the same year, Adult Services reached its older audience with 160 virtual program sessions ranging from bookclubs to author talks to poetry events.

Some other initiatives started by the directors during the pandemic included “book bundles”— termed “book binges” for adults. Patrons could fill out an online form and request a theme and reading level, and the librarians would collect between five and 10 books for them to pick up and take home. As a testament to the popularity of this service, from June 2020 to December 2020, TCPL librarians curated 1,302 book bundles for families.

The start of curbside delivery services coincided with the creation of book bundles, and according to Currie, this initiative helped to revive a sense of community that the pandemic had dampened through quarantine and social distancing requirements.

In her own statement, Collado said the decision to leave was not an easy one.

“This transition will be incredibly bittersweet, and this decision is among the most difficult I have ever made, one that I walked through with integrity and introspection, always holding close my very real love for Ithaca College and for this community,” she said.

County Legislature tackles economic recovery plan, hears public health update

A

mood of optimism filled the legislative chambers on July 6 as the Tompkins County Legislature gathered for its first official inperson meeting since the pandemic. The legislators used the occasion to discuss the county’s economic recovery strategy and consider the current state of the pandemic in the county.

At the outset of the meeting, Legislator Deborah Dawson took the opportunity to celebrate the return to in-person meetings and extended gratitude to all the individuals who helped virtually broadcast the meetings during the pandemic through YouTube livestreams and Zoom. Considering the benefits offered by online access, Dawson shared that there has been serious discussion about keeping committee and legislature meetings available online, however a final decision on the matter is still in the making.

“This has been a massive puzzle at times to try and figure out how to livestream and make sure that all of our meetings are available to the public,” she said. “But what we have learned is that for many of our meetings, we can accommodate our staff better by sometimes allowing them to Zoom in.”

Heather McDaniel, President of the Ithaca Area Economic Development, who joined virtually, gave a presentation about the Tompkins County Economic Recovery Strategy, outlining the eco-

nomic impacts of the pandemic and a projected county response.

She stressed that the formulation of the recovery strategy is the result of countless conversations with many individuals across the county, and that a main objective of the strategy is to use the experience of the pandemic as a source of innovation and opportunity.

“A number of us stakeholders spent a significant amount of time last year talking to other stakeholders from sector leaders to businesses to policy advocates, really trying to understand the new challenges and the new opportunities as a result of the pandemic,” McDaniel said.

McDaniel and her team organized the recovery strategy into three phases: response, stabilization and redevelopment and revitalization. She recounted the ensuing success of the first two phases— from mobilizing almost $710,000 to support 122 businesses at the beginning of the pandemic to offering customized support to over 200 businesses and implementing consumer confidence messaging campaigns.

The focus of her presentation then turned to the third phase: redevelopment and revitalization. This third phase consists of actions which attend specifically to targeted business sectors, the workforce, and infrastructure.

“We want to ensure that our economy recovers, and not only recovers, but comes back stronger and better than it ever was before,” McDaniel said.

“This is really meant to be a companion piece to the county wide economic development strategy, but really focusing on the new actions and new opportunities as a result of the pandemic.”

To cap off the presentation, McDaniel provided a sample of potential short term and long term initiatives in which the county could invest to achieve economic recovery. Many of

the proposed projects are concentrated in the city of Ithaca rather than the surrounding cities, and this disproportionate focus on the city concerned many of the legislators.

“I think you folks need to do everything you can to explain how these various projects that you’ve talked about are going to help benefit people in the rural areas,” Legislator Mike Lane said. “And not just because we’re building up the downtown area, and therefore that’s our county’s seat...but because the other rural areas are entitled to grow as well.”

Legislator Martha Robertson harbored similar concerns, but McDaniel ensured the legislators that these proposed initiatives were generated after intense deliberation with stakeholders across the county, and each project would have cross-cutting benefits.

“Investing in infrastructure in the city of Ithaca definitely benefits both the people that drive into the city of Ithaca to work every day, not only from Groton, but also from outside of the county,” she said. “...

The message here is that any actions that support economic recovery are good for our community and for our county.”

Legislator Leslie Schill supported McDaniel’s assessment that investment in the city generates benefits for the entire county, spurring broader economic recovery.

“An agglomeration in the economy — where we bring together new industry, we bring together infrastructure improvements, we bring together new housing opportunities — these things start to cluster,” she said. “They build upon themselves to create a better place, it attracts more business, more visits, more people who want to live in a community that has an outing and your economic and local needs, as well as jobs.”

The chamber conversation shifted from economic recovery to the current status of public health in the county.

Frank Kruppa, Tompkins County Health Department Public Health Director, virtually joined the meeting to give the legislators a COVID-19 update.

According to Kruppa, the county currently faces three active cases, and more than 66,000 residents have been

fully vaccinated. Even amid slowing vaccination rates all across the country, the number of vaccinated individuals in the county continues to rise, an achievement Kruppa attributed in part to the Public Health Ambassadors program launched during the pandemic.

Although the Health Department had formulated the idea for the program before the pandemic as a way to reduce health inequities in the county, they jump-started the program to help increase the vaccination rate around the county.

For the past two months, with vaccination rates slowing, four individuals have engaged in hundreds of hours of outreach work — talking with community leaders and at-risk communities about vaccine availability, supporting vaccine messaging campaigns, and promoting vaccination clinics.

Kruppa expressed the TCHD’s desire to extend this program beyond the pandemic, shifting from vaccine promotion to community focused projects and addressing county health disparities.

“We’re looking... to really reach into our community, our communities of color, our immigrant, our migrant worker communities, our mobile home parks where many of our low socioeconomic status individuals live, and to find out what their needs are,” Kruppa said. “...We want to better understand what those needs are and then to get information from them on how we can build programming to support those needs.”

In a period of just 16 months — spanning from before the pandemic to June 2021 — the views of the TCHD homepage spiked from 17,000 to 2.7 million. Kruppa hopes that the Health Department can leverage this increased visibility within the community to continue to meet the needs of the community.

“We really want to use this higher profile to get the word out about available services and issues surrounding those individuals struggling with...a lot of issues that need attention,” he said.

The legislators will convene again on July 20 at 5:30 p.m. in the legislative chambers.

Vonnegut: Stuck in time?

or 12 years Christa Núñez, originally from Michigan, and her husband, Pete, originally from the Dominican Republic via NYC, lived in Northern California.

“We lived in a community amongst the Redwoods, only 20 miles from the ocean and three hours from San Francisco.”

But as their children grew up and California was beset by droughts and wildfires, the Núñez family was ready to pull up stakes and find a community in which their dream would flourish.

“We want all children to have access to nature for free play in beautiful green spaces. During our years in California, we learned and talked and tried out our ideas, but we needed to find the right community. By the time we found Ithaca, we were ready to get started and break ground.”

In 2016 upon arrival Christa and Pete found a school for their children: “Chloe, now 12, Paxon, now 9 and Chananah, 3 have all savored the international student body at Belle Sherman School. Families from Finland, Nigeria, South Africa, Mexico, China, Belgium and Ecuador share their culture, language and foods.

Early on in this area Christa also found common ground and formed friendships with many like-minded program leaders—Healthy Food for All (Amie Hamlin), Youth Farm (Audrey Baker, Astrid Castillo and Katie Church), Groundswell (Natalie Hughes and Rachel Bezner Kerr), Cherry Street Project (Melissa Madden), ICSD (Luvelle Brown), Southside Community Center (Nia Nunn), Black Hands Universal (Harry Smith), Cornell University (Scott Peters, Anu Rangarajan, Jack Elliot, Janet Loebach, Graham Savio), Social Ventures (Jeff Furman), and Children’s Reading Connection (Brígid Hubberman) to name a few close colleagues.

019 marked the 50th anniversary of “Slaughterhouse-Five,” the best-selling novel by Kurt Vonnegut, considered a classic of its time for its groundbreaking genre-bending and countercultural leanings.

The New York Times celebrated the date with tributes and reminiscences. Surprisingly quiet here in Ithaca was Cornell University, where Vonnegut studied as an undergraduate and wrote for the school newspaper.

Or maybe not so surprisingly, for a couple of reasons.

First, Vonnegut didn’t graduate.

He didn’t do well at Cornell. While thriving at the Daily Sun, he flunked much of his coursework. He was put on academic probation in his sophomore year and subsequently dropped out.

Second, Vonnegut’s style is simple in syntax and playful in form, generally not qualities for university praise.

With the success of “SlaughterhouseFive” media reviewers could not help but note his popularity, and found artistry in his work.

But the ivory towers are harder to reach. Vonnegut didn’t make it as some contemporaries did.

While critics and readers valued Vonnegut’s broad humor in the face of despair, academics preferred the more cryptic, morbid drollness of Samuel Beckett. Where Vonnegut’s direct moral conflicts pinpointed disarray and madness among us, scholars favored Thomas Pynchon, whose labyrinthian escapades deepened those problems rather than seek a way out. When Vonnegut delved into science fiction, as he did freely, he was criticized as cartoonish and unserious, especially compared with the more recondite “magic realism” of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Jorge Luis Borges.

These intellectual predilections are not without merit. Vonnegut readily acknowledged his lack of literary pedigree, which he considered a consequence of his own insufficient study.

But with “Slaughterhouse-Five,” after years of near anonymity, Vonnegut became a near cult figure. His old books were revisited and new work eagerly sought.

Academic standing still largely eludes him. A place in popular literary history doesn’t. But what about the spot in between, continuing relevance?

Vonnegut died in 2007. Even his biggest fans would acknowledge that his best work was far behind him. The last of his 14 novels was published in 1997.

The popularity of “SlaughterhouseFive” owed much to its time. It was published at the height of the war in Vietnam.

Its title derives from the destruction of

the German city of Dresden by Allied firebombing toward the end of World War Two, a militarily illicit attack on a non-strategic target which killed untold numbers of innocents and Vonnegut survived as a prisoner of war, taking refuge in an underground chamber in a slaughterhouse.

The book has no aspects of memoir, despite a lead character of roughly Vonnegut’s age and experience. It is not a book of historical fiction. Despite its realistic setting, it is barely real. It involves time travel, parallel lives, and other subjects of unfettered, even wild fantasy (the protagonist, Billy Pilgrim, is abducted by aliens and becomes “unstuck in time,” allowing him to see beyond mortal limits). But at its heart, for all its extravagances and side trips, it is a forthright examination of death and suffering, primarily as caused by human folly and its most horrific expression, war.

“Slaughterhouse-Five” was embraced by youth facing such horror in Vietnam.

The book’s imagination was far-flung, but at a fevered time suggested that the real hallucinations were coming from the government and media. Many people knew it, but Vonnegut was foremost in expressing it.

On the book’s anniversary I re-read it, earnestly wanting to be awed by it now as I was then, as the New York Times still seems to be.

Alas, I wasn’t. I found some of the contrivances hard to take rather than supple or inspired. I wondered if, ironically, Vonnegut himself was now stuck in time.

But I’m pleased to say I didn’t quit.

With the time provided by the pandemic this past year, I went back further to some of Vonnegut’s earlier books. (Our local library seems to honor Vonnegut’s legacy more than his old school does, with a good number of his books on its shelves.)

They showed literary quality that seemed timeless to me.

Those earlier works were more conventional, and maybe it’s disappointing to think that novelty in novels might limit successful longevity. But it was rewarding to see what I then surmised, a continuum in Vonnegut’s work of fundamental fearlessness in imagination and scope, braced by humor, humility and humanity.

Vonnegut was humble both as a man and an artist, but iconoclastic always. In “Cat’s Cradle,” from 1963, he creates a character on a remote island who forms a successful religion based on writings he explicitly tells his followers are bald lies to make them happy. In the final sentence of his writings the character wishes a death for himself “lying on my back, grinning horribly, and thumbing my nose at You Know Who.”

Time for some more improvements on Green St. The parking garage is due for demolition.I’m pretty sure that most of you would not understand someone feeling sentimental about a parking garage, but I’m sad to see it go. Come with me down memory lane. It’s 1977, a beautiful late afternoon on a summer day, maybe July, the sun is just beginning to head for sunset. I’m 16 and my boyfriend, a junior at the Ag. School and I have come to see the ZoboFunn Band play. They are a popular local band to an eclectic group of people (hippies) who very much enjoy the free form style of dancing their music inspires.I’ve never seen anything like this.

Dancing to me means couples together doing learned steps. I had never learned so, I “couldn’t” dance. I looked at Bob and with a large, wistful sigh said,”I wish I could dance.” At 23 he was so much more confident than I was and replied, “Why can’t you? Just look, you can dance. Go give it a try.” So, on the roof of the pretty new Green Street parking garage I put on my dancing shoes for the very first time.

I’ve still never learned couples dancing, but “Zobo dancing” has been a great joy to me all these years.

VIOLENCE IN ITHACA Are violent crimes really on the rise? And what’s behind violence anyway?

I

t’s been a common refrain in Ithaca lately: Violent crime is increasing.

Seemingly every other week, Ithaca Police Department (IPD) is releasing information about a shooting or a stabbing. And statistics provided by IPD do seem to back it up. This has spurred discussions about police reform, how to stem crime and the Reimagining Public Safety efforts among community leaders.

We used the following charges to examine changes in crime patterns: rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, kidnapping, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief and simple assault.

We left out charges like embezzlement, driving under the influence and forgery.

Violent crimes are charges that fall under the four main categories of aggravated assault, robbery, homicide and rape.

In 2020, there were combined 1,999 charges made in the above categories, up from 1,401 in 2019 and 1,494 in 2018.

However, though there were more than 500 increased charges of violent crime from 2019 to 2020, it’s important to note where the biggest jumps were. Combined, there were 1,195 charges of robbery, burglary and larceny. That’s more than a 350 charge increase from 2019 when it was 817 and 2018 when it was 841. Put into context of 2020, a year of economic instability, soaring unemployment rates and an uncertain future, it’s not all that surprising to see a rise in crimes of desperation.

And while there are a handful of charges that see eyebrow-raising jumps from 2019

to 2020 in IPD’s statistics, the numbers aren’t too far from 2018. For instance, rape charges jumped from five to 12 from 2019 to 2020, but there were also 12 in 2018. A similar trend occured with kidnapping — there were nine in 2020 compared to three in 2019, but there were eight in 2018.

Aside from robbery, burglary and larceny, there were alarming jumps in criminal possession of a weapon charges and aggravated assault charges. There were 21 criminal possession charges in 2020, up from five in 2019 and three in 2018, indicating an upward trend. Additionally, there was a

large jump in aggravated assault charges: 52 in 2020, compared to 27 in 2019 and 38 in 2018. It is important to note that IPD statistics don’t differentiate between domestic assault and random assault, so it’s unclear whether or not the fact some people were stuck home with their abusers in 2020 could play into the increase.

Statistics from 2021 were not yet able to be made available, but the number of press releases regarding violent crime have doubled in 2021 compared to 2020. However, without those statistics it’s impossible to know whether IPD has just sent out more press releases to call out attention to violent crime or if the numbers of violent crime are actually higher.

Ithaca’s Police Benevolent Association recently began the campaign “Ithaca 4 For Safety” which claims violent crime is “skyrocketing” in Ithaca, and said the campaign was designed to “address the dangerous

rise in shootings, assaults and armed, weaponized crime in our city.”

Earlier this month, the Tompkins County Office of Human Rights held a panel with community leaders about violence in Ithaca where they looked at what violence really means, what influences it and the perceptions around it.

According to Travis Brooks, the deputy director at Greater Ithaca Activity Center (GIAC), there were upticks in violence caused by the pandemic, systemic and equity issues and racism.

Dr. Sabrina Karim, an assistant professor of government at Cornell University, said most criminal violence is related to structural violence. She described structural violence as the systemic ways in which social structures harm or otherwise disadvantage individuals.

“It’s subtle or invisible, and often no one person can be held responsible,” she said.

“So things like racism, elitism, sexism, ethnocentrism, adultism even […] And when you think of these kinds of structures that exist it’s pretty easy to see the connection to violence.”

She gave the example of youth that lack resources due to systemic racism which leads to fewer opportunities for jobs. This means they have less access to healthcare, legal protections and safe housing, and things like this may lead to more crimes of desperation.

Richard Rivera, who works with Opportunities, Alternatives and Resources (OAR) and the Re-Entry Program, pointed out how racialized the idea of violence is in America.

“When you say terms like inner city or impoverished areas, this is the place [Black and brown people] are relegated to and because we’re relegated here, we’re painted as more violent,” he said. “Violence comes out of a history of systemic racism. It’s perceived as Black and brown violence because violence has been pressed on them.”

Rivera also cautioned against throwing police reform ideas out the window and trying to “police our way out of it.”

“There’s a perceived fear that violence is coming to Ithaca, and what happens is the whole south side, West Village, and where Black and brown folks tend to congregate is being perceived as the most violent,” he said.

He mentioned that a Cornell professor did a study that found that when there’s an uptick in violence it’s generally caused by a few individuals acting out.

“The uptick in crime is just a few bad actors,” he said. “There’s a lot of poverty, a lot

Rivera also mentioned that police in Ithaca and around the country have said the call for police reform has demoralized police.

“They’re not wanting to do their job,” he said. “If that’s true, then they’re contributing to the uptick in violence.”

Whether or not having more police actually reduces violent crime, the data is, unsurprisingly, complicated. According to studies done by NPR, having more police around in areas where violent crime is prevalent does reduce that violence. And though the data shows that fewer people were arrested for violent crime, more people were arrested for lower-level offenses such as public intoxication or disorder-

He said he believes the ideas that police can act without violating the civil rights of individuals and practice effective policing should not be mutually exclusive.

“The narratives are conflicted and misinforming the audience and that’s how we’re going to end up back at ‘tough on crime’ and we’re going to incarcerate more people,” he said.

At IPD, there have been some concerns about staffing levels. At a recent City Administration Committee meeting, City Clerk Julie Holcomb said that IPD would likely be unable to provide security for festivals due to too few officers. Additionally, the PBA claims that there are about half the number of sworn officers working per shift compared to five years ago, and that the number of trained sworn officers in total has been reduced by 20%.

However, speaking with a retired New York Police Department official, USA Today found that crime in New York City continued to decrease as the number of police decreased. So it’s safe to say that it’s not necessarily about the number of officers, but how the officers are deployed and behaving.

So to Rivera’s point, more police aren’t necessarily the answer to the uptick in violent crime.

“We should try to fix the problem instead of incarcerating our way out of it and militarizing our police,” River said. “Going back to those systems that have failed over and over again is not going to solve our problems. We can be terrified. We can be J u ly

horrified. But we must also be reasonable, rational and caring. Human beings are involved on all sides.”

Brooks, who works with youth in the community, said he thinks a big part of reducing crime is reframing what healthy masculinity looks like to boys and young men.

“There’s a lot of young men brought up in toxic masculinity,” he said. “A healthy man’s masculinity is directly related to reducing violence against women.”

The panel also addressed the effect of trauma and how, when untreated, it directly relates to people perpetrating violence.

“I’ve never met anyone suffering who does not have a history of trauma,” Rivera said. “Racism itself is traumatic — being excluded, being dehumanized, being marked as different. Just because of hair, skin and bones. It’s problematic. It’s trauma. And trauma does inform how we understand violence.”

Professor Raza Rumi Ahmad from the Park Center for Independent Media agreed, and said there’s evidence that points to how trauma causes cyclical patterns.

“I would step further and ask what do we have to counter that in our communities? There are so few opportunities for families who have gone through traumatic incidents,” he said. “It’s a matter of public policy and how the government is going to address this issue.”

Brooks added that this generation is growing up seeing videos on social media of Black men being killed “two or three times a week.”

“This is what they see, and some of them don’t have anyone to go and talk to about what they see,” he said. “Or they’re misguided by falsehood heroes who give them the wrong information and wrong advice on how to deal with this. […] If folks don’t see their lives as having value, then how do they value others who look like them? […] Our mental health system is broken.

Some of these folks need services they don’t get, and I think trauma plays a huge role in dealing with violence.”

So as it turns out, violence is complicated — it’s rarely people being violent just for the sake of causing harm. It’s informed by economic struggles, by systemic challenges, by racism, by trauma, by the failing of other support systems. And while adding more police may act as a Band-Aid to bring violent crime statistics down, a more holistic approach is more likely to solve the problem at its root.

As I watched 53 kids learning how to throw, catch and hit at the Total Baseball Summer Camp, I wondered if they would ever know how much baseball knowledge surrounded them. Tony Prudence (Ithaca High alum and former Ithaca College player) is the top dog at Total Baseball, and he called in some big hitters for this year’s camp (held at The Rink/The Field in Lansing).

Seeing Joe Hopkins took me way back.

Joe and I played against one another in high school in the 1970s, and the now 60-something former Little Red star looks like he could still steal a base.

Ryan Stevens was once the youngest coach in pro baseball (the Cactus League in Texas), and he is now the head man at Wells College after previously running the show at TC3.

Wells is well-represented, as Tyler Mattoon —Stevens’ assistant coach and a former standout at Lansing and TC3 — is helping out at the camp, as is head softball coach Taylor Policay. Taylor was a tough out and a stellar defensive player at Lansing,

hit a few bombs for TC3, and took the Wells job just before the pandemic hit.

Stevens laughed when I asked him if it was a little too early to initiate recruiting efforts, and he said, “I do pay attention. It was only a few years ago that I was watching kids this age and now some of them are really good baseball players. Zack Sperger is now a junior shortstop at Lansing, and James Cronin just graduated from St. Lawrence.”

Ryan added, “It’s also good for them to get around kids from other schools, and meet the players from other teams early on.”

Ryan knows how long the road is from a developmental camp to the Majors, but he has seen the entire spectrum. When asked about his former players making that journey, he said, “I have had two guys make it to the Bigs, and several more (like current Bomber coach Dave Valesente) make it to Affiliated ball (Valesente played in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization).

While some of the coaches took a break to eat their own lunch, Fazio flitted about the room like a water bug, engaging the kids that looked like they needed it the most. He complimented them on their earlier efforts, told them how happy he was to see them there, and shared he had high hopes for them. He looked like a rookie coach at his first camp.

Prudence — who has been connected with Faz for most of his life — smiled and said, “Look at him. He’s like a kid. A 76 year-old kid. He really loves baseball, and he loves these kids.”

hen Ithaca native Joshua Esnard pitched his company Cut Buddy to the Shark Tank, investor Damon John decided to

take a bite.

Since securing the deal in 2017, Esnard’s do-it-yourself hair tool product has taken off and thrived, even through the pandemic. The entrepreneur’s journey to success, however, began in Ithaca, long before Shark Tank entered the story.

The inspiration for the product came from his dad, who Esnard considers an “old school DIY type of guy.” This mentality even applied itself to haircuts in the Esnard household. Because his father would not take him to see a barber, Esnard began cutting his own hair, but found the process difficult, frustrating and unfavorable to his appearance.

“I realized the hardest part about cutting my hair was actually getting the perfect curves and hairline,” he said. “I ended up pushing my hairline back, giving myself bald spots all over my head, looking like a cheetah basically.”

ITHACA NATIVE’S CUT BUDDY INVENTION HAS GROWN WITH WILD SUCCESS AFTER A SUCCESSFUL BID ON SHARK TANK AND THE RISE IN DIY HAIRCUTS

By Faith Fisher Channeling his father’s DIY mentality, 13-year-old Esnard started cutting up templates from detergent bottles, folders, and cardboard to make curves that fit the contours of his hairline. While nervously wielding the clipper, he would put the templates against his head as a stencil and guard to give him a clean hairline.

Although at the time he “didn’t think it was anything that was revolutionary,” those templates he scraped together have since evolved into the successful enterprise Cut Buddy.

For several years, Esnard completely forgot about the product he crafted to cut his hair. Then, one day while moving into a new rental place in South Florida, Esnard decided to give up on a tedious chore. His girlfriend at the time told him “you never finish what you start” — this message changed the entire trajectory of his path as an entrepreneur.

“It was like lightning bolts,” he said. “I really internalized it as, you know, I’m not showing up for my life.”

This message prompted him to dig up his old inventor’s book he used as a kid.

When he opened the first page, he saw

the design of the Cut Buddy hair shaping product. He immediately patented the product and manufactured a few thousand units.

He later moved into a condo with some childhood friends who joined the Cut Buddy team. His partners Pima Mbwana and Alex Kresovich hail from Ithaca, and although not raised in Ithaca, Jason Battle has a connection to the city as a graduate of Cornell University. Even with all hands on deck, business was off to a slow start.

Discouraged by a lackluster three to five sales per day, Esnard was ready to give up.

An email from a disabled veteran, however, revived Esnard’s spirits and animated him to continue pursuing the business.

The individual shared with Esnard that his hands shake due to his medication, and because of that, he struggles to hold clippers to steadily cut his hair. Cut Buddy helped him overcome that struggle, and the veteran thanked him for creating a product that gives individuals with disabilities the opportunity to have nice haircuts.

“During that time, I was ready to give up and let go but I realized that this prod-

uct wasn’t really to make money,” Esnard said. “It was now to help people with their confidence and their first impression and get over hurdles with dexterity.”

He dove into reviews on Amazon and unbeknownst to him, the product was reaching — and more importantly helping — unexpected audiences. Sifting through the reviews, he discovered “mothers with autistic children, broke college students and barbers in training” benefiting from the product.

Upon realizing that his product had a tangible impact, Esnard quickly dispelled himself of any inclination to quit.

Rather, understanding the ways in which the product improved the lives of others inspired him to revamp his business approach. Using the reviews, he understood which demographic groups were buying his products. He then used this information to reach out to influencers who could help market it to those potential buyers.

With the help of these influencers, the business rapidly gained popularity.

Cayuga Lake National Bank comes to Lansing LOCAL KELLY GAVITT WILL MANAGE THE TOWN’S FIRST INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL INSTITUTION

ansing’s first independent financial institution should be opening this month with the Cayuga Lake National Bank expanding its operations to the area.

Located in Cayuga County, the Cayuga Lake National Bank was founded in 1864 (originally called the First National Bank of Aurora) by Henry Wells and Edwin Barber Morgan, who also founded Wells, Fargo and Co. (known as Wells Fargo today). The name of the bank changed in 1976, and so did the location of its headquarters (from Aurora to Union Springs).

Cayuga Lake National Bank is the only independent commercial bank in Cayuga County.

Leading the Lansing branch, which will be located at 3077 North Triphammer Road, will be Lansing native Kelly Gavitt, who currently works as a Mortgage Loan Officer at the Union Springs branch.

“I was super excited,” Gavitt said of when she learned she would be the manager of the Lansing branch. “I was honored that they thought enough of my abilities to be able to run that.”

In 2019, the bank began to plan out a future expansion somewhere in the region within a 45-mile radius. It whittled it down to three areas, one being Lansing, which President and CEO Kelly Wade said was the bank’s “predominant option.”

“When you looked at the idea that there’s not a brick and mortar financial institution in the area, there’s a lot of revitalization, there’s a lot of houses, there’s some businesses going into the area, [TST] BOCES, there’s a lot going on in that area and for us to be able to be a part of that community to bring who we are – we’re not looking to put up a branch on every corner; we really wanted to be mindful of the community that we go into to make sure that we can serve them and that we can bring who we are to that community,” Wade said.

Wade said it was important for the bank to put someone familiar with the Lansing community in charge of the new branch.

“We like to think that we’re easy to work with,” she said. “We are very personal; we know our customers. We know them by their voice, when they come into the branch, and I think that’s one of the

reasons that having Kelly be the branch manager made so much sense for us. Kelly is from the community, and we really wanted to continue that feeling of a hometown bank.”

The Lansing branch plans to offer consumer mortgages, commercial lending and various deposit accounts.

“We’re bringing in new technology,” Gavitt said. “We will have two ITM’s [Interactive Teller Machines] which will be the drive-up services, which are pretty exciting. There’s none around this area, so we’ll be the first to put them out to the public to learn on how to use them.

You can use it as an ATM and you can … pick to have a teller on the other end, so it would be a video conversation back and forth with an employee. Everything is done there at the machine. There’s no Pneumatic tube coming into the bank.”

The building itself, which was designed

by Ithaca architect George W. Breuhaus and D Squared Inc., gives off a cozy feel with the exposed Woodhouse timber frame and fireplace on the inside.

“We’re really excited to bring a warm structure that’s inviting to show our commitment to the community, rather than having your traditional-looking branch … that was something that was really important to us,” Wade said.

With the opening of the new branch approaching, Gavitt said she is looking forward to “being able to provide the Lansing community with great banking options.”

Shelf-stable CORNELL TECHNOLOGY ALLOWS FOR MORE EQUITABLE ACCESS TO PERISHABLE FOODS

arther Farms is a food tech startup founded by Vipul Saran and Mike Annunziata that uses innovative technology created at Cornell for a new means of food processing.

Vipul Saran and Mike Annunziata, 2017 Cornell graduates, created Farther Farms in 2017 when they were working in Cornell’s Elab, a Cornell startup program.

What Farther Farms and Cornell’s new technology does is process perishable foods, such as french fries, with freezing and refrigeration. Essentially, it’s a sterilization technology that produces shelfstable foods.

Cornell’s Center for Technology Licensing (CTL) licensed this new technology to Farther Farms to further this new means of food production. Farther Farms believes this new way of food production is the next step in food transformation.

munity College president Dr. Orinthia Montague announced in a campus-wide email that she will be leaving the school on Aug. 23. She has been offered the president position at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tennessee, pending approval from the Tennessee Board of Regents.

“This is a bittersweet announcement for me,” Montague wrote. “Leaving is not an easy decision. I came to TC3 in 2017 as a new president and have grown both personally and professionally during my time at the college […] But when I was approached to apply for this opportunity, I explored the possibilities, and it became clear that this was an opportunity I could not pass up.”

The Tennessee Board of Regents will hold a special meeting on July 27 to vote on the appointment of Montague. She was recommended after being selected by a search advisory committee. The process included campus visits, forums with campus groups and the public, and final interviews with feedback from those communities.

The TC3 Board of Trustees held a special meeting on July 12 to discuss a plan to continue forward during the transition, and more information is expected to be

available publicly shortly.

Montague has been the president at TC3 since 2017. The statement from Volunteer State Community College cites her accomplishments as reversing a decade-long enrollment decline, establishing new community partnerships, leading the construction of a new childcare center, helping secure over $3 million in philanthropic donations, developing improved communications initiatives with campus constituencies and serving on Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s New York Re-opening Advisory Task Force.

“I’m delighted to recommend Dr. Montague to the Board of Regents,” board chancellor Flora Tydings said. “[…] I believe that Dr. Montague was particularly well received during the campus forums and that her broad range of college leadership experience and work with students and her vision will help her lead Vol State to even higher levels in serving its students and its communities.”

“We make quality food acceptable everywhere,” Schmitt said, “We are able to have the potential to extend products such as our shelf-stable french fries that started going into new markets where french fries aren’t usually consumed because there isn’t a frozen supply chain.”

Farther Farms plans to extend their business beyond the United States and bring their business more international.

“We are pretty open to the possibilities right now,” Schmitt said.

Syed Rizvi is a professor of food science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell and was an advisor to Saran at the university.

Rizvi inspired this new means of technology and suggested the topic to Saran.

Rizvi thought it would be a great way to use this technology as a business plan and that’s exactly what Rizvi and Saran did.

“At that point when we started it [Cornell’s technology], we didn’t know that it would lead to a company,” Rizvi said.

The product has been sampled globally, and this technology can be useful in countries where there is a working, cold supply chain or for countries that suffer a loss of fruits and vegetables because they lack a cold supply chain.

Syed said that this technology should be incorporated in and outside of the United States because it is environmentally helpful.

“I think it should be used everywhere,” Syed said.

As of now, Farther Farms fries are being sold at Luna Inspired Street Food in Ithaca, The Hideaway and Radio Social in Rochester, and Endico Potatoes in the New York City Metro area.

Farther Farms is in the works of expanding outside of these areas, but as of now individuals can only try these new innovative fries while dining in New York.

There are other products that this technology works well with, such as fruits and vegetables, and Schmitt said that the fries are only the beginning to this new means of food technology.

“We’re always working on our products,” Schmitt said, “Right now, we are working very diligently on extending the shelf-life of our state product.”

Schmitt said Farther Farms is currently planning on expanding and that several works are in the process. “[Farther Farms] has a great sense of empowerment here for what’s in the company and how we try to bring value to our customers and our supply chain,” Schmitt said.

Farther Farms strives to use this technology as the next step in food production because the cold chain is expensive and limited globally.

Rizvi agrees that Farther Farms will continue to expand and help the food chain internationally.

“I believe this is a novel technology in the right direction,” Rizvi said. “I think this technology will be used in the future.”

During the wave of this success, ABC’s Shark Tank reached out to the entrepreneur. Esnard jumped on the opportunity to pitch his idea before the potential investors on the show and went in eager to clinch a deal.

After a successful pitch, Esnard gained a new business partner — Damon John, someone he had always admired.

According to Esnard, the decision to scale the company goes all the way back to the email of gratitude he received from the veteran with dexterity issues.

Whether it was the cold winters that kept him at home, the professional and educational opportunities offered to him by the school system, or the ability to go into the woods and build ramps and forts, living in Ithaca enlivened his entrepreneurial spirit Most importantly, his experience growing up in Ithaca molded the compassionate mindset he has carried with him throughout his long and bumpy journey with Cut Buddy.

“The acceptance of people in Ithaca and its liberal mindset really opened my eyes,” Esnard said. “It let me put trying to help people at the forefront while putting aside the whole thing about making money.”

isa Duggan is currently a professor of social and cultural analysis at New York University, and was the former president of the American Studies Association during 2014-15. She is also the author of a number of previous books about gender, cultural politics, and sexuality, and has a new book out titled “Mean Girl: Ayn Rand and the Culture of Greed,” (University of California Press).

Recently the Ithaca Times interviewed Duggan via email on the unsettling messages in Rand’s work. Duggan gives a sense of context to the Neoliberalism that Rand championed during her lifetime and examines Rand’s growth as a popular writer, a political/ philosophical cult leader, and a public figure.

Ithaca Times: As someone who has spent time reading Ayn Rand and researching her background — talk about why you decided to write about Rand in a concise way with your recent book?

Lisa Duggan: Ayn Rand has had a huge impact on our current political culture. I want to write about how and why that happened.

IT: How did Rand arrive at her personal philosophy known as Objectivism?

LD: She was influenced by her experience in Russia, where she was born. In the wake of the Bolshevik Revolution, she developed a commitment to the principles and practice of Western “civilization” and capitalism; she built her philosophy around that commitment.

IT: Can you talk about the interest by people in Objectivism and how it seems to oppose Christian values of helping and loving ones’ neighbors?

LD: Very few people are committed to Objectivism.

IT: Beyond Objectivism, why do you think Rand still affects so much of our culture and seems to give a feeling of assurance in Neoliberal politics and global capitalism? Can you talk about the “greed is good” refrain, which is the key to Objectivism, and how former Reserve Chair Alan Greenspan was influenced and seemed to shape banking and monetary policy based on Rand’s philosophy?

LD: Greenspan was part of Rand’s inner circle, and he advanced Neoliberal policies of deregulation. But Rand herself was not a Neoliberal. She died in 1982 just as Neoliberalism was becoming state policy in the US and UK. But her advocacy of inequality, her contempt and indifference for those without wealth and power, infused the zeitgeist of Neoliberal capitalism.

IT: There is a slow change occurring with current organizing of global racial movements, feminists’ efforts, environmental groups working to protect the planet, and the anti-Neoliberal left. What is the fundamental flaw people are discovering in Ayn Rand’s Objectivist philosophy?

LD: People don’t generally read Objectivist philosophy, they read Rand’s fiction and are affected by the feelings, fantasies and desires that she sketches.

The cruelty and greed that she advocates are anathema to the left, or to any social movement committed to equality, empathy and solidarity.

A little abstract

Three works by by gallery member Ethel Vrana

State of the Art Gallery hosts a single-artist exhibition featuring the works of Ethel Vrana.

By Ar thur W hit m an It’s good to see solo shows at the State of the Art Gallery again. After seeing through a couple pandemic-inspired seasons of forgettable “virtual exhibitions” and seemingly endless group shows in search of a purpose, it is rewarding to view the recent work of a single artist in person and in some depth.

Ethel Vrana is one of the grand old women and men of the well-established downtown cooperative. Her new show, “Emergence” (through Aug. 1), highlights the quirky, often highly-nuanced abstract oils for which she has become best known in recent years. Completed during the COVID-19 pandemic, it also incorporates playful divagations into imagery as well as a series of brand new print collages.

This is one of the most scattered presentations of her new work that I have seen. But at least a few pieces here breathe genuine life into what some might consider the exhausted genre of abstraction.

A pair of larger (36”x36”) square canvases, “Everlasting Brightness #2” and “Deep Blue” are like day and night. As with many of Vrana’s most memorable abstractions, she forms loose grids of squares. Both recall the idealized geometry of Mondrian and other past masters as well as the more informal topography of the city.

“Brightness” is the more immediate of the two. Sonorous notes of color punctuate the pale sweet fogs of color polluting the surrounding whiteness. The piece is evocative and lovely but, to my mind, serves primarily as a foil for it’s nocturnal cousin.

Saturated blocks of color punctuate the muted, blackened expanse of “Deep Blue”: red, blue, yellow, teal, white. Rods and horseshoes suggest objects or — even — personages, animate. Like Klee, an obvious lodestar for Vrana’s best work, the piece combines formal rigor and human comedy. Both pieces, but especially the

latter, should have been given greater pride of place here.

“Stash,” another 36-inch square canvas, is also a key painting here. Contoured in delicate black lines against a field of pale purple, is a surreal, semi-abstract conglomeration of lighting fixtures, lampshades, and lumps — strung together with black wire that leads the gaze along it’s serpentine path. Once again, the piece reveals Vrana as an able student of classic modern art.

A handful of pieces exhibit what might be considered a more contemporary sensibility in their sly merger of abstract shapes and passages with bits of more overt, often cartoonish imagery. Pieces such as “Still Life with Nest” and “Child’s Play” are cute but not too cloying.

“Olivia” makes an easy joke at the expense of abstract painting: seen from behind, a silhouetted gnome daubs childlike scrawls on an otherwise empty white field. The conceit is a well-worn one but Vrana pulls it off.

Other pieces here can only be described as kitsch — perhaps intentional, perhaps not. Rows of sundown colors stripe the large “Eventide,” dappled with dark silhouette trees in a kind of stage-set effect.

With it’s looming red sun, wiry potted plant, and little abstract shapes, “Rising” is more bearable but suggests a hobbybook approach to “modern art.”

Vrana attended an artists’ retreat this past month in the Hudson Valley: her first opportunity to work outside her studio since the beginning of the pandemic.

There she learned a new technique to her gel plate printing process, which she has used here in three “Emergence” collages, paper on wood. Crisp contrasts of color and patterns — sometimes vaguely botanical or fungal — define these lively, inspirited pieces.

Vrana’s recent turn to abstraction still feels difficult to place. There’s something very mainstream State of the Art about “going abstract,” particularly at an advanced age. I sense that whatever is most distinctive and interesting about her current work is not being seen as well as it could be here.

The hanging of exhibitions at the SoAG is invariably professional and effective as a basic means of presenting the work. One wishes, particularly on the occasion of a solo show, that the hanging committee might bend a bit from the mechanistic, get-the-visitor-to-do-a-circuit-of-theroom style that has defined COVID-era curating at the cooperative. There’s a lot to be said for more varied spacing, drawing connections between non-adjacent works, favoring some pieces over others — even for a bit of constructive disorder.

BVC checks out the latest “Fast & Furious” sequel and a dark comic indie

wenty years ago, the “Fast & Furious” movies used to be about street racing.

Eight flicks and a spin-off later, this franchise has gotten so crazy with a huge, ever-expanding supporting cast and soap opera styled storytelling, you half expect Vin Diesel and the “F&F” crew to discover teleportation or werewolves or maybe even bring back the late Paul Walker as a holographic robot. I’ve enjoyed the movies but they really steer in one eyeball and burn rubber out the other. I can’t think of another movie series where I’ve retained so little of the mythology.

Not for nothing, but I re-watched the whole magilla to prep for the newest chapter, and I had completely forgotten that Gal Gadot and Helen Mirren are series regulars.

“F9” (Universal Pictures-Original Film-One Race Films-Perfect Storm Entertainment-Roth/Kirschenbaum Films-China Film Co., 2021, 145 min.) is a bloated two-and-a-half-hour lemon that spends at least a half-hour too long on the freeway. Endless rounds of pummeling action alternate with a murky plot involving Diesel and a long-lost brother played by John Cena, and endless rounds of flashback scenes that quickly grow tiresome.

Everyone’s a cartoon character as impervious to death as your average Looney Tune.

It’s all too loud, too dumb and too much.

And they can check off space travel as a plot device, which isn’t as fun as you might think it would be. Since Diesel has said there will be at least one more movie to come, I guess that means teleportation and werewolves.

“F9” marks the fifth installment from director Justin Lin, who’s done great work on “Community” and “Star Trek Beyond.”

Starting with “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” (2006), Lin has cranked out five “F&F” movies in the last 15 years; I think his “Fast Five” (2011) is the pick of the litter. I’d also say it’s time for Lin – and us – to move on to something else.

Something much more exciting and entertaining is happening at Cinemapolis through July 15.

In “First Date” (Magnet Releasing-Visit Films-Cinexus Pictures, 2021, 103 min.), this shy, sweet kid named Mike (Tyson Brown) finally gets up the nerve to ask his longtime crush Kelsey (Shelby Duclos) on a date. She says yes, he realizes he needs a car, and “First Date” turns into a “one crazy night” movie that deserves comparison with Martin Scorsese’s “After Hours” (1985).

Tyson Brown in First Date (2021)

and Darren Knapp; these guys are clearly fans of Edgar Wright and the Coens, and “First Night” has that exuberant energy that comes from the enthusiasm of making cinema for the first time. The story pulses with its own nightmare logic as the simple act of buying a car leads to one catastrophe after another, populated by more offbeat criminal and cop types than your average Elmore Leonard novel or Quentin Tarantino picture. (And when you’re done watching “First Date,” check out Tarantino’s novel based on “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” – it’s mighty fine storytelling.)

There’s something really inspiring about a crew of newbies putting it out there and taking their shot. Tyson Brown is a comedically skilled reactor to all the chaotic crime beats in the film, and there’s a particularly savage, sweet plot twist at the halfway point that I did not see coming.

he 84-year-old Jorge Luis Borges was an elegant man, possessed of extraordinary energy. Nonetheless, after nearly two hours of speaking and replying to questions, the author was growing weary. Even he was subject to the laws of physical reality. I’d been alerted by Anna Geske, the Director of Cornell’s Council on the Creative and Performing Arts, who noted, “At Harvard last week, Borges had to cancel his appearances scheduled for the day after his lecture and reading, due to exhaustion.”

A “standing room only” audience of about 500 students, faculty and others squeezed into Cornell’s Uris Auditorium and challenged the legendary Argentine fabulist, poet and former librarian with questions like, “Do you think writing should move people to act or to dream?”

“Act,” replied Borges, whose job as a librarian had been terminated by the Argentine dictator; Juan Peron then offered 14–20 ,

the sole supporter of his family a position as a chicken inspector, which he refused.

“But, because I’m a coward, I would just as soon dream.”

The next question came from a young woman with short black hair, who was wearing a black leather jacket. “How did you respond to Peron offering you a job inspecting chickens?”

“I was insulted, of course, but I put aside my feelings and focused my mind on writing my poetry and stories,” Borges replied.

I maneuvered myself through the group of people sitting on the floor around the podium. “Mr. Borges,” I said, leaning close to his ear, “you can stop anytime.”

“No,” he said. Then, after a pause, he smiled, saying ,”I will take one more.” He acknowledged a woman with long red hair and a blue serape.

“How do you determine if something is a dream,” she asked.

“Everything is a form of acting. For all you know, your whole life is a dream,” Borges replied, adding, “Right now the dream I’m having is a happy one, the dream of being in America, of being ringed in by friends.”

As the crowd filtered out of Uris Hall, I asked Borges, “Would you be able to join me for a local access tv interview tomorrow?”

“Anna informed me about this. I will be glad to meet you at noon. She can tell you where I’ll be,” Borges said.

With the help of a ride provided by the campus police, we were seated in the basement “studio” of the Tompkins County Library before 12:30 p.m. Terry Harbin, the library’s top technician, made sure that the mics were properly in place and the sound tests indicated we were good to go.

“What led you to become a writer?” I asked.

“My father was a teacher, and he taught me about those internal doubts we call philosophy. He taught me about idealists, about solipsists, about a single dreamer in the whole scheme of things... Poetry came to me through English. My father was always intoning Swinburne, Shelley, Shakespeare,” Borges said.

“It’d be intriguing to hear more about others in your family,” I said.

“Most of them were soldiers in the war of Paraguay and the war for independence, and in small, but very real, wars. Then they fought the [Native Americans] in what you called the ‘winning of the west’ or what we called the conquest of the desert. It was a very ruthless and brutal story,” Borges said.

“Regarding your rise to international prominence, would you mind describing that process?” I asked.

“I was an unknown quantity, more or less an invisible man, in Buenos Aires.

Until I got a prize from European publishers... Suddenly, when I was famous in Europe, people were interested in me in Buenos Aires, since my country was a pack of snobs, no?”

“How do you deal with your loss of sight?” I asked.

“I went blind for reading purposes in 1955. But when people come to see me, then we take Henry James or we may attempt Robert Louis Stevenson... or Mark Twain. For science fiction I think of H.G. Wells. I wonder if you know that Baudelaire every night read Edgar Allen Poe. Then he would pray to his dead mother and to Poe, whom he never met in the flesh of course. A patron saint,” Borges said.

Borges’ memorable presentations at Cornell and at the Tompkins County Library took place in the Spring of 1983.

While considered by many as the greatest short story writer of the second half of the 20th Century, Borges preferred to be thought of as a poet. He was born in 1899 and died in 1986. I will never forget our brief encounter. I remain appreciative of the assistance of Anna Geske, Louis Mezgar (TCPL director), Terry Harbin and others who helped prepare me to do this interview.

By June 2020, the library reopened its doors for “express browsing.” This allowed patrons to physically walk through and scan the bookshelves in 30-minute increments, and according to Head of Adult Services Teresa Vadakin, people “were so excited about it.”

“Express browsing was kind of a community need that our patrons were voicing,” she added. “When it started, we had people that were crying and jumping up and down.”

TCPL’s role in the community transcended the provision of library services, serving as a pop-up vaccine site, a soup kitchen for Loaves and Fishes, a voting space and more during the pandemic. The library collaborated with its community partners to cater to a broader audience of community members with a variety of needs.

With a successful vaccine rollout and the easing of pandemic restrictions across the state, the library has been able to reopen to the public. On June 1, TCPL resumed its regular hours, stripping its browsing limitations and opening up its study rooms and seating areas. Considering that many of its patrons are very young — and not yet eligible for vaccines — the library still requires individuals to wear masks while in the building.

Although the library successfully adapted and attended to the needs of the community, it faced challenges, the most demanding of which was balancing safety with providing desired services.

“It was, to be honest, some of the hardest months I have ever experienced as a professional,” Head of Youth Services Sarah O’Shea said.

Nevertheless, she shared that it was a gratifying experience. In the worst times of the pandemic, the staff realized the importance of the library in the community.

“I think what kept us afloat was that we recognized how much of the community needed the library,” Head of Access Services Jennifer Schlossberg said. “As soon as we started having interactions like bringing out books for curbside or having someone enter the building and be so excited, that really just kept me afloat when it was challenging.”

Beyond the gratifying experience of meeting community needs, other “silver linings’’ came out of the worst conditions of the pandemic, which the library is carrying over into its current operations.

Due to its popularity, book bundle and curbside services — pandemic innovations — will continue into the future.

“Whether it’s fear of being in a public space right now, someone has four kids in the car making it difficult for them to come in, or people with mobility issues, they can pull up, give us a call, and then we’ll bring materials out to them,” Schlossberg said.

Many of the virtual programs were also popular among the patrons. Many adult

and youth book clubs, for example, attracted their regular crowds in addition to OUTDOORS! new members.

“I think we’ve had such good numbers because of the virtual nature of it,” Vadakin said. “People don’t have to wait around after work. They can go home sitting in their pajama pants online, they can even eat while they are there.”

As the library staff have discovered, the benefits of virtual programming go beyond mere considerations of comfort.

According to O’Shea, the digital book clubs, talks, and programs can reach audiences who might otherwise struggle with transportation or provide a backup plan for bad weather during outdoor meetings.
