ept. 15 marked the beginning of Latinx Heritage Month, which is being celebrated in Ithaca, through the sixth annual Cine con Cultura (Cinema with Culture) Film Festival, which is a collaborative effort between Cultura Ithaca, Cornell Cinema, Ithaca College, Cinemapolis and the Latino Civic Association to name a few.

The festival stretches from Sept. 16 to Oct. 13 and includes the screening of 12 movies. The screening locations alternate between Ithaca College, Cornell Cinema, Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) and Cinemapolis.

Selections focus on movies made either by Latinx people or from a Spanish-speaking country.

Enrique Gonzalez-Conty, an assistant professor of Spanish at Ithaca College, has been working with the film festival for the last five years. He said the festival was born out of an idea from Cornell University professor Debra Castillo, who founded it with a graduate student from Cornell she had worked with, and was fueled early by a partnership between the Latino Civic Association amd Cultura Ithaca.

As the festival has continued to grow in popularity and size, several organizations were brought in to sponsor some of the events and help with the question and answer portions during the film screenings.

One of the festival’s goals is to get students from both Ithaca College and Cornell University involved in the festival which can get them to work together.

Diocese of Rochester declares bankruptcy

S

eeking protection from the wave of recent lawsuits regarding child sexual abuse over the last several decades, the Diocese of Rochester, which includes the City of Ithaca and parts of Tompkins County, declared bankruptcy last week.

The diocese has been the target of dozens of lawsuits since the Child Victims Act reopened the window for sexual abuse claims on Aug. 15. The window is scheduled to remain open for one calendar year, during which victims of abuse can come forward with their claims regardless of the normal statute of limitations or previously-set age restrictions.

Ithaca’s two local parishes, St. Catherine of Siena and Immaculate Conception Church, both had not answered requests for comment about how the diocese’s declaration would impact their operations.

It’s been reported elsewhere, though, that individual churches, parishes and schools would not be affected by the bankruptcy filing.

The lawsuits are likely to keep mounting against the DOR over prior abuses;

television station WHAM reported that they have been named in 47 cases so far, while Boston attorney Mitch Garabedian said at the beginning of August that he was preparing to file 70 cases at least against the diocese. New York City attorneys Jeff Anderson and Steve Boyd have also been vocal about the number of cases they intend to file against the diocese.

“We want to assure the survivors and their family members who have been harmed for so long and have brought claims under the Child Victims Act that this is not the end,” Boyd said. “This will not stop us or the survivors and we know there are battles to be fought.”

Of the names that have been accused by clients of Anderson and Boyd so far, only one had any connection to the Ithaca-area, Fr. Vincent Paul Collins, who was accused of abuse during his time in Perinton, NY during the 1970s. Collins worked at Immaculate Conception in the 1940s.

fter spending several years empty, the former City Health Club building is on it’s way to finding some use once again, this time as a brewery.

The building is going to be reused as a microbrewery but now the the tenant/ co-owner of the brewery, Anthony Cesari, is in the long queue for getting a New York State liquor license for the business, which is still slated to be called Personal Best Brewing.

Now, it seems that the renovations will be done before he gets the liquor license.

“I’m basically in a holding pattern because the building is being repaired and updated,” Cesari said. “It’s currently in the process of getting the exterior repainted.

The new roof is going to be going in the start of October and inside there’s just some cleanup of old utility structures and some old electrical and plumbing stuff that needs to be rerun.”

The biggest holdup in terms of the repairs is the new roof; without it, new interior materials can’t be installed because they would be ruined. The repairs are scheduled to be completed within two or three months, so long as there are no delays with the installation of the new roof. Once the business starts, he will be opening about three quarters of the space

for use with part of it walled off to expand the microbrewery as the business continues to grow.

However, Cesari is going to be waiting four to seven months for the liquor license. He was hoping to open by the end of the year, but considering the wait time for liquor licenses he could be looking at a February opening date. Since only a part of the building will be open, Cesari has been examining some additional options to use the space. His idea for the future of the building is to have co-tenants move in as well.

“Once we are in there with the brewery, there’s going to be less than three-quarters of an 8,000 sqft. of space available,” Cesari said. “I think we have enough room to be a brewery for a few years, even if growth is strong, before we need to expand. So, I’m entertaining the idea that we can have small co-tenants. Things that would compliment like a coffee roaster. There’s also a new trend called urban wineries where you’re not having the wine on location at the vineyard. They simply source the raw materials to different vineyards and doing the aging and the barreling on site.”

Since the business is in the earliest phases, finding other uses for the vacant space within the building is second prior-

ity for Cesari. Though this was initially planned as a brewpub, there will not be food service in the first phase of the business. He will, though, be focusing on brewing ales and lagers.

“The priority will be on the variety and a pretty consistent rotating tap list. I think that’s a pretty appealing part, especially with a start up, young brewery. I think it’s premature to try to establish a flagship beer or two. I think it’s exciting for people to have multiple things new on the tap list, if they are returning once a month or every other week. I think there should be a minimum expectation.”

Personal Best Brewing would join several other breweries that have established themselves in downtown Ithaca over the last several years. Liquid State Brewing has found success at its West State Street location, as has Lucky Hare Brewing, which recently moved into Press Bay Alley earlier this year.

Outside of brewing, the owners of the Watershed bar on West State Street announced they would be expanding downstairs, where they’ll be opening a draught bar.

Groton schools suffer data breach

roton Central School District announced on Aug. 29 that it was one of over 13,000 school districts across the nation victimized in a security data breach that exposed student information.

The records of 846 students were exposed during the security breach, revealing the following information of each of the students: first names, last names, date of births, email addresses and student ID numbers. Some districts had all of the information above exposed, while others may have had one or two pieces of the information exposed.

According to the school district, the security breach occurred back in Nov. 2018 when there was an unauthorized access of personally identifiable information from Pearson Education’s AIMSweb 1.0 System, which was an assessment platform used by the school district for several years until the district stopped using it at the start of the 2015–2016 academic year. The Federal Bureau of Investigation discovered the security breach and notified Pearson Education of the breach in March 2019.

The Groton Central School District has taken steps to mitigate the exposure of the data, such as having a brand new firewall installed by CNYRIC and holding professional development courses on email phishing. Pearson Education is offering complimentary credit monitoring from Experian for one year to those impacted by the security breach.

Superintendent Margo Martin said fortunately none of the email addresses

that were exposed were activated, so they were unusable. Martin also said the district did not find out that it was one of the thousands of compromised schools was because it does not directly contract with Pearson Education.

“This region was a little unique in not finding out from Pearson, like other districts across the nation were finding out, because in our contract in New York we go through BOCES,” Martin said. “We are all, in this region – 50 districts in this region – part of the CNYRIC [Central New York Regional Information Center] … and the way BOCES is structured, we go through them, they actually go through Erie 1 BOCES for this type of contract. Pearson was not willing to give it to the individual districts because they didn’t have a contract with us, they had a contract with CNYRIC.” A Pearson Education official said they let the BOCES contact the individual districts since more often than not they are the ones who house the data for the districts.

“In New York, as you know, it is a fairly unusual system, compared to a lot of other places in the country, where they have the BOCES in individual districts,” the official said. “There were some cases where we found where both the district had the account and the BOCES did, and so both were notified. Some were just through the BOCES, but even then, if the district called in or wrote in and asked Pearson if they had impacted students, we were letting them know at that point. But often

when the BOCES is the contracted party [...] They’re the ones that keep the records, complete records of which districts were using the product when. So we relied on them to provide notifications to the districts.”

In addition to not directly contracting with Pearson Education, Groton Central School District’s data is housed in CNYRIC. Martin said prior to learning of the security breach on Aug. 28, the district reached out to Pearson to find out whether or not it had been subjected to the security breach. Confusion about the structure of the contract between CNYRIC and the district led Pearson to initially deny that Groton had been impacted, Martin said, even though they had been.

The official said Pearson Education preferred to leave it to the individual districts and/or BOCES to notify those that were affected.

“We want to obviously be thorough and transparent, which is why we did make notifications as quickly as possible as we got the report,” the Pearson official said.

“But we also are cognizant that this is a sensitive situation and different districts and BOCES all have their own individual policies of how to notify the families and the schools that fall under there oversight.

So we wanted to first go to the actual people who were contracted with us and let them know about it because in a lot of situations they then have a way they like to do notifications.”

“The other piece of this is because this is a retired system and older records in most cases, a lot of the people who were impacted are not actually current students or families. So we wanted the schools or the BOCES to be able to review the records and make that determination on who to notify themselves versus us going more abroad or sending out notifications out to the media, which could lead to these districts being overwhelmed by people calling in who were not actually impacted.”

Pearson Education no longer uses AIMSweb 1.0 system as it is an outdated software. In terms of why the information that was exposed was kept on the retired system, the official said the company keeps bits and pieces of the data, like first and last names, date of births, email addresses and student ID numbers, for certain uses while it removes the majority of the records.

“There are some pieces of data that are kept for historical comparison purposes […] but a lot of it is deleted, and I think that is partially why when the data was accessed it wasn’t full records,” the official said. “They were able to access data fragments that were left or able to access even sometimes when they were deleted.

So that’s why I think a lot of this data had been deleted or removed or archived, and that’s why there were not a lot of full student records that were in here.”

Thumbs Up - Was anyone able to successfully dunk Mayor Svante Myrick over the weekend on the Commons? The mayor used social media to solicit challengers to try to douse him in the dunk tank for charity, but we never heard any reports back. Being a New York Giants fan must be bad enough, though.

Thumbs Down - However or for whatever reason, it seems like a pretty bad look that it took Groton Central School District several months to find out and notify parents that there had been a large security breach, exposing student information. It doesn’t seem clear who exactly to point the finger at, but when you have the responsibilities that a school district does, it’s tough not to be in the cross-hairs.

The Future of WRFI F

elix Teitelbaum is the ideal person to manage the up and coming community radio station, WRFI. Located in a historic downtown Ithaca building, when one enters the station there’s a lot going on. Day and night. Young people, seniors, college kids, pass in and out. Some work alone quietly, others confer in groups. In the next room JT, one of many celebrity volunteers, is broadcasting on the air. When not spinning records, he manages Ithaca’s Staples store. What a way to spend one’s lunch break, no?

Felix, who has spent most of his life in Ithaca, has been back in town since 2001after working in film in NYC. Upon return he tried his hand at organic farming and worked in marketing at GreenStar. Like everyone at WRFI, Felix started as a volunteer. Like many, he was originally recruited and trained by Nicholas Hill, one of the most magnetic local advocates for community radio.

In 1980 a group of local radio enthusiasts operated a pirate station using the same call letters (WRFI). Though he was only 10 years old at the time, Felix recalls that they regularly announced that their signal originated from a blimp flying over Ithaca. Felix no longer has the time to

float in imaginary blimps much. Now he is general manager of the station.

Earlier this year, the volunteer-powered WRFI News Department won an award for “The Loneliness Radio Project.”

The series focuses on mental health and suicide among young people; and was recognized for Best Public Affairs Series from the New York State Broadcasters Association. Felix has just wrapped up a close collaboration with the Southside Community Center: “We Are CUMEP.” This series, made with young campers at the Community Unity Music Education Camp (CUMEP), documents the camp’s music, art, and social justice programming.

So how does a group of mostly volunteers pull all this off? Felix works hard to match the volunteers’ interests, ambitions, and availability with projects and tasks that will keep the station going. Local high school students interested in broadcasting occupy the station every Wednesday afternoon 4-5 PM on Youth Radio.

Some are DJs, some are journalists. When they’re not on the air, they work behind the scenes on a wide range of projects. continued on page 7

e’ve had tons of suggestions from book club members, and the SBR panel’s book club selections for the coming months have been finalized. It is an exciting and eclectic list. October’s book is Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ much-anticipated recent publication, F*#k You. A rambling yet nuanced exposition on the temporary student loan forgiveness program for public servants, it’s full of the Secretary’s signature warmth, humility and homespun humor. (Be sure not to confuse it with Louis C.K.’s recent book of the same name. The folks at Buffalo Street Books have been alerted to steer you to the right one.) Our discussion of DeVos’ best-selling Suck Eggs last year was so lively that the panel decided to go back to the well for more. In the new book, DeVos also very thoroughly and effectively refutes the rumor that, convincing appearances to the contrary notwithstanding, she is not Joseph Goebbels in drag. (It turns out that there is compelling evidence that he died in 1945.) The evening’s drink will be Amway Sours, a kind of obscure drink that packs a real punch made of ethyl alcohol and black mamba venom, served flaming, without a straw.

November’s choice in an interesting one – The NOAA Weather Book. Fun-tocolor pictures make this introduction to meteorology ideal for weather mavens of all ages, but it is certainly not just for kids.

Anyone curious about tornadoes, hurricanes, fog, blizzards, and caving in to political pressure will love this primer on weather phenomena. Forty-four carefully researched illustrations and extensive text describe cloud types, thunderstorm formation, and global wind patterns and ocean currents. Also discussed are the causes and effects of drawing on official NOAA weather maps with felt-tipped

Though not the sort of book the panel normally chooses, it’s enlightening, entertaining, and wellillustrated, and by special arrangement with the publisher, each volume comes with a Presidential sharpie emblazoned with the insignia of Trump University and its motto “I would found an institution where any person can pay tuition.”

The drink: Hurricanes, of course.

December brings the poignant, semiautobiographical bildungsroman by Marcel Cornstarch, Good Old Days. It’s long, but worth it. A novel in seven volumes, the narrator is plunged into a reverie of reminiscence and childhood memories by a random encounter with a relic of his past – a single-use plastic Wegmans bag.

Re-edited since its release last year, the story follows the narrator’s recollections of youth and experiences into adulthood in late 20th and early 21st century Ithaca, while reflecting on the loss of time and lack of meaning in the world. Madeleine cakes and Long Island Iced Tea will be the refreshments.

January’s plan, tentatively, is to explore Felicity Huffman’s 2018 how-to book, 31 Steps to College Acceptance. Chapter three, ‘Post-Production Editing of Your SAT Exam’ and chapter six, ‘Making Bail’ are must-see reading for any parent of a high school student even if this book is not selected. We’ve been in contact with her agent and probation officer, and her schedule has recently opened up in January, so there’s a possibility of a visit by the author herself. Fingers crossed! We’re open to suggestions on beverages, though prison moonshine has been proposed.

“We welcome all volunteers; no experience necessary,” he said. “This is your radio station; your participation and support make it thrive.”

The volunteers come from all walks of life. They come from rural and urban parts of our region. Some folks come in with a general interest and then eventually focus on a specific project. Others walk in with a specific proposal for a show. For example, the station is home to the Human Rights and Social Justice Program, Alcance Latino (in Spanish), Chinese Studio (in Mandarin) and others.

Others are techies who dedicate many expert hours to building (and repairing) the station’s facilities. Some people seek training in some aspect of operating a radio station, others, who’ve been around for a while become the trainers. Felix proudly reports that recently the station added ten new programs to the schedule.

And more are in the works. Somehow it all works.

Squeezed in beside the main studio is the station’s music library. Hundreds of vinyl records and CDs are cared for by a trainee with the Senior Community Service Employment Program. The librarian Raymond will soon finish cataloguing the collection, so volunteers can quickly find available music.

And the music…“We provide a home for music you won’t hear anywhere else. Different music. Different sounds.

Brought in and spun by people who know their stuff and have a passion to share it.”

Much of the station’s broadcast equipment is aged. Some of it arrived from dumpsters and was revived by technically inclined volunteers.

The majority of the station’s budget is met by listeners and by local businesses and nonprofits who pay for on-air announcements. They include the Friendship Donations Network, the ReUse Center, Angry Mom Records, Emmy’s Organics, the Kitchen Theater, Cinemapolis, Ithaca Sheepskin, Grassroots Culture Camp, the Ithaca Reggae Fest, Cornell Department of Music and others.

The station also receives vital support from the Park Foundation, the Sophie Fund, Engaged Cornell and others. But when the station says it needs your support to keep the lights on, they’re not exaggerating! The station dreams of being able to replace its ancient equipment for starters.

The founders and the sustaining volunteers have put WRFI on the map and it’s up to us to keep it going. Felix has suggested some of the many ways we can help: ”Volunteer time, drop off additions for our music library, donate equipment, write letters of support for upcoming grant applications, and, of course, the allimportant, cold, hard cash.”

Felix has big plans for the station.

He even dreams of creating a mobile broadcast trailer so programming can be made with folks in the rural parts of our community. Turn on the radio to WRFI at 88.1 in Ithaca, 91.9 in Watkins Glen (or wrfi.org) and support this very unique local project.

On June 22 or 23, 2019, I was walking to do errands along Rt. 13. A bad boy abandoned his Lime Bike just on the edge of the bridge on the sidewalk so no one could use the sidewalk and he walked away. I went and did my errands and when I came back to walk home, some very nice and considerate person had moved the bike and put it on the other side of the railing so people can use the sidewalk. THANK YOU very much for moving the bike for me and everyoone else as Rt. 13 is too dangerous to walk or ride a bike. I’m a senior citizen and I have to use a cane and I have no judgment of distance. When you moved that bike, you made my day, as I would have had to have taken a really long way home if I could not use the bridge. Just like a lot of people who have driver’s licenses and can’t drive, there are bike users who can’t ride their bikes correctly or follow the rules.

By M att Bu tler eveloper David Lubin, leader of Elmira-based L Enterprises, sits on a dusty old chair on a cracked concrete walkway that’s filled with weeds, gazing out beneath his trademark baseball cap. Occasionally, construction vehicles that don’t seem to be doing much of anything loudly pass by, forcing him to pause his sentence while they kick up dust and gravel.

The landscape doesn’t look like much now, and hasn’t for a long time. But a few years down the road, if everything goes according to Lubin’s plan, the 95-acre site on South Aurora Street could slowly transform into his magnum opus right before the city’s eyes.

The conversation starts with Lubin cautioning that he is not a politician: “I say what I mean, which precludes me from being a politician,” he said, smirking.

local consultants and spokespeople handle most of the media responsibilities while his ideas underwent the typically toughminded Ithaca planning process. That may be by design: he admits that his lack of filter has probably slowed his own projects’ progress down (something those interviewed for this story agreed on) so he has ceded messaging to people like Vicki Taylor Brous, his most prominent local representative, or Jamie Gensel, the engineer leading the way on Chain Works.

Whether Ithacans know his name or not, Lubin will soon deliver two of the most significant developments in modern Ithaca history: his Harold’s Square project, which is mid-construction, will become the tallest buildling on the Commons, while Chain Works District, the neighborhood-sized redevelopment of the former Morse Chain factory site on South Hill, just received final approval on its site plan.

Outside of projects undertaken by Cornell University, Chain Works is possibly the largest construction project in the City of Ithaca’s history, measuring 1.7 million

square feet total with 915 units of housing and several buildings split between commercial, residential and industrial uses.

But what he has said, over the years and now, illuminates why he chose to take on two of the most difficult projects in recent Ithaca history, and in interviews he’s surprisingly gregarious for someone who has made such an effort to avoid the spotlight.

Counter to his occasional gruffness, that’s one side of his personality that has probably helped him over the years. The two projects Lubin chose were likely two of the most challenging he could have possibly chosen by which to leave his mark on the City of Ithaca, but the other side of that coin is they give him the chance to leave behind a “legacy project,” as he calls it, even at the cost of time and patience.

One, Harold’s Square, took years to get approved and has been hampered for even more time by lack of office-space tenant interest early and construction delays later.

The project has primarily served only to anger Commons patrons and business owners over the last year or so since its

work has forced the closing of the Commons Playground by order of the city. The Chain Works District, on the other hand, required an extensive negotiation with the Emerson Corporation, the site’s former operators, regarding how much environmental clean-up was needed to bring the land up to residential livability standards.

To indicate how severely the clean-up was needed, the City of Ithaca took five years with its environmental review, according to Planning Department Director JoAnn Cornish.

“I thought I had a good vision, and no one else wanted to take it on,” Lubin said.

“I like adaptive re-use, taking what’s here and redeveloping it for today and improving it and making it ready for tomorrow. [...] I’ve talked to a lot of developers, and they say ‘Oh, I can take this piece and build a nice little apartment complex here.’

But they don’t understand that this can be a neighborhood, we can integrate it.”

pollutant remediation finishes up in the coming weeks. The site has basically been a blight on the city since it ceased operations. Its long tan and beige buildings are visible from most vantage points throughout Ithaca but have sat idle since 2009, while the ground beneath them remained significantly contaminated from its industrial past. Cornish said she thinks the community benefit will be so obvious that Ithacans will embrace the project early, knowing the alternative was just an empty, polluted plot of land. Lubin’s vision for Chain Works is borderline utopic, and his pride in the project is impossible to stifle during conversation.

He calls it a “secret garden.”

There is at least some resentment left over from whatever procedural obstacles Lubin has encountered during his time developing in Ithaca. At one point, he says he feels like he January 9, 2019 has been painted as “public enemy number 1” and that “If there’s one thing Ithacans have, it’s opinions.” He laments that he hasn’t gotten the support that he expected, something he suspects is a symptom of a general antipathy to changes in January 9, 2019 the city. “In Ithaca, a developer is a bad name,” Lubin said. “Let’s face it, there’s a lot of slumlords, a lot of people who don’t treat people well. I can understand it. [...] But I understand Ithaca. I understand the people and where they’re coming from. And I said, ‘I think I can work with them and develop some really unique things.’”

Their mission has been to serve as a beginning farmer training and food justice organization. The center runs various services and programs to support beginning or new farmers who are looking to learn how to farm and operate successful businesses. They prioritize their efforts to serve people of color and other marginalized groups. Elizabeth Gabriel, executive director of the Groundswell Center, has been working with them since 2015 to ensure there are plenty of new ways to continue the center’s mission. Recently, the center was awarded a grant that will allow them to rework their farm business incubator program, which has been around since 2012, into something that works better for those who are enrolled in it.

“The farm was designed to attract new and beginning farmers who would be on the farm for three years and then graduate to run a business on their own land,” Gabriel said. “That program has been 80-90 percent filled with refugee farmers, and what we realized over the last few years of running the program is that three years is not enough for them to get ready to run a commercial farm business. Also, these refugee farmers don’t have very large commercial interests, some are pretty small scale. The grant’s going to allow us to transition that farm incubator program into what we call a community farm and instead of requiring these refugee growers to leave the site, they can stay there longterm and continue to grow all the food they’re growing.”

Other benefits of this grant are to create a new program that is being called a farming practicum. This program is designed to provide people with little to no farm skills with the correct abilities to have

a successful business. The program will span an intensive 28 weeks, according to Gabriel. The details of the program are still being worked out but she anticipates that the farming practicum will start in 2021.

“We tend to train small farmers, according to the USDA that’s a gross revenue of less than $350,000, so small is relative,” Gabriel said. “But, that’s probably 99 percent of the population that we train. We also have a focus on sustainable farming or regenerative agriculture in our workshops and business development program.”

Upcoming events include an array of workshops and tours that immerse people in the technical side of farming and production. One of their upcoming workshops centers on water management and the center has been offering a women on the land workshop series, which are taught by women, for women. This allows them to learn trades that have been particularly male dominated. The final workshop will be occurring in November. On Sept. 19, the Groundswell Center will be holding their most exciting event of the year.

“Groundswell is entering our tenth year and we are kicking off our celebration in September with an annual event called the Sunset Soiree,” Gabriel said. “It takes place at our farm business incubator which is three miles out of town. It’s a beautiful evening outside on the farm, surrounded by flowers and crops.”

There will be local food and local drinks served as well as a butter bar and an auction. Interested attendees can RSVP for the event on Groundswell’s website.

The event starts at 5 p.m. and is located on Rachel Carson Way in Ithaca.

Cornell Cinema. Another film, “Through the Repellent Fence” centers on migration at the United States-Mexico border and art as well. Gonzalez-Conty spoke about some of the other selections people can expect to see at the festival.

“We chose some films that have to do with the topics we teach in our classes,” Gonzalez-Conty said. “For example, Cecelia Lawless [a Senior Lecturer of Romance Studies at Cornell University] wanted to invite the filmmaker Miguel Coyula on Oct. 3 and that’s the only filmmaker we are going to be hosting because we don’t have a lot of money to bring everyone [...]

I also wanted to bring films from countries that are never usually represented at film festivals. For example, we have a film from Paraguay and most of the time it is hard to get films from Paraguay. We are bringing “Las Herederas” on October 10, which is a film about a lesbian couple in Paraguay.”

That screening is going to be sponsored by the Ithaca College Center for

LGBT Education, Outreach, and Services with members speaking at a question and answer session after the film. Another film, “Maxima,” which is a film about an indigenous leader in Peru, which will be the film to close out the festival, talks about indigenous movements and rights in Peru. The film will be shown on Oct. 13. Gonzalez-Conty said the films such as “Maxima” have been known to attract large audiences, and he feels the showing of the film will present a good message, considering Indigenous People’s Day is the next day. The film will be screened at Cinemapolis on Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. The festival will also host a film that was filmed in Ithaca called “I’ll See You Around”, which centers on the life of Lucas, a 30 year-old African-American man, living in Ithaca, who is trying to finish his degree at community college. 27 years of mish-mash

ne fine day in mid-September in 1992, I sat across the table from then-Managing Editor Claudia Montague, and she said, “You have done a nice job with the freelance assignments you have submitted to us, and given (then-sports columnist) John Ettinger is moving to Nashville, I’d like to ask that you consider writing the weekly sports column here at the Ithaca Times.” I replied, “I will do it for a month and we’ll check back in to determine whether we have a good match.”

Here we are, 27 years later, and to celebrate this warm and cozy milestone I called my pal Terry Cullen. Terry was one of my first interviews in 1992, and we talked about what was then known as Cornell 150’s Football (it would later be Lightweight, then Sprint Football. Players must weigh 178 pounds or less, 48 hours prior to the game). In ‘92, Terry said, “I’ll

try to remember last week’s game…I’m getting old you know, I have been coaching here since 1964.”

That’s easy math. In 1992, Terry was halfway into what is still a very rewarding career, as he is still at the helm of the program, although his role has changed.

“I’m more of a G.M. now,” Cullen offered. “I do a lot of the sh… I mean, grunt work. I let the other guys coach.”

Speaking of “the other guys,” I have been connected with many of them for the entirety of my Ithaca Times tenure as well.

Bobby Gneo, Ron Amato and Jeff Tilton have all helped me out with stories as players and as coaches, I know Dan Donahue and Willie Evans, it’s a veritable treasure trove of knowledge and experience.

I told Terry that I am very pleased that the Sprint version of the (sort of) Big Red got underway last weekend, as the varsity football team starts so late it feels like they

don’t play until Thanksgiving (actually, they open up at Marist this weekend).

The Sprint team took the longest road trip they will take this year when they visited AldersonBroaddus, a college in West Virginia. In Cullen’s words, “We went to State College (PA), turned left and went another 3 hours. The school is very nice, very pretty, but it’s the middle of nowhere.

No cell phones. That’s God’s country.”

Alderson Broaddus (AB) is a first-year Sprint program, and Cullen said, “They have some players, but they’re young.

Their coach told us that they only have seven players from West Virginia, and some are from Georgia, Alabama and Florida.” AB got off to a fast start, going up 14-0, but their inexperience showed and Cornell would battle its way back into the game and ultimately come away with a 38-21 victory.

I asked Cullen how a brand new program found its way into the league, and he replied, “One of the teams – Franklin Pierce – was expelled from the league (for violating weight rules), and the league likes to have an even number to avoid bye weeks, so they were admitted.”

Cullen knows I love writing about local athletes, and this year’s Sprint roster features three of them. Two Julians – Iacovelli and Korfine – hail from Ithaca High School and Denver Space is from just up the road in Dryden.

I asked the veteran coach if he took his private helicopter to West Virginia (knowing he does not have one), and he laughed and said, “Of course not! I’m a team guy

so I took the team bus!” I said, “That must have been rough on you after 54 years of coaching, Terry,” and he replied, “Actually, when we got to State College, Willie Evans figured out how to plug into the internet, and we watched the Syracuse/Clemson game. It was the best bus trip ever!

or one time only, the Downtown Ithaca Alliance (DIA) presents A Weekend of the Stars, which will run from Sept. 21 - 22. This special series of events will be comprised of several events culminating in a final event featuring numerous speakers talking about how they struggled through their difficult aspects and challenges in their lives.

The list of speakers includes retired NBA Players Larry Jones and Granville Waiters, professional boxer James “Buster” Douglas, former gymnast Angela MitchelKoster, pastor and author Dr. Johannes Christian, author and screenwriter Joseph Ponder, and Ithaca-based author and screenwriter Trazz Sawyer. One of the common themes that all these people share is that of overcoming serious obstacles to achieve the heights of success.

Gary Ferguson, executive director of the Downtown Ithaca Alliance, worked with Sawyer to bring these speakers to Ithaca. Sawyer has worked with Joseph Ponder on and the children’s book “Eight Ounces of Water for Eight Hours of Magic.” Ponder worked with several of the speakers on the film adaptation of his novel, “The Crossover That Won the Game,” which he co-wrote with his brother, Jamell.

This weekend is designed to be an inspirational and motivational set of events for young people and community members. Some of the events throughout the weekend are a showing of the film “The Crossover That Won the Game,” based on the novel of the same name by Jamell and Joseph Ponder, at Cinemapolis on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Cinemapolis box office. Ferguson spoke about some of the other public events that

will be going on throughout the weekend.

“On Saturday, there’s two other occasions for the public to get a chance to interact,” Ferguson said. “One will be a free opportunity on The Commons. The team will be there doing some brief comments and then there will also be some music as well. We’ve got Trazz, who’s also part of a band, and they’re doing some musical numbers as well. It’s about an hour long event on the Commons, from 1 - 2 p.m. on the Commons. The main event is Saturday at 3 p.m. at Ithaca High School. It’s a series of TED talks or master talks by each of the seven team members. Each one will be talking about ten to fifteen minutes about their life stories, interspersed with that will be some entertainment provided by folks from GIAC, one of the sponsors of this.”

The final event, “See Your Potential & Believe to Achieve” talks, will be held at Kulp Auditorium with tickets available at the State Theatre box office or online via the State Theatre’s online box office for $10. Along with these public events, the group will be at a few ticketed events. The first is a meet and greet reception at the Tompkins County Public Library for youth across the community on Sept. 20.

Tickets are being distributed from the Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) and Southside Community Center. GIAC will be hosting a community lunch, meet and greet at noon on Saturday Sept. 21.

Members of the public are more than welcome to attend. On Saturday morning, the team will be heading to Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) to meet and speak to students. More information about this event can be found on the DIA’s website.

Porchfest promises to be smashing event for fall

ith an array of fall events coming to Ithaca throughout the next few months, there is one that will have neighbors excited in particular, bringing front-porch music to the community. Porchfest 2019 is back and will be taking place from Sept. 22 from 12-6 p.m, boasting 171 performers at 102 locations throughout Fall Creek.

Part of Porchfest’s lore is that it started in Ithaca before growing into a nationwide pheonmenon that has caught on in nearly countless places elsewhere. Andy Adelewitz,

co-organizer of Porchfest, is looking forward to the festival’s return. He spoke about some of the groups people can expect to see this year.

“One group I’m excited about this year is called OA,” Adelewitz said. “They’re a duo of seventh graders who I saw at Rootstock, a youth music festival that the New Roots Charter School put together on the Commons a few months ago. They were really great singers and songwriters, and I’m glad they’re going to do their thing at Porchfest too. We’re also excited to have GunPoets back this year, they’ve been one of the biggest draws at Porchfest for many years but had to take last year off.”

This year, Adelewitz will be playing on a porch with a new band called The Love Me Backs. Having performers return year after year really makes the event a crowd favorite with music lovers of any genre, who can see the progression of their preferred acts year over year. In past years, Gunpoets and the Fall

Creek Brass Band have become huge attractions in the final time slot. Both groups will once again have a closing Sunday slot, along with many others.

The team behind Porchfest has changed this year. Gretchen Hildreth, who co-founded the festival back in 2007, decided to step back after 12 years of being responsible for this event as it continued to grow in both size and popularity. Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services (INHS), who sponsors the event, has been taking a more active role in the event planning, according to Adelewitz. In addition to the street closures, one of the bigger challenges is putting together 170 bands into six time slots within a small neighborhood, which has been a mammoth task, Adelewitz said.

Additionally, there’s the annual matter of preparing the community for the inherent traffic disruptions that come from Porchfest.

between wanting to be as unobtrusive as possible, and then on the other hand, feeling like it’d be cool to close down the whole neighborhood for Porchfest and really let everyone take over the streets,” Adelewitz said. “Safety ultimately drives all the decision-making, though. The city’s Special Events Team strongly encouraged us to close more streets this year, as the crowds mixing with car traffic is their biggest concern. But, of course, you do need to enable some traffic to move through, and emergency vehicles if needed, so our compromise was to keep Cayuga Street and a couple other thoroughfares open to traffic, and closed to performers, so you didn’t have stationary audiences crowding into those streets.”

For anyone looking to know what streets will be closed, they can find that information on Porchfest’s website.

Some of the food trucks that will be at this year’s festival are the Silo Food Truck with their killer mac and cheese. The Good Truck, another long time favorite of Porchfest, have made the food for the event. They will be set up along Thompson Park, essentially the heart of the festival.

There will also be gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches from Eat the Food and pierogies from Casca Deli. This year, for the first time, Luna Inspired Street Food and 22 T

The festival does still need volunteers.

Anyone who is interested is encouraged to sign up online on Porchfest’s website. According to Adelewitz, the volunteers will be primarily stationed at a traffic barricade to ensure residents can get their vehicles out safely through the crowds. They will also be distributing maps/schedule booklets to volunteers so they can be made available to have. Some volunteers will be allowed to roam on bicycles to keep an eye on things as well.

For Adelewitz, one of his favorite parts of the festival is the democratic way it happens.

“We don’t curate the lineup—anyone who signs up before the deadline and has a porch to play on is in,” he said. “You don’t have to prove yourself to anyone, you don’t have to buy a ticket or be over 21 or have a huge social media following—you just have to want to play some music, plain and simple. So it’s a place where kids get to play, and where a lot of groups might play their only show of the year. That also means it’s a popular place for new bands to play their first show ever. Porchfest showcases the full creative depth of our community in a way that no other festival really can.”

Jokes from the Cheap Seats Live MST3K performance brings sarcasm to State

Part of the show’s recent momentum has included live tours around the country, so the Ithaca Times sat down with Joel Hodgson, who created the show in the late 1990s, to talk about making the show and leaving his creation.The show is this Saturday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. at the State Theatre.

Ithaca Times: Let’s talk about the show.

IT: A friend of mine programs a family classics series at the local arthouse cinema, and even I know you can’t get Disney for love or money.

Joel Hodgson: Yeah, this is a new cast.

Conor McGiffin [...] He’s the new Tom Servo, he’s a musical theatre guy. Nate Begle is our Crow, he’s a long-time puppet guy, and he got kind of introduced to us

by Grant Baciocco, who’s our lead puppeteer for the [Netflix] TV series, and has also been Crow on the road for the last two tours. Yvonne Freese is playing Mega Synthia (a new character) and Gypsy. And Emily Marsh plays a character named Emily Crenshaw, the rigger for the circus, who sets up all this stuff. It’s like, when you put on a circus, the rigger is the person who puts up the high wire, and they put up the cages when they used to have animal acts.

IT: I gather that you’re not a film buff, and so a lot of the films that you’ve used were suggested by other writers. Is that accurate?

JH: We don’t get suggestions for movies. People who suggest movies don’t know

IT: Sure. [laughs] JH: You know? Like on Twitter, someone said, “You know what movie you should do? Pete’s Dragon.” And I wrote back, “Could you call Disney for me and see if you can get the rights to that?”

JH: It doesn’t mean anything when people suggest movies, because it’s like, “Great. Give me a phone number I can call and see if we can get the rights,” etc. It goes back to the concept of an ironic viewing, right? So it’s like, we’re the first show to do ironic viewing.

IT: Yeah, you were.

JH: So you don’t have to be a film buff to understand that.

IT: What about these movies you’re touring with now?

JH: “No Retreat, No Surrender” and “Circus of Horrors.” You usually start with, like, film packages. You start with a great list of films that are clearable, right? It’s not like window shopping where you say, “I gotta have that movie” and then you talk to the lawyers, and then you find who’s got

the rights, you know what I mean? You start with a brace of films that are cleared that you can get. Then you sift through those, and you start with the title of ‘em, then you screen ‘em, and then you just kind of hold it in your hand and go, “Is this going to be a good MST3K episode?”

So that’s kinda it.

IT; This will be your last tour? What led you to make that decision?

JH: Well, there’s a lot of things at play, but my job, I feel like, was to come back and re-jigger MST and bring in new people. We brought in Elliot Kalan, who was on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart, as our head writer [for Netflix], and Jonah Ray as the new host, and all new talent doing the robots and as writers. So I felt like I was the one who had the vision that it could come back, that you could refresh it with new people. And so now that makes that a little stronger, like I’m not gonna go out on tour anymore; I’ve been out on the last two tours. This [tour] kind of signifies the end of that, and I won’t be going out on the road anymore. It’s mostly just…I’m 59 years old, and it’s really a lot of work to be on the road. I think that’s what motivates it more than anything. It’s kind of like a signal to everybody, like “Yup, yup, I’ll kinda work behind the scenes, I’ll work another five years with the brand and have other people do it.” Kind of like I did with the [Netflix] TV show: I was an executive producer. So it’s a symbolic thing, to kinda go, “Yeah, there’s an end to it.”

JH: Yeah, it’s something that you can control, whereas there’s so much in show business, and especially TV, that you can’t control. And so it’s just that thing.

Next year, we’re already booking the 2020 Christmas tour, and I’m not gonna be on it and we’re gonna have all new people riffing. That’s the whole idea, to just roll that over.

IT: That’s the nature of something that’s been around this long. When I heard MST was coming, I assumed it was Jonah and Patton Oswalt and the whole Netflix crew. And when I heard it was you, I thought, “Well, Trace Beaulieu and Kevin Murphy won’t be there.”

JH: To me, it’s like, it’s funny but you can’t…I mean, I don’t know what that would take, to get all of the old guys on a bus have everybody go out, you know. But all this new cast, they’re like 30-year-olds, they’re younger than the cast that were on the TV show.

IT: A bunch of young bucks that grew up on Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal, JH: It’s really true, man. It’s really true.

And they’re all Mystery Science Theatre fans. It was funny, but they’re actually younger than the cast of the [original] TV show.

A satisfactory Indian experience in Collegtown

ou might think that someone who has publicly reviewed restaurants for two decades, in the relatively small city of Ithaca, would become blasé when checking out the variety of dining establishments. In my case, that would not be correct. I am still in awe of the amazing variety and scope of what is available so close to us. For example, when I travel about the country, it’s not at all unusual to land in a city much larger than Ithaca and look for, and not find, an Indian restaurant. Here, there are several, all close by; in fact, there are two, Sangam and Mehak, just a few doors away from each other on Eddy Street in Collegetown.

Over the years I’ve enjoyed many meals at both and have reviewed them for the Ithaca Times. Personally, I prefer Mehak for reasons which should become clear when I review it again next spring, however I am very comfortable in saying that whichever you choose, you’ll get an authentic, tasty, well-cooked meal.

Sangam was the first of the two to

open its doors.

The current owners took over an Indian establishment in 1990 that had opened in 1983 and renamed it.

Sangam refers to the holy place where two rivers, the Ganga (Ganges) and Jamuna merge. It retains a light, bright spirit with the help of Indian themed adornments on its soft lime green walls. As you might imagine, in a college town, the all-youcan-eat lunch buffets ($11.99) are the jewels in the crowns of both these Indian establishments. Among the ten hot trays at Sangam, you’ll always find rice, Tandoori chicken (cooked in a cylindrical, clay, high temperature Tandoor oven), chicken curry, Dosa (rice flour filled with potatoes or vegetables), nan and some form of sag (greens, usuallyspinach) which might be combined with potatoes, chick peas, green peas, or Paneer, (soft cheese made by

curdling milk with acid, e.g. lemon juice) on any given day. The other offerings may change from day-to-day but don’t expect a lot of surprises or variations. Cold dishes include a salad, usually tomato slices with pale iceberg lettuce, and a liquid rice pudding. If, for any reason, you don’t want to have the buffet, you can always order items from the menu.

Two entrées I’ve recently enjoyed are Bhindi Masala, which is okra sautéed with chopped ginger, onions, and tomatoes, and Goat Sagwala ($14.95). Chunks of tender goat meat are served in a casserole with creamed spinach and spices. Note: The way goat is butchered in India is often with a cleaver that leaves small, and sharp

shards of bone. Indians like the minerals available from the bones split this way but be careful and don’t let small children order goat dishes. Are you, like me, weary of having a server inquire, at the end of a meal, “Did you guys save any room for dessert?” Well, I have the perfect antidote.

First, because it’s a serve yourself buffet, there’s no one there to query you. And most importantly, unobtrusively sitting very near you, on the buffet table, is Gajar Halwa (carrots mashed with milk and cardamom). Because it’s sweet, it strikes me as the perfect answer to “you readers” if you, in fact, didn’t save room for dessert but you indulge in dessert as you eat wonderfully tasty mashed, healthy Carrots.

The bottom line for me is that food quality and preparation is the key ingredient of any restaurant and at Sangam, both are excellent.

Tidbits: Parking on the hilly streets of Collegetown can be challenging, however, there are garages close by. I have an ongoing problem with communications and time management at Sangam. With all the times I’ve eaten there, the restaurant consistently opens with only 5070% of the hot dishes available on the buffet. Various kitchen staff bring trays out when ready, which can often be 15 minutes late, and, the most expensive item on the buffet, the Tandoori chicken, is often last out.

There are no prices listed on their website menus, but I find prices to be quite reasonable.

Jazz veterans coming to town The Bad Plus stops at the Hangar Theatre

hen musician Orrin Evans joined The Bad Plus jazz trio, he was replacing co-founder Ethan Iverson on piano. More than two years have gone by and Evans seems to be enjoying working with Reid Anderson (bassist) and David King (drummer), which is not surprising, as the original members knew of Evans music (Captain Black Big Band) and Evans’ playing style.

While the trio has been performing for 17 years, the verve Evans brings seems to fit well and especially since they released their current record titled Never Stop II on Legbreaker Records. In this phone interview, Evans takes some time to chat about the new release and the trios’ upcoming show in Ithaca, at the Hangar Theatre on Oct. 24..

Ithaca Times: The trio has been performing for over 17 years and you recently joined the group. How is the creative jazz process going this year? Do you feel there are changes and yet things that are staying the same?

Orrin Evans: Hopefully nothing ever

stays the same. Whatever we are playing whether it’s together as The Bad Plus or whether it’s music we are playing separately, hopefully it always evolves as everyone is about going to the next step, and The Bad Plus, each member, is about going to the next step, even if you don’t know where that step is going and embracing that. So in the history of The Bad Plus being an evolving group, we are continuing to evolve everyday, and every concert is a little bit different. Whether we are going for something new and with the addition of new people or a new person that is inevitable, because I’m bring into the fold what they have already been doing.

IT: You are from Philadelphia. What was the music scene like for you growing up and who do you feel influenced your playing in music?

OE: Growing up in Philly was amazing. Growing up with so many different people who are now jazz greats – I mean from the Eubank’s family, to Christian McBride, to Joey DeFrancesco -- Gerald Veasley. There were so many people and

So recently I checked out this pianist by the name of James Francies, who is just released his own record. I also listen to whoever my son has been checking out – just to see who is around like Anderson.

Paak and Childish Gambino. I’m not overall a fan, per se, but the beautiful thing about streaming is there is so much music and I spend a good portion of my time in the car, so I put it on and I just listen. And if there is something I haven’t heard before I write it down. So it’s really just about what speaks to my mind and speaks to my soul.

IT: What are your hopes for the upcoming performance in Ithaca?

OE: That we do what the fans that have been the fans with the band for 17 years expect, and then that we also give them a bit of what they ask but then the unexpected – you know to keep them coming back and that we create new listeners. It’s always important to keep the fans we have and it’s also important to grab new fans.

So hopefully just as many of the people who walk in to the concert in October that are fans of The Bad Plus and also some new fans that are giving The Bad Plus a chance. That’s a part of the evolution too.

some of them still live here and it’s such a rich environment. It was a very rich environment to grow up in. And as far as who influenced me – there were so many elders around from Trudy Pitts to Shirley Scott to Mickey Roker, to Arthur Harper, to some of the younger ones that are now older like Mike Boone, [James] Sid Simmons, and the list could go on.

IT: You have said you have been influenced by Grover Washington Jr., what is it about his music that makes a difference musically?

OE: I would say he is one of the people, but I’ve always been a fan of the sound. If there is anything I’ve learned and I would not dare say I’ve mastered it, but I’ve learned how you create it and then stand by a sound on your instrument. And he clearly has a sound that is identifiable. He can play one note and you know who it is, and that sound is so warm and inviting and that is something that as a musician in general that we strive for, to have our own voice and our own sound.

IT: What music are you listening to lately that helps you in your own playing with the trio?

OE: I don’t know if I have been listening to anything per se that specifically helps me with The Bad Plus, but whoever I’ve been listening to helps me in my own psyche, my own spirit, and my own energy and which in return helps me in The Bad Plus. And ideally I try to listen to who is ever out there of the younger generation to keep myself inspired while also listening to some of the other things.

s the Apple Harvest Festival makes its return for the 37 year in a row, the Downtown Ithaca Alliance and the Center for Vistors and Business are shaking things up by adding some new features to the festival. The festival is a celebration of the rich heritage of New York State’s biggest crop, apples. Allison Graffin and Scott Rougeau of the Downtown Ithaca Alliance (DIA) are sure this will be one of the biggest years yet, possibly having more than the 45,000 people who came out for last year’s festival. In addition to the bevy of food and farm vendors, craft fairs and performances at the Bernie Milton Pavilion, there will be several popup events going on around town.

“There’s a kick-off event happening at Coltivare, not far from the tree,” Rougeau said.

“That’s a ticketed event and will have three speakers presenting at that as well as cider or apple themed pairings throughout the night.

Coltivare’s put together a pretty nice menu and our speakers are experts in the apple insider field.

They’ve picked out some really nice selections for people so that should be a nice event.”

The kick-off event will start at 5:30 on Sept. 26. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased through Eventbrite. One event that will be returning, after taking a year off, is Monks and Makers, to be held at Monks at 11a.m. on Sept. 29 at the Marriott Hotel. This event will consist of several 60-minute sessions in which eventgoers can taste ciders from throughout the region. Monks will provide snacks that pair well with each cider. The sessions are $10 to attend with limited walk-in spots available. The participating cideries include Black Diamond Farm & Cider, Embark Craft Ciderworks, Rootstock Cider Works, Grisamore Cider Works, Lake Drum Brewing, Eve’s Cidery, Three Brothers Winery, Blue Toad Hard Cider, New York Cider Company, and Angry Orchard.

One of the newer events this year will be the Farmer’s Showcase which will be set up in Press Bay Alley. This event is more educational and will teach people about the work it takes to be a farmer. Some of the vendors will be giving in-depth talks about their process for apple cultivation. There will also be livestock at the showcase and baby goats, from Laughing Goat Farms, will be on the Commons.

“We are partnering with Conventions and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and Apple Harvest is part of a larger grant,” Graffin said. “The idea is to help share the story and the strong, rich agriculture economy that we have in the county and the greater Finger Lakes. With apples being the prime crop in New York State, we are in the prime apple region. The real goal has been to get back to the roots to share with people coming in why this festival and why apples are so important to our region. Then what we can do to teach people about apple growing, the products made from apples, not just the variety

In previous years, apple cider donuts have always been a popular treat festivalgoers flock to get. However, with only two or three vendors selling them in past years, lines stretching across

the area have been quite a common occurrence.

This year, though, there will be five vendors selling apple cider donuts. One fact that Graffin pointed out is that, like snowflakes, no two apple donuts are made the same. Some can be flakier while others have a cakier feel to them.

This year, there will also be a cider trail around Ithaca. Restaurants that are participating will have certain apple cocktails available with some shops offering cider tastings. Passports for the cider trail are available at the DIA’s information booth located on The Commons near Center Ithaca. Playland Amusement will be making a return to the festival with plenty of rides and games for people to enjoy. For parents looking to take a break, there will be a family fun zone set up in the atrium of Center Ithaca.

One final addition to the festival is an interactive statue being built by former resident Amy Lewis-Sweetman. The statue will be on display in Bank Alley at a temporary location throughout the festival. After the festival is over, though, the statue will go on permanent display somewhere in the downtown core, though that location has not yet been determined. fter spending five years studying architecture at Cornell University, Amy Lewis-Sweetman is using those skills to be a part of the Apple Harvest Festival. She answered the call to artists sent out by the Downtown Ithaca Alliance and has created a statue to commemorate the yearly festival.

The sculpture is a combination of plasma cut steel and antique farm equipment called Center Agrisculpture: Apples Lovingly Rethought.

The sculpture’s creation came from using real apples from her farm in Warwick, NY, and her design skills as well.

“It’s a fun play on words and shapes,” LewisSweetman said. “It’s going downtown, the center of the city, somewhere. It’s literally apples from our farm, the Sweetman Dairy Farm over in Warwick, that I’ve taken and cut them in half, both the tall way as well as the longitudinal way. I got different cross-sections and generated different ideas for apples by making prints of apples from our trees, using charcoal from our campfire pit. Through those apple prints of apple sections, I was able to come up with beautiful shapes that I brought into Auto CAD on the computer and drew them up very precisely.”

After she designed the apples, she was able to have them be plasma cut into the designs she created and incorporate them into the sculpture. This process was somewhat tricky in that she was aiming to ensure that there would

be some variety in the shapes of the apples in the sculpture. As with any project of this size, she faced a few challenges, particularly in the design process.

She wasn’t sure how to generate the idea of translating fleshy apples into a hard steel sculpture. Lewis-Sweetman wanted to make sure that the sculpture wasn’t a literal representation or kitschy. However, this also happens to be one of her favorite parts of the design and sculpting process. Also, in doing this sculpture, she wanted to make sure it stood out among some of the other public art scattered around downtown Ithaca. However, there is one worry Lewis-Sweetman has planned ahead for after a harrowing experience during her Cornell days﹘transporting the sculpture from Warwick to Ithaca. Lewis-Sweetman has prior experience with such a trek, having done the same thing during the Heart of the City Sculpture competition several years ago.

“It was a call to artists and she was practicing at Holt Architects downtown. “That was my very first experience transporting anything with a trailer that was over four hours away,” LewisSweetman said. I’ve learned the hard way, as I believe it’s wonderful to learn by failing, I learned that the combination of certain types of welds and certain types of trailers like a rented U-Haul trailer, without any shock absorbers, are a bad combination.”
