have been no severe disease reported among this population despite the more transmissible nature of omicron. Of the 44 initial cases sequenced from one day of positive cases at the community testing site at the Shops at Ithaca Mall, 18, or about 41%, were identified to carry the omicron variant. The health department is awaiting additional sequencing results of other recent positive samples.

In a press release, Public Health Director Frank Kruppa said: “We’re able to see, nearly in real-time, how omicron is spreading in our community.

This is a testament to how important access to testing and sequencing are and how fortunate we are to have partners in Cornell and Cayuga Health committed to ongoing pan-

demic response and transparency.”

Kruppa added that despite the rapid spread of the new variant, the county is not seeing an increase in the severity of disease. And indeed, according to the health department’s data, despite more than 2,000 more positive cases now than around this time last year, hospitalizations are actually lower. For comparison, on Jan. 3, 2021, there were 251 active cases, and 31 hospitalizations.

As of Dec. 21, there were 2,589 cases and 19 hospitalizations.

The relatively low level of hospitalization and severe illness has been attributed repeatedly to the county’s high vaccination rate by Kruppa.

“The vaccines are continuing to prove effective in preventing severe disease,” he said.

“As our cases have gone up significantly, especially amongst the most highly vaccinated portion of our community, severe disease and hospitaliza-

tions have not increased.”

As alluded to in that quote, Cornell’s on-campus population is about 97% vaccinated, according to the university’s COVID dashboard. The school moved to alert level red on Dec. 14 after hundreds of tests came back positive from the weekend before. Alert level red means there’s a significant increase in incidence with limited quarantine, isolation and/ or local hospital capacity. From Dec. 11 – Dec. 14, there were 980 positive tests.

All final exams were moved online and the Dec. 18 commencement ceremony was canceled, and libraries, fitness centers and gyms were closed to students while athletic competitions were also canceled.

Over on South Hill, Ithaca College also saw an increase in positive tests and moved to alert level orange on Dec. 16.

Orange is considered moderate risk and is used when the incidence of COVID-19 increases substantially and is more widespread in the community.

According to the school, contract tracing measures found the primary source of the surge in positive cases came from large off-campus social gatherings over the weekend of Dec. 10-12, particularly Santacon on Dec. 11.

As of Dec. 20, there are 228 active cases. No changes were made to final exams, but the college encouraged students to leave campus as soon as they were done with their coursework and exams. The positive cases have not been sequenced to check for the omicron variant, but due to the community spread in Ithaca and the number of positives at Cornell, Ithaca College leadership suspected it was responsible for the surge on their campus as well.

Omicron surges as cases pass 2,500

W

ith over 2,500 active COVID-19 cases in Tompkins County and a new variant sweeping the country, the pandemic seems to have entered another new phase. Currently, Tompkins County has the highest number of cases per 100,000 residents in the state at 249.2. The next highest is 118.4 in New York County (Manhattan). The county health department said results from sequencing of positive cases done through Cornell University’s virology lab, in collaboration with Cayuga Medical Center and the health department, show a high rate of omicron transmission amongst the 18-24 year-old Cornell student population, and additional prevalence amongst the wider community tested through the mall testing site. According to the CDC, about 75% of cases in the United States are due to omicron.

The initial batch of positive results sequenced due to the rapid spread observed on Cornell’s campus along with an indication of omicron results in 100% of the 115 samples confirmed to be the new variant. According to the health department, to date there

s part of the Reimagining Public Safety process, the Center for Policing Equity contracted the Matrix Consulting Group to conduct an analysis of field services and staffing at the Ithaca Police Department, which ultimately found the Ithaac Police Department is appropriately staffed and that there has not

been an increase in community-generated calls.

Specifically, the group looked at 911 calls and workload analysis, patrol staffing analysis, and call diversion and alternative service delivery analysis. The goal was to measure how much time patrol officers spent handling calls for service, how many hours of-

ficers are on duty for, compare the workload against the staffing’s capacity to handle it, and calculate how many officers need to be budgeted for.

Matrix found that in 2019, IPD responded to 12,217 calls for service that were community generated. When broken down by hour, 4 p.m. saw the highest volume of calls, and 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. was the busiest time. The early hours of the morning, 3 a.m. – 6 a.m. saw the fewest number of calls.

According to Matrix’s findings, there has been no indication of a consistent increase in calls from 2016-2020. Calls stayed the same in 2016 and 2017, fell 6% in 2018, climbed 4% in 2019 and dropped again by 4% in 2020. The group also analyzed response time, which saw 2020 have the slowest response time of the past five years with a median response time of 12 minutes. The shortest response time was 9.8 minutes in 2017, with 2016, 2018 and 2019 all hovering around the 10 minute mark.

There was also analysis of availability and workload, particularly the split between workload and proactive work.

Workload is the average amount of time committed to things like responding to community generated calls, on-duty training hours, onduty court time hours and administrative hours. Proactive time is essentially uncommit-

ted time where officers can do things like initiate calls for service. Matrix’s analysis found that using the average data for workload requirements and the total net available hours of the patrol officers, the proactive time is at about 59%.

In 2019, Matrix found that patrol officers initiated 3,924 incidents during proactive time, the majority of which are traffic stops and property checks. This is a decrease of 38% from the year prior, despite only a 4% increase in community generated workload. Matrix’s conclusion is that the current staffing of IPD is sufficient to handle the current workload and remain proactive at a high level.

Eric Rosario, the co-lead for the Reimagining task force, said this study was an effort to be as evidence driven as possible as they continue to work on the implementation of the Reimagining Public Safety plan.

“We thought it was important to have an evidence driven process, but not one that’s going to be dominated by one part of all the things we’re looking at,” he said. “It’s a comprehensive approach.”

The data will be used to inform the committees currently looking at shift assignment and beat design, training needs and budget.

Short-term rental legislation moving forward despite public tension

T

he short-term rental legislation in the town of Ithaca proved to be controversial at the town’s public hearing on Dec. 13. The legislation is a result of four years of work by the town to address issues related to short-term rentals, namely noise and nuisance from renters and people buying up multiple houses to use solely for rentals.

The legislation proposes requiring anyone doing a shortterm rental to acquire an operating permit from the town, which will prompt a safety check from the town code enforcement department. Additionally, there will be a limit on the number of days people can do unhosted short-term rentals, which is when you rent your entire house out and leave the property. Most residential areas of the town will have a 29-day limit for unhosted rentals in a calendar year. In the lakefront area, which Deputy Town Supervisor Bill Goodman said is a special residential zone that has always had a lot of rentals, the limit will be 245 days in a calendar year for unhosted rentals. There will be no limit on any property in the town for hosted rentals, which is where someone can rent out up to two bedrooms while they stay in their home. Anything more than two bedrooms in a hosted rental is considered a bed and breakfast, and owners must apply for a bed and breakfast permit.

The low number of unhosted days available for nonlakefront property rentals and the discrepancy between the two types of properties was a big sticking point for residents who spoke at the public hearing.

Nick Frazier, a resident on Trumansburg Road who uses both AirBnb and VRBO to rent out his house, called the legislation “classist and exclusionary.” He said short-term rentals have become essential to his income during COVID as his job has been severely impacted throughout the pandemic.

“Twenty-nine days of rental

is asinine unless you’re already a millionaire who can afford a house on the lake,” he said.

Resident Tim Dean agreed, and said while he’s sympathetic to neighbors who have had bad experiences with short-term renters, he thinks it’s unfair he’d be able to do 245 days of rental because his house is on the lake, while his neighbors a block or two get 29 days.

“It doesn’t feel fair, democratic or ethical,” he said. “It does feel classist.

This legislation is far too blunt.”

There were many residents who joined Frazier in telling the board about the ways short-term rentals help pay their bills.

Alexa Schmitz owns Hayts Chapel, a historic church built in 1847, and rents it out for short-term rentals. She took issue with the part of the legislation that only allows shortterm rentals out of owner-occupied properties or properties adjacent to the homeowner’s primary residence. Schmitz said she does not live in Hayts Chapel, or next door to it, meaning she’d be unable to continue to rent it out.

“Why prohibit all unhosted non-primary residences?”

Schmitz asked. “Why not limit to one per owner or to local owners?”

Megan Shay, who lives in Florida, agreed. She and her partner spend summers in Ithaca, but live in Florida the rest of the year since retiring.

She said using AirBnb has allowed them to maintain their Ithaca property in their retirement, and with 80-100 rentals a year, that property is about breaking even.

“We would be prohibited

from [renting] since we occupy our home for 120 days a year and not 185,” she said, referencing the residency requirement in the legislation.

The intent of that section of the legislation is to prevent people from buying up homes and renting them out, eliminating housing stock from people who actually live in town.

Randall Corey, another resident with a short-term rental, said the money he makes on his rental goes toward paying taxes and supporting local labor.

“The money I earn doesn’t go into my pocket, it doesn’t make me rich,” he said. “It goes to people who help me clean the house, help me maintain the house, help me repair the house. It’s going into people’s pockets who need the money.”

However, there were also supporters of the legislation in attendance. Rob Rosen, a resident, said having people coming and going all the time in short-term rentals is unsettling to neighbors.

“I support the purpose and intent of the legislation, I think it’s needed,” he said. “People have been experiencing nuisances. It’s sensible — it’s not perfect but it’s a start. Those regulations for short-term rentals are commonplace.”

Renwick Heights Road resident Barbara Koslowski agreed, and said she had encountered many problems in her neighborhood with shortterm rentals.

“We’ve had landscaping damaged with no attempt to reimburse neighbors for the damage, severe problems with parking, and there was a host, for all I know more than one, who said they were in town in their house but who were in fact elsewhere, so their guests were totally unregulated,” she said. “It’s very nice to have responsible people, but many guests are not. We need stricter regulations to prevent that from happening in the future.”

A handful of short-term rental owners agreed that the problems in Renwick Heights needed to be addressed, but suggested doing it through police reports and complaintoriented penalties.

After a long public hearing, the board engaged in a lengthy discussion about the points

raised and the next steps for the legislation.

Town Board member Eric Levine said he was impressed with the number of people who came to speak and that he didn’t want people to feel that their positions were not heard. He said while few of the arguments were new to them, he thought it would be wise to postpone the vote.

“One of the things I’d consider looking at is the number of days increased for unhosted rentals,” he said.

Meanwhile, outgoing board member Tee-Ann Hunter, whose term is up at the end of the year, said she’s not comfortable with the legislation because of the equity issues.

“I’ve felt that for a long time and had that reinforced tonight,” she said. “It would be my intention to vote against it.

I think it has some real problems but chief among them is the discrepancy between lakefront owners and people not fortunate enough to have lakefront property.”

Board member Pam Bleiwas, however, said she supports the legislation and that she thinks most of the criticism comes from misunderstanding.

“It seems like everyone’s dissatisfied with it and I wonder if there will ever be legislation people would be satisfied with,” she said. “Laws can be amended if they don’t work.”

Board member Pat Leary said she’s not happy about the number of days lakefront renters get, but didn’t see it as a big enough reason to vote against the whole piece of legislation.

“I don’t see what delaying this is going to do to resolve that difference of opinion,” she said. “Vote for this thing and if we have very targeted amendments about the number of days the board can take it up later, but we want the legislation in place.”

Town Supervisor Rod Howe said he was also in favor of moving forward with the knowledge they might have to make changes in a year based on what happens.

After more discussion, the board decided to update the effective dates in the legislation from Jan. 1 to April 1. The board will vote on that change on Dec. 29 at 11 a.m., which will finalize the legislation.

Police contracts

City owes police $1 million for back pay

T

he new police contract, approved

by Common Council earlier this month, will cost the city about $1 million in back pay to officers. The contract runs retroactive to 2014 and expires Dec. 31, 2023. The new contract will see a significant raise in salaries, with about an $11,000 bump in starting salaries for officers.

The previous contract expired at the end of 2011, and the city and police union have been operating without a new contract, and under the terms of the previous one, ever since. The two sides had been unable to come to an agreement and did seek arbitration for 2012 and 2013, but according to Mayor Svante Myrick, the police union ultimately surrendered those years after an arbitrator ruled the union had broken the rules of contract negotiations by refusing to negotiate and meet with a mediator.

In its simplest explanation, the back pay to officers from the new contract would be calculated by determining what the officers would have been making each of the years from 2014-2021 if the contract had been in place at the time, and then paying the difference between that and what they were actually making. However, Myrick said in the new contract the union agreed to pay the city back for part of their health insurance costs for those years, while the

city agreed to pay officers for their raises.

The union is paying 20% of the cost of their health insurance retroactive to 2014 back to the city, which comes out to about $1.5 million. Previously the city paid for 100% of the union’s health insurance plan, but under the new contract, all members will pay 20%. The city owes officers about $2.5 million in raises, so after subtracting the $1.5 million owed in health insurance backpay, the city owes officers $1 million in raises.

Myrick said the money will come in the form of one-time checks that will be issued to the officers in the next month.

Overtime will also be taken into effect, so each individual officer will be paid based on how much they actually worked during that period of time at each pay level. He said some officers will be getting checks up to $40,000-$50,000.

The money for that back pay will come from the general fund, Myrick said.

“It’s possible to do it because sales tax really rebounded,” he said. “It was actually higher than 2019.”

Additionally, pension costs were lower than expected this year because the stock market did well, which will also provide some of the funds. Some of it will also come from savings.

A 2021 Christmas Story

h, there it is. My house. And good old Buffalo Street. How could I ever forget it? And Christmas is on its way! Lovely, glorious, beautiful Christmas, around which the entire kid year revolved. Downtown Ithaca was prepared for its yearly bacchanalia of peace on earth and good will to all.

First nighters, packed earmuff to earmuff, jostled in wonderment at the Winter Lights Festival, omicron be damned. Wow, there it is in the store window, right there on the Commons.

The holy grail of Christmas gifts. The Red Ryder select-fire, air-cooled, magazine-fed AR-15 A2 semi-automatic rifle, just like in Congressman Massie’s Christmas card.

For weeks, I had been scheming to get my mitts on one of these fearsome blue-steel beauties. My fevered brain seethed with the effort of trying to come up with the infinitely subtle devices to implant the Red Ryder semi-automatic rifle indelibly into my parents’ subconscious. Well-planted specification pamphlets, relentless hint-dropping, and the mysterious repeated appearance of the object of all my earthly desires in our Amazon Prime cart.

All, apparently, to no avail.

So far, despite a doggedness that would have done Sir Ernest Shackleton proud, my parents had remained noncommittal on the subject, but this time my mother had slipped up. They were taking us to see Santa.

Santa! Yeah, I’ll ask Santa. Of course!

The big man. The head honcho. The connection. But wait...another brainstorm.

Why not go right to the top? Santa’s just a middleman. There’s an NRA-sponsored Republican majority on the Supreme Court now. Nine copies of a well-worded letter to the justices might just do the trick.

I can see Justice Barrett as she shares my magnum opus with the conservative majority… “It’s the amicus curiae brief I’ve been waiting for all my life,” she’ll say.

Rarely had the words flashed across my chromebook screen with such feverish fluidity. I knew I was sending the justices a masterpiece. The logic was irrefutable.

Maybe Chief Justice Roberts, in his ecstasy, would rule on the issue immediately.

One eternity later, Christmas had come. Officially.

We plunged into the cornucopia, quivering with the desire and the euphoria of unbridled avarice. Fifteen minutes of frenzied unwrapping had failed to yield so much as a popgun, and I struggled to hide a profound disappointment. How could those fools on the high court let me down? My plan had been foolproof. But wait...what’s that behind the desk? Against the wall over there? Maybe Santa Claus put it there. He did! Oh, it was beautiful. An Official Red Ryder AR-15 and a thousand rounds of 62gr FMJ 5.56x45 ammo! I could hardly wait to try it out. The greatest Christmas gift I had ever received or ever would receive.

That night, I lay in bed with my oiled, lightweight semi-automatic weaponry next to me in the blackness. All was right in the world. Gradually, I drifted off to sleep, pranging ducks on the wing, and getting off spectacular hip shots. Let’s see what Scut Farkus and that little turd Grover Dill would have to say now…

Bitcoin facility potentially opening at old Lansing power plant site

M

embers of the Lansing Advisory Committee on Power Plant Future (LAC-PPF) met with the Lansing Town Council on Dec. 15 to inform the council that the owners of the former Cayuga Power Plant, in conjunction with Cayuga Operating Company and Beowulf Energy, are possibly looking into establishing a Bitcoin (or another form of cryptocurrency) mining facility on site of the former power plant.

Hilary Lambert, vice president of LAC-PPF, along with fellow committee members Bert Blend and Bill Klepack, presented a report to the council at the meeting outlining why the committee believes cryptocurrency mining — specifically Bitcoin — is possibly being proposed, the possibly negative ramifications cryptocurrency mining presents, as well as its recommendation on the matter to the council for the near future.

In the report, the committee lists three reasons for why it believes a plan for a Bitcoin mining facility could be in the works.

The first piece of evidence was the Town of Somerset’s planning board’s approval for a site plan review submitted by Lake Mariner Data, LLC — a subsidiary of Beowulf Energy — for data center buildings to be used as a cryptocurrency facility on a site of another former power plant. (The approval was made on Aug. 5.) According to the report, the site for the project is the sister site to the Cayuga Power Plant, both of which are owned by Beowulf Energy and Heorot Power. Jerry Goodenough, former manager of the Cayuga Power Plant, is the vice president for development at Heorot Power and is in charge of both plants in addition to the data center that was originally proposed to be built on the Cayuga Power Plant site.

The committee also reported that, on Nov. 6. during a meeting with Scommunication, Assemblywoman Anna Kelles and Sue Roff, chairwoman of the LAC-PPF, Scommunication said that the owners of the Cayuga facility have been speaking with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and the Public Service Commission (PSC) since spring 2020 about installing a Bitcoin operation at the facility.

The committee’s report also included an attachment of an administrative and infrastructure services agreement between Be-

owulf Electricity & Data Inc. and TeraWulf Inc. that was filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in April 2021, which at the end of the document is a list of three locations that are designations of power requirements for Bitcoin mining. The Cayuga facility is listed as one of those three locations.

The report later delves into possible negative effects that Bitcoin mining could bring to the community. Those effects include increases in energy demand, thus resulting in a hike in electricity costs.

(For example, the Coinmint LLC facility operations in Plattsburgh spurred a 20-to40-percent increase in electricity costs depending on the season.) An increase in noise levels is another potential concern for residents.

The most significant impact could be to the environment, specifically the aquatic life of Cayuga Lake (if a Bitcoin operation chooses a lake-based cooling system rather than an A/C system), and increases in greenhouse gas emissions and electronic waste.

With all this in mind, the committee recommends the council get a headstart on protecting the municipality.

“Other cryptocurrency-impacted communities strongly recommend that communities facing the possibility of this type of operation must get out in front of the situation,” Lambert said. “You must educate yourselves about the pros and cons and pass ordinances in advance of a concrete proposal coming before you.”

Lambert suggested implementing a moratorium on cryptocurrency operation proposals as a possible route for the council to explore.

“This would provide the necessary breathing room for education, community discussion and putting protective ordinances in place,” she said.

Town Supervisor Ed LaVigne said he would be in favor of a moratorium right away, though there needs to be a “specific action plan” to support having one.

“If this is to block it, I don’t know if that’s appropriate,” LaVigne said. “Let’s find out if it is or not. … But if you put a freeze on this right now, you’re in front of it, so you don’t all the sudden look like you’re … reacting.”

he following letter to Santa didn’t arrive at the North Pole until too late for this year’s stockings: We’ve been living with an unusual gift in our part of Danby: mail delivery on Sundays. OK, we understand that the gift comes from the USPS and not from your workshop. We’re hoping you can bestow a gift on the USPS that will make it possible to resume delivery of Saturday’s mail on Saturdays.

Here’s the scoop: for months, mail for the “uphill Danby” part of the 14883 ZIPcode (Bald Hill, Comfort, Gunderman, and nearby Roads) has been arriving after dark, sometimes hours after sunset.

Very often, it’s long after residents have returned from work and other daily activities. Unless someone is willing to hike out to the mailbox at 7 or 8pm--in the affected, rural area, mailboxes can be a 5or 10-minute walk from the front door... in the dark and cold and snow--the mail doesn’t “arrive” until the next morning.

Please, Santa, can’t you figure a way to have mail delivered around mid-day, like it used to be?

The Spencer postmaster is aware of the problem and is apologetic. “Uphill” is only a mile or two from the West Danby valley as the crow flies, but it’s about 600 feet higher and only one or two unpaved goat trails connect the few mailboxes up

here to the far greater number of delivery locations down there.

Maybe, Santa, you could deliver an extra postal carrier to Spencer? Or maybe you can magically convince the USPS that the “uphill” parts of 14883 served by the Spencer Post Office would be better served from Ithaca in 14850?

After all, including /any/ part of Danby in the 14883 ZIPcode means that we get the phone book from — of all places — Elmira, that insurance companies think we’re in Tioga County, and that our junk mail is aimed at a completely different demographic than the 14850 where we pay taxes and do our marketing. Even you, Santa, can’t prevent junk mail...but can you help us get the /right/ junk mail?

A look back at the town of Ithaca’s early days in honor of its bicentennial.

his year, Ithaca turned 200 years old — on March 16, 1821, an act was signed by Gov. DeWitt Clinton officially establishing the town of Ithaca. The town was part of many different counties over the course of its early history after white settlers arrived, but it became progressively part of smaller and smaller political units until it ended up in Tompkins County. Initially, it was part of the town of Ulysses, where Trumansburg and Taughannock Falls are. However, Ithaca was the main part of that town and in 1821 it gained its own township.

(Editor’s note: While this is a story about the 200-year history of the town of Ithaca, it cannot go without mentioning that this land was inhabited by the Cayuga people, one of the Five Nations of the Haudenosaunee, for thousands of years prior to white settlement.)

Town historian David George said that at the time of its founding, Ithaca was a lot wilder than it is now, with more of a pioneer-type population. Turnpikes and roads were just beginning to take shape, connecting Ithaca to places like Dryden, Etna, Owego and Geneva.

“To go from Owego to Ithaca on the turnpike would take you eight hours on a stagecoach,” George said. “The same trip now would take 41 minutes by car.”

He said that at the time of its founding, Ithaca was essentially the wild west.

“Now we think of Tombstone, Arizona and the OK Corral, but at the time, that was Ithaca,” he said. “It was hard to get here and when you did get here, it was the frontier.”

He said that even though many of the people running the town in its early years were well-educated and could operate the town professionally, there were still remnants of those more wild times.

For instance, George tells the story of the town’s only public hanging in 1832. A man was to be executed for the murder of his wife on Feb. 2, 1832. The hanging was scheduled to take place near Fall Creek.

“It’s the kind of thing you see in the wild west movies,” George said. “The town gets all excited about the town hanging. It’s their entertainment.”

George said there were thousands of spectators present, with many arriving the previous day and camping out overnight.

The body of the executed was then stolen the next night.

“That story stood out to me,” George said. “People were showing up for hanging, riding stagecoaches and steam ships. So the

Ithaca of those days was certainly different from the Ithaca of today.”

THE TOWN’S EARLIEST DAYS

In 1825, the Erie Canal was finished, which proved to be a major boost for Ithaca, providing access to other cities through the lake and canal system.

“The population increased, and it was a pretty big event,” George said.

In the early to mid-1830s, a survey was done to look at industry at early Ithaca.

There were 36 “mechanical establishments,” 12 tanners, 31 boot and shoemakers, 13 tailors, 46 carpenters, 26 blacksmiths, 12 har-

mill, machine mill and others, many owned by familiar names such as Ezra Cornell and J. S. Beebe. There were plow manufacturers, machine foundries, woolen factories and a few hotels. Southwick makes particular note of the grandeur of the Clinton House, which still stands as a multi-use building in downtown Ithaca today.

It’s worth noting that the histories of the city of Ithaca and the town of Ithaca are largely intertwined, especially early on.

Back at the beginning of the town’s history, what’s now known as the city of Ithaca was part of the town. However, even back then it was distinctly called “the village,” and much like today, it was the busiest, most

( P h o t o : H i s t o ry C e n t e r i n To m p k i n s C o u n t y.) ness makers, 17 coach and wagon makers, 11 silversmiths, five gunsmiths, 12 copper and tinsmiths, seven millers, seven bakers, four plow makers, six stonecutters, six boat makers, and the list goes on and on.

The man who did the survey was named Solomon Southwick, and he said there were also two bookstores, 23 dry goods stores, two hardware stores, three jewelers, three druggists, 16 grocers, and a total of 49 “trading establishments” doing business successfully. Southwick also looked at the mills in town, such as a paper mill, flouring

commercial part of town. The city of Ithaca didn’t become a separate entity until 1888.

In 1894, there were 6,101 people living in Ithaca, split pretty evenly between men and women.

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS

In 1865, one of the biggest things to ever happen to Ithaca occurred — Cornell University was founded by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White. George quoted a book that called the founding of Cornell “profoundly significant to the life of IthaDe c e mb e r

ca.” The university is credited with the introduction of a more cosmopolitan atmosphere to the mostly rural town. There was an influx of newcomers with new ideas, and the arrival of internationally known poets, doctors, lawyers, architects and scientists.

“I would say that’s something today that people notice — that Ithaca is a very unusual small town in that it has many of the cultural opportunities and resources and diversity that you usually find only in a big city,” George said. “So that’s something that makes Ithaca special.”

George also notes a couple economic panics and depressions as impactful moments of Ithacan history, particularly in 1837 when the economy dropped, causing tough times for Ithaca businesses. Additionally, in 1873 there was an economic panic that bankrupted Ezra Cornell, followed by a five-year economic depression.

In 1880, the Ithaca Gun Company was founded, which produced the favorite gun of famed sharpshooter Annie Oakley.

In 1892, the Ithaca Conservatory of Music was founded, which later became Ithaca College.

Perhaps a lesser-known invention from Ithaca is the ice cream sundae. Supposedly, on April 3, 1892, a Sunday, Rev. John Scott paid his usual visit to the Platt & Colt Pharmacy in Ithaca. Shop owner Chester C. Platt was the treasurer for the church and met often with the reverend for conversation after Sunday services. On that particular day, Platt asked his fountain clerk for two bowls of vanilla ice cream. He then topped each with cherry syrup and a candied cherry. The treat was so popular with the two men, they decided to name it for the day it was created, giving birth to the first “cherry Sunday.”

In 1907, the Frontenac steamship boat burned up which symbolized the end of the steamship era and the end of Cayuga Lake as a transportation vehicle. The Frontenac, built in 1870, was the largest steamboat to ever operate on Cayuga Lake. It was 135 feet long, and as many as 350 passengers could be accommodated. On July 26, 1907, a special excursion kept the Frontenac overnight at Cayuga Landing. There were about 60 passengers on board when the boat caught fire at about 1 p.m. The boat’s captain tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the fire as passengers began putting on life preservers. The water was only about four feet deep, but strong gales and large waves made it difficult for women in large skirts to paddle or swim toward shore. The

Last year, I received a card — signed by the coach and by every player — thanking me for recognizing their efforts in print.

He told me, “I believe that a ‘Thank You’ can go a lot farther than they realize.”

In McNair’s words, “There is a lot of gratitude to go around. We owe thanks to the parents, the boosters, the administration... These are some tough times, and they are there for us through all of it.” He added, “I always tell the players that they are representing their families, their community and themselves, and they should never forget what an honor it is to do that.

For me, it’s a great experience to be a part of their lives, and to coach them at the varsity level. This is a fine batch of student athletes, and I’m very proud of them.” ● ● ●

wenty years ago, I wrote with some regularity about Ithaca High basketball player Lester McMair, who told me he planned to do whatever it took to keep his grades up and play collegiate hoops. He did just that (at Buffalo State, before playing some semi-pro ball), and now — in his third season as the Little Red’s varsity basketball coach — he brings a boatload of credibility when helping his players keep their priorities straight.

Ithaca is six games into an 18-game season, and in Lester’s words, “Our 2-4 re-

cord does not reflect how good we are as a team.” He added, “It has been one of those crazy seasons, and we have been dealing with some injuries and some sickness, but we’re trying to stay healthy and focused as we approach the holidays.”

This year’s team features five seniors (Khyriyahn Johnson, Aaron Macolini, Kaiden Malpasso, Sai’d Galloway and MJ Thomas), and McNair says “Our seniors are doing a great job, leading in many different ways and I couldn’t ask for a better group.” Lester has been coaching many of

what moves them forward, and we share what it can do for their lives.”

In fact, this year’s Little Red are steeped in good examples, as Tim Wood — a high school teammate of McNair and a Cornell grad — is helping out as an assistant.

Karije Henderson — a 2021 Ithaca High grad and former player — is volunteering his services while taking online college courses, and McNair says, “Having been a teammate, Karije has a great connection with the players, and I tell him all the time that he will make a great coach someday.”

Congratulations to Ithaca College’s Nick Bahamonde on picking up another All-America honor when he was named to The Associated Press NCAA Division III First Team. The junior kicker was previously selected to the American Football Coaches Association First Team.

Bahamonde led all of Division III in field goal percentage with 18 successful kicks in 22 attempts. The 18 field goals set an IC school record, which included four in one game (against Union on Nov. 6 to tie another school mark). Showing off his long-range prowess, Bahamonde connected on three field goals this season from more than 40 yards out. He also went 32 of 34 on extra point attempts.

Earlier this season, Bahamonde was named Liberty League Special Teams Player of the Year, Liberty League FirstTeam and D3football.com First-Team All-Region.

boat eventually grounded on the eastern shore, and five women and two children died in the accident.

Steamboat travel came to an end shortly thereafter.

INTERESTING RESIDENTS

For a small town in upstate New York, Ithaca has had its fair share of interesting folks call it home, often drawn in by opportunity at the colleges. Carl Sagan, E. B. White and Vladimir Nabokov are some of the most well-known. But outside of those brought here to teach or study at Cornell, some of Ithaca’s earliest residents have interesting stories of their own.

George cites the Treman family as one of the most important residents of Ithaca and Tompkins County. Abner Treman was a captain with the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He received a 600-acre lot in 1791 in the Central New York Military Tract. It was crossed by two creeks on the west side of Cayuga Lake and proved to be a good place for a mill. Members of the Treman family established a hardware business in 1857. Other

members were among the organizers of the Ithaca Gas Light Company and Ithaca Water Works. Robert H. Treman State Park is located in the town, donated by Robert and Laura Treman for the creation of the first state park in the Ithaca area.

One of the Tremans also married silent movie star Irene Castle.

“She was the most famous movie star in Ithaca,” George said. “That couple probably made quite a splash at the time.”

Andrew DeWitt Bruyn held many jobs in the town of Ithaca in its early years, in-

cluding justice of the peace, representative of the New York State Assembly, a trustee of Ithaca, president of the village, county supervisor, judge, and congressman in the United States Congress. George tells the story of the young congressman being carried into Congress while he was ailing to make a tie-breaking vote, shortly before his death. Bruyn had originally been convinced to come to Ithaca by his cousin, Gen. Simeon DeWitt, one of the founders of Ithaca.

Despite the many changes in Ithaca over the past 200 years, George attributes Ithaca’s longevity to something that’s been here almost since the beginning — Cornell University.

“It’s the major player in Ithaca, a major employer in Ithaca,” he said. “It makes the ups and downs in the economy have less of an impact on Ithaca so the town can make it through tough times more easily than other places. Education is a pretty steady business.”

These days, the town of Ithaca is home to over 22,000 people. Parts of Cornell University remain in the town, as well as Ithaca College. Buttermilk State Park has joined Treman State Park as a place of natural beauty for residents to enjoy. The town works to regulate short-term rentals as visitors come to Ithaca to enjoy the lake. The more industrious days of the 1820s are gone, and education and healthcare are now the biggest employers locally. A lot has changed in the 200 years since the town’s rough and tumble beginnings, but many of the things that brought people to Ithaca back then — opportunity, culture and natural beauty — remain.

Local old growth forests offer biodiversity, carbon storage “It’s been a deeply touching experience to spend time among the tree elders. In this time where uncertainty is the common denominator of almost every aspect of our lives, these old friends provide, aside from their magnificent beauty, a sense of reassurance and trustworthiness.”

hese are the words of Henrike Burton after spending time in old growth forest areas in New York’s Alleghany State Park and Zoar Valley this year. Here in the Finger Lakes, we are fortunate that small areas of old growth forests (OGF) remain and can be visited.

Some include the Fischer Preserve in Newfield, the Bock-Harvey Preserve in Enfield, and by Punch Bowl Lake, about a mile-and-a-half upstream from Watkins Glen State Park’s entrance.

These old growth forests are what remain of the vast virgin forests of eastern North America estimated to have covered up to 950 million acres. As Bruce Kershner and Robert Leverett wrote in “The Sierra Club Guide to the Ancient Forests of the Northeast,” early European colonists described the forest covered landscape as “’the howling wilderness, a place that threatened their survival. It was dark and foreboding. It harbored wild animals — and Indians.”

In contrast to colonists, the Indigenous people lived in harmony with the forests of great and younger trees. In only 200 years, the settlers and loggers cut down and burned “the vast virgin tracts of forest that

had survived since the last Ice Age,” Kershner and Leverett wrote. However, isolated parcels of OGF escaped destruction due to inaccessible lands or poor habitat for timber (Zoar Valley, cliff edges and faces); being old public or institutional parks and lands (Adirondack and Catskill State Forest Preserves, Allegany State Park); and private estates kept uncut, (Minnewaska State Park).

A common useful definition for OGF offered by Kershner and Leverett is where most trees that shade the rest (canopy trees) are ancient, regardless of minor disturbances by humans, such as selective logging and grazing. They say that eastern OGFs have canopy trees at least 150 years old, an age at which bark, trunk and forest structure develop features markedly different from younger trees and forests. But some OGF are very small, due to rugged growing conditions, like the gnarly red cedars up to 30 feet tall on the cliffs by Taughannock State Park’s largest waterfall.

They’re possibly 300 or more years old.

Some OGF characteristics are trunks 30 inches or more in diameter for most native species: oaks, sugar and red maples; eastern hemlock and white pines; white ash; American beech, etc. Examples of dwarf old growths are black birch, red spruce, and pitch pine when they grow in severe habitats like cliffs, summits, bogs, steep rocky slopes, barrens, and sand dunes.

fter a transition from one authoritarian Afghani regime to another, “the police came to our house to take my father to prison,” Amin Nawabi, the subject of the animated documentary film “Flee,” said. His father asked them to let him get his jacket, and they permitted him to do so. “I’m not a threat; I’ll be back soon,” he told his family. “My mother, two sisters, my brother, and me were allowed to visit him for about three months, then he disappeared. In those days, thousands of Afghanis were arrested and disappeared,” states Amin, speaking from a therapist’s couch.

“Eventually, my family decided we should leave for Russia, which was the only country which would take us,” he said. “We barely made it to the Kabul airport in time.”

The therapist asks, “What are some of the earliest things you remember?”

“I usually felt a little different. I liked to wear my sisters’ dresses,” Amin responds.

One of the factors which makes “Flee” fairly unique is that the filmmaker interweaves artistically compelling animation with powerful archival footage, such as when an Afghani military leader warns that the US may be in that conflict much longer than its leaders expect.

A viewer becomes acutely aware of how effective animation can be in a situation depicting the escape by a group of refugees trudging through a snow covered forest.

A man implores the group to “slow down,” as his mother is sick and can’t keep up. A

trafficker tells the man to “kill her.” Seeing no sign of compliance, the trafficker pulls out his gun and says, “I’ll shoot her myself.”

Eventually, the refugees are herded into a large metal container which is jammed between similar cubes as it’s placed in the hold of a boat. As if the devil was the trip-planner, they encounter a fierce Baltic Sea storm, and as large waves threaten to overwhelm the refugees and the boat, one can sense the smell of fear and vomit as they permeate the space.

“I think [traffickers] are a band of psychopaths,” notes the adult Amin. Eventually, with the assistance of a better plan, as well as a more user-friendly trafficker (who got him a ticket on Ukraine’s National Airline), Amin made it to Western Europe. Several years later, he was able to pursue his studies at a major American university.

There are a number of other significant scenes in “Flee,” and it’s a valuable film to experience. Director Jonas Pohler Rasmussen and Executive Producer Riz Ahmed are to be commended for their substantial efforts in making the film, which won an Audience Award at Sundance earlier this year.

In a brief exchange I was fortunate enough to have with the director after a Q&A at The Landmark in West LA, I followed up on his comments about how Amin had informed his friend, Rasmussen, that the experience of being involved with making the film, and then watching it, helped him (Amin) deal with psychological issues he’d kept bottled up for many years.

I also noted that screenings of “Flee” could be valuable educational experiences for American, EU, & British policymakers who might become more empathetic to calls for assistance for individuals and families seeking safety, sustenance and a better life. The director smiled. Clearly, he was aware of the range of impacts “Flee” could continue to have on viewers.

AN ECLECTIC MIX State of the Art Gallery’s Annual Juried Show brings in a mix of Ithacan and non-local artists showing off work in a variety of mediums.

ecember and January traditionally bring catch-all group exhibitions and holiday sales to Ithaca’s leading galleries. Alongside shows at the Gallery at South Hill, the Ink Shop Printmaking Center, and the Community School of Music and Arts, this year’s “Annual Juried Show” at the State of the Art Gallery (SoAG) features work diverse in media and approach. The national open-call show, which runs through Jan. 2, was juried by gallery members, with Rick Pirozzolo of Elmira’s Arnot Museum serving as prize judge.

Each artist is represented with a single piece.

Unsurprisingly, the pandemic era brings a novel wrinkle. While last year’s annual was all virtual, this year’s edition attempts an undeniably awkward in-person/online hybrid model.

While all the accepted artworks are being “shown” on the gallery website, a number of

pieces — most originally in traditional physical media — are not physically present at the gallery. Rather a screen displays the missing works, which include four of the five prize winners. (The show, typically for such an event, was judged from digital images.)

Those of us that value seeing art in the flesh will be disappointed. Nonetheless, there is much of interest on view at the gallery’s West State Street location. The mix of Ithacan and nation-wide artists is a particular point of interest.

Several artists here will be familiar to regular local art viewers. Barbara Mink, a former SoAG member, contributes “Gorge Walk Spring,” a characteristically layered, effervescent ink and acrylic abstract canvas. Using similar media on paper, local poet-painter Laura Glenn offers a poetically undecipherable scriptorium in “Unriddling.” Marjorie Hoffman’s sculptural mosaic “Chrysanthemum” is distinctive and playful — bringing us up close to her blossom.

Three smaller paintings in oil are among the more engaging pieces here. Annemiek Haralson’s “Storm Over the Plains” hits a mood, with its alien purple-blue clouds looming a shadowed skyline and grassy foreground expanse. Lined in pale pink, two lightning branches form the perfect accent. Rendered in red and crimson, James Cogbill’s “Transition” is notable for its blend of architectonic abstraction and mindful paint texture. In ochre, white, and purples, Julie Waltz-Stalker’s “Bury it Deep” is another lusciously painted non-figurative piece — more extroverted and layered.

Carol Spence (full disclosure: a former art teacher of mine at Ithaca High School) presents “Spring Break,” rendered in predominantly pale hues and incorporating acrylic, monoprint, and collaged magazine text. The piece, characteristic of Spence’s locally exhibited work, partakes of what might be thought of as a New Age update on fin de siècle symbolism: a mysterious female figure, vaguely pretentious imagery, mismatched colors and textures.

Watercolors, drawings, prints, and illustration have a more muted but occasionally highly compelling presence. Sam Vann’s watercolor “Prince Edward Albatross” is perhaps the most memorable of several animal-themed works on paper here: the bird’s white body silhouetted against the realistically detailed earth on which it lies. Anna Pausch’s black-on-white woodblock print “Mums Gone Wild” is both effusive and precise. “Kamani Tree at Makua Study no.36,” a digital rendering by Stephen Yuen, has the punchy color separated feel of (some) traditional printmaking.

Teresa Yatsko, who has shown in several local group shows over the past few years, explores the “altered book” genre. “Beyond Her Malignancy,” a characteristic work, incorporates found and manipulated books, what appears to be an original handmade book, as well as rocks and tree pieces. A photographic cutout of a bald, bare-backed muscular man striking a pose with raised arms invites viewers into this diorama without a box – full of barely decipherable text and fairy tale evocation. There’s something kitschy but undeniably compelling about her work.

Recently voted “Best Gallery in Ithaca” by readers of this publication, the State of the Art has long been the city’s consummate “middle” gallery: middlebrow, middle class, middle-ofthe-road. Always well presented and generally technically able, members’ exhibitions at the SoAG tend to fall into familiar ruts. A monthly diet of often two or three person spotlights and “theme” group shows rarely highlights the cooperative’s most ambitious members in the depth they deserve.

I have — to the admitted displeasure of some — criticized the gallery along these lines in these pages. I stand by these remarks. More generously though, the gallery serves as a sort of foundation for the local art “world”: one that affords its members a measure of professionalism and security in a community that rewards art in sentimental appreciation but rarely in either deep understanding or consistent financial sustenance.

In addition to the SoAG’s annual juried photography show (this year’s is scheduled for June), their general (non-photo) juried show provides a welcome breather for regular visitors. Viewers interested in getting a broad view of the varieties of art made and exhibited in Ithaca would do well to also visit the group shows at the Ink Shop and the CSMA, which continue through late January.

cedars reach the greatest age of northeastern trees, sometimes up to 1,700 years.

Many eastern trees don’t live more than 400+ years, unlike much older western giants like sequoias, Sitka spruces, redwoods, and western hemlock. Additional characteristics include bizarre tree shapes, rich growth of moss, fungi and lichens, large logs,; and huge trees with dead tops and many cavities.

Jason Gorman, Finger Lakes Land Trust preserve manager, said, “Birds and other animals raise their young in old growth tree cavities, including rare or uncommon species. A favorite thing of mine to

do in old growth forests is to just be with these large old trees. I try imagining those who’ve walked under them… Indigenous people and others stopping to commune or for a drink. While visiting California’s old growth redwoods, I strongly felt humility and so incredibly small. I believe that many more people need to experience that, and hope that they’ll appreciate these incredible trees.”

Scientific studies show that OGFs contain more native biodiversity than other habitats. Larger OGFs contain many species that can’t live elsewhere, like the northern spotted owl and marbled murrelet. Forests are communities that take generations to develop and are so much more than planted trees. Protecting OGFs

and others to age and change without human “managing” allows more complex biological relationships and biodiversity to continue developing.

Another crucial benefit of OGFs is capturing and storing much more carbon than younger forests. An Old Growth Forest Network article states, “Forests cannot store large amounts of carbon without large trees. A global study done by 98 researchers measuring over five million forest trees found that the largest 1% of trees equaled over 50% of total carbon containing biomass. Even numerous small and medium trees couldn’t equal the biomass in a few large diameter trees.

The study “concluded that forests should … conserve large diameter trees and trees with potential to become large.

Unfortunately, a study led by Lindenmayer (2012) found that large old trees are declining worldwide, often intentionally removed during logging, land clearing, agricultural intensification, and fire management… When forests are harvested, more carbon remains in the atmosphere, both from declined carbon capture by living trees and from carbon released from forest soil after logging… Increased carbon (released) resulting from harvesting is five times the amount released from fire, insects, wind storms, development, and drought combined. If current management practices continue, world forests will achieve only half their biological carbon sequestration potential. Earth’s carbon sink could be substantially increased if forests were managed with carbon sequestration as a goal.”

Unfortunately, widespread misinformation states that planting trees is important for lessening climate change. Aspiration Financial incorrectly advertises that when a tree is planted each time you swipe their card, you are being carbon neutral. What is crucial is protecting the oldest forests worldwide, which involves avoiding consumption of products that come from their destruction.

Many OGFs aren’t protected from destructive activities. The Finger Lakes Land Trust (FLLT) regionally protects forests and other natural and agricultural lands with many preserves. The FLLT buys selected properties, receives donated ones, and arranges conservation easements with landowners to protect lands long-term with development limits agreed upon by owners and the FLLT. The Old Growth Forest Network’s (OGFN) mission is to protect at least one OGF or other forest in every U.S. county.

Each forest must be freely open to visitors.

The OGFN now has 130+ forests in 24 states. In Newfield, the Fischer Preserve, a Cornell Natural Area, is a member.

The Fund for Wild Nature disperses donations to numerous small grassroots groups nationwide that “get things done.”

They work to protect OGFs, wild lands, numerous wildlife species and threatened habitats, because “wild areas are increasingly rare and under relentless pressure from varied threats.” (TFWN) Donations to these organizations enable them to protect more OGFs and other habitats.

A

s the kids say, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony-Columbia-Marvel-Pascal Pictures, 2021, 148 min.) is off the chain. When I wasn’t laughing, I had a big goofy grin on my face for most of the time.

If you’ve been onboard through the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb web-slinger movies, you won’t believe what you’re in for, so I’ll be as brief and spoiler-free as I can. You would not thank me for divulging these secrets. Picking up from the ending of “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019), the whole world now knows that Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is ol’ Web-Head, so he asks Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to cast a spell to make the world forget him. But something goes wrong and many of Spidey’s past foes come tumbling into New York City from the endless multiverse.

Got all that?

Thanks to a great script by “Community” vets Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers and the series’ director Jon Watts, the first half is breathless comedy and action, and the second half really ups the life-anddeath stakes of these kinds of stories. I really appreciated that MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) were part of the dilemma and not relegated to the sidelines of the story. And since he’s my very favorite Spidey bad guy, I was thrilled to see Alfred Molina back as Doctor Otto Octavius from Raimi’s “Spider-Man 2” (2004), the best film in that trilogy.

At the end, I turned to Constant Companion and said, “I have no notes.” For the wall-crawler’s millions of fans, “SpiderMan: No Way Home” is perfect comicbook entertainment.

y own preconceptions got the better of me this week. I assumed that Steven Spielberg’s

“West Side Story” (20th Century StudiosAmblin-TSG Entertainment, 2021, 156 min.) would modernize and update the classic musical. But after one of Spielberg’s typically magnificent opening shots that passes over twisted metal and rises higher and higher to reveal a huge construction site, when I finally saw the old-fashioned bubble-light police cars and the street décor, I realized that Spielberg’s version was a perfect recreation of New York City in the middle of the 20th century.

Spielberg’s first-ever musical is no carbon copy of Robert Wise’s 1961 Best Picture, a Broadway legend and bebop jazz take on Romeo and Juliet. He and screenwriter Tony Kushner (“Angels in America”) brought in executive producer Rita Moreno, beefed up her role as the kids’ only maternal figure, addressed transgender issues that would never have occurred to Wise’s creative team, and best of all, they didn’t translate the Sharks gang’s Spanish into English for the cheap seats.

Believe me, you know what the characters are saying.

Time and space prohibit listing the names of a new, talented cast of kids. Suffice to say, they do justice to the show’s enduring legacy. I like to think of a whole new generation of kids playing Tony and Maria and Anita and Bernardo in their high school musical and falling in love with theater. It’s a gift that keeps on giving.

ave you been to Jerlando’s? It’s smack dab on a corner on the main street of downtown Watkins Glen, (and has another site in Montour Falls) just about a half-hour drive from Ithaca. It’s family owned and one of the best restaurants in our area. Pardon the food metaphor but the proof is in the pudding and Jerlando’s has specialized in serving Italian-American cuisine since 1983 — an admirable track record in any environment.

The interior of the restaurant is decorated to suggest an outdoor Italian garden, with stone walls separating dining areas, as well as painted walls of imaginary surrounding buildings, trees, bushes, and flowers.

The menu is huge, with a large number and variety of items. For this review I tried to order something from each major heading.

A dozen different appetizers, ($6.99$12.99) range from basic mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, and brussels sprouts to steak and cheese pazotti.

If you’re in the mood to eat relatively lightly, the salad selections ($9.99-$13.99) include the basics such as Caesar, chef and grilled chicken, as well as four original concoctions.

Among the dozen Pasta selections, I had the linguini shrimp scampi ($18.99).

Six medium-size shrimp were incorporated into a large portion of linguini in a white wine and understated garlic and butter sauce. It was a most enjoyable version of linguini alfredo.

In the pollo (chicken) section I enjoyed grilled chicken cantonese ($18.99.) The char-grilled chicken breast was covered with a generous portion of a creamy garlic sauce with lots of chopped tomatoes, all baked in a mozzarella cheese sauce. Rich and delicious.

Oven baked dishes include Italian basics like ziti and meatballs, manicotti, stuffed peppers, mushroom ravioli, and eggplant parmigiana. I ordered “Jerlando’s Lasagna” ($16.99) which was billed as the chef ’s original recipe. It was, in the sense that I’m used to middle layers of dough 20 T

and here the middle was composed of soft chewy cheese, a different texture but very pleasant.

Cioppino is a fish stew that originated in San Francisco in the mid-1800’s and is now featured on some Italian-American menus. If you’ve ever had Bouillabaisse, a French favorite, it’s basically the same thing. It starts with a tomato-based sauce, or broth, mixed with wine, herbs, and spices, and then has all sorts of fish and shellfish added. At Jerlando’s, in the pesce (fish) section of the menu you’ll receive scallops, mussels, shrimp, haddock, calamari, clams, green peppers, garlic, red onion, celery and tomatoes accompanied by a generous portion of crusty bread for dunking ($23.99).

Speaking of bread, every entrée is served with a delicious individual loaf of thick bread spread with margarine (in response to my query I was told some people are allergic to butter) and garlic and sprinkled with oregano.

Other categories include hot sandwiches, from the charbroiler (which includes a half-dozen burgers), and a small just for kids section.

There are all kinds of different pizza combinations. You can choose small ($13.99) or large ($15.99) and then select from 16 different toppings. The toppings are $2.49 on a small pizza and $3.49 on a large.

Most entrées come with a large salad which includes fresh lettuce, sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, onion rings, and ripe olives and a choice of a dozen dressings.

There are four Desserts. The tiramisu was rich and thick, however the apple cobbler was rather ordinary. It was warmed and served with a scoop of whipped cream and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Both the apples and the cream seemed like they came out of a can and were pleasant enough.

The wines by the glass ($5.75-$6.25) are served with a generous pour and include a comprehensive selection of wines from around the world, including New York.

Jerlando’s is one of the best restaurants in our area, offering an extensive selection of large portions of wonderful food served by a thoughtful, efficient staff.

Would I drive to Watkin’s Glen just to eat there? I have, I do, and I will.
