The Ithaca Times Best of Ithaca Readers Poll is one of the longest such annual surveys in the United States. Now in our 36th year, the original and first began at the San Francisco Bay Guardian 43 years ago. Veterans to BOI know that we’re always changing up the categories, so that no shoe, sub sandwich or Sycamore tree can ever get complacent and secure. From year to year, you never know who will win what, and who we’ll be calling with good news.

BEST COMMUNITY C E L E B R AT I ON & B E S T F E S T I VA L I T H A C A F E S T I VA L Ithaca Festival’s 2018 Executive Director Josh Dolan told us, “This is really a testament to all of the community members who come out to be part of the parade from our Mad Max crew to the Belly Dancers, these are the folks that make our festival so rich and colorful. Also all the musicians! Music is such an integral part of what makes Ithaca special and there is so much talent here. Whether it’s a big name like the Blind Spots or Stone Cold Miracle playing at Bernie Milton Pavilion to our buskers like Rachel Beverly or the performers at the Ithaca Underground stage, our music here is as vibrant as it is diverse and a real celebration of our community.”

CHICAGO (HANGAR)
CORNELL HOCKEY
Hangar Artistic Director (and director of Chicago) Michael Barakiva says, “I am delighted and honored that the Hangar production of Chicago won the Best Theater Production. Our production was a valentine to vaudeville, and a real community effort, from the extraordinary tech staff that has 48 hours to turn over our productions, to the cast that featured Broadway pros alongside members of our newly minted Young Professional Company, to our year-round staff, which is the backbone of the company.”
Cornell University Hockey, the men’s and women’s teams, both found ample success last year, with each team eclipsing 20 wins and the men’s even making the NCAA tournament before bowing out. Both will look to continue those trends this year, with the support of Ithacans behind them. “Cornell Hockey has always provided the Ithaca and Cornell community with memorable sporting events. The school spirit at the games is the perfect combination of the relationship of students faculty and Ithaca and surrounding area. Our crowd on game night is one of the best in college hockey,” Men’s Hockey Coach Mike Schafer said. “We’re very grateful for the community’s support over the years, and to those who voted for us in the Best of Ithaca poll.”

BEST RADIO SHOW Reggae Explosions
BEST RADIO SHOW REGGAE EXPLOSIONS
Photos: Casey Martin
We caught up with the host of WICB’s “Reggae Explosions,” Michael Miller AKA “DJ Micah” after a recent Thursday shift on the air. “Wow, Best Radio Program! I am honored and grateful to do it. I’d like to thank my listeners for staying true and tuning in each and every week.” When Miller moved to Ithaca from San Diego back in 2003 to raise his kids in Ithaca, he had been immersed in the reggae world since his late teens, and has toured with reggae legends Steel Pulse, Morgan Heritage, Mighty Diamonds, Burning Spear, Lee Scratch Perry and many others. Even though he had “zero DJ’ing experience let alone being a radio host,” within a year of his arrival here, he was asked to take over the show. “It’s been 14 years now and it seems like it all started just yesterday,” says Miler. “Ithaca has been so good to me and my family. It is a true honor to represent Ithaca and play Roots Reggae Music for the masses in Ithaca and Internationally through iheartradio. I get messages for requests and shout outs from as far as South Africa, Tijuana Mexico, up and down the West coast and of course all over Ithaca. “I’d like to thank WICB’s previous Station Manager Chris Wheatly for guiding me along the technical radio side of things. And I don’t want to leave out a few of my friends that have
sat in when I haven’t been able to be there: David Solid Gould with Fresh Roots Radio, Sistah Ana, Jed Ashton, Jesse Hill, Kevin Kinsella, James Neidhardt, and Josh Bryant. Thanks again Ithaca, much love and gratitude.”

K I T C H E N T H E AT R E Producing Artistic Director M. Bevin O’Gara gave a “Whoop” and started an impromptu dance party in the Kitchen Theatre office upon hearing the news. “The Kitchen is thrilled to receive this honor for the first time. We are grateful for our community--both audience and artists-who are excited by the work we put on stage and who value the important conversations this work sparks.” O’Gara is thrilled about the Kitchen’s 2018-19 season: “a dynamic lineup of complex characters, new ideas, and unexpected questions. A coming of age musical, to a delicate drama about suburbia, a new take on The Odd Couple, a stunning story of a young deaf man finding his place in the world, and more. “This season is one of big questions, invigorating storytelling, and definitely not to be missed. We are so proud to be able to bring first class theatre to Ithaca. Thank you to this terrific community.”
Ithaca’s monthly gallery walking tour serves as the best way to become accustomed with the city’s extensive local art environment. Each month, around 20 vendors, galleries and curators open their doors, ensuring there’s a little something for everybody during your walk around. As you can tell by the name, these are held on the first Friday of every month; for the rest of the year, the scheduled dates are Oct. 5, Nov. 2 and Dec. 7 from 5-8 p.m.
BEST ART EXHIBIT JOHNSON ART MUSEUM “We’re so happy to be thought of as among the ‘Best of Ithaca,’” said Ellen Avril, the Johnson’s chief curator and curator of Asian art. “We strive to offer new exhibitions and programs year-round representing a wide range of topics. Whether you’re new to town,
a longtime resident, or just passing through, we want to create memorable experiences with every visit. All are welcome, and admission is always free!”
BEST OPEN MIC LOT 10 Lot 10’s open mic night is a true open mic night, in that there’s no way to know what to expect. Held on Tuesdays, it could be a slam poetry session, or a cover song, or a comedy set, or anything else. One of the most exciting aspects of the night is the process and results aren’t sure when the night begins, yet it almost always turns out entertaining. “One of the coolest is when somebody captures the audience,” co-owner Justin McGuire said. “When you can watch a crowd of people who are talking and laughing, and all of a sudden a performer silences them and they are captivated, that’s what I like the most, whether it’s music or comedy or something else.”

BEST BARBERSHOP M I K E Y D AV I D ’ S Owner Joseph David told us, “As owner and one of three master barbers at Mikey David’s Barber Shop, I must admit I am overwhelmed with receiving such recognition of my business! We truly owe this honor to our customers. We work very hard at trying to get our customers’ confidence. This shop is a gathering place where we want our customers to feel it belongs to them. As they often enter as strangers, they will hopefully leave as friends! “We enjoy developing relationships with our customers, and over the years it has been a special pleasure watching them grow and being a part of their lives. In our business, one very important aspect of being successful is listening to our clients and we try very hard to accomplish this. “We sincerely hope to continue our success and serve the community as my family has in the tradition of barbering since 1924! Thank you!”

We feel we’re pretty conscientious of doing that, and hopefully we are doing that.”

One of the newest pizza places in Ithaca has won the hearts of many a pizza-seeking resident, as Franco’s Pizzeria claimed the award for most sumptuous slice in the city. The restaurant has only been open since spring 2017, but Franco Evola, who owns the spot with his brother Salvatore, said their work so far has been rewarded with ample patronage and support from Ithacans. “For us, it’s great, it’s been a great start and the people have been great,” Franco said. “We’ve gotten so much support from everyone in Ithaca.”
John O’Leary at the Ithaca Ale House said, “We are honored once again to receive this award. It is always very flattering and satisfying when an award is selected by the public. All our kitchen staff work extremely hard to produce a fresh and consistent product. They take pride in any recognition and will be thrilled to learn of this award. Thank you.”

B E S T R E S TA U R A N T SERVICE J U S T A TA S T E Jennifer Irwin at Just a Taste told us, “I am so proud of our staff, many have been at the restaurant for so long and stayed so committed. Stan and I feel blessed. Thanks gang!”
BEST INSPIRED DINING GOLA OSTERIA “Many thanks to the community for supporting us. It means a lot! Positive support has been key to our success. We are working hard to expand the Gola brand across Ithaca now that we offer full service catering, panini and coffee at Cafe Gola, and of course dinner at Gola Osteria. It is an exciting time for us and we can’t wait to share it with our amazing community!” says Lovisa Johanson, Administrative Officer, Event Planning and Marketing.
“We’d like to thank first our parents, grandparents, sister and brother in law who together provided an exceptional amount of support, loyalty, and faith. Without them the dream to open a restaurant could not have been made a reality. We’d like to express great thanks to our staff for making the place run on a daily basis and for their dedication during the difficulties of opening a new restaurant. Laura Phillips (FOH manager) for her incredible dedication and passion, as well as our original fans and clients from our pop ups, Chris O’Brien from Lincoln Street Diner, and the community of Ithaca as a whole for coming out each and every night, allowing this whole endeavor to carry on.”

BEST NEW R E S TA U R A N T BICKERING TWINS According to co-owner and chef Kevin Adelman, Bickering Twins was “born out of our love for great tasting food, cooking and particular curiosity around Latin American cuisine.” Bickering Twins began as a small catering company “and with the support of the community was able to grow to include weekly pop-up restaurants and ultimately the brick and mortar. We’ve been open just four months and have been flattered by the positive reception and community support. “It’s been an extremely exciting adventure and we thank Ithaca for choosing Bickering Twins as best new restaurant!” says Adelman.

BEST MASSAGE THERAPIST AV I B A U M G O L D Baumgold has been massaging the stress out of Ithacans for a decade, mostly working on his own out of his house, but additionally picking up one day a week at Rasa Spa and the Integrative Oral Health office each. “It feels great, I’ve been a massage therapist for 10 years here in Ithaca, I feel like I’ve touched many people in Ithaca,” Baumgold said. “I’m surprised, and honored.”
A dancer and acrobat as well, Baumgold said he’s always been passionate about movement, and understanding the body through movement is what initially brought him to the practice. He said unlocking access to movement for his patients is one of the primary highlights of his job.
BEST DENTIST DR. IRA KAMP Kamp’s unconventional dentistry practice triumphs again, as he did in 2016 as well. Kamp combines dentistry with a certification in acupuncture, and focuses on an integrativecentric approach to dental health. The breadth of Integrative Oral Health’s services includes sleep therapy, natural remedies, massage therapy, acupuncture and nutritional guidance.

JOHN SIMON “What a cool surprise!” says Simon. “It’s particularly poignant because I stopped doing my weekly Thursday show when WVBR switched formats in mid-January, and I seemed to have a real cross-section of happy listeners back then.” Simon, who also plays in the bands Radio London and The Yardvarks, has been playing the hits on WVBR’s “Rockin’ Remnants” since August of 2003. He was recruited by co-host John Rudan, “who knew me because I was always calling in to make requests or win stuff or talk about the music. We suddenly have a solid team of five DJs, and each one brings his or her own spin on the basic genre ‘Ithaca’s longest-running local request Oldies show’ “There are so many great DJs on local radio, so it makes me wonder what pushed me over the top. We Are Seneca Lake had one of the more notably successful years when it comes to local activism in the area, claiming a victory when the plan for natural gas storage near Seneca Lake was halted. We Are Seneca Lake, an environmentalist group, had applied significant public pressure to defeat the measure. “We Are Seneca Lake sets a great example of what can be achieved when hundreds of people organize through nonviolent civil disobedience under a common goal to protect our community and way of life,” the group said via its Facebook. “It was amazing to see everyone take time out of their lives and offer their skills as part of this movement. This is truly a victory for the environment.”

BEST CHEF GENTRY MORRIS, THE ROOK “Thank you to everyone who voted for me, and to all the people who enjoy The Rook,” says Morris, who has lived in Ithaca since 2011. “I’m inspired by people who love to cook and eat. I also draw inspiration from traveling. I think it’s important see what is happening in other cities, and what other chefs are doing.
“We opened in January of 2016, intending to be a neighborhood staple. As we move forward I think we continue to be a place where people can come to celebrate, have a good cocktail, and consistently good food. I definitely couldn’t do it myself, big thanks to all of our employees, kitchen and front of house.

P L A C E S BEST QUIET SPOT Cascadilla Gorge
BEST QUIET SPOT CASCADILLA GORGE The Cornell Botanic Gardens Cascadilla Gorge Trail connects downtown Ithaca with the Cornell Campus among one of the most picturesque gorges in the Finger Lakes Region and was voted Ithaca’s favorite gorge. And aside from the whoosh of the waterfall, it is quiet along the path. What path? Ascending over 400 feet, this historic set of stone trails and staircases was originally constructed in the late 1920’s, and takes visitors through the gorge formed from ancient bedrock and past six waterfalls. At a leisurely pace, this 1/3-mile section of the trail takes less than an hour from the Treman Triangle Park in downtown to the upper entrance by the College Avenue Stone Arch Bridge. In Collegetown, the trail crosses College Avenue and the Goldwin Smith Walk continues to follow Cascadilla Creek for another half mile through a flat, wooded area that leads to two footbridges over scenic waterfalls. The lower gorge from Linn St to College Ave is closed during the winter months, but the gorge above College Ave is open year round.
BEST COLLEGE HANGOUT TIE: THE NINES AND COLLEGETOWN BAGELS Lindsey Brous Gitlin says, “We are so honored to be voted Best College Hangout! We have had the best customers for the past 40 years and we have loved every minute of it. It is truly our amazing staff and patrons that make CTB what it is. Thank you!”
BEST NEIGHBORHOOD STREET UTICA STREET This makes sense to us. The Fall Creek neighborhood has been a consistent winner in past polls, and Utica Street is a nice quiet sixblock residential street sandwiched between Tioga and Cayuga Streets.
BEST WILDERNESS AREA ROBERT H. TREMAN S TAT E PA R K Whenever we have first-time visitors from out of town, Robert H. Treman State Park is always on the itinerary. Robert H. Treman State Park is an area of wild beauty, with the rugged gorge called Enfield Glen as its scenic highlight. Winding trails follow the gorge past 12 waterfalls, including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, to where visitors can see a mile-and-a-half down the wooded gorge as it winds its way to the lower park. Campers can choose from tent or RV sites or cabins. Enjoy nine miles of hiking trails, or swim in a stream-fed pool beneath a waterfall. Swimming is allowed in lifeguarded area only.
B E S T F L X D AY T R I P SENECA LAKE WINERIES Take an afternoon to delve into the area’s culinary masterpieces, or check out the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. (2 N Franklin St, Watkins Glen, NY 14891 (607) 535-8080 | (877) 536-2717) If wine isn’t your favorite, Schuyler County has two micro-breweries that are always brewing up local favorites, as well as a brand new distillery that offers locally made spirits from locally grown ingredients. W
e’ll finish off the 2018 Best of Ithaca awards section with some openended questions the audience answered for us. It’s always nice to hand out awards, but they only give a glimpse into what our readers really have bouncing around their brains. So here’s a chance for them to expound a little bit, get a little creative, and have everyone’s voice heard… except the ones that were really, really inappropriate (a few!) or spelled so poorly they were beyond recognition (a lot!). So without further ado….
CAREER ADVICE FOR S VA N T E M Y R I C K • No more road diets • ALWAYS get involved in a land war in lowvacancy urban areas • Move on to a state or federal position • Keep moving ahead with ideas for safe injection sites and don’t let Ithaca go backwards in our low number of marijuana arrests • Be more liberal.
