O

f all the tools employed in the midterm elections, few pack more firepower than the Political Action Committee – privately-financed organizations with clear intentions to influence elections or legislation.

Looking at the past two elections, much of it has come from conservative-leaning sources, creating an outsized presence on the outcomes of the past two races which, by any measure, were blowout victories for the conservative district’s Republican incumbent.

In the 2016 midterm election, five PACs aiding causes to support incumbent Congressman Tom Reed or to oppose his opponent, Democrat John Plumb, brought close to $564,000 in outside funding, the brunt of which came from well-funded groups such as the Congressional Leadership Fund and ClearPath Action, a fund set up by entrepreneur and conservative philanthropist Jay Faison. (Less than $70,000 in funding favorable to Plumb was involved in the race.)

In the election before, causes either supporting Reed or railing against his opponent, Tompkins County Legislator Martha Robertson, amounted to more than $677,000 – vastly outweighing the $78,500 in funds favorable to Robertson. And, going all the way back to the 2012 race where Reed narrowly defeated Ithacan Nahan Shinagawa, Reed’s PAC funding outweighed his Democratic challenger by about $265,000 to $430.

Though PACs often don’t appear in smaller Congressional races until after the primaries have been finished, two groups appeared on the year-end returns filed with the FEC last month. Unlike the funds to rear their heads in the past three elections, both PACs were headquartered and financed within the district. And both will benefit Democrats.

In November, an all-volunteer group called Your NY 23rd filed with the FEC as an opposition PAC to Reed, pledging all contributions would “fund direct advertising campaigns intended to reach every voter in NY’s 23rd Congressional District.”

Starting A Business As An Immigrant

n Feb. 7, Upstate Capital Association of New York hosted “Starting Up and Staying Here: Immigrant Entrepreneurship,” a networking event at Cornell University’s eHub focused on immigrant entrepreneurship in the region, encouraging professional networking, and examining legal restrictions on startups that international students confront if they remain in the U.S. after earning their degrees.

In the United States, immigrants comprise 25 percent of all entrepreneurs and inventors (source: National Venture Capital Association), 31 percent of all venture-backed founders, and 51 percent of U.S. startup worth at least $1 billion were started by immigrants. Yet, international students still face a major barrier once they graduate and are ready

to develop their businesses: the absence of a startup visa.

Legal immigration categories in the U.S. were last modified with the Immigration Act of 1990, and law professor Stephen Yale-Loehr isn’t optimistic that Congress, which he characterizes as “dysfunctional,” will introduce a new startup visa category in the near future: “I don’t think that—no matter what anyone proposes—immigration reform is going to come anytime soon.

So, we all have to figure out how to live within the living system.”

Thus, immigrant entrepreneurs must find a way to fit into one of the existing visa categories. Yale-Loehr advises that immigrant entrepreneurs that are currently enrolled at a university exercise caution.

and you’re working at that company—even if you’re not taking a salary—that could be deemed a violation of your student visa,” said Yale-Loehr.

While a green card requires one to be a resident for five years, an alternative option is an H-1B temporar y work visa, which enables an immigrant in a “specialty occupation” to remain in the U.S. for up to six years, after which one can receive a green card if eligible. In 2017, over 200,000 H-1B applications were filed, but with an acceptance cap of only 85,000.

Fortunately, in Upstate New York, institutions like Cornell, or organizations such as Upstate Capital and Cay uga Venture Fund, promote a supportive environment for immigrant entrepreneurs. Without immigration reform, international migrants to the U.S. looking to grow their companies on American soil will continue to encounter legislative obstacles.

everal years ago on Mother’s Day, Esther Herkowitz, tried to plant rose bushes in memory of her mother and grandmother. Instead of soil, she hit cement, metal bits and rebar.

“That was when I found out that I bought a mobile home on an unkempt toxic dump,” she said.

Herkowitz lives at Nate’s Floral Estates at 205 Cecil Malone Drive in Ithaca. Today, the mobile home park residents must plant their fruits and vegetables in raised beds, planters or pots. This requirement is stipulated in the operating permit issued by the Tompkins County Health Department. Until 1970, the land under the trailer park was the city of Ithaca’s landfill, accepting wastes, for 30-32 years.

“This site is the only uncapped toxic landfill in New York State with hundreds of people living directly on top of the dump. It is a scandal that this dump has never been cleaned up,” said environmental activist Walter Hang. He is president of Toxics Targeting, a private firm using government data to track environmental concerns.

field of seven candidates narrows itself down to a more manageable size, started a funding pool through the Democratic political fundraising portal ActBlue under the name Reed Free 23, looking to coax reluctant fundraisers to contribute $23 each (or more) to a general fund for the eventual nominee.

Using an ActBlue product called a Nominee Fund (which is basically an escrow account) the group – which counts volunteers from across the district – can raise money in advance for a yet-to-benamed candidate, making it “perfect for a primary season,” said Angelica, New York resident Karen Ash, a representative for the group.

regional engineer for the New York State Highway Department in Tompkins County, recalled a time in 1972 when a woman mistakenly called the highway department to report a fire at the dump. Yonkin headed out to the fire but noticed something besides the flames.

“I observed a bunch of 55-gallon drums with 2,4,5-T that had not been covered yet,” he said, No longer registered for use in the U.S., the toxic herbicide, 2,4,5-T was mixed with another herbicide, 2,4-D, to make Agent Orange used during the Vietnam War as a defoliant to clear away jungle vegetation. Agent Orange has been linked to a wide variety of health problems, including cancer and birth defects.

No records indicate that the wastes, including the 20 drums Yonkin encountered, were ever removed from the site, according

to a 2017 hydrogeologic investigation prepared for the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

“Over time, thousands of waste drums were uncovered at this site and hauled away, but the wastes that leaked out were never cleaned up,” said Hang in an email.

Instead of removing materials from the landfill, the site was covered in a layer of soil cover from 1.5 to 4 feet thick.

Today, a drum, iron parts, metal scraps, orange-colored dirt and a rusted car stick out from the soil, immediately west of Wegmans and the surface water flood control relief channel and just outside the fence surrounding the mobile home park’s perimeter. On rainy days, the river bank can be seen

leaching out a visibly rust-colored substance into the stream, the result of rain water seeping into the uncapped trash beneath the park.

DEC is reportedly not concerned that the site is leaking.

“We have ever y rea son to believe everything is contained on site,” said Reggie Parker, DEC regional engineer.

But “out of an abundance of caution” the DEC is planning to conduct investigations to assess whether the site may be contaminating a drinking water source, as required in the Clean Water Infrastructure Act of 2017. In a statement, the DEC said the investigation “is designed to ensure

grassroots campaign since the first donation was received January 14: In less than one month, the fund has accumulated more than $8,000 from individual donors within the district, each donation averaging around $40. (Conversely, Ash notes, Reed has raised only $3,440 of his nearly $1.76 million dollar war chest from in-district donations of less than $250 according to Q4 FEC filings.)

“In brainstorming strategies for turning the 23rd Congressional district blue, one huge challenge kept arising,” noted Ash. “In each of his last two races, the incumbent had raised upwards of $3 million. We needed to level the playing field for our candidate, and so committed to raising $3 million for an as-yet-unnamed person. If each registered blue or green voter in our district would give $23, we’d raise the money just

like that. And it’s plausible that we could raise that much from within the district – in small contributions from lots and lots and lots of people.”

On the opposition, Your NY 23rd is working not to offer direct financial support for the Democratic nominee but to instead, mount an opposition campaign against Reed – an area where the candidate has exceeded in past campaigns. Active since last Spring, the group is kicking off its major fundraising efforts this month and, unlike Reed Free 23, will be raising and spending up through the midterm elections this November.

Formed from the same progressive backlash that came from the election of President Donald Trump – for whom Reed was an early ally – Your NY 23rd includes a volunteer board that, working

remotely, has managed to tap into left-leaning groups all over the district. But even in the western parts of the district where Reed has maintained popularity, there seems to be a political awakening that has encouraged organizers like PAC Director Marcia Johnson who, like many newly-active players on the political scene, are new to the game. After educating themselves on the dynamics of PAC funding streams, the group decided, after it all, their efforts would be best spent selling the rest of the district on their perspectives of the incumbent.

“There are people, even from out here, very interested in finding someone who represents our interests,” Johnson said.

and grow one’s understanding of race and of our legacies. But in the rear English classroom of Ms. Valerie Evans, a different type of opportunity was presenting itself.

Circled by a dozen young women of color, Dr. Nia Nunn and Nydia Blas, the leaders of Southside Community Center, had a room in their hands, every face stone serious and unblinking. For the past few weeks, these

girls had been participants in a writing project at Southside for all in the community ages 11 to 21, an opportunity for each to define, in their own words, what it means to be black. This exercise, a key component in the center’s evolving Black Consciousness Curriculum, sought to inspire contemplation among its participants on a number

those sleeping outside on one night of the year during winter, when temperatures are usually below freezing.

Speaking to the crowd, the panel of self-identified Christians, organized by Community Faith Partners, said they were drawn to this work through their religion. During the discussion, they advocated for policy change and affordable housing, not just charity work, as ways to address the homelessness crisis.

It is difficult to discuss homelessness in Ithaca without bringing up the Jungle, a homeless camp with around 20 or 30 residents sleeping in tents and huts.

“I didn’t think there were any homeless people in Ithaca,” said panelist Carmen Guidi. “Then I heard about the Jungle and was told not to go there. I went there anyways with a bunch of pizza and water one afternoon and the rest is history.”

“Our whole family went down there and we were just shocked

at what we saw, so close in proximity to the big box stores in the area,” added panelist Deb Wilke, who volunteers to assist people experiencing homelessness.

Some Jungle residents have been there for years and, according to Guidi, the population continues to grow. Wilke, Guidi and others have volunteered their time and resources to assist those living in the Jungle by providing them with food and supplies. They do not visit the Jungle to proselytize or to shame the people living there.

“When engaging with somebody that is experiencing poverty and homelessness, the worst thing we can do is walk up to them to evangelize them,” said panelist Mike Foster, who spent 10 years homeless before becoming the program manager at the Ithaca Rescue Mission, which provides emergency shelter for those experiencing homeless-

ustainable Tompkins is trying to use green to motivate kids to go green.

The group, partnering with the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI), is offering $5,000 total in grants as part of its 2018 Youth Climate Challenge, an effort to inspire local students to team up with each other and design “projects that reduce carbon dioxide emissions or spread awareness of local climate impacts.” The contest started Feb. 15, and will run through the end of the year.

Projects must be completed by December 15, along with a presentation to the YCC group at a celebratory summit in the same month.

To emphasize the community-centric nature of the contest, funded projects must measurably decrease carbon dioxide emissions from school, homes, libraries, churches or other local organizations, and can range in severity from fairly small, like using a more efficient light bulb, to larger scale changes. Eligible projects can also increase awareness of t he i mpor ta nce a nd impact of local climates, trying to motivate others in some way to consider their fossil fuel usage, or peer-to-peer education and outreach on the issue.

There’s a pool of $5,000 available, with a maximum of $1,000 reward per project and rolling award dates, and on adult advisor per group is required.

Sustainable Tompkins President Gay Nicholson said the group is now trying to spread the word for the competition to attract more contestants. A presentation announcing the challenge, educating about the climate change issue both globally and locally and outlining some of the points the students may try to investigate has been prepared by Dr. Tim Harris, a local pediatrician who proposed the Climate Challenge idea, and he’s currently scheduled to give the presentation to t he New Roots Charter School student body at the end of February and at Ithaca High School in March.

n the plain, white hallways of Boynton Middle School, the 10:37 bell rang and the building settled down, the flurried rush of students quieting down as doors shut and teachers set to work.

The school day last Thursday at Boynton was a unique one for students. Smack in the center of Black History Month, the student body and its faculty began their days in the school gymnasium, packing the bleachers for the start of the district’s 14th annual Black History Day, a day of events intended to draw students into an immersive dialogue with black culture, from written reflection to participation in the Afro Brazilian martial art, Capoeira (a style of dance designed by Brazilian slaves to hide the martial art from the slave owners) to sitting back and tuning in to raw examinations of America’s origins and the racism inherent throughout its history.

A Look Into The Homeless Problem

panel of volunteers and nonprofit workers who help people experiencing homelessness brought more than 100 people to the Greater Ithaca Activities Center this weekend to discuss a growing homelessness crisis in the City of Ithaca.

According to point-in-time counts of prev ious years, in which agencies and off icials drive around the city one night of the year surveying who is experiencing homelessness, the number of individuals sleeping outside has worsened over the years. Last year’s count was just under 80 people, but the pointin-time count can be skewed because it only accounts for

What Will We Do When It’s Us? I couldn’t find the tweet I was thinking of that first inspired me to write this column, but it was one that has kept my mind occupied since that push alert popped up on my phone, letting me know America’s most recent school shooting was taking place.

Tweeted out by a small metro television reporter, it wasn’t deeply introspective, nor was it rich in the statistics and data visualization wizardry typically thrown about by most of the big league wordsmiths with offices in New York or Washington. (Or both.) It wasn’t even a great observation really, perhaps overgeneralized and maybe a bit kneejerk in simplifying something few of us could understand in the moment. But it was powerful enough to stick with me, enough so to write something about. It went something like this: “It’s sad when every journalist will be expected to cover a mass shooting at least once in their careers.”

Statistically, this is unlikely. The Washington Post’s Phillip Bump estimates – after last Wednesday’s shooting in Florida – that approximately 188 school shootings have taken place since 2000, a little more than 10 per year. (This is the most conservative estimate, excluding shootings that have taken place either outside of schools or outside of school hours.) If you wanted to look at raw statistics, any given school in the United States (of which there are close to 93,000) has about onehundredth a percent of likelihood of experiencing a shooting. You can look at other figures, sure,

like the Academy For Critical Incident Analysis’ determination that the United States accounted for half of all multi-instance student homicides in the United States. (More than 200 dead, if you’re keeping score). All considered, we’d say one-hundredth of a percentage point sounds fairly safe.

But for every school (or neighborhood, or concert, or anything) that doesn’t get shot up, a handful will. Probability is funny like that – it doesn’t discriminate.

New York State has had plenty of what we would consider to be “mass shootings.” a 64-yearold man shot six individuals in the Mohawk Valley in 2013, killing five. 14 individuals – including the shooter – were killed at a civic association in Binghamton in a 2009 incident that, until recently, was ranked among the top-ten worst mass shootings in American history. In the early-’90s, Watkins Glen and Garden City, in Long Island, saw numerous dead from shootings that killed five and six individuals, respectively.

Given that the mass shooting seems to be a wholly American tradition many of our elected officials seem uninterested in disrupting, we’ve begun to look at the prospect of tragedy as something we need to prepare for. On Thursday, the superintendent of the Ithaca City School District sent out a reminder of safety protocols in place in the instance a mass shooting were to happen in the school. We were reminded to keep praying.

here’s a maxim in business that says the name of an enterprise should be easy to spell, pronounce, and remember, and compact rather than long, particularly among enterprises that depend on public trade and wide exposure.

Each February the National Football League undertakes an endeavor called the Super Bowl, its championship game, which it wants millions of people to know about and watch. The game is quite commercially successful. The name is textbook short and sweet.

You might have noticed, however, that supermarkets, pizzerias, bars, and other businesses that wish to capitalize on the popularity of the Super Bowl refer to the occasion in their advertising as “Game Day,” or something similar.

That’s because the Super Bowl is so big that the NFL chooses to flout the business convention of having one’s name used as broadly as possible. The league copyrights the name Super Bowl and forbids its use without partnership or payment, especially payment.

This week you can see the same phenomenon with the big bash thrown by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences out in Hollywood, California. The event has a popular name that is just as tidy and catchy as the NFL’s, but like the NFL’s is copyrighted and aggressively restricted in use.

That’s why on March 4th our downtown movie house, Cinemapolis, is not having an Oscars Night or Celebration or anything like that, but its “Annual Awards Night Party,” which it calls “And The Winner

Is…”.

The event is a major fundraiser for the not-for-profit theater. It features food, drink, raffles, silent auctions, and a “Guess the Winners” contest, although it can’t tell you publicly the winners of what, nor specifically what event it will be showing live on two screens broadcast from Hollywood, California.

The theater’s ads clearly state that “This event is not sponsored by or affiliated with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,” to assure the covetous Academy that no one will mistakenly go to Green Street rather than L.A.’s Dolby Theater to see Meryl Streep in person or sit near Jack Nicholson.

Ithaca is a good movie town, with its five-screen downtown art house and snazzy 14-screen multiplex at the mall (which calls itself a “Stadium” rather than a theater, but is pleasingly plush among stadia). We also have Cornell Cinema, as thoroughly arty a venue as exists anywhere, showing at least five different movies per week, for fifty years or so, although its status (maybe even existence) is now threatened by cuts in the Cornell budget which were approved last November over great outcry.

Thinking on the topic of movies and our town, I got to wondering if there are certain movies that define Ithaca, or illustrate its tastes, and I put a question on a local online site that a few hundred people might see.

idden deep within the Governor’s 2018-19 State Budget plan is a new 2 percent cap on increases to Building, Transportation, and BOCES aids, starting in 2019. These expense-driven aid caps would once again harm the neediest districts in the state. Who uses transportation aid most? Rural districts. Who uses BOCES aid most? Poor, rural districts. Everyone relies on building aid, but the cap, which in the case of building aid applies statewide rather than districtwide, will make it less likely for voters to approve projects, because there will be no guarantee that the burden won’t fall mainly on the local property tax payer. If districts X and Y are doing gigantic projects featuring state-of-the-art gyms and auditoriums, there is less of a chance that district Z will get state aid for its new roof and boiler. Who will issue a bond for district Z’s project when the source of the funding is unclear?

fter the tragedy this week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, we again are forced to imagine the horror of school shootings for the 25th time since Columbine with 141 people, mostly children, killed violently in schools since then. The message from Superintendent Brown offers no comfort. We know that even the youngest children at ISCD are suffering from record levels of anxiety and depression. Imagine the impact of “additional scenario-based drills” suggested by Brown on our children, knowing that they each know on some level that a mass shooting is possible in their own school? I want to urge parents of ICSD students and community members to press Dr. Brown to insure that security systems and and monitoring traffic is implemented at the front doors of each and every campus, something that would be far more effective and reassuring

about them, and in cohort, about us all.

I ruled out seasonal and otherwise obligatory chestnuts like “It’s A Wonderful Life” or “The Wizard of Oz.” First I tested the premise with a colleague at work, whose answer was “The Sound Of Music.” Mine was “The Godfather.” No one we work with had any trouble guessing who chose which.

It turned out that my online poll cited these two films repeatedly: in fact, most.

This pleased me from a social science standpoint.

The others most frequently cited were “Goodfellas” and “Moonstruck.” It seems Ithaca likes gangster and love stories.

Classics mentioned included “Chinatown” and “Duck Soup.” Most others cited I’d never seen or didn’t even know (e.g., “An Affair To Remember,” “Wings Of Desire,” “Inland Empire”). I guess this makes Ithaca a sophisticated place, along with the fact that no action picture was named, although maybe this just means that action pictures

don’t get many repeat viewings.

The only political movie cited was “FailSafe,” which surprised me, in a political town like ours. It also made me wonder how “Dr. Strangelove” missed this list.

“Strangelove” is probably my #2. I’ve seen it many times on TV or otherwise at home, but first as an undergraduate, at Cornell Cinema. I remember how taken I was then by its tension, humor, and great performances, and the walk home afterwards in the middle of a crowd similarly taken, vividly talking.

I hope Cornell will change its mind and keep its Cinema alive, so others can have such nights.

Do they ask pressing questions in public meetings, letters, and emails, and then tally and post our responses? Do they ask villages, towns, and cities in their districts to pose pressing questions for them, and then post combined tallies from throughout the district? Do they post tallies of messages received for and against proposed laws? Do they restrict “lobbying” to the lobby, that is, to public settings in their home districts? In session, do they strive for complete fairness regardless of party, and allow all legislators to propose, develop and amend legislation? When the people of the district have a clear preference, do they vote our will and wisdom, or at least refuse to vote against us?

Are any of these things partisan? No. Are they hard to do? No. Are they done?

No! - and this helps explain the rift between people and government. Our legislators blur and shadow our preferences, dismiss them, and feel free to cheat on us. Elected officials routinely develop policies and make decisions without us; punish independence from the parties’ funders and hacks; turn political competitors into enemies; and crank out crazy propaganda. They deny participation to minority legislators through majority rule, thus denying equal repre-

than more lockdown drills at keeping our kids safe. Such systems are already in place and have been for a long time at many of our neighboring schools, such as Dryden and Groton.

Of course, part of their charm is that Ithacans are open and optimistic, meaning a welcoming feeling in our schools is important to us, and that we tend to never believe such things can happen here. Still…tragically, these sentiments are commonly heard after the fact among many of the schools where it has happened.

My daughter attended Caroline when the Newtown, CT shootings killed 27 people in 2012, mostly first grade children, ages six and seven. The solution offered at Caroline was for the principal there to stand at the door and greet people during morning arrival. Nothing throughout the day, not as much as a desk positioned to monitor arrivals. No thought of security system. I am not blaming Caroline’s principal in the least - Mary Grover was absolutely doing what she could given her staff and her resources.

Her current school is even less secure, and I often marvel how, when visit, I can, if I wish, wander freely without encountering a school official or without being questioned. I have questioned the Principal, who claims she is also concerned but that we must direct the issue to Dr. Brown. I have done so.

Don’t misinterpret me -- it’s great to be friendly and open, but it’s also, sadly, naive.

Times are hard, people are angry and guns are easy to obtain. Let’s stop them at the door. Please urge the leadership at ICSD to press Dr. Brown to install buzz-in, camerabased security system on all main entrances of ICSD buildings.

s democracy is first for the people, it’s dead last for Congressman Tom Reed and many elected officials.

We should rank legislators and candidates by the degree to which they embrace guidance from their districts’ people. Do they consult us on proposals they get from lob-

sentation for the people of those districts.

Partisanship excludes, divides, deceives, distracts, and diminishes us; and makes governance a nightmare. Representatives of any party, or none, will stand far above the sordid field, and draw respect from almost everyone, if they put democratic and republican principles first, do what democracy requires, and act as our agent.

One sample of the people’s will and wisdom that Congressman Reed tried to repress is now online, free for all to see.

Journalists from all over the country helicoptered in while others, in their offices in Manhattan, Washington and even Fort Lauderdale, worked the phones, inundating every available phone line in Broward County. Reporters did what reporters are supposed to do, chasing down teenagers, parents, policemen, whoever, to get clips for their own newscasts. They might be there only temporarily, but they offered the chance for a community in trauma to tell the world of the pain they felt, their reactions, and to document the consequences of evil as they played out in real time.

In a Twitter thread between a number of local journalists current and not, this was the prevailing perspective.

“These young adults have just had every inch of their childhood stripped from them. They are firsthand witnesses to horror,” argued Vaughn Golden, an Ithaca Times contributor now working in Washington, D.C. “Ignoring the purity of their raw emotion whitewashes this story and those like it.”

Jolene Almendarez, of The Ithaca Voice, added that as journalists, we shouldn’t be deciding for people whether and when they choose to share stories; that they should share when and how they choose.

If a camera – or hundreds – are available to speak into, what’s to say it shouldn’t be yours? What gives any of us the right to deny the public of some nuance of the horrific consequences of horrific deeds to the rest of the world, in the hopes to motivate change?

Whether or not one disagrees with the ethics of the visceral details, this is extremely valid reasoning for publishing our society’s rawest visions of evil: it shows the worst of what we must overcome.

But for the ironclad mission of journalism, humanity is prone to ambiguity in its application.

As poignantly put several months ago by Dallas Morning News reporter Lauren McGaughy, one of the first to arrive in another recent shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas: “there should be — there must be — a better way to cover a tragedy like this.”

Should we have hundreds of cameras and satellite trucks crowding a community in mourning?

Badgering every person in town we can? Some might argue yes, and for extremely valid reasons.

No local outlet, no matter the desire to, will have the resources to fairly and accurately capture the lives of each of the victims or to reach as many homes as we, on our own would be able to. It’s the national media that is the reason why, sitting here in an office an entire country away, I’m as aching and anxious for the sobbing strangers I saw on TV as someone in Colorado might be. But there’s also the negative impacts: research on something called the “Media Contagion Effect” has shown correlations between the extent of exposure of violent incidents and their impacts on other, similar incidents taking place elsewhere. To that end, as locals, do we shun mass media? Do we limit who among the mass media we talk to?

In our newsroom, the biggest questions I always ask of a reporter writing an article, are “what’s the point? What do you hope to accomplish with this piece? How will this benefit people?” As small town reporters, we may not have a role to play in sharing our story with the nation. But as neighbors, and as friends, we know we’ll have some role to play when the satellite trucks roll back on down Route 79.

I still don’t know what it will be. Hopefully, we’ll never have to find out. But I like Jolene’s idea best: “Tell the story.”

Albany is still in budget season, leaving major legislative policy battles in the wings for a few more weeks. Last week, the Assembly unanimously approved a bill that would add onto sweeping e-cigarette legislation approved in the final hours of last year’s legislative session. The new provision would make it illegal for distributors to distribute e-cigarette products to minors (younger than 18 years old) products for free. The legislative memo notes that the loophole was exploited in particular over the summer where distributors would give away e-cigarette products for free at music festivals and other events as promotional items. The legislature is not is session this coming week. Assemblywoman Lifton is taking advantage of the break to host a series of town hall events. The town hall event for Ithaca will take place at the Ithaca Town Hall from 4-6 p.m. on Friday..

Tom O’M ara- N.Y. State S enate

Senator O’Mara is currently sponsoring a piece of legislation that started moving around the state Senate last week. The bill would eliminate state corporate taxes for “pass-through” manufacturers in the state. The Brookings Institution defines pass-through manufacturers as businesses that “have their income “pass through” to their owners to be taxed under the individual income tax.” About 95 percent of U.S. businesses are considered pass-through, including most small, family owned, businesses. By excluding pass-through businesses from inclusion under New York’s corporate tax, O’Mara hopes more entrepreneurs and small enterprises would start up in the state which remains the second-highest taxed in the nation. According to the bill, the new measure would cost the state $110 million dollars in tax revenue each year.

This week the House passed the ADA Education and Reform Act of 2017 which aims to place barriers on law suits under the signature Clinton administration bill meant to require access to public places for people with disabilities. Proponents claim the bill protects small businesses against “frivolous lawsuits,” but critics say the new bill makes legal enforcement under the ADA impossible. The bill passed the House with Reed voting in favor. Another controversial piece of legislation the House passed this week was the Protecting Consumers’ Access to Credit Act of 2017 which creates a loophole legalizing alternative financial institutions to maintain lines of credit and ultimately loan funds. Reed voted in favor of the bill which passed largely along party lines. Proponents of the bill argue it ensures alternative credit institutions like pay-day loan centers and thrift stores can operate in areas where direct banking institutions aren’t in place.

What Is It About Ithaca That Makes It A Hot Spot For The Peace Corps?

harlene Castle was excited.

It was spring 2014, late in the application process for the Peace Corps. It had been just under a year since she first applied, her materials had been reviewed and feedback returned, and though Castle didn’t know exactly where she’d be going, she was hoping to be a Spanish tutor, eyeing an assignment to a Latin American country.

She was even walking on the way to her senior year Spanish language class at San Diego State University when she was notified.

At that moment she received the email she’d been anxiously awaiting. Her assignment: a university in the Sichuan Province in China.

“When I got the email, I didn’t even know the Peace Corps was in China,” Castle said. “So I was nervous, terrified, excited. [...] I had learned my numbers before going, but I couldn’t speak any Chinese, so it was definitely scary.”

turned out well for Castle; she enjoyed her time and was safe abroad, and found the progress she made with her verbal English tutoring students to be satisfying and rewarding. She’s one of many Ithacans who have participated in the Peace Corps, which has an unusually strong presence in the city.

It was announced in December that Ithaca ranks No. 3 among metropolitan areas for the highest number of Peace Corps volunteers per capita, with 9.8 volunteers per 100,000 residents, trailing only Missoula, Montana and Charlottesville, Virginia. The Peace Corps has long been a staple in the Ithaca community, fueled in part by the presence of Cornell University, Ithaca College and Tompkins Cortland Community College providing a steady supply of ambitious students eager and willing to make a difference in a variety of ways.

Cornell has also just been announced as the No. 21 Top Volunteer-Producing Colleges and Universities list among

schools with between 5,000 and 15,000 undergraduate students. As of 2018, there are currently 16 Cornell students involved with the Peace Corps and, according to the organization, 1,678 Cornell alumni have participated since the Peace Corps’ inception – 400 more than the next closest Ivy League school, Harvard University. Throughout the last decade, as Ithaca has stayed high in the overall community Peace Corps participation rankings, Cornell has been in the top 25 among colleges its size as well.

The Peace Corps was originally started in 1961, an initiative of then-President John F. Kennedy. The idea had been rumored around Congress when Kennedy picked it up as a campaign issue and eventually signed an Executive Order establishing the program, and further making it permanent later that same year. The program was immediately popular, drawing thousands of volunteers in its first few years working toward a stated mission to promote world peace and friendship.

In addition to Ithaca’s association, Cornell’s deep connections to the Peace Corps can be traced back to its origins: Congressman Richard Ottinger, who represented New York’s 20th Congressional District in the 1960s and 1970s, was an active 1951 Cornell alumnus. When Kennedy signed the Peace Corps into existence, Ottinger, a lawyer at the time, helped establish it and served as its second staff member, overseeing program direction for the western coast of South America until he was elected to Congress in 1964, inspired to public service by his involvement with the Peace Corps.

such a strong foundation in Ithaca for so long. Castle and Harris both said now that the cycle is in place it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts: there are up and down years with more or less volunteers, but the overall community at Cornell in particular can attract those who have left the service and are pursuing graduate degrees, which creates a network. Harris said stories detailing Peace Corps deployments are usually very positive, and that encourages people to get involved as well; there’s also a volunteer recruiter at the university, who Castle said also plays a significant role in orchestrating that network of former volunteers on campus. Additionally, Castle said the recently introduced Coverdell Fellowship program at the school provides scholarships for Peace Corps students enrolled in certain academic programs at Cornell.

Generally speaking, the Peace Corps has made an effort in recent years to attract more people to apply, after a dip in the last few years in some application demographics that included Cornell, though overall application numbers remained steady. Volunteers now have more choice in where their assignment is, as opposed to often having nearly no agency in the location process just a few years ago. The application process takes closer to six months than the year it did when Castle applied, and new partnerships like the Coverdell Fellowship, which Castle said is worth at least $8,000 per year in tuition for students in the Cornell Institute for Public Affairs, could attract new students or reinvigorate students or recent graduates who might have been without the means to participate.

Current volunteer Laura Bach, now serving in Uganda, floated the theory that Cornell’s international population and the student demographic that is attracted to the Ivy League school both contribute to its strong Peace Corps population. If she’s right, Cornell is the perfect breeding ground for a new wave of Peace Corps volunteers and a stable spot as one of the country’s most popular areas for participation for the foreseeable future. If she’s not, the school could fall off the top 25 list for the first time in recent memory, and Ithaca’s standing would in turn take a significant hit as well.

“Cornell is a large school with a fairly diverse, international, student population, and works to inspire students to think globally,” she said. “I think the type of student drawn to Cornell, and the university’s commitment to broadening horizons leads to a high number of Peace Corps volunteers.”

Drinking water for Nate’s Floral Estates comes from the City of Ithaca’s water supply. Hang contends that the PVC plastic pipe system in the mobile home park is not strong enough to withstand the pressure of the city’s supply system and breaks regularly. The City of Ithaca, with no jurisdiction over private property, has no record of the water systems at Nate’s Floral Estates, and all city maps show the city water system’s limits ending at the entrance of the park.

The operating permit issued to Elline Weiner, park operator, for the period January–October 2018, requires notification of the Tompkins County Health Department within 24 hours of a water main break, sewage system repair or replacement. In addition, Weiner is required to file monthly reports providing information on water system interruptions or repairs, and collect and test bacteriological samples quarterly.

“We did not find any records that they had water main breaks last year,” said Liz Cameron, director of environmental health for Tompkins County.

The DEC said, “Prior investigations by DEC has shown that groundwater is not sufficiently impacted to require remediation. This new analysis will expand on the previous investigations, identify any additional contaminants that may be present in the groundwater and determine if any additional actions are necessary to protect public health and the environment.”

Weiner, the mobile home operator, did not respond to telephone messages requesting

comment on DEC’s investigation.

A fact sheet distributed to the 115 residences in the park explains that over a weeklong-period this month, DEC’s contractor, the Syracuse-based firm Parsons, will install four permanent groundwater-monitoring wells from 15-20 feet deep. Two wells will be located at the north end of the site, one in the middle, and a fourth at the southern end.

Within a month, the DEC expects to have the water quality analysis completed. Plans also call for a surface soil-sampling program as the next phase of the investigation, weather permitting This is not the first time the site has been tested. Previous investigations conducted in 1987, 1994 and 1999 revealed no hazardous wastes.

A 2000 test conducted on land now occupied by Lowes and other commercial establishments showed trace or low levels of volatile organic compounds and trichloroethylene and lead at levels exceeding groundwater standards, according to the 2017 work plan for the planned hydrogeological investigation.

Despite the findings, the site did not qualify to be listed on the state’s Inactive Hazardous Waste Disposal Site registry, according to the DEC. In 2003, the contaminated soils and materials were removed from the former landfill by the city of Ithaca with DEC’s oversight.

“I am concerned about what is coming out from underneath the site that eventually flows into Cayuga Lake,” First Ward Alderwoman Cynthia Brock said. She also objects to the zoning regulations allowing a housing complex on top of a former dump.

tions, considering questions such as “what is the black diaspora?” or “what does it mean to have black love?,” even questions on what each student knows about black history or whether or not they’d ever been accused of being too black, or not black enough.

While not intended to answer the question of black identity, these questions sought to inspire the students to define it, to establish a baseline for a greater discussion on their personal relationships with their race and the realities of how white society, through its history, now perceives and interprets blackness.

And on this day, those students planned to share those experiences in a big way, by not just reading their writing in front of a gymnasium of their peers, but by engaging the students as flies on the wall in the difficult and raw discussions on race black men and women have behind closed doors and rarely get to share with the world.

To lay the groundwork for the day’s discussions, Nunn began large, beginning her morning addressing each group of students individually – the white students, the black students, the students of color – on their respective places in the context of black empowerment.

She told the white students of the reality of each group being in different places, and that the discomfort in addressing those realities helps them to mobilize for change. For the students of color, she stressed that on Black History Day they were “not invisible,” that their voices and perspectives mattered in modern America’s traditional dichotomy of black and white. And for the black students, Nunn challenged the curriculum of the school system itself, how graduated white supremacy had

built up a a common and accepted perception of history over time that catered explicitly to that sense of white supremacy.

She challenged the curriculum of race education in the school system itself, saying there is currently no existing structure in the education system to teach the students about their own greatness. It’s about going beyond the cherry-picked names of Dr. King (the “harmless black man” who preached nonviolence in the face of violence), the white censored history of Rosa Parks and the slavery defying Harriet Tubman – the main three black figures kids learn about – and reaching to learn about people like Sojourner Truth, Belle Hooks, Frederick Douglass and even local women like Dorothea Cotton, who worked alongside MLK as education director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the 1960s.

Back then and even today, Nunn explained, the fight for equality catered to white-sensibilities, of what white people would find acceptable and what symbols would be most effective to motivate them to change. That symbol was not going to come from a dark-skinned, pregnant teenager: that would come from the staunch and well-spoken Rosa Parks, whose more than one decade’s experience as an activist with the NAACP made her the most suited to succeed where numerous black women had not. The reality of why Parks made history is because Parks could appeal to white America and did – something few schools, Nunn said, include in their curriculums.

s a champion for adequate childcare for all families, the Child Development Council is the oldest organization of its kind in the United States and is celebrating five decades of serving the Ithaca/Cortland area this year.

The Council provides resources and information to local parents and childcare providers and advocates for the continuous improvement of healthy child development by means of legislative activism and community education.

As the role of the Council has evolved over the years, Sue DaleHall, Child Development Council CEO, said the nonprofit has been re-evaluating its strategies for best serving the community. “We’ve been thinking about who our new stakeholders should be, and businesses have a vested interest in childcare so they can have a ready workforce,� she said, “as does the county, which would like to see people moving off of public assistance, which relies heavily on childcare.�

Dale-Hall believes that just as there are multiple ways to pay tuition for college, there ought to be options available for families who can’t pay out-ofpocket for childcare. “The concern is that there is not enough affordable childcare,� she said, adding that twothirds of families wherein all adults are working do not have access to regulated childcare. “Most of them can’t afford it,� Dale-Hall said. “The median household income is $54,000 in Tompkins County, which means they would be spending 24 to 25 percent of their income on childcare. For those with more than one child under the age of two, they can’t afford it at all.� “There are big challenges in front of us,� she said, “and we need to figure out how to push the needle on those things.�

that as a nation the United States placed as much value on early childhood as older childhood.

But until society catches up to the childcare crisis, the Council puts a great amount of effort into serving the local community as a resource for reliable information. At a time when internet research is the goto for most people wanting know about a given topic, the Child Development Council offers real help: At-home visits to low income families. “The internet is great because there is more access to information,� she said, “but the problem is that it’s hard to know if you’re getting good info or bad info.�

In a somewhat-transient city like Ithaca, families with newborns often lack support because they don’t have any family members living nearby, said Dale-Hall.

Currently the Council is reaching about 20 percent of eligible local families who could benefit from this type of in-home guidance, but she hopes to see that number increase with more outreach.

The Council also provides an online database of vetted childcare providers who meet the legal standards for daycares in New York State. “The research is so clear now,� Dale-Hall said. “It really tells us if we can impact the life of a young child they can benefit, and in longterm those children grow up to pay taxes, have jobs and buy houses. Community as a whole wins, so we know that’s a good thing to do. We just have to convince other people good thing to do.�

Growing Up With Waldorf School

n a recent Thursday morning the Ithaca Waldorf School (IWS) gave a tour of its facilities to about seven interested locals who, in the space of less than an hour, were treated to songs in French, Chinese dance, and the recitation of an ode to farmers. It was just another average morning at the school, which incorporates creativity into nearly every lesson.

With a new addition just completed in December, the Ithaca Waldorf School is now positioned to have a classroom for every grade level from kindergarten to eighth grade by fall of 2019, a scenario the school hasn’t seen since 2015. “We couldn’t have done that without the extra space, as our enrollment has almost doubled in the past three years” said Arabez Smith, assistant to the director and project coordinator of the new construction.

“In the years prior to 2015, our enrollment had fluctuated up and down,” Smith said, “but in recent years we’ve been progressing steadily in a positive direction.”

The school currently has 85 students, including those enrolled in the early childhood program, which is designed for children as young as three years old.

The additional space will give the students more room for the holistic “head, heart and hands” learning that is the cornerstone of a Waldorf education.

“The Waldorf curriculum incorporates so much movement!,” said Emily Butler, IWS director of school administration. “The students need a large space in which to both expand and contract: to run and skip but also to tiptoe”.

The range of movement is so important in the development of math and literacy skills, as

the children move to multiplication tables and complex prose.”

Part of the construction was the addition of the “Great Room,” a large, open room with wood floors and high ceilings where the school can hold assemblies and the students can perform plays. In the morning the children start their day by singing together in the room.

Butler said the Great Room is utilized every day. “It’s getting used all the time to bring movement to the lessons. In addition, Waldorf is a very social form of education, so we will be using the space to host concerts, academic lectures, community dinners, and also as a place for student presentations and dramatic productions.”

For a school like Waldorf that puts so much emphasis on music and dance, the ability to gather in one spacious room is especially important. At every grade level, music is interwoven throughout the students’ day. Even math concepts like multiplication tables and counting by twos are taught with a song.

“Something happens when we sing that involves more of our bodies than just our heads,” Butler said. “There’s an artistic connection to the song through emotion, a physical connection through rhythm.”

There’s now a designated knitting room, where each grade level works on a different project. Younger students start out by finger knitting and learning to braid, then progress to knitting and crocheting stuffed animals, dolls and socks. When the older students study the Industrial Revolution, they will learn how to use sewing machines, creating their own clothing to take home and wear, Smith said, adding “the handwork teacher is over the moon to have a

dedicated space for everything.”

The new construction created space for an additional classroom, meeting room and a 1,500 square foot community space which will soon become home to a baby grand piano. Currently the additional classroom is called the: “Room of Requirement,” which Harry Potter fans may recognize as an all-purpose room that can be turned into anything, depending on what is needed. That said, the school is counting on all classrooms to be filled in the fall of 2018, as the Middle School program expands.

The addition has large windows to let in plenty of natural light, and to keep up with changing technology the new rooms are equipped with a generous amount of electrical outlets and computer data ports.

“We’re not opposed to technology, but rather take a measured approach to its use. We just don’t place a big emphasis on it as the only important thing,” Smith said.

students ever did in the Great Room was a winter spiral, a ritual where evergreen branches are laid on the floor in in spiral formation. As each child walks through the spiral he or she carries an apple with an unlit candle at the center. In the center the candle is lit, and the student walks back through the spiral again, the effect being that the room gradually becomes brighter and brighter (for safety reasons a fire marshal is always present, said Butler).

“It’s really symbolic of the time of year,” she said. “As the days became darker, we ask ourselves, ‘where do we find the light?’ And we find it within.”

It was a great way to start off using the room, Butler said. “It’s really a sacred celebration,” she said. “We remain grateful that it was the opening event in the Great Room.”

The school’s next community event will be a Tet Lunar New Year celebration Mar. 9 at 2 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.

Teenagers And Depression

T

he thinking around teenage depression has changed significantly in recent years. The prevalent opinion used to be that children and adolescents simply did not suffer from depression. However, now we understand that young people can and do suffer from depression and that this illness is common among adolescents.

The symptoms of adolescent depression differ in some ways from adult symptoms. Also, if we think about human beings on a continuum, then we understand that the capacity to express depression changes as people mature. Young people cannot always communicate depression in the same language that adults use.

W h at a r e t h e c o m m o n sy m pto m s o f a d o l e s c e n t depression?

Sometimes it is easiest to understand the symptoms if we draw a comparison. An adult with depression meets specific criteria, the most common of which include a sad and depressed mood, recurrent thoughts of death, loss of interest in activities that were previously enjoyable, changes in sleep habits and appetite,

decrease in level of energy, libido, attention and concentration and feelings of guilt, worthlessness, hopelessness, and helplessness for at least a two-week period.

Adolescents, on the other hand, do not always feel sad; rather, they feel irritable. They sense that something is not right, but they typically resist seeking help. Their feelings of irritability and unease often lead to self-medication in the form of substance abuse and alcohol. It is not uncommon for their anger to lead to selfmutilation, and to behavioral problems. As the condition worsens, their performance in school often deteriorates and they begin a downward spiral of self-defeating behavior, such as cutting classes.

Is This on the rise?

Since mental health professionals have opened themselves up to the possibility, depression in children and in adolescents is more often recognized and diagnosed than a decade ago. The fall season can be especially difficult for teenagers as they begin classes. The adjustment to school can be very stressful, particularly for someone who is already struggling with depression. Deterioration in school performance is often one of the overt signals of this illness.

If you think your teenager is suffering from depression, the first thing you should do is talk with your teen. Express your concerns about the changes you see. Tell your teen that you want him or her to see a professional and be evaluated.

This can be a tough sell because teenagers feel they are invincible, but it is important to pursue it nevertheless.

Evaluation by a professional is valuable

because depression can be caused by medical conditions that are correctable. Thyroid problems, for example, can cause depression. We never assume that the problem is psychiatric in nature until we rule out other possible causes.

You can also enlist help from guidance counselors and teachers. Some parents are initially alerted to the problems depressed teens experience in school from a guidance counselor or school social worker or psychologist. In fact, schools are doing a lot of outreach and education about adolescent depression these days.

Depression left untreated can lead to a bad outcome. If you suspect your child is depressed, don’t wait for the downward spiral to continue: get your child help. The risks of not dealing with depression are far worse than the risks associated with getting treatment. If your child is worried about the stigma that some people associate with psychiatric illness, a support group of peers can help overcome those worries.

Depression among teens is quite common; we treat many patients with severe depression in the Adolescent Behavioral Services Unit at Cayuga Medical Center.

Can depression b e cured?

Adolescents with depression typically respond well to therapy that includes medication and talking therapy. We have very good drugs today for treating depression. Through talking therapy, teens can examine what is stressing them and, with the help of a therapist, can begin to think differently about those stressors.

Depression often recurs. We encourage people to develop a support system of family, friends, and school contacts. We also try to help them see the value of engaging that system when things start to go bad, and not to wait until the situation feels intolerable.

A group including Harris, Nicholson, Sustainable Tompkins workers and members of the Board of Directors Sasha Paris, Cathleen Banford, and Neil Schill, along with PRI Research Staff members Alexandra Moore (also in charge of fundraising), Don Duggan-Haas and Rob Ross have all been working on creating the challenge and the presentation that goes with it. Harris is sure to point out that this is not necessarily meant to be a conversion session, closer to an information session that hopefully reaffirms what students already know and gives them more material with which to work.

“My goal here is not to convince you that climate change is real, I’m actually operating under the assumption that the majority of you know this already,” Harris says as the opening line of his presentation. “Instead I want to convince you and everyone in our community that climate change is a reality that we should all dedicate at least a little more time and energy to solving.”

Indeed, the majority of the public blames homelessness on the person, said panelist Mark Horvath, who experienced homelessness himself before launching the nationally-known nonprofit Invisible People, which creates and circulates videos of homeless experiences in an effort to raise awareness.

“They say, ‘you drug addict, you’re lazy, get a job,’” Horvath said.

With stagnant wages and a tough job market, getting a job will not always lift someone out of homelessness said Horvath, and besides, the real source of homelessness has to do with lack of housing, not the lack of a work ethic.

“The number one cause of homelessness is lack of affordable housing,” Horvath said.

“You add in childhood trauma, mental illness, hurricanes—there are a lot of causes, but as humans, we blame the individual.”

The cost of rent in Ithaca has doubled since 2000 according to U.S. Census data, and it is continuing to climb. Additionally, there is fewer than one percent rental vacancies in Ithaca according to the Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency.

“The apartments that are available, the prices are ludicrous,” Foster said. “You can’t work a full-time minimum wage job and afford housing.”

The minimum wage in Ithaca is $10.40, but according to research from the Washington Post, a person would need to make $18.13 an hour working a full-time job to afford a “decent” one-bedroom apartment in Tompkins County.

That specific part of the effort is in response to mailers sent out by conservative think-tank Heartland Institute to maybe as many as 200,000 public school science teachers around the country in March last year, just as the book was being completed, trying to “influence” teachers’ lessons on climate change.

There are ongoing attempts in places like Idaho to “remove several references to global warming and fossil fuels” from new science education standards, stripping its kindergarten through high school curriculum of global warming information in a vote earlier this month. Similar measures have been considered or implemented in Texas, Florida, and New Mexico just in the last year or so, and under President Donald Trump the federal government has cooled on global warming talk as well.

The goal of the program is to get kids involved with finding solutions for one of society’s great, if not its greatest, present challenges, one for which the world still seems to be stumbling around for answers and plans. There’s no telling what kind of impact that sort of grassroots involvement could accomplish. At a more foundational level, it’s also a confidence builder for students who might not have been presented with the opportunity to receive actual money for projects they’ve worked on.

“It would be just so great to give the kids a chance to be visible in the community and get the support that they need,” Nicholson said. “It’s not a competition so much, more

like our mini-grant program. We don’t pay for people’s time, but we pay for whatever expenses they might have, like printing brochures or new light bulbs.”

The team behind the contest is now working to hone their message through Harris.

Engaging teenagers in the climate change discussion has never been the easiest thing in the world, but at least it seems like so far they have the support of faculty at those schools: realistically, climate change belief still often does break down over party lines, and there was some hesitation in the group that as they moved farther into more conservative parts of Tompkins County and away from Ithaca, the reception to the challenge might not be as warm. That hasn’t been the case though, according to Moore.

There are examples of local issues, many of which received quite a bit of coverage like the drought of a few years ago or the widespread algal blooms in bodies of water in the region. These instances can serve as a visceral way to show the impact of climate change to kids, Nicholson said, something in their home environments that they are most likely already familiar with. Regardless of age or creed, if someone can see something tangible and daily, they’re far more likely to want to address it.

“You have to make it about what’s going to happen in your backyard to get people motivated,” Nicholson said.

With this disparity between the ideal and the reality, it is no wonder why Ithaca’s homeless camp is growing.

After visiting the Jungle for the first time and talking with the men there, Guidi decided to take matters into his own hands.

He invited men from the Jungle into his home by housing them in campers in his backyard in Newfield.

“I knew these people needed places to go,” Guidi said.

Unlike agencies and other formal emergency and transitional housing programs, there were no contracts. Guidi only asked that the men respect his property. Once the men had secured stable housing, Guidi saw vast improvements in their lives. They started rebuilding relationships with their family members, securing jobs, working on their addictions and more.

“People say ‘we can’t give those people a house, they don’t deserve it,’” Guidi said.

“It’s pure ignorance. These men all improved in every area of their life.”

According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, “Housing First does not require people experiencing homelessness to address all of their problems including behavioral health problems, or to graduate through a series of services to programs before they can access housing.”

In other words, this model emphasizes that people need basic necessities like food and a safe place to live before they can address larger problems in their life like health disorders.

Guidi continued to see a need for permanent housing solutions for men living in the Jungle, so he launched Second Wind Cottages, a community of energy-efficient cot-

tages in Newfield. Twelve cottages have been built so far as permanent housing for these men, and ultimately 18 or 19 cottages will be built at a cost of $12,000-$15,000 each.

Working to permanently house people, rather than rely on emergency shelters, can save money in the long-run. The Rescue Mission can house 12 people in their shelter, but 60, 70 sometimes as many as 90 people come to them every night seeking shelter from the bitter cold, Foster said, so they spend money on putting people up in hotel rooms, and these costs can add up. According to Foster, the Rescue Mission is spending a quarter million dollars a month on emergency shelter this winter.

The Housing First model will need to be implemented through policy, but as one audience member noted, there were people missing from this discussion.

“There’s no political presence here,” said Denise Katzman, who has experienced homelessness first-hand. “There’s no one here from the mayor’s office, no one here from the legislature office, and that’s how change happens. It happens from the bottom up and it happens from a policy level.”

The panelists also noted all of the resources and agencies in Tompkins County intended to help people experiencing poverty and homelessness, but according to Guidi they sometimes lack long-term solutions.

“We’re a community rich in services, but we’re poor in housing,” Guidi said. “What can we do other than put a bandaid on it?

What we can do is build affordable housing.

We need something permanent.”

Serbian play has its world premiere at The Cherry

T

raveling from one state to another by car in the United States presents its difficulties: access to a vehicle, several hours of travel, access to accommodations and more. Just traveling across New York State — from Rouses Point, at the Saint Lawrence River, to Clymer, in Chautauqua County — can take about eight to nine hours.

But in Europe — where traveling across a country like Belgium takes three hours total — crossing borders and traveling country to country is far easier than in the U.S. This idea of exploring different parts of Europe comes forward in The Cherry Artspace’s newest production, Rule of Thumb — and also the play’s world premiere. The play will run on the weekends of Feb. 22 to March 4.

Written by Berlin-based Serbian playwright/ screenwriter Iva Brdar, the story follows two women from Sweden who enter a hitchhiking competition, bumming rides from passersby all over Europe. The play captures the women in cars with different drivers in the borderlands of Serbia and Bulgaria as they attempt to travel without spending a penny.

Hitchhiking competitions aren’t anything new in Europe: they’re an overlooked slice of the culture. Rule of Thumb was inspired by true events after Brdar and her boyfriend picked up a couple of Swedish women in Bulgaria on their way from Kraków, Poland (this would be a roughly 15-hour drive). Brdar said she has some experience hitchhiking, too: she’s familiar with the process, both as the driver and the passenger.

And especially with public transportation in certain countries being nonexistent or spotty at best, sometimes hitchhiking is the only option.

The rules are simple: get from one destination to the next in the shortest amount of time. Paying for public transport is prohibited, and overnight accommodations must be satisfied by camping; paying for a hostel or hotel is forbidden.

But for Rule of Thumb, the structure isn’t so simple: the play is written without punctuation.

The script looks and reads like a poem, flowing from one stanza to the next, one scene after another. This emulates a story of fantasy, of whimsy and of mystery. Instead of a worrisome

story about bumming rides, Rule of Thumb is described as comedic, peculiar and trippy by the playwright and some of the crew working on the play. “[The poetic structure] is a kind of counterpoint to a brutal and bizarre story,” Brdar said.

“That’s why I chose not to have realistic dialogue and not to be in this realistic style of writing.

I rather chose what was also not standard so it would add some weird touch into it.”

The play was translated into English and other languages by Ana Brdar, Iva’s sister, a professional translator. Ana has also translated the play into other languages including German — and Germany will host the European premiere in April after The Cherry debuts Rule of Thumb internationally.

Producer of the play and Artistic Director of The Cherry Samuel Buggeln said he and a small committee picked Rule of Thumb after reading through several submitted plays. Buggeln said Contin u ed on page 18

A Delightful, Friendly Visit

ebruary is a great time to watch a socially conscious play that makes you laugh and to which you can bring the kids (or to which they’ll bring you).

Running to Places’ “Wind in the Willows” fits the bill. The show runs Feb. 23-25 in the Beverly J. Martin (BJM) Elementary School library theatre.

Based on the beloved children’s classic, the play – which has music but is not a musical – pokes fun at itself and society in a delightfully British way. One example: A scene in a courtroom makes reference to police brutality, but the accused are weasels pretending to be cows.

resonance is embodied by the wealthy Toad. “He’s lonely and uses his boating and caravanning to make up for it,” said Markwardt, ensuring he’ll be the center of attention. A true one percenter, the rich Toad dispenses extravagant gifts “which mean nothing to him so people will like him,” Markwardt said. Needless to say, this is not the wisest approach.

The ins and outs of friendship center the show; Rat and Mole, for example, must figure out how to stay friends when Mole no longer needs a mentor.

remember when Rob Koll showed up to be the wrestling coach at Cornell. It was 1993, he was five years removed from winning the national championship in the 158-pound weight class as a North Carolina Tar Heel, and he was still relevant on the international stage, winning matches in the World Cups of 1990 and ’93.

Some seasoned wrestling vets were skeptical that such a young coach could bring in the type of wrestlers needed to make Cornell an elite Division 1 power, but others knew that Koll’s father, Bill, was himself a towering figure in collegiate wrestling, his son had excellence bred into him, and were confident that Cornell had made the right decision.

Eighteen Iv y League titles, 11 EIWA championships, 14 individual NCAA champions, 63 All-Americans and about a million Coach of the Year awards later, “the right choice” stands as an understatement. Cornell is by any measure among the nation’s elite programs, and when I sat in the stands at the Friedman Wresting Center on Friday to witness the Tar Heels take the mat against the Big Red, I knew it was a big night for Koll. While Cornell has faced the Tar Heels numerous times since Koll took over, the match would feature Carolina’s first trip to Ithaca.

I watched the coach taking in the scene, reflecting back over the years. Who would have thought that 30 years after winning the national title as a Tar Heel, he would be coaching against his alma mater, in HIS house? The fact that his son, Will Koll, would be wrestling against the Tar Heels added another layer of drama to what was already a great story line.

It’s never a surprise to approach the ticket window and see “Sold Out” signs disappointing hockey fans, and the Friedman Center has taped up those signs many times as well. Friday’s match was one such occasion, and given it was Senior Night, those in attendance were pleased for the opportunity to say “adios and thanks” to the wrestlers who were wrapping up their careers in a Big Red singlet.

Yianni Diakomihalis brings to Cornell one of the most impressive high school wrestling resumes in the nation. Diakomihalis was one of the sport’s most coveted recruits, and a look at his numbers conveys why. Diakomihalis was one of just seven four-time New York state champions while wrestling at Hilton HS. He closed his varsity career on a 210-match win streak, a state record, and a 243-3 career high school mark. He helped his team to four team state titles as a five-time captain, and he was a four-time Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester Division I Wrestler of the Year. He was the State winner of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award as a senior, he was ranked among the top three recruits in the nation by every major service, and he earned a pair of Cadet world championships and two Asics All-America team slots. He joins Gable Stevenson as the only Americans to win two Cadet (ages 15 to 17) World Championships.

Big Red fans are justifiably thrilled that they get to watch this kid – currently ranked #4 – compete for 3 more years.

There really wasn’t much drama in terms of the final outcome, as Cornell dominated the match, winning 32-6 for their ninth straight win. They will now move on to the EIWA tournament, where they will look to win their 12th straight title.

I asked Coach Koll when Diakomihalis showed up on his radar, and he said, “Yianni won his first state title in 8th grade, knocking out Vito Arujau in double OT. At the time Vito’s brother, Nick, was on our team so I was cheering against Yianni! Now, Vito and Yianni are roommates.”

Wow…talk about plot twists.

I asked Yianni when Cornell appeared on his radar, and he offered, “When I was a sophomore, and I went there, and I was around everyone, I loved everything about it.” When asked if he has faced any big surprises, the insightful freshman said, “I am surprised how much I have been able to improve in such a short time. I am physically and mentally stronger, and I appreciate how the coaches are helping me become a much better version of myself.” •

The entire premise is nonsensical, but also meaningful: no line is drawn between human and animal and size and species don’t matter. That gives the story plenty of room to play, and the courtroom scene is just one of many that finds humor where you least expect it.

I loved Kenneth Grahame’s “Wind in the “Willows” as a child, and watching Running to Places’ (R2P) rehearsal was like a visit with old friends. There was curmudgeonly Badger (Jorin Clougherty); and the very British Rat (Ana Luisa Brady McCullough), playing mentor to young Mole (Carys Banford); and of course the f lamboyant Toad (Kayla Markwardt), prone to crashing motorcars. The wideeyed mice have their turn on stage, as do the nefarious weasels and ferrets, who, the cast assured me, are not hated by the other characters.

“They’re not bad people, they’re just doing what’s in their nature,” explained McCullough. This willingness to accept even the badly behaved is one example of the depths hidden within this script. What child doesn’t hope to be loved for who they are, regardless of their misdeeds?

Though this is a kid’s show, the themes and complex messages give adults plenty to appreciate. One such multi-layered

opinions,” said Banford. “His character change is the most noticeable by the end of the show.” As the youngest in her family, Banford said Mole’s character wasn’t hard to relate to.

For Clougherty, playing the elderly Badger was more of a stretch. “I won’t be old for quite some time,” he noted with a grin.

But, he added, having a range of character ages in the show means people of all ages will find characters to relate to.

Younger audience members will certainly appreciate Toad, said Joey Steinhagen, R2P artistic director. “Toad is pure Id in a way that is an absolute delight. He will make 6-year-olds squirm with glee about the mischief he gets up to.”

Don’t expect elaborate, DisneyWorldtype costumes: designer Liz Woods will be offering commentary on polite society with her costumes, like putting the weasels in gangster suits.

And while Rat may be right, as he says in the original book, that “there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats,” watching R2P’s “Wind in the Willow” should come pretty close. •

The Soul Of The Winter Season

Indeed, the show certainly brings winter inside, the photos looking as cold as the outdoors. In one, at a dealership or parking lot, rows of cars are completely covered in white, abandoned for that short period of snowy weather. The sky is dark, black with the night, though a few streetlights blaze in

carts. They lay on their sides, partially submerged in water. One looks bent, as if its wire center has been pushed inward somehow, the metal part aligning its wheels also bent out of shape. There is a melancholy to a picture and a curiosity about the story behind this narrative, what events must have transpired before the scene. To the right of the photograph is another of a parking lot,

the background casting shadows. In another photograph, this one printed with a golden sepia-like hue, a tree branch, its ends sprawling, lays in the middle of a road. Some wheel tread marks are visible in the snow, but the branch appears untouched, simply present.

Some of the photographs document graffiti Arnold came across, such as a spraypainted angel-winged creature whose face is crossed out with a slash. Most pay attention to treescapes and nature, fields and bare trees and the loneliness there, the contrast or details. Two pairs of shoes hang from power lines, one with dark shapes on its sides and the other bright white cleats. The power line gives slightly to the weight, lowering as the tied laces pull it down. The sky, as with the other photos, is complete blackness.

I’m drawn particularly to one photograph, displayed in a framed triptych beside two others. The photograph is of shopping

this one focused on the white lines marking an individual parking space. Piles of snow, plowed and then left behind, create an eyesight line, and a horizontal puddle stretches across the spot. The photograph to the left is of another mound of earth.

What’s interesting about Arnold’s photographs as a whole, apart from their dramatic effect, is that they are each so nondescript that visually they expand beyond the parameters of Ithaca despite taking place here. The focus is not on individuality but on small segments of reality, blatantly grounded in the real yet somehow mystical still, or at the very least dream-like. These photographs are Ithaca, but they are also a snowy everyplace.

The photos are sad but also beautiful, isolating yet at times peaceful. Kudos to Brian Arnold for creating a world of his own, both in the CSMA space and in the outside world that he documents. •

here’s a different atmosphere than normal present in the Community School of Music and Art in wake of Ithaca photographer Brian Arnold’s show, Ithaca By Night. From one show to the next, the colors, artists, media, and subject matter in the gallery inevitably change, displaying anything from large sculptural pieces such as a wooden house flipped upside down by Chris Oliver exhibited three years ago, to Joyce Stillman-Meyer’s vibrantly colored photorealistic paintings such as one of gleaming ref lective ornaments on display during the Annual Open Show this past December. But Arnold’s collection of photographs stands out in its sparseness and unquestioning black and white. There’s a quiet to it. There’s stillness. Stark winter nightscapes, snow-drenched and devoid of people or wildlife, contrast against the

white walls, and most of the photographs are surprisingly unframed and displayed in any semblance of order. Some are printed larger than others, several so small you have to inch your way closer to examine them to find: a basketball net, a wire fence, snow mounds, frozen earth.

Ithaca By Night is on display through March 30 and is comprised of work Arnold produced between 2009 and 2013, documenting winter nights and the passing of time with only himself and his headphones as company. “I photographed in complete white-outs and subzero temperatures,” he writes in his statement, “but I found an incredible peace, joy, and solitude going to malls, parks, drainage chutes, parking lots, and wetlands, seeing how much I could see in these spaces. I felt like I saw something never seen before, the rich landscape of

this production “really rose to the top,” and its experimental writing style set it apart from other works him and his team combed through.

Director Beth F. Milles and Buggeln have taken this freeform writing style and applied it to the set and play direction. The Cherry will dangle Christmas lights from the ceiling, transform a runway into a road — the imagination of the venue mirrors the imaginative nature of the play.

This idea is especially reflected in the theme of wandering: of looking for something, of what the characters are not quite sure. But perhaps the answer lies in the end of the trip. The possibilities demand to be explored.

“There are layers of possibility. ... Part of what The Cherry creates is the opportunity to invent worlds,” Milles said. “...

[The women] meet all of these various characters and the characters will need and want something from them that will totally change their minds each time. So it’s all open to interpretation.”

Collaboration between artists has also expanded the scope of the premiere of Rule of Thumb. Milles said this production has allowed her to work with artists she hasn’t seen in years, and it also brought together creators who have never been involved with a play together. The energy of a variety of voices brings the production to life, infusing the characters and set with fantastic

“The Cherry has created the opportunity for many of us in Ithaca to collaborate when we have not previously had that opportunity,” Milles said. “The kind of plays that Sam and the company have chosen are so much fun to discover. So I think the whole process is so much fun to work on.”

Working with different actors and crew members on this experimental play structure has allowed Milles to tackle rehearsals in a different way. Instead of running through select scenes each day with the entire cast present, rehearsals instead mirror the structure of a film. Each day the lead actors practice a different scene with a respective driver — just like filming a few takes of a scene a day in a movie.

But come Feb. 22, the cast and crew will be ready for the world premiere of Rule of Thumb. Brdar herself may even make an appearance: the mastermind behind the chaos of European hitchhiking.

“The U.S. has that sort of feel. We’re the ‘United’ States, but what is it to be united when you’ve got a Louisiana and you’ve got a Massachusetts?” Buggeln said. “... Rule of Thumb is very creative and intuitive and it’s not very literal. Most plays from other countries take a more abstract or unusual take on the world. The feeling is very goofy and fun.” •

A Tale Revisited

ules Massenet was the dominant opera composer of Belle Époque France, composing around 36 operas between 1867–1912, many of which premiered at the leading company, the Paris OpéraComique.

Today he is mostly known for two of them: Manon and Werther, both mainstays of the repertoire. The erotic Thais still pops up quite frequently (with its famous Meditation for violin and orchestra.)

Massenet’s Cendrillon is based on the Charles Perrault version (1697)—who added the glass slippers, the pumpkin coach and the fairy godmother—with a libretto by Henri Cain. Perrault. It premiered at the Opéra-Comique in 1899, enjoying an initial run of over fifty performances. It made it to Chicago in 1911 with

Massanet follows the general outline we know from Disney, adding a third act that takes place in a forest where Fairy Godmother tests Cinderella (Lucette in this telling) and Prince Charming. Also,

the famed opera singer Mary Garden; then it fell out of the repertoire for the most part until the 1980s, when the New York City Opera under the management of Beverly Sills successfully mounted a production directed by the Canadian choreographer Brian MacDonald.

It’s a hot ticket again, finally making it to the Met this season in a sumptuous production staged by Laurence Pelly and headlined by Joyce diDonato, (this production, first mounted at Santa Fe in 2006, is also the first time (2011) the opera appeared at the Royal Opera House.) Later this year it finally returns to Chicago when the Lyric Opera of Chicago takes up Pelly’s staging.

Local opera enthusiasts have their own chance to catch a newly conceived version of Cendrillon, as the always adventurous opera program at Ithaca College presents the fairy tale as their annual offering.

Performances will take place in Hoerner Theatre on February 23, 27, March 1 and 3 at 8 p.m., as well as a matinee performance on February 25 at 2 p.m.

Conducted by IC’s Christopher Zemliauskas (who also conducted last year’s vocally resplendent production of Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito.) Noted NYC director Eric Pearson is the guest stage director.

Cendrillon is a showcase for female singers with four major roles: Cendrillon (soprano); Fairy Godmother (soprano léger); Mme. De la Haltière, the stepmother (contralto) and a trousers role in Prince Charming (described as a Falcon soprano, a particular darkish dramatic soprano style in French Opera.) There is also a beautiful sextet of women singers as the Fairy Godmother’s attendants.

Reviewing the Royal Opera House production, Anna Picard of The Independent writes “Massenet’s fantasy traces the history of French opera from the rustic wheeze of a Lullian musette to the grand divertissements of Versailles, the nightsweats of Berlioz, the frank sensuality of Bizet, the tart satires of Offenbach, and the subtle assimilation of the Wagnerian aesthetic.… But Cendrillon also points to the future. Listen carefully to the lavendergrey chromatics of the enchanted forest and there are pre-echos of [Debussy’s] Pelléas et Mélisande, a work premiered only four years later.” •

alerie June has the rare gift of knowing when the time is right to create a song and tell its story as a singer-songwriter. On her recent albums, Pushin’ Against the Stone and The Order of Time, while June sings them, she is able to somehow blend the music of countryblues and a softened gospel-jazz style.

While June’s dominant talent seems to be her songwriting, it is her gentle Tennessean twang that also carries the tunes she sings so that one feels they are listening to the music of the past, and yet new music too.

During the last few years June has performed for both small and large audiences from Asia to Europe. June will be on the road again in the States this year and will bring her act to Ithaca’s Hangar Theatre on February 24. The Ithaca Times recently interviewed June about her music.

Ithaca Times: Can you say when you were first drawn to music?

Valerie June: I was first drawn to music when I was a baby and they took me to church!

IT: Was it an event or a feeling that first drew you to play and write music? (Did your family also encourage you when you were younger?)

VJ: We all sang. We all still sing! None of us really thought about doing for a living.

IT: The element of time and being original seem to carry you in your music, but how do you spend the time so you are connected to the music and the stories that do come?

VJ: As I’m sure you know, we change in time. So currently I have been spending time reading loads of books, cooking, learning new things on the instruments, dancing, taking baths in herbs, trying to see friends, and I usually make time everyday for affirmations to keep my mind in a positive place.

IT: Do you feel your biggest talent is your songwriting?

VJ: I feel like my biggest talent has yet to be revealed, and I think songwriting is a key step to helping me discover my greatest potential for this life.

IT: You have described the process of music and song writing as a kind of jungle or labyrinth, but when do you know or feel the process for a song with its music is complete?

VJ: It’s never finished because songs are alive. It’s like I have to take a picture of the song. I know that the things in the picture will move around, maybe grow, maybe change. It’s just a snapshot of what the song is in that moment.

IT: Why do you feel the stories and music such as “Somebody to Love” or “Workin’ Woman Blues” must be both tangible and original?

VJ: In order for me to sing a song over 200 times each year, I’ve got to be able to personalize it. I’ve got to make it my own.

I think every woman who has had the workin’ woman blues can find herself in that song. The same goes for those who have loved or lost and “Somebody to Love”. It has to relate on a personal level to each listener.

IT: What music are you drawn to lately?

And what do you find that is good about it?

Is it the lyrics or the music?

VJ: Black Sabbath - Masters of Reality has been on my regular list. It’s the lyrics.

IT: I came across an interview recently where you say you are working on a new release. Can you tell us how that process is coming? And when it may be coming out?

VJ: I am always writing, and that’s as much as I can share!

IT: Would you like to add anything more about your music?

Getting A Tax Refund?

ith its first show of the spring semester, the Handwerker Gallery at Ithaca College is taking strides in what may be the best art show in town. A joint exhibition, on trend with the gallery’s recent proclivity for dual shows, this month’s curation involves a re-creation of art world advocates and literary icons Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas’ famous Parisian salon, as well as a collection of work by artist Andrea Geyer who advocates for recognition of women’s contributions behind art world modernity as we know it today. Both shows are different experiences from one another, and yet both are beautifully entwined, providing context into the “modern” era of the early twentieth century and highlighting women’s vital involvement and promotion of the arts, as well as negotiating salient questions of authenticity, novelty, and revisionist history.

One show, Salon de Fleurus, is titled after Toklas and Stein’s address at 27 Rue de Fleurus, where they held their salon from 1904-1934. Standing as the first instance in which several now-famous artists’ works were displayed together, the salon included numerous paintings by Pablo Picasso, Paul Cézanne, and Henri Matisse, all of which covered the walls in what nowadays would be an art enthusiast’s fantasy. But standing inside the Handwerker, the salon is made real again.

Re-creations of these paintings, from Picasso’s Boy Leading a Horse to Matisse’s Joy of Life, exist again in a space similar to the one in which they were originally shown. Furniture akin to what Stein and Toklas once owned create a seating area with couches, dining table complete with candles as centerpiece, and even a fireplace adorned with decorative vases. French music plays from a (now digitalized) oldstyle record player, and the lighting is soft.

The space feels like a home, like a different era. The show, it becomes apparent, is not about the artwork but about the experience of the space itself. The past becomes activated again, but in a parallel universe of re-enactment.

The exhibition is an excellent method of exposing those less familiar with modern art to it, or to excite those who are already fans. It brings viewers back to a pivotal moment and emphasizes Stein’s critical role in exposing these artists to the public and thus framing much of what we see as great art today. However, the space is innately different from its original by the nature of its reproduction. Challenging notions of authenticity, the space feels real but is also not what it purports to be: a lived-in salon of 1920s Paris. It instead enacts a nostalgic facade. But in taking control of the scene, in being able to curate it and place it into a larger historical con-

text, the re-creation becomes all the more significant, guiding viewers to see, as the show’s statement asserts, through the lens of Stein.

The second exhibition is Collective Weave, in which Andrea Geyer asks, “What do you imagine when you hear the word Modernism?” The show includes pieces such as Ghost, in which a politicallyactive woman’s mink fur coat is left hanging on a coat rack, and Timefold (from the notebooks of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney), in which photographs zoom in on the remnants of ripped pages from writings by the founder of the Whitney Museum, marking gaps in history. Revolt, They Said is a massive ongoing diagram, in which Geyer maps and delineates 850 women who have each had a part in the American art world and its cultural landscape. Insistence, a video piece, is equally as resonant.

“My desire is to make you realize that art is not dead,” the narrator (Geyer) states.

“It can never die while we exist, but is constantly, through our living, existing.” She outlines the history of numerous women’s involvement with the arts, including the founders of the Museum of Modern Art, all three of whom were women. These are histories that often go unrecorded, that were, for a time, considered insignificant.

And yet, like Stein, each of these countless woman have had a significant impact on the art world in every capacity, on its formation, its evolution, and its persistence to remain relevant and alive.

Heads Up Films for the Week

Marvel’s Black Panther, co-written and directed by Ryan Coogler; Gotham By Gaslight, produced and directed by Sam Liu, available on home video. uentin Tarantino and I are roughly the same age, but I didn’t get into the ’70s blacksploitation era of film until he came to prominence and started talking about Pam Grier and Sid Haig, and filmmakers like Mario Van Peebles and Jack Hill. At the risk of sounding like a honky, I feel like I had something of that ’70s experience, that thing of finally seeing someone on the screen that you can relate to, when I saw the first Thursday preview screening of Marvel’s Black Panther.

Part of it must be the fact that Black Panther — which opened to $197 million this past weekend, and it’s in the vanguard of a very small sub-genre, the black-driven superhero movie. Until now, what was out there? The Blade series, Spawn and Steel, and the latter

Meanwhile, over in DC’s home video animated universe, the legend of Batman takes a rare and surprisingly bloody detour into the horror genre with Gotham by Gaslight. An animated film inspired by DC’s “Elseworld” series, the film takes the Dark Knight (voiced

by Bruce Greenwood) back to a Gotham City at the end of the 19th century, where he attempts to take down Jack the Ripper.

Much like the cartoon version of The Killing Joke, the story was too short to sustain even a DC animated feature and has been expanded with additional scenes and a lot more Easter Egg characters and cameos than were featured in the original comic. But I had read The Killing Joke and really hated the additional material. I haven’t read this one, but for some reason the tone and the casting really worked here for me; it was interesting how easily the Batman cast can mutate to suit almost any story in any time period. Also, I really liked the look of Batman here, a rough-hewn bat mask and a swirling, cape-like duster coat.

And while I haven’t read the comic in question, I have learned that those l’il devils at DC changed the identity of “Saucy Jack” (apologies to Spinal Tap), so even if you’ve read the comic, you’ll

Another part — for me — is Marvel unveiling another amazing world of characters unfamiliar to me, since I never read the comics as a kid. (Actually, I really only read Spider-Man and Bat-Man, so the Marvel series has been schooling me in the backstories of hundreds of characters known world-wide.

A side benefit of the Marvel series: it’s been like discovering a long-lost library of stories.)

Prince T’Challa AKA Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), introduced to the series in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, is on a whole new level here, presiding over an exotic and exciting African landscape full of vividly sketched personalities, devious villains and amazing sights. Caught at a personal crossroads, he must assume the throne from his slain father, resolve some daddy issues and deal with a nefarious smuggler (Andy Serkis, the best red herring in the biz) and a threat that’s surprisingly close to home for our hero.

As I said, all the characters here were new to me, but not to a great deal of the audience. When Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Okoye (Dana Gurrira from “The Walking Dead”) show up and start kicking ass, well, it was quite an experience for me, and a sense of longoverdue recognition in the superhero
