s the City of Ithaca and Tompkins County deal with what seems to be a significant uptick in the homeless population, the annual estimation of homeless people spending cold nights on the streets is taking a different form this year.

The Point in Time Count (PITC), as it’s known, is the required yearly count of the homeless population spending the night outside, always held at the end of January as required by the federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) department. Normally, the PITC would include an on-the-street component, during which volunteers might ride around with law enforcement officials on their nightly rounds and use the opportunity to count homeless people sleeping on the streets instead of utilizing housing or shelter services.

“We did a scaled-down version of it,” said Danielle Harrington, housing services director for TCAction. “Every year HUD requires a sheltered count, so that stayed the same, all the agencies providing housing or emergency shelter, [and] we complete these forms and submit them. But the unsheltered street count changed a little this year. We don’t have to report the numbers to HUD the way we used to in other years, but we thought it was important to still collect that information locally.”

Film screening educates on Ithaca’s connection to nuclear disarmament movement

S

ince the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, through the days of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and lasting throughout the years of the Cold War, nuclear weapons have been a hot-button issue for many people. Considering that some of these weapons have the power to destroy great centers of population, for years many people have been fighting to see them disappear.

That fight has been going on for years, and now it seems to be creating the dialogue people both want and need to hear.

Among most vocal opponents of nuclear weaponization are members of the Plowshare movement, whose name is derived from a passage in the Bible, Isaiah 2:3-4, which says, “And He shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares,

and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”

A Plowshare member and local Ithacan, Clare Grady, has made a name for herself over the decades with numerous actions against the military-industrial complex, though she is facing consequences now as her trial approaches for a break-in at a nuclear facility in Georgia.

She’s held events over the last few weeks to rally support for her cause, including a march around downtown Ithaca that included dozens of anti-war supporters on Saturday, Feb. 2 and a movie showing and speech the following day at Cinemapolis.

The movement has sparked protests that have led to people breaking into nuclear storage facilities and damaging military weapons and other

property. Two of these protests were chronicled in the documentary “The Priests, The Nuns, and the Bombs,” which was shown over the weekend.

The event was hosted by King’s Bay Plowshares, with donations being made to the Free Clare Grady fund. Grady was arrested for leading a group into Naval Submarine Base King’s Bay, a U.S. Navy base.

The documentary starts off talking about Sister Megan Rice, an 84-year-old nun who led a small group into the Y-12 Facility in Tennessee in 2012. During hearings about the break-in and how it could have happened, more often than not, the greatest concern was how the numerous security measures that the federal government put in place failed.

This bothered Rice, because most media coverage as well as hearings about the break-in were about the inefficient security measures, not about the protesting of nuclear weapons.

However, this wasn’t all Rice’s idea, but rather the result of seeing a similar series of events unfold 2,000 miles northeast in Tacoma, Washington. Five people (Father Bill Bichsel, Sister Ann Montgomery, Father Steven Kelly, Sister Susan Crane, and Lynne Greenwald) took the adventurous step of breaking into the former Naval Submarine Base Bangor, home to several nuclear submarines. Northside

Community members voice Carpenter Park concerns

T

he new Carpenter Business Park development, near Route 13, is almost finished its preliminary design phase but is still facing criticism from members of the public, particularly the vocal Northside United neighborhood group. The group held their monthly meeting Monday night at the Quaker Meeting House to discuss the proposal.

One part of the design that people are concerned with is the location of the affordable housing building, which has become the proverbial half empty/half full glass of water.

For some members of the community they are looking at the buildings location as towards the front of the site, while many others see the building as another segregated affordable housing building.

Since the other buildings on the site, like a downtown

location for a Cayuga Medical Center (CMC) office and some other mixed-use buildings, are centered more towards the middle and rear of the site, many residents want to ensure that the affordable housing building isn’t going to be built in a way that separates it from the rest of the complex. Some residents gave suggestions on how to fix this issue, but the design team, Whitham Planning and Design, has run into a few constraints.

One problem is that the site borders the Community Gardens and is near several NYSEG power lines which render several sections of the site either unbuildable, or strictly height-limited. The designers have worked around that and are still tinkering with the layout of the design, planning to submit them to the City of Ithaca some time next week.

n Tuesday, the morning of Feb. 5, the City of Ithaca reported a water main break at the intersection of Valley Road and Cornell Walk. The break was listed as reported at 9 a.m., and a crew would likely have to spend the remainder of the work day repairing it.

It’s one of the most common Sights in Ithaca over the last few months: news alerts flash across the city’s website and into the inboxes of residents all around the area detailing emergency construction that has to be completed to stop a water main break.

Assistant Superintendent of Public Works Erik Whitney said the city is currently seeing an average of four to five water main breaks per week, a significant increase over years

prior; Whitney said most years the city would see an increase around this time of year, but not to this extent. Each break, he said, costs the city thousands of dollars in repair and labor costs. A normal year would probably see about 30 water main breaks, most of which would happen in the cold-weather months.

“Soil underneath the streets has moisture in it, and the freeze/thaw cycle produces an expansion and contraction which even when its down four or five feet, the expansion and contraction exerts pressure on the cast-iron pipes,” Whitney said, which can cause them to eventually break. “That’s typical of movement above pressing down on the pipe.”

Since the buildings are supposed to be market rate, which one resident said was “slang for luxury housing,” some of the community members are worried about gentrification and how this could adversely affect their neighborhood.

Many urban centers have been over-run with overpriced housing that has impacted and changed the monetary landscape of neighborhoods, with attendees noting the new City Centre development as an example of market rate housing secretly meaning luxury housing. Designer Scott Whitham said that rental price hasn’t been determined Wyet.

Despite this reassurance, one resident was concerned about the requirements that will be implemented for people to be eligible for the affordable housing building. The salary requirement is going to be somewhere between families and people who earn $29,000 and $34,000, though this may shift throughout the design process. Another question about the affordable housing building was about who will be living there. While the design

calls for multi-use apartments, many people wanted to ensure that families who are eligible for affordable/low-income housing will be able to get it with ease.

Other questions and comments related to whether or not the design shown last night was going to be the one presented to the City of Ithaca.

Whitham responded no, saying that in the coming days, the design will be changing to iron out any flaws, but also so that any changes community members have will be taken under consideration.

Despite their concerns, it did seem that most community members at least appreciated the amount of community outreach Whitham and his team have done during the process to garner feedback. Throughout the design process, they have been routinely consulting the community on the layout of the buildings to best ensure that the community gardens will remain unaffected by the development and any construction that goes on.

emphasized by last week’s two-day swing from highs in the teens to Monday’s balmy 60 degrees, makes the freeze/ thaw cycle worse on pipes as opposed to just consistently icy temperatures. Whitney said he thinks that though the city’s sewer infrastructure is aging (and is in the very long-term process of being replaced with new pipes, as evidenced by the months-long construction seen over the summer on East State Street), that probably can’t be considered a universal cause for the uptick in breaks.

“I don’t think that would be much of a factor,” Whitney said. “Some of the pipes are in great condition, some aren’t.”

Each water main break takes a crew of city workers about 8-10 hours to repair entirely. Whitney also estimated that the City of Ithaca has to spend between $5,000 and $10,000 to fully address each water main break, meaning that expenditure has likely already reached above $100,000 this year. Though the worst of Ithaca’s winter might be over, as it’s tough to imagine

many more nights of negative temperatures, Whitney said the frequency of water main breaks normally doesn’t slow down until April. He said 80 percent of a year’s breaks normally occur between December and March. Despite that, Whitney said so far the city has not run into a situation this year in which they haven’t had the workforce to properly address several main breaks occurring simultaneously, though that might be challenged as the months wear on.

“So far, so good,” Whitney said. “We can deploy two crews to any two breaks at any hour of the day. If we’re looking at a third break simultaneously, we might be able to do it. [That] hasn’t happened this year, but it’s happened in the past.”

Neighborhood Plan

Southside next in line for Neighborhood Plan

A

fter over two years of work and several months of community input and tweaking, the Greater Southside Neighborhood Plan is now heading into consideration by the City of Ithaca.

The neighborhood plan is part of the City of Ithaca’s ongoing Phase II of its Comprehensive Plan, which mandates that all neighborhoods in the city will receive neighborhood plans that can serve to guide development over the foreseeable future. After watching several other neighborhoods receive either plans or design guidelines over the previous few years, Southside was next on the Planning Department’s docket.

Generally speaking, there don’t appear to be a ton of significant changes at first glance, though certain definitions that were previously stated for Southside have either been tweaked or refined since they were first articulated for the land.

“Housing is and will remain the predominant land use,” the plan states. “While much of the Southside is already built out and few vacant lots exist, there are opportunities to provide additional housing units on underutilized parcels and surface parking lots. In addition, existing homes could incorporate more accessory housing units. These added units will offer more opportunities for people to live within the city while also making home ownership more affordable. These are significant benefits for the community, but it will be important to ensure that this new construction is architecturally compatible with existing buildings to maintain the desired neighborhood character.”

Under the current formulation of the plan, the vast majority of Southside would stay as traditional residential, which sticks to much of what is seen in the neighborhood now anyway. In terms of new development, it looks like that would be restricted to “traditional residential building

style,” even with multi-family structures and accessory apart-

ment additions that would be allowed to gradually foster density development. As stated several times throughout the document, the actual new development for Southside is likely moderate, unlike the more obviously significant plans in downtown or elsewhere in the city.

Surrounding the center of the neighborhood, which is entirely slated for traditional residential, is residential transition and more mixed-use options further away from the center, which is defined here as basically the intersection of Plain Street and Center Street.

That’s actually a consistent theme of the land-use suggestions: pushing for some density and infill development, but with an eye to ensuring the character of the neighborhood is preserved, particularly in the Henry St. John Historic District. Perhaps this was always the desire, but with all the lamenting of “neighborhood character” that Ithacans do, often as an indirect resistance to infill development, it’s easy to think the Planning Department wanted to spell that out on the front-end before any

development or zoning controversies arise. A minimum green space requirement is also suggested.

To its credit, the city also addresses the topic of gentrification in Southside, an ongoing occurrence that speaks not only to the city’s widespread housing shortage issues, but also to the pricing out of poor, often black people in Southside who are forced to move farther out of the city as higherincome people move in. Yet outside of keeping affordable housing developments properly funded with city assistance on grant applications and the like, actual solutions are scarce.

“Gentrification became a concern of many residents in the early 2000s and remains a concern of long-term residents today,” the plan states. “Sale prices for single-family homes in the neighborhood have risen by more than 265% in the past twenty years. For rental units, fair market rents for two-bedroom apartments in the city have increased by 71% since 2000. In contrast, the median family income has increased by 64% over the same period.

Many individuals and families who have lived in the neighborhood are being forced to seek housing elsewhere, often outside of the city.”

While the statistics are specific, the actual steps the City of Ithaca plans to take to facilitate the affordability of the neighborhood are far more vague. Housing recommendations include encouraging accessory apartments and simplifying the approval process for them and making sure the neighborhood’s already available affordable housing remains financially stable and open. But perhaps the most salient point of the recommendations is also its least detailed.

“Work with private property owners to maintain affordability of existing units within the study area,” it states, without explaining how or by what mechanism that could be achieved.

Prior to this, both stations had alternated between talk radio and classical music offerings. WSKG is 90.9 FM on the Ithaca dial, WSQX is 92.1. ▶▶ Thumbs Down - Look for a full story on this later this week, but National Book Auctions has been hit with another lawsuit in Tompkins County. It’s another episode in the fallout after the auction house’s owner, David Hall, was arrested and charged with one count of larceny over allegations he didn’t compensate hundreds of thousands of dollars he made off of auctioning other people’s property. The question has to be asked: while he is jailed or on trial, why is National Book Auctions allowed to keep operating? ▶▶ Heard - In another story we’ll be updating on our site this week, Gary McCaslin had his charges dropped this week.

YOUR LETTERS On the 46 South Street affordable housing project

T

he Trumansburg Board of Zoning Appeals is holding a legally required Public Hearing on Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Trumansburg Fire Hall.

The agenda includes a request for a Use variance for the former Millspaugh lumberyard site on Cayuga St. Since it has been unoccupied for more than 2 years it has lost its “grandfathered” commercial use and will require a use variance to allow a new business that is interested in purchasing the property.

The agenda also includes requests for Area variances by INHS for the 46 South St. aka Hamilton Square project. For over 2 years the applicant has proposed a project that doesn’t meet zoning regulations, all the while assuring all that it did. Now the developer admits that they need variances for both the parking requirements and the front yard setbacks!

INHS is asking to be allowed to reduce the required parking spaces by almost half! This request is due to the fact that the project is too large for the site and the only way the applicant can comply with existing zoning requirements is to put parking in the front yard.

INHS is also asking for a variance to reduce the required front yard set-back from 50’ to 25’.

While both if these changes may have

SURROUNDED BYREALITY some potential value in certain circumstances they need to be addressed through legislative changes not zoning variances.

Granting these variances would be precedent setting for the entire village! A welldesigned project would not need them.

Ask the BZA to deny the variances and require the developer to go back and design a project that meets current zoning requirements.

On the possibly racist actions by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam Virginia Governor Ralph Northam lacks any credibility. First, he apologized for being either the Klansman or student in blackface shown on his yearbook page.

Hours later, he claimed upon closer examination that he was neither. Northam went on to say he never purchased or viewed his graduation yearbook until this issue came to light several days ago. He also admitted wearing black face as part of a Michael Jackson costume dance contest in 1984. Is it credible to believe that no classmate ever brought his yearbook page photo to his attention? If Northam was a Republican, there would have been a political lynching. He would have already resigned from office. Democrats

I’ll never know for sure, because she did the prudent thing and fled to the bathroom before I could finish. I have it on pretty good

Agonizingly, at the moment of truth, with my heart pounding, I approached her and proceeded to stammer uncontrollably. It wasn’t just that she wasn’t interested; to my dismay she seemed to exhibit all the symptoms of being intensely alarmed. It’s kind of a blur now, but drenched as I was in a medley of flop sweat, Hai Karate after-shave lotion and Clearasil, I must have given the appearance of someone who was at best deathly ill and at worst and more likely, highly contagious. Plus, I was aiming, in the

A $60 arrangement of cut flowers certain to wilt within 72 hours is an acceptable gift, but a Home Depot gift card in the same amount is not.

This I do know for sure: If you are in a relationship, ignore Valentine’s Day at your extreme peril.

The temptation is to rail against the manipulating corporate big shots at Hallmark and FTD, but really, some of us need this holiday. It’s true. Sure, it’s a little forced and one is best advised to play it safe, but I’d miss it if it were gone, and besides, what else is going on this time of year? Just tough it out. Soon February will be a memory and March, the 11th-most-glorious month of the year, will be here.

YS seems to be on the road to legalizing “marijuana.” However, the reality is that it will (in effect) actually legalize THC which is the active component of the marijuana plant used recreationally. The risk is that commercial corporations will market THC in forms and concentrations far beyond what is prudent for public health and beyond

Should NYS legalize THC, it should follow the pattern of legalization of alcohol. The product must be regulated in form, concentration and packaging. For four hours, the group walked around the base until they finally made it to the nuclear bunkers, where the weapons were stored. Once they were found, they were arrested and soon began awaiting lengthy trials.

In this case, all five people were thought of as outstanding members of the community whose motivations seemed clear, considering they were not intent on harming anyone. However, their defense of doing the protest out of necessity did not convince the jury and they were found guilty on all charges.

While the maximum the group would have received on their sentences was at least 10 years, they instead received reduced sentences, with the longest one being 15 months in prison. Despite this, though, they were all released several months early. After Rice heard about this, she felt that this was what needed to happen at Y-12. Rice was also convicted after she used a similar defense to the Bangor

Five and was convicted to six months in prison, though she was released after two months because the charge of sabotage was dropped.

The film is a journey through the hearts and minds of a weary movement who have been fighting for some kind of denuclearization treaty to be adopted not only by the United Nations but also by the nine other countries that currently possess nuclear weapons. Other moments in the film are peppered with information about how some of these people joined this movement after seeing the effects of the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the detonation of the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Grady, along with six other religious peace activists, broke into the King’s Bay facility in Georgia for just such a protest.

Grady spoke about the importance of the plowshares movement once the film ended and why it’s important to spread the word.

She said that this weapon doesn’t know how to discern between those people that are fighting and the innocent lives that are taken. She went on to say that these protests need to continue to ensure that the movement sees strong growth.

Having no regrets about what she did, Grady was open about her experiences in breaking into the King’s Bay facility.

She ended the discussion saying that they should feel comfortable about speaking about this topic and that the dialogue must keep growing.

Warren Real Estate has grown during her 12 years at the office, blossoming from a single office to five, serving 13 counties with 110 real estate agents. Warren said she has gradually stepped up her community involvement, becoming president of the Friends of Ithaca College Executive Committee, which aims to bridge the gap between the community and the college.

She is also currently serving on the steering committee for Love Living at Home, an organization that helps aging adults who want to continue living on their own instead of in a senior living facility.

Though a real estate agency might not be the most conventional leader in community service, Warren explained that the connection is really quite simple: If Ithaca and the rest of Tompkins County thrive, it lifts up everything in the area.

That sentiment, plus the agency’s deep roots in the community (having operated for over 60 years), motivate its efforts to facilitate growth.

“We always say that with the health of our community, we’re very invested in that,” Warren said. “When the community does well, we do well as an organization [...] It’s something we take very seriously, and it’s a big initiative for us.”

Warren said she was interested in continuing her community engagement, particularly by working in conjunction with organizations like Habitat for Humanity and other groups doing vital work in the area. Being born and raised in Ithaca, she said she takes personal enjoyment and enrichment from knowing she’s helping the community that she grew up in.

Your teammate inbounds the ball to you, and you take it up the court. You can’t believe that RPI is not contesting you at all. You take one step past half-court, there is one second left, and you launch the ball. The clock hits double zero, and the net dances. Bedlam ensues. After that memorable moment, I spoke to Jim Mullins, Ithaca College’s men’s basketball coach, and he said, “Man, that was crazy! Annie is a really reliable player, and she missed a couple of easy ones, then she buries a halfcourt shot to tie it and she scores six of the team’s ten points in OT

Mullins said, “Our win on Saturday was an ugly one, but like (football coach) Dan Swanstrom said, ‘All wins are good wins.’

I think we might have had a ‘hangover’ of sorts after our big win over Skidmore on Friday, and that’s understandable. They are the league’s top team, [but] they came into our place and we trucked them.”

Indeed, the Bombers steamrolled Skidmore 94-62, handing the visitors their most lopsided loss in eight years.

Mullins talked about a very special senior night for Peter Ezema, who notched his 33rd career double-double with 15 rebounds and 13 points. He went 5-for-10

on the night, including a crowd-pleasing fast break monster dunk in the second half. Ezema also recorded six steals to push him over 200 for his career (a school record).

Mullins conveyed how impressed he is with Ezema who hails from Nigeria and has been in the country on his own since he was 15, according to Mullins.

“His is really a neat story,” Mullins said.

“On senior night, the parents usually come and are recognized, but Peter’s parents are still in Nigeria. His high school coach and guidance counselor came, as did someone from here on campus who has been a great support for him, and he had an excellent game.”

In Mullins’ words, “We also got a big game from Matt Flood, who always does the important things that might not get noticed. He draws charges, things like that, and his senior leadership helps us immensely.”

Mullins also mentioned freshman George Sikoryak, saying “He’s like the Energizer Bunny. I never saw a kid smile so much. He’s a tough kid, and he grabbed some big rebounds.”

For senior night, the Bomber men recognized Matt Flood, Peter Ezema and Jake Mitchell.

The Official 2019 Chili Cook-Off Preview

here are countless varieties of chili, and they come from just about everywhere imaginable, whether it’s the pages of a cookbook or handed down over generations by family members who swear they’ve perfectly refined their recipe.

There will be dozens of them on display this weekend at the 22nd annual Chili CookOff, held in downtown Ithaca on Saturday, Feb. 9 from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. The competition will be joined this year by a comedy festival,

which will feature a show on Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn. As of this week, 42 different participants have registered to enter their chilis, each of them looking to unseat Taverna Banfi of Cornell University’s Statler Hotel, which took home the top prize last year in the meat division with its “Burning Hog Chili.” In the separate vegan division, Gorgers nabbed the top spot with its chipotle lime quinoa chili.

Another top finisher from last year was Cayuga Medical Center (CMC), which was awarded second place for their “medicine man beef short rib” chili. They’ve put together a string of successful performances since first joining the competition in 2008, hauling in three overall victories, and this year they’ll be bringing a T-bone chili by hospital chef Jim Durkee that’s light on beans but with extra shredded meat, according to CMC’s Nathan

Scheer. It can be challenging to overcome the stigma against food in healthcare, but Scheer said participating in the cook-off came naturally as the hospital tried to improve its food quality for patients.

“In 2004, the hospital really started focusing on our food service, trying to get away from the views that people have on healthcare food,” Scheer said.

every year who haven’t been introduced to Durkee’s chili prowess. Yet Scheer did not take any of the bait, declining to engage in trash talk towards other participants.

Fortunately, other competitors were more willing.

CMC’s reputation has bought them one thing: a target on its back, per se. One example is Bickering Twins, which will be competing in the cook-off for the first time since moving to its downtown location.

They’re cooking up a perfected version birria, the same dish they used two years ago but weren’t satisfied with how it came out. This year, though, they’ve tweaked the recipe and would put it up against any of the other chilis that will be entered.

“I think we could [win],” said Kevin Adelman, co-owner of Bickering Twins.

“It’s going to be a pretty awesome dish. Is it Cayuga Medical Center that has won so many years? I want to be able to beat them. I think we could do it. They do well.”

Brian Maloney, Gorgers’ chili chef, said they will once again be entering both vegan and meat divisions. For the meat, he’s got a Gorgers classic: chipotle andouille sausage. But for the vegan entry, he’s debuting a new chili, one featuring bourbon, butternut squash and pinto beans, called the “Kentucky Monk Chili.”

Over the years, of course, some rivalries have accumulated. Gorgers has been in the competition for four years, and now

Maloney’s settled on his target, at least for this year.

“We want to take Ithaca Bakery down,” Maloney said, smiling.

As for one of this year’s newcomer teams, from the new Your CBD Store, Maloney does not seem to be intimidated by their listed special ingredient: watersoluble CBD oil.

“Not worried,” Maloney said.

In its debut year, Your CBD Store manager Chelsea Newton said the store would have staffers there who are well-versed in CBD use, in order to assuage any concerns attendees might have about ingesting the ingredient.

“I think it’ll add an experience that people won’t get in any other chilis.

They’re not going to get CBD anywhere else,” Newton said. “Other than that, it shouldn’t alter the taste any.”

Newton said the Your CBD Store booth will provide the option to add the CBD, or not, to an old family chili recipe, but she would not divulge any ingredients. This being their first year in the competition, Newton said they don’t have any rivals yet, but also that it would be foolish to count out the store just because it’s new to the competition.

“There’s never a long-term winner, there’s not like some outstanding run [of success]. Everyone slides in there last minute and takes over the leaderboard,” Newton said. “There’s nobody I’m gunning for particularly, not yet. We might need a couple years to dig our way in there and figure out the secrets of everybody else.”

hat’s the word that springs to mind in describing the first moments of Susannah Berryman’s wondrous comic journey through the life changes of one Sharon, a 50-something divorcee long immured in Iowa City, if originally from Illinois: a distinction Sharon makes that flies by her new roommate Robyn, of the Bronx.

Mutt and Jeff, oil and water. At first, “The Roommate,” Jen Silverman’s genial and touching romp now playing at the Kitchen Theatre, seems headed in the welltrod direction of mismatched relationships—in this case of rural and urban, the good girl and the bad girl. Then it takes a sharp pin-turn, as the story becomes the story of one woman’s mid-age metamorphosis. The genre, while still rooted in realism, verges on whimsy, which has its

own rich national tradition (“Arsenic and Old Lace,” for instance.)

Robyn, curt and a bit dismissive, keeps dodging questions about her past until she seems, well, dodgy. Shady. And as straight-laced Sharon pushes her for the truth, we find out just what has driven her to seek the wide skies of Iowa to start over (she imagines raising sheep, and a cow.)

Beginning with a sharing a toke of her home-grown marijuana, Robyn, a somewhat reluctant Mephistopheles, begins her unintended seduction of Sharon.

In sum, Sharon begins to carry a crush on this bad girl. Everything has been about rules and roles defined by others in Sharon’s life: daughter to a controlling mother, wife to a dismissive husband, mother to a son who has fled to NYC to design women’s clothes.

So, flutter. Berryman leans forward on her toes, a nervous shy rabbit. She employs smiles, a flurry of random chatter. She hovers behind her counter, as Maureen Keiller’s Robyn strides onto the set, like some giant into a child’s garden.

With astute physical comedy, Berryman dances about, approach and retreat, yet always in some fascination, twirling her foot at one point in unconscious flirtation. A first taste of marijuana brings on a virtual ballet, as she slinks down the refrigerator, floating serenely to her kitchen chair, buoyant and finally released.

Sharon gains in bravado and Berryman swerves into each new escapade as Robyn begins to coach her. In turn Keiller performs a slower arc, of shedding layers of distrust. Yet something else dawns on Keiller’s face: not quite resignation, not defeat, but a recognition of a pattern, the past not so easy to elude.

An incredible sadness has crept into both of these women’s lives, not only of choices made or not made, but of the loss to distance, to time, to the inevitable growth of their children. Fantasies cannot last forever, and it brings a maturing sadness to Sharon’s frolic as Robyn is forced to make her own choices.

Frank J. Oliva provides a handsome, open-structure house with a square naturalistic kitchen space to play in (though it doesn’t attempt much in the way of character), lit sweetly by Sarah Gosses. Amanda Galdue provides apt costuming, having fun with Sharon’s increasing boldness, and Lesley Lisa Greene’s sound design keeps the play moving along. Jesse Haron provides a big assist with some important props.

Caitlin Lowans’ direction has a light, empathetic touch, adding a few flourishes of character and comedy in the quick scene transitions. She neatly finesses the abrupt shift in mood for a poignant ending.

Release, joy, a sense of new possibilities, dazzling acting of comedy and depth.

What more can one ask for in dreary February?

“I had been interviewed by a magazine based out of New York and connected to NYU called OFNOTE Magazine, where I was highlighted as one of ten female artists making work about gun violence in America,” she notes. “Their emphasis was focused [on violence] against women and during the interview process I learned this statistic that every 16 hours a women is shot and killed. Because I had already been working on gun violence, I figured I have to make something about this subject

ach of the handguns pops with bright color, painted against plywood. Some are placed beside wooden panels of vibrant colors exhibiting a constellation through golden dots. Below the guns, in small handwriting, phrases are penciled in cursive. “This gun was used to kill our child,” it says. Or, “This gun was used to kill her cousin.” The works are inviting from a distance, like a refreshing splash of light. But up close, their innocuousness fades. Through the words, the guns reveal that however visually appealing they may appear from afar, they are ultimately bound in violence masked as something pretty. They’re “terror,” as the show’s statement describes, “commingled with allure.”

Local artist and printmaker Kadie Salfi has been busy. A strong advocate against gun violence, she’s spent the past eight years focused on the subject, producing five distinct bodies of work exploring multiple categories of violence, from trophy hunting to mass shootings in schools.

She’s spoken at Cornell, exhibited at the Tompkins County Public Library, and distributed over 2,000 postcards of her gun imagery for individuals to disperse to their senators, mayors, the administration, and beyond. She’s organized to speak at Ithaca College in March, has work up at Corners Gallery now as part of the group show Transparent Memory, and will soon

take part as one of 100 female artists in Fahrenheit 213, a collective activist art show taking place in San Francisco this spring. Meanwhile, Salfi has accomplished another feat. Every 16 Hours, her most recent work, is a series of gun imagery on display now at A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn.

Up through March 10, it is her first solo exhibition in New York City.

as well.”

Painting handguns, the weapon most often utilized, Salfi chose to use makeup as her medium rather than traditional paints.

“I used blush and lipstick and eyeliner, nail polish and eye-shadow and lip gloss and painted the guns,” she says. “For me, the hope is that when people see and hear the title of the show—there are 16 guns in the show—and see the guns from a distance, they might actually think they’re very cool and beautiful and pop-y, because

in some cases they really are. And then I write in pencil, pretty small, ‘This gun was used to kill your mom,’ so it’s this contrast in perspective: from a distance this thing looks blingy and cool, and when you’re close up and intimate with it, you’re struck with the idea that this gun was used to kill a woman. I hope the viewer will think about this and have a discussion—not necessarily with me, but with someone they’re seeing it with or with themselves or with someone else—that will continue this dialogue that needs to happen in the United States.”

Salfi’s juxtaposition of guns with constellations also carries its own significance and artistic intent. “I used those constellations for a work I made in 2013 and 2014,” she explains. “One day I had one of those constellation pieces that I was making. I was moving some of the gun pieces around and I had one of the guns next to one of the constellations just randomly and I started looking at it and thinking, ‘Wow, those look like bullet holes.’ [...]

There are so many different cultures over time that have used the stars to tell stories to remember. So I thought this feels like a wonderful way, yet again, to honor this woman’s life. She’s been shot; now, there’s a constellation.”

Salfi said while the goal of the new display is to push an anti-gun violence message, it should also serve as a remembrance of the victims, in the same vein as previous work she has done about the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. Salfi’s goal in creating and exhibiting this work, therefore, is bound in a dual purpose of honoring victims and continuing to spread and reassert awareness of this ongoing issue of violence. “ “I will say,” she says, “that someone has pointed out, and I thought about this too, that in most cases I’m probably preaching to the choir.” But even so, she continues, “Even if I’m preaching to the choir, there’s still a lot of work the choir needs to do.”

Comedian talks “Tonight Show” inspiration

C

omedian Steven Wright returns to Ithaca for another show at the State Theatre on Feb. 9. Wright started doing comedy in the late 1970s, and due to an amazing twist of fate, found himself on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson in 1982. He’s been making audiences laugh with his alien deadpan take on the world ever since. Film buffs know him best as “K-Billy’s Super Sounds of the ‘70s Weekend’s” radio D.J. (“The station where the ‘70s survived”) in Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs” and the laconic guy on the couch in Dave Chappelle’s stoner classic “Half Baked.”

We began by talking about Wright’s friend, comedian and political activist Barry Crimmins, who died last year.

Steven Wright: Barry changed my life, really. He started the Deng Ho comedy club in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was from Upstate New York and he came to Boston. There was a music place, Springfield Street Saloon, and they became part of a Chinese restaurant, and he talked them into doing comedy there, and so it was half-Chinese restaurant, half-comedy

club. And he became one of my best friends right from the beginning. That was like 1979 or ’80. And he ran the club and he was an amazing comedian. And then someone wrote an article about this weird Chinese restaurant-comedy club, and then the article went into the L.A. Times and then the guy from “The Tonight Show,” Peter Lassally, saw the article. Then when he went to Massachusetts the summer of ‘82 to look at schools for his kids, he came into the club, and he watched the comedians and he saw me, and I ended up going on “The Tonight Show.” So, really, if you trace it all back, it’s because of Barry starting that comedy club. [It] affected my whole life. And many other people’s lives, too.

IT: Which came first, “The Tonight Show” or “The HBO Young Comedians All-Star Reunion?”

SW: First “Tonight Show” was in August ’82, and then the HBO was at the end of ’85.

and minimalist. Who did you like when you were a kid?

SW: You know, I wanted to be a comedian from watching “The Tonight Show” stuff. And there was another club in Boston before the Deng Ho. So, I went to the open mic to watch, and then I thought, I’m gonna come back in two weeks and try to do it. So I had to write stuff. I never wrote jokes at all, ever. So I had to write stuff to go to the open mic night. And I loved Woody Allen’s comedy albums, and I loved Kurt Vonnegut, and I loved Monty Python, too. I went to Middlesex Community College in 1975, and a friend of mine went to Cambridge, Harvard Square, and he saw their movie “And Now For Something Completely Different,” which was even before their main movies, and he said, “You gotta go see this movie.” So, I was into weird, odd things. Anyway, when I wrote the jokes, they just came out—abstract, little, couple sentence jokes. That’s just how they came out. I learned how to write jokes from listening to Woody Allen’s albums. He had stories, long stories, but within the stories, he would tell jokes.

IT: Like the story about the moose.

SW: Yeah, and there were jokes inside of the stories. But I didn’t tell stories. That’s just how I did it.
