What In the World Is a PUD Zone ?

C

ommon Council will decide at its March 2 meeting whether it wants to take stronger control of development on Ithaca’s waterfront over the next year and a half by granting temporary “planned unit development” (PUD) status to the area.

A PUD zone is a “floating overlay” zone that, under a city law passed in 2014, allows for more flexibility and oversight in zoning—and for the council to get final say over new development in a particular place.

The waterfront area in question is currently zoned for industrial use. It stretches from around Third Street in the north (the road to the farmers’ market) to include Inlet Island and much of the Cherry Street industrial area, with all of it lying west of Route 13.

According to a memo from city planner Jennifer Kusznir, the PUD “is intended to allow the Common Council a reasonable period of time in which to establish a plan for the waterfront study area,” in keeping with the new comprehensive plan adopted in September 2015. The PUD, if approved, would last up to 18 months, or until more permanent guidelines are drawn up as part of Plan Ithaca’s second phase, which will eventually include detailed plans for each city neighborhood.

Under the PUD, Common Council is directed to allow for “additional uses” if a new project increases “health and welfare of the community” and creates a “long-term community benefit.”

On the waterfront, Kusznir wrote, the city’s goals are to emphasize waterfront activities and promote “public access to the waterfront”; reduce the impacts of parking; add jobs; and protect any environmentally sensitive areas.

Plan Ithaca’s stated goals for the waterfront follows the current conventional wisdom of urban planning, an area of mixed-use development, combining commercial uses, retail, and housing.

The most obvious and immediate proposed project that would fall under this zoning is the Maguire family’s plan for a new Ford, Lincoln, and Nissan dealership in the Carpenter Business Park.

The new bridge connecting Taughannock Boulevard to Taber Street would be expected to reduce much of the traffic from the intersection by Pete’s grocery. It is drawn up at 34 feet wide, with 5-foot sidewalks. Plans were presented on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at city hall to replace the Brindley Street bridge. he Tompkins County District Attorney’s office chose not to present any witnesses at a preliminary felony hearing Feb. 9 for the sexual assault case against Cornell student Wolfgang Ballinger, 21. Since the DA’s office presented no evidence, Ballinger was released on his own recognizance, but Gwen Wilkinson, Tompkins County District Attorney, said this is “not a reflection of [the district attorney’s office’s] enthusiasm for prosecuting this case.”

Wilkinson said that as far as she is aware there are no conditions to Ballinger’s release. “He has to come back to court whatever day he’s told to. His lawyer is the person that we serve with any notice. That’s probably about it,” she said, adding that she does not believe the fraternity president is a flight risk.

“Sometimes choosing not to present evidence at a preliminary hearing is a strategy,” she said. “Sometimes it’s a position based on the victim’s situation.

There are many reasons you can choose not to present evidence, and it does not stop the case from going forward one bit. It won’t even slow it down.”

Ballinger, a Cornell University fraternity president, first turned himself over to Cornell police investigators Feb. 4 because of an incident that allegedly took place four days earlier in his bedroom at his fraternity house, located at 2 Forest Park Lane in Ithaca. According to Ithaca City Court employees, he was charged with three first-degree felonies: criminal sex act, attempted rape, and sexual abuse.

According to court documents, Ballinger allegedly committed sex acts against the alleged victim after she stated, “I’m too intoxicated,” and “I’m not interested.” The alleged victim also reported that Ballinger shut and locked his door, pushed her against the door, and twice tried to forcefully have sex with her.

Wilkinson said the DA’s office is committed to “aggressively pursuing” sexual assault “to the full extent that the evidence will take us.”

“It’s everywhere, and it is something that we take very seriously,” she said, though they’re by far some of the most difficult cases to try. “The victims are often traumatized and would rather not have their colleagues and friends know what happened out of fear of being stigmatized,” she said. “Criminal juries are still not very friendly to sexual assault victims; frequently the victim is still on trial.”

She added that unless there are witnesses, DNA, blood, or some other “tiebreaker,” “something that corroborates one side over the other,” they’re often difficult cases for juries to sort out. “I hate

He was arraigned Friday, Feb. 5, and remanded to the Tompkins County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.

As of the following Monday he was still in jail, court employees said.

At the hearing Feb. 9, about 30 people, most of them young adults, many of them young men in suits and ties, sat tensely as they waited for the proceedings to begin.

Ballinger waived his right to appear to in court, and the entire hearing took less than five minutes. Deputy District Attorney Wendy Franklin stated that the DA’s office would be taking the case to a grand jury.

Wilkinson said all felonies in New York State are required to go in front of a grand jury before moving on to a criminal trial.

It will likely be up to six months before the case is ready to move forward, she added, explaining that the grand jury trial will not decide Ballinger’s guilt or innocence but will make a finding on whether or not there’s enough evidence for the case to go to the county court on a trial track.

The school confirmed that Ballinger is a Cornell student but could not confirm his standing. In wake of the incident, Cornell University President Elizabeth Garrett said in a statement: “I am deeply disturbed by the allegations of sexual assault involving brindleybridge contin u ed from page 3

rather than a sort of backwater that tends to draw in illicit uses,” Alderperson Cynthia Brock (D-1st) said at the night meeting.

Greg Perreault, who has worked at Vector Magnetics on Cherry Street since 1989, suggested a new left turn lane on Taughannock Boulevard at State Street to relieve congestion there that backs up into the intersection of Taughannock and Seneca. Perreault also suggested that the city consider painting lines on Cherry Street, since “people going to Wegman’s seem to think they have the right of way” when turning onto Cecil A. Malone Drive.

Campus sexual assault has been at the forefront of the news lately, with Governor Andrew Cuomo signing his “Enough is Enough” legislation in July of last year to combat sexual assault on college and university campuses statewide.

The new law requires all colleges to adopt a set of comprehensive procedures and guidelines, including a uniform definition of affirmative consent, a statewide amnesty policy, and expanded access to law enforcement to ensure the safety of all students attending colleges in New York State.

Following the incident, the Cornell chapter of his fraternity Psi Upsilon was suspended. “When we were notified of these allegations on Monday, February 1, Psi Upsilon was immediately placed on interim suspension pending the conclusion of a full investigation,” Garrett said.

“Although I applaud the swift actions of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) to mandate additional training for its members, we will be considering what additional steps should be taken to ensure the Greek community at Cornell is living up to our institutional standard of excellence and respect for others.”

Psi Upsilon released a statement saying fraternity staff members will be traveling to Ithaca to assist in the matter.

“Sexual assault, and any form of sexual harassment, is against our policy and in opposition of the values of Psi Upsilon,” said Executive Director Thomas Fox. “Our chapter is cooperating with Cornell’s investigation into this matter and any members involved will be held accountable.

The Chi Chapter at Cornell has a distinguished history with the University and we are committed to continuing to be a benefit to Cornell and the Ithaca Community.”

Encouraging People of Color to Farm

T

he Groundswell Center for Local Food & Farming is going through the first leadership change in its history this month, with the retirement of founding director Joanna Green. Elizabeth Gabriel, who operates Wellspring Forest Farm with her husband Steve in Mecklenburg and was the founding director of Common Good City Farm in Washington, D.C., will replace Green as executive director of Groundswell, which focuses on educating potential farmers in sustainable agriculture practices.

After Green took an early retirement from Cornell Cooperative Extension in 2008, where she worked with the farming alternatives program, she put in lots of unpaid time to help launch Groundswell. The center started offering classes in 2010 after receiving funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) beginner rancher and farmer development program. Groundswell, which is part of Cornell’s Center for Transformative Action, now offers numerous courses on everything from pasture management to marketing, and has an incubator farm where aspiring farmers without land can get a start.

The Ithaca Times sat down with Green to talk about her work with Groundswell.

Ithaca Times: How did Groundswell come about?

Joanna Green: It grew out of EcoVillage, where I used to live. We had always done a lot of sustainability education—West Haven is a beautiful farm, a really well run organic CSA, and they did a lot of great educational work. There was more demand than they could fulfill and still farm, so we started about making a non-profit institute for sustainable agriculture. The farmers weren’t going to build a non-profit, and EcoVillage had its own education agenda.

In 2008, EcoVillage held a fundraising dinner and raised a few thousand dollars, and in 2010 we started programming.

IT: In your view, what’s been the overall mission of the Groundswell Center since it began?

JG: Increasing diversity in agriculture.

And one of the challenges is we are a predominantly white region. There’s a

matter of expectations on both sides: people in the agriculture world aren’t used to thinking about [diversity] or might not realize there’s interest from people of color in farming. In communities of color, in some cases, there’s a stigma attached, especially with African-Americans, where their historical role in agriculture is one of being exploited.

There is a growing movement to farming. It’s an honorable occupation that has a lot to do with sovereignty today.

People don’t want to be dependent on a food system that’s poisoning them. If you’re not involved in producing food, you’re subject to a system that’s just feeding you junk and contributing to massive health problems.

IT: How do you go about increasing interest in

farming from a diverse group of people, then?

JG: The challenge of those of us who are white and in institutions primarily led by white people is how do you actually do the work that engages and eventually turns power and resources over to people of color. The most basic thing is building relationships. In working for 20-some years in Cornell in agriculture, almost all of my colleagues and farmers—the whole world—was white. If we take on the mission of changing the face of agriculture and don’t have personal relationships, we can’t get very far. The organization has to build credibility and trust based on personal relationships. All the setbacks

are learning opportunities for us. Coming to understand power we have as white individuals, the learning curve is painful sometimes.

IT: What places in life are those taking classes at Groundswell coming from?

JG: We’ve had anyone from their late teens and early 20s from any number of places, some really impoverished and some affluent college graduates. At the other end of the spectrum there are people in their 50s or 60s wanting to do something totally different in retirement or as a second career. We have a lot of midcareer people thinking, ‘I can’t keep doing what I’m doing.’ At least one couple with adult children who have started farming in T-burg moved to the Finger Lakes from Tennessee to do this. It’s people who want to farm but need to learn.

IT: And what do the prospective farmers who come through your doors learn?

JG: One of our most intensive courses is farm business planning, which we give every winter. There are 80 or 100 people who have taken it, and a substantial portion of them go into business. A lot of them come into this endeavor with little financial management skills, so we provide a much greater chance of succeeding by giving a realistic picture of what they’re up against.

For the same reason farming is super challenging, it’s super rewarding with those for which it’s a good fit.

It’s a small segment of the population who’s really cut out to succeed in farming. It’s not a failure on anybody’s part or on Groundswell’s part to expose people to farming and our programs and they decide it’s not for them. And we have people who say what I really want to do is homestead, have a big garden, a little bit of livestock, but I’m not going to try and make a business of it.

IT: How have you seen support for sustainable agriculture education change over the years?

JG: The demand’s been increasing over the past 10 or 20 years. The USDA has supported development of all these different variations in farmer education nationwide. We have to reinvent a training system that fell apart over the last 60 or 70 years. It used to be farmers grew up on farms, and there was a natural organic learning process they went through. Then the [agricultural] colleges started taking on a lot of that—but all the practical how-to-farm stuff was gutted. It became all biotech, aimed at the large industrial model of farming.

The project, which would be scheduled for this year, would consist of relocating Maguire’s Ford, Lincoln, and Nissan store from its current 504 S. Meadow St. location to a new 50,000-square-foot facility in the Carpenter Business Park (near the Community Garden and Farmers’ Market along the Waterfront Trail).

This might have happened recently.

We now join Svante and JoAnn, a pair of prospective customers, who have been waiting for several minutes in a spare salesman’s cubicle. A complimentary smoothie sits in front of each of them, untouched.

JoAnn is clutching her purse tightly. “I don’t know about this, Svante,” she whispers.

“On the phone I said we just wanted to look around.”

Just then, the door swings open and in strides the cubicle’s owner—a little too tan, teeth a little too white, and not a hair out of place. “Larson E. Whipsnade, folks,” he exclaims during vigorous handshakes.

“I understand you want to develop your waterfront!” He sits down opposite Svante and JoAnn at the desk and looks at each of them, smiling.

“Well … it’s all very preliminary, of course …” says Svante.

Whipsnade leans forward and raps his knuckle on the desk. “You people are in luck! Oh my gosh, this is fate or something.

It’s absolutely perfect! All right,” he says, clapping his hands. “I want you both to forget everything you think you know about car dealerships!”

“Oh, my,” JoAnn interjects. “I don’t

think that’s what we had in mind at all.”

“My friend, I completely understand,” Whipsnade soothes. “But I have a sixth sense about people, and I can tell you are folks who understand a bargain. This is a deal literally too sweet to pass up.” He opens a drawer in his desk and pulls out a drawing. “Here’s the site plan.”

“You have a site plan all ready?” asks Svante.

“Hear me out,” says Whipsnade, standing up. He spreads his arms. “We’re talking rooftop gardens, solar panels, landscaping!” Out of the corner of his eye he sees that he has their attention. “An observation deck! Hardwood trees in the car lot! Shrubs!”

“I don’t know,” says JoAnn. “I worry about a big parking lot so close to our waterfront. What about all the rainwater runoff?”

“Confidentially, you and I are on the same page, JoAnn,” says Whipsnade. “But I’m going to have to ask my manager if I can get you a deal on the rainwater harvesting.

It’s an aftermarket add-on. I’ll be right back.”

Poor Parking Meter Planning

When the parking meters disappeared in many places downtown and people were complaining, I thought others were rallying against the technology and were simply resistant to change. I live downtown and walk most places. So, the big change in parking did not really affect me.

In the past few months, already in my car, I attempted to make “quick stops” at the library and the Dewitt Mall—regular things I did in the past. The parking on Cayuga Street, next to the library is a horrible decrease in service. As a mother who regularly gets my stack of library books for our family, I found it not only a major inconvenience but simply put: not a smart design. The placement of the parking 6

payment is not as one moves towards the commons or the library (basically the destinations that you want folks to visit), but instead, the parking is away from those things, across from the hotel. Basically, you have to go backwards before you can go forwards. See how this quick stop becomes far more involved?

I really have to question who decided on the placement of these payment zones.

Was there even thought given to the people actually using them? Clearly there was little thought given to a person with a disability, limited physicality, an elderly person or a person traveling with a stack of library books and kids in tow. I see the same issue continued on page 7

near the Dewitt Mall.

Why would someone choose to place the payment zones in the opposite direction from where you want people to flow? Businesses at the Dewitt Mall, great businesses, which make our city interesting and unique, have really suffered due to this change in parking.

How is it a smart and helpful design to make folks travel in the opposite direction from where they intend to go? Again, not to mention how discouraging it may be to folks with limited physicality, a family and, or a limited amount of time.

With the reconstruction of the Commons, great effort and emphasis was placed on bringing even more people to shop and eat downtown. Greater planning and research needs to happen when offering parking to all these great places. So many more people now avoid downtown due to the parking.

Meadow Street seems to be getting bigger and bigger, with the box stores and chain restaurants and parking a plenty. What do we want our sweet city to become? More of this: Anywhere, USA? Is it possible to move the locations of the parking payment zones to make them more efficient?

Agassiz, and Barbara McClintock; chemist Linus Pauling; physicist Robert Bacher (a member of the Manhattan Project); geologist Hollis Hedberg; and economist James Laughlin (founder of the Federal Reserve System). These people came and went from Ithaca as if it wasn’t isolated at all.

During and after the war ties with the federal government grew and remained strong. By 1953 William Myers, the dean of the agriculture school was touring Asia with John D. Rockefeller III, setting up new ag programs abroad and bringing back promising students for stateside training.

Vladimir Nabokov arrived in Ithaca in 1948 and began riding the bus to campus, taking notes on the behavior of the teenage girls. He taught at Cornell until 1959, a year after Lolita was published in the United States. Its success allowed him to move to Montreux, Switzerland, in its way more removed than Ithaca.

The old joke about Ithaca being “centrally isolated” remained true for the residents of the city long after East Hill became elaborately connected to the rest of the world. Our resident food critic Peggy Haine, who arrived in town as a Cornell student in the earliest 1960s, found nothing here that resembled fine dining. Suitably appalled, she moved back to New York City to be a folk musician for a few years, and then returned to find things looking up. It wasn’t, however, until the 1970s that more cosmopolitan

culinary offerings began to appear in Tiny Town in the form of Etienne Merle’s L’Auberge, which opened in 1971. On the more countercultural side, Moosewood Restaurant, Cabbagetown Café, the Greenstar Cooperative, and the Somadhara Bakery all began between 1971 and 1973, forming the nucleus of a hippie community that would give Ithaca its reputation for decades. (Most of the actual communes were outside the city.)

Two weekly tabloids (they weren’t called alt-weeklies yet), the Ithaca New Times and the Good Times Gazette began publication in 1972 and 1973, respectively.

The New Times focused on news, not just local events, but the state and national scene as well, taking a distinctly more antiestablishment position than the venerable Gannett daily in town. The Gazette was an entertainment paper, and it didn’t limit itself to local arts. Ithaca was very much paying attention to the rest of the world, but at the same time seemed to feel itself to be at a safe remove.

We have, it seems, something of a paradox. Many people have been attracted to the counterculture and the cosmopolitan nature of Ithaca, which are both manifestations of the growing influence of the outside world. Now some of them are disturbed (or worse) that they will not be allowed to keep all this for themselves. They dislike the new changes, and yet they have already changed Ithaca. The Baby Boomers built the counterculture. The Gen-Xers gentrified Fall Creek. The Millennials are gentrifying Southside. Now planners and developers want downtown to be an actual city and the waterfront to be Marina del Rey (but with terrible weather).

Whipsnade waits as the couple looks at each other uncertainly. “OK,” he says.

“I’m going to write two numbers on this piece of paper. The top one’s the new jobs created, and the bottom one’s annual property tax revenue.” He folds the paper and slides it across the desk. “Are those numbers you can live with?”

“Well,” JoAnn says, “of course it’s up to the Common Council and the planning board, but I don’t think we’re going to say ‘no’ right now!”

A Good Read

Family Reading Partnership: nationwide with Head Start

ast October the Library of Congress gave the Family Reading Partnership (FRP) one of its Literacy Awards for “Creating a Community of Literacy.” The two other winners in that category were the Little Free Library—they build and stock freestanding book exchanges—and Literacy Alberni Society—they teach reading in a Vancouver Island valley where 42 percent of the population is functionally illiterate.

In early December at the 2015 Parent and Family Engagement Conference in San Diego, co-interim director of the FRP Elizabeth Stilwell was giving a presentation and caught the attention of Head Start, the sponsor of the event. Stilwell was describing At Home With Books, for which she had written the text.

Her co-interim director Katrina Morse had illustrated it. It is for both parents and children. The picture book approach is geared for toddlers, but the text is written in the first person of a child addressing a parent, and they are describing why, where, and how they like to be read to.

What if, mused Head Start representatives and FRP staff, we gave this book to all the participants who attended this national conference and we created a challenge this coming March— National Read-Aloud Month—to get more people to read to children?

The collaboration, which begins in fall 2016, may lead as many as a million children seeing a copy of At Home With Books after it is distributed through Head Start’s national network.

Locally, the FRP puts 10,000 used books in their Bright Red Bookshelves annually and through their other programs they give away 15,000 new books each year. Many of these books are given away at the hospital; every baby born in Tompkins County receives a book from the FRP. The FRP has six staff members (which add up to 4.5 full-time equivalent positions) and hundreds of volunteers to run 12 programs, entirely funded by grants and donations.

The “partnership” part of their name is important. The books are given away, but the cost of printing them is borne by local organizations (forprofit and nonElizabeth Stilwell profit) or in some cases individuals who step forward.

Because they are ordered in volume, the FRP receives a deeply discounted price, up to 60 percent.

The local Head Start office has always been part of the FRP’s book giveaway effort; they hand them out on their home visits.

The mission of the FRP is very focused: they want children between birth and age 5 to be read to and to read.

“We challenge families to make reading aloud a part of their everyday life,” said Liz Kinast, the development and public relations coordinator. Catching the wave of superheroes sweeping the media, the FRP has released a new book called Books Are My Superpower, again illustrated with Morse’s bears from At Home With Books. The latter book has just been issued in a bilingual edition with the Spanish provided by Juan Brache. Brache, who is from the Dominican Republic, produced a balanced translation by working with colleagues from Mexico and Puerto Rico.

“We wanted it to be bilingual, not just Spanish,” said Stilwell, “so Englishspeaking readers can see the Spanish on the page.”

“This initiative [with Head Start] brings us back to our roots,” Stilwell said, “which was urging people to read aloud at home so that their children would be successful in school.” Pediatricians, she said, say that the acquisition of language begins at birth (some would even say before). To fully communicate a person needs at least 5,000 words. When you read to a child, they will hear words that are not ordinarily heard in speech. Furthermore,

continued Stilwell, reading aloud is a social act and an emotional one. Stories heard on television do not have the social and emotional impact of one person reading to another.

“Interaction is important to children,” said Kinast.

“Children need both access to and ownership of books,” said Stilwell. “And the books that are included in our programs are carefully chosen.”

The FRP hands out a card that includes “10 great reasons to read aloud to children.”

The FRP staff looks for books that are appropriate for particular developmental stages, books that feature children from many different ethnicities, and books that are bilingual.

“At age 4 children become problem solvers,” said Stilwell. “So you need a conflict and resolution. Two-year-old boys love construction and noise.” You don’t give a baby a book with paper pages because they chew on them.

Morse, not surprisingly, pays attention to the quality of the illustrations.

“We field test books to get input,”

Stilwell said. “We ask pre-school teachers about their four-year-olds.

Stilwell believes that the sharp and particular focus of the FRP mission helped them win the Library of Congress award in the fall.

“There were programs from all over the world being considered,” she said. “Traveling to the award ceremony opened up networking opportunities.

An organization called World Book was putting e-readers in kiosks around India, which allowed people to download books [to their phones], but they weren’t doing family engagement. They focused on getting books to readers. In many countries to read aloud is not a tradition.

Eight people from that group became the core of what would become the FRP. By fall 1997 Hubberman had 25 people interested in her project. They were working in pre-K education, at Head Start, and at the library.

“I went to Joanne Florino at the Park Foundation,” said Hubberman. “She decided to make the investment and that was really the beginning.”

The Park Foundation “fueled the engine” while Hubberman and her colleagues built the initial partnerships.

“There was no model for this,” Hubberman said of the FRP. “It was just a compelling vision that I could see out there, and it was also great to get ideas from others.”

The FRP model has since been copied and launched in the Owego-Appalachin area, Cortland County, Chemung Valley, and Geneva.

Back to the Roots

Brigid Hubberman was the founding director of the FRP from 1997 until last year, when she left to pursue other projects.

“Brigid wanted to move reading into daily life,” said Stilwell. “We’ve continued to hold to that mission. That sets us apart.”

Hubberman, who grew up in Trumansburg and lives in Ithaca, feels that reading to children is “the most important social action cause of our time.” She started the FRP in 1997 after raising her four children.

She could see that remedial efforts in schools to improve reading were missing the root of the problem. “It is in the family where language develops,” she said. “It’s how many words you hear. It is about the culture of family life.”

What It’s All About

“With children’s books,” said Stilwell, “it’s about reading the pictures not the words. It’s not about the words, it’s about the experience.”

This is perhaps the most striking thing about the FRP: they don’t invoke any technology or any complicated special routines that involve special equipment.

They are all about reading to children from books.

“Not all adults have had a good experience with books,” said Kinast. “If they have negative memories, then we try to change that.

Their “Every Baby! Every Day! Talk. Sing. Read. Play.” campaign puts responsibility squarely with parents and caregivers rather than schools.

“We tell people that they have what it takes to do this,” said Kinast.

“It’s all about talking to babies,” said Stilwell. “Families at home with books.

That’s what it’s all about.”

Reading to a child, Stilwell said, teaches them the power of friendship, kindness, and determination. When you read to them, children talk back to you, and unlike a computer screen, you talk back to them.

The book becomes a starting point for playing games and for simply having a dialog, for letting children start to tell you a story.

Hubberman said that it difficult to measure the effects of the FRP programming quantitatively. One way it has been attempted is to issue library cards for babies. It serves a carrot to encourage a family to visit the library. You can measure how many of the cards have been activated and then count how often books are taken out of the library using the card.

The FRP founder believes it most important to focus on what children and their families need. “We need to join together to achieve this,” she said. “It is about collaboration over competition.” •

Schumer Promises Ithaca Road Money

S

enator Charles Schumer visited Ithaca on Presidents’ Day to announce that federal highway money might be coming Ithaca’s way to help put in some of the recommendations made in a “road safety audit” for a portion of Route 79 around the tuning fork where State and Green streets and Seneca Way come together.

Schumer requested the study in February 2015, a response to a truck crashing into Simeon’s restaurant in June 2014. There is $40 million in the most recent federal transportation bill for New York State, some of which Schumer said “could help get some of these projects off the ground, so we can continue working to make Ithaca’s streets safer.”

The road safety audit “took a holistic approach,” it says, to “review all aspects” of motorized and non-motorized traffic alike in the area.

State Department of Transportation data for crashes from October 2011 through September 2014 were analyzed, with 91 occurring during the study period and those involving commercial trucks specifically highlighted. Eight issues were identified in the study, with their relative risk factor for accidents weighed—lighting issues are considered a low risk—to the higher risk “driver behavior and lack of driver attention with respect to length/ grade of hill issues” and “geometric issues,” including that large trucks must use extra space when turning between East State and North Aurora streets.

The study offers a number of suggestions, some of which have been floated in the past as ideas to improve traffic flow and safety in the problematic area. One is making Aurora Street a twoway between State and Seneca, and close a block of State Street to westbound traffic, diverting it all onto Seneca. Another idea is installing a roundabout at the end of the tuning fork.

“We’ve made changes since the collision at Simeon’s, including better signage and brake test stops on 79 before trucks enter Ithaca,” Mayor Svante Myrick wrote in a Facebook post on Monday, Feb. 15. “We’ll be applying for funding to study redesigning the traffic flow near and through the tuning fork and the Senator is supporting our application.”

Cornell student leads local ACEing Autism chapter: teaching tennis to children with autism

A

lexandra Saint Laurent, a senior in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell, did not have any prior experience with autism in particular or special needs children in general when she got involved in ACEing Autism. The program puts kids between the ages of 3 and 16 on the tennis court to teach them about team building and to improve their fine motor skills. When she was a junior, Saint Laurent decided she “wanted a new experience before graduating.” As it happens, she is a soccer player and does not play tennis.

Medication is not what is needed; social intervention is better.” Beyond social skills building and motor coordination improvement, ACEing Autism is, according to Saint Laurent, about removing the stigma attached to the disorder. “It’s important for kids who are ‘off spectrum’ too,” she said. She will be going before the Special Needs PTA (SEPTA) in March to lobby for integrating the program into the public schools. “I don’t want this to be a ‘Cornell thing,’” she said. “I want it to continue in the community.”

When Saint Laurent joined ACEing Autism, the sessions were biweekly (six times per semester). They are now weekly.

“I was trying to get a lower-functioning little girl to feel some comfort,” she said.

“But when we met two weeks later, she’d forgotten who I was. I decided to add one extra session, and I immediately saw progress, so I made the decision for this semester to meet once a week.” The current semester began in late January; it is too early to measure progress resulting from the new schedule. made up. You stand at four corners of the court and roll a giant beach ball to someone else. They stop it and roll it on. The older children get to rally with a volunteer or practice some of their favorite skill, or, for example, children who hate to use their backhand are allowed to only hit forehand returns for the rest of the session.

“One boy was there with this brother, who was a volunteer” said Saint Laurent.

“He didn’t want to be on the court, but we wanted to get him interested.” It took a few weeks. “In the end he got so enthralled that he didn’t want to leave.” He returned for the next semester.

The little girl described above who caused Saint Laurent to go to weekly sessions, had started out crying at every session. By the end of the semester she

How, indeed, does one measure progress with this program? Saint Laurent has a “goals chart” for each participant. She gets together with all the children before each session and lays out three goals and one reward. The first goal is to introduce yourself to a new volunteer, including making eye contact. The second and third goals are the same: learn a new skill, like hold your racquet steady or hit the ball to the serving line. The younger children are rewarded with a game of duck-duck-goose or “racquet roll,” a game Saint Laurent

was smiling and was able to sit still long enough to have her photograph taken. She eventually asked if she could have some tennis clothes. She too would return.

What are the challenges of teaching young people with ASD? Saint Laurent said that her first goal is to get to know each child and identify specific interests in each one of them. “The spectrum is wide,” she said, “so it’s important to have face-to-face conversations with them before each session.” In fall 2014, her first semester, many of the children were high functioning. In spring 2015 they included the full spectrum, which taught her much about the variability in the symptoms of the disorder.

functioning,” said Saint Laurent. “With the lower-functioning group we worked mostly on social skills with some tennis.

For the higher-functioning kids there were structured lessons.”

One teenager who was formally diagnosed as “on the spectrum” was on the high school tennis team. Saint Laurent put him to work teaching the other kids how to play tennis. Unlike the teenage tennis player, most of her participants arrive with little muscle mass development and have a difficult time focusing.

Consequently, in the beginning they cannot swing a racquet well and tend to hit the ball all over the place rather than back over the net.

Children with ASD also often Allie Saint Laurent have difficulty socializing, so Saint Laurent encourages interaction in such a way as to build up their confidence. “A lot of them are very meek when they first arrive,” she said. “We teach them to speak up for themselves.”

At this point Saint Laurent wants to continue the program, but change it in a couple of ways. First, she would like to recruit more parents and siblings to participate, and second, she is applying to enter a master’s program at the College of Human Ecology in order to formally measure the progress she sees in her tennis players.

“No one at Cornell specializes in autism,” she said, “but there is someone who works on childhood cognition and others who work more generally in childhood development. Plus, there is an autism research center at Ithaca College.”

During her involvement with ACEing Autism, Saint Laurent has been a full-time undergraduate student. She said that most of the time commitment to the program comes before the season begins, which she described as a “whirlwind.”

“I have to drum up volunteers at Cornell and IC and in the community,” she said. “Lee [Kaltman] brings me around to the public schools for meetings.” Then she settles down with each child—this semester she has three lower- and four higherfunctioning players—and sets a goal for each one of them.

After that, she said, she just spends that hour each week on the courts. “Except for the last week,” Saint Laurent said, “when it takes an hour and a half because we have a pizza party and an awards ceremony.” § ACEing Autism lessons cost $60 per semester, but there is a sliding scale. Saint Laurent does not turn anyone away. Funding is available from the Ithaca Youth Bureau.

The court time is donated by Cornell and the balls by Penn. There is no distance limitation; participants come from as far away as Syracuse and Binghamton.

he New York State Special Olympic Winter Games are slated for the weekend of Feb. 20 in Poughkeepsie.

The following athletes from Tompkins County will be participating in Alpine skiing: Jim Aneshansley (Ithaca), Johanna Baker (Lansing), Emma Dodici (Dryden), Tim Hertel (Ithaca), Emily Mahr (Ithaca), plus Jacob Maxwell and Daryl Jennings from Cortland.

The rest of the participating athletes will be competing in snowshoeing: Bill Corwin (Ithaca), Anne Ellsworth (Ithaca), Tae Hemsath (Ithaca), Kinsey Henry (Groton), Jeff Krizek (Ithaca), Jimmie Lehto (Ithaca), Luke Schickel (Dryden), Jim Severino (Ithaca), and Cassie Taber (Ithaca).

involved as special Olympic coaches to help support their son, Jeff, one of the athletes headed to Poughkeepsie.

Dick explained the landscape of Special Olympics in Tompkins County: 15 different sports, more than 200 athletes, and athletes and sports will shift based on the time of season. Unlike the conventional Olympics, which meet once every four years in the summer, and once every four years in the winter, Special Olympics convene continually.

“They’re on all the time,” said Krizek.

“That’s a big misconception by the public that we need to get straight: the Special Olympics occur all year round. It just depends on the season what sports are going on.”

Of the athletes currently competing in Special Olympics in Tompkins County, Krizek said there’s a range in ages (11 to 58, at present) as well as disabilities: “We have autism, Down syndrome; our athletes

deal with all different kinds of disabilities,” he said.

“Teaching these athletes takes more time,” Krizek continued. “Especially with something like skiing; it can really take a long time. Skiing is a hard sport to learn for someone without disabilities, so you can only imagine. Sometimes it takes years to get them to properly ski. With that said, you’ll still see some really strong skiers. … A few years ago, one of our skiers even made it to the International Special

“This group of skiers have been working a long time with each other,” he said. “It’s a lot of the same faces throughout the years, and it’s become a close bunch. There’s a family feel to it.

Everybody knows everybody and helps each other out. It’s definitely one of the nice aspects of this program, the social dynamic that comes with it.”

As for this winter’s competition, Krizek said his 16 athletes are ready bring their talents to Poughkeepsie.

“We are only allowed to take so many athletes,” he said. “The state only has so many allocations. They have more than 55,000 athletes in the whole state. … [But our athletes] all have a chance to come away with gold medals. We’ll see what happens. We’re excited.”

The number one goal,” Krizek continued, “is participating in the competition and having a good time while doing it. My favorite part is watching them do what they love and do well doing it.” §

A wedding at a vineyard: wine lovers return to a beloved site for their vows

F

inger Lakes wineries are popular destinations for wedding parties.

According to Jen Cupp, the events coordinator at Thirsty Owl Wine Company on Cayuga Lake, sometimes the couple picks their favorite winery, sometimes they may have met while they were living in the region, and sometimes they just remember how great the view was at a particular winery.

We asked three wineries on Seneca and Cayuga lakes about their readiness to host a wedding and a reception. Belhurst Castle and Estate Winery in Geneva on the west side of Seneca Lake is able to host the largest parties and has the most complete array of services at the disposal of a bride. Damiani Wine Cellars on the east side of Seneca Lake is able to host small parties, and with sufficient notice can help with making connections to local vendors. Thirsty Owl thinks of themselves as a “winery first” and is happy to provide a venue, food, and wine.

Carmen Brennan has been the events manager at Belhurst Castle (belhurst. com) since 1988, when only the castle was open for weddings. The venue began

to host weddings in the early 1980s and in 2004 built a new addition that includes ballrooms that will accommodate up to 250 people at a sit-down dinner. They are able to have two event on the same day, making sure to begin them at least two hours apart.

Brennan said that people usually contact her nine months to a year and a half before the occasion. “Sooner is better for prime dates,” she said. “Prime” used to mean July and August, but more recently the autumn months, particularly September and October have become popular.

Brennan said “it’s wine country and the harvest is in the fall and, of course, there’s the fall foliage.” In addition, new wines are often released during the autumn.

Edgar’s is Belhurst’s restaurant and can host smaller wedding parties. Stonecutter’s is their pub. Belhurst Castle serves as the caterer for all weddings on the premises. Their own wines are available, as are other New York State vintages, but Brennan said, “I’ll tell people at the get-go, that I can get them anything they want.”

Brennan, however, works with a bride to get not only the champagne she wants, but also a disk jockey or a band, an officiant, a florist, and any other service that is needed.

The castle has a dock that is large enough to accommodate tour boats, so a cruise on the lake can be incorporated

into the wedding weekend. Brennan said that her staff is on hand to guide people around the premises, especially if the cocktail portion of the reception is out in the gardens and the dinner will be in the ballroom. She said that limousines are sometimes used for both wine tours and then for transportation of guests to and from the wedding.

The Belhurst events manager estimated that roughly 80 percent of brides and grooms came from out-of-state, often from the Midwest, but also from as far away as California and Alaska. Some are former Hobart & William Smith students, and some from Ithaca area colleges, but word-of-mouth among friends also helps people find the Geneva venue.

Sterling WeddingMichael Suit Cimino, the tasting room manager at Damiani Wine Cellars (damiy and Black aniwinecellars.com) in Hector, is also the liaison to people planning events at the winery.

“We just had the lower level remodeled two years ago,” he said. “It incldues an events space with a bar, a stage, and tables and chairs.” The banquet tables at Damiani can accommodate up to 50 people, Cimino said, but the venue is licensed for up to 88 people, which applies for informal parties in a cocktail setting.

The winery requires that at least one Damiani employee be hired to serve as security and as bartender. Because Damiani is a farm winery, it does not have a kitchen. All catering is handled by vendors who transport the food to the site. Cimino has caterers that he is happy to recommend, but brides can hire anyone they wish.

Damiani is, of course, happy to provide its own wine and cider for the event, but is also licensed to procure any wine or beer—from the Finger Lakes region or beyond—for the wedding party. If there is to be hard liquor, then the caterer must apply for a temporary license from the state.

Interestingly, one of the Damiani vineyard workers is also a professional photographer, and Cimino recommends her services to the brides. Rachel Orlyk’s business is called “Life in the Vineyard” and her portfolio can be seen at her website.

Cimino said that he likes to have as much lead time as possible to fix the date, but he said that this has meant about three to six months ahead in his experience thus far. He contrasted his schedule with that of

the Ginny Lee restaurant at Wagner Vineyards up the road in Lodi. “They’ve been doing weddings for years,” he said, “so you have to book much further ahead.”

The tasting room manager noted that recently performers’ rights organizations like BMI and ASCAP have been demanding fees from wineries that host live cover bands. A group of wineries is in negotiations to lower the fees, because wedding bands frequently play well known cover songs. Many local string bands, however, play music in the public domain, which is exempt from fees, as is original music played by local musicians.

Jen Cupp of Thirsty Owl (thirstyowl. com), which is on the west side of Cayuga Lake in Ovid, said the wine company is in beginning its fourth year of hosting larger events. There enlarged bistro can accommodate wedding parties of up to 100 people. Their outdoor deck alone, with a spectacular view of the lake, can hold 60 people.

The winery has a bistro and their chef takes care of all the catering for events held at the winery. Five menus are available for inspection online.These include two sit-down dinners and three buffet spread (one of which focuses on barbecue) Cupp said that approximately half of the events are booked from people who live outside the region with the rest being local.

Thirsty Owl serves only its own wine and Ithaca Beer at its events, but they will seek out local sparkling wines for weddings. Cupp leaves the choice of vendors up to the bride’s, but will offer advice and help.

The winery is close to the shore, but situated on a cliff. Guests may arrive by private boat, but are driven up to the site

Clever takes on the ‘something old, new, borrowed, blue’

W

edding day tokens of good luck come in many forms, but “the something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue (a sixpence in your shoe)” adage remains one of the most popular luck-enhancing wedding traditions. According to the bridal resource The Knot, this tradition stems from an Olde English rhyme. Something

old represents continuity; something new is for optimism for the future; something borrowed stands for borrowed happiness; and something blue is for purity, love and fidelity. The sixpence in your shoe is a wish for good fortunet and prosperity, but this is not a tradition widely celebrated outside of the United Kingdom or British territories.

These traditions can add some creative flair and personality to wedding ceremonies. There’s no end to the inventive combinations of items brides can carry to increase their good fortunes.

Something old Something old is one of the easier mementos to obtain. There is a good chance that someone in the family is willing to pass an item down to the bride that she can include in her wedding wardrobe. It also can be something the bride may have in her own memory box. Beads taken from a grandmother’s dress or a swatch of fabric from a beloved toy doll are creative ideas that can be sewn into inconspicuous places on gowns.

Something new Brides already purchase many new items for their wedding day looks, so “something new” should not be too hard to find.

Couples may want to work together to find

something new they can both carry so they have a matching set upon tying the knot.

Interlocking charm bracelets or keychains may work. What about the groom carrying a small padlock and the bride the key?

Quirky couples can each wear one sock from a pair. Get clever and have fun.

Something borrowed Much like something old, something borrowed is yet another way to pay homage to a friend or family member. It’s also one way to add a sentimental twist to everyday items. Borrow a grandfather’s handkerchief to wrap around the stems of the wedding bouquet. Exchange vows with the original rings used by a distant relative at their own wedding. Flatter a close friend by wearing the same veil she did.

Something blue There are many ways to incorporate “something blue” into your wedding ceremony. Brides can paint their toenails blue or wear blue shoes under their gowns.

Sew a patch from a pair of denim jeans into the bodice of the dress. Paint the bottom of your shoes bright blue so they stand out when kneeling at the altar. Blue sapphire or topaz jewelry can add an exotic look to the wedding wardrobe.

With a little ingenuity, brides can easily incorporate “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” into their wedding ceremonies.

Wedding rings are symbolic gestures of commitment

Exchanging rings is an important wedding day tradition for many couples.

C

ouples adhere to many traditions on their wedding days, including the exchange of wedding rings.

Wedding rings symbolize the union of two people and their pledge to remain faithful to each other.

No one is exactly sure just when the tradition of exchanging wedding rings originated, but some say it can be traced back to ancient Egypt, when the oldest recorded exchange of wedding rings was made. Reeds growing along the Nile were twisted and braided into rings and given during betrothal ceremonies. The round ring symbolized eternity, and the hole within the center meant a gateway to things unknown. Since reeds were not very durable, soon ivory, leather and bone were used to create wedding rings.

As new lands were explored and territories expanded, traditions from one culture were adopted and modified by other cultures.

The same is true with wedding rings.

According to the Diamond Source, wedding

rings were adopted by Romans and incorporated into Western wedding ceremonies. Romans’ rings were highly decorated, and some historians believe wedding rings were given to represent ownership over brides instead of symbolizing love. These rings were made of iron and called “Anulus Pronubus,” or “betrothal ring.”

Rings have been simplified since those days and ultimately made of many materials.

Throughout history, wedding rings were worn on various fingers and even both hands, whereas many married people in Western cultures now wear their wedding rings on the left hand and on the fourth finger.

Romans once believed that this finger contained a vein, called the “Vena Amoris,” that ran directly to the heart. Though that is not true, the tradition has prevailed.

Other legends say that, when blessing a Christian marriage, priests would bind the marriage by saying, “In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,” simultaneously touching the ring to the recipient’s thumb, index finger and middle finger, before slipping it on the fourth finger while saying, “Amen.”

Another theory on ring placement is that wedding rings are worn on the ring finger because that finger isn’t used as much as the rest of the hand, ensuring delicate ring materials won’t be damaged.

Ross Simmons Jewelry states that gold is still the most popular metal choice for wedding rings, but couples are opting for some other metals that are more durable.

Platinum is popular not only because it is long-wearing, but it also tends to be the most expensive. It’s also a dense metal and can feel heavy in hand. Tungsten carbide is another durable metal that has grown in popularity in recent years. These rings cannot be cut and resoldered, which means it’s important to size the rings correctly the first time. Titanium is both lightweight and durable, and it’s popular because it is hypo-allergenic, making it practical for those with allergies to other metals.

Wedding rings continue to serve as symbols of a couple’s vows and union. Much like the marriage itself, they are designed to last the test of time.

Wedding good luck charms

Doves and sugar cubes can symbolize good luck on couples’ wedding days.

ouples’ wedding days are special moments, ones they hope pave the way to a life filled with happiness and good fortune. That’s why the bride and groom surround themselves with close friends and family who want to celebrate and support their new life joined together.

Perhaps due to superstition or tradition, many couples employ some wedding day strategies to increase their good luck. The following are some of the symbols that couples may want to keep an eye out for on the day they walk down the aisle.

It’s good luck for the bride to see a dove on the way to the wedding because doves symbolize peace and prosperity. Because doves mate for life, this symbol is doubly

beneficial on a couple’s wedding day, as it can be a harbinger of a long, happy marriage and home.

Some brides believe sugar cubes tucked into their wedding gloves leads to a sweet union.

Hindu tradition states that rain on a wedding day is good luck. Rain is believed to be a symbol of fortune and abundance, vmore, rain can foretell a strong marriage.

That’s because a wet knot is more difficult to untie.

Ancient Romans were so concerned with ensuring good luck that they actually studied pig entrails to determine the luckiest time to marry. If they consulted

In Holland, well-wishers would plant pine trees outside of newlyweds’ homes as a symbol of fertility and luck.

Grooms may want to give a coin to the first person they see on the way to their weddings. This is another symbol of good luck.

Some couples plan to marry during a full moon, because that can symbolize good luck and good fortune.

On a couple’s wedding day, tears from a

bride or a child during the ceremony is considered lucky. English folklore suggests that brides who discover spiders in their gowns are in for some good luck.

The Chinese believe that lighting fireworks at their wedding ceremonies chases away evil spirits. A red umbrella also might be held over a Chinese bride to keep bad spirits at bay.

Many grooms do not see their brides in their wedding gowns before their wedding ceremonies, feeling it is bad luck if they do. Many brides also do not wear their complete wedding outfits prior to their big day.

Those about to tie the knot may feel somewhat limited in their ability to shape their weddings into unique celebrations of their relationships and love for one another. Although it may not seem like there are many opportunities to put your own stamp on the wedding, there are plenty of ways to do just that.

When looking to personalize your wedding ceremony, determine if there might be anything blocking you from doing so. For example, if yours will be a religious ceremony, there may be certain rites that need to be followed. Secular ceremonies may offer more opportunities to customize.

Vows: Vows are one of the easiest ways to put a personal touch on your wedding.

You can select the words you want to exchange during the ceremony as well as any readings during the service. Work with your officiant to narrow down particular phrasing or sentiments that fit with your vision of the wedding and relationship.

Participants: Wedding party members fulfill certain roles during the ceremony, but

they are not limited to those tasks alone.

Consider asking wedding party members or other friends or family members to take on specialized roles in the wedding. They may be able to do certain readings, escort guests to their seats, light candles, or sing and participate in other ways.

Musical interludes: Choose music that connects with your personalities as a couple rather than selecting standard songs merely

because they are the easier route. Work with the organist or other musicians and request that they perform or play musical pieces that you enjoy.

Candle lighting: Many couples like to incorporate candle-lighting components to their ceremonies. Lighting unity candles blends two families together into one in a symbolic way. Other couples choose different traditions, such as mixing two different-colored sands in a new vessel, to represent the joining of two lives together.

Rehearsal dinner how-to

M

any couples find their wedding rehearsal dinners to be relaxing respites from the whirlwind of wedding planning. Such dinners enable the happy couple to slow down and enjoy themselves in a relatively casual gathering with their closest friends and family members.

Rehearsal dinners typically take place in the night or two before the wedding.

The couple, members of their wedding party, the parents of the bride and groom and others involved in the wedding typically attend this dinner. The couple generally takes the time at the dinner to thank everyone for their contributions to the wedding and to offer some small gifts of appreciation. No rules govern rehearsal dinners, so couples have the freedom to plan the dinners as they see fit.

Rehearsal dinners often come immediately after the ceremony rehearsal, when the wedding party and the officiant go over the timing and details of the wedding. Make arrangements with the ceremony site and

officiant prior to making dinner reservations.

Parents of the groom traditionally host the rehearsal dinner, so they will be integral in planning the event. That means couples should keep an open and gracious mind. Remember, the rehearsal dinner doesn’t have to be a lavish affair, and it can be customized to any budget or preference.

Some couples feel that hosting rehearsal dinners in casual settings can make the dinner more comfortable for members of the wedding, who can use the dinner as

an opportunity to mingle and get to know one another before the wedding.

This will help to tame nerves and enable the wedding party to loosen up and enjoy themselves even more. Some people may be more inclined to socialize and have fun when they’re not worried about putting on airs.

wo years ago the staff of the Museum of the Earth at the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) got wind of the planned renovations at the National Museum of Natural History, part of the Smithsonian Institution. The local museum saw an opportunity to complement their existing collections of fossils with models that reconstructed the forms of extinct species and, in many cases, placed them in a simulation of their now-vanished habitats.

a vanished time with a vision that is both raw and poignant. Begun around 1972 as an independent study project while Staffeld was a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology, the series reflects the peripatetic approach of the artist’s youth—nights and days spent wandering the neighborhoods of Rochester, as well as the large and smaller cities of upstate New York and the Hudson Valley.

Although undated, the pieces palpably capture a time and a milieu.

In the words of a statement prepared for the show, “these images document what was once a rich and dense urban landscape that was becoming postindustrial.” The prints alternate between starkly objective reportage and a seemingly

more subjective approach. Most capture views from the sidewalk—some unpeopled, others incorporating portraiture.

The exhibit has been beautifully hung.

It features five oversized, wide format prints, presented unframed. These form a sort of centerpiece that complements the smaller, framed pieces which have been hung on opposite walls. Blown up and absent glass, the pixelization in these images is marked, adding another level of rawness.

Rochester – Right places us by the right side of a broad thoroughfare. It is night and an unseen streetlight cast a bright halo towards the upper left corner. A jumble of fencing and debris crowds the right edge of the image. A young man, dressed debonairly in the manner of the time, stands in front of us—he waves his hand as if to hail a taxi.

Staffeld’s customary use of long exposure here is particularly marked in a pair of prints using motion blur to evoke a night out. University Bar, Rochester is one of a small number of interior scenes. We seem to be staring up at the patrons seated at the counter to the right—the blur of their bodies further captures the atmosphere of inebriation. Rochester takes us out on the sidewalk, suffused with shadows and haze. To the left is a lit window, to the right, parked cars. In the middle, we encounter a strange figure; his (her?) face lit, a bright scarf or collar, crossed arms resembling rope.

The statement (a collaboration between the artist and AAP Director of Exhibitions Mark Morris) reinforces the sense of these images as mementos of a lost time: By the late 1970s, upstate New York’s fire had been all but extinguished. At night, and even during daylight, only the shadows of former things and beings remained. It was a spirit world that would reveal itself in the moment Staffeld unwound the dripping wet film from the reel. The excitement of seeing what he had been given to ponder on film—like jewels that come alive only when light is cast upon them—still persists as his creative incentive, illuminating moments when he picks up a camera.

This is a rare chance for the public to see this work, which appears here in printed format for the first time.

Acts of Revolution

local shows unravel violence, search for change

V

iolence is an act that is oftentimes difficult to discuss, muddled with questions of why and how, or umbrella-ed under a larger assumption of collective blame and unease. In today’s society, in a world still full of school shootings, unjust deaths, police brutality, and a heated and continuous battle over safety legislation and gun control laws, it seems perhaps bold yet unsurprising that the Ithaca community might take hold of this unrest and do what it does best: create and exhibit art in an attempt to enact paths of dialogue and change. In fact, there are not one but two shows up now to which I am alluding, separate from one another despite thematic overlap. First is Unloaded at the Handwerker Gallery at Ithaca College, an exhibition curated by Susanne Slavick that aims to tackle guns as both objects and icons in American culture; second is Project for a Re-volution in New York, open at the Tompkins County Public Library (TCPL) until April, which explores various meanings and acts of revolution.

“Society prepares the crime; the criminal commits it,” reads a fading slip of fortune cookie fortune, taped to the inside lid of a small box presented by artist Renee Stout. Smiley faces sandwich the phrase, and in the box lays a small, gleaming pistol.

A cut out doll is attached above the fortune, smiling in its floral dress. The piece’s title proclaims: Baby’s First Gun. It’s cutesy and banal—kitsch. It mocks an air of innocence, of innocuousness. But Stout’s piece, which is part of the Unloaded show, presents one of the many points the Handwerker aims to make, questioning the carefree passivity the fortune exhibits and why something so violent—even for protection—could be handed out so playfully to a child as some sort of rite of passage. The act appears oldfashioned and flawed, the gift like some relic of the past.

In all, the Handwerker show has a lot to say, from the joking powerlessness of a water gun pointed to a plane in Jinshan’s photograph I also like hijacking to the alarming resonance of Andrew Ellis Johnson’s Rehearsal, in which bullets plug a pair of marble cast ears in an attempt to ignore any talk of danger.

But some of the show’s strength lies in its subtleties: one standout is Lauren Adams’ Granny Smith and Wesson, which consists of a small stool one could find in a grandparent’s house, perhaps in the sitting room. Its pattern, at first forgettable and easy to overlook, boasts a continuum of cutely drawn guns, reduced to symbols of domesticity despite their inherent violence.

Meanwhile, Project for a Re-volution in New York at TCPL is not exclusively an examination of guns, though they do play

a part. The show, curated by Todd Ayoung and Krishna Ramanujan, was inspired by Alain Robbe-Grillet’s novel of the same name, a book of unrest in 1970s New York City. Ayoung and Ramanujan write in the show’s statement of the dual nature of the term “revolution,” an act that describes

both political upheaval as well as a rotation of social structures. It is not confined to anarchy, but is resistance and subversion, a change in the ways we see, act, and function. Some of the works in the show speak more clearly than others—Kadie Salfi’s Red Guns, for example, are insightful and terrifying prints, jumping out from within bookshelves and labeled with the specific school shootings to which each gun refers—but the eclecticism of the show’s works as a whole present a diverse collection of oddities, some created documents and others found. “The story presented,” Jason Kates Van Stavern writes of his piece of found 35mm slides, “supports my belief in the responsibility of every person to foment and enact change

when the systems in which they participate fail.” Both shows do just this in enthralling and eye-opening ways, dissecting failing systems in search of something new. •

Lyric Visions II at the State of the Art Gallery

T

he State of the Art Gallery is a cooperatively owned and operated gallery here in Ithaca that features a roster of truly wonderful visual artists.

They are currently featuring the show “Lyric Visions II.” The idea is “Gallery members have created work in response to the poetry of sixteen regional poets invited by Tish Pearlman, poet laureate of Tompkins County in 2013.”

This is a rich and wonderful show, and this is part two. Half of the artists showed work in January (visit ithaca.com to read Ithaca Times art critic Amber Donofrio’s review “Melodic Perceptions”) and the other half is showing this February.

I’ll mention a handful of pieces that I found most compelling.

Mary Ann Bowman, Silver Birds I, II, & III (poem: “Me and Emily” by Bruce Bennett): I was quite attracted to these sculptures of cartoon bird creatures.

They look like little silver alien birds.

I suppose I liked them so much because I am a cartoonist, and I have a lifelong love of science fiction art.

The birds are about 2 feet tall and have silver pipe torsos, silver tube legs, four silver coiled-spring arm-wings, silly silver fabric heads, and bird claws made of silver fabric.

Frances Fawcett, Just Breath (poem: “Planktonic” by Laura Glenn): Just Breath is a long vertical computer-generated painting of a marsh with fish in the water, herons in the marsh grass, and seagulls in

the sky. Down toward the bottom of the painting there are horseshoe crabs looking as prehistoric as trilobites. And, as we pan up through the marsh to the sky, the gulls become increasingly abstract and the sky full of geometric patterns, as if traveling from the primordial past to the mathematical future.

Diane Newton, Mother’s Day (poem: “Pigeon Park”): This is a remarkable work—a very large pastel of a fenced-in asphalt park in Boston with young people playing basketball. It is a remarkably realistic painting composed of parking garages, freeways, and distant city buildings.

A towering mountain of white summer cumulous clouds rising on the horizon seems almost surrealistic … the glowing, white natural forms contrasting with the geometric forms of the city.

Patty L. Porter, Bay Side, From Blueberry Island, Seeking Peace (poem: “Wanting Silence” by Katharyn Howd Machan): These are a series of oil paintings of natural areas—a path through a forest along a lake, a forest with a creek running through it, and a green hillock in an emerald forest with green moss and exposed shale.

I like them because, although they are realistic paintings, they are slightly stylized, almost cartooned, with a bright hyperrealism going on.

He composes landscapes and starscapes out of what looks like thousands of roiling and fizzing elementary particles.

Here, I particularly like Tidal Wave, as he is clearly riffing on Japanese watercolors and woodblock prints—another love of mine—with his cresting wave and distant snow-capped mountain on the horizon.

Patricia Brown, Spontaneous Drawings, Spontaneous Collages (poem: “Spontaneous Poem #310” by Michael Czarnecki): Brown’s work is abstract expressionism. The cool thing is that every painting seems completely new, unlike any other.

She pushes this into the ozone with the installations Spontaneous Drawings and Spontaneous Collages. The former contains

five time card racks with 25 color drawings in each rack. The latter is composed of one rack with 25 mini-paintings.

There are little white Mickey Mouse gloves hanging from the racks, so you can take out individual pieces and look at them.

It seems to me than Brown’s work is the visual equivalent of jazz music. There’s something musical in its spontaneity.

There’s a lot more to see, including another whole salon room of artwork.

Sorcery and Depth Widening Local extreme metal band brings the dimension

T

here’s nothing like a violently epic guitar riff to turn your direction of day towards one of rosy fortunes, Kierkegaardian possibilities, and permanent bliss. You know the type I’m talking about: that ostinato melodic phrase in Killswitch Engage’s “My Last Serenade,” the main hook in Slayer’s “Raining Blood,” the section in Behemoth’s “No Sympathy for Fools” that causes you to start recklessly head-banging and playing wild air-guitar in the middle of a crowded city center. The Anderson Tapes, a young extreme-metal quintet from Ithaca, know a thing or two about this alchemic riff; they’ve harvested a boatload of them. “‘Sleep Paralysis’ started as a riff written by myself and guitarist Alec Fiorentino,” Andrew Cavaciuti, the other guitarist of The Anderson Tapes, told me recently. “The song then grew off of this.

Most of the time we try to work with one idea and see how many times we can vary

it while still being musically interesting.

This song also features a fairly subdued and quiet section, which is rare for our music.

Still, this section gets its roots from that first riff.”

And from this riff on down, the band ventures mightily down the progressivedeath-experimental rabbit hole, shrinking, augmenting, and growing spectacularly.

Which is pretty impressive, as you don’t hear these kind of dynamic musical combos birthed around Tompkins County on the reg. The band changes stylistic forms on a dime, calling to mind such ubiquitous beasts as Gigan, Candiria, Dillinger Escape Plan, Car Bomb, and Blotted Science.

“We love experimentation and the sound of technicality/complexity,” Cavaciuti noted. “Often in metal, technicality is used to boast skill—technicality for the sake of technicality, and not because it makes sense musically. We try to use it for the right sonic reasons.” And it shows. Along with the brutal grind bust-outs and death metal earthquakes, the band has an equal fondness for soaring melodicism.

Ithaca Underground’s fundraiser compilation

M

ixtapes are those unique archaic lifelines that carry your weary physical being through the trials and tribulations of existence. They’re flown about—battered and polished through the tide of time, and then tossed up on shore. Long after our ugly carcasses are wiped from existence, these tapes are what future extraterrestrial beings will find when combing this barren earth. But mixtapes are becoming increasingly rare in this technologically-confused civilization. Who has time for a mixtape? Cassettes—what the hell are those for? Well, I still make them to this day, and I couldn’t imagine life without such a dialogue.

Ithaca Underground (IU), the city’s official non-profit wunderkinds, has similar veins and inner-intestines as the sacred mixtape. They both run on that creative bile that releases freedom from the shackles of banality. IU has a new fundraiser compilation out, Ithaca Underground Vol. 2, and while it may only be available electronically at ithacaunderground. bandcamp.com right now, it can be easily purchased, downloaded, and transferred to your dusty cassettes in the closet. Then you’ll have yourself one killer mixtape to cruise around to, walk aimlessly with, and live inter-dimensionally through. And you’ll be helping IU out. That’s a two-for, a no-brainer.

The compilation is a 51-song monster of local, regional, and occasionallypassing-through-the-area (Texas, Norway, Germany) musical groups and artists that purveys the needs of all sonic explorers.

Kudos to the curators; this thing reminds me of Sub Pop Record’s Sub Pop 200 compilation (1988) and Troubleman Unlimited’s Troubleman Mix-Tape (2001), both spectacular specimens of mixtapeology.

There’s a ton of diverse material on the compilation, which showcases the fledging and daring spirit of Ithaca Underground’s mission: one of inclusion of all things creative, sacred, and underground. Well, you want highlights, right? Here are a few to chew on: DS’s “Tunnel” is a song straight out of Angelo Badalamenti’s inner torture chamber, but the good kind of torture chamber. The kind with pleasing ambient horror textures that shift evenly, like when you’re crossing over the Throgs Neck Bridge in your Volkswagen bus—thump, thump, thump, splatter. Aviatrix’s “Gears” 28

is a smooth electronic-trip-hop and house-influenced ballad—really well done, showcasing a voice as smooth as soymilk.

I saw Aviatrix recently at Sacred Root and was really inspired. Afterwards—and still, actually—I yearned to start a trip-hop noise project with some friends.

Syracuse’s Bleak has a pummeling blackened-doom-crusher entitled “Handicapper General” on the compilation.

The song breaks you down into the earth until you’re suffocated in grass and mud and can’t quite breathe—but man, you’re

happy. Ithaca/New York duo Twin Lords brings the progressive-exaggerations to full tilt with their mind-twitching, wavestressing, wickedly grinding number “The Fear.”

The Kraken Quartet, from Ithaca, have a really nice Triosk meets Steve Reich number entitled “Chance the Dog (the Song).” A percussive construction teetering on the brink of minimalism, the song is hauntingly spry, and it really mixes well in-between Tender Cruncher’s abstract avant-bubblegum piece “Shrinkled” and The Gonopod’s Horse the Band-like dirt-punk number “YOUR FAMILY IS BIGOTRY ITSELF.” And nothing screams mixtape like some sharp-edged, dualistic rap. New Haven’s Ceschi brings the lyrical hard-bop realism with “Madmen,” featuring Hartford, Connecticut/NYC’s Khaiim. The flow between the two is crazy smooth, calling to mind famous combos like Common and Nas and the grittiest of the Wu Tang Clan’s third-chamber sing-a-longs.

There’s so much more killer s*** on this compilation; it’s ridiculous. You need to check it out for yourself. And like I said, you can always download it and then mix it onto a cassette. IU also has their annual February fundraiser this Friday, Feb. 19 at The Haunt. It’ll be a good place to hang, and some of the musicians on the compilation will be playing. So live it large, folks, and get to mixing. •

influenced by these objects. So they’re iconic, historic, and artistic treasures. And they come from the Smithsonian.”

The newest exhibits were designed and built by Terry Chase of Chase Studios in Missouri. Some of the older ones date back to the 1950s and were constructed

by Chase’s mentors, Paul and George Marchand, whose work is also in the Buffalo Museum of Science, Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History, and the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Their father Henri, also a museum diorama designer, was trained by Auguste Rodin. Chase will be visiting the Museum of the Earth in the spring to give a talk on the art of museum exhibition design.

The original interpretive material from the national museum, the “reader rails” (in museum parlance), came along with the exhibits. The PRI staff has supplemented them with panels that provide updated paleontological interpretations and information about how the exhibits were made. “[The models] are mostly still representative of what paleontologists think these organisms looked like when they were alive,” said Allmon. “And seeing them in person is more powerful than seeing them in the familiar twodimensional images. So they represent an amazing resource for showing this to visitors to our museum. This is especially true of these particular pieces, which nicely complement existing pieces in our permanent exhibits. For example, we already have Ediacara, Burgess Shale, and eurypterid fossils on exhibit.”

The “Ediacaran fauna” lived 600 to 545 million years ago, and is a group of organisms that produced no descendants.

They are a source of fascination because their bodies had designs and apparent functions that were not replicated by later life forms. The organisms preserved in the Burgess Shale lived 508 millions years ago, but like the Ediacaran creatures, many of their like were not seen again. In addition, the imprints of the “soft parts” of members of both of these faunas were in many cases preserved.

It was particularly apt that the Museum of the Earth received the eurypterid models. These extinct scorpion-like arthropods, which lived between 440 and 415 million years ago, are the official New York State fossil.

They were sometimes several feet long.

“We only got half of the ones in the original display [to fit in the Borg Warner diorama],” said Stricker. “The other ones are in my office.” She seemed pleased to have the company.

In addition to the dioramas, PRI received several very large exhibits.

The most recognizable, even to casual natural-history museum visitors, is the Stegosaurus, a 25- to 30-foot-long dinosaur that lived 155 to 150 million years ago. Until the mid-20th century it was rare to see complete Stegosaurus skeletons

mounted. The Smithsonian model is made of papier-mâché over a metal armature with wooden supports. The life-size model arrived at PRI in three sections. A time-lapse video at the museum website recreates the reassembly process.

The Stegosaurus has already been integrated into the museum’s permanent collection; it now stands in front of paintings of its Jurassic habitat created

by Ithaca muralist Mary Beth Ihnken.

Installing the dinosaur required knocking out a wall, Stricker said, and everyone was relieved when it passed under a sprinkler system pipe, clearing it by half an inch.

The Borg Warner Gallery is twostories high with the skeleton of a right whale hanging over it. Some of the recreations of Carboniferous- and Triassic-period trees (respectively, over 300 and over 200 million years old) reach about two-thirds of the way up to the hanging whale. Their branches and leaves, which look vaguely like crosses between pine boughs and fern fronds, have been meticulously simulated based on impressions from the fossil record.

Smithsonian staff members, not Chase or the Marchand brothers, created the models using wood and plaster.

Flowering plants, which gave rise to the majority of modern trees, did not appear until 160 millions years ago. For those who have tried to imagine ancient forests based on finding tiny chips of fossil wood scattered through sedimentary rocks in New York State, these models are a revelation: there was once a whole different sort of “tree-ness.”

The largest exhibit is a model of a pterosaur (flying reptile) called Quetzalcoatlus, which had a wingspan of approximately 36 feet. When it was standing on all fours, Stricker said, it was the height of a giraffe. At the time it was discovered in Texas in the early 1970s, it was the largest flying reptile that had been found.

The body of the pterosaur is on

display, but its wings are still crated and sitting next to the ramp that brings you down into the museum galleries. Eventually, said Stricker, the wings will be reattached and Quetzalcoatlus will hang from the ceiling, soaring over the main hall of the Museum of the Earth, just as the right whale skeleton floats above the Borg Warner Gallery.

The drama of seeing a life-like reptile the size of a Cessna flying over you is part of the art of museum displays. Staring through the glass at the Ediacaran organisms, you almost expect them to start to move with an unseen current. The size of the eurypterids will make you a little nervous.

“One of the overarching themes of the Museum of the Earth is the interrelatedness of art and science, especially art and paleontology,” said Allmon. “We’ve always tried to encourage people to understand why scientists and artists produce the images of ancient life as they do.

Some of these pieces still represent modern scientific consensus, but others have been superseded by later research. The pieces therefore represent a wonderful opportunity to tell stories about how science works, and how our understanding improves over time.” •

TOiVO is a six-piece band from Trumansburg, N.Y. playing Finnish, Tex-Mex, and original music suited to the traditional dances of the Finger Lakes Region - waltzes, schottisches, polkas, mazurkas, two-steps, hambos and reels. You may also hear the occasional tango, huapango, two-step, bourree or polonaise - from Argentina, Venezuala, or Russia. The band consists of Richard Koski, button accordion; Jason Koski, mandolin; Stefan Senders, banjo; Jim Reidy, guitar; Harley Campbell, upright bass; and Annie Campbell, snare drum.

Lesley Dill works in sculpture, photography, and performance using a variety of media and techniques to explore themes of language, the body, and transformational experience. Her work has been widely exhibited and collected and can be found in the collections of the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo; the Cleveland Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; and the Johnson Museum, among many others. Her work is extensive, layered in warm depth, and highly original.

HeadsUp Deadpool’s Screen Debut

yan Reynolds has been knocking around the movie business for more than 20 years. I first remember seeing him in 1999’s tween Nixon satire Dick, and if I had to pick a stand-out role, it would be his surprising turn in 2006’s Smokin’ Aces. For me, Reynolds has remained generic and anonymous no matter what he does.

Now, as the potty-mouthed psychopath comic book anti-hero Deadpool in the new movie by the same name, Ryan Reynolds has finally found the movie role that puts him on the map.

Reynolds’s Marvel character has a pleasing alliterative name—Wade Wilson—and he does play a guy with superpowers trying to protect his girlfriend (Morena Baccarin) from the obligatory British bad guy (Ed Skrein), but the whole thing is blown so far over the top with profanity, obscure pop references (my favorite might be Ronnie Milsap or Juice Newton) and meta breaking of the fourth wall, that it sure doesn’t feel like the same ol’ same ol’ superhero stuff. It’s also the eighth film in Fox’s X-Men series, but it even makes so much fun of that mutant gang that it feels like the Mel Brooks version of itself.

Jim is no stranger to Ithaca, as his murals adorn the walls of many

very first shot—one of those signature David Fincher camera moves through a giant freezeframe of incredible ultraviolence set to Newton’s “Angel of the Morning”— that it knows what kind of genre movie it is satirizing. The credits are credited to “A Gratuitous Cameo” and “The Comic Relief,” the producers are, well, unmentionable, and the writers are “The Real Heroes Here.” Reynolds’ Deadpool, clad head to toe in a red vinyl suit, starts out as a special forces op/hired goon, gets incurable cancer and is remade by X Forces agents into the title character, a sarcastic ne’er-do-well who likes Salt N’ Pepa and breaking the fourth wall to make Groucho-like comments.

At one point, he breaks the fourth wall, then does it again, resulting in what, 16 walls?

This isn’t even Reynolds’ first comic book rodeo. He played a terrible, mute, neutered version of the Deadpool character in the first solo Wolverine movie, sending fans into Hulk-sized hissy fits. He then made the thoroughly generic and undistinguished Green Lantern movie a few years back, so going into this, his geek cred with Comic Book Nation was in serious doubt. Luckily, Reynolds isn’t so delusional as not to know all this, and so Deadpool doesn’t just rip on the conventions of funny books and funny book movies, it also rips

eateries and public buildings. His is a world unto itself with colossal-headed men and a fiery sense of fun. He has done some cracking new work for the show and it’s sure to excite. Aside from Ant-Man and the Thor movies, I’ve been enjoying the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe films, but even they are settling into a PG-13 pattern where all the heroes are very chaste, no one really dies and everything is somewhat family-friendly and sanded down to appeal to the global box office.

much grittier, sexual and violent version of the MCU. As I wrote in my column about the best films of 2015, I stated the obvious, that these shows were most emphatically not for children.

But as someone who grew up during the transition from comic books to graphic novels, I began to wonder when or if the films would ever catch up to books like Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen. Surely the Zack Snyder adaptation wouldn’t be the only comic book movie with graphic sex and violence. With the arrival of Deadpool, it isn’t. •
