ore large-scale buildings are planned for student housing in Collegetown.

The city planning board got their initial look at a five-story, 76-room project proposed for 201 College Avenue by Todd Fox, a partner in Modern Living Rentals, who is taking on student housing with his new venture, the Visum Development Group. Modern Living just got a project approved in the hamlet of Varna two weeks ago.

There’s currently a 12-room building on the site, which sits at the southern edge of the Collegetown MU-1 (mixed use) district, which allows buildings up to 70 feet high.

The board was generally supportive of the project drawings, but asked for a more distinctive roofline. It was agreed that if Fox and architect Noah Demarestof STREAM Collaborative can get a zoning variance to move the building back from the street, that would represent an attempt to continue making College Avenue feel like a boulevard.

The board also heard about the proposal to create a new incentive zoning program (“Trying to Incentivize Affordable Housing in Ithaca,” March 16 Ithaca Times), which has been making the rounds at city board and committee meetings.

One of the proposed incentives for a developer would be to allow them to skip the “site plan review” process. Board members expressed their irritation; it is they who oversee these reviews. Lynn Truame of the Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency has told city officials that developers find skipping site plan review to be, perhaps, the best incentive the city has available.

“My concern is we’re silencing the public’s ability to speak up,” John Schroeder said. “We need a board [that residents can] appear before [and] express their concerns.

If it’s all done administratively and there’s no plan for review, where do they go?”

Many people have assumed that the project was finished, but Campus Advantage has not thrown in the towel.

The board’s initial agenda had a new sketch plan listed for 301 E. State St., the Trebloc/ State Street Triangle site, but that was dropped before the meeting. Expect more news on where that project is at to come in April. • – Josh Brokaw reporter@ithacatimes.com

Pilot for Housing Families in Need

F

amilies with students at Beverly J. Martin (BJM) Elementary School whose living situation is unsettled might soon have some help in creating a stable home.

The Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency (IURA) is proposing what it calls a “Housing for School Success” pilot program at BJM. Housing will be found for five families which meet the definition of homelessness.

IURA is asking decision-makers at Housing and Urban Development for permission to fund the first year of the program with about $104,000 in federal monies that were returned from unfinished projects last year. If the pilot proposal is approved, the money will go to covering rent vouchers for the five families and paying a part-time social worker to help hook people up with services.

After the first year, the Ithaca Housing Authority will take over the program, and potentially increase the number of families included. The families are asked to keep their student(s) in the same school for however long they participate.

“In year 1, when the IURA is funding the rental assistance portion of the project, participants will pay 30 percent of their income toward their rent and the IURA will make up the difference,” Lynn Truame, IURA community development director, wrote in an email. “When IHA takes over the rental assistance portion of the project, Section 8 or public housing assistance is the rent subsidy.”

Anyone in the program will get to “jump the line” for rental assistance.

“There’s a long waiting list for Section 8 assistance and only a somewhat shorter wait list for public housing,” Truame continued. “The big advantage here is that participants in this program will not have to wait for that assistance, they will be continued on page 4

Leaning Toward Sharing W/Bikes

If you were in the Peace Corps, where would you go?

N

o decisions have yet been made on whether Tioga Street will get bicycle lanes in its 200 and 300 blocks, outside the Tompkins County courthouse and Ithaca’s post office.

After over an hour of public comment and discussion at Monday’s City of Ithaca Board of Public Works meeting, the consensus seems to be leaning toward simply extending the “sharrows”—shared lane arrows—from Court Street south to the Commons.

Four people spoke in favor of adding bike lanes to the two-block stretch, including Dave Nutter and David West of the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Council and Vikki Armstrong of Streets Alive! They stressed the importance of connecting the Bike Boulevard system with downtown to encourage more bicycle riders.

“These lanes are framed as cars versus bicyclists, as if bicyclers were a more nefarious version of Mad Max, as if we want to rule the roads,” said Pat Dutt in her comments supporting the lanes. “Bicycling is a legitimate form of transportation and we need safe routes through cities.”

Seven people expressed their reservations about removing parking on the east side of Tioga Street, where there are 13 paid spots between Buffalo and Court streets and five unpaid, 10-minute spots in front of the post office and the Ithaca town hall. Whether the post office could suffer from removing that parking was speculated upon.

prioritized for available units owned by [Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services], and they will receive case management services designed to help them address their particular barriers to housing stability.”

The target number of five families covers all of the known homeless families at BJM right now, Truame said. She heard of the idea, pioneered at McCarver elementary school in Tacoma, Wash., through materials HUD sends out to urban planners. After receiving the endorsement of BJM principal Susan Eschbach, along with the leadership at IHA and INHS, Truame put together a grant application for 2016-17 funding.

The Tacoma program is finishing up the fifth year of a five-year pilot process, according to Andrea Cobb, program director at the Tacoma Housing Authority.

business concerns, and Tim Gammons, who works at the Hilton Garden, said he was unsure of the wisdom of taking away spots “when there are a lack of spaces even in the parking garage as we speak.” John Graves of the South Hill Civic Association read a letter that said his organization “supports the lanes in concept, but not when they’re eliminating the parking for public institutions.”

Commissioner Jonathan Greene said he was “torn” between the options, while adding that the Seneca Street parking garage “is a viable option on that block.”

“To make the argument the post office lives and breathes and dies without any parking in front of it is ludicrous to me,” Greene added.

Commissioner Bill Goldsmith, despite making a planning career of

fighting against a culture that subsidizes automobiles, came out in favor of extending the sharrows, for now. He agreed with Mayor Svante Myrick’s assertion that traffic in these blocks “is pretty contained and pretty slow.”

Parking director Frank Nagy told the room that adding bike lanes would turn those two blocks of Tioga Street into "100 percent parked blocks," after his department was charged with freeing up street parking for easy and quick access to downtown businesses, an effort, Nagy said, which has worked through raising prices on the street and lowering them in the garages. •

The McCarver project will be expanded to at least one more Tacoma school next year. Fifty families was set as the cap there when the program began in 2011; between 16 and 20 percent of students at McCarver had been homeless at some point, of a school population of nearly 1,000.

Two caseworkers, who are employed

by THA, help “find paths to resources for the families where we can,” Cobb said, “so the school itself is more stable now.”

The caseworkers help parents with things like financial literacy and plugging into certification and job training programs, along with anything from acquiring furniture to making sure they have transportation to work. Extensive studies have been performed by Geo Education & Research on every year of the program, the study funded in large part by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

THA highlights findings like the “school annual mobility rate,” the number

of students changing schools during the year, dropping from 114 percent before Year One, to 96 percent after the first year and to 74 percent after Year Three.

According to their 2015 report, the average earned income of the families more than doubled since entering the program.

“Patience,” Cobb said, is key to “building a relationship with the school district partner.”

The McCarver principal, counselor, and attendance secretary are key day-to-day personnel in keeping up communications with the THA caseworkers.

“We always want to let parents know there’s multiple avenues to go to in a time of need,” Cobb said. •

Looking for Funding For “Plan Ithaca”

W

hen Mayor Svante Myrick first announced the city’s comprehensive drug policy in late February, he was asked what benefit all the national press might have for implementing the plan.

“Resources, in a word,” the mayor responded. “This could be a model that other communities could adopt, but proving that model is going to be difficult without resources more than the city alone can do.”

The word is out about the supervised injection facility, at the least, with most national outlets noting the proposal for a safe shooting gallery. Other aspects of the plan with longer track records in the United States have some history of gaining foundation monies, nationwide.

According to Joanne Florino, who has directed the Park and Triad foundations and now is a vice president at the Philanthropy Roundtable, an industry nonprofit, national funders “might be the ones most interested in the injection site because of the fact it would be the first in the U.S.” Usually, Florino said, Ithaca’s size works against it getting much attention from foundations looking to receive “bang for their buck” in the form of statistically significant longitudinal studies on program effectiveness: they want initiatives that can be replicated, in short.

TCAT Faces Serious Driver Shortage

he Tompkins County Area Transit system is facing a severe shortage of drivers, which may lead to cuts in service through the summer. According to Gerry Monaghan, on the transit committee for the Tompkins County Council of Governments, “They need 82 drivers and right now they have 69. They’re using ten temporary drivers, from California. They’re contracted to be here through the end of May. TCAT normally reduces service in the summer as most college students leave the area for summer break. Most of the routes to be cut will involve Cornell and Ithaca College. Rural routes affected will be the 20 (Enfield); 21 (T’burg); 36 and 37 (Lansing); 52 (Caroline and Brooktondale) which loses three trips, and 65 (Danby) which loses one morning and one afternoon trip.

Although TCAT offers to train drivers, and starting salary of $19 an hour includes health insurance and benefits, the transit company is struggling to recruit and keep drivers. Local school districts are also facing a driver shortage but unlike the school districts, TCAT’s offering full time positions. Although a CDL (chauffeur’s) license is required, the transit company offers to train applicants.

“There’s a real possibility that those cuts will stay in place in the fall,” said Monaghan. TCAT is making a case to get more funding from New York State, he reported.

“The goal is to save on revenue hours,” said Monaghan. “The rural routes are not supporting their costs. Meanwhile, whether you approach mass transit from an environmental standpoint or as an antipoverty measure, it’s important.”

TCAT is a three-way partnership between Tompkins County, Cornell University, and the City of Ithaca. Each entity pitches in a third of the operating

costs, about $830,000 a year. This year, said Monaghan, all three are pitching in an additional $50,000. “The good news is that Governor Cuomo is allocating from four to five million dollars in additional funding through the state in the next five years.”

Both the NYS Senate and Assembly have proposals to assist rural bus services, and are angling for more money than the governor is proposing.

“The biggest thing we can do is advocate,” said Monaghan.

Mike Lane, chair of the Tompkins County legislature, said, “Our population hurts us in the (funding) formula. We’re a small county with a relatively large mass transit system.”

Lane continued, “Before TCAT was formed, the county had TomTran, which was rural. The city bus system was in trouble. I’m going to raise an eyebrow if we lose rural services. If that happens I’m going to wonder, why is the county in this?”

In April, TCAT is planning public information sessions. Information about these sessions will be posted in the near future on TCAT’s web site. •

t’s common knowledge that members of the House of Representatives are people of high moral character, so much so that staying true to bedrock principles is always more important than mere politics. There are no exceptions. So when Tom Reed, our own Congressman, endorsed Donald Trump on March 16, after stumping for Jeb since July of last year, we knew there had to be a logical explanation. Sadly, Tom Reed is the same guy who used “Ithaca liberal” to smear his opponent Martha Robertson in his high-road 2014 campaign, so we’ve had to imagine how he’d respond to selected interview questions. REED: Well, thank you. I won’t be making the trip. It’s an election year, after all! I should point out that it’s technically the ‘Laval Accommodation Prize’. They’re a little sensitive about it.

SBR: Oops. Our bad! Well, let’s get right to it: your timing in announcing your endorsement of Donald Trump, right after Super Tuesday II, when he really picked up steam, has raised some eyebrows. You did come out pretty forcefully for Jeb Bush last summer. Are you going to back whomever seems likely to win?

REED: Yes, as I said in my press release, “as the people vote, it has become clear more Republicans favor Donald Trump than any other candidate.” Seems pretty straightforward. I was all for Jeb when it looked like he was going to be a winner.

Now Trump has the momentum. No shame in switching your bet when the odds shift, is there?

SBR: I guess, but a person could draw the conclusion that it’s a cynical move.

That you don’t follow a set of principals or beliefs but simply bend the way the wind is blowing. What about that?

REED: It’s called being responsive.

I don’t consider it a bad thing that I pay attention to how my constituents blow. And this election cycle I’m paying particular attention to the Republican primary voters who are really blowing the hardest.

SBR: No argument there.

Congressman, is there any truth to the notion that you and Representative Chris Collins have caved in to threats from deeppocketed Buffalo businessman Carl ‘Il Duce’ Paladino? Were you afraid he’d follow through and fund a primary challenger if you didn’t endorse Trump?

REED: That’s just absurd. I bow to no man or woman. It’s just insulting to think that a member of Congress would bow to political pressure. Um … he won’t see this, will he? I mean, this is just an Ithaca thing, right?

SBR: Well, mostly, yes. Another question: you met with Mr. Trump last Monday. Any talk of a place in his administration should the general election go his way?

REED: Well, there was some idle mention of maybe Gauleiter of New York’s Southern Tier, or perhaps a position in the Immigrant Relocation Ministry. Nothing concrete. Just small talk, really. My first loyalty is to my Republican constituents, of course. No harm in buying in on the ground floor, though, I always say.

SBR: What with the New York primary coming up, votes to deliver, and the fundraising and pandering for your own reelection campaign, you must have your hands full. Thanks for taking pretend time for this make-believe interview.

REED: No problem whatsoever. If my endorsement changes again, I’ll be back in touch! •

High-Intensity Lasers, Not Low-Level

It is puzzling to me why Mr. John Sullivan would write, and the Ithaca Times would print a defamatory letter in the March 9 issue, without first checking their facts. Mr. Sullivan is talking about lowlevel laser therapy (LLLT) which is a very different class of laser technology. As stated in the March 2, 2016 article, Dr. McMaster uses High Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT), not LLLT. HILT uses significantly higher energy and penetrates more deeply into the body. A quick search of research revealed no less than four recent controlled studies in humans showing that HILT is effective 6

compared to placebo. These studies were found in PubMed.gov where they describe treatment of low back pain (July 2014), chronic neck pain (Feb 2016), knee arthritis (July 2014), and post-mastectomy pain syndrome (Aug 2015). There are other clinical studies going back years that demonstrate the effectiveness of HILT. It would be prudent for both Sullivan and the Ithaca Times to issue a retraction and an apology for needlessly defaming Dr. McMaster (no “s” on the end). I would also add that a health insurance company’s policy is hardly reliable when it comes to continued on page 12

Addressing Dislocation O ne of the goals in Plan Ithaca, the city’s comprehensive plan, is that Ithaca will have an adequate supply of “safe, accessible, and affordable housing available to all residents, regardless of their life circumstances or special needs.” The city will be home to a range of housing options, including different levels of affordability and housing types, in each neighborhood.

The plan goes further, stating that “new residential units will be compatible with the essential character of established neighborhoods, in coordination with the goals of the Land Use chapter” of Plan Ithaca. Phase two of the Kirby Edmonds comprehensive plan process is to prepare a housing strategy to increase housing supply and decrease housing costs.

These goals reflect what a lot of city residents said was important to them, and I don’t think that there is anyone who can reasonably disagree with these goals given the low vacancy rate in the city of Ithaca and the high cost of housing that are a result of a complex array of factors that no one sector of our economy, particularly the city government, can control.

One problem that requires our immediate collective attention is that this planning process, even if it is wildly successful, will take time to achieve. There are people, particularly in the low- to moderate-income brackets, who are being displaced right now because of high rents, increasing property taxes, or—as in the case of recent planned development in the block on the corner of State and Meadow streets—because of redevelopment and the lack of protection for tenants who have month-to-month leasing arrangements.

While it is not clear if anyone actually knows the scale of the displacement that is occurring, anyone who has real relationships with the people being displaced is aware of the incredible stress this places on individuals, their families, and the children who have to adjust to new school districts.

For people at the lower end of the income scale, even if they find more affordable housing, this displacement often both disrupts social connections and leads to higher costs for almost everything else a family needs, including food, transportation, and sometimes childcare as well.

As long as we as a community understand this to be an individual problem for the individual families to solve on their own, by the time we have actually increased housing stock to the levels needed, the damage will already have been done to the fabric of our

If we wish to have a different outcome from where this trend of displacement is taking us, I think there are several things that will be required. One is an immediate assessment of the scale of displacement taking place. While this may not be an easy task to accomplish, I think it does fall under the purview of the county and city planning departments and is something that could possibly be done with a grad assistant and a few interns.

Second, we probably need a clearinghouse where people who are being displaced or are about to be displaced can get information on what housing (however limited) is available or could be made available.

Third, if we can educate landlords about the urgency of this situation, along with information about the scale of displacement that is happening, we might be able to create housing options that under current circumstances are not available to people being displaced.

Fourth, while Plan Ithaca envisions neighborhoods with a mix of housing options, we’ve already seen negative reactions to development that promotes this. A recent example is the opposition to the 210 Hancock Street project that Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services is developing. While the project is underway, the vocal opposition that emerged should raise awareness of the importance of addressing concerns that people have in existing neighborhoods about the changes that such development projects may have. This means raising our capacity as a community to have frank conversations about privilege, whether rooted in class or race, and being steadfast in our collective commitment to create real equity in the city of Ithaca and all of its neighborhoods.

Some other strategies and tools we might be able to use to make it possible for low-income residents to avoid displacement might include but are certainly not limited to: • raising the minimum wage to a living wage so that working families can more easily afford to stay in the community; • establish community land trusts along the waterfront or Southwest Park lands to prevent real estate speculation and control prices over the long term; • property-tax reductions for lowincome seniors so they can age in place; • stabilization vouchers for long-time continued on page 11

Ithacans recall the experience that changed their lives

Peace Corps Values

arch 1 was the 55th anniversary of the founding of the Peace Corps. Ithaca is reputed to have the highest per capita concentration of former Peace Corps volunteers. We contacted Annie Pease, Cornell’s on campus Peace Corps coordinator and asked us if she knew how we could contact members of this community. We wanted to ask them how their service had affected what they had done in their professional lives.

Pease posted our inquiry to the local listserv for the Peace Corps community and we immediately got a flurry of responses from some fascinating people.

This is only a small portion of them and we’d like to thank everyone who got back to us.

Shari Haldeman Dominican Republic | 1997 to 1999

I

wanted to be in Africa,” said Shari Haldeman, “but I have severe asthma, and the Peace Corps has rules about being a certain number of miles from a major medical center [if you have a chronic medical condition].” The Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, is only two hours by air from Miami.

Haldeman had wanted to go to Africa because she had already lived there as a

child. Her parents had served in the Peace Corps in the 1960s in Sierra Leone and, when Haldeman was 5 years old, they returned to Africa to spend four years in Ethiopia. “When they visited me in the Dominican Republic,” Haldeman said, “they felt like my conditions were worse than theirs had been. They said they were more taken care of.”

Haldeman, who graduated from high school in Dryden, earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology at the University of Maryland and then worked in Washington, D.C. for Clean Water Action, a lobbying group. By the time she went overseas she was 29 years old, one of the older members of her cohort in the Dominican Republic.

“I was sent there to do forestry,” she said. “I was supposed to be doing grafting, but forestry was very male-dominated there and it was difficult for me coming in as a woman and without skills in that field.” While she didn’t have technical skills in foresty, Haldeman was rich in “soft skills.” She spoke proficient Spanish, a consequence of a year in Spain as a Rotary exchange student, and she was also open-minded and resourceful. “That’s what they [the Peace Corps] look for when they interview you,” she said, “more than specific skill sets.”

“Instead of fighting with the foresters I decided to work with children and women,” Haldeman said. She organized the building of nurseries for the children and encouraged women to plant gardens and set up roadside vegetable stands.

A year into her stay Haldeman caught dengue fever and got dangerously ill. When she recovered the Peace Corps told her she could go home.

“I told them I felt like I was home already,” she said. They let her stay. “What I really loved was reaching that moment when walking up a dirt path to go home feels the same as commuting to work in a car. I didn’t feel like a stranger anymore.

When you get to be proficient in the language and develop routines with people, it starts to go quickly after that.”

Haldeman’s last project was to build wells. The women in her village walked a mile to get drinking water and that water wasn’t particularly clean. In order to do this she worked with a French non-governmental organization and also got funding from the First Presbyterian Church in Ithaca. They built three wells a r c h

while she was there and continued to drill more after she left.

Upon her return to Ithaca Haldeman went to work for Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Urban Outreach program, which runs after-school programs in West Village, Southside, and Northside. She located foreign women living in Ithaca and got them to share their culture with young Ithacans. “We did projects that involved cooking, music, and art,” said Haldeman.

“It was an opportunity for me to be creative and autonomous, like I had been in the Peace Corps.”

She worked for the Extension for seven years, did a 13-month master’s degree at Ithaca College to get her teaching certification, and now teaches first and second grade at Enfield Elementary School.

Ken Schlather The Philippines | 1981 to 1984

M

y sister recently sent me an autobiography that I wrote in the fifth grade,” said Ken Schlather, the executive director of the Tompkins County Cornell Cooperative Extension.

“In it I said that I wanted to graduate from college and go into the Peace Corps. I didn’t remember that at all.” Schlather had been raised with the idea of giving back. In his ideal of service Schlather had been attracted to the prospect of learning a language well enough to be fully immersed in another culture.

He graduated from Utah State University with a degree in agriculture, applied to the Peace Corps successfully, but turned down an assignment to Nepal, and instead moved to Ithaca to farm. The soil on Mount Pleasant was not good and the farming was difficult. He accepted a second assignment further east.

From the moment he got off the plane in the Philippines, Schlather knew that he did not want to be there. His preliminary training took place near a hot springs and a highway, both of which sent noxious fumes across the compound. “The food was terrible,” he said. “Later the Filipino staff told me that it was worst food they’d ever tasted.”

When he arrived on the island of Panay in the center of the archipelago and began an agroforestry project, he could see immediately that it would take longer than two years to get anything meaningful accomplished.

In his second week there a starving child died in his hands. He watched as the local leadership emigrated en masse to find better prospects abroad. After four months on Panay he still felt alienated and unhappy.

His host family contacted a priest who had lived in the U.S. He invited the Peace Corps volunteer to his seaside home. They went swimming in the warm ocean, drinking cold beer while a servant waited on them.

“Could you do this back home?” the priest asked him.

“Something flipped for me then,” said Schlather. He helped to start a “people’s forest,” where landless barrio residents could get long-term leases if they agreed to plant trees. He helped 55 families get 25year leases. They could grow two rice crops a year and plant field crops like corn, sweet potatoes and forest crops like ginger. They could get beyond subsistence to grow food for market. The traditional alternative had been sharecropping, which had kept them impoverished.

Schlather moved on to animal husbandry. Another traditional arrangement on Panay was for a rich person to purchase a piglet and have a poor person raise it. They would then split the proceeds when the fattened pig was sold. But there weren’t enough rich people around willing to foot the initial bill, even though the cost was not great.

Schlather himself was able to purchase a pig. “I started with one guy,” he recalled, “but I told him, ‘I want to work with you to raise it.’ I learned about raising pigs using local vegetation. We did it, and it grew

Schlather used the proceeds to buy more pigs. “By the time I left [Panay] I owned 80 pigs,” said Schlather, “and three or four water buffalo and a cow.”

His takeaway from his sojourn in the Philippines was that it was best to teach people within their existing social and economic systems to do something better than they had been doing it.

Schlather stayed on in the Philippines as a Peace Corps trainer and working in rice research. He then moved on to India to do dry-land agriculture and to apply to grad school at Cornell. He did a master’s degree in crop science and then a Ph.D. in soil science, which took him back to the developing world.

His dissertation looked at use of “green manures” in Costa Rica. “I was looking at nutrient cycling,” Schlather said, “the way it works in a forest versus a field system. We were growing indigenous legumes in a way that mimicked the forest system.” It worked well because most of the diseases that afflict beans come from growing them on bare soil.

He stayed in Central and South America for 15 years, returning to Ithaca in 2003 to take his present job at Cooperative Extension.

David Flaten Guatemala | 1987 to 1990

D

avid Flaten’s father is a retired social worker and Flaten was raised to think of what it would be

like to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes.

When he finished college at a small liberal arts school in Minnesota, he was looking to do that kind of walking.

“My undergraduate mentor told me that he wouldn’t write me a letter of reference for a year after I graduated,” said Flaten. “He told me, ‘You’ve got to do something before you go to graduate school. You’re basically a middle-class white kid from a small farm town on the edge of the prairie.’”

He applied to the Peace Corps and told them he would like to stay in the Western Hemisphere.“The Peace Corps was looking for the open-mindedness that you associate with a liberal arts education,” he said. “Then they would just find something for them.”

Flaten had started college as a biology major. Because he knew something about entomology and botany, he was assigned to a beekeeping project in the Altiplano of Guatemala. Africanized bees had swept through the region during the 1980s and Flaten was initially assigned to work with local beekeepers, but many of them had simply dropped out of the business when forced to deal with aggressive swarms.

While he was still working with beekeepers Flaten traveled out to a remote village for a meeting. When it ended he found that he had been abandoned.

“People had been lying to me and I ended up in the middle of nowhere, sleeping overnight in a haystack,” he said. “I was angry, but then I told myself, ‘This is the way it goes. Just wake up and start over.’”

With beekeeping a bust, Flaten was encouraged to start giving presentations on a variety of topics. “At first I said, ‘I don’t see this in my job description,’” he recalled, “but a senior volunteer told me, ‘You don’t have one. Your job is to go out there and work.’”

His new work was a revelation. “I got the bug for education,” he said. “The rural community was underserved by the government, so we did educational outreach through these charla [chats].”

His Guatemalan counterpart would make the contacts and then they’d travel to a small village to talk about topics like fish farming, digging latrines, rabies vaccines, and how to give vitamins to cattle.

Flaten also learned not to force information on people. Sometimes he

found that he got more done by going down to the local bodega, drinking a soda, and passing the time talking to the local farmers. “I learned,” he said, “that it was not the grand things, but the simple human things that matter.”

While he was in Guatemala, Flaten was accepted into a graduate program in history at Fordham. Returning home in the winter of 1990, he did odd jobs in his hometown of St. Peter, Minnesota until moving to the Bronx at the end of the summer. He is now a history professor at Tompkins-Cortland Community College, teaching the Western civilization curriculum.

“I have brought students down to Guatemala three times,” Flaten said, “and showed them where I used to live and introduced them to my former colleagues.

But now we go to Colombia every year because we have a relationship with a school in Cali. We go to the Amazon, the Andes, and the Caribbean coast, all the biological zones. I do this with another professor who teaches the students about the climate and the biology, and then my job is to put the people into it.”

Edna Brown Kenya | 1989 to 1991

E

dna Brown served as a small business advisor in Kenya.

“I worked with my Kenyan counterparts,” said Brown, “who were called ‘community development assistants,’ to teach basic business skills to women’s groups. I also taught basic business and marketing in local polytechnic institutes and at a deaf school. I helped write a grant for USAID money to fund a women’s group addition of a boarding facility to a local school that taught children with special needs.”

There were some frightening events.

“The hardest, scariest experiences were being robbed of my backpack by men who had been drinking,” Brown recalled, “and being in an accident while riding in a public van about my fifth month in the

country. The driver of the van was killed, and I walked away with a few cuts. I went to Nairobi for medical attention and counseling so I could get back in public vehicles and complete my service.”

But Brown did get to see her work bear fruit. “The high point [of my service] was listening to my Kenyan coworkers teach what I had been teaching the women’s groups before I left,” she said.

“The Peace Corps philosophy is really to share skills with others so you are no longer needed. I felt like my co-workers had learned enough from me that they could carry on the work.

“The most pleasurable part was getting to know Kenyans,” Brown said.

“I was really welcomed and treated well. People who had very little were so generous with me. So the biggest lesson I learned was that you can have little but still be very giving.”

Some Peace Corps volunteers are able to return to their host country, and some, for various reasons aren’t able to. “I continued on page 10

haven’t returned to Kenya to visit,” Brown said, “mostly due to job and family responsibilities. Kenya has had some turbulent politics in the past two decades.

I’d wanted to make sure it was relatively safe before I planned a return trip, but I would love to go back someday.”

The Peace Corps altered the trajectory of Brown’s life. “I was an IBM marketing representative in D.C. before my Peace Corps service,” she said. “I was making great money, but I hated my job. I looked in the Washington Post want ads section and everything that looked interesting to me required an

MSW degree. I applied to Peace Corps, which really, in hindsight, was a perfect transition for me. Though I went as a business advisor, I got to work with women and children through the Kenyan Department of Social Services.”

Brown applied to grad school while in Kenya and was accepted in Columbia University’s School of Social Work. “I have worked as a social worker in public schools and as a parent educator,” she said. “I work as a school social worker at BJM Elementary and still teach parenting through Tompkins County Cornell Cooperative Extension.”

y then-husband and I were in Natal, in northeastern Brazil,” said Jane Brown of her Peace Corps service, “until recently one of the poorest places on earth. There were seven volunteers assigned to work in community development and education, in a brand new housing development. People thought we came with the houses! I worked establishing a kind of pre-K program and training some young teenage girls to teach the pre-K. At that time you couldn’t get into first grade unless you could read and write first, so there was a real need for early education. My salary back home, as a teacher in Enfield, would have paid for every teacher in the state!”

Mead and her husband both had amoebic and bacillary dysentery and almost died. They only survived because the Peace Corps director came through for his six-month visit, and had the doctor with him.

She remembers being gratified at the success of her project. “One of the girls we were closest to,” said Mead, “ended up becoming a secondary school teacher; she was quite successful.”

Mead loved Brazil. “We were in this little house,” she recalled, “the whole house was probably the size of my kitchen. That was for two of us, and next door they had 11 people. They used to really worry we were lonely.” The isolation of Natal in the late 1960s was extreme. Mead said that one of her neighbors didn’t know any other language but Portugese and he didn’t understand why she and her husband spoke poorly. “He thought we were stupid,” she said.

Mead found living in another country and being part of the community to be special. “The Brazilians are wonderful people, beautiful; every shade, every skin color,” she said, “and kind.

Although Mead has never returned to Brazil, her ex-husband does and he keeps her posted on the ongoing evolution of the country, now an economic powerhouse on par with China, India, and Russia.

Her time in the Peace Corps made her look at her life differently. “The big thing about it is, it made me grateful for being an American” she said. “I did not appreciate my life in this country at all until I lived in the Third World surrounded by abject poverty. It made things so clear: when the infant mortality rate is 80 percent in the first year, you understand why you have to have clean water. When you see it, it puts it in perspective.”

She set up educational programs in Brazil and it would guide her later career choice. “I ended up a teacher,” Mead said, “and chose to work with the most disadvantaged kids. It was wonderful for me to have such a humbling experience at such a young age, to be humbled by the joy, strength, and generosity of people who have so little.”§

27th Home & Garden Show at TC3

T

he 27th Annual Tompkins/Cortland Home & Garden Show is slated for April 2 and 3 at the Tompkins Cortland County College (TC3) Field House and, this year, the event hopes to inspire its guests with ideas.

“This is the home and garden show,” Green Home Heroes Owner Dave Astorina said. “It’s been going on for 27 years now. It brings together some of the best builders and remodelers in the area so that people thinking about doing projects can come in and have casual conversations rather than being in the high pressure situation of going into someone’s office and formally requesting a quote, or something like that. They can see some examples of what people do, and have an easy conversation. Part of the way the home show works is that it’s a really fun environment.”

Astorina, who organized the event, is particularly excited for some new aspects to this year’s rendition.

“We are changing it up a little bit this year,” he noted, “to make it a really fun way to spend the day. We’ll have wine and food pairings. If you haven’t heard of this, or haven’t tried it – you really should. It’s like alchemy. It’s being run by Dr. Laura Winter Falk of Experience the Finger Lakes. It’s a $10 fee. She pairs local Finger Lakes wines and beers with local food.

The thing that’s funny about it is you get completely different flavors in your mouth depending on the combination at hand – it’s wild. Coltivare will also be here doing food demos, as well as another local chef.”

When asked who should be interested in making the trip out to TC3 for the event, Astorina said it could be anyone who is looking to make changes to their home to homeowners hoping to be inspired about making changes to their home. He didn’t want to put a limit on who might find value in the event, as he is confident the weekend will have a little something for everyone.

“The people that should be interested in this event,” he said, “are homeowners, people looking to do projects this summer, people that want to have a good day out, people who aren’t aware about what the community has to offer in terms of home stuff.

People can talk to all different types of vendors and really get a feel for who they’d like to work with, or what different products are out there.”

Program at GIAC. “I was hired in November 2013 to help a terrific community advisory board create and administer GIAC’s Hospitality Employment Training Program,” she said. “We began the program two months later. Because the committee members are themselves experts in all aspects of the program, they were able to connect this program to all the trainers we need to fully prepare community members to be valued employees.”

Nagiane’s advisory board has expertise in conflict resolution (Training for

Change), workforce development (Diane Bradac at Tompkins Workforce New York Career Center; Department of Labor; restaurant expertise from senior staff from the renowned Moosewood restaurant; and Cornell’s elite Statler Hotel), among other industry heavy hitters.

“With our committee,” said Nagiane, “we help our participants prepare for a successful career working in restaurants, hotels, spas, and tourism.

Our training program teaches applicants to write resumés, learn business etiquette, networking, practice interviewing [Diane Bradac’s staff play the role of prospective employers]. This course provides whatever the participant needs to get the job of the participant’s dreams, whether it is a formal suit that fits perfectly or having their hair styled. One participant signed up for Red Bell Driving School, since he needed to drive for work.

When I arrived at Cornell I realized that, coming from a lower-income neighborhood, I had not been exposed to some of the etiquette I needed to navigate professional venues. That experience informs my work with participants who may feel they are not fully prepared to make that transition. I know what it’s like to be the only person in the room who doesn’t know “the rules.” I’ve been there, so I understand.

I have always had a strong internal compass. I knew what I was supposed to be doing. I truly believe the universe only gives one what one can handle. This is what I’m supposed to be doing. GIAC is the right place for me to be right now.

Here at GIAC I have the opportunity to apply what I have studied and what I have learned in my work. I can teach and guide and, with other colleagues, help people in our program find a positive employment path and succeed.

As much as Nagiane and Jorge are valued and loved in Ithaca, their adopted community, they cannot be separated from their roots. Once a month they pack the car and head home to visit their two families in Union City. “We feel as if we have joint custody with my grandmother-in-law [GIL] of her cat Luna,” Nagiane said. “My dear GIL adopted Luna when her children had grown up and moved out. Now when my in-laws travel Luna comes back home with us to Ithaca. We say she is visiting her spa. When she needs her annual checkup Luna stays the month with us and has her medical appointments with Jorge and vacations in our home in Ithaca.”

Last summer Jorge and Nagiane took their annual vacation abroad, each year exploring a new region. This year in France Nagiane received an unexpected degree of scrutiny.

“When I wear the head scarf,” she explained, “I am no longer the privileged child born in America. I am different. I am aware now that, whether I like it or not, because I am Muslim I am a role model for Muslims.”

Nagiane continued, “We have always appreciated Ithaca. Here we feel comfortable and we are free to be ourselves.

This year we understand on a deeper level how fulfilling it is to live in a community where we are accepted for who we are. …

Like the motto here at GIAC, here in Ithaca, I am ‘free to be me.’ Here we are simply Nagiane and Jorge, and that is just fine.” •

A Long Look at Lacrosse The IC coach has built a solid program

W

hen a college lacrosse coach has a successful and highly respected high school program “right down the road,” he would be wise to make an effort to nurture his relationship with the high school’s coach. After all, the recruiting process is made easier when an athlete already knows the town and the program, so a good relationship between the coaches can help to make the transition even smoother.

The bad news: The relationship between Ithaca College lacrosse coach Jeff Long and Ithaca High coach Frank Welch started off with some bad blood and resentment. The good news: That was a long time ago.

“I grew up in Irondequoit [next to Rochester],” Long said, “and there was some fierce competition with Ithaca.” He laughed and added, “That was in about 1971.”

A lot of changed since then, and now Long calls Welch “one of the best coaches I know… in fact, he’s probably in the top five in the country.” Long also stated, “Frank is always very honest with his players, very realistic, and they come in—to the collegiate level—with a very high level of preparation.”

This season, the Bombers’ roster featured three Ithaca High alums, and I asked Long when that was last the case. He thought back and said, “Well… I think it was when Tim Little, Hodari Martin and Brad Nelson played. That was a while ago.

Those guys are all adults with kids of their own now, and I think they all live in the area.”

This year, Winston Wenham, Grant Osadchey and Eli Gobrecht all suit up for Ithaca College, and their longtime chemistry and friendship serves the program well. According to Long, “Eli is one of the best defenders in the country, and he and Winston are playing right next to each other for 60 minutes a game. Grant is our face-off guy, and his job is to get us the ball. They’re all really good kids, and like I said, Frank’s kids come in ready.”

The Bombers are just getting into their conference schedule, and things started off well with an 18-4 thumping of Utica in the Empire 8 opener. The win ran the Bombers’ record to 7-1 as they enter what Long called “the heart of the competition.” He said, “We’re still not at full strength. We have been banged up, and we have been able to give a lot of young players a lot of time on the field. We will now find out what we’re all about.”

The “heart of the competition” includes upcoming games against SUNY Cortland, Stevens, Nazareth and St. John

Fisher, and having the team at full strength will be crucial.

• • • When Long looks back over the years he has known Welch, he realizes that the two have really been around for some time. Long is now in his 29th season as the Bombers’ coach, and Welch is coming up on 40 years at the helm of the Little Red’s program. After graduating from Irondequoit, Long went to the U.S. Naval Academy and was an All-American while there. As a college player, Long was a three-time All-American, and he remains Navy’s career points and assists leader and played on four NCAA playoff teams. He graduated in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in political science, and he played on the U.S. national lacrosse teams in 1978 and 1986.

Long took over the Ithaca College program in 1988, got the struggling team into the NCAA playoffs four years later, and since then has amassed a record of 286-146. He was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2009,

the Ithaca College Hall of Fame in 2010, and he has been the Empire 8 Coach of the Year five times.

The coach is grateful to have such a longstanding relationship with Welch, and he’s grateful to have players from such a quality program. Teaching about whole food cooking

F

or me, the first bout of vegetarianism began in high school. I was reading Zen Flesh, Zen Bones by Paul Reps; I had distributed a hundred postcards to my friends to protest baby seal slaughter, and I had marched against nuclear war and nuclear waste. In the cause of being a better person and not adding to the world’s evil, I regularly ate a boiled grain concoction— entirely sans sucre—for one or two meals a day. It looked like horse feed, as my brother commented, and tasted like—well, by the time one finished chewing it, one’s jaws were so tired it would be hard to say just what that flavor was.

For my 15th birthday, my mother bought me the Moosewood Cookbook. Moral: you don’t have to grind your way through a bowl of tree bark every day to be kind to animals.

Moral number two: Ithaca is more than an island in The Odyssey.

Priscilla Timberlake and Lewis Freedman, authors of The Great Life Cookbook, now in its second printing, have been spreading the word about plant-based diets for decades, with a unique teaching technique that goes right to the core of the matter: every Friday night for 20 years, Priscilla and Lewis have hosted an open dinner for their friends and their friends’ friends to come and try an all-plant meal.

into the age of social media: ABC Café, a worker-owned vegetarian cooperative on Stewart Avenue, and Cabbagetown Café, a block above it on Eddy Street. Although Moosewood put Ithaca on the map for vegetarian cuisine, these two restaurants were equally loved by locals. I can still remember the revelation of Cabbagetown’s cashew chili—nutty, filling, and spicy—and the controlled chaos of ABC at dinnertime.

Timberlake was a partner at the ABC Café, and Freedman was involved with Cabbagetown.

Freedman, a registered dietitian, now works with the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutritional Studies. He teaches yoga and stress management at Cornell, where Timberlake also teaches mindfulness and meditation.

On a recent Friday, we entered the enclosed porch/sun room/coat room of their house in Brooktondale to find tables set with clean, un-ironed table cloths, windows steamed by the warmth of a wood stove, and around 20 people looking for places to sit and introducing themselves to each other. We chose a spot in T

Harmony and Creation NYS Baroque introduces star violinist

O

ur premier early music ensemble, New York State Baroque, closes its season with a string orchestra concert featuring a sparkling violinist, Elizabeth Wallfisch, on Saturday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m., in Ithaca’s Unitarian Church. The program, called “Libby’s Four Seasons,” will also be sparkling, with suites by Telemann, Schmelzer, and Biber, and culminating with an eternally popular Vivaldi work. A pre-performance talk will take place at 6:45 p.m.

Wallfisch, known to friends and colleagues as Libby—hence the title—was born in Australia. Her home base today is London. She is admired for her virtuosity and impeccable musicianship, and especially for a daring and spontaneous approach to performance. NYS Baroque’s artistic director Deborah Fox said, “I am always thrilled to play with her. It’s all about the music. She loves to play the violin; she comes from a long line of great musicians, and it’s just in her.” They first met at the Carmel Festival in California in the early 2000s, and this weekend marks Wallfisch’s fifth appearance with Fox’s Pegasus Early Music ensemble in Rochester. It’s her first visit to Ithaca, however.

Wallfisch is a select group—all baroque and period-instrument specialists—and includes familiar faces besides Fox, who is playing theorbo and baroque guitar.

Swedish-born Boel Gidholm from Rochester, a frequent performer, performs on violin and viola, while harpsichordist Michael Beattie, also a conductor, was part of the previous NYS Baroque concert.

Violist Paul Miller, who last year finished a postdoctoral fellowship at Cornell, where he led the baroque orchestra, and now is visiting assistant professor of music theory at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, played the viola d’amore in the February 2015 concert. With them are violinist Mary Riccardi, who studied with Monika Huggitt in Bremen and now resides in Michigan; cellist Christopher Haritatos, a member of the Rochester Philharmonic since 2009 and cellist of the baroque ensemble Fiortura; and Joëlle Morton, a specialist on lowerregister baroque strings, who teaches at the University of Toronto and directs the Scaramella chamber series there.

The suites by Telemann, Schmelzer, and Biber are all programmatic, and “there is a lot of dance music, which may or may not be danced to,” Fox said. Telemann

Film festival offers a plethora of excitement

LEFF is here for another year. That is, the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival (FLEFF) is in full swing this week. Events, seminars, and screenings have been happening at Ithaca College since Monday, and starting on Thursday, March 31, screenings with visiting filmmakers, local notables, and live music start at Cinemapolis, located at 120 E Green St. Films and events are staggered throughout the weekend, but some will be repeated, so you might just be able to see everything. I wasn’t able to preview any of the films that FLEFF is screening, so consider this more of a preview than a review. If nothing else, I hope to whet your appetite for what looks to be a weekend of documentaries of staggering variety and interests. There are so many films playing that there’s no way to cover everything. See the whole schedule at ithaca.edu/fleff.

screenings of Dear President Obama (1 p.m., Saturday, April 2), Jon Bowermaster’s new anti-fracking film, if for no other reason than to spend time with Jeff Claus and the rest of the Horse Flies, who have provided new music for Bowermaster’s film, along with fellow Ithacans Steve Selin and Ben Gould. Bowermaster will also be in attendance to introduce and discuss the film. It’s narrated by Academy Award winner Mark Ruffalo and includes important fracking incidents from more than 20 states.

The film I’m most looking forward to is Jon Nealan‘s Here Come the Videofreex (8:30 p.m., Friday, April 1). When Sony first introduced the portapak video unit in the late ‘60s, filmmakers like Francis Coppola bought them, believing that the ability for anyone to make their own television media would spark a great revolution. wrote “a ton of them” and this particular overture has seven movements that basically make up a violin concerto. Most are “sweet and fun and engaging,” like background music.

The work by Schmelzer, the first non-Italian violin virtuoso (the music is “not easy”), is called Fechtschule (“The Fencing School’), and might have been meant for a staged dance spectacle. There is a lot of “feinting and saber-slashing,” and the final Bader Aria suggests the place where the wounds were dressed.

Biber, best known for serious, weighty, sacred sonatas—here presents a story called “Battalia.”

We hear martial music, trumpets blaring, and a lot of dissolute soldiers wandering around, everyone with the same tune but no one together. The march has the band coming in—it’s warlike—but totally disorganized, with a final chord made up of the notes D A F E G B G E. The last movement, a lament for the wounded soldier, is “short, sweet, fun, and slightly comical.”

Fox and Wallfisch decided together to do Vivaldi’s Quattro Stagione, four concertos for solo violin. The work is heard everywhere, much loved, but often maligned, Fox suggested, because of bad performances. This time, “to hear Libby will give everyone a different perspective.” Four sonnets, describing each season—possibly written by Vivaldi, no one knows for sure—were published at the beginning of the solo part. They will be in the program.

places where the composer actually wrote in some of the words, accounts of scenes or actions that the music describes. The concertos—virtuosic works for the solo violin, for everyone, Fox added—are part of Vivaldi’s Opus 8, twelve concertos he called the contest between harmony and invention.

The Dream of Success

Professor’s new book aims at the college experience

By Bil l C h ai s son How to Succeed in College and Beyond: the Art of Learning (Wiley/Blackwell)

chapter “How to Prepare for College,” he writes, “Before choosing a college, students need to consider why they want to go to college and what they expect to get out of the experience.” He then suggests that his reader “assess what programs have value for him or her”; are they looking to gather job skills, preparing for graduate school, or interested in the liberal arts?

Schwarz wants students to have a career goal in mind in high school, even if they change their minds later, and tells them they need to work on time management and disciplined study habits.

This sort of thing goes on for several pages.

After a while it begins to remind one of the old Steve Martin joke: “How do you

aniel Schwarz has been a professor of English for 47 years, spending most of those years at Cornell University, but also putting in time as a visiting professor at three different state universities. He “consulted with hundreds of students and scores of colleagues” to write this book, which is a sort of compendium of advice and information from the wisest uncle you’ve ever had.

Schwarz’s style is the stringing together of simple declarative sentences; he doesn’t beat around the bush or trade in ambiguity. On the first page of the

The chapters in Part I, which advise young people on what to focus on in high school and how to fill out applications to colleges, seems aimed squarely at middleclass folks who will be helped out by having a checklist of dos and don’ts, a timetable for get done what ought to be done, and assurance in the form of quotations from the likes US News & World Report and the many students with whom Schwarz has corresponded. Readers from less privileged backgrounds will need to seek further advice from someone like a guidance counselor (or whatever Internet sites they choose to trust) to explain, for example, what the liberal arts might be.

Part II begins with four chapters that deal with your four years in college and consist of numbered lists of suggestions. For example, “If you are in the wrong program, think about changing it rather than investing even more time and energy in that program.” There is something

refreshingly direct and unambivalent about statements like this. It would be a mistake to think of it as expressing the obvious.

As a former college professor I can attest to the fact that some sophomores can get stuck in a proverbial hall of mirrors, unable to see their way out of a major that they have no liking or aptitude for. Schwarz, interestingly, does not call parents onto the carpet in this context. In my experience parents’ expectations can have a paralyzing, misery-making effect on students. That would perhaps be an entirely different book, addressed to parents (although he does get to this topic in Chapter 12).

Part III is where things get really interesting, even to the non-student reader.

Schwarz offers advice in successive chapters in how to choose your classes (another numbered list), whether you should join the Greek system, and a once-over that might be summarized as “how to grow up.”

His chapter addressed to parents might be summed up as “how not to be a helicopter.”

Schwarz becomes increasingly philosophical as he proceeds beyond college. Here in 2016 he is forced to defend the humanities in the face of the full-court press of the STEM offense. More power to him. As a former academic scientist with an undergraduate degree in English, I will testify to the increasing rarity of a scientist who can write clearly, speak well in public, make connections across disciplines via use of basic rules of analysis and synthesis. The “silo-ing” effect has become extreme.

He concludes with two chapters that are downright fascinating. Schwarz has been a professor since 1968; he has either been a student or a teacher through an uproarious period in American history during which the academy was changed utterly. He would seem to prefer continuity over revolution, and he is hopeful about the future. • Schwarz will be at Buffalo Street Books on April 9 at 3 p.m.

The night’s menu started with cream of squash soup, which can be found in the cookbook for the month of October. Dishes are cooked without oils, without gluten, and without animal products: blanched, baked, boiled, pressed, simmered, steamed, or water sautéed. “For the pressed salad,” Lewis explained, “we cut the vegetables into strips and salt them with sea salt, then press them under a plate for several hours. Then, wash the salt off; it makes a nice, crisp salad. It’s raw and very digestible.”

After the squash soup, which was “creamy,” sweet, and filling, came the main plate. In the cooking philosophy at work here, each meal and each plate is full and balanced. “Each day, eat from all parts of the plant, and every color of the rainbow,” Lewis quoted. We have yellow baked polenta; black beans and onions; greens with sunflower seed tangerine dressing; the green pressed salad; arame and root vegetables—parsnips and carrots; short grain brown rice; daikon pickle. Thus: sour, salty, pungent, sweet, and bitter—five flavor groups, so the meal tastes complete and satisfying. Leaves, seeds, roots, and fruits, and most of it local.

“We’re very lucky to have Cayuga Grains’ black beans,” said Priscilla, “from right down the road in Brooktondale.” To round out the flavors of the dishes, Priscilla commonly adds different ingredients from Asian cooking: umeboshi plum paste, sea salt, agar-agar flakes and other flavor and digestion helpers. The “Apprentice’s Guide” section of The Great Life Cookbook provides a list of ten of these uncommon ingredients, and a primer on kitchen tools, cooking styles, and such things as a beginner’s guide to sea vegetables.

Harold Shultz, who has been a regular Friday diner for years, said he eats mostly raw foods on the other days of the week.

“Most people consume too much fat and protein,” said Shultz. “Even vegans.”

Said Shultz, “Both of my parents died young; my mother was 56, and my father was 60. Growing up, I had the worst diet imaginable. When my father died, I changed my diet.” Shultz recommended reading T. Colin Campbell’s The China Study, which measured cancer trends and national diets. Campell, who grew up on a dairy farm, approached diet from a scientific point of view and was swayed by his own results, even though they were not what he expected. Several decades of research led to The China Study, and Campbell is now head of the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies at Cornell, where Freedman works.

Campbell, it turns out, is the reason this dinner is billed “whole-foods plantbased,” rather than “vegan” or “vegetarian.”

Noting the difficulty the scientific community has had in accepting the rationale for a plant-based diet, Campbell chose a more exact term. Vegans and vegetarians often base their diet on moral and ethical considerations, such as preserving the environment and not being

cruel to animals. However, that doesn’t mean their diet is healthy: a vegetarian could subsist on potato chips, donuts, and ramen noodles, for instance. Campbell writes, “A Whole Foods Plant Based diet is better described as a ‘dietary lifestyle’ not a ‘diet’ because of the vast and very important interplay of food, exercise, personal philosophy and environment … a vast majority of vegetarians still use copious amounts of dairy products, sometimes also fish and eggs, while most vegans use nutritionally compromised plant-based diets high in added fat, sugar and processed foods.” (T. dinner without oils and added fats. As gluten intolerance has become an issue for many people, they have made that change in the dinners as well. One of our neighbors across the table needs a gluten-free diet, and this meal provides her with a rare opportunity to eat out.

“It’s not only beautiful, but it’s vegan, so you can eat a lot,” said Gwen, sitting next to me, although I was full before my plate was empty. As we waited for dessert— lemon almond blackberry tart—a weekly ritual began. Priscilla carried out the first slice of the tart with a lit candle on it, and everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to BeyLing, who was sitting at our table.

There turned out to be four more people who had just had a birthday, or were about to. One by one, we learned their

It was solemn, and fun, and calmly sweet; the renditions actually improved with each round, as the singers relaxed and enjoyed the ritual. The meal, said Priscilla, is not just about the food. Creating a sense of community, and giving good food to people, is about love. “I picked the blackberries with my own hands,” she said, smiling. “My daughter has had the Friday dinners her whole life; I feel so blessed to be able to have given her this experience.”

The artist, designer, and musician Kevin Dossinger, will be presenting a solo show of paintings. David Nutt of Why+The+Wires will be playing music during the reception. A box of wine will be on hand. The artworks are large (6 feet x 3.5 feet) paintings on canvases salvaged out of the Short Stop dumpster 10 years ago. The subject of the paintings concern the old buildings of Ithaca that have fallen to the wrecking ball under the Urban Renewal movement of the 60’s.

Dossinger’s paintings aim to celebrate the architecture the city has lost over the years - and to remind people not to take the buildings that we do have for granted. Once they are gone, they are gone forever.

A melting pot of musical stylings ranging from Spanish flamenco, Cuban rhythms, French Manouche Gypsy-Jazz, and Avant-Garde World music, the band Sultans of String manage to showcase the famed diversity of their home city, Toronto, ten-fold. Dazzling audiences across the globe, the band, led by the energetic Chris McKhool, invite listeners to experience exotic tapestries of ancient and mystical sounds, blowing minds with virtuosity and intricacy.

In between is the entire universe—sorta like the Truman Show, but a lot cloudier. You’ve already walked through the commons a half-dozen times, went to Angry Mom, went to Greenstar (DeWitt and West End), made the daily pilgrimage to Wegmans, did some work on your garden, read a little Dostoyevsky, then some Asimov—thought about going to Angry Mom again—considered going to Cinemapolis, but didn’t , and then walked home; beaten, confused, oblong, and trapped. Well, fuhgeddaboudit: here’s some music happenings to frequent this week to take your mind off things. At least you can drink whilst tapping your toes, and drinking has been known to change such dimensions towards rosier quadrants.
