Concert To Benefit Homeless This Week

E

ven as the weather warms currently, with brutal cold behind and ahead of us the city’s homeless are in constant need of assistance and shelter. With a little help from some of Ithaca’s youngest musicians, they’ll hopefully be able to get it.

Ithaca Talent Education School will be holding a six hour Marathon Concert this Friday, January 26 at First Baptist Church on North Cayuga Street in Ithaca. Proceeds from the concert, as well as the bake sale that accompanies it, will go to the Ithaca Rescue Missions.

ITE was founded in 1964 by Sandy and Joan Reuning-Hummel, inspired by a concert in Philadelphia held by Shinichi Suzuki, a Japanese musician and educator who innovated teaching children, younger than ever before, classical music on instruments like the violin, the viola or the cello.

Carrie Reuning-Hummel, the founder’s daughter, was one of the school’s first students and now serves as its directors. She compares the school’s methodology to teaching children music like they would normally be taught language, simply making it a part of a supportive daily environment.

ITE runs a few annual fundraisers and Reuning-Hummel said they wanted to avoid the events getting stale and tread into some unknown territory, which led them to the idea of a marathon concert; a way to show the versatility of their students as well as benefiting a worthy cause in the process.

“We want to integrate with the community, and we try to do something each year to give to a cause, so we just thought this was a cool idea to show the span of our school, that we could play for six hours and not run out of music,” she said.

At previous events, the school has been able to raise a few thousand dollars and predicts they will be able to make the same impact this time around. That type of money can go a long way for somewhere with limited resources, but that provides an important service, said Rescue Missions Director Richard Bennett.

“We are a small not for profit who depends on the support of our community,” Bennett wrote in an email. “An event like this will bring needed dollars to support our day to day operations as well as help share information about people in our community struggling with hunger and homelessness.”

Charity was another significant part of Suzuki’s teachings and philosophy, believing helping others was a crucial ingredient to someone’s overall makeup. The event will take place on the 20th anniversary of Suzuki’s, which was unintentional, but there will be a tribute to the school’s inspiration included in the program.

“We were concerned about the cold, it’s

just been so cold this winter,” Reuning-Hummel said. “So we’ve been thinking, ‘Gosh, where are these people sleeping?’ We’ve been talking to the kids about it a little bit, and they’ve been interested in this cause.”

This winter has indeed been a gauntlet from a temperature standpoint, particularly with temperatures early this month diving below zero overnight and only climbing to single-digits during the day. Pile several inches of snow on top of that, and the ramifications for the homeless are dramatic.

“The winter and the accompanied cold weather turns a bad situation (living outside) into a potentially dangerous one,” Bennett wrote. “It also can create additional challenges in needing and having to attain basic needs (food, blankets, socks, etc.) Certainly we see a dramatic increase in our shelter over

the winter, but also see increases in our food pantry and Day Center. This creates more need for food, hygiene products, blankets, pillows, etc.”

Reuning-Hummel is, obviously, confident the students will be able to pull off the musical portion of the evening. The only challenge, it seems, will be juggling fundraising with keeping dozens of kids, some as young as four years old, engaged as the night wears on.

“Hopefully, they’re not all going to be there for all six hours,” she said, with a cautiously optimistic laugh. “As we go later into the evening, it’ll just be the older kids, probably [...] Hopefully.”

overnor Cuomo pla ns to develop an action plan by this Spring to reduce sources of pollution that spark the algal blooms that closed portions of Cayuga Lake to swimming last summer, even threatening the popular Women Swimmin fundraiser for Hospicare.

But not everyone thinks the state’s ambitious timeframe, nor its relatively paltry financial contributions, are realistic in addressing the root of the problem.

“It’s absurd to suggest that a giant watershed can be assessed and that a comprehensive cleanup plan at a cost of $500,000 per lake can be adopted in three months,” said local environmental activist Walter Hang.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) on Cayuga Lake are not new. The colonies of algae that grow out of control and produce toxic or harmful effects on people, fish, birds and other animals were first spotted on Cayuga Lake in 1998, said State Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton (D-125).

Not all algal blooms are harmful.

But when f loating mats, scum and discolored water in shades of green, blue-green, yellow, brown or red blanket the lake’s surface, they can be harmful or toxic and should be avoided, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

Last summer, the DEC detected HABs on a dozen lakes across New York State including water bodies such as Skaneateles Lake, the primary source of drinking water for the City of Syracuse. In response, Governor Cuomo announced in December his plans to provide $65 million to address the problem with $500,000 going to support each lake’s action plan to reduce the pollution sources.

“I don’t know whether they are thinking that $65 million is the first installment,” said Lifton, noting that the contributing factors are difficult.

“Ninety days may not be long enough to put together a comprehensive feasibility study,” she said.

But Lifton appreciates that the governor is making the issue a priority. So does Hilary Lambert, Steward/ Executive Director of Cayuga Lake Watershed Network.

Debate On Race Lights Up ICSD’s Drama Department

inter began as it always did in t he Drama Department at Ithaca High School. The student-led oneact plays wrapped up final performances in December and the department, as always, began looking toward its big Spring production: a staging of Victor Hugo’s novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame, considered a seminal text on class as a determinant of one’s fate in 15th Century France.

T he c hoic e w a s one t h at delighted the local theater community. As one parent wrote in a letter to the play’s artistic directors, Robert Winans and Kristin Zaryski, it was “incredibly heartening” to see a play calling for a person of color to be cast as the female lead: the Romani gypsy, Esmeralda.

“Not only are there few roles spe c ia l ly w r it ten for you ng women of color,” the letter, written by Eliza VanCort, read, “but finding roles which pointedly and thoughtfully address the feeling of being an outcast, as Esmeralda does in her solo ‘God Help The Outcasts,’ is rare indeed. It’s 2017, and you have chosen a musical that reflects the rich diversity of the American experience. In a time when our nation is being torn apart by a divisive executive branch (and other factors) I simply can’t thank you enough for this timely, bold, thoughtful, and unifying choice. It couldn’t have come at a better time!”

And then the cast list came out with a talented – albeit white – actress in the lead.

Neighborhood’s Past

ehind lock and key (and an advanced security system) on the ground floor of the Gateway Commons building in Downtown Ithaca, dozens of mementos of a time long since past line steel shelves long since hidden from the general public.

Beneath a tarp in one corner of the room is an old church organ, in another a slatted wheelchair and, leaning up against the west wall, are several stained glass windows, crusted in dust and carefully positioned. While some of the objects in the room may seem insignificant elements (some of the antique tables and chairs, for instance, would need a practiced and informed eye to appreciate) these windows have a story going far beyond their age.

It was in the Spring of 1824 when the burgeoning community of Snyder Hill – named for Joseph Snyder, who donated much of the land on the hill for civic use – had grown to the point where they, as a sign of the strength of the community, formed their own congregation under the banner of the Free Will Baptist Church.

Meeting in a modest schoolhouse at the crossings of an old Iroquois path, the church, chartered with eight signatories and Elder Edward E. Dodge as pastor, was organized April 3. The growth of a church often mirrors the maturation of

gers of HABs – along with volunteer training of people to monitor and report HABs – need to come first and be a top priority for funding,” said Lambert in an email.

“No matter what the causes and triggers, farmers should not be allowing manure spills into our creeks and lake,” she added.

Storm water run-off, water leaving farms and properties on soils laced with fertilizer, non point source pollution and the impacts of Cornell’s lake source cooling project on the lake’s phosphorous levels (a project which has elicited some controversy in recent years from environmentalists in the community), all need to be considered as possible contributing factors, Lifton said.

a community and, as Snyder Hill grew, so did the church, eventually prompting the congregation to find a permanent home in a more modern structure across from the schoolhouse, which was completed in 1856.

It was a modest church, typical of those constructed at the time, but for the community, the new church signified a milestone, a statement of community pride: though few accounts remain outlining the church’s earliest days, those that exist paint a landscape of fond memories of a building bearing more meaning than a place to worship and break bread.

The church gained a large following and, by the early 20th century, as many as 150 souls might have been seen at a service of note, coming from corners of the county including Ithaca, Caroline Center, Danby and Bethel Grove. The little church had grown from a sign of community to a symbol of prestige, and as such deserved improvement and investment In 1905, a new organ was purchased and, ten years later, this small church would see a makeover that in the congregation’s eyes, provided affirmation that they had truly come unto their own.

According to minutes from the old church, on September 13, 1915 a large crowd was present for the unveiling of several stained glass windows, specially commissioned by church trustees from a glassmaker in New York City at the cost of $300 and inscribed with the names of those who gave the most to fund the venture: Snyder, Cornelius, Genung and English.

Though the structure remains,

these windows now locked away in a basement – beyond sparse writings on the church and its f lock – remain the only testament to the origins and development of this wedge of Tompkins County.

When the windows recently went up for sale, it was only natural the community would once again take ownership of its own legacy.

An attorney by trade but amateur historian by passion, it was two years ago Beth Silverberg moved to her home on Snyder Hill Road in the Town of Dryden, on a plot within a half mile of the old Snyder Hill Baptist Church. Recently noting the windows were up for sale, Silverberg – along with a coalition of neighbors living on plots longsince abdicated by the church’s congregation – worked together to raise the money necessary to purchase the windows from the Finger Lakes Estate and Auction Company. Knowing the history of the windows, the company sold them for below market value, a sort of gesture of acknowledgement for the cultural value they carried in the community. “ The w indows are rea l ly a touchstone for understanding the

riparian buffers where there is a 30-foot-long hedge between the end of an agricultural field and the water. Shrubby willows and cocoa matting placed in the buffer zones could help prevent erosion along creek beds, which lead to excessive nutrient runoff. But riparian buffers are controversial and expensive because they take up land that would normally be used to grow crops, he said.

Aside from working on the HABs, the state still needs to complete the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) – a requirement in the Clean Water Act for water bodies, such as the southern half of Cayuga Lake and more than 200 other waterways in New York State – that are classified as an impaired water body. A TMDL is an implementation plan that includes “a calculation of the maximum amount of pollutant (nitrogen, phosphorous, pathogens, etc.)

that a waterbody can receive and still meet water quality standards,” according to the DEC’s website.

The southern end of Cayuga Lake was listed on the Section 303(d) registry of impaired water bodies due to sediment and nutrient loads feeding weed and algal growth that impair summer recreational uses. Since 2002, a TMDL was required but was never published. The DEC did not respond to questions inquiring when the report will be released.

Governor Cuomo’s HAB effort will be funded using a combination of existing monies in the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) and Clean Water Infrastructure Act funding, as well as components to be included in the 2018-19 EPF budget. The 2018-19 budget will have to be approved by the New York State Legislature before the monies are available.

We’re motivated by the same urge, of people with a shared set of values coming together to create something meaningful.”

The windows themselves are in reasonable condition, albeit in need of an artisan’s touch, but are far removed from their former glory, a condition that cast a calming, rich light over worshippers on lazy Sunday afternoons. Silverberg said that while the community has done its part, she is now looking to appeal for funds and talent to allow for a permanent place to install the windows, as well as the funds that are needed to restore them to their former luster.

Cayuga Lake is included in the Governor’s Central Group, along with Owasco Lake and Skaneateles Lake.

In 2016, Owasco Lake that provides water for the public water system for the city of Auburn and the town of Owasco was the first water body in the state to have HABs threaten the drinking water.

Lake Skaneateles supplies water to the city of Syracuse and residents in other parts of Onondaga County, including Skaneateles and Elbridge.

The names of the experts and the local stakeholders to sit on the Central Group and develop an action plan have not been publicly announced.

The disagreement, while deeply rooted, lies largely with what the students see as a “whitewashing” of a role where the race of one of the protagonists – Esmeralda – is integral to the plot, and should be cast as such. While some have said that Esmerelda, the heroine in the play, is French, this is only a half-truth: Victor Hugo, the play’s auteur, wrote Esmeralda as a Romani woman, a race native to the northern Indian subcontinent that has long – and continues to face – persecution in Modern France. According to the interpretation written by Musical Theatre International, a clearinghouse from which the drama department obtained its scripts, in every instance Esmerelda is described, she is described as a Romani person with dark skin and struggling under a status imposed on her by her race.

Then there’s the story of senior Maddi Carroll, 13 years old at the time, who was in the musical at Boynton in 8th grade, a production of Cinderella. She was cast as the fairy godmother – what she described as the first “big part” she actually had in a school production. It would end up being her last.

“I was told by Robert Winans to act more like Queen Latifah, to act more sassy like this black stereotype,” she said. “So I decided not to work with him for the rest of my school career.”

Curriculumwise, the group says the Ithaca City School District falls well short of a healthy education on race. VanCort said the most substantial discussions on race happen during a five-day unit in social studies class in senior year and all told, any dialogue on race is more or less an extracurricular pursuit.

“The level of social consciousness that’s needed has to begin even earlier than high school,” said Nia Nunn, an Ithaca College professor, Makepeace’s mother and a leader of Ithaca’s Southside Community Center. “This is one issue, one conversation, but it demonstrates the need for us to begin re-writing the social studies curriculum.”

Some students in the show, Cummings acknowledged, have shown some discontent with the protest. Many are seniors, fac-

ing their final show within a program they’d dedicated years of their lives to, and see their final chance onstage threatened. As a single role in the play – the role of Esmeralda – has been highlighted, there could be the perception of one individual being singled out unfairly, no matter what the dialogue might be. This is where the students have proposed a solution: rather than cancelling the play, the group is calling for a student-led “hard reset,” one where students themselves – helped by the local theater community – can stage their own production, setting the ground for a future where the student body can serve as a sort of advisory panel in the casting of ICSD drama productions (As the students note, the individuals currently responsible for casting theatrical productions in the Ithaca City School District are all white.)

But it’s not only about quotas: it’s about acknowledgement, and understanding as well – to be proactive in recruiting people of color with promise and help to change a paradigm that, for decades, has been overwhelmingly and unquestionably pale without a challenge. Though the school does offer student-led productions (as ICSD administrator David Brown notes, the school offers studentdirected one act plays – this year, he noted in an email, there was also a hip-hop musical – in addition to the school’s main stage programming) the students say there is a greater gratification in being represented fairly and equitably on the main stage.

Currently, the students are working on their own solution.

They’ve begun to reach out to professionals in the local theater community to help them stage a new show. They’ve begun to research alternative productions, and have even had one theater’s artistic director offer up their space to stage a future show. And if – or when – that future comes, they say it will be completely student-run.

“Everytime we try and bring to their attention this isn’t the first time this has happened, they always seem to state this is the first time this has ever come up, that it’s the first time they’ve heard of this,” said Cummings. “Over the past few years, we know we’ve brought this up. And constantly, they push it away and continue to ‘do business.’”

“When the adults don’t listen to the adults,” said Cummings, “It’s time for the kids to try.”

A Fix To The Homeless Problem?

t a press conference in front of Ithaca City Hall nearly one year ago, our state Assemblywoman, Barbara Lifton, Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick and Lifton’s colleague, Queens-area Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi, presented a proposal they saw as a means of addressing a worsening homeless problem both here and across the State of New York.

This plan, called Home Stability Support, is a proposal in the State Assembly’s budget that proposes a liberal rent subsidy of 85 percent of an area’s fair market rent (Ithaca’s is currently set at $971, or 54 percent of a 40-hour per week minimum wage worker’s annual wages) in order to house those most at risk of homelessness and stabilize incomes that are all too often eaten up by their up-front cost of living.

While anyone paying more than 30 percent of their income on rent is considered cost-burdened, $971 per month in Ithaca is far beyond the capabilities of many of the city’s poorest and, for a homeless population already struggling to get back on their feet, renting a home – much less owning one – is a next-to-impossible prospect.

The price tag of such a program is estimated to be approximately $200 million over the next five years – all administered by the state. While budget hawks facing the state’s $4 billion deficit may bristle at a $40 million addition to the budget, the proposal is being promoted as a means of mandate relief to already overburdened com-

munities without the means to combat homelessness on their own. Administered through the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance no new infrastructure – including new hires or facilities – is expected, and its implementation is not estimated to cause any unnecessary burden to each municipalities’ own Departments of Social Services.

But what the proposal also seeks to accomplish, notes Hevesi, is replacing what the state had taken away and thrown to county governments, many of which are losing the tax bases needed to support a wide suite of social services.

According to an analysis by the fiscally conservative Albany think tank, The Empire Center, 46 of the 62 counties in New York State have lost population since 2010, in part due to the state’s relatively high tax burden, as noted in a 2012 survey by The Tax Foundation. The larger savings anticipated are essential as counties have been forced to spend more on social services as the state has gotten out of the homeless services business. Governor Cuomo has cut homeless services – the budget of OTDA – by 16 percent since entering office and shelter allowances, which range from $267 to about $440 per month for a family, are woefully inadequate to address skyrocketing housing costs.

“They’ve walked back their commitment and put a lot of onus on the counties,” said Hevesi.

Ammons (Re) Collected A

rchie Ammons (1926-2001) emerged as a star of Cornell’s faculty in a long tenure in its English department, from 1964-1998.

He wasn’t a supernova like his contemporary, Carl Sagan, an astronomer who appeared on TV and wrote best-sellers explaining the universe. Ammons was a poet who examined it.

He wrote over two dozen books. They are now collected in The Complete Poems of A.R. Ammons, published last month by W.W. Norton and Company.

The New York Times reviewed the collection and called Ammons “prolific.” No kidding. The collection is in two volumes, each over 1,000 pages.

Ammons wrote every day. His lines are not simple, but they are largely conversational in style. So why not write every day, just as you talk? Because you need something to write about? Ammons’ subject is often the natural world, which handily is always there.

It is both fixed and fluid, eternity present in moments, so there is plenty to scrutinize and note. Ammons’ interest in nature came naturally. He grew up on a farm. In college, he majored in biology. When he started writing, he was influenced as much by science as literature. He used to say that in his house growing up there were three books: “the Bible and two other books.”

His first book was called “Ommateum,” which refers to the compound eyes of arthropods. It did not sell well.

He was invited to teach at Cornell anyway, a few years later. It was his first university job. He had been principal of an ele-

ominion Energy’s Borger Compressor Station is located in a lovely residential area of Ellis Hollow in the Town of Dryden. This past summer, Dominion increased the capacity of its 200 mile natural gas pipeline between Horseheads and Albany. This network of pipelines and compressor stations is known as the Dominion New Market project.

Borger Station is a large, title V compressor station. The title V designation is given by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for facilities which emit, or have the potential to emit, major sources of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). At a community meeting arranged by Dominion in May, 2017, local engineers stated that Dominion was not using the Best Available Technology (BAT) at Borger that would reduce the amount of emissions coming from the facility. Dominion representatives confirmed this, and also admitted, when questioned, that BAT had been installed at some of their other compressor stations along the pipeline.The Borger facility is embedded in a dense residential area. More than 200

Ammons flourished at Cornell with a flurry of books, publishing one almost every year. In 1972 he won his first National Book Award for his Collected Poems, 1951-1971.

That made his mark.

Some years later, as an undergraduate, I took a writing class of Archie’s. It was a small class where we sat around a big table and read our poems aloud.

Once in a while Archie would stand at a blackboard and try to teach us formally about things like metre, enjambment, and caesura, but most of us were mainly interested in unfettered self-expression, not learning. He took it in good grace.

He could also take a joke.

Archie won a MacArthur Fellowship (the so-called “Genius Award”) in 1981, its first year of existence. The prize currently is $625,000. There are no conditions, restrictions, or strings. Archie was front page news, quite literally. The Ithaca Journal asked what he would do with the money and he said he might buy a new typewriter.

I hadn’t seen Archie in a while (I had graduated), but soon after I was driving through Cayuga Heights, where he lived, and saw him shambling down the road, head down, hands clasped behind his back.

He did things like that. I stopped the car and jumped out. “Hey, Archie,” I said, and remembered myself to him. “Oh, hey, hi,” he said.

I congratulated him on the award. “Funcontin u ed on page 7

homes are located within 2 kilometers of the compressor station, as well as a community center and nursery school.

Prior to the expansion, and at a time when Dominion claimed the facility was minimally in service, the local Mothers Out Front organization, in collaboration with research scientists at the Environmental Health Project (EHP), monitored air quality near the station. This Phase 1 air monitoring tested for known toxic emissions that are typically found from compressor stations to obtain a baseline measurement.

Later this year, Mothers Out Front and EHP will conduct a Phase 2 test to compare postexpansion emissions with the results from the Phase 1 baseline testing.

The results of Phase 1 were released to the community in November, 2017.

Whereas the known emissions detected were not unsurprisingly low, the monitors detected other toxins, some of which were unexpected in a rural area like Ellis Hollow. We are now post-construction, with presumably more gas traveling through this station (although Dominion will not tell us how much), and hence more emissions are likely being released by a facility using older, more polluting equipment.

Opinion article, Dominion official Ron Minnick criticized EHP’s report on its 2 year study of emissions and health effects at eighteen New York, title V compressor stations. Minnick states “At Dominion Energy, we strive to be a good steward of our resources and environment”, yet he does not even acknowledge that the Borger facility is indeed a major source of air pollution in our community, as indicated by its title V designation. Nor does he say that improvements could be made to reduce emissions if Dominion used the Best Available Technology recommended in the EPA Natural Gas STAR program that ironically Dominion Energy is a supporting member of. In fact, Mothers Out Front, together with local engineers, have determined that it is not only cost-effective for Dominion to apply many of these upgrades, but if implemented, BAT could drop the Borger station below the EPA title V classification. A winwin situation! Wouldn’t it have been nice if instead of only attacking EHP’s report, Minnick had admitted that the Borger station could be upgraded to minimize the release of toxic emissions by installing BAT equipment? Wouldn’t it have been reassuring to the community to learn that Dominion will afford it the protection and respect it deserves? Isn’t Dominion morally obliged to install upgrades to their existing equipment? They’ve done that elsewhere. Isn’t that what this community deserves too?

Isn’t that what a good neighbor would do?

Speak Out On TPS

he Trump administration’s war on immigrants recently took aim at a population that has been living in the United States legally for years—in many cases decades—by issuing deportation orders for holders of Temporary Protected Status from Haiti (over 50,000 people), Nicaragua (around 2,500), and El Salvador (around 200,000). Nearly 60,000 TPS holders from Honduras have yet to hear a decision about their fate, but given President Trump’s targeting of Central Americans, it’s hard to imagine a different outcome.

Haiti received TPS status in 2010 after a devastating earthquake, with an update in 2011 to include a raging cholera epidemic.

His face froze as, I guess, his mind raced back. Johnny’s was a popular watering hole for Cornell faculty and chances are Archie visited sometimes. I have a good poker face, but Archie was a pretty smart guy and it didn’t take him long to see through my ruse.

I don’t know if he ever used that. He might have. He wrote a lot and didn’t waste much. I’m sorry he’s not here to ask. I’m glad this collection is here to read. It’s rich recognition and Archie deserves it.

His column, Ithaca Notes, appears biweekly. granted TPS status in the aftermath of a series of natural disasters kicked off by Hurricane Mitch in 1998. A country’s TPS status can be renewed if the unsafe conditions are judged to persist, and there have been repeated renewals for the countries mentioned above. In announcing the deportation orders, the Department of Homeland Security stated that the disaster conditions in the affected countries for which TPS was granted no longer exist, and therefore TPS holders from those countries will no longer be protected by the program after specific target dates. There are obvious humanitarian reasons for allowing these targeted TPS holders to remain here, but there are economic reasons as well. In a letter last October to the Department of Homeland Security regarding TPS holders from Haiti, El Salvador and Honduras, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce argued that these hardworking immigrants contribute a great deal to the American economy. “The labor force participation for each of [the targeted nations’] TPS populations is over 80%,” the Chamber noted. Ending these designations would negatively impact “several key industries where TPS recipients make up a significant amount of the workforce. . . .[including] construction, food processing, hospitality, and home health services.” Terminating the TPS designation, the Chamber noted, “will exacerbate existing labor shortages in the [construction] industry and hamper “hurricane recovery efforts in states like Texas and Florida.”

TPS holders must now look to Congress for a means to remain legally in the U.S. and continue the lives they have built here.

Rep. Nydia M. Velazquez (D-NY 7th district) has introduced legislation that would provide just that—HR 4253, the American Promise Act. As of mid-January, HR 4253 has 70 cosponsors—not surprisingly, all Democrats. That is all the more reason for those of us in red districts (like NY23, represented by Republican Tom Reed) to contact our congressional representatives and ask them to support Rep. Velazquez’s bill. It should not be a partisan matter to allow people who have lived here legally for years and have become an integral part of their communities to remain with their families in the places that they have long called home..

This is especially important, as the issue of homelessness gets worse, putting a burden on our healthcare providers, social service workers and on law enforcement: the Governor himself noted in his 2016 State of the State Address that homeless support in New York State already costs taxpayers approximately $1 billion per year.

What it also does is address the issue of homelessness itself: the inability for people who may suffer from substance abuse problems inflamed by their instability to help build some semblance of normalcy in their lives. Once the homeless population is triaged and stabilized, the theory goes, the state and its various communities will finally be put in a position where this vicious cycle, for many, will have been broken, and the need for public assistance in the form of auxiliary programs such as food pantries, law enforcement and drug treatment, will be eliminated – all while making rent supplement programs implemented by the county obsolete.

“We’re dealing with the most severe symptom of poverty, which is homelessness,” Hevesi said.

It’s a bold, if expensive plan. But it’s a plan to fix a problem created by cracks in our system that were never properly closed. As the proposal proceeds to the New York State Senate’s budget process (our senator, Tom O’Mara, has not yet supported it but, Hevesi said, has expressed interest in learning about it), 113 members of the New York State Assembly, including 30 Republicans and minority leader, Brian Kolb, have expressed support for this measure, and editorial boards such as that at The New York Times have come out in favor of the legislation.

Beyond the bottom line, the situation facing our homeless population, locally, is dire. Recent news of state-imposed regulations on our homeless shelter (requiring people with any reportable income to pay to stay there) attracted attention from the County Legislature. Its membership has since, has appealed the regulation to the state. The shelter itself is crowded and its space, insufficient, with plenty of anecdotal evidence of the shelter resorting to book hotel rooms and, in some cases, church basements to address the demand. The situation for the unsheltered homeless has become a desperate one: According to documents and emails obtained by the Ithaca Times/Finger Lakes Community Newspapers, officials with the Department of Social Services have expressed concern for the health of those living in an enclave behind the city’s big box stores known as “The Jungle,” where homeless advocates have shared anecdotal evidence of multiple deaths taking place over the past year. (The Ithaca Times’ FOIL on police calls to the Jungle over the past year found evidence of one overdose, one cardiac arrest and multiple welfare checks.) In an email obtained in our reporting, one caseworker even related to his colleagues a story he had heard of a woman who suffered a miscarriage while living in the Jungle, and died there.

With stories like this coming forth, we believe it’s time to take a serious stand on homelessness. Funding this measure will be a great first step.

This week the assembly passed legislation meant to allow homeowners flexibility in purchasing propane in periods of emergency. Westchester County Democrat Sandy Galef wrote the legislation after cold snaps gripped most of the state over the last few weeks causing brief spells drastically increasing greater consumption and demand. The bill would allow consumers who rent their propane tanks from their propane suppliers to purchase the gas itself from any supplier in times of a declared emergency.

Earlier this month, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office said it was investigating cases of possible spikes in propane prices-deemed price gougingby suppliers who locked their customers to purchase only their propane.

Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton joined 101 other assembly members in voting for the bill which passed and was sent to the senate for consideration.

Tom O’M ara – NY S enate A bill of Senator Tom O’Mara’s allowing purple heart medal recipients to obtain the corresponding vanity license plate free of charge once again passed committee this week. Veterans currently pay $60 for the plate.

“I’m proud to sponsor this legislation to provide another small way to remember and to honor the sacrifices of America’s veterans,” O’Mara wrote in a press release last week. “Purple Heart recipients risked their lives in defense of America. They are heroes, and they have earned and deserve every show of respect and gratitude that we can provide.

The same bill passed the Senate in 2017, but was never taken up in the assembly.

O’Mara will sit on the joint budget hearing for transportation on Thursday.

Tom R eed – U.S. Congress

The House approved its initial spending plan on Thursday, leaving the senate to duke out the rest. Senators threw punches for four days, bringing the federal bureaucracy into and out of shutdown in the meantime.

Reed told local reporters Tuesday he would prefer a long-term spending bill, but prioritized keeping the government open. Amidst the shutdown fever, the House rolled through a number of other bills. On Friday, Republicans passed the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act,” which requires doctors to provide for a child’s survival after a failed abortion attempt.

Ithaca and the 1918 Flu Epidemic

n Monday, October 14, 1918, the Ithaca Journal announced that there were 600 cases of the flu citywide and seven deaths over the weekend. The new City Hospital on Quarry Street was at full capacity, as was the Cornell infirmary. The Sage College annex on Cornell’s campus and Cascadilla Hall in Collegetown had been turned into overflow hospitals. The Masons opened their meeting hall over the Ithaca Savings Bank on the corner of Seneca and Tioga Streets to sick beds. On the same page, there was an appeal for ‘helpers’ as many of the city’s nurses were also sick. Ithaca didn’t know it yet, but even darker days lay ahead. It was the beginning of the worst week of the worst month of the deadliest disease outbreak in human history.

The flu, influenza, the ‘grip’ (or ‘grippe’) was and still is an annual affliction. That year was different in quantity and quality, reaching pandemic proportions. The influenza virus mutates quickly, changing to the point that the human immune system has difficulty recognizing it from one season to the next. It becomes a pandemic when a new and virulent influenza virus enters the popu-

lation and spreads worldwide, as in 1918.

An exact number is unlikely ever to be determined, given the lack of contemporary records, but over the course of 15 months in 1918-1919, the so-called Spanish Flu killed between 50 and 100 million people worldwide, perhaps 2.5% of the global population.

In the United States alone, some 675,000 died, in a population of 107 million.

The ordinary seasonal flu virus binds to cells in the upper respiratory tract - the nose and throat - which is why it transmits easily.

The 1918 flu virus infected cells in the upper respiratory tract, but also deep in the lungs, very often leading to pneumonia. And it was 25 times more deadly than ordinary flu.

Normally, 1/10 of 1% of those afflicted die (typically 30,00-40,000 per year in the U.S. these days). With the 1918 flu, 2.5% of those who contracted the disease did not survive.

What was also different in 1918 was the age of the victims. Normally, elderly people account for the overwhelming number of influenza deaths; that year, it was the opposite, with young adults (ages 20-40) killed in the highest numbers. This was particularly hard on the military, then mobilized and fighting in France. More than a million men were

sickened and 30,000 died e before they ever reached France.

Before it was over, 25% of U.S. population and, according to War Department records, 40% of the army and navy would fall ill. In fact, 50% of American military deaths in World War I were caused by the flu.

The epidemic acknowledged no class or rank distinctions. British prime minister David Lloyd George, General John J. Pershing and Kaiser Wilhelm II were afflicted.

President Wilson was laid low during the Versailles Peace Conference. Neither of the Dodge brothers who founded the automobile company survived, nor did Gustav Klimt, Max Weber or Fred Trump, our current president’s grandfather.

Franklin Roosevelt, then Assistant Secretary of the Navy, traveled to France to visit the front. On his return trip, the flu struck his ship, the USS Leviathan, and several people died onboard. Roosevelt was stricken, and it developed into a case of double pneumonia. He was so sick that on his arrival in the United States, he was too weak to walk and was carried off the ship on a stretcher.

No national official ever publicly acknowledged the danger of influenza, not

even the president or any member of his cabinet. Surgeon General Rupert Blue, widely seen as an ineffectual bureaucrat, made no preparations and did little to fight or contain the disease, aside from declaring, “There is no cause for alarm if precautions are observed.” The states’ governors were left to cope with the crisis on their own. In New York State, localities were told to use their “best judgment”. Consequently, responses varied greatly from place to place.

There were school closings, the shutting of public places, and cancellation of sporting events in other parts of the state, but local health department figures opted against such precautions here, instead saying that residents should go about their regular schedules, paying attention to sanitation, and avoiding sick people. And although Buffalo, Rochester and other cities shut down such public places as streetcars, schools and saloons, the Ithaca Journal reported on October 9 that the County Health Board felt such measures were ineffective, so public areas remained open. (Closing saloons would perhaps have added insult to injury in any event.

As a result of a local referendum, Ithaca had gone dry on October 1.)

Still, normal routines were necessarily affected. Between wartime travel restrictions and the flu, Cornell didn’t field a football team that fall, the only time between 1887 and the present.

The situation was certainly compounded by the fact that the U.S. military had taken half the country’s physicians under 45 (some 38,000), and, perhaps more importantly, a huge number of nurses for the war effort.

Medical resources were already stretched thin before the outbreak. Locally, medical students had to be deputized to care for the sick.

Instruction at the Ithaca division of Cornell’s medical college, then operating out of Stimson Hall, ground to a complete standstill in October. Walter Niles, dean of the medical college wrote: “For more than a month all of the seniors and juniors were devoting most of their time to the hospital.” The flu took the college’s only anatomy instructor, Henry K. Davis, on October 26.

Like tens of millions of other Americans, many of the sick in Tompkins County were not hospitalized and saw no doctor or nurse at all, trusting in home remedies like camphor balls hung around the neck, gargling with disinfectants and liberal applications of Vick’s VapoRub. Yet, as bad and sudden as the epidemic was in October, the local flu story remained eclipsed by war news and never made it to the front page of the Ithaca Journal. Epic events were occurring. By the fall of 1918, more than 5 million soldiers had died in the four-year-long stalemate of trench warfare.

Now, after the endless months of death, the end seemed to be in sight, and Americans were in the thick of it. The Central Powers were simultaneously breaking away from one another and disintegrating internally.

The German army was being driven back through Belgium. Separate German and Austrian peace feelers were rebuffed by President Wilson. This was compelling stuff.

Every day, the Ithaca Journal would publish 2-3 columns of American casualties, listing the names and hometowns of the killed

and wounded. (Monday, October 14 – 769 names, Tuesday – 494, Wednesday – 436, Thursday – 211, Friday – 596) That week, the new Strand Theatre was showing “To Hell With The Kaiser” while the Crescent ran “The Hun Within.”

It was a time of insistent, almost compulsory patriotism in America. There were weekly “meatless” days and daily “wheatless” meals for the sake of the war effort. “Gasless” Sundays were supposed to reduce needless automobile travel, and though these were technically voluntary

restrictions, it was not unheard-of for police to pull over drivers on Sundays and inquire as to the nature of the trip.

Every town and city had a quota in the Fourth Liberty Loan campaign of September and October, 1918, and Ithaca was falling short. On Wednesday, October 16, the Journal reported that the local Loan Committee was going to publish the names of Ithacans who had not bought bonds in the next day’s newspaper. (In the event, no names were published, though everyone who did contribute was listed.)

Though stories of flu outbreaks in military camps had been reported, the first clear mention in the newspaper of a local resident ill from influenza came on Saturday, October 5. By next Tuesday, October 8, the Journal reported 300 cases of the flu in the city, and the opening of Cascadilla Hall as an overflow hospital. The same day, New York Telephone took out an ad asking customers to refrain from making unnecessary calls, as their operating force had been depleted due to “widespread sickness”. Each day’s pa-

per now carried mention of people taken ill throughout the county. On October 12, the Masons opened their hall as an overflow hospital. Shopkeepers, many with staff out sick, were having a hard time keeping their stores open. The Journal itself asked subscribers’ indulgence with delivery problems.

On Thursday, October 17, there were five deaths in 24 hours. Friday, October 18, five more deaths. That day, the editors of the Ithaca Journal seemed to question the Board of Health’s no-close order, but also admonished, “It is time for all of us to maintain our mental poise and not become panicky.” The next day, Saturday, brought eleven more dead.

Monday, near a story announcing eight flu deaths, Rothschild’s Department Store advertised “perfect ventilation, every precaution taken, merchandise bought of merchants whom we know are obeying sanitary laws”. Personal columns and obituary pages reported illness and death from flu and pneumonia.

Most flu victims recovered, but there were heart-rending stories. On October 16, two sisters in their thirties died within minutes of each other, one at City Hospital and one at home in Trumansburg.

One Town of Ithaca family was almost completely wiped out: three children and their mother all succumbed within six weeks in October and November.

Ithaca College’s first president, William Grant Egbert, and his wife, Mabel, opened their home to students suffering from the flu turning it into an infirmary. Mrs. Egbert ultimately became sick and died on November 2.

The Cornell community, then numbering less than 5,000, was hit hard. In a 1919 report to the university’s president, Treasurer C.D. Bostwick wrote: “During October and November there were approximately 900 cases cared for, all being students in the university or in one of the government schools.

There were 37 deaths.”

Cornellian Willard Straight died December 1 of pneumonia from the flu. He was 38 years old. In his will, he directed his wife Dorothy to do “such thing or things for Cornell University as she may think most fitting and useful to make the same a more human place.” She used his estate to fund the construction of Willard Straight Hall, which opened in 1925.

The final figures for Tompkins County, population 35,000 at the time, are sobering.

Between influenza and pneumonia, at least 140 died and, though the number of sick was never fully calculated, it was certainly in the thousands.

After the epidemic subsided, the New York State Department of Health issued a report in which there was a comparison of the death rates per 100,000 due to the flu and pneumonia in 1918 and in “normal” years.

The ‘normal’ annual death rate due to flu ranged from 12 to 20 per 100,000. In 1918 it was 260. For pneumonia the ‘normal’ rate ran between 170 and 185 per 100,000. In 1918 it was 338.

Armistice Day came on November 11, and though there were parades and conga lines on city streets, it was perhaps a more subdued celebration than might otherwise have been. This was probably also true in light of the fact that the end of the war came on the heels of the death of Andrew Dickson White, co-founder of Cornell University and local community pillar. On October 26, White suffered a stroke following a ‘severe illness of several days’. On the morning of Monday, November 4, he died at home in Ithaca.

It is perhaps surprising that the 1918 Flu doesn’t loom larger in public consciousness as an historical event. Peaking, as it did, during the final stages of World War I may explain that, but it would be wrong to think that such an epidemic was an aberration or is unlikely to recur.

Medical science had only recently embraced germ theory and the nature of viruses was not fully understood, even by many doctors, in 1918; some scientists still believed “miasma” accounted for influenza’s spread. With considerable medical advances since then, people have become complacent about the flu. Today the public’s attention is captured by Ebola or Zika or MERS, not influenza, which is often confused with the common cold. That is a mistake.

We are arguably just as vulnerable to a pandemic as we were a hundred years ago.

Top public health experts still routinely rank influenza as potentially the most dangerous health threat we face. Last year, upon leaving his post as director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and acting administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, infectious disease expert Dr. Thomas Frieden was asked what kept him up at night. “The biggest concern is always for an influenza pandemic...[It] really is the worst-case scenario.” It seems that, in this centennial year, the grim events of a century ago should be of more than historic interest.

An Ithaca Native Heads To The Pros

hen I learned that Ithaca High (2 011) a nd It h a c a C o l le ge (2016) grad Eli Gobrecht had been selected by the Denver Outlaws in the Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft, I flashed back to my own dreams as a younger man.

I called Eli and said, “I remember drea ming of play ing baseba l l in t he majors, and there wasn’t even a major league lacrosse team back then. What were your big dreams as a youngster?”

Eli replied, “My first dream was to play pro hockey.”

Eli came up through the Ithaca Youth Leagues in both sports, and he credits Brian Lasda with helping him build a strong lacrosse foundation. “Brian played on one of the national championship teams at Cornell,” Eli said, “and he was my coach, starting in second grade.”

Having played for one of the sport’s preeminent mentors at Cornell, Lasda knows his stuff, and his sons – Riley and Eli – both played Division 1 lacrosse (at Albany) and compete for Team Latvia in the World Games. In Gobrecht’s words, “Brian taught us to play fast and play tough, and I still play that way.”

I recalled that Eli had taken a year off from lacrosse after graduating from Ithaca High, and he refreshed my memory. “I had plans to play collegiate hockey,” he said, “so I played Junior Hockey for the Rochester Stars. It worked out that I could go to Ithaca College, because my mom works there and I got a break on

tuition.”

Bombers’ head coach Jeff Long was likely very grateful for that tuition break, because Gobrecht was a force on South Hill. He was a three-time All-American, three-time All-Empire 8, and was, in his senior season, the Division III Defensive Player of the Year. He wreaked all kinds of havoc, causing 166 turnovers and scooping up 266 ground balls, and his 17 goals and 10 assists were impressive totals, given he played defenseman.

I asked Jeff if he was pleased that Eli’s dream of playing pro hockey didn’t pan out, and he said, “It sure worked out well for us, and I think Eli has a real shot at the pro level. He runs the whole field, and like most of the players coming out of Frank Welch’s program (at Ithaca High), Eli has a great lacrosse IQ. Frank challenges them to be bigger, stronger and faster, and he provides a great foundation.”

After graduating from I.C., Gobrecht continued his resourceful ways, landing a scholarship to attend graduate school in Durham University, in England. Having earned his B.A. in Management, Eli studied Finance in grad school, earning his Master’s in December. I asked him if his degrees would help him manage his money as a pro athlete, and if he would be flying a private jet to training camp. That got a good laugh.

Eli is liv ing in Seatt le t hese days, and his relocation to the west coast was prompted by his time in the training camp of the Vancouver Stealth, where he

met Chris O’Dougherty, the only American on the roster and the co- founder of CitySide Lax in Seattle. “The Stealth released me after training camp,” he stated, “and I have been coaching at CitySide Lax, where we do camps and clinics, plus spring and fall travel lacrosse leagues.” Eli added, “Just about everyone who plays pro lacrosse has a full-time job, and the founder of CitySide Lax played for Vancouver and he understands my scheduling needs.”

G obrecht ha s a lso sha r pened h is coaching skills at O’Dea, a private school in Seattle. And his own experience has served him well as a coach. “I encourage kids to play multiple sports,” Eli offered.

“I have seen too many kids play one sport

year ‘round,” and he pointed out that doing so increases the chances of injury and burn-out.

Eli looks forward to getting to the Outlaws’ training camp in early April.

He said, “They have a 23-man protected roster, but you never know who’s coming back or what might change, so I’ll give it my best shot to make the roster.” There is an “active roster” and a “practice roster,” and Eli said “They have some good defensemen, but they’re always trying to add depth. I’m excited for the opportunity.”

The Shop shuts down after 8 1/2 years

rekking down one of Ithaca’s many hills, one of Ithaca’s many coffee shops appears on the right. But unlike other Ithaca hills and unlike other Ithaca coffee shops at the bottom of a hill, this particular shop held a legacy to locals — a legacy stronger than the record store that used to operate in the same space. It’s been nearly 10 years since No Radio Records closed, and The Shop moved in shortly after — moved in with a place to stay, if now only for a little while.

After eight-and-a-half years of business, The Shop closed its doors Friday, Jan. 12. A cozy spot to read — or in some cases write — a book, chat over made-to-order coffee or munch on a pastry, The Shop harbored a tight-knit community off the usual path of The Commons and College Town.

What began with a woman passionate about coffee and visual art blossomed into a subculture of artists and coffee enthusiasts.

And for others, The Shop became the place to exhibit art: on The Shop’s walls, or on their skin.

Past the whirr of the coffee makers and the soft hum of conversations, the honey-yellow walls of The Shop melt into bright blue, and Model Citizen Tattoo begins. In a coffee shop that encourages the creating and exhibiting of art, tattoos are being drawn and crafted by artists who have been training for years — just in the back of the cafe.

While The Shop has shut down, Model Citizen still remains open by appointment only. But with a shift in passion and a new chapter in the storefront’s life, owner of The Shop Phoebe Aceto looks to nourish the future of her business, this time with tattooing.

Up the couple of steps and through the door, soft music played and polite conversations carried through the air. Immediately off to the right, a large potted plant loomed over a bar facing the window, a table that looked like it was salvaged from old wood — made by hand and with a careful eye.

And the rest of the furniture in The Shop had that same sort of feel: made by hand, but with a precarious execution and rustic finish. Walking into The Shop felt like “walking into someone’s living room,” as regular customer Woody Chichester described it.

Aceto said much of the charm from The Shop came from her family pulling together furniture and readying the space for its first days. The careful construction of the tables were carried out by her brother, and her parents and partner helped prepare the rest of the space. Family built with a homely vibe.

“Just to have an open living room and space — we always need more of that,” Aceto said. “ …

lated to every corner of The Shop. Recipes were drafted from the minds of creative baristas, local artists with a modest following hung their works on the warm-colored walls and hands were creating work every day at the tables of The Shop, be it writing a novel or doodling on lecture notes.

“Nothing felt comfortable the way The Shop felt comfortable,” Chichester said. “... Ithaca is lucky to have so many coffee spots, and they’re all good for different things. But for me, The Shop was the one I had always wanted to go to.”

As plates clanked and the clacks of a keyboard kept a rhythm, the drone of the tattoo guns steadied the noise. There isn’t an existing relationship between tattoos and coffee; it’s rare they’re associated together at all, especially operating in the same space. But Aceto had plans to house The Shop and Model Citizen together since the beginning, working with longtime friend James Spiers.

When opening the space, Aceto’s passions were crafting coffee and creating tattoos: something she could easily bounce between in a joint operation.

Tattoo artistry and coffee making went together naturally for Aceto.

This relationship is evident when she talks about either, from concocting winter elixirs to detailing her floral and bird tattoos. Just in her workspace, her manilla folder of tattoo drafts is bursting, and her pencils struggle to fit in their plastic compartments.

The two things she cared about came together, and the community came together, too.

“Right away and still to the end, we had customers that started coming here right from the beginning. Out of all the coffee shops and places I’ve worked, we had such a sweet scene of regulars and pleasant people,” Aceto said. “It’s been amazing community support — there’s no way to start a small business without it.”

On Monday, Jan. 8, Aceto announced on social media that The Shop would be closing Jan. 12.

“I guess it’s kind of naive to think that any small business in town is not just totally struggling. I think we all know that’s pretty clear,” Aceto said. “While the business may have the face on that everything is totally fine, behind the scenes, they’re making sure that every day we can keep moving.”

After the holidays, like most small businesses in Ithaca, sales plummeted. With students leaving town for semester breaks and the bitter cold weather that rung in the new year, The Shop struggled to make enough funds to pay its workers and stay open.

Get The Led Out to perform at the State Theatre

IT: Have you considered delving into Robert Plant’s stuff after Zeppelin: The Honeydrippers, Alison Krauss?

PS: Well, we talked about it because we knew that if this thing continued to go on, and the band’s already been together 14 years at this point, that as the thing grows, if indeed it does, and it has, we have this opportunity to expand the show and try different things and delve into different areas.

That’s certainly something we talked about: anything Zeppelin-centric. So it could go beyond that, you know? It could be The Firm. [The Firm were a British rock supergroup formed in 1984, featuring singer Paul Rodgers (Free and Bad Company), Jimmy Page, drummer Chris Slade (Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Uriah Heep and AC/ DC) and bass player Tony Franklin.]

IT: [laughs] I was going to mention The Firm!

PS: We love The Firm, and we’d love to do “Closer,” that was a really cool tune they did. We haven’t really gone down that path yet, but it’s certainly on the table as far as I’m concerned. I’d love to do “Sea of Love”

by The Honeydrippers. At this point, there are still ten songs that we’ve not yet done within the Led Zeppelin studio catalog proper.

IT: Can you tell us one, and why?

PS: Sure. Like for instance, “Hats Off to (Roy) Harper,” off Led Zeppelin III. It’s more of an effects thing than it is a song, but I don’t think we’ve ever had a request for it in 14 years. It’s not one we really cared about. But who knows? •

She said focusing on art while managing a business was difficult. Each hiccup in the business presented another distraction that took her away from her tattoo artistry.

Aceto said she’s excited to be a full-time artist again, without the stress of operating a staff and the entrepreneurial responsibilities of running a business.

Closing The Shop was emotional for Aceto, but closing operations is what she calls “Phase One,” and plans are continuing to move forward. Aceto looks toward a quick turnaround.

“It’s been really wonderful to serve people in the community with coffee all these years, and now I’m just ready to now have my business just be me and my artwork — that’s just going to be priceless,” Aceto said. •

The construction by the City of Ithaca on Buffalo caused the cars driving down the hill to detour away from the shop. Instead of passing it on the normal route, The Shop was out of range of any drivers — and likely not in the heads of drivers who had to park farther away from The Shop than usual.

Aceto said she received “no word from the city of when [construction] was even starting or when it was going to end,” so she could not prepare for the shift in business.

The sliver of business she lost was critical, and it was enough to push The Shop out of operations. Aceto looked to await the student rush after the beginning of January, but funds quickly ran low and she could no longer afford to pay her baristas.

“I love our location, but it has left us out of the loop of the downtown business love,” she said. “After being in a construction zone, how do you keep going? You can’t.

There’s no backup for that.”

Aceto said she understands the city needs to complete these projects, but the timing of construction was an unfortunate for The Shop. Had it been the summer time, she said, The Shop may have been able to stay afloat.

The construction was completed in December, but it still wasn’t enough to save The Shop. And as The Shop becomes a memory, a story of a passionate barista, h e

ill-fitting Halloween costume and is more interested in impersonation than they are in the actual music. But there’s also a number of really top-notch ones, too, and that’s what we’re striving for.”

In advance of GTLO’s upcoming show on Saturday, Jan. 27 at the State Theatre, Aceto’s next project will allow the artist within her to emerge — a love she’s eager to nourish once again.

Sinclair spoke to the Ithaca Times about fan requests, Robert Plant’s solo career and one Zeppelin song that GTLO has never played.

Ithaca Times: With the new Thor movie out last year, are you getting a lot more requests for “The Immigrant Song” (Led Zeppelin III)?

Paul Sinclair: I can’t say that I’ve noticed that so much. Usually, the requests that come in…I mean, yeah, we’ll get “Immigrant” and “Rock and Roll” and some of the obvious ones. But a lot of times, the requests that come in are like, “Tangerine” (Led Zeppelin III) or “Down by the Seaside” (Physical Graffiti) or “Achilles Last Stand” (Presence), a lot of the more obscure stuff.

I’ve heard more people talk about “Immigrant Song” as a result of that. But not necessarily in terms of requests.

IT: You’re on a desert island and you can have one Led Zeppelin album. Which one would you pick?

PS: Well, I mention it in concert all the time, it’s the reason I sing, and certainly the reason I love Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin II. It’s just hands-down my favorite. I really love the early Zeppelin. I mean, I love it all, but the reason I love Robert Plant is really that era of Zeppelin, and II particularly because, my God, is there a more perfect heavy rock record in existence, when it starts with “Whole Lotta Love” and ends with “Bring It On Home.” You got your ballads – “Thank You” – the groundbreaking drum solo – “Moby Dick.” The light and shade of “Ramble On,” “Heartbreaker.” I mean, everything on that record was just

“I just sink into that detail work and I love it so much. That’s the thing about tattooing: I’m only there,” Aceto said.

“Before, during and after a tattoo, that’s all I’m thinking about is that tattoo. It’s really satisfying — it’s really cool.”

Moving forward, Aceto and Spiers will no longer remain at 312 E Seneca Street.

While the two originally had plans to transform the former Shop into a full tattoo parlor, Aceto decided to branch off into her own tattoo and art studio. Aceto and Spiers have been working together for nearly 17 years — Spiers gave Aceto her first tattoo when she was 18 — and she feels comfortable enough to let her creative energy shine through in a solo business.

Her upcoming studio will be called Here’s To You Tattoo.

Spiers will be taking Model Citizen somewhere else in Ithaca. Both Spiers and Aceto will be starting their businesses over in new parts of town.

“It was a nice balance: during the daytime doing barista stuff and being around that environment, and being around the coffee helps with creativity,” Tattoo Apprentice at Model Citizen and former barista at The Shop Erin Blaney said. “I would go in the back and help out with the drawing. It was obviously a bonus; they were both in the same exact space.”

intolerance of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. — especially regarding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) — the conversation on immigration has erupted into a louder, raucous roar. With Ironbound, O’Gara aims to continue the discussion on immigration, this time in the form of art.

“It was really wanting to be engaged more with the community and looking at different ways we can create conversation,” O’Gara said. “The Kitchen is all about different ways we can create conversation, and this seemed like an interesting way of looking at those conversations and looking at them through a lens of a variety of artforms and how a similar story with different characters, and how they are represented in various artforms.”

Important conversations will continue through the season, the next collaboration being the production of Bright Half Life and the screening of Charles HermanWurmfeld’s 2001 film Kissing Jessica Stein.

Both explore lesbian relationships in different capacities and environments.

T

he Kitchen Theatre Company and Cinemapolis will be collaborating for the first time in the upcoming series “Press Play.” The new season at the Kitchen will incorporate a one-night-only film screening between shows, complete with a Q&A with those involved in the play production and experts on film and screenwriting. The series begins with the production of Ironbound at the Kitchen and a screening of Dancer in the Dark 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Cinemapolis.

The idea came to Producing Artistic Director of the Kitchen M. Bevin O’Gara this past summer. After taking the helm of the Kitchen in July, she approached Executive Director of Cinemapolis Brett Bossard with the idea of mixing the two art forms.

And while both institutions have been staples in Ithaca for decades, the two have never crossed paths.

“Cross-institutional collaboration is something I’m really passionate about, especially in a community like Ithaca where you have a cross-pollination of art forms,” O’Gara said. “And exploring what can sort of happen when you’re talking about two different art forms in conversation with one another.”

Before O’Gara was at the Kitchen, she worked in several other theater companies, one being the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Boston. Coolidge Corner is an arthouse theater that often combines film and play productions, with a constant stream of mixing the two artforms. Having the experience of fitting together theater and cinema drove the O’Gara to bring this idea to

Ithaca. And when she considered the reach of both the Kitchen and Cinemapolis in town, the decision to work together came naturally.

Both venues showcase art to educate, entertain and celebrate diversity, according to their websites. And with theater and cinema being similar mediums, weaving together scripts and screenplays with like themes made sense to O’Gara and Bossard.

“The audience experience in many ways is very similar: people are putting themselves in a room full of strangers and experiencing different forms of art,” Bossard said. “The core experience is very similar. Obviously the experience of the live theater makes every performance different, but cinema also has ways of really immersing the audience in an idea that live theater cannot engage.”

Beginning the series, the Kitchen’s production of Ironbound — which will run through Feb. 4 — will merge with Lars von Trier’s 2000 film, Dancer in the Dark.

Ironbound follows the story of Darja, a Polish immigrant in the United States trying to create a life in a country that will not accept her. The story is told through several decades and presidential administrations, along with several relationships, with her growing son by her side. inger-songwriter Rachael Yamagata will be playing at The Dock on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. The Ithaca Times recently caught up with her at her home in Woodstock to talk touring, what inspires her and the woods.

Ithaca Times: Hi Rachael how are you doing today?

Rachael Yamagata: Hey James I’m good how are you?

IT: This is the second date on this tour you just started.

RY: Yeah, it’s starting up next week. I do a show on Thursday and then I come to you guys right after that, Saturday maybe?

I have to go look at my calendar.

IT: (laughs)

RY: I’m excited. Ithaca is always fun to play.

IT: Do you like touring in general? Or is it something you have to do as an artist to support the artwork.

RY: I think I have a standard love/hate relationship with it. I like the travel, I like the people, and it’s nice to see familiar faces out on the road. I’ve certainly done a lot of it, especially over the past three years. This is like my eighteenth tour or something a little nutty. What I try and do is make the show different, a different experience.

IT: What can we expect to be different this show? I saw that it’s Songs. Stories.

Solo. So is it gonna be a little bit stripped

back?

RY: Yeah. This is totally stark and vulnerable. It’s just me, piano and guitar. I’ve done a lot of full band, big bells and whistles tours and I have a lot of fans coming up to me and saying that they really love it when I just sit down at a piano and do something super intimate like that.

IT: That’s awesome. I love when you get the feeling of “Wow, the person that does these big production tours, that does these amazing, high production value, crazy albums? I’m going to have a personal moment with them.” That’s really cool.

RY: Yeah!

IT: Are you gonna be performing mostly your Tightrope Walker stuff or are you doing almost a retrospective?

RY: It’s more of a retrospective. I’m trying to make it more of a dynamic set, but something that isn’t just the delivery of a record.

IT: That’s so cool! When you’re planning the record or working on your stuff do you like to be alone or do you like more of a collaborative environment?

RY: I like to be alone writing and then I like to be with other people for actually f leshing out arrangements and experimenting with the production backdrop.

That I always enjoy, people who are versatile on different instruments. It’s actually kind of fun to take people who don’t traditionally play an instrument and put them on it because they always have a unique approach to it. I did that with the last record. I’ve been drawn to probably more guitar/bass players, but also f lirt around with the piano. And they’ve just done some amazing piano work on it because it was a new instrument to them.

IT: I was kind of amazed to listen to the album because I had this idea that you go off in the woods and you write alone, but the album is so sumptuous. There is so many instruments and the sound is so mature.

RY: Thanks!

IT: When you were writing and producing that record was your intention to take what you’ve already been doing as an artist and push it to the limit?

RY: No, I always do things backwards.

I’m pretty sure I wanted to do that record and just have vocal and one instrument, and it became this epic thing.

IT: (laughs) RY: I never know where it’s gonna go.

That was interesting because I recorded in my house and I had all these sonic ideas of textures I wanted. I did lay down different arrangements beforehand. I knew I wanted some and then I did part of the collaborative process with musicians who are up here. I would try to follow the storyline of the lyric and see what kind of backdrop the story really wants.

It was all just a free for all, trial and error production experiment and I’m glad that it registered and worked out the way it did because I was just having fun and experimenting.

IT: Are you the Tightrope Walker? Do you see yourself as that?

RY: Yeah, but I was thinking more of humanity as the Tightrope Walker.

People who are just trying to stay inspired and meet the challenges of living your life and finding fulfillment. All of those sort of heady ideas were floating around when I wrote the record. It was a more universal outreach message to people to keep going and not give up.

IT: You’re talking about big, broad themes.

RY: I think that comes with age and persevering. I’ve milked the internal relationship/heartache theme and this was something new that caught my attention that finally made sense when I tried to articulate it in song without it being kitschy or kumbaya-ish Pollyanna optimism.

IT: Absolutely. So you live out in Woodstock, that’s a little bit out in the boonies if I’m not mistaken? You know, you’re out in the woods.

RY: Yup. IT: How much does that landscape inform your work?

RY: I think it centers me. It’s important to have a place where I can translate the craziness of traveling a lot all over the world. I think it has a lot to do with putting me in the best mindset to create something. There’s a lot of musical history here, which is nice to be around.

You’re immersed in nature. I’m a complete homebody hermit so that serves how I like to live pretty well. All of that just gives me a really great, strong canvas to work from, to actually just let my imagination go.

Heads Up Films for the Weekend

Bright, directed by David Ayer; written

by Max Landis, streaming on Netflix. The Toys That Made Us, streaming on Netflix. ooking back on it, I guess I didn’t explain myself well enough, but it was an interesting conversation.

I was talking to a coworker about the new sci-fi buddy cop flick Bright that dropped on Netflix just before Christmas. Directed by David Ayers from a script by Max Landis, Bright takes place in a poorly conceived alternate reality set around Los Angeles where humans and mythical creatures live together, and human cop Will Smith is reluctantly paired up with an Orc cop played by Joel Edgerton.

Not to gang up on my coworker, but he’s literally the only person I’ve encountered who liked Bright; every other person, review or movie podcast agreed with me that Bright was, to put it mildly, frustratingly generic.

“I hated it,” I said. “It was like they took random scenes from a dozen cop

movies, inserted the word “Orc” where they needed to. It was such a lame ripoff of Lethal Weapon and 48 HRS. and all those great buddy movies.”

“You can’t think like that,” he said.

“Get your head out of the past. This is the future.”

I said, “Hey, if you want to see a great buddy cop movie with a sci-fi twist, check out The Hidden, from 1987 –“ “There you go again. Stop bringing up the past.”

You know what? I can’t help it.

Aside from a clever and atmospheric title sequence that shows the influence of alien culture reflected in urban graffiti – shades of John Sayles’ The Brother From Another Planet – Bright has so little flavor, pace or point of view that the act of watching it just reminded me of better movies that I’d rather be watching, like The Hidden or my Lethal Weapon box set. It’s like no one on set realized that they were just doing a poor remake of Alien Nation (1988), which wasn’t that great either.

The script by Max Landis is preachy, on-the-nose and ham-fisted, hammering home its points about intolerance and racism with as much subtlety as one of Rod Serling’s “Twilight Zone” episodes. Unlike Lethal Weapon and The Hidden, which both advanced and added to a well-worn genre, Bright brings little to the party. It’s more than
