s New York State Assembly members and senators have negotiated over the New York state budget in time to begin the next fiscal year in a few weeks, the Cornell Board of Trustees gathered on March 21 and 22 to speak about any urgent business pertaining to the school.

During the first of two open sessions, the board discussed Cornell’s involvement in the state budget negotiations.

Charlie Kruzansky, the associate vice president of government relations for Cornell University, gave a presentation on some of the budget discussions that Cornell is involved in. One in particular is the state of the discussion on student healthcare. Since many Cornell students (including those not at the main campus) may reside or have internships off-campus, may not be receiving the requisite care should something happen, the school is stepping in.

State legislators have had concerns with this new policy going forward, although it will not violate any state laws.

Kruzansky said that despite the growing interest in the new healthcare plan from Cornell, there have been some issues in getting it implemented. Beginning in 2012, the board, with a great deal of help from the governor’s office, spearheaded an effort to get legislation regarding the new healthcare plan approved.

The new legislation, according to Kruzansky, allowed Cornell to self-insure, which gave relief to students doing study abroad programs since the new insurance policy mostly applied to them. However, one problem was some tricky rules that are well-known in

New Roots Charter School again applies for middle school expansion

F

or the second time in as many years, New Roots Charter School has asked for permission from their state overseers to expand its student body to include sixth through eighth grades.

The school’s proposal calls for a middle school program made up of 35-40 students that would start, according to the application, in the next year or two with a single middle school class and potentially grow from there, including more staff members and teachers. The request states that the program would be housed on the second floor of

Center Ithaca on the Commons, though school founder and headmaster Tina NilsenHodges said location plans are all tentative without an approval from the SUNY-Charter School Institute (CSI), who is reviewing the proposal. She also said, as it stands now, the institute would probably weigh in on the request in fall 2019, which would obviously push back the projected start time for a program.

he dull roar of train engines has rousted several residents of the Nate’s Floral Estates development in the city’s southwestern section, with many now requesting that the city intervene to restore their chances at a peaceful sleep.

Nate’s Floral Estates is a trailer park on Cecil Malone Drive that houses over 100 units of mostly older, moderate- to low-income residents.

long noise that isn’t exactly ear-splitting, but has forced Zifchock into several sleepless nights on his couch, which is farther from the noise than his bedroom. Beyond that, vibrations from the train can even shake parts of his house while the engines are idling. Judging by the number of signatures on his petition, and a meeting with city and county officials last week that included many Nate’s residents, he is far from the only one.

“This isn’t bedrock, the trailer park isn’t sitting on super solid ground, so vibrations travel farther than they should,” Zifchock said. “That’s what it is. Even [Sunday night], it wasn’t parked right behind my joint. But it’s just this low drone, slight vibrations. In

But legislation passed last month by the global United Methodist Church poses a threat to reconciling

railroad’s new lessees potentially increasing the frequency and number of trains moving through the area, neighborhood residents are pushing back.

Nate’s resident Jim Zifchock has become the de facto spokesperson for the group of angered neighbors, authoring a petition and gathering signatures from fellow residents.

As of this week, around 30 residents have signed the petition, and Zifchock estimated that about 20 more would be joining them.

“This petition is intended to encourage our city leaders

and elected officials to help end the idling engines behind Nate’s Floral Estates,” the petition states. “The horrific noise, vibrations and poor air quality lead directly to a significant quality of life decrease, and health issues associated with lack of sleep and contaminated air. Whether through the city’s obligation to enforce their noise ordinance, or communication and agreement with train management, this issue must be resolved.”

Zifchock said the primary issue of idling train engines rattling through their houses is solely a winter problem: when trains are parked there, their engines are kept running until they are in use again hours later in order to ensure the diesel fuel that powers them is kept warm enough to avoid solidifying. Thirty years of liberal leadership

F

or the first time in 30 years, the Tompkins County Democratic Committee (TCDC) has a new leader in place, as Jim Gustafson was elected to replace longtime chair Irene Stein.

Stein voluntarily stepped down as of Feb. 1, citing personal and family health issues, leaving the post she held continuously since 1989.

The Ithaca Times sat down with Stein to let her reflect on her time at the helm of the TCDC, what she feels she got wrong and right, and the overall shifts occurring in Democratic politics here and nationwide.

On the most significant political moment in Tompkins County during her time leading the TCDC: The political committee is always changing and dynamic, just like the county’s politics are. [...] Jean McPheeters opened the party up and it became much more inclusive, and that was one very significant moment. That was around 1980, I think. We also went to court to give students the right to vote, should they chose to. That has not resulted in the massive student vote we would have thought.

However, it has resulted in very strong Democratic groups at Cornell, and to a lesser extent at Ithaca College. At Cornell, we have [had] a very, very strong Democratic committee for many, many years now that helps in our campaigns and is invaluable.

Over the years, we’ve went from very strongly Republican to very strongly Democrat.

[Democrats] now

have majorities in almost all the towns, as well as the entire city council and the mayor. We did that by a common platform of openness and transparency.

Until that time, the town, county and city government was run in a less open manner. For example, many of the towns didn’t even publish their agendas, and I think we turned that around. [...] The negative part is the same as is sweeping the rest of the country—it’s related to the demise of local newspaper coverage. That’s been a real detriment. It’s a real attack on democracy, not by intent but by actuality.

On the state of the TCDC as she departs: I feel like I’m leaving a very strong committee, and I’m very happy that we’ve now elected a successor in whom I have every confidence that he will maintain all our assets and good qualities but will do

even greater things in the future. It’s a good feeling to retire and know that you’re leaving a good organization under leadership that will surely help it continue to thrive. [...]

We want our committee to look more like the Democrats of Tompkins County than it does currently. It’s been a very glorious type of work. Though some of the duties are inclined to be a little bit hum-drum, it’s what democracy is all about.

We’re really on the first line of defense.

On regrets she has from her tenure as chair of the TCDC: I probably could fill a book. I think I was probably slow to recognize the need to respond more aggressively to needing more diversity, though I think once I understood the situation, I responded strongly.

I could always have done better in every respect I suppose, but I did my very best and I think the proof is in the pudding. We’ve been very successful, and it’s not just me, it’s “we.”

On Tompkins County’s evolution into a liberal stronghold surrounded by conservative counties, and upstate politics in general:

About 20 years ago, our rural counties were totally ignored by our elected officials, by our state committees, so we banded together and formed a conference that consists of the county chairs and state committee people in the 47 smaller counties. We’ve had a lot of successes, like in Tompkins County this past summer, we heard from all four of the candidates on the Democratic slate for Attorney General; 20 years ago, that would never have happened. It’s easy to be ignored when you have lesser votes. [...] I don’t want [Tompkins County] to continue being an island. I want others to join us. [...] I’d like to see us, and by us I mean all Democrats across the state, focus on identifying which independent voters lean or support us, and make sure we do a good job of getting them to the polls as well. It’s that kind of thing that I’m always thinking about.

On being part of the “political establishment” as resentment toward the establishment builds: Here’s what happened: A lot of people joined our committee, we were very welcoming. A few of them dropped off because they discovered the committee was not what they had thought.

That is to say they had some general stereotypes in their heads that were not the case.

They found out that we were very, very Democratic, and we’re working together very smoothly with people who have come in over the last few years. That’s worked out very well. I do want to point out some accomplishments. Being a woman and holding office in this county is not an issue, and that was not always the case. Now it’s not even an issue since there are so many women.

We’ve increased our diversity among office holders considerably, we elected the first female mayor and the first black mayor in this county, so those are achievements of the TCDC of which I’m very proud.

His reported declaration upon winning? “I’m the baddest dude in the world.” ▶▶ Thumbs Down- Does it seem like the water main break on the 200 block of Cayuga Street, which will shut down that block for the next few months, is getting worse? On Tuesday, not only was the 200 block of Cayuga Street still blocked, but it was joined for a portion of the day by an adjacent block of Seneca Street as well.

At this point, we know it’s hard to blame anybody for decades old infrastructure.

But going through downtown Ithaca isn’t getting easier soon. ▶▶ Seen- Congratulations to the Cornell women’s hockey team on a successful season which ended this past Friday after a loss in the national semifinal game to the University of Minnesota. The Big Red had already dispatched third-seeded Northeastern, but fell short 2-0 against the Gophers, who were ranked second in the tournament. Their male counterparts play this Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against Northeastern in Providence.

Stay Cool (And Dry), Jay-Z

or some, it is easy to shy away from the reality of the racial division that plagues this country and ripples into our neighborhoods, our communities, and our personal lives. It is also easy to deny that people of good intention — even those in our faith communities — unknowingly participate in maintaining this divide.

However, some of us are willing to face this reality and embark on a journey of truth whether it is easy or not; some of us realize that we must find the courage to confront the things that divide us so that instead of standing apart, we can stand together The Seminar on Wheels: A History of Slavery and Racial Injustice, sponsored by Friends Center for Racial Justice (Quaker) and the First Presbyterian Church of Ithaca, provided the opportunity to take a journey of truth. A group of twenty-nine interracial, interfaith and intergenerational people from Ithaca and surrounding areas traveled south by bus for eight days, all committed to expanding their understanding of the institution of slavery and how it set the stage for present-day oppression and racial injustice.

Throughout the seminar, participants learned from one another and came to agree that the tragic and gut-wrenching history of slavery must be internalized deeply by all before healing can take place. The white participants started to see how critical it is for their communities to educate themselves about explicit and implicit racism, white privilege, and ingrained feelings of cultural superiority; they began to recognize the damaging effect of racial indifference and how it is the fuel that continues to power racism and racial inequality. The black participants began to trust that this type of learning can, in fact, take place and that our continued work together, black and white, is about our humanity, our com-

atkins Glen, Ithaca’s neighbor 25 miles west, will be the focus of the music world this August as the site of Woodstock 50, a three-day music festival celebrating the half-century anniversary of the iconic 1969 upstate New York concert.

The festival promoters chose this Finger Lakes village (with its large, employable Nascar racetrack) as a better location for their event than anyplace in the Catskills, home of the original show.

It’s a big deal for the small community.

Watkins Glen has a population of about 2,000. Woodstock 50 might bring 50 times more.

The roster of musicians was recently announced. It is an impressive array of stars, old and new (old, including Melanie and Santana; new, such as Halsey and Chance the Rapper).

The event is capped the final night by the rapper Jay-Z. Jay-Z is possibly the most acclaimed and moneyed male performer in the world. When I saw that he would be in Watkins Glen, my thoughts about the event were eclipsed by a large single question: Where will Jay-Z stay?

Jay-Z came up in poverty (near me, in fact, in ragged east Brooklyn), but it’s probably a long time since he has stayed anywhere less exclusive or expensive than, say, a Ritz-Carlton, which to him with his earnings might be like a park bench with newspaper covers to me with mine; and there is no Ritz-Carlton in Watkins Glen, nor within 200 miles of it.

I mentioned my concern to my friend Zach, who is a touring musician, and he said don’t worry, Jay-Z will probably helicopter in and out.

This was comforting to realize, except that the nearest commercial airport for Jay-Z to land a private plane and pick up a helicopter is in Horseheads, which he and his people will need to realize is a real place.

Traveling to this billion dollar bash of a concert might pose problems for others, anyone not airborne, but driving.

Watkins Glen is remote. The closest interstates are between 20 and 60 miles away, depending on direction, and are linked to the village by state routes that are fairly described as country roads, one lane each way for the most part, which might be serviceable normally, but maybe not when 50,000 vehicles are added.

Despite the potential problems and complications, a destination like this concert might be fun or easy enough to join if you’re young, or full of zest for high adventure.

Once I was both, which manifested in various ways, but only on one occasion by attending a big outdoor concert such as this.

The event was in Englishtown, New Jersey: like Woodstock 50, at a racetrack.

My colleagues and I arrived the night before and slept on the ground on blankets. Tents at concerts were uncommon back then.

I woke at dawn to see a scene like a Civil War encampment, a sprawl of ill-equipped and motley troops doing nothing but waiting for something to happen, whenever someone in charge said it would.

Like tents, bottled water was uncommon in those days. We brought a few gallons, primarily to thwart desiccation and enact random hygiene, not to sip or enjoy.

Mostly we drank warm colas, which we occasionally blended with vodka, a transformative concoction our group collectively extolled as not too strong, not too sweet, and not too good.

Concert concessions are better today to the point of no comparison, but a crucial component of comfort that can’t be controlled is climate.

At one possible extreme in summer in the Finger Lakes is torrential rain.

Another is blazing heat. I don’t know how much shelter or shade will be available at the Woodstock racetrack, but refunds no doubt won’t be.

Weather issues also exist for our local GrassRoots Festival, in Trumansburg each July since 1992; but the hosting Fairgrounds date from 1850, and have massive strands of old, protective shade trees, and the festival has covered areas for rain, and local fire trucks circle the grounds and spout streams of water when it’s hot.

Watkins Glen is a lovely, cordial neighbor to Ithaca, and we wish them good things and good luck in this Woodstock 50 enterprise.

Of course, it’s a big-time gamble. It’s a good kind of gamble, though, because it’s non-zero-sum: if it’s a winner, everybody wins. If it fails, everyone loses; but at least the loss is shared.

The sun shines, or rain falls, on everyone the same. Let’s hope for good weather and good times with all our musical exploits this summer.

All participants recognize that racism persists, and the brutality of hate against black Americans, has not stayed in the past, nor was it ever limited to the South as many still think. It is difficult to ascertain the exact number of black American deaths by the hands of white racists since many of these deaths have not been recorded. Nonetheless, the estimations and dates below might be helpful.

According to the Tuskegee Institute, between 1860 and 1968, throughout the United States, close to 5,000 lynchings of black Americans occurred. These lynchings were public acts of terror. Hanging, tar and feathering, drowning, beating, mutilation, the bombing of black homes and black churches, car dragging and shooting were only some of the ways the executions of black Americans were carried out. The latest recorded lynching of black Americans took place in Oklahoma, in May 2018. In June 2017, someone placed a noose on one of the exhibits at

the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Within the same week, a second noose was found on the grounds of this renowned institute.

The numbers above do not reflect the millions of deaths that took place while Europeans were capturing Africans or the deliberate killings that took place during the transatlantic slave trade and within the system of slavery itself.

Many of our black leaders and thinkers of today work tirelessly, trying to create awareness of the seriousness and destructiveness of racism. Their passionate words resonate with those of us who continue struggling to close the racial divide: Michelle Alexander, The New Jim Crow “It is this failure to care, really care across color lines, that lies at the core of this system of control and every racial caste system that has existed in the United States or anywhere else in the world.”

Since then, Zifchock has sought help from the city and Watco, though with varying degrees of success so far. Common Council member Cynthia Brock, whose district includes Nate’s Floral Estates, has become involved in the proceedings as well, trying to advocate on behalf of the residents.

Zifchock believes he might have a case since the trains aren’t moving, and thus aren’t in operation, but it remains to be seen whether or not the city can actually act on that, or is willing to. Beyond that, he said the city should enforce its noise ordinances at the very least; though he acknowledges a few minor fines probably wouldn’t deter Watco, at least it might provide some leverage.

Potentially compounding the problem, Zifchock and Brock both said that from what they understand, Watco intends to significantly increase the frequency of trains, coinciding with a planned rebuild of the trainyard over the next two summers. Even though as the weather warms, Zifchock might be free of the idling engines, it seems likely there will be a subsequent impact on vehicular traffic as more trains with more cars pass through the city.

“It really comes down to the largesse of the train company to modify their activi-

ties or not,” Brock said. “We should expect them to be very, very active in our area. [...] Under previous activities, it used to be maybe 18 or 20. Now, we’re looking at 45, maybe upwards of 50, trains.”

But Brock did not sound optimistic that there was much the city could do outside of hoping that Watco make some of the tweaks that Norfolk Southern was willing to, like moving the trains a bit farther down the tracks away from residences. The increase in train frequency, it sounds like, is inevitable, but whether or not Watco decides to listen to residents is anything but.

“My hope is that Watco will see the volume of individuals that are affected by their actions,” Brock said. “I do believe that Watco wants to be a good partner with the city. I’m hopeful that they will have an opportunity to get to know the people who live next door and see if there are ways that they can modify their actions to be more accommodating to their neighbors’ lives.”

As for the city’s reluctance to address the ongoing issues, Zifchock compared it to football, using the futility of the Buffalo Bills versus the New England Patriots over the last two or so decades to illustrate that even if there’s not much hope, the city has an obligation to its residents to try.

“The city thinks they’ve got no pull,” Zifchock said. “They think it’s a losing battle. I say when the Bills go to New England and they’re getting 18 points, they don’t not show up. They show up and try hard, they play. They don’t just phone it in.”

New York State, which are that no current insurance policy can be sold in the state that is not compliant with the Affordable Care Act. Kruzansky acknowledged that while this is a good policy, the flaw to it is when special types of coverage, such as the emergency medical travel insurance needed by Cornell, may not have everything the ACA requires in an insurance plan. Some of the items that ACA plans need to have are mental health, child care and dental coverage. This policy didn’t intend to require those types of coverages. Even though the rule is not technically a law, there has been some pushback from state officials.

The board, though, is not unfamiliar with this fight, as they encountered similar problems getting athletic injury coverage.

Since the coverage is different from what a regular student would require, it would not be compliant with the ACA. Another issue with getting the new insurance policy established was the geographical differences that Cornell’s three campuses have.

In addition to their home in Ithaca, Cornell would have to implement this policy for students at their biomedical college and Cornell Tech in New York City. Discussions regarding the implementation of the policy will continue in the coming months.

The board seemed certain that, similar to budgets from previous years, the rate of growth for state and local governments will remain at two percent.

During the second open session, Cornell University President Martha Pollack addressed several items affecting the school currently.

She addressed the recent college admission scandal that has plagued many esteemed institutions. Pollack, who finds the entire issue appalling and despicable, has gone through the school’s policies to ensure something like that cannot happen at Cornell. Pollack also announced that no one from Cornell has any involvement in the scandal, although one alum was caught making payments to other schools, according to the Cornell Daily Sun. Following this, she went on to debut a new website to allow students to get more information about certain programs not just in Ithaca, but around the world. spassed by the City of Ithaca Common Council will keep plenty of students residing in off-campus housing safe from being penalized for any legislative wrongdoing on behalf of the landlord.

Once Pollack concluded speaking, Varun Devatha, the leader of the Student Assembly, gave an update on some of the yearly initiatives they have been working on. One major item Devatha spoke about was about the student health fee. After the student assembly polled the campus, they found that a majority of students were in favor of raising the fee by $20-30. Most other votes in the poll were in favor of using the money to get increased mental health services on campus.

Some future initiatives the student assembly is bringing to the campus are “Free the Tampon,” which is an effort to get tampons and pads into restrooms across the campus, and an investigation into the transfer and underrepresentation of minority students.

Next was the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly, led by Ekarina Winarto, which has been working throughout the year to revise the Graduate and Professional Community Initiative. Established in 2013, the GPCI is a plan to address critical issues affecting graduate and professional student life at Cornell. However, it has come to Winarto’s attention that this plan needs to be redrafted to include some new issues such as family services, transportation, career development, mental health and wellbeing, diversity, international student affairs.

Finally came Matthew Battaglia, leader of the University Assembly, to address some of the issues they tackled throughout the year. He spoke about how changes to the campus code of conduct are a necessary action the University Assembly has been dealing with all year. One of the big changes being made is to the language so that it is easier to read for students, professors, and administrators. Additionally, the University Assembly has been pushing to get the provisions regarding stalking and harassment updated.

Most of the speakers saw the goals of Cornell’s future as increasing student involvement in campus affairs in addition to circulating surveys regarding tobacco and other health-related issues.

Johannes Reinhardt’s Exquisite Wines

B y D av e S i t magine for a minute that you are the owner of a factory that makes, say, ball bearings. A few weeks before the completion of the manufacturing process, you tell the factory manager to throw out 50 percent of the almost-finished ball bearings. Sounds crazy? But that’s exactly what Johannes Reinhardt, the owner and winemaker of Kemmeter Wines in Penn Yann, does in his vineyard every year: 45 percent in 2016 and a whopping 60 percent in 2017.

This vineyard crop-thinning practice is called green harvest, or “vendange verte” in French. Performed usually six to eight weeks before harvest, the grower walks through the vineyard and examines each vine. Clusters which are deemed deficient in ripening or unhealthy are cut off by hand and discarded. In vigorous vintages, healthy clusters are likewise cut off to limit 8 T

the yield. By doing so, each vine can then focus its nutrients and joie de vivre on the remaining clusters, resulting in higherquality grapes. The practice’s upside is an increase in grape quality, the downside is you wind up with less wine.

Green harvest is not that uncommon, but the severe degree to which Reinhardt executes it is. It’s part of his painstaking pursuit of quality.

To understand how Reinhardt wound up in the Finger Lakes, you have to travel back over 600 years in time to Germany.

Reinhardt is a descendant on the maternal side of the storied Kemmeter family in the Franconia region. The Kemmeters have been farming and winegrowing for over 600 years, as evidenced by a 1438 royal proclamation from Emperor Albrecht II, which recognized the family’s contribution and bestowed it a family crest.

Reinhardt. His siblings, two sisters and an older brother, grew up in the small village of Neuses Am Berg. When his older brother died unexpectedly at the early age of 13, Reinhardt was suddenly thrust into the role of having to eventually assume the mantle of the family business.

After high school, Reinhardt began an arduous seven-year education and apprenticeship program in viticulture and oenology in Germany. Upon his graduation with an advanced degree from the Bavarian State Research Center for Viticulture in Veitshöchheim in 1992, he returned home to work at his family winery.

But things went badly.

As Reinhardt assumed more responsibilities, conflicts with his parents on how the winery should be run became a frequent occurrence. His parents, laden with a centuries-long tradition of winegrowing, were resistant to change. But Reinhardt, from a newer generation of winemakers,

wanted to make the best wines possible.

To do so, he pushed to reduce yield. His parents resisted. Their relationship became increasingly tense and strained but continued for three years.

“I would look at myself in my bathroom mirror at night and cry,” Reinhardt said. “I began questioning my life, even God. Can I live my life this way?”

Considered the “softie” among the children, he was also chastened by his incessant arguments with his parents. He shook his head and added, “I thought God would not be happy with the way I treated them.”

Feeling trapped with no way out, Reinhardt took the only path he thought available. In October of 1995, he abruptly packed up and left. Reinhardt moved in with a friend in Munich. For a few months he did odd jobs for a living. But in his heart, he knew his place in life was growing and making wine. He found a job in 1996 at Schlossgut Hohenbeilstein, an or-

ganic winery in Württemberg. There, he had a wonderful working relationship with the owner, Hartmann Dippon.

“It was an important experience working with Hartmann,” Reinhardt reminisced. “Besides new methods of growing and making wine, I benefited from Hartmann’s kindness and humility.”

After spending a couple of years with Dippon, Reinhardt wanted to expand his skills by working in other parts of the world. He answered an ad from Dr. Konstantin Frank in the Finger Lakes and signed up as the vineyard manager for the 1999 vintage for Chateau Frank, the sparkling wine house of Dr. Frank.

Reinhardt returned to Germany after his stint at Chateau Frank and began working for a winery in Baden. He quickly became disillusioned because of the commercialism there, and it seemed like he would have to move on again. Then came a phone call that would point him in a lifechanging direction.

John Martini was a sales executive with the W.R. Grace Corporation in Baltimore in the early ‘70s when he decided to quit the rat race and bought a vineyard on Anthony Road in Penn Yan. In 2000, he needed a new winemaker. Two friends from the local wine community, Peter Bell from Fox Run Vineyards and Dr. Thomas Henick Kling from Cornell’s Geneva Experiment Station, suggested Reinhardt for the job.

Martini called Reinhardt in Germany and invited him to come to the Finger Lakes to visit Anthony Road in person.

Martini picked up Reinhardt at the airport. Both men hit it off right away after they discovered their mutual love for classical music when the car radio came on. At Anthony Road, Reinhardt finally had the opportunity to make wines worthy of his standards, as Martini gave him free rein.

Before long, Reinhardt quickly earned a reputation as one of the best winemakers in the Finger Lakes.

“Johannes really raised the overall quality of our wines because of his work ethics and attention to details,” Martini recalled.

One of the major achievements during Reinhardt’s time at Anthony Road was the creation of Tierce, a Riesling collaboration between three wineries: Anthony Road, Fox Run and Red Newt.

Peter Bell, the long-time winemaker at Fox Run, said, “Tierce was conceived

by Johannes, and when he mentioned the idea to me I was instantly on board. Working with him on this project was always great fun. He is about as congenial a person as you will ever meet.”

“The fruit determines the wine; the cliché ‘great wines are made in the vineyard’ is true,” Reinhardt said to explain his philosophy. “The vines must be healthy. Each of my 1100 vines are cared for individually, down to the single clusters. I make decisions on each cluster, as they might mature differently, sometimes within even a single vine.”

It is this kind of meticulousness that makes Reinhardt such a renowned vigneron. In 2014, he was named by Vineyard & Winery Management Magazine as one of the 20 Most Admired Winemakers in America in a poll taken by stakeholders in the wine business.

In person, Johannes Reinhardt is a tall, self-effacing and earnest man. Humility and focus are two words often used by his friends and colleagues in describing him. He told me one of the things that shaped him was his enlightenment on the true meaning of religion over time. “Not so much in an organized religion way, but to follow Jesus’ example by living a more spiritual life instead of pursuing worldly possessions.”

He has also long since reconciled with his family in Germany. “My parents were raised during wartime and the post-war period. They couldn’t throw anything away, so the concept of reducing yield was unacceptable to them,” Reinhardt said.

“I am sure they were doing what they thought was the best for me back then.”

He added, “I learned a lot from my father, especially on the importance of cleanliness in the cellar.”

When you walk into Kemmeter Wines’ jewel box-like tasting room, you notice right away how tidily-organized it is.

Bottles are lined up neatly on the shelves.

It accommodates only six guests. Tastings are by appointment only and could last up to an hour. When you taste wines with Reinhardt, you can’t help but get drawn in by his passion and deep knowledge.

At this stage of his life, Reinhardt is happy and content. He has found his true love in his wife Imedla. His dream of owning a vineyard and making wines of uncompromising standards has been realized. And he has found his home—it’s in the Finger Lakes, where he can make superior wines, one vintage after another.

A Pipeline and a Lifeline

’m a big fan of school spirit, but when six teams of collegiate gymnasts (and their coaches and fans) are packed into one arena, every time one of them sticks a landing there is a chorus of deafening screams that reverberates off the walls. Six teams, four events (vault, beam, uneven bars and floor exercise). I loved watching Cornell host the ECAC Championships, but my ears are still ringing.

Cornell, Brown, Penn, Temple, William & Mary and Yale would take part in the annual event, and while the Big Red would have preferred to finish higher than fourth as a team, they did have two individual champs. Sara Maughan took top honors in the vault with a 9.825, a career-best that came at a most opportune time. Izzy Herczeg won the floor exercise in grand fashion, nailing a 9.9 and a 10.0 from the two judges. It was only the second perfect

10 scored by a judge in Big Red history.

I always enjoy these meets, as many of my gymnast friends from my time at Cornell Athletics make the trip. They connect with Betsy East, their coach from the 1980s, who’s very proud of their career accomplishments. Doctors, financial analysts, engineers—they all have made their mark, and now some are giving back.

Kelley McGoldrick (CU class of ‘86) was there, as usual, but she was not just an alumna enjoying the meet. As a professional woman who has spent 30 years working in the male-dominated financial planning industry, Kelley is doing her part to give female athletes enhanced tools to navigate the maze of connecting to the workforce.

McGoldrick’s increased involvement grew out of a conversation with Christina Luniewicz, a Cornell gymnast (‘19) who works in the alumni office. Christina told Kelley, “We want help from former women’s gymnasts. Who’s available?” That question was a great springboard, as after the ECAC meet, recruits were addressed

by McGoldrick (a chartered financial analyst), Ellen Mayer (a cardiologist), and Ann Pierce (an engineering grad who is now a consultant) and the seeds have been planted for more alumni to share their talents, experience and connections.

Kelley said, “Like many universities, Cornell has plenty of central career resources, and each college has its own resources (engineering, arts & sciences, human ecology, etc.), but these systems are much more established for male athletes.”

She added, “For years, I have wanted to recruit female athletes to work in finance, which is about 85 percent male, and I have wondered, ‘Where is that channel?’ We need better ways to connect with female athletes.” She continued, “There are more women in the medical and legal fields now, and we are trying to use the systems that the male athletes have in place that are working for them. A fellow Cornell alum was a football player here, and he comes every year to recruit male athletes, and another alumnus said to me, “I want to recruit female athletes. I like the level of perseverance they bring.”

In addition to helping young athletes find their professional niche, McGoldrick sees value in getting them connected to a wide array of professionals because, in her

words, “For a 20-year-old, it can be just as valuable to learn what you don’t want to do.”

In the interest of time and resourceefficiency, Kelley says, “Steering them in a different direction can be very helpful sometimes.”

Betsy East, who left coaching and spent the last 25 years of her career working for Cornell in various administrative positions, is pleased to see this effort being put forth. “These mentorships are very helpful,” the former coach shared. “It’s great for these athletes to see successful women in the workplace, and for them to be able to say, ‘I can do this.’ It’s all about relationships.”

••• Denim & Diamonds: Nineteen years ago, Scott Thompson, Cornell’s men’s basketball coach, was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer, and he and a core group of supporters initiated a fast break to help not only Thompson, but many others since then. (I am happy to report that Thompson made a full recovery, and that event has raised north of a million dollars over the years.)

“The event started out with a Mardi Gras theme,” said Bill Perkins, who along with his wife, Colleen, has been one of the workhorses since the first year. “It evolved into the Community and Coaches vs. Cancer, and this is the first year it will be Denim and Diamonds theme.” Perkins laughed and said, “We’re giving it a little touch of country!” He also thanked longtime co-chair Richie Moran and others like Amy Little and Carol and Pete Noyes.

congregations like St. Paul’s, whose progressivism has drawn resistance from less tolerant factions of the denomination and led to a church-wide schism.

From Feb. 23-26, the General Conference of the United Methodist Church was held in St. Louis with a focus on evaluating plans for restructuring due to the church’s division on inclusivity. By a vote of 438 to 384, they passed the Traditional Plan, which, if implemented in its entirety on Jan. 1, 2020, will more severely prohibit LGBTQ+ clergy and same-sex marriages by enhancing discriminatory language added to the Book of Discipline in 1972 that states that “the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching.”

In attendance as volunteers, and wearing rainbows in support of the reconciling movement, were St. Paul’s Pastor Teressa Sivers and laity Jamie Breedlove and Diana Crouch. All three were fearful of the conference’s outcome: As a global organization with foreign contingents that hold some deeply conservative views, the UMC has a history of division on issues of social justice. Still, they were hopeful for progress.

When the Traditional Plan passed, Sivers said, anguish spread across the stadium serving as the conference’s venue. “What struck with me the most […] was that this cry rose up from maybe three or four

people,” said Sivers, who was appointed to St. Paul’s last July. “These people began to cry ‘No, no, no,’ and the heart in their voice was just broken. You could hear it.

And I still hear it in my dreams at night.

It’s really haunting. And I think that was the essence of it […] it broke their heart.”

A Feb. 27 joint press release by St. Paul’s and fellow UMC member Forest Home Chapel stated that the conference’s decision is “out of alignment with the belief systems and mission of the two United Methodist congregations in Ithaca.”

“There are a lot of folks that feel betrayed and angry, abandoned,” Dolch said.

Channeling her emotions into action, on the morning of Feb. 27, Dolch, who identifies as queer, hung a rainbow flag over the “United Methodist Church” portion of the church’s Court Street sign, leaving only “St. Paul’s.” The image reflects a rapidly-growing reconciling movement within the UMC, with some churches even breaking away from the denomination altogether.

Hope remains from St. Paul’s and other reconciling congregations is that the UMC will soon change its intolerant policies.

In April, the UMC’s Judicial Council will evaluate which parts of the Traditional Plan are unconstitutional, and a ruling will be made in May as to what can be implemented in January 2020. (Additionally, some of the ruling may be subject to a civil court suit relating to the physical properties of the individual churches that leave or are asked to leave the UMC.) Further changes can be made in the May 2020 general conference.

Breedlove explains that the sentiment behind the Traditional Plan isn’t anything new. Rather, the recent vote brought it to life.

“People all over are going to say, ‘Why do we have the United Methodist Church if they’re going to act like this? Why do you stay in the United Methodist Church if they’re going to act like this?’” she said.

“So, it’s just, I think, more of an awareness.

It’s been going around for a long time, but now all of this has come to the surface, and so it will be hard to get it back in the bottle. It will be hard to put the top back on it the same way that it was before.”

school enrollment.”

Last year, the school had also announced its intention to apply for a middle school in a press release with the Ithaca City School District (ICSD), but subsequently withdrew the request after one month; that proposal asked for permission to start a middle school program for 60 students instead of 35-40. Nilsen-Hodges said the timing for the middle school proposal wasn’t right, and subsequent correspondence between the school and the Charter School Institute obtained by a FOIL request also show there were significant concerns about New Roots’

performance to that point.

“Academic, legal and fiscal staff reviewed New Roots’ request for a middle school program, and concluded that the school’s existing academic program was not strong enough to expand to middle school grades until such time as the 9-12 program shows improvement in the Accountability Plan metrics and the LEAP program demonstrates successful acceleration of the learning of enrolled students,” a letter sent from CSI to New Roots’ Board of Trustees president Jason Hamilton in July 2018 read in response to the former middle school request and questions about the LEAP program. “Given the school’s lowered enrollment over time and enrollment below its chartered enrollment, the

institute also has some concern about the investment needed to start a new middle school program.”

Nilsen-Hodges, when interviewed, disputed the institute’s enrollment comments.

The middle school program would effectively be building upon the LEAP program the school was already running as a high school preparation program, introduced in 2017. Nilsen-Hodges clarified that while the LEAP program, which was actually the subject of a lawsuit filed

by ICSD that claimed the program was being illegally run outside of New Roots’ authority and used to boost enrollment numbers, was thought to have been shut down by CSI. But the school modified it to satisfy their charter requirements by only

accepting kids who had either completed or attended eighth grade elsewhere. And while New Roots certainly has its critics, some of whom are on the ICSD Board of Education and have made their thoughts well known, it also has plenty of support among parents of some of its students, who inundated the CSI with letters of support for both the LEAP program and the middle school aspirations.

The July letter from CSI further expressed apprehension about the success of the LEAP program’s attempts to prepare students for high school classes, as well as the impact that a middle school would have on the high school.

“Given the needs for improvement, combined with the lack of any evidence provided by the school in its original request showing the success of the LEAP program which had been underway for two years at the time of the request, New Roots does not have the legal authority to serve middle school grades whether in the LEAP or otherwise even if it does not bill districts for the students,” the letter to Hamilton concludes. “Most importantly, academic program staff at the institute, in the absence of additional high school data, remain unconvinced that the high school program at New Roots will not be diminished by the addition of a middle school program or expanded LEAP program.”

Nilsen-Hodges rebutted that having a middle school would erase the effect of having to change schools to come to New Roots, potentially providing more stability for students. The Institute’s letter does seem to leave the door open for future consideration of an expansion plan “after improved outcomes,” and Nilsen-Hodges believe the school has achieved just that.

She produced data she plans to submit to CSI that appears to show LEAP has produced positive results, particularly compared to other students coming from other schools to New Roots for high school: all former LEAP students in ninth grade are passing math, while 62 percent of nonLEAP students are passing; 94 percent are passing science, compared to 70 percent of non-LEAP, etc.

“Their experience and success in ninth grade is really demonstrating the value of that program,” Nilsen-Hodges said.

“Across the board, those LEAP students are passing their core subject area coursework in their first semester of high school, and that students who are coming to us from other regional districts are not similarly prepared to perform at that level.”

The numbers give Nilsen-Hodges optimism that the Charter School Institute will be convinced of New Roots’ acumen, the current middle school proposal will be approved and that New Roots will be able to expand its academic offerings in the near future.

“Absolutely, all of our high school performance data being strong, as well as these outcomes from LEAP allow the SUNY staff to make a strong case to the committee on charter schools for approval of the middle school program,” NilsenHodges said.

Local Dog Whisperer Recognized with Maxwell Medallion

If so, the problem may be no more than a simple matter of miscommunication.

“Dogs are not ethical” said Dr. Laura Donaldson, the official behavior and training consultant for Cayuga Dog Rescue. Laughing, she adds “They are opportunistic.” Donaldson won a Maxwell Medallion for best magazine article on dog behavior and training this past year for a feature article in Chronicle of the Dog Magazine, “The Cognitive Revolution and Every Day Dog Training: The Case of Look at That.”

A Maxwell Medallion is a high honor in the field of animal cognition study, that is national in scope and highly competitive, given by the Dog Writers Association of America. The DWAA is an organization dating back to 1935 that is dedicated to promoting journalistic excellence on all things canine, and Donaldson said she is proud to represent the Ithaca area at such a high level in her field.

Regarding the award, she said that it was “wonderful” to receive such positive validation

from her peer community. However, it seems that for the average dog owner, and the dog training community at large, there are still a lot of antiquated thinking and practices that need to be unlearned before more progress can be made in the relationships people have with their dogs. “Dog risk assessment is really bad,” Donaldson said. “They have a distorted perception of their environment, and that is where we can really help them if we can understand.”

She continued to describe how the more negative methods that people use to communicate with dogs, such as jerking leashes and raising their voices, are detrimental to dogs’ mental health.

Moreover, there is also a plethora of everyday objects and noises that upset dogs and that most dog owners are likely unaware of.

For example, Donaldson mentioned that plastic shopping bags are actually a very common stressor for dogs. Between the shuffling noise they make, and the way they reflect light erratically, plastic bags are difficult for dogs to process. She used this example to illustrate the training method she outlines in her article. Essentially, conventional dog training would use counter conditioning to help a dog overcome a fear of a shopping bag. This technique involves simply giving the dog positive experiences in the presence of a plastic bag. While this methodology is highly effective in humans, it is only about half as effective in dogs. Instead, Donaldson focuses on what is referred

to as modified counter conditioning, which involves not only giving the dog positive experiences in the presence of a stressor, but actively drawing their attention to the stressor as well, rather than relying on the dog to notice it incidentally. Dubbed the “Look at That method,” Donaldson was careful to point out that modified counter conditioning has not yet been tested in an ideal experimental setting, but nevertheless, the anecdotal results have been extremely positive. In her own words, “If it works for the dogs, it works for me.”

As for the next steps in her research, Dr. Donaldson is interested in continuing to explore the cognitive disconnect between people and dogs. She specifically mentioned the possibility of studying the effectiveness of interactive games, and comparing it with that of more conventional obedience models.

Donaldson also has tentative plans for a book in the near future. In the meantime, her hands are full with her consulting practice.

Speaking more broadly about the future, she said, “I love writing, I love research, but right now I really just want to help people in their everyday lives with dogs.”

Ithaca Times: I must have never seen you in a variety show format, because I knew you more as a host and personality than a singer. What are you doing at CRT?

“That’s Incredible,” and he was making movies on the Disney lot when Disney was alive. Now, Davidson is bringing his guitar and his show biz stories to CRT

John Davidson: I guess I started as a singer, but I was hosting “That’s Incredible” and “The Hollywood Squares.” I became more of a host because that’s what people wanted, and you can’t sing on those shows as much [laughs]. But my greatest love is singing, and especially with my

guitar. I play six-string guitar, 12-string guitar, and banjo. I sing original tunes and pop music covers from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, and I talk about my take on life after 50 years in show business. It’s a highenergy show. I never sit down. I’m not one of those guitar players who sits on a stool.

I’m in and out of the audience a lot with a wireless mic and headset. It’s aimed at people over 50, because they’re the people that remember my career.

IT: I was born in 1963, so you’ve been around pretty much my whole life.

JD: An early manager said to me, “Don’t just be a knife or a spear.” He said, “You can be a Swiss Army knife. [laughs] So, instead of just being a spear, be a jack of all trades.” So, when game shows came along, I said “Yeah, I can do that.” Playing Las Vegas, I’ve done Shakespeare, I’ve done Broadway and Broadway musicals, I just toured in “Wicked” and “Finding Neverland.” I’m old-school in that I think a singing entertainer should be able to do it all, to do ladies’ luncheons and Shakespeare and beauty pageants and game shows.

IT: You’ve done so many different things in your career. Are there similarities, or is each gig its own puzzle?

JD: I think the bottom thing would be to get to some sort of honesty about human feelings and about what it is to be alive, and to interact with other people, and to try to portray the reality of life.

I’m always trying to see what is real here.

What does it mean when you say “I love you”? What does it mean when you say “I hate you”? I’m constantly trying to figure out the answer to the question “What the fuck are we doing here?” [laughs]

IT: In the game show genre, you took on “Pyramid,” one of my favorite game shows. In fact, you’ve made a career of taking the reins from some pretty iconic hosts.

JD: I stepped into so many shoes: Carson’s shoes and [original “Hollywood Squares” host] Peter Marshall’s shoes and Dick Clark’s shoes. I did a lot of tours of “The Music Man” playing Professor Harold Hill, where I was filling Robert Preston’s shoes. I took over for Mike Douglas on his daytime talk show, so I was in Mike Douglas’s shoes. I think you realize that you’ve got to bring your own shoes.

What I was doing was my bad impression of Peter Marshall, my bad impression of Carson [laughs], my bad impression of Dick Clark. I’m in awe of these guys. I steal attitudes and ways of doing things.

I think imitation is the greatest form of flattery. That’s how I’ve grown in my career from the very beginning, is watching great actors, great hosts and great singers and ask, “What of that could I use?” So you do a little bit of what they did, but you try to make it honest for you. That’s the deal.

he work of local folk-abstractionist sculptor Gerry Monaghan, the Futures Gallery is an informal curatorial project making use of the distinctly marginal second floor space belonging to Autumn Leaves Used Books and shared with the Ten Forward Café. For the Futures’ inaugural March show, Monaghan has made an auspicious choice in Cortland artist Tobias Inigo. The show lasts until March 30.

A painter, draftsman, and cartoonist of unusual inventiveness, Inigo appeared on the Ithaca scene, seemingly out of nowhere, a couple years ago with a small show at Sunny Days, a gift shop featuring area artisans as well a generally middling selection of “fine art.” Last summer, he was part of a memorable, if loosely cohesive, four-person new members’ exhibit at the State of the Art Gallery. (Inigo, unfortunately, is no longer part of the cooperative.)

For “Foreverbearing,” Inigo is showing works on paper, most previously exhibited, covering characteristic themes. A generous selection of watercolor tree “portraits,” a signature, are joined by a scattering of more traditional landscapes, narrative scenes, and expressive ink caricatures. Pieces have been

hung over and around the wall-spanning back bookshelf with others resting atop it, propped up amidst the potted plants.

Previously exhibited, “Cliffhanger” remains perhaps the most memorable of Inigo’s arboreal personages. Rendered in a densely textured skein of black and nearblack spots and threads, the fat, barren trunk leans left, hauling up its roots. Inigo has cropped the aged tree along the left edge of the sheet, adding to the unstable and in-your-face nature of the portrayal.

The tree blends in with the mottled, stony ground, accented in rhythmic blades of grass. The picture is predominantly blackand-white but ghostly, amorphous spots of dark- and yellow-green evoke moss, while watery blue-gray shadows the horizon of an otherwise empty white sky.

Other tree portraits demonstrate the expressive scope of the genre. “In the Bleak Midwinter” and “Turbulent Autumn” show the same skeletal silhouetted trunk, looking up, with differing light and atmosphere. “A Long Time Standing” is another old-timer, highlighting Inigo’s facility with less than sentimental views of nature. “The Three Sisters” appear to be identical triplets; their more stereotyped depiction ties it to the

artists “far away” landscapes, along with pieces like “Day Tripping” and “View from the Valley,” which trade detail and solidity for blurs of color.

A new work, “Rowan - A Mother’s Tear” is another standout. Echoing East Asian composition, a decorative procession of skinny mottled green leaves fills the top of the large, vertical sheet. They surround a cluster of crimson and orange-red berries – suspended like a cloud. Left-of-center, these drizzle what looks like a bloody tear. The rest of the sheet is clean white.

Inigo’s work here is characteristically rich and engaging. The homely presentation fits the café-bookshop setting without insulting the art. (Admittedly getting yourself in front of particular pieces might take

some maneuvering.) Browsing the paintings becomes an extension of browsing the bookshelves – the former’s humorous and proudly artisanal qualities emerge in ways that they might not in a more formal “white box” gallery.

Still, as with painter Barbara Mink’s new curatorial series at the Bookery in the DeWitt Mall, Futures brings up the question of what counts as a “real” gallery in Ithaca.

Of course, local artists have long relied on coffee shops and other informal spaces to present their work. It’s a viable solution for presenting work to more diverse audiences (potentially perhaps, even to the vexed matter of selling art.) And it’s hard to begrudge people choosing art to hang on the basis of friendships and informal contacts. After all,

there is no Ithaca-area art space of any kind that consistently shows excellent taste in showing contemporary or local art.

And yet it’s important to make some distinction between informal operations like this one and the multi-faceted work done by Ithaca’s more official galleries. In markedly different ways, organizations like the State of the Art Gallery or the Ink Shop Printmaking Center downtown or Corners Gallery in Cayuga Heights—or the sadly defunct eye Gallery—do much more to recruit, organize, present, and promote artists. That such spaces seem unable to help so many accomplished and deserving local and regional artists is testament both to our range of talent and the difficulties of helping artists find their audience.

Ithaca Ballet revives classic Shakespeare

A Midsummer Night’s Dream he magic of midsummer is brought to life this spring on the State Theatre stage when the Ithaca Ballet presents “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” choreographed by Lavinia Reid and set to the music of Felix Mendelssohn. Performances are at 3 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 30.

“It’s funny, it’s beautiful, there’s some amazing dancing in this production,” says Cindy Reid, artistic director of the Ithaca Ballet.

Based on the Shakespeare play, the dancers tell three intersecting stories that happen overnight in the forest. Titania and Oberon, queen and king of the fairies, are bickering without resolution; humans Hermia and Lysander are planning an elopement, accompanied by their friends Demetrius, who once loved Hermia himself), and Helena, who is unhappily in love with Demetrius. Last, a group of hapless actors has for some reason come to the woods to rehearse a play they’re planning, and it’s clearly not going well. One of the actors, Bottom, even gets his head stuck in a donkey’s head mask. When Oberon turns the sprite Puck loose with a love potion and confusing instructions, havoc breaks loose when he drops some of it on the wrong people.

One of his hapless victims is Titania, Queen of the Fairies, danced by Samantha (Sprague) Iddings, an Ithaca Ballet alumna who went on to a professional career with the Tulsa Ballet before returning to Ithaca to teach ballet.

“Samantha is so outrageously good,” Cindy Reid said of Iddings, who’s also the mother of a toddler. “The whole company learns from watching her.”

“I have four different sections where I’m actually dancing and Titania’s in a different mood in each of them,” Iddings said. “In the beginning, I’m angry with Oberon. The next time I’m with my fairies and more confident and sassy. The next time I’m like a love-struck schoolgirl with Bottom. And at the end, I’ve got a pas de deux with Oberon.”

It’s quite a lot of dancing, but she points out, “I also sleep on the stage twice, so I get little breaks.”

Iddings adds, “It’s a really fun ballet and

the day to day rehearsals and has been impressed with the professionalism of her cast of dancers.

“It’s super funny,” Cindy says of the ballet. “What’s wonderful is we get all the pieces in there.” The cast includes Ayla Naghsh and Maria Valencia as Hermia and Helena, and guest artists Tucker Davis and Xavier Nunez dancing the roles of the men who love them. “They have so much experience, as they do the roles, they’re in the roles. It’s delightful to watch. You’re really seeing the dancing at a high level.”

Two shorter ballets round out the program: “Jupiter” (music by Gustav Holst, choreographed by Bonnie ValanteSpaight) and “Stratus” (music by Billy Cobham, choreographed by Lavinia Reid).

tells the story really well. Even if you’re not familiar with the play, you’ll be able to follow along.”

Kevin Olmstead, who dances Oberon, began dancing at 16 and moved on to a professional career with what he describes as a smorgasbord of companies and roles.

“It’s funny how Shakespeare’s comedies hold true even all these years later,” Olmstead says. “Oberon is stern but not that bad of a guy. I joke with Samantha that the falling-in-love-with-a-donkey thing has probably happened multiple times in the forest.”

He says dancing in a comical ballet is a departure from a career where he mostly danced as a prince in white tights.

“It’s fun to mold into a different character that’s not so upright and formal, and it’s also pretty physically demanding,” he says of this ballet. “The choreography is pretty intricate, but it’s nothing beyond the capabilities of the company. It requires a bit of strength and discipline to it.”

Comedy came to the rehearsal when Olmstead, a full-time father whose wife is finishing her Ph.D. at Cornell, and Iddings brought their daughters. While Cindy Reid held Olmstead’s infant, Idding’s daughter proved to be no fan of the proceedings.

When Olmsted as Oberon lifted and carried Titania offstage it was with Idding’s daughter clinging in confusion to her mother’s foot.

The sense of fun is evident in both Reid sisters’ description of the process of bringing the ballet to life.

“I’m just delighted to work with them,” Lavinia says of the cast.

She’s seen the ballet come to life both in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, where she began the Chambersburg Ballet Theatre School, as well as with her sister’s company in Ithaca. Lavinia Reid designed the sets with the help of a black-light artist, so the fairies and the sets can magically appear and disappear. Cindy, whom both sisters describe as Lavinia’s muse, oversees

But she’s even more intimately acquainted with “Stratus,” having danced in the original 1975 production. “It’s very technical and very jazzy, but on point,” she says.

“There’s a jazz fusion drummer. It’s got lots of energy.”

Cindy Reid is not dancing in this production. “I wish she’d be in it this time, but she’s retired for the moment,” Lavinia Reid says. “She’s doing a splendid job with one of the best regional companies in America.
