Founders Saddened with Closing

A

member of Ithaca’s culinary landscape closed its doors for the last time on April 26. Napoli Pizzeria, which has been in business since 1976, is closed after 43 years in business.

Napoli was on the site of the former gas station where the Gateway Commons sits now until Leo retired from the business in 2003. Upon the renovation of Gateway Center in 2004., Emilio moved his business into the very front.

Even with Domino’s being right next door, Napoli Pizza was able to remain in business.

The Sposito family is saddened by the closing of Napoli’s. Even though the family sold the business in 2006, there has always been a connection, said Donna Sutton, daughter of Leo and niece of Emilio.

“Napoli’s grew out of culture, community, and most importantly family,” Sutton said. “It captures how our family was built, how it grew, and how it thrived in Ithaca and beyond. In each slice of pizza made by my dad and uncle, each spoonful of sauce made by my mom, each table bussed by a cousin, a sibling, a friend turned family, there was love. And after 43 years, that’s all anyone can really ask for. Thank you to everyone who supported us, ate with us, laughed with us, watched a game, and said hello. None of this would have been possible without you.”

Sutton said after Leo retired from the business in 2004, Emilio sold the business around 2006. Her understanding, from the current owner, is that rent has increased and the restaurant became unsustainable. With a tradition of round pizza with fresh dough and sauce prepared daily and reputedly some of the best wings in Ithaca, it’s certainly a loss that will be felt by Ithacans.

Cayuga Health breaks ground on transformation and expansion project

A

pril 23 marked the groundbreaking ceremony for Schuyler Hospital, a member of Cayuga Health System, to kick off the construction of a new 15,000 square foot state-of-the-art Medical Surgical inpatient unit in Montour Falls. Phase one of the two-part development is to be completed by July 2020. The project is made possible by a $10.3 Million New York State Statewide Health Care Facility Program Grant that was awarded in July of 2017.

This new unit will include 12 large single rooms and four semi-private beds as well as improved monitoring. This will allow nurses to check each patient’s status from a central station and respond quickly to alerts signaling a change in a patient’s condition. With the new design, patients will be ensconced in a pleasant, healing environment with an open central space to allow unobstructed views to the private patient’s rooms. John Rudd, president and CEO of

Cayuga Health System, sees the new facility as a benefit for the community.

“The improvements will provide better health care in our community and will allow our hospital’s staff to give more effective and efficient care to each patient,” said Rudd.

“In addition, the growth and expansion at Schuyler Hospital benefit the entire Cayuga Health System, as we continually expand our health care role throughout the region.”

The project has been in the works since Cayuga Medical Center and Schuyler Hospital joined together to form Cayuga Health System. Rudd said that even at that point, there were talks of how to transform Schuyler Hospital into a more robust medical institution. “ We had actually received a $6 Million grant, early on, even before we had finalized the formation of Cayuga Health Systems that began the transformation,” Rudd said. “So, even as we were completing that project in 2014, we had

already started looking at grant opportunities and submitted a grant back in 2015 or 2016. We weren’t able to get that grant but the next year we did. So, we found out about this one 2017, that we had been awarded a $10 Million grant from New York State.”

Phase two of the development will include the entire renovation of the current Medical-Surgical unit into a 9,185 square foot Primary Care Center. The new care center will be telehealth enabled and will offer improved care coordination. Along with this, the new move will enhance patient care by placing the Primary Care Center to the front of the building, adjacent to the Specialty Clinic. Jim Watson, president and CEO of Schuyler Hospital, views this as a great means of improving interdisciplinary coordination for treatment.

“Having Primary Care in our main building will also be a great convenience to our patients,” Watson said. “When patients see their physicians and get an order for blood work or x-rays, they only have to walk a few steps to get the continued on page 7

Tompkins County sets its sights on future tech investments

n its 2019 Report to the Community, Tompkins County Area Development (TCAD) detailed considerable growth in the business sector, with plenty more improvements on the way. Heather McDaniel, president of TCAD, said in the past five years the county has managed to keep 4,700 jobs in the area while creating over 650 jobs in the process.

TCAD has also concentrated its efforts on developing more solar energy projects.

McDaniel reported that in the last two years, 12 projects have been approved that will generate 48 megawatts of solar power. This would be enough energy to power a quarter of the homes across Tompkins County. However, TCAD’s energy concerns are not just centered on residential energy use, but also for businesses use as well.

A new program launched in 2018 called Business Energy Advisors matches businesses with energy consultants who

then help them make their buildings more environmentally-friendly. For businesses with headquarters in another region of New York, the building would still be eligible for applying for the program.

Businesses can inquire through the county about how to apply and what type of services they will be offered.

Throughout the Finger Lakes, McDaniel said, tourists spent $3.1 billion over the last year. With many downtown Ithaca hotel projects in the works, such as the Canopy by Hilton, revitalization of the Hotel Ithaca, and the Marriott, TCAD is looking to bring some of those dollars into downtown Ithaca. The Tourism Grant Awards program has been a success with monies being awarded to Friends of Stewart Park, Ithaca Children’s Garden, Sciencenter and The State Theatre. The largest grant, of $80,000, was awarded to The History Center of Tompkins County, which is moving to their new location on Tioga Street and opening on May 10.

With regards to the Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport expansion, TCAD is proud to see the project continue on schedule. It assisted with the application that helped it gain $12.4 million in state funding.

McDaniel sees not just Ithaca, but Tompkins County as a whole, growing into a business hub in the coming years, and the airport should support the developing economic landscape.

One long-term concern

that TCAD has been addressing is the housing crisis across Tompkins County. In order to better understand what has been going on, TCAD participated in the Tompkins County Housing Market, Funding Resource & Solutions Analysis Committee. This committee, a joint venture between the Tompkins Chamber Foundation and The Community Foundation, will oversee a study into a course of action on how to generate affordable housing countywide.

Looking ahead to the next five years, McDaniel sees $500 million of capital investments being made to Tompkins County. Along with this, TCAD is looking to keep 3,450 jobs in the county and bring in 550 more. McDaniel also noted that in the coming months, TCAD will look to increase workforce development throughout the county by hiring a coordinator to work with businesses who are looking to recruit workers with training in certain fields. In the time before TCAD gives its next Report to the Community, the clear message from the annual meeting was that the agency will look to ensure Tompkins County takes steps towards becoming a hub for technological businesses and further action has been taken to tackle the housing crisis.

eveloping housing has been proven time and time again to be the most important issue to the people of Tompkins County.

Years of work has shown there’s no single solution, so county officials are looking at many options.

One of those options is creating infill and smaller developments to facilitate a more diverse housing market, as explained in a presentation on April 24 at the Tompkins County Public Library.

Development Alliance (Inc Dev), a national collective of developers who think small, to examine ways to go about this.

Bernice Radle, owner of Buffalove Development and Little Wheel Restoration Company, answered the call. In addition to being a member of Inc Dev, she is also the vice chair of the Buffalo Zoning Board.

Radle began her presentation by identifying that for now, thinking on a smaller scale should be a priority.

The event did have a too-good-to-be-true lineup, with Jay-Z, The Killers, Miley Cyrus, Carlos Santana and John Fogerty all slated to perform, but it looks like they opted for cancellation instead of a PR and logistical nightmare akin to Fyre Festival.

Cornell graduate students create a language for Captain Marvel

A

s the Marvel Cinematic Universe ends its long-standing Avengers franchise, Joseph Rhyne and Ryan Hearn, two Ph.D. linguistics students at Cornell, were presented with an unusual opportunity: working on one of the most recent films in the canon, “Captain Marvel,” to create the verbal portion of the alien language Torfan, spoken by the Torfan people in the film. Producers of the film initially approached Cornell Professor Michael Weiss for the task, but Weiss decided to let his students have a go at it.

Since there was already a written language for the Torfans in one of the comic books as well as throughout certain parts of the film, their task was to give that baseline language meaning.

Rhyne found that using the syntax and morphology of agglutinative languages, like Turkish and Japanese, would work to their advantage. The process for creating a language, Hearn said, involved research into the cultural identity of the Torfan people.

“You get enough information as you can about what

kind of being you are making this language for,” Hearn said.

“So, if it’s an alien race, how are they making this noise?

Do they have mouths? With Torfan, they did have mouths and they were very humanlike. From there, we move onto what’s the culture of these people, because you can’t divorce language from culture— the two always go together and reflect each other. Once we had kind of an idea of the Torfan people and how they were a technologically advanced, peaceful people, then we could start figuring out how we wanted our language to convey that to the audience.”

According to Hearn, the phenology, or the sounds of the language, of an agglutinative language played a role in their choice because it sounds different from what English speakers would be accustomed to.

There was one catch in getting this work done: they had to do it in four days. While most people would balk about such a short time span, Rhyne and Hearn used this to their advantage. Despite not much experience, Rhyne and Hearn

rose to the occasion using the time constraint to streamline their process.

“Every natural language has all these idiosyncrasies and complex use to it,” Rhyne said.

“But having that time constraint didn’t really allow us to explore those kinds of options.

In that sense, it was kind of a benefit to have the time constraint because we were more focused on the actual work that we needed to do and made it a little simpler because actors did have to say lines. It was a little easier for actors to learn in a quick time because they were filming that week.”

Armed with their backgrounds in literary theory, Rhyne and Hearn were able to delve into aspects of grammar required for any language to work. They were then able to find the verb forms they would need and pinpoint the parts of language they’d have to include.

Hearn and Rhyne felt being a part of Captain Marvel was surreal, as it was a chance to combine their personal passion for comic books with their professional passion for linguistics. With the release of Avengers Endgame on April 26 out and plenty of fans looking to get a glimpse at the climatic ending to 11 years of mov-

ies, Hearn and Rhyne can go on knowing they had a hand in a piece of that universe.

Both are great fans of fictional constructed languages like Dothrakian from “Game of Thrones” or Klingon from “Star Trek.” They both welcome the opportunity to do something like this again in the future, although they would like to pursue other avenues in the linguistics field.

“Even if our part in it is really small, compared to a lot of the people who would be spending months and months working on it, it’s really cool to see your name up in the credits alongside all those big names,” Hearn and Rhyne said. “We’ve been comics fans for most of our entire lives, so it’s absolutely a dream come true. The things that combine our personal passions of comic books and stuff like that without professional passions of linguistics was just a perfect experience.

Especially at a time when the universe, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is expanding beyond the realm of male heroes and white male heroes. For me, I’m proud to have been a part of something that expands the diversity of the universe.”

Nye is a pretty good get as a second-stringer, though if Cornell students fail to start a “Bill! Bill! Bill!” chant during his speech, this was all for naught.

It was the first day of the 2018-19 rowing season. Holding a clipboard and a thick file of 21 clipped dossiers was Ellen Cornstarch, assistant coach to the Big Red’s Women’s Rowing team. Her job that day was to get a first feel for the potential freshman talent for the coming year. From 21 candidates, she was going to narrow the field down to the seven most promising prospects, and before her were 20 young women, tall, lean and strong, clad in sweatpants and tank tops, standing at parade rest, alert and ready to row.

“I see you’ve all signed in, except one,” said Cornstarch, looking at her clipboard.

“Is Victoria Jade Gottbux here?”

“I’m here…technically,” said a voice behind the athletes. They parted to reveal a young woman wrapped in a thick fleece blanket, nursing a Starbucks beverage and reclining on a weight bench.

“I mean, I literally thought this was some kind of joke, or maybe some hazing thing or whatever.” She slowly sat up. “I mean who has rehearsals in the middle of the night?”

“Vicki, I’m glad you’re here,” said Cornstarch. “I’ve been looking at your application. And…wow. May I call you ‘Vicki,’ by the way?”

“Please don’t,” said Gottbux. “And what’s all that …stuff…downstairs?”

YOUR LETTERS Intercity bus stop issues caused by poor planning My company, OurBus, has been in the news lately, as part of the larger discussion of where intercity bus stops should be located in Ithaca. For many years, bus routes to and from Ithaca had been operated by a number of other companies from an off-street, privately owned terminal located on State Street.

In 2017, OurBus, which is a technology company that acts as a broker, connecting passengers with independent, highquality and family owned bus companies, entered the Ithaca market. We set up a 6 T

daily service to New York City, operated

by Martz Trailways. Unable to access the State Street Terminal, OurBus cooperated with the City of Ithaca to establish a boarding and discharge location on East Green Street.

This location was successful for all involved and convenient for riders.

Following the closure of the State Street terminal, the City of Ithaca chose to relocate Greyhound, New York Trailways, and Short Line intercity bus service. Starting on Oct. 1 of last year, these companies were moved to the same Green Street location that OurBus had established one year earlier. Instead of allowing the continued on page 7

city,” and also that it was one of the best small towns in which to live. As they descended Route 96 and saw the twinkly lights, it was love at first sight. Then they saw the Commons and Center Ithaca and it reminded them of many European cities they knew.

Diana and David moved to Ithaca in 1999. Each year they loved Ithaca more— the gorges, the neighbors, the yoga, trails, the colleges and universities, the music.

They said Ithaca has been a fascinating community in which to raise their children.

Diana engaged in the burgeoning Office of International Programs, supporting all the international students arriving in a new land, over time becoming the director. As David finished his Ph.D., he taught at SUNY Cortland and Ithaca College. In his spare time, as a creative outlet, David learned web design, making websites for his courses and for the yoga studio at which he and Diana practiced.

By 2005, Christopher Grant and Matthew Clark started software company GORGES, Inc. Christopher also attended the yoga studio and had advised David during the creation of the yoga website.

Soon, David was a full-time employee.

As David’s new career unfolded, he and Diana took stock of their good fortune: They were working in fields that engaged them, challenged them and rewarded them. They had time, energy and resources for their family and community life, too.

In 2014, David met Bob Kibbie, a History Center Trustee, and offered to create a digital history for the center. When Rod Howe became executive director, David

joined the History Center’s board of trustees.

David found himself at the intersection of history and technology—all that has gone before, and all the lies ahead. And as his thoughts expanded with excitement, he realized that his interests, his background and his skills could help preserve and expand what we have as a community and wish to share and preserve for future generations. As he dove in, he found so many notable things that have happened here, and learning local history enhanced his sense of place. His feelings about his chosen community, Ithaca, became even richer when he saw its evolution over time.

As the dream of moving into the old Tompkins Trust Company building edged toward possibility, David saw it was a huge opportunity and a huge challenge to organize the center’s historical materials into a searchable database and to help plan the physical structure of the exhibits that would be fabricated. Equally exciting would be the software production to expand the opportunities of visitors (local folks, academicians, researchers, students) to find history at their fingertips. David visualized creating and organizing the content for an interactive timeline for the new museum.

Several of the 25 displays being created for the History Center sit outside David’s light-filled Gorges design office in downtown Ithaca. Walking to work after the kids head to their schools and Diana is at work, David thinks how his day will include his work with the History Center.

He and Diana have managed to weave together their professional lives, their family lives, and their interests in local and international history. For them, life is good.

The new facility will add more examination rooms to the Primary Care Clinic to improve patient scheduling, allowing patients to see their physicians quicker.

The clinic will also have a room dedicated purely to behavioral health visits using enhanced technology to provide rapid laboratory tests. According to Watson, these tests can deliver diagnostic results for the flu and strep throat infection in less than 15 minutes. There will also be a high-speed digital link which will allow for telemedicine advances for patient care, including consultation with specialists at other locations.

There haven’t been many challenges keeping the project from coming to fruition, which Rudd attributes to the good relationship between Cayuga Medical Center and Schuyler Hospital. The only challenge was securing funding for the project. While they were hoping to be a part of the first round of transformation grants from New York State, they would have to wait until they would get

the proper funding for this monumental undertaking.

Knowing the expansion was coming soon, work began in November 2018 to create newly expanded parking lots to support the transforming project. The grant which is supporting the work done in phase one was the largest of six grants, totaling $40 million awarded to Southern Tier hospitals and health-care programs.

Schuyler Hospital has been looking to grow for some time now, with the growth of specialty health services being a sign of the needed change. In 2014, the hospital’s two specialist in orthopedics and general surgery had 1,500 patient visits. Toward the end of 2018, nine specialists were at the hospital to handle approximately 5,000 patient visits. The hospital has a range of specialty care including oncology, cardiology, neurosurgery, gynecology, sleep/pulmonology, orthopedics, general surgery, wound care, and ear, nose and throat care.

The entire project should be completed by the end of 2020.

carriers to select new locations on their own, the City of Ithaca chose to force all intercity buses to operate from a small space that had enough room for the buses arranged by OurBus, but not enough room for all. The resulting congestion was foreseeable, and entirely of the City of Ithaca’s own making.

Oct. 5, 2018, the start of Cornell’s fall break, was a busy travel day. All four intercity travel companies, including OurBus, made sure that extra buses were available to meet the needs of the traveling public. The way New York Trailways, Greyhound, and ShortLine dispatched their buses on a fixed schedule caused severe congestion on Green Street. When high demand is expected, they send two, three, or four buses to pick up passengers, all at the same time. The Green Street bus stop only has room for two buses at once. You can imagine the results. The congestion was compounded because none of these companies modified their timetables to prevent multiple scheduled departures at the same time.

OurBus also adds extra capacity on busy travel days. But in contrast to our competitors, each additional bus is scheduled to depart at a different time. One bus loads, departs, then another comes later. This is specifically designed to minimize congestion at the bus stop. We also regularly modify schedules to avoid a bus being at the stop when no space is available.

Somehow, despite having operating practices that create the least impact on the space, the mayor and council decided that the buses that OurBus brought to Green Street were the source of the congestion problem. Yet in reality, the bus service arranged by OurBus had been operating from that location for more than a year without incident.

The City of Ithaca’s failure to identify any other possible loading area for intercity buses led to this problem. There are many possible locations, such as stops lightly used by TCAT or commercial loading zones that could have been adapted for intercity buses. Or, to create more capacity, the city could have simply removed three parking meters.

Despite knowing for months that more space was needed, the city developed no workable short-term plan to accommodate intercity buses. There is also no longrange plan for a solution like a municipal intercity bus station, which many communities, like Binghamton and Syracuse, have received federal funds to construct.

This year, the City of Ithaca decided to deny OurBus a renewed permit. The City of Ithaca has declared that with ShortLine, New York Trailways, and Greyhound on Green Street, there is no room for OurBus. We have essentially been used as a scapegoat for problems that were caused by our business competitors. The City of Ithaca demanded that OurBus move May

off of Green Street, prohibited any other on-street locations, and told OurBus to pay for a private bus terminal somewhere else in town (which does not exist). This is completely unfair to OurBus, an innovative company offering quality and affordable travel options that were on Green Street before any of the others.

But more importantly, the City of Ithaca’s actions towards OurBus will not even solve the root problem. Unless the City of Ithaca comes up with a workable plan for intercity bus stops—or better yet, allows intercity bus companies to do so themselves—congestion on Green Street will continue. A well-planned solution to find new space for the companies that formerly used the State Street terminal is crucial, and it needs to happen quickly.

The congestion seen on Green Street will not be solved by harassing or driving out OurBus and depriving OurBus customers of transportation.

We fully intend to fight and retain our stop on Green Street in order to continue serving the people of Ithaca. Tickets will continue to be available for purchase on our website and these tickets will be valid for travel.

Tammy Baker’s homeless outreach strategy: Human Connection.

ammy Baker is one of the busiest people in Ithaca. She is not one for spending the entire day in her office; rather, she is scouring the streets for people in need of her unique services.

Baker has been the outreach coordinator for Family & Children’s Services of Ithaca since July 2015, during which the job has evolved in a variety of different ways. Yet it remains mainly focused on connecting disadvantaged populations, often impoverished, with services that could help them address their situations either short- or long-term.

“It’s a great tool to help people,” Downtown Ithaca Alliance Executive Director Gary Ferguson said. “Until this program was in place, when there was a problem on the streets or on the sidewalks of our city, there only solution was to call the police, call 911. The police would come and police are not trained social service workers.

They’re not trained in working with people with very special needs. It’s really unfair to put them in that position because they only really have one option, take someone into custody or they can let them go. This provides a really good alternative for folks.

We have businesses and individuals who would call Tammy and work with a person and it’s a great alternative to having to call the police for something that didn’t need that level of intervention.”

Baker said the number of people the program serves has increased tremendously since she began, indicative of the growing homeless population in the City of Ithaca that was seen over the last year, both with more people populating the Jungle and increased usage of homeless shelter and services over winter.

“It’s grown a lot in terms of the number of individuals I serve and the program serves,” Baker said. “I track not only the individuals, but I also track how many individuals or how many times I interact with individuals. If I saw you three times in one day, I would track it as one encounter. But if I got calls about you from different people, then I would track it as three different encounters.”

In 2016 she met with 129 individuals and had 1,389 different encounters total.

Comparatively, in 2018, the numbers

spiked as she met with 425 individuals and had 1,754 encounters. According to Gary Ferguson, executive director of the Downtown Ithaca Alliance (DIA), the program was born from several interests coming together between the city and DIA, following a visit to Burlington, Vermont. Ferguson said the program was implemented after several local agencies—the City of Ithaca, Tompkins County, DIA, Cayuga Medical Center and Ithaca Renting—each contributed money for one year to bring the program to fruition.

“We were involved early on in helping initiate the program,” Ferguson said. “We were very excited about what we saw and the outcomes that they were receiving and we thought it could help meet some of the needs that we have here. We did work with our other partners—the City, the county and, ultimately, Cayuga Medical Center— as well to put together a pool of money to help make the program work. We’ve been on the planning committee and the oversight committee that follows it along.”

The DIA’s hospitality and Clean Team ambassadors, who scour the city for trash pick-up and weekend clean-up opportunities, maintain a close relationship with Baker, which helps her stay on top of issues as they pop up along the way. The program, Baker said, has been based on getting people connected to the services they need. However, she found many people are connected with homeless services around Ithaca, which puts her in the position of ensuring that those people stay on track to get the help they need. Connecting with people on a human level was one of the things that attracted Baker to taking the position three years ago, and her sentiments ring similar to others in her field who are trying to make the system accommodate the people its supposed to help, instead of those people making changes to accommodate the system.

“I believe that people need to be met where they’re at and I believe in human connection,” Baker said. “For example,

panhandling. Panhandling is someone’s constitutional right. Some people [think] you should shoo them away but what they need is a connection, a human connection. So, what attracted me was the idea of connecting people and finding out what it is they need and getting them the services they want, not the services I think they need but what they would like.”

Evidently, though, finding housing for people has been an issue due to the lack of housing, especially affordable housing, in Ithaca. The majority of people who Baker interacts with normally do not generate enough income to comfortably afford the average housing in Ithaca, often forcing them to search the cheaper parts of Tompkins County. That presents its own problems, though, since it consequently takes them away from the locus of human services, many of which are in downtown Ithaca.

Another problem that Baker has faced is the lack of a detox center in the community. Once many of the people she works with are ready to get clean, they stick to it, according to Baker. She doesn’t want to see the people she works with go to rehab or detox and get clean, only to move back into living situations that could cause them to relapse. Her goals are to see people stay clean and keep moving forward.

Coincidentally, a recent announcement from the Alcohol and Drug Council of Tompkins County stated it will introduce a detox center in Lansing in the coming months, a 40-bed facility with 24/7 addiction treatment services. It will be the first official detox center in Tompkins County.

For now, Baker is doing the work on her own. Pending current funding talks with Tompkins County and the City of Ithaca, there could be some more money allocated to getting the program the help it needs, according to Ferguson.

“Obviously there has been a lot of action and a lot of attention being paid to shore up and stabilize the program to make sure it has the funding to do what it’s doing,” Ferguson said. “I think, yes, there is interest in trying to grow the program.

At the moment, there was talk about expanding it this year, but I think what will happen more than expanding it is we will stabilize it and make sure it is able to do what we want for right now. One of the things we found when we did a review of it over the last couple of months was that the workload was way, way in excess of what a single person could be able to do, and so May

we needed to make sure that was resolved, that it made sense.”

Baker said that the number of people she sees in one day ranges anywhere from 6 to 15. In addition to this, she also works with the court system, going there on Wednesdays and Fridays, to ensure that people are at their court appointments. Many civic leaders have sung her praises, as she has been a leader in helping homeless citizens get their lives on track.

Ferguson is one of them. He has found the work she does for the community to be a helpful measure that gets people the help they need.

As with most programs, Ferguson knows it’s not going to solve all the problems associated with homelessness, but it does ensure that there are alternative ways of dealing with those populations. For now, though, Baker is continuing to put the interests of the people she works with ahead of her own, allowing them to figure out what they need.

One of the many ways that Baker has seen the position change is through the budding number of calls from places outside of downtown Ithaca. It signifies the impact the program has been able to create. Baker said that calls come in from people asking about how their neighbors or co-workers can get the help they need.

But more than just getting one person from off the street to somewhere with a roof, Baker said she has wanted to redefine the term “success story” as something that applies to homeless people for the nearand far future.

“When people see a success story, they think, ‘Oh, great, you’re housed and you’re all set,’ but it’s more than that,” Baker said.

“When somebody gets housed, they are often in an unfurnished room, so it’s pretty depressing. If you’re homeless and you don’t have any money, you don’t have the means to supply or furnish your apartment. So, helping people figure out how to find furniture for their homes [is important]. I’ve been going out to The Jungle, the homeless encampment, I got a team together to go out there. One of the things that we did is meet everyone out there, find out what their needs are, and find out what they need to do with the Department of Social Services, get them on the homeless list—so, making those connections with people. The street outreach, which is beautiful—I don’t know who I’m going to run into during the day.”

imeon Darwick, who works as a massage therapist and fitness coach at the Padma Center for Natural Therapies in downtown Ithaca, is one of several teachers offering laughing yoga classes in Tompkins County, such as over the winter at the Groton Public Library. He founded and now operates his own business, Joyful Fitness, which focuses on teaching wellness strategies that span from laughter yoga to herbal usage and others.

Laughter yoga can take some different forms, but centers on the single theme of incorporating voluntary laughter into normal yoga exercises, with the hopes of increasing breathing and oxygenation.

This is normally done in groups and with a generally convivial atmosphere, as one might expect given the nature of laughter.

It might betray some of the conventional stereotypes about yoga and mindfulness, but Darwick said there are plenty of benefits to be gained through laughter yoga.

“Laughter is really mindlessness, but heartfulness,” Darwick said. “It’s particular breathing exercises that take people out of their stress and back into their natural state as a human being, which is joyful and playful.”

Classes have popped up at plenty of places around Tompkins County over the last 10 to 15 years, since the technique gained popularity following its invention in the mid-1990s. The ethos of the practice is to return people closer to what laughing yoga teachers believe is the true, low-stress baseline of human beings. Darwick came to be a teacher through participating

in laughter yoga himself. He learned it during a trip to India over a decade ago, shortly after his college graduation and the death of his father. Laughter yoga helped him navigate that particularly vulnerable transition period, teaching him ways to positively channel his emotions.

“My temperament is playful, I like having fun as a way of enlightening,” Darwick said. “It provided me a way of managing my emotions and my stress so that I could be responsive and proactive in my life.”

A constantly connected and technology-ridden world has seemingly contributed to a spike in stress in daily life. In Darwick’s mind, the increased stress is one of the primary threats to the day-today health of everyone, and battling it with laughter and calmness is essential to preserving healthy functioning.

Of course, with something as contagious as laughter, the benefits aren’t only felt by the students. Darwick said teaching the course helps him maintain his skills and is, generally speaking, pretty fun just by its nature. He understands that the entire premise may sound too trivial for some, but there is no doubting his belief in the capacity of laughter yoga to change one’s health and outlook.

“You can take your life seriously, but ultimately allowing ourselves to fall back into a state of playfulness and ease can create a sense of well-being,” Darwick said. “Most people want to be happy and healthy, so here’s an easy way to do that.”

hen the Ithaca College softball team left the Empire 8 to join the Liberty League (beginning play in 2018), some wondered if such a move would change the fact that the Bombers often put up a good showing in conference play, then go on to make a strong run deeper into the postseason. By wrapping up the Liberty League schedule with an 11-1 season, the Bombers have, for the second year in a row, accomplished

their primary goal of hosting the conference tournament, which will start this Thursday at Kostrinsky Field on South Hill.

In 2018, head coach Deb Pallozzi served notice that her 30th season would be one of the program’s most memorable when she led the Bombers to the Liberty League Championship, then on to the NCAA Division III Championships (in Oklahoma City) for the 12th time in

program history.

The Hall of Fame coach has guided the team to a national championship and has mentored 19 All-Americans, and is one of only a handful of softball coaches to surpass the 800-win mark.

I asked Pallozzi how important it is to the team to win the conference tournament, and she said, “It’s always good to win the title and get that automatic bid to the NCAAs. Leaving it up to someone else (via the at-large bid process) never makes for a good night’s sleep—and I know; I have been on both sides of it.”

Switching conferences has turned out to be a good move for IC, and in Coach Pallozzi’s words, “The Liberty League is actually a more competitive league now.

There are a lot of good, young players coming up, and while the better competition is great for preparing us for the NCAAs, I will say that the travel is a little more challenging.”

When asked to give an overview of how the 2019 season has unfolded, Deb said, “I really like how strong the defense has been all year, and I love the fact that this team never gives up. When that’s the case, the game is never over until the last out.”

The top-seeded Bombers will take

on the No. 4 seed Clarkson, while No. 2 Rochester and No. 3 RPI will square off in the other prelim. The elimination games will be played Friday, and the title game will take place on Saturday. More info is available at www.athletics.ithaca.edu.

ircling back on a few recent columns, I’d like to start out by offering an update on some changes that came my way regarding the schedule for the Ithaca Unified basketball team I wrote about last week.

The team will play (this Thursday) May 2, at home versus Lansing, then will travel to Elmira on May 7. Another home game will take place on May 9 (Johnson City), and on May 14, they travel to Dryden.

May 16 will see another road trip (this time to Owego), and on May 20, a home game against Maine-Endwell will celebrate Senior Night. Ithaca Unified will close out the season on May 21 with another home game, this one against Union-Endicott. All home games will be played at 4:30 p.m. at Bliss Gymnasium.

Next, an update on my friend and local media legend Kevin English’s debut in the world of obstacle course racing. Kevin, as you may recall, decided at age 61 to have weight-loss surgery and kick his exercise routine into a much higher gear and reinvent himself. He lost 100 pounds over the course of several months, he made a commitment to compete in the Mud, Sweat & Cheers Bordoni 5K Extreme event, and when I woke up on Saturday morning and saw how wet and cold and potentially miserable the weather was, well, the level of respect I have for those stepping up to take part in the fine cause went from high to even higher. I reached out to Kevin after the race, and he told me, “Well, I did it! I am stinky, sweaty, tired and cold. Damn right, I earned it! Now, it’s time to rest, and soak.”

I love a good tale of reinvention and redemption. Well done, mi amigo.

for financing a development can often be archaic.

In her time refurbishing homes and apartment buildings, Radle found several chronic challenges for developments before they are even constructed. Two of the biggest reasons can be neighborhood opposition, which can frighten developers, and over-specialization of buildings, which can lead to slow and phased developments.

This has been a problem brought up by residents at several public meetings who have noticed that many new projects are being developed with first floor retail and commercial space to the point of the space seeming like a prerequisite.

high-rise buildings, can dominate the urban landscape. Instead, Radle said it is time to focus on single lots within neighborhoods. She went on to look at the potential reasons that infill development isn’t as prominent in certain areas.

Some of the reasons listed were about how land is held by fewer people and is instead put in the hands of a developer that may not want a smaller-scale building.

She also said the culture of “throwaway buildings,” which have one set purpose and aren’t adaptable for different uses over time, has become an all too common reality. Other points were about how the rules

she termed “the Goldilocks issue,” since some buildings are “not quite right.”

As housing demographics shift toward smaller homes, the result of neglecting some of these issues can create a strain on the real estate market.

In discussing the type of housing stock that should be made available for renters, she compared it to the idea of a little black dress. Like the little black dress, housing options should be versatile and have a sense of style about them. Radle was given a tour around Tompkins County and found there is a large chunk of mid-size development absent from the area. Instead, the range jumps from single-family homes to mid and high-rise developments.

triples, and fourplex buildings are just the tip of the iceberg. From there, developers should be focusing on courtyard style apartments, multiplex, and townhouses, she said. It seemed that many of those in attendance found Radle’s points regarding a lack of diverse housing stock resonated with them.

Radle addressed the question of how to modify the zoning code to create more meaningful developments in the community. She spoke about how over the last several years, the Buffalo zoning code went through a significant overhaul. Radle remarked that in order to encourage more people to develop in the area, the zoning code should be simplified for people trying to work smarter.

Following her presentation came a question and answer session which began with one of the most important issues facing Ithacans: parking, and specifically about how it can grow along with development. Radle spoke about Buffalo’s biggest change that came with enforcing its new green code, which was to eliminate the minimum parking requirement for development. Instead, the new code allows the market to decide where the parking will be.

Radle used a mixed-use building she redeveloped with 11 units in Buffalo as an example. With the minimum parking requirements in place, she would have had to tear down two buildings behind hers in order to accommodate the required minimum of 15 parking spaces. Under the green code, though, people who used public transportation or didn’t own a car moved into the building. As for the restaurant on the first floor, people who had to drive were able to park on the street.

She found that in order for development to grow in the city, the infrastructure must be adaptable to have multiple uses. Radle responded to a question from Alderperson George McGonigal about getting development along the West End and waterfront that aren’t high rise developments but also won’t use large parcel sizes as well. Radle simply responded by saying the project should be coupled with investors who are willing to invest in midsize projects.

Radle will be back on June 24 to hold a half-day seminar about infill and small development. She will hold a half-day training session with local planners and planning boards on Sept. 23. On Oct.21, she will hold a zoning and regulatory process review with county staff and officials.

New York Baroque presents a grand finale

o close their 30th anniversary season, NYS Baroque welcomes spring with a popular pastoral opera called “Acis & Galatea” by George Frideric Handel. This semistaged production, featuring five singers and a nine-piece orchestra conducted from the harpsichord by Leon Schelhase, takes place on Saturday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Ithaca’s First Presbyterian Church (different than their normal venue of the First Unitarian Society).

The opera, originally written for performance by small forces, is not usually done in this earlier version, but as musical director Deborah Fox said, “It is chamber music, what we do best as NYS Baroque.” Stage direction is by Emily Cuk, who was assistant director in the ensemble’s production of “Dido and Aeneas” last summer.

First called a serenata and then a masque (the composer called it a “small opera”), “Acis & Galatea” was written in 1718 when Handel was composer-in-residence at Cannons, the estate of the Duke of Chandos close to London, a place where the duke had assembled leading intellectuals of the time. Handel was

smart, Italian opera had run its course in London, so here was a safe place to do smaller courtly entertainments. The libretto based on Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” was written mainly

by John Gay, long before “The Beggar’s Opera” made him famous. Later versions and revivals, including several by Handel and an adaptation

by Mozart, have been regularly performed throughout subsequent centuries.

The story is of the shepherd Acis, who is in love with the nymph Galatea. She in turn attracts the attention of a monstrous cyclops Polyphemus who, when rejected by her, turns his jealous anger against Acis, whom he kills.

The mourning Galatea, using her divine powers, turns her lover’s body into a fountain, so she can always be near him.

A core group of outstanding singers are assembled for this production: well-known soprano Laura Heimes and tenor Jonas Budris play the star-crossed lovers. They are joined by tenors Andrew Fuchs and newcomer Nickolas Karageorgiou as shepherd friends, while bass Andrew Padgett plays a central role as Polyphemus. The five also make up the chorus.

Accompanying them is an unusual collection of instruments, no viola and three wind players. The bassoon plays mostly with the continuo made up of the lutes plus harpsichord. Everyone has multiple roles, showing, as oboist Geoffrey Burgess said, a genius of economy and creative instrumental coloring.

The oboes have to move among varying styles, he adds—martial, tender, characterizing solos.

The mourning Galatea, for example, hears the oboe as the ghost of Acis. They also play recorders that evoke the dove’s murmurs and represent bubbling water. In these instrumental roles are Burgess and New York Citybased Caroline Giassi. We also have familiar returning players, including violinists Julie Andrijeski and Boel Gidholm, cellist David

Morris, plus archlute and theorbo players Dan Swenberg and, naturally, Fox. This “small opera” carries a big wallop, with rich orchestral color and beautiful melodies that evoke a variety of emotions and moods. It was immediately popular especially because the text was immediately understood by English audiences. Burgess points out too that the choral writing is outstanding, that Handel was composing in the established English style, best represented

by Purcell. As he said, “it was the flavor of the time.” One outstanding example is the “beautifully written” chorus that opens the second act, “Wretched lovers!” Already a melancholy tone is set, and the giant steps of Polyphemus are painted in the music.

When asked about notable places in the opera, both Fox and Burgess speak of the military piece, “Love sounds the alarm,” sung by Acis, who is mustering his strength to fight the cyclops, accompanied by the two oboes sounding like trumpets. Both point to the humor in presenting this monster, who sings “I rage, I melt, I burn” and calls for many reeds for his instrument which, in the following “Ruddier than the cherry,” turns out to be a sopranino recorder, the highest, “tweetiest” instrument possible. As Burgess said, “it’s always fun when Polyphemus comes on the stage, you’re ready for the drama.” Fox loves Galatea’s aria in the end when Acis is turned into a fountain, “you hear it in the music.” Actually, one doesn’t need much staging for this opera; the music describes the action. We can hear a hurling rock, shepherds dancing, songs of birds, footsteps of the giant, the murmuring of the fountain.

Although she has never performed it in its entirety, Fox picked this opera herself. It’s “wonderful to learn a new piece of music,” she said. NYS Baroque has been planning for about a year, selecting which singer is good for which part. The ensemble has a core group of musicians who know one another very well and like to collaborate.

“It just feels comfortable,” Fox said.

And there are always few changes along the way. Michael Beattie, who was scheduled to conduct, had to withdraw just recently because of an injury.

“It was Michael’s and my first choice to ask Leon to take over,” Fox said. “It will be different. He will have his own musical ideas. But he, too, is a frequent collaborator.”

She concludes with the idea of such an incredible array of emotions, affect, and modes, so much word and scene painting: “This is a great piece of music. The audience will love it.”

Spring Writing

Much of the nuts-and-bolts of arranging the festival falls to Robin Schwartz, long-time program director at CAP. Schwartz spoke from the council’s new offices on the third floor of the Tompkins Center for History and Culture. She was enthusiastic about the range and quality of this year’s programming. “This is an extraordinary festival, mostly because of the extraordinary talent we have in this area,” she said.

Each year, Schwartz works with an artistic director, chosen from the local literary community. Past directors have (in succession) included luminaries Leslie Daniels, Bob Proehl and Jennifer Savran Kelly.

A

decade’s anniversary is a respectable milestone for any local festival. And while many Ithaca-area fests celebrate food, crafts and popular music, few give much attention to the more esoteric arts.

Conceived as a celebration of Ithaca’s diverse wordmongers, Spring Writes fits the bill perfectly. The festival is the brainchild of former Community Arts Partnership director (and current Cinemapolis head) Brett Bossard. Organized by the local arts council, it has grown considerably since its first iteration in 2009, which featured 16 events. This year’s program includes an impressive 43 events with 125 regional writers.

Spring Writes will take place from Thursday, May 2 to Sunday, May 5, with most of the events happening over the final two days. The eight participating

and communications consultant, Henion has a long-time connection with the area, having grown up in Trumansburg, as well as the festival itself.

Henion stressed the value of bridging diverse audiences in a college town with a healthy independent culture. ”I’ve always been very interested in connecting university culture with community culture because I just think incredible things happen when we put people from different backgrounds together,” she explained.

Schwartz and Henion discussed how Spring Writes differs from other, more specialist-oriented literary gatherings.

“This is open to the general public,” Schwartz said. “I think that this is unique in size and variety. I’m very proud of it.”

While the two women have tried to make everything accessible, they have also maintained a dual focus. According to Schwartz: “We wanted something that was of interest to the established writers and the general public.”

Some events target children or teenagers, while “fun things in the evening,” such as Friday’s “Moetry: Music and Poetry” and Saturday’s “Seven Minutes in Heaven: a spin-the-bottle of the arts” (both at Lot 10), promise a more grown-up atmosphere.

One of Bossard’s original goals for the Spring Writes was to bridge highbrow and popular writing. This year’s rendition continues to honor his intention. A Saturday screening of “Worlds of Ursula Le Guin,” a documentary on the late science fiction/

fantasy master. will be followed by a panel discussion with Ithaca College professor Katharine Kittredge and local author Bob Proehl. On Sunday, a workshop featuring novelists Jeanne Mackin, Nancy Holzner, and Nancy Ohlin will illuminate “The Art of Popular Fiction.”

One of the most distinctive features of Spring Writes is a cross-pollination with Ithaca’s other lively arts scenes. The performing arts—particularly music, theatre and oral literature— are a key part of the festival.

And while dance might seen like a quintessentially non-verbal artform, Saturday’s events include something called “Word World Whirl: Movement and Word Soundscape.” A collaboration between dancer-choreographers Rik Daniels and Jeanne Goddard and multi-disciplinary artist Jim Self, the performance will incorporate sound, language and gesture.

Words intersect just as deeply with the visual arts. The second day of the fête coincides with Gallery Night, the CAPsponsored monthly Friday evening of downtown opening receptions. Recently opened on the first floor of the Tompkins Center, CAP’s expanded ArtSpace gallery will feature, for its May exhibition, “Art and the Written Word,” with 21 artists showing pieces integrating writing or narrative.

The handmade book has emerged in recent decades as a newly revived and recognized artistic form. Lead by Lara Scott and Kate Blackwood of The Metamer Quarterly, a Sunday “Book + Art” workshop will make the art accessible to beginners, encouraging them to write and to build.

Schwartz stressed the accessible and unpretentious nature of the festival.

“Just come, just show up, have a seat,” she promised.

While most of Spring Writes is free and open to anybody, a few events require payment or advance registration. A modest $5 contribution will net visitors a button, which is good for discounts at several downtown businesses.

Collegians Old and New The Original Cornell Syncopators revive the college jazz legacy

inety-two years ago in Ithaca, Cornell University hosted the annual Maytime celebration that’s now called Slope Day. In 1927, they called it Spring Day. The Crusades were the theme that year, and entertainment was provided by one of the nation’s leading popular dance bands: the Jean Goldkette Orchestra, featuring trumpeter Bix Beiderbecke, a legendary figure in jazz history.

Also in this hot band was local boy Newell “Spiegle” Willcox, hailing from Cortland.

Willcox had previously played trombone in the group that opened for Goldkette that day, the Cornell Collegians, under the direction of drummer Bob Causer. Causer doubled as manager of the Ithaca Hotel at State and Aurora streets, which his father owned.

This story marks just one of many musical legacies to which The Original Cornell Syncopators will pay tribute in their spring concert on Friday, May 3, starting at 8 p.m. in Barnes Hall, when the 13-piece ensemble will present their fascinating project on collegiate bands from the early years of jazz.

The group has just finished recording an album of this collegiate repertoire for Rivermont Records at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Ithaca. The Syncopators have released two previous records on Electric Buffalo Records, a local studentrun label.

The Syncopators are a student band that began as a quintet in 2016. Their new material consists of selections adapted or transcribed from records made in the 1920s and 1930s by college bands and associated artists. Some of these ditties will strike 21st century ears as quaint relics, but others are tight big-band arrangements of familiar tunes. At the Barnes Hall concert, trombonist Rishi Verma will play the trombone lead on “I Cried For You,” as Spiegle Willcox memorably did on the Collegians’ recording in 1923.

Bandleader Colin Hancock’s obsession with jazz history and early recording techniques were the catalyst for the formation of The Syncopators. While in high school near Austin, Texas, he led a similar kind of musical project, a performance-slashresearch hybrid investigating the sound of Buddy Bolden, reputedly the first man ever to play in the style that evolved into jazz. (The Hollywood movie “Bolden” opens nationally on May 3, the same night as the concert.)

As Hancock and his colleagues discovered, almost all the Ivy League schools had student-run jazz bands back in the day. But unfortunately, college administrators at most HBCUs before World War II

treated jazz as they had previously treated the music’s syncopated predecessor, ragtime—that is, with disdain and official disapproval. Howard University banned the playing of jazz on campus at one point, according to Hancock. But student groups formed nonetheless in and around schools such as Fisk University in Nashville and Wilberforce College in Ohio. The Cornell Syncopators’ arrangement of “Memphis Rag” is based on the 1927 recording by the Chickasaw Syncopators, an outfit originated at a Memphis high school by Jimmie Lunceford, who was teaching there at the time. Lunceford eventually grew the group into one of the country’s finest big bands.

The college-based orchestras played a significant role in spreading popular awareness of the new jazz style throughout the population. This was especially true before 1925, when the technologies of gramophone records and wireless radio were still had limited reach.

“We’re dealing with a pre-mass media world when it comes to music,” says Bryan Wright, the founder of Rivermont Records and producer of the upcoming Syncopators album. “There were still a lot of regional styles that were very distinguishable, and even given the same tune, you’re going to hear different musical styles coming out of these different parts of the country.”

The album includes tracks based on student groups from Indiana (Hitch’s Happy Harmonists, with pianist Hoagy Carmichael), North Carolina, Kentucky, and Texas—regions sometimes assumed to have played little or no role in the development of jazz. This geographic diversity reflects the sophistication with which Hancock and the band approached their scholarship.

“The man has done considerable original research,” according to Wright. “Real boots-on-the-ground research, looking through newspaper archives and getting in touch with collectors who have scraps of ephemera, pamphlets and booklets and letters and things from these musicians in the ‘20s and ‘30s, and really piecing together a complete story, or a more complete story than we’ve ever had of these bands.”

“This is an important narrative in the story of jazz,” Hancock said. “You see mention of, ‘Oh, those college bands were great, you know, the collegiate scene, the collegiate drive,’ all that kind of stuff, but there’s not one serious project that has looked at them and said, ‘Why were they so important?’ And this is the one.”

Cornell’s “Spill,” by Leigh Fondakowski (lead writer of “The Laramie Project”), is an intense docudrama recounting the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill and its aftermath. Based on recorded testimonies, the play commemorates the lives of the 11 men who lost their lives when the well exploded.

One of 14,000 offshore drilling sites in the Gulf of Mexico, Deepwater Horizon— known by its 126-person crew as “The Well from Hell”—was dangerous not only for its record size and output but particularly for the procedural shortcuts BP’s management insisted on taking to speed up the production schedule.

This dynamic reenactment of a relentlessly compelling script is excellently directed by Caitlin Kane, a doctoral candidate who studies interview-based theatre.

She’s evoked persuasive performances from an ensemble of undergraduates (plus one Cornell lab technician) who are drawn

dedicated, experienced crew and the men’s wives and parents who lived with the daily awareness of risk. It also introduces BP’s profit-seeking management, unprepared for such a debacle, spending wildly to preserve the company’s image, and their slow response—from the explosion on April 20, it took 87 days to cap the well in an untested maneuver.

In the voices of coastal fishermen and bayou dwellers, we see the devastation of the ecosystem, the wildlife, their economic livelihood. From the survivors and cleanup workers, we learn of exposure to toxins and the nondisclosure agreements those rescued had to sign before being brought ashore.

The 20-story rig was built to hover in the water above its three-mile-deep well, but its entire mass collapsed into the ocean. The firestorm, fueled by methane gas, rose 800 feet into the air; the 11 men were incinerated; five million barrels of oil eventually spewed into the gulf.

Facts alone can’t convey the terror of the event, but Kane’s staging and phenomenal design team effectively take us into the maelstrom: Kent Goetz (set), Joey Moro (lighting), Warren Cross (sound), Sarah K. Bernstein (costumes), and Elizabeth Mak (projection). Floor and walls are blue ocean marred by blood-red spills;

caution yellow pipe fencing can’t assure safety; even the rig’s deck and towers spin out of control in a cacophony of sound.

The immediacy is overwhelming. (“Spill” continues May 3-4. at Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts) An impressive set design also distinguished IC’s production last weekend, directed by Wendy Dann, of José Rivera’s

“Marisol”—created

by Rodrigo Hernandez Martinez, with dramatic lighting by Shane Hennessy, volatile sound by Ron Ziomek, and projections by Raven Bartlett. A twostory construction houses Brooklyn and Bronx apartments, an office, and the subway; this New York eventually becomes a war zone, buildings razed and streets littered with debris.

Like “Spill,” Rivera’s play, written in the late ‘80s, describes a cataclysmic disaster. But whereas “Spill” shows that attempting to tame the wildest forces of nature is pure hubris, “Marisol” suggests that we’re so lost only total destruction can purge and renew us. In this apocalyptic fantasia, guardian angels abandon their charges in order to battle against a senile God who’s clearly messed up his creation.

With the rebel angels in control, “Marisol” turns Milton’s “Paradise Lost” into a

Black Mass; the only Angels in America have now pushed a collapsing civilization to a maddening extreme. The moon is gone; food has turned to salt; gas masks are required to endure the smoke and DDT; marauding Nazi skinheads torch the homeless.

Yet the middle-class victims of this tragedy seek to join the angels’ fight?

Rivera’s social message is muddled, and the Armageddon metaphor ignores the real systemic human causes of civil failure.

Noise and chaos and insanity prevail.

As two friends, Marisol and June, Juliana Andrea Betancur and Katherine Nevils often deliver their lines identically, without modulation. More convincing is Erin Lockett as the Angel (splendidly winged by costumer Nico Gonzalez). As June’s disturbed brother Lenny, Josh Wilde does a 180 post-calamity; he’s emotionally believable as a pregnant male. Jahmar Ortiz’s badly burned man in a wheelchair, looking for his lost skin, is quietly gripping.

The play opens with a strangely ghoulish indigent threatening Marisol on the subway. When, cringing, she tells him “get a job,” I first distrusted the script (as if any New Yorker would say that, even in Reagan’s America). The curious politics, endless ranting and five possible ending scenes prolonged my confusion. “Marisol” is one long raging jeremiad. Its issues are still relevant —but painful to experience.

ulgarian director Andrey Paounov follows internationally renowned environmental artist Christo on his quest to realize the mammoth and logistically complex installation, The Floating Piers, on Italy’s Lake Iseo, seven years after the death of Christo’s collaborator wife, Jeanne-Claude. An illuminating portrait of a master artist and the arduous business of bringing an ambitious work to life.

“The Floating Piers was originally conceived in 1970 by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, but it wasn’t until 2016, seven years after Jeanne-Claude’s death, that this stunning, site-specific masterpiece—which allows visitors to walk across a great stretch of water, buoyed by polyethylene cubes draped in luminous yellow fabric—was finally cleared to be mounted on Italy’s

Lake Iseo, which lies at the foot of the Alps.

But securing a location proved to be only the first step in a tumultuous process of creative problem solving and prickly negotiations. Not one to suffer fools, Christo is a larger-than-life personality. Now in his eighties, he has lost none of his feistiness or self-possession. His director of operations (and nephew) Vladimir Yavachev is likewise a lion, helping Christo contend with bad weather, overcrowding, and maddening bureaucracy.
