ne year after presenting “the most boring budget of his administration,” Mayor Svante Myrick had some exciting news to share about this year’s budget: the rash of development over the past 12 months has reaped dividends.

On Monday night, Myrick presented his proposed budget for 2017 with attractive stat lines including a 6.6 percent decrease in the tax rate—equating to the lowest rate since 2003—and an overall reduction in city taxes of 0.2 percent, all while staying under the 2 percent tax cap and allowing for increased spending in areas including street paving and the fire department, which will see a staffing increase of five people.

With a tax levy of 1.98 percent—thanks to a $15 million rise in assessed value across the city—one and two family households, the smallest share of the local market, will see most of the benefit: Half of all those residents will see their taxes drop, according to the mayor’s presentation to council.

This means the average homeowner, assuming their assessment didn’t go up a “huge” amount, according to the mayor, will see a reduction in their tax bill of about $2.85, even with the overall rise in property values across the city.

The mayor accredited this accomplishment not only to a 10 percent increase in land value last year, but the aggressive pursuit of both state and federal funding. And, because of the nature of most budgetary processes—which will play out for approximately three weeks beginning Oct. 13—the tax rate proposed is unlikely to change.

For city residents, this helps to make up for a school tax bill which, despite including a lowered tax rate—a 0.35 percent reduction—from the last fiscal year, was still negligible enough to mean an increase in taxes for anyone whose home was reassessed at a higher value, true for close to one-third of 35,000 properties countywide.

At the county level, a significant drop in sales tax revenue has aided in the need for a 3 percent increase in the tax levy and, because of a $5,000 increase in the value of an average home, the average resident will see an increase on their tax bill of about $16 for a median-value home.

Cornell Opposes UNA Designation

he Tompkins County Environmental Management Council (EMC) has been taking another look at land that it has classified as Unique Natural Areas (UNA).The Council is now seeking to modify the boundary of Sapsucker Woods at Cornell University.

The land, located next to the Cornell Business and Technology Park, is in the village of Lansing and is currently zoned for business and technology. Cornell expects that it will at some point be developed and is concerned about what a UNA designation could mean for its future plans for the land.

The EMC has been making revisions to the UNA boundaries around the Sapsucker Woods area since 2000, and the most recent resolution being considered would increase the UNA by about 27 percent, from 210 to 257 acres. Most but not all of that land is a parcel owned by the Cornell Business and Technology Park.

At a meeting in July, Kristin Gutenberger, a member of Cornell’s Real Estate Office management team, asked the EMC for more time to review the EMC’s latest new boundary proposal before it votes on whether to classify the additional land as a UNA. About 20 percent of the land in Ithaca is currently included in the Unique Natural Areas Inventory, which the Tompkins County website describes as an extensive database of maps and documents that summarizes nearly 200 sites in Tompkins County determined to contain significant ecological, biological, geological, or aesthetic characteristics.

The EMC uses a mix of people with different professional backgrounds, including botanists and mapping specialists, who use aerial images and site visits (if the landowner consents) to determine whether the land qualifies as a UNA. To qualify the land must have at least one of the following: important natural plant or animal community, rare or scare plants or animals, geological importance, cultural significance, or it could be considered the “best representative of particular resource in the county.”

“The really important piece is that UNA’s are not a regulatory designation,” said Scott Doyle, senior planner with the Tompkins County Planning Department. “They don’t provide any legal protection. It’s really information only for municipalities.” Doyle said the designation is meant to provide information that municipalities and landowners can use to determine the best use for their land.

is actually closer to the Cornell Business & Technology Park than the area that most would consider Sapsucker Woods.

The parcel in question is heavily wooded with a Town of Ithaca utilities line running along its southern boundary, which divides Ithaca and Lansing. To the south of the utilities access road is residentiallyzoned Ithaca town land, and to the north lies the Cornell-owned land in the village of Lansing.

According to the most recent resolution being considered by the EMC,

“Tonight’s incident is particularly troubling as it comes a little more than four weeks after Ithaca College student Anthony Nazaire was murdered in a stabbing on Campus Road, an incident that is still actively being investigated,” Rawlings wrote. “One act of violence near our campus is one too many.”

Cornell University Police Chief Kathy Zoner said in a newsletter that the university is pooling resources to create “high visibility police patrols” on campus for the “foreseeable future.”

SUNY Won’t Judge Your Past Anymore

W

hen she was 24 years old, Katelyn Morton was arrested in 2011 for driving the getaway car in a robbery of a Subway restaurant in Union, New York. The nonviolent felony landed her in county jail and later in state prison. Now 30, Morton says she isn’t the same person she was then and today wants to become a journalist.

“I want to learn as much as I can,” she said, “then inform the public about important things that need to be said and haven’t been said.”

Following her most recent release from a 16-month stint for a parole violation, Morton applied to Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3). It was then she faced what advocates for exoffenders call “the box.” It read: “Check here if you have been convicted of a felony.” After checking the box, applicants are asked to submit additional documents, which vary from campus to campus but can include rap sheets, letters of recommendation and even psychological evaluations.

“People with felonies have to jump through a couple more hoops [than other people],” Morton said.

Soon, applicants like Morton won’t have jump through these hoops. The State University of New York Board of Trustees voted Sept. 14 to remove questions about criminal history from general applications by its 2018 admission cycle. This will allow thousands of former felons to pursue higher education at the country’s largest state university system. Students will only be required to disclose previous felonies when applying for on-campus housing, field experiences, internships or study abroad programs.

This decision was made in May after the Department of Education asked colleges and universities to refrain from inquiring about criminal records until post-admission. The initiative is called “Beyond the Box.” An April recommendation from the SUNY Student Assembly and an 85-page 2015 report from the Centers for Community Alternatives, an advocacy group for the formerly incarcerated, also guided the policy revision.

“This resolution doesn’t judge people based on their pasts but instead helps them to create a path forward,” said Marc Cohen, president of the SUNY student assembly and trustee board member.

“I don’t think there’s anything more important than that.”

More than half of the country’s colleges and universities, including SUNY’s 64 campuses, currently ask applicants about previous felony convictions, according to a study by the Centers for Community Alternatives.

Too Precautionary I

t is often repeated that the United States was formed during the Enlightenment or Age of Reason.

Public discourse was not always reasonable though, even during the 18th century and the tradition continues today, as anyone who goes to a public meeting or a protest rally will soon observe. The scientific method requires that a hypothesis be falsifiable. In other words you should be able to identify the results of an experiment that don’t agree with your hypothesis. This is the part of the method you see violated constantly in the public arena. Most people prefer to collect only evidence that props up the conclusions that they have already decided are true. This sort of activity is most irritating when it is dressed up as if it were science.

The Wind Farm Advisory Committee report assembled by residents of the town of Enfield is such a document. Originally an 11-member group that included two members of the town board—Michael Carpenter and Michael Miles—two representatives from the Black Oak Wind Farm—Peter Bardaglio and Marguerite Wells— with the remainder divided among supporters and naysayers, a lot of time and effort went into this 32-page, heavily referenced report. Unfortunately it includes repeated lapses of logic that occur whenever it looks like the evidence gathered does not condemn wind turbines. Not surprising, when the

members are listed on the first page of the report, Bardaglio and Wells are listed as “former members.”

The report quotes a comprehensive survey of the research: “Larger crosssectional surveys have so far been unable to document a relationship between various symptoms such as tinnitus, hearing loss, vertigo, headache and exposure to wind turbine noise.”

But some people are annoyed by wind turbines, which leads to a psychosomatic illness called “wind turbine syndrome.”

Loren D. Knopper and Christopher A. Ollsen, writing in Environmental Health in 2011 determined that the syndrome was not actually caused by sound of the turbines, but was instead “the physical manifestation of an annoyed state.” In other words, it is caused by the existence of the turbines, not the sound or flicker associated with them.

The committee also looked at the purported risk associated with a blade flying off the turbine and killing someone. There is no record of this ever happening. But instead the committee gathered numbers about rates of blade failure. A Dutch report from 2005 found the number to be between 1 in 2,400 and 1 in 20,000, depending on varying factors, based on 22 years of data. The committee does not whether the number are for the lifetime of the turbine or per year. They do then compare it to a newer continued on page 7

’ve lived in Ithaca a long time, but still learn things from the Ithaca Times’ annual “Best of Ithaca” readers’ poll. The 2016 results were published in last week’s paper.

Maybe not new things, per se - I probably know most things in Ithaca before they make the list - but new ways of regarding things.

For example, in a grab bag section of the poll called “Best Reason to Stay In Ithaca,” someone replied, “TCPL” - i.e., the Tompkins County Public Library.

I love our library, and visit it frequently, but have never thought of it as central to life location. I’m not sure that I should, or would; but I’m glad that someone does.

In 2000, the library moved from pleasant but humble (and, by then, deteriorating) quarters in Fall Creek to a grand new building in the heart of downtown.

Architecturally, the new building would not be out of place on a college campus.

The outside has graceful lines, and large panes of glass inviting light and visitors. The feel is open and modern, but solid.

Inside, there is a wealth of space and resources: the requisite (and then some) stacks of books and racks of periodicals; CD’s and DVD’s; a large area for children; dozens of internet stations; rooms for both small and large group meetings; exhibit spaces; and work and study areas as comfortable as any at home, or at any Olin Library carrel.

The library says it gets over a million visitors a year, which makes it a major (probably the major) destination downtown.

For most of the year (except in dead of winter), it is open seven days a week.

It sponsors reading clubs and author visits. It has a plethora of programs for children (including teens - so sorely, and sadly, neglected elsewhere). It curates museum-style exhibits. The current one is on banned books.

To me, bookstores are for new and

popular books; the library, for venerable ones. Last month I went to the library looking for particular titles by Toni Morrison and Joy Williams. I found both.

The “Best of Ithaca” list shows how our town changes and improves. Probably not many towns would have a category under “Best Essentials” for “Best Yoga Studios” (not even ours, I suppose, say a decade ago; now, sixteen such essential places got votes).

Probably not many towns with such interesting and varied shopping, along a blocks-long pedestrian mall and elsewhere, would vote a Wegman’s supermarket as Best Retail Store. But Wegman’s is just that good.

Some might say, sure, Ithaca can have the best food emporium this side of New York City because it has monied populations at its colleges who expect, and can afford, the best. But I can remember when we had the colleges (i.e., forever) and their money, but not the fine food and high standards of Wegman’s; and fare at local markets normally included limp vegetables and brown meat.

So, three cheers (I’ll say four or five) for Wegman’s.

On a semi-personal but professional note, let me mention that the “Best Of ” categories in the Ithaca Times poll generally don’t include anything where the Ithaca Times itself would be an answer; so there was no notice that “Best Managing Editor of a Local Publication” is Bill Chaisson of the Ithaca Times: once again, but no longer. Bill is leaving Ithaca for a new job in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

I guess not even the library, that “Best Reason to Stay In Ithaca” entity, will hold Bill. One can only hope that MV, MA has sufficient for him there (among yoga and groceries, too). And that Bill will not miss his friends, colleagues, and community as much as we’ll miss him.

Why Can’t We All Get Along?

In these months of much dissension concerning our national politics, it is well to recall the use of dialog between people to deal with disagreements. The process of conflict resolution has been practiced by GreenStar Co-op at least once in its history.

After the fire, in the early l990s, which burned the co-op out of its lodgings on Cayuga Street, Arthur Godin, the general manager, fired the first black employee, whom I knew only as Matundu. Matundu took umbrage at his firing and asked for dialog.

So I, a council member, along with the president of GreenStar, Michael Richter, went 6

through this process of conflict resolution with Matundu, which was led with a local facilitator who took us to dialog and understanding. We had three sessions with all of us sitting about a table; in addition Matundu and I had two conversations over the phone. GreenStar gave Matundu some money, and I believe that Matundu came to the conclusion, as did I, that he was not the right person for the job. Part of the reason that Matundu was hired was because he was interested in political-process; however that far superseded his interest in providing food to members. study that finds rotors failing at a rate of 1 in 3,800 per year.

The committee notes that the failure rate has increased from between 0.0413 and 0.0005 percent in the earlier study to 0.54 percent in the later ones. In fact, the earlier study appears to be providing data for the 21 years covered by the study, while the more recent is explicitly a per year rate. If you multiple 0.0413 by 21 is equals 0.8673 percent. In other words, the failure rate is decreasing, not increasing.

The committee implies that because the blades fail they are bound to injure someone eventually (although it hasn’t happened yet). But they don’t put this risk in the context of the risk that we all live with every day already. The Insurance Information Institute (iii.org), for example, presents data that shows the odds of a passenger dying in a car accident during their lifetime are 1 in 606, considerably higher than the risk of blade failure in a turbine, never mind that failure resulting in an injury. In other words, people living near wind turbines have should stop riding in automobiles before they start worrying about blade failure.

Nonetheless the recommendations of the Wind Advisory Committee invoke the precautionary principle to justify increasing setbacks from the turbines to impossible distances (1 mile). This is is a misuse of the principle, which should only be used when the risks are high and difficult to calculate. Neither is the case here.

No, this is a case of a group of people who want to stop a project and are using a format that looks like science to achieve their aim. In fact, the report is a hodgepodge of information that in the balance suggests that wind farms are safe, but finds that there is still some doubt about that.

And because of that lingering doubt, it makes mitigation recommendations that regulate the project out of existence.

When some people are presented with a broad consensus that indicates climate change is real plus a few studies that dispute it, and they conclude that progressive measures to control climate change should be rejected. Climate change deniers and opponents of the Black Oak Wind Farm are misusing the precautionary principle in the same exact way. Conflict resolution depends upon the agreement of all parties to dialog with each other. Here in Ithaca some people refuse, absolutely refuse, to talk about a conflict they are having with another person. And so, some conflicts continue on and on even in the enlightened state of Ithaca where the tools for more amiable relations are readily available.

Defeat the Hyde Amendment

Forty years ago, Henry Hyde (R-Illinois) managed to strike a huge blow to this country’s hopes for equality and equal justice for all. He did so with an insidious, seemingly small amendment to a totally unrelated piece of legislation.

His amendment states that federal funds cannot be used for insurance coverage of abortion. Such a simple sounding, uncomplicated piece of legislation has had enormous effect, all of it unwise and unfair.

Here’s what it means: It means that if you serve your country in the military or the Peace Corps, your health insurance will not pay for you to have an abortion except in extreme cases. If you were raped during your service or your pregnancy compromises your health, you’re faced with the arduous task of proving this to the federal government with little chance that they will believe you and cover your abortion. It means if you are Native American and receive care through Indian Health Services your insurance will not pay for an abortion. And the biggest impact of all is for women who have their insurance through Medicare or Medicaid because they are disabled or live on a low income, which qualifies them for the country’s main public health insurance program. Even if you already have five young children, are facing an unwanted pregnancy, and cannot afford to raise another child, the federal government refuses to insure coverage of your abortion care.

If you are wealthy and have an unwanted pregnancy, you can perhaps afford the expense of travel and lodging, and medical cost of an abortion; but if you are a person with low income, you may not be able to come up with the money that is necessary in time to have an abortion. The Hyde Amendment has the greatest impact on women of color. Because of our nation’s inability to successfully combat racism and achieve economic equality, Medicaid recipients are disproportionately likely to be women of color.

The Hyde amendment has made a mockery of the United States Supreme Court, who ruled in Roe v. Wade (1973) that abortion is a right, to be exercised by a woman in consultation with her health care practitioner.

Women have had abortions since women began giving birth.

One in three women in America has had an abortion.

Six in 10 who have abortions are already parents and often it is their desire to care well for the children they already have that leads them to a decision to have an abortion.

Women who have abortions are not “bad” people. Birth control fails, people make mistakes, sometimes they are victims of assault.

It is time for the Hyde Amendment to go for good, for the common good.

Absentee ballots will be available on Oct. 7, so people who need one can go to the above address, grab a ballot and vote on the same day on or after Oct. 7. Data recently compiled by The Associated Press found that 40 percent of all votes nationally could come before election day, in the form of early and absentee voting.

"It may also indicate a higher overall turnout in an election that has generated enormous public interest," the AP reported.

Where to vote There are 39 polling sites in Tompkins County. To determine where you vote, go to tompkinscountyny.gov/boe and click on the "Where do I vote?" box. Voting on election day can be hectic at polling locations around the country, but Tompkins County Election Commissioner Elizabeth Cree said local polling places rarely have long lines.

"In a busy election, it takes about 7 minutes to vote," Cree said, as long as voters know who they are supporting.

The dinner hours are the busiest time at the polls, Cree said. The morning hours — 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. — and early afternoon — 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. — are usually the easiest times to quickly get in and out of the polling locations, she added.

Tompkins County no longer uses the lever-pulling machines, so voters can instead fill out a paper ballot on Election Day and run it through a scanning machine, Cree said.

If you're not quite old enough to vote on Election Day, you can still take part in the historic event: 17-year-olds can work in the polling places on Nov. 8, get paid, and often get school credit as well.

After a training session, 17-year-olds can sign people in, work with the voting machines and help set things up for the historic day.

he 2016 Presidential Election is attracting immense national interest.

A record number of people tuned in to the Sept. 26 debate between Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. A renewed interest in third-party candidates has taken hold, with Gary Johnson of the Libertarian Party and Jill Stein of the Green Party both registering respectable minority representation in national polls. And nationwide, the election has become a common topic of conversation, from classrooms to sidewalks.

For Tompkins County residents preparing to vote— for the tenth time or for the first—here is what you need to know for Election Day on Nov. 8: You are eligible to vote if you are a U.S. citizen, are at least 18 by the date of the election, are not in prison or on parole for a felony conviction and have lived at your present address for at least 30 days before Nov. 8.

ity causes climate change. The League, an Albany and New York City based interest group, obviously did not examine Senator O’Mara’s record beyond his sponsorship of the lead testing in schools bill.

Even this bill, which fails to protect the hundreds of thousands of New York children enrolled in private schools, reflects O’Mara’s lackadaisical approach to environmental questions. This endorsement has stained the League’s reputation for many of us here in the Southern Finger Lakes.

I will vote for Leslie Danks Burke, the candidate who will actually fight for the health of our land, water and air.

I am astounded that the League of Conservation Voters endorsed Tom O’Mara over Leslie Danks Burke for the NY 58th Senate race.

Chair of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee, O’Mara deepsixed a bill to ban microbeads in our New York waters, buried a bill demanding testing for toxic substances in toys and killed legislation to regulate fracking fluid.

O’Mara’s law firm lobbies hard for carbon energy interests in the NY Senate.

O’Mara also personally calls for an end to the fracking ban and advocates for less regulation of the fossil fuel industry.

Blow Back at the Wind Worries about new technology stall alternative energy project

ast week we reported that Black Oak Wind Farm is withdrawing a draft supplemental environmental impact statement from consideration by the Town of Enfield. They had submitted a supplemental document in order to acknowledge objections by landowners who had already signed contracts to allow the turbines on their properties and had received payments, but then had further concerns.

In a change of policy, the wind farm owners had decided they had addressed all reasonable concerns already and told the town government to use the original environmental impact statement submitted in January 2015, which is 4,000 pages long and cost a half million dollars to complete.

The Black Oak Wind Farm—in one form or another—has been a proposed project and a topic of conversation in Enfield and neighboring Newfield for over a decade. John Rancich erected a $50,000 tower in 2006 to start collecting meteorological information that would show the feasibility of a wind-energy facility.

The earliest Ithaca Times story in our digital archive about Black Oak is from August 2008: Rancich came up with the idea to build a wind farm on Black Oak Road in the southwest corner of Enfield after powering his own home with a small turbine. His farm is about a mile and a half away from the projected wind farm site, highlighting the fact that if the project goes through he could see the turbines from his land. Rancich said the turbine he purchased for his own personal use back then was “junk.” The turbine itself was no good, but he knew

the idea was good. When he started looking around for a better homeownerstyle wind turbine that could light more than a light bulb he couldn’t find anything. At one point, he found 1.5 megawatt turbines that cost a couple million dollars each when he was looking for them six or seven years ago.

In 2008 Rancich was planning to build 10 to 12 turbines to produce 2.5 to 3 megawatts of power. At that point the plan was to sell the power only for residential use. At the time this was estimated to be about 10 percent of the county’s electricity requirements. Eight years ago Rancich stated he was warding off some potential investors, hoping the local investors would come forward.

When we wrote about the wind farm last year (“It’s In the Wind”; April 15, 2015 issue), the project consisted of seven planned turbines, but they now had the capability of producing nearly 12 megawatts of power. Marguerite Wells was and is the sole employee of Black Oak Wind farm, which now had a board of directors headed by former Ithaca College provost Peter Bardaglio. Rather than selling the energy to residential customers, Cornell University has signed an agreement to purchase 100 percent of the power produced by the wind farm.

Wells and the Black Oak board, however, did carry forward Rancich’s wish to fund the project through local investors.

Anyone who drives through the town of Enfield will encounter anti-wind farm signs that warn about siting turbines near homes and predict the endangerment of children. The Town of Enfield formed a Wind Farm Advisory Committee to c to b e r

look into the hazards associated with the technology and issued a 32-page report in April. The report (available at townofenfield.org/wind-farm-advisorycommittee) addresses concerns related to noise from the moving blades, “ice and blade fragment throw,” and “fire, lightning, mechanical failure, flicker and other miscellaneous issues.”

After reading many publications about sound, noise, infrasound, both peerreviewed and simply published on line, the committee came to this conclusion: It appears that illness caused by noise from wind turbines is a phenomenon not proven by science at this point in time.

What has been revealed clearly is that noise from turbines annoys some people.

Annoyance is no trivial matter, and if enough people complain about noise from the wind farm, action should be taken with the cooperation of the town, residents, and company to investigate the origin of the noise, the intensity of the noise, and possible ways of mitigation In sum, there is no science-based reason to object to the wind farm, but residents anticipate being annoyed by it.

As regards ice and blade fragment throw, the committee concluded: Wind turbine blade failure and ice throw are not rare events. Sophisticated modeling and analyses show that ice and blade fragments can land hundreds of meters from a wind turbine. However, the risks that a person will be hit by one is relatively small.

The final sentence refers back to their finding that, “While there have been no reported deaths from a flying blade or ice fragment yet, there have been incidents of houses being hit. Most of the research puts the probability as very low.” At no

point does the committee’s report look at any probabilities associated with wind turbine accidents in comparison to the probabilities associated with other types of accidents: automobile, household, or on-the-job. Consequently no context is provided for the amount of risk presented by the turbines.

If one begins to check into the sources used to construct the Wind Advisory Committee report, the “evidence” marshaled as an argument for the proposed mitigation measures begins to fragment. For example, the report cites Alan Hedges [sic] of Cornell, who identifies sound frequencies that cause whole body vibration and have adverse health effects.

When the Ithaca Times contacted Prof. Hedge, he was baffled by the use of his on line class notes as a reference in this context. His research area is ergonomics and in his studies sources of vibration are nearby.

He guessed that the committee meant to relate his work to an Italian study that he found on line, which looked at the measurement of wind turbine vibration that was translated long distances. This study, which was indeed cited in the committee report, actually found that increasing the number of turbines caused some dampening of the noise because of the interaction of harmonics generated by multiple rotors turning out of phase with one another and it did not discuss health effects at all.

When Prof. Hedge examined the text of the committee report, he wrote, “What is written below is generally correct, but without knowing the actual frequencies at which vibrations are arriving at the human body, the amplitude of those vibrations

and their duration, it is impossible to generalize any health effects.” [Emphasis is Hedge’s] … I am not aware of any solid epidemiological research evidence linking wind farms with vibration induced illness, but this isn’t my research specialty.”

This is not to say that some studies have not found evidence of adverse health effects, but committee has included information that has only a tenuous connection to the actual situation presented by the wind farm.

Protests and Their Arguments

The protests against the Black Oak Wind Farm follow a pattern eerily similar to those made against fossil fuel facilities.

In both cases the rhetoric of protest mixes includes assertions that identify real risks with those that fail to stand up to scrutiny.

Renewable energy producers present solar, wind, and geothermal energy as alternatives to our present reliance on fossil fuels. Many of the protests against fossils fuels focus on the risks associated with the technology. The contribution of anthropogenic greenhouse gases to climate change is the global problem, but local activists have been concentrating on criticizing storage facilities like Crestwood Midstream in Reading, near Watkins Glen, and natural gas pipeline construction and alternations as posing more local risks.

Recently Walter Hang attempted to focus the public’s attention on the addition of compressors and other modifications to the Dominion pipeline. The Borger Station on Ellis Hollow Creek Road was not going to be altered in a way that demanded DEC approval, but Hang used the occasion to bring to light some less than perfect bookkeeping by the department regarding the cleanup of spills along the pipeline, including incidents at Borger Station. Hang was concerned that spilled fossil fuels had repeatedly affected or endangered groundwater used as a drinking water supply for nearby residents. Where Hang corrected noted that the documentation he FOILed stated that cleanups had not met standards, Kevin Hale, the emergency response coordinator at the DEC, upon consulting records not available to the public, found that all cleanups had met standards.

Hang has alerted the public to the real dangers of benzene in the water supply; because it is soluble in water it can be absorbed by the body and is carcinogenic.

But Hale noted that benzene cannot get more than 50 feet from a source without being broken down into smaller molecules by bacteria in the presence of oxygen, and so was not likely to be a problem in the accidents listed by Hang.

A comment to the online version of “Enfield Wind Farm Requests Town Approval” (Sept. 28) represents a reasonable summation of the public comments—both their tone and content— directed at Black Oak during the process of seeking approval from the town.

Black Oak has refused to do so. Now, suddenly, they want to abandon the SEIS and go back to the original project. And they haven’t explained how that is even possible given the ongoing disputes with those landowners that would prevent them from building out the project as originally proposed.

Bardaglio refutes this version of the facts: We’re going back to the original design, because the Town Board had already approved it in January 2015. The two landowners in question understand that they are contractually bound to each have one turbine on their respective properties since the contracts had been legally executed and they had been cashing our rent checks. We were trying to find alternative locations to accommodate their

Renewables, a German company.

When asked if the slow movement of the town permitting process had contributed to their need to sell the project, Bardaglio admitted it was only one of several factors. The reasons Black Oak could not continue as a “community owned” wind farm are more fiduciary: It turned out to be much tougher to monetize our tax credits than we had anticipated. We suffered from the opposite of the Goldilocks phenomenon: we were too big for, say, a group of high net worth individuals to purchase the credits (usually about 90 cents on the dollar or thereabouts), and we were too small to interest a large financial institution such as a investment bank or insurance company.

In addition, tax policy changed in 2012, and not in Black Oaks favor. Instead

claiming that the town has been delaying things. After disputes Black Oak has with its landowners, Black Oak filed a supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS) outlining significant modifications to the project in February 2016.

We shared the comments with Black Oak board president Bardaglio, who responded in detail: We filed an SEIS not because of ‘disputes’ with the landowners, [but] because we hoped to accommodate their desire not to have turbines on this land.

We did not in any way block the effort to move forward with reviewing the public comments. In fact, we withdrew the SEIS because the Town was moving so slowly.

Bardaglio and Wells are listed as “former members” of the town Wind Farm Advisory Committee. The committee has published its report on line. Town supervisor Ann Rider said that there was no deadline for the committee to wrap up its work and formally present their recommendations to the town board.

Bardaglio was proud of being the only community owned New York State wind farm development project to get this far and then be picked up by a larger company to bring it to completion. “We feel very confident,” he said, “that the project will be in good hands if, in fact, they end up purchasing it.”

Bardagio said Black Oak Wind Farm has given up on the idea of accommodating residents who break contracts.

JAL goes on to accuse Black Oak of giving the supervisor and town board members “less than 24 hours” to review revised plans before a meeting. Bardaglio responded that this simply wasn’t true; the government officials had received the documents several days before.

JAL has found out that Black Oak is not going to be able to accumulate the financing for the project and draws a conclusion:

Small Government, Big Project

Ann Rider has only been the town supervisor since January 2015, but she has followed the development of the wind farm for many years.

“I’ve been incredibly interested in it,” she said, “since I saw a scale model of it on John Rancich’s table 18 years ago.”

Rider formed the Wind Farm Advisory Committee in early 2016. “It is not an uncommon thing for towns to do to examine precise subjects,” she said. “I

Continuing the campaign to reduce smoking

can comfortably say that they have really heard the message,” said county legislator and GIAC director Leslyn McBean-Clairborne earlier this week about anti-smoking education and annual Kick Butts Day programming. “I hear kids say: ‘I will never smoke!’ or ‘They really shouldn’t be doing that.’”

But hearing anti-smoking messaging is only part of multi-front war against tobacco in Tompkins County. Ted Schiele, who coordinates Tobacco-free Tompkins for the county’s health department, wants to “change the norms” around cigarette smoking, to make smoking less acceptable and less prevalent. Changed norms, Schiele explains, means fewer places to smoke, fewer quitters who pick up smoking again, and children who never take up the habit due to education on the dangers of smoking and protections from tobacco marketing.

Preventing teens from ever starting smoking in the first place is possibly the most effective tactic in any longterm smoking reduction strategy. Most adult smokers began smoking in their teens and in New York, the average age at that first cigarette is just 13. Studies have shown that the older a person is when he/she first tries smoking, the less likely it is that the person is to become addicted to smoking.

According to the most recent smoking survey conducted by the state, 14 percent of adults in Tompkins County smoke cigarettes. That’s around 14,500 people whose sweaters smell like ashtrays.

That’s 14,500 people who get jittery at long work meetings, puffing away in their cars and surreptitiously behind bushes or at the corners of office buildings (even in the cold), and who spend as much as $10, even $20 a day on an addictive substance that when inhaled as smoke causes immediate physical damage and, over time, life-threatening and painful diseases including circulation problems, cancer and emphysema. If Tompkins County smokers are like their peers nationally, 10,500 of the 14,500 wish they could quit.

“That’s low,” Schiele said last week of the 14 percent figure.

Schiele himself was addicted to cigarettes for 20 years, but quit in 1990 when his employer then (this paper) changed buildings. “I decided I would have a nonsmoking office, because I knew I needed to quit,” Schiele remembers. It took about six months for him to totally kick the habit and become smoke-free. “I’m so glad I quit,” he said.

Charges Dropped for Reading Protestors

G

uilty verdict for disorderly conduct for four protesters to be appealed Trespassing charges against six We Are Seneca Lake protestors were dismissed on Friday after a 12 -hour trial due to insufficient evidence.

Four of the six were found guilty of disorderly conduct for preventing a vehicle from passing through the gates of Crestwood’s gas storage complex on Route 14 in Reading as part of a November 2014 protest of Crestwood’s plans to store pressurized gas in abandoned salt caverns on the west shore of Seneca Lake.

According to a news release from the We Are Seneca Lake organization, the decision will be appealed by the attorney, Sujata Gibson.

“We saw in the testimony that the officers arrested these people without any direct knowledge that they actually were on private property,” Gibson said in a statement. “We are considering a federal lawsuit to ensure that this type of apparently politically motivated mass arrest and prosecution cannot continue to take place. The kind of behavior we saw here between law enforcement, the company, now recused members of the local justice

courts and the prosecution has no place in a free democracy.”

The group included Anna Redmond and Asa Redmond, Julia AbernathyUticone, Jessica Thorpe of Glen Mountain Bakery and Peggy Aker. Asa Redmond and Peggy Aker were charged with trespassing, while the other four were charged with both trespassing and disorderly conduct.

To date, there have been 657 arrests related to protests at the facility site.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) green-lighted the plan to construct the facility in 2014, but to date, construction has not begun. On Sept. 1, Senators Gillibrand and Schumer requested that FERC withdraw the permit.

Development of the land would also be a revenue-generator for the Village of Lansing, she said, adding that counter to many people’s perception that all Cornell land is tax exempt, the Technology & Business Park is on the tax assessment roll.

She pointed out that Cornell was number three on the list of Tompkins County’s top 10 taxpayers in 2015, and Ithaca B&T Associates, which owns several of the Business & Technology Park buildings, was number eight.

Even though a UNA label is not considered a regulatory designation, it can mean that a landowner who wants to build on his or her UNA might have to go through a more thorough process when seeking approval from a municipality.

Currently the Village of Lansing has three types of land it considers “conservation combining districts,” of which UNA’s are one. This triggers a special permit process and has to be reviewed by the Lansing Village Planning Board, according to Marty Moseley, code enforcement/zoning officer for the Village of Lansing.

“We may be required to be held to a higher standard than we are right now,” Gutenberger said. “It does have larger impacts than just to alert managers and authorities.”

Gutenberger said that UNA’s are also taken into consideration in the State Environmental Equality Review, which is a standardized assessment that is “selfenforcing.” Each agency of government is responsible to see that it meets its own obligations to comply, but as stated on the Department of Environmental Conservation website, “there are no SEQR Police.”

Cornell has also brought up concerns about the UNA appeal process. Any person or organization can request that the EMC amend the Unique Natural Areas Inventory, and the requested amendments can include the deletion of an existing UNA from the Inventory, the addition of a new UNA to the Inventory, or a revision of an existing UNA such as a change to the boundaries.

Requests not originating from the EMC are asked to be made in writing to the Tompkins County Department of Planning, and EMC’s Unique Natural Area’s Committee evaluates the request.

If the UNA Committee recommends that the amendment be considered further and the EMC concurs, the UNA Committee appoints a Review Team. The Review Team should be comprised of at least one member of the UNA Committee and may include other members of the EMC, outside experts, and staff, according to the official Unique Natural Areas Inventory Amendment Process. If the UNA Committee decides to proceed with the amendment, the Review Team works in conjunction with the Planning Department to develop detailed geographic boundaries of the site Gutenberger said this process has the potential to be problematic as the landowner’s initial appeal goes to the the same board that made the original determination, rather than an independent third party.

Gutenberger and an outside consultant, Johanna Duffy of Barton & Loguidice, are continuing to work with the EMC to determine what boundary line is most appropriate. According to Doyle, the Sapsucker Woods UNA will most likely be postponed and will not come up at the October meeting of the EMC but may be on the agenda in November.

Rider does not want to argue the point, however.

Rider said that their legal counsel, Harris Beach, has an entire division devoted to the establishment of wind farms. “The board members can take that advice,” she said, “if they want to.”

Musician keeps moving higher

erhaps it’s the advanced angle of the sun, or the vivid surroundings of a fresh stratosphere that has lifted the veil, morphed the resonance and dried up the calm. Perhaps it’s the struggle and growth of a young family.

Whatever the source, Andrew Bird’s newest album Are You Serious, released April 1, is a different and more fluxing record than any of his previous.

There are still familiar tendencies scattered throughout: the cherubic whistling, the deft violin plucking, and the strong and direct song writing, but never has there been songwriting this good, or this direct. The new album shows a rapid progression, revealing a darker layer in the songwriter’s psyche and a substantial movement marking a steep incline in the artist’s vision.

“I certainly have a super visceral, very intense, but also idiosyncratic way of making music,” Bird said. “I have always had a sort of a familiar palette, with the whistling, the looping, and the overall structure when it comes to the whole creative process and I was tired of it, honestly. With the new record everything came from within and I really pushed myself to cross a distant line… In the past I may have written songs that might have tried to convince you that everything was cool, but things were different with this record. I had things to say.”

Bird recently moved to Los Angeles from New York City, and has dealt with some very intense personal and family matters in the past few years. A sort of whirlwind and blunt trajectory foreshadowed the new album, and

the destination was heavy.

“Los Angeles is a much more private place compared to New York,” Bird said. “It’s a place where you can sort of retreat into your world and not be harassed. It’s an open and vast place, and I was driving for an aesthetic similar to that on the new record.”

The album that resulted required a distinct effort and, appropriately, a distinct band.

“Everybody that worked on the album informed it quite heavily,” Bird said. “Our drummer Ted [Poor] and bassist Alan [Hampton] were particularly influential. The record was a seismic shift from anything I’ve ever done before. I set out to make a pretty muscular record. I’ve been known to have a sort of whimsical style, and this record is completely different. I wanted something I could play live as a chamber rock thing, and live, we definitely still improvise. We all come from a jazz background and it’s hard to suppress that.”

The shiny and openness of L.A., its spatial and luminous destiny, can be interpreted throughout Bird’s new songs; as well as the dive towards a more cohesive and collaborative approach. To say that the new album is Hollywood is certainly not to diminish its originality, quite the opposite in fact. The new album is lean and chiseled, completing its outstanding drive with openness for revelation. The record contains a potent collaboration with Fiona Apple and an overall heft that producer Tony Berg (Ozomatli, Greg Holden, Eddie Brickell) has a significant role in. It’s Bird’s first album with so many outside forces involved.

bringing you closer to something you can really feel. The new songs have a length to them that can’t be measured with numbers: each song adds to an invisible tapestry of a wide angled soul. In many ways, Bird has presented a truer portrait of the artist: Great art scampers down the drain at a rapid and punishing rate, it’s heavy and whole. How to find it within oneself is a process, sometimes a gruelingly structured one.

“Every part on the new record was super worked over, much different than on previous recordings,” Bird said. “I think each song is vastly different, each one a world unto itself.

There wasn’t a straight template that I worked with, and there’s a distinct reality to each of the compositions.”

Bird didn’t completely abandon all his old techniques. Some songs formed from his old methods. “Chemical Switches” was one example. Abstract yet deeply visual, it’s a tale of truth through a specific lens, a kaleidoscope of poetic narration. Once you know the story behind the song, the quality of it emerges like a pattern in nature. Almost like a dream, the song is a sort of code: unknown and strange, but deeply real.

“It’s a very personal song, though you wouldn’t exactly know it from hearing it,” Bird laughed. “The lyrics “short, short walk from pebbles to bricks” are about a formative child experience. I was with a friend and we were throwing pebbles at our neighbor’s house, and then it changed into throwing bricks.

’ve bought every edition of every Evil Dead movie out there. Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and company have kept the ED catalog rolling into the Bluray era. Raimi produced an okay remake

killer, Ash Williams?

And so, for Halloween, you get a gift like the first season of Ash vs.

Evil Dead. (I don’t have the Starz! channels at home.) For a film series with so many high expectations moving to TV, it not only meets those expectations, but surpasses them. It’s my new favorite thing of the moment. I took the Blu-ray home and binge-watched the whole thing and then, once again, this time with commentary by Campbell and other cast members.

Developed by Raimi with Tom Spezialy and Raimi’s older brother, Ivan, the series picks up after all these years after Army of Darkness, finding Campbell’s Ash whiling away his days as an employee at S-Mart, living in a

crappy trailer and spending his nights looking for cheap thrills. (It’s like the Ash character has melded with the goofy Bruce persona that Campbell did for My Name is Bruce.) It turns out Ash still has the Book of the Dead squirreled away, and in one of the series’ best gags, realizes that he’s awakened the spirits of the dead by accident, as if he’d forgotten to take out the trash. And so Ash teams up with two of his fellow employees, played by Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo—two game actors who come into the series seeming to know just what they’re in for on Raimi’s set—and the three hit the road to battle all those nasty Deadites.

Raimi’s gang grew up in the Detroit area, and characteristically, the series is rooted in the ‘70s and ‘80s meathead boogie so characteristic of the city, tunes like Deep Purple’s “Space continued on page 21

A Subway Story

NYC jazz trio comes from the underground

W

hen you live in New York City, you spend half your life hanging out underground waiting for trains. It’s like a dream in yellow and silver and haze. The dimension enters your soul, becomes one with your DNA, and positions as sort of a second home, albeit a fluxing and stinky one. It’s here in these endless tunnels that a group of three young jazz musicians came together. And like so many other artists of the subway, they played hard, played mean, and played for the city.

Brooklyn’s Moon Hooch, a trio that flexes acrobatic and in loose expressions, is a sort of cross between the free jazz you’d hear at places like Cornelia Street Café and 55 Bar in the West Village, and the wild and funky horn and drum collectives that populate every strange corner and angle throughout the city. You know the type: two tubas, one saxophone, five plastic paint-tub drummers, and

maybe one wild man bassist, a neverending party that churns endless, dancing to the continuous trains.

Moon Hooch was birthed in the subway. And those lean and sweaty platforms live eternally in this exciting group. Composed of saxophonists James Muschler and Mike Wilbur, and drummer Wenzl McGowen, the kind of energy and rawness the trio bring is pulsing and unique. There’s hard technique and shrewd abandon, and the sort of quality that is particular only to the dimension that is New York City.

There’s no place like it anywhere in the world. I caught up recently with the band for a very brief interview. They’re currently on tour and racing across the country on a coast-to-coast adventure.

Fittingly, they answered the questions as one entity (except for the last one): a pulsing wave of direction and freedom.

Ithaca Times: When you guys were first starting out, did you practice for a while before you hit the subways? Do you still play down there, and if you don’t, are

you worried about losing your edge?

Moon Hooch: We formed in the subway.

Now, we’re on the road pretty much constantly so we don’t get a chance to play down there very often. We are constantly growing as musicians so the edge has only sharpened since leaving the subways.

IT: You guys have a very interesting dynamic: what was the original plan, was it exactly as we see it now: two saxophonists and a drummer and the sound that is Moon Hooch?

MH: There was no original plan. We started playing together by pure accident.

It was a right place, right time kind of thing.

IT: Are you guys inspired by free jazz at all: Tim Berne, Peter Brotzmann, Albert Ayler, or Sam Rivers?

MH: Definitely the names that you mentioned. Other artists that more or less fall into that category of “free” music that we are inspired by include Tyshawn Sorey, Tony Malaby, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Peter Evans, Evan Parker, Greg Sgrulloni, Nick Jozwiak, and Aaron Burnett.

IT: What about electronic music: does that factor into your sound at all:

some of your new stuff seems inspired by it?

MH: Definitely. Some electronic artists that inspire us include Siriusmo, Aphex Twin, Alva Noto, Brian Eno, Xanopticon, Mike Harrison, Tiesto, Tim Hecker, Clark, and Sistine Criminals.

IT: All that time playing the subways, you guys have to have some wacked out stories: it can get sticky down there: any one particular come to mind?

Mike Wilbur: One night around three a.m., we were about to call it and there were a few drunken men dancing. One of them leaned into my ear to whisper something, or so I thought. This man licked my neck with his big sloppy tongue. •

Nature photographs, sculptures, and form

ortrayals of nature in local art tend to fall towards two extremes. On one hand, there’s an abundance of work done in the traditions of impressionism and plein air landscape. To over-simplify, the idea is to cover a broad stretch of territory, capturing an overall mood-space of light, shadow, and color—perhaps using telling details here and there as a kind of punctuation. The approach is subjective; we take things in in glances.

An alternative tradition brings the viewer closer, offering detailed texture and precise forms. Here we seem to be offered the thing itself in its simplicity or its manifold complexity.

This vein is most obviously represented by our wealth of natural science illustration. But it appears in more offbeat forms as well. Consider the work of Cornell staff printmaker Jennifer Scheuer, whose recently exhibited work at the Ink Shop incorporated detailed botanical and anatomical drawings into richly developed narratives and cultural commentary. Or the work of former Ithacan Scout Dunbar, whose intricate abstractions often allude to astronomical, geological, or other natural phenomena.

The black-and-white digital photographs of Susan C. Larkin fit in nicely with the latter approach. She has three current exhibits in the area. I’ll focus here on the work she is presenting at Cornell’s Boyce Thompson Institute, which is devoted to the plant and life sciences. (The exhibit will be up through the fall and is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

Larkin uses a digital image processing technique called focus stacking, which involves compositing multiple images of varying focus into a single image. The result is that her photos have an overall clarity perfectly suited to her intricate, alien microworlds. Beautifully illuminated against black backgrounds, even familiar plants become unnervingly strange.

by Larkin’s husband Timothy, hung separately rather than incorporated into the image as the two have done on other occasions.

The artist varies her compositions, thus avoiding the sort of purposeful repetitiveness that characterizes the classic botanical photography of the German Karl Blossfeldt—otherwise a useful touchstone here. Pieces such as Aquilegia (Columbine) and Dipsacus (Teasel) maintain a portrait-like distance, showing spiky and twisted forms crisply silhouetted against the dark. Nigella

sativa (Black cumin) shows a helmet-like ball amidst a splotchy-toned background.

Others such as Echinacea (Cone flower), Daucus carota (Queen Anne’s Lace), and the Art Nouveau-like Iris domestica (Blackberry lily) use cropping to pull us in closer, creating a more abstract feel.

Also showing in the BTI space are three assemblage sculptures by Christina Coleman, which feature botanical specimens in overturned glass test tubes mounted to rough wooden blocks and hung on the wall. (They hang by a staircase leading from the lobby to a second floor balcony.) The dried plants are fascinating as such things are but I was left with a

A Dark and Intense Drama Ithaca College’s Blood Wedding is a force

Performances at IC through Saturday, Oct. 8. s the audience enters the theater, a more than fine misty fog has filled the entire space.

And so, a funny thing happened mere moments into the opening night performance of Norm Johnson’s production of Frederico Garcia Lorca’s Blood Wedding (Bodas de Sangre): the fire alarm went off.

Though, as Caroline Maloney’s mother starts the piece at such a fevered emotional pitch, I thought the alarm chirps were representing her character’s emotional state.

After a 10-minute evacuation, we filed back in, the play began again, and this time, all went off without a hitch.

Lorca’s three-act tragedy is savage in its poetic simplicity: a young man known only as the Bridegroom (Nicholas Byron) tells his mother (Maloney) of his intention to marry the Bride (Veronica Ortiz),

only to see their wedded bliss ruined, by combined forces of nature, recrimination and the darker sides of the village’s history.

Members of the Bride’s family had killed the Bridegroom’s father (and his Mother’s husband), while Leonardo (Jose Useche)—a former flame of the Bride—lurks around the margins of the wedding’s preparations, glowering and wondering what he meant to her. The third act ramps into something of a surreal vision of the natural world and the ensemble players wave tree branches into different configurations that members of a search party must struggle through. It’s as if the natural world must ramp up its own power to match the resentment and vitriol of the entire village.

Blood Wedding is drenched in a kind of florid, fevered female melodramatic vigor, but that is far from a negative critique.

Maloney’s intense performance as the Mother sets the tone for the whole piece.

It’s no accident, after all, that her character starts out with an intense aversion to her son’s request for a knife to cut some grapes.

It’s no accident that Maloney’s Mother

blames the implements of destruction more than those that wield them. And as her anger and resentment grows, it’s no accident that the second act ends with her imploring him to take up a knife and take action, sending us to intermission howling for revenge.

The women are much more complex and interesting, more so than the men, to the point their energy drives the entire piece. Byron and Cameron Wenrich as the Bride’s father are more shallow and callow, not nearly as connected to their emotions as the women are. Niamh O’Connor plays a vision of Death as a beggar woman covered in awful sores, and as the focus shifts from man to nature, O’Connor has intriguing dialogue with Rachel Schardt, playing as the Moon.

All of this plays out on one of the most inventive sets I’ve seen at Ithaca College since Handel’s Semele last spring. Heavily influenced by Dali, the stage is a stone floor with a tile pattern running down the center, with an Escher-esque staircase leading to a second level, a thin strip showing projected images ranging from an angry, black-andwhite Wizard of Oz cloudscape to a thorny forest later in the story. The tile patterns lift

out, revealing a river of glittering, maroon sand.

As expected, the pacing and technical values are excellent. And despite the dark nature of the material—at times I felt like I was watching a diseased version of Our Town—there are moments of levity that are never gags but real reflections of human behavior.

This is powerful stuff, folks. •

was extremely deep. I didn’t leave want to leave the house after that, and I think that’s where my problem with groups and mobs stems from.”

Are You Serious layers in strong ‘70s vibes, teetering on the brink of the space between pure folk and art rock.

Hints of Bob Dylan, The Beatles, some of Return To Forever’s more intimate moments, and the influence of visionary wordsmiths like Townes Van Zandt are scattered throughout. It’s an album that is catchy and expertly polished, while still maintaining that unique and flexible individuality that Bird is known for.

“The whole project stared as little germs of songs, and from there I accumulated various parts and sections to build from,” Bird stated. “I wrote a large chuck of the lyrics at my family farm in Illinois during a brief stay. The process remained fluid throughout and different parts of songs were built and formulated over time. One section I wrote for a particular song may have changed to another song and then changed back again. Things were built over time.

Environment is important to me, and Tony [Berg] was really keen to push me to unfamiliar ones.”

Artists and musicians are like icebergs: galactic, looming in every direction, and bulging over the horizon.

Truckin’” and “Highway Star”, Amboy Dukes’ “Journey to the Center of the Mind,” The Stooges’ “Loose,” and Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold.” It also uses Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again” so effectively that it steals the song back from Todd Philips’ Old School (2003) and should always remind us of Bruce Campbell kicking undead butt in Ash Vs. Evil Dead.

What’s really cool is seeing the ED franchise expanding in such a cool way, incorporating new characters into the mythology. Santiago and DeLorenzo fit right into the mix, and get some great scenes to play. Lucy Lawless is fantastic as

Some melt quickly, and some remain strong, eventually making their way to the uncharted Atlantic Ocean of vision. They melt fast there in warmer waters, but by then the transformation is complete. The artist has pushed through the currents, weathered the storm, and has inspired through completion. Andrew Bird moves strongly through the waves, crafting unique and individualized patterns. Are You Serious is his strongest record yet. •

a mysterious lady with her own agenda, and Jill Marie Jones is really strong as a police officer who crosses paths with Ash’s gang and joins the fight.

If nothing else, the series establishes once and for all that there is only one Sam Raimi. He directs the 40-minute pilot with such characteristic bravado and kinetic visual style; like his Drag Me to Hell, the story is one headlong compendium of all the greatest bits in the series. You almost feel sorry for the directors of the other episodes. But there is a house style here deserving of kudos for jumping in and going for the groceries without apology or hesitation. The best ED movies were released unrated, and this series is just as crazy and over the top. •

The Get Up Kids, an alternative emo rock band from Kansas City, Missouri, formed in 1995. With their aggressive yet melodic and emotional hue, the band was a major player in the mid-90’s emo scene. As the band gained wide spread prominence, they began touring with behemoths like Green Day and Weezer, eventually becoming headliners themselves, touring throughout Japan and Europe. They also founded Heroes & Villains Records, an imprint of the successful indie rock label Vagrant Records.

The annual Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale opens the doors at 8 a.m., Saturday, October 8, welcoming customers to explore and buy its nearly 300,000 donated items for sale. With the fall event, which runs for three, three-day weekends in October, the Friends continue their mission to support high quality library resources for everyone in Tompkins County. This includes awarding grants to the Tompkins County Public Library (TCPL). The grant includes general support to TCPL for collections, staff development, and more.

Though the band has generally flown under the extreme metal radar, Gavle, Sweden’s Gadget has roots that trace back to 1997. The band have always showcased influences from every genre they’ve been inspired by, like doom, sludge, hardcore punk, death metal, black metal and more, ripping their own way throughout. T

he air is becoming crisp, the moon a brilliant scimitar, and the breezy walks through each patterned dimension a step slower. You notice the shadows that lay heavy, haunting and pure. It is October on Earth: a spinning rock in the infinite universe. The month of doom lays its dark and steely hands on your shoulders softly. You sink into the abyss. In this season, there is the oceanic pull of the bars, the want of dark music and warn spirits under urban lights. Also the yearning for fright, the comfortable expansion of fear. This is the time to drink to the fall demons, toast the sinking sun, and work your mind: spherical and long.

It’s a strong week to enter the void. Let’s get to it.

Wednesday night the Giants play the Mets at Citi Field for the wild card.

Pick yourself a nice bar stool to watch the game. The Chanticleer has got three screens, hearty ale, and the kind of deft October mind set the musical-athlete yearns for. Thor’s (Noah Syndergaard) on the mound for New York, while Madison Bumgarner’s on the hill for San Fran; this is the sort of duel that drips of October magic. The icicles of darkness paint MLB a lush fantasy during this month. Order up a pint of Guinness and watch the fireworks (Cespedes wins it in the ninth with a walk off ).

your film selection from TCPL and you’re ready to trip out. Check out Wong Karwai’s futuristic romantic drama 2046: a vivid and strange account of relationships in flux. There’s time travel, mind travel, and a loose and arty methodology to the film. It has the sentimentality of French New Wave and the odd juxtaposition of ‘80s horror. It’s a great picture. Make sure to check out the all-time October film The Crow. A behemoth of action, redemptive violence, and pure darkness, the film is sadly Brandon Lee’s (Bruce Lee’s son) last film, as he was accidentally killed during the making of it. There’s a deep mark of eternity to the picture, the acting is insanely great, the soundtrack a dark alternative romp, and the scene in which Eric Draven (Lee) plays avant-garde guitar solo atop the rooftops of a nightmarish Detroit, is beyond moving. Also, check out David Lynch’s Lost Highway: a cerebral workout and nightmarish jaunt into the outer-reaches of the mind’s resonance.

And seeing Bill Pullman play edgy and nut-bar free jazz is always super cool.

Speaking of free jazz, check out Moon Hooch on Saturday at The Haunt.

This Brooklyn trio learned the ropes in the subways of NYC. Their form is aggressive and playful: a buoyant mix of gritty technique. If not that, head to the Chanticleer Loft to check out the rock-and-roll groove of Luke G & The Candyhearts. They rip an early sort of swing and doo-wop rock, lush and refined. They’ll be celebrating a record release through Angry Mom Records, so it’s not only a cool show; it’s a wicked cool show. Come out and show your support for the bands and one hell-of-a record store.

Monday night is the real jewelcrown of darkness and delight. Sweden’s Gadget makes a ridiculously rare appearance here in Ithaca, grinding and punishing their way to the ninth gate at
