T

ompkins Cortland Community College announced that it started classes on Aug. 31, following the COVID-19 screenings of 275 faculty, staff, and students – including all the students living on campus.

The testing was a key component of new plans to ensure safety for everyone returning to the campus.

Testing was held on three separate days and concluded with one positive test result.

The school announced that none of students who live on campus tested positive for coronavirus. The college shared that the person who tested positive was asymptomatic and would not have known their status had it not been for the screening process.

That person is now following health department guidance at their off-campus residence.

Among the changes the college has made due to the pandemic is a dramatic dilution of the on campus population. The college reports that 38 percent of classes are being held in-person and faculty and administration have prepared the semester so that classes are structured to provide maximum flexibility for students and offer multi-section courses with both in-person and remote options.

The college has also created a coalition of campus professionals whose focus is to provide services a student required to quarantine on campus should need arise. The school has titled the group the “Quaranteam”.

President Orinthia Montague said the “goal this semester is to strike the right balance between protecting the safety of our faculty, staff, and students and providing a flexible and high quality learning experience...we are thankful to have had the support of our other local higher educational institutions, the SUNY system, the Tompkins County Health Department, and Cayuga Health Systems to ensure a smooth and safe restart to our semester.”

Bettsie Park and Ken Jupiter inside the 15 Steps gifts shop on the Commons

15 Steps owners to retire

O

n Thursday, Downtown Ithaca’s 15 STEPS owners Bettsie Park and Ken Jupiter announced that they have sold their gift shop after nearly 40 years of business in the Commons, 171 East State St. The duo intends to retire on Aug. 31.

Scott Dolphin, Todd Nau, and Carol Travis, co-owners of Breathe, a brand name women's clothing and accessories shop also located in the Commons, will take over the specialty gift shop following Park and Jupiter’s departure.

Park and Jupiter said that they feel confident in Dolphin’s leadership and his team’s ability to take 15 Steps into the future.

15 STEPS first opened in 1982 with just 21 artists. Park and Jupiter were both craftspeople at the time with a goal of creating a place for American Craftworks to be displayed and purchased at a fair price.

“It’s a long time, but it has been worth it to see 15 STEPS grow,” Park and Jupiter said.

“We are proud to have been part of the Ithaca community and proud to have supported the many creative craftspeople we carry... We are confident that passing the torch to Scott, Todd, and Carol is the right move for us, for them, and for this community.”

The shop’s first location was on the second floor of a mercantile building four blocks from downtown. The owners were inspired to name the shop after the 15 steps customers had to climb to get to the original location. Over the 38 years, the business has steadily grown into a Commons’ staple and a home to work produced by over 165 artists from across the country.

Ken Jupiter said that he feels confident the new owners will continue the mission he and Bettsie Park set out with

or many of us, should the list of possible answers become overwhelming or the right word escape us altogether, when we put down an incomplete crossword puzzle, it’s down for good. But for the dedicated crossword player, where there’s a blank, there’s a will to put a word in it.

That’s the philosophy that the chair of the Annual Finger Lakes Crossword Competition Gary Weissbrot took to address the coronavirus-enforced postponement that pushed this year’s Eighth Annual competition from March to September.

The FLCC is a fundraiser which provides all its proceeds to Tompkins Learning Partners and consists of individuals or teams competing at three levels of difficulty to complete crossword puzzles in an event which last year drew over 300 participants. It is supported by

businesses and organizations, including the Ithaca Times, as well as participant fees which are “pay-what-you can.”

Like nearly everyone, Weissbot assumed that the pandemic would be over by summer, he said, but as Summer came and the rate continued to increase, in many cases spiking in July, he knew they would never be able to meet in person. He was left with two options: officially cancel the event or find another way to get people their crosswords.

“When we first canceled and moved it to September, of course many people had already registered, we offered to refund tickets to anyone who wanted even though we planned to reschedule the event,” Weissbrot said, who said he was surprised by the number of people still wanting to participate regardless of

where. “Surprisingly, only two registrants requested a refund.

Everyone else either said ‘We’ll be there in September’ or ‘Keep the money; it’s a worthwhile organization and we’ll see you next year.” The two participants were Cornell graduates who were returning home in May, Weisbrot said.

So, he decided to move the competition from the crowded cafeteria of Boynton Middle School to the kitchen tables, living rooms and park benches of participants' own homes and local parks in the competition’s first-ever “Honor” event.

“Instead of canceling this event, we have come up with another way to keep the tradition alive. On your own timeline, we will all participate in the Eighth Annual FLCC and “Honor” Event. (Only in Ithaca!)” the website states.

As an “Honor” competition, each participant will be responsible for recording and reporting their own times directly to Weissbrot. A mark of a dedicated crossword player is the commitment to completing

the crossword without cheating, he said.

“Obviously, there are no cash prizes, so you can cheat all you want but you’ll have to live with that,” he said. “All you get is bragging rights and it’s not really worth it if you cheated at all.”

Two weeks before Sept. 26, registrants should expect to receive an envelope mailed directly by Weissbrot. Inside each envelope will be a program for the event, the crossword puzzle they’ve selected and other games usually enjoyed at the event.

This year’s crosswords will still be created by Adam Pearl, who has created crossword puzzles for the New York Times and other FLCCs in the past; and registrants will still be able to participate in groups. All puzzles are due to Weissbrot on September 26 by 5 p.m. via text or email. continued on page 7

New CTB location opens

T

here’s no sign on the door telling you to come in but, from the line that stretches out of it each morning, it’s pretty obvious customers are excited that Collegetown Bagels (CTB) on College Ave. is once again open for business.

After months of construction and nearly a year of speculation, the immutable Collegetown staple has finally moved from its nearly 40-year home at 415 College Ave. to 420 College Ave., directly

across the street. The business was forced to relocate after the owners of the 415 property were approved to demolish the building by the city council in a 7-6 vote. The building is set to be reconstructed.

After construction was halted at the new location following NYS PAUSE regulation signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo, CTB opened a food truck outside of the shop.

Petition to dismiss Cornell student goes viral

group calling themselves the Concerned Cornell Students Coalition are gaining national attention after demanding that the university rescind the acceptance of a Cornell student, Jessica Zhang ‘24, who was recently seen in a video attending a large-gathering without a mask.

Zhang, who is a popular TikTok influencer who became famous for her content which centers around her time at the university, because she is reported to have “hosted and attended parties” that did not participate in social distancing.

“Jessica Zhang has shown that she does not care to comply with public safety measures and wants to put other citizens at risk for the sake of her own entertainment. These are NOT what Cornell students value and she is a horrible representation of what the university stands for during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC,” states the Change.org petition.

The petition includes a dropbox folder that includes links to all of the videos that show Zhang and 12 of her friends taking photos at a house party without masks and arm wrestling. The petition, which was started on Monday, has already garnered nearly 3,000 signatures in support of the measure.

The petition continues: “We need to hold these students accountable for their actions.

If this is the type of behavior that Jessica Zhang is willing to publicly show, she does not need to be a student at Cornell-- risking the lives of many other underprivileged students and Ithacans who do not have the resources/means to leave Ithaca or travel back to their homes.”

Cornell does have a Behav-

ioral Compact that students are required to sign before returning to school this fall. The contract outlines expectations from the university of its students as they return to campus.

It also threatens “temporary suspension from the university while the disciplinary matter is pending and sanctions up to and including dismissal from the university should [the stu-

dent] be found responsible,” by the Office of the Judiciary Administrator.

The compact specifies that social functions should have no more than 30 people in attendance who maintain a six-foot physical distance while wearing face coverings at all times. It’s unclear how many people attended Zhang’s party, in total. Other students who attended the gathering have not been named or identified in the petition.

The compact that students are required to sign does state that students refrain from “or-

ganizing, hosting, or attending events, parties, or other social gatherings on or off-campus that may cause safety risks to me and other members of the community.”

The students behind the petition are calling on the school to take an active stand against Cornell students who violate their code of conduct as it pertains to the COVID-19 pan-

demic rather than turning a blind eye. Following growing reports of students’ attending large gatherings, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that “If clusters of positive cases emerge on particular areas of a campus while still below five percent or under 100 students, but strain the college's ability to isolate and contact trace, the college must return to 100 percent distance learning with limited on-campus activity.”

Students are also able to

report on another via the university’s reporting tool COVID-19 Zhang’s TikTok boasts over 500,000 followers and a rising number of content likes that currently sit above 12 million.

She usually gives her followers tips and life hacks to help ease the anxieties of college life.

She covers topics like admissions, budgeting, essay writing, scholarships, and studying tips.

According to the Washington Post, Zhang said that she’s been unfairly targeted by her fellow students. She pointed out that a number of students around Collegetown are not wearing face coverings and said that she has said nothing of it. Zhang several statements now apologizing for her actions and asking for her classmates to forgive her.

Vice President of Student and Campus Life Ryan Lombardi responded to a request for a statement from the university about the case against Jessica Zhang.

“Cornell University is aware of nine, new positive COVID-19 cases detected within our student body. The students are in isolation and receiving proper care, and the Tompkins County Health Department is conducting contact tracing at this time. As I reminded our students in a message yesterday and again this afternoon, we must all do our part to follow Health Department and Cornell public health guidelines to limit the spread of the virus. Any student who is concerned about potential exposure should contact Cornell Health.”

Two rescues over the weekend - The Ithaca Fire Department rescued two people this weekend: one from First Dam and the other from Buttermilk Falls.

IFD applauded the Buttermilk hiker on her awareness of her location aiding in a quick recovery; they did not, however, comment on the 17-year old who was injured at the “popular and unofficial swimming area.”

This particular season will mark the film projects 50th anniversary and solidify it as one of the longest running campus film exhibits in the country. O l d s fter Meaghan Sheehan graduated from Ithaca College, she was promoted from her undergraduate internship to Coordinator of CUSLAR – the Committee on U.S.-Latin American Relations. After she met her now husband Devan Rosen they headed off to Hawaii for a year and one year grew to five.

Planning to relocate to be closer to their families in the Northeast, both Meaghan and Devan Sheehan Rosen picked Ithaca in 2011. That year they found their home in the countryside of Brooktondale, a community that they both love.

Friendship Donations Network, founded in 1988 by Ithaca’s visionary Sara Pines saves about 1,000-1,500 pounds of food every day, with one outstanding Coordinator and a far-flung group of amazing volunteers. Meaghan was the perfect fit when Sara and her husband Aaron Pines retired (only to begin a second redistribution program we hope to read about soon).

to people. FDN operates 364 days a year, thanks to a network of dedicated volunteers. We don’t buy any food and we don’t sell any food. We rescue good food and connect it with people and programs in our community. FDN volunteers are able to pick up and distribute fresh food quickly and often on short notice. Most of the food which we pick up is used the same day.”

So how does Friendship Donations Network (FDN) and its band of community volunteers pull this off?

Meaghan: “Each day a volunteer picks up food from our food donor partners and the food is distributed through our network of 50+ food distribution partners. We partner with most of the local grocery stores year-round, and with farmers during the growing season to collect donations of fresh, edible food that they are not able to sell. Some of our Food Donors have a regular pick-up schedule and others call us when food is available. And we operate with flexibility and

e join chief of staff Mark Meadows in the Situation Room at the White House, recently converted into the Trump/Pence 2020 campaign headquarters. The secure chamber is a hive of activity, with staffers and interns scurrying in and out. One wall of the room is an enormous interactive electoral map of the United States. It's the week before Labor Day, and Meadows is meeting with general contractor Jameson "Jimbo" Cornstarch, who has been charged with overseeing and coordinating the various high-priority construction projects currently underway in connection with the campaign.

"Jimbo, how goes the battle?" Meadows said, looking up from one of several laptops arrayed in front of him.

"Sir, generally good, though we're hitting a couple speed bumps. You know Mr. Carlson had his heart set on setting up his studio in the Lincoln Bedroom, but Barron has been staying there and he's locked the door and won't come out."

Meadows jotted something on a clipboard. "You tell Tucker I'll have that taken care of ASAP. We'll put the First Lady on this."

"That's another question I have," said Cornstarch. "Mrs. Trump has us renovating the Rose Garden again. She wants everything replaced with old toilet bowls repurposed as planters. Says it will 'humanize' the president if his yard looks more like his supporters' yards."

"Hm. That's actually quite astute," mused Meadows. "Don't sell her short.

Did you watch her speech at the convention? Amazing. She still fits into her old Slovenian secret police uniform. No alterations! You proceed with that project. Now, what about the amphitheater

on the South Lawn?"

"We're waiting for the ground to dry another day or so before we finish grading. The jumbotron is scheduled to be installed before the rally next Saturday, and we've removed the trees that obscured the "No More Bullshit" billboard on the house." "'No More Bullshit'? I thought we decided on 'Keep America Great'."

"Actually, the president saw it and made that change himself. I forgot to tell you." Cornstarch shuffled uncomfortably.

"Damn it," said Meadows. "I need to be in the loop on these things." Meadows stood up. "Never mind. I'm sorry. You're doing a great job, and I've just got a lot on my plate. Did we work out the bugs in the Oval Office? The president will be campaigning from there and we can't afford any glitches."

"The teleprompter has been triplechecked, Sir, and every time the president goes off script the chair at the Resolute Desk has been wired to give him a small electric charge as a reminder."

"Small charge?"

"40 volts."

"Hm. Why don't we double that. And let's keep that under our hats," said Meadows, winking. "OK, last item, and then I've got to run. Are we good on the new look for Air Force One?" "I'm told that the MAGA logo is clearly visible from the ground until the aircraft is at fifteen thousand feet."

"Excellent work, Cornstarch. Let's meet again tomorrow, same time. I'll want an update on the South Lawn rally schedule at that time. This thing is ours to lose!"

enough to respond to needs that arise and provide food to its partners in a way that is simple, efficient, and without a lot of bureaucracy. We also work closely with our food distribution partners to match the appropriate type and quantity of food to their needs and work with them to redistribute any surplus they may have after their distribution.”

But the competition is larger than the competition itself, said Weisbrot. Every year the event is hosted as a fundraiser that donates all of its proceeds to promoting adult literacy in Tompkins County. In the past, funds have increased year after year; last year it cleared around $10,000.

Since rescheduling the event, and extending registration, Weissbot said the event has seen registrants apply from around the country to take part in this year’s competition.

Ken Harris, who has attended the event for the past four years, said he has no plan of missing this year. “I commend their efforts to make sure we still have a fun competition this year. I think it’s going to be exciting. I’m doing it with a partner this year and we’re going to meet somewhere

with a couple of pencils, open the envelope, start the clock and it’ll be just like we’re sitting in the big room at the school.”

There’s also something particularly special about crosswords— a test of knowledge or of endurance, perhaps, because players know the right word is not on the tip of the tongue but just beyond the next Brobdingnagian second. Weissbrot compared the event to the World Series Poker Competition; Harris compared it to a model train convention.

“It’s incredibly comforting to be in a large room of other like-minded people who share this activity,” Harris said. He attributed his love of crosswords to an indescribable love of language and words.

YOUR LETTERS Chadwick Boseman and Colon Cancer Actor Chadwick Boseman recently died after a four-year battle with colon cancer. He was 43.

Boseman had starred in the blockbuster Marvel superhero franchise movie Black Panther rising to stardom. He played Jackie Robinson in the movie 42. He also played James Brown in Get on Up and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall.

Boseman had received international accolades for his movie roles. He was young, handsome, and very talented. He had a loving family who was by his Los Angeles bedside when he died. Colon cancer robbed him of another 20 or even 30 years of movie stardom.

Boseman’s early diagnosis of colon cancer at the age of 39 reminds us all of the seriousness of colon cancer. All cancer is serious but colon cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States when women and men’s statistics are combined.

Fifty was previously the recommended age for the first colonoscopy. Newer reports have recommended age 45. I would suggest talking to your doctor by the age of 40 about a colonoscopy. My doctor has been adamant that my sons have colonoscopies by the time they are 40. There are more and more reports of early death from colon cancer.

Television journalist Katie Couric’s husband Jay Monahan died in 1998 at the age of 42 While you are scheduling your colonoscopy eat plenty of fiber. When I was a kid in health class, we were taught about the importance of eating fruit and vegetables.

I can’t underscore enough the importance of eating broccoli, lots of other vegetables, strawberries, oranges, apples and other fruit. A big bowl of plain oatmeal every morning and a handful of walnuts is another good choice.

There is no eternal fountain of youth in this world. However, I do hope we can live a lot of more good years and keep in mind that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

“Originally, our new location was supposed to open June 1. Our plan was to move from one side of the street to the other simultaneously but once COVID came we had to shut down construction on the site for 10 weeks,” said Brous “That left us with a period of time all summer when we would have no place to operate.

We were trying to respond to the customer demand and provide something on the street during that downtime and it went really well.”

Brous said that the food truck wasn’t a perfect replacement for the demands only an in-store location could meet. The food truck was small(er) than a food line would be and only one or two people could comfortably fit inside at a time. Now, at the new location, Brous said they have more space than either the food truck or their 415 location offered them.

Directly across the street from where the old one once stood, visitors will find a very different CTB. It’s got a wall full of multi-colored glass bottles, a fireplace, gender neutral bathrooms, more seating, more space to move around, a backdoor entrance and pick-up window (perfect for COVID-times.) But none of the differences are likely to take away from the nostalgic feeling that keeps alum and graduating seniors coming back and talking ceaselessly about their wild nights and escapades.

“It’s a very different space in terms of it being a different building and having a different shape, and it has a lot of brick character that we had to work around. So we had to utilize what existed and add our brand into it,” said Brous.

He admitted that keeping his businesses alive during the pandemic has been tiring.

and owners used to meet once per week to discuss the matters, they’ve adjusted to meeting daily in order to navigate the changing winds of the pandemic and regulations.

Although all three storefront CTB locations, plus Ithaca Bakery have remained open, the business has suffered some casualties. CTB Fresh, located within Island Fitness, was forced to close when the gym closed and Ruloffs, a restaurant and pub they owned in the same building next to CTB, closed immediately after the pandemic began. Brous said he doesn’t imagine they’ll relocate the latter.

Brous said closing CTB was not an option— not even while construction was delayed. “If we were going to close [CTB], we’d might as well close the whole business,” said Brous. “It was either that or figure out how we were going to pivot and make adjustments the best way that we possibly could to try and survive this time...We just try to keep a close eye on the changing environment [of the pandemic] and local demands, risks and we try to make the place as comfortable and safe as possible so that people want to come back.”

And it seems they have. Brous said that even the downtown location, which relocated to the city City Centre apartment building in October 2019, just months before the pandemic, has seen a slow rise in customer traffic.

Since the pandemic, all of the Collegetown Bagel locations have reduced their hours in some way or another. The Collegetown location is now open between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. all week long. Customers can order online or by phone for in-store/ curbside pickup or delivery or just stop in as always. CTB has another location in East Hill Plaza at 329 Pine Tree Road.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION Construction projects face delays during pandemic

any construction projects in Ithaca have been postponed or lengthened due to the coronavirus pandemic. Three major sites — Harold’s Square, City Harbor, and Library Place — have held varying stages of production throughout the pandemic but now appear ready to move ahead.

JoAnn Cornish, Director of Planning and Development for the City of Ithaca, said that although major projects like Library Place, a to-be senior living facility, and the Harold’s Square apartments were shut down in April, there was no lull in applications for site plan review processes, which would allow projects to obtain a 8 T

building permit. She said this was likely because developers wanted to get a jump start on approvals regardless of a pandemic, as well as take advantage of the current low interest rates on construction loans.

“We have not seen any slowdown in projects being proposed, projects being financed,” she said. “There's a lot of big projects in the review process right now, and so we have not seen any slowdown. If anything … we continue to get one major project after the other.”

HAROLD SQUARE

Harold’s Square is quickly approaching the end of construction, said Vicki Taylor Brous, an independent public outreach consultant for the project. Work on the apartments was initially halted March 31,

then transitioned to limited work the week of April 27 to fix water damage to the building, as windows had not yet been installed when the project shut down in March.

Brous said the project made adjustments to ensure the safety of workers, including designating the direction of staircases and sanitizing stations throughout the site, which opened to Phase 1 of fulltime construction June 8. It will be finished in October, Brous said, approximately two months after its projected completion date of August 21.

Production of Harold’s Square has leaped over hurdles and faced delays since

its inception, as previously reported by the Ithaca Times. However, Brous said the most pressing obstacle now is seeking residents to live in the apartment building, as Harold’s Square will be finished after Ithaca’s usual rental season, which typically runs July–August.

“We're leasing from mid-October, and we're going to have leases end at the end of July,” she said of adjustments the project is making to deal with this issue. “We're providing some incentives for people who are, perhaps, able to come in October, … things like parking supplements … and some reductions in rent.”

The building is open to student rentals, though Brous said she does not envision the city’s undergraduate population as the majority of tenants. Graduate students, young professionals and professors, she said, might be more inclined to live in Harold’s Square.

Cornish said that although vacancy rates in Ithaca have increased slightly, the discrepancy between the current rates and the ones before the pandemic is not significant.

“I think that because Cornell [University] is opening, we're kind of seeing business as usual,” she said. “A lot of the leases were signed last year. If you live in the community, you know that students started coming back in July, when leases started.”

With a recent outbreak of cases among Cornell students, linked to multiple nonsocial distanced gatherings, community members have expressed their concerns about the longevity of the university’s reopening plan. However, Brous said she does not foresee an increase in cases as a hindrance on completing the Harold’s Square apartment building, hoping it will be finished before a potential large outbreak brings general construction to a halt again.

“If [construction] was to be halted at a point where we were at before, where the building wasn't buttoned up, I would be more concerned, but we have good procedures in place,” Brous said. “We're working on fire and safety and all the apartment finishes, so let's hope that we can keep going.”

ca, the immediate issue with City Harbor construction was structuring a production schedule, Lambrou said. The approval process started two years previous, so it did take place during the coronavirus pandemic, when monthly approvals meetings shifted online.

This transition was not ideal, and Lambrou said he found it difficult to relate key points of the construction process to the city’s planning board, or obtain feedback from the public.

“In planning board meetings a year ago, the public, if they didn't like [the construction], were there,” he said. “We've lost that more public-minded interaction.”

LIBRARY PLACE

Frost Travis, President of Travis Hyde Properties, said Library Place’s construction, which was halted April 30, will not be able to continue likely until December, as they lost their ability to continue building while their general contractor, LeChase Construction, continued work on other projects.

At the time the project was postponed, Travis said it had completed the building’s foundation and was almost finished with its masonry stage, which will be followed by steelwork. The active adult housing community will provide housing to adults 55 years old and over, providing amenities at a cheaper cost than Kendal at Ithaca — a continuing care retirement facility in Ithaca — Travis contended.

“LeChase’s subcontractors went on to other work because they needed to keep … their team active, and we kind of got bumped to the bottom of the queue,” he said. “[Library Place is] a product in housing that really doesn't exist in Ithaca. …

Some people like the lifestyle of Kendal. …

You're paying for the right to receive care at some point when you need it, and our model says you don't pay for any more than you need.”

Cornish said she could envision the possibility of more delays in construction as a whole, if a large, university-based outbreak happened. She did add that she is satisfied with the university’s reopening plan, and from community and economic viewpoints, she said she enjoys having students back in the city.

“Certainly if … there's a major outbreak again, and our numbers go way up, we will have to shut down construction sites,” she said. “There's been a lot of conversation in the community about whether or not to [reopen], but I do think Cornell is trying to do the right thing, and for the community, it certainly helps to have the students here.”

CITY HARBOR

Costa Lambrou, a partner at City Harbor and General Manager at Lambrou Real Estate, said the construction at City Harbor has not been distinctly affected by the pandemic because it is still in early stages of production. The goal of City Harbor is to connect residential units and marina services with Ithaca’s waterfront tourism through a pedestrian promenade, according to its website. The project is on track for completion approximately by spring 2022, he said.

“Nobody knows when [the pandemic] will be over, when things can go back to normal or even what normal will look like,” Lambrou said. “We're fortunate to have a large piece of property there with a lot of open green space, … so we're poised maybe better than average to deal with social distancing, but it's just too far out to really get a grasp on how it will affect the operations of the building or the property.”

‘Get on Your Bikes and Ride’

He owned and operated his own shop, Progressive Powersport, for many years and he sold the sleek, sassy and highly technologically-advanced Ducati brand.

Selling those bikes gave Jim a lot of satisfaction, but it also reinforced something he’d already known: There is, too often, a dangerous gap between a bike’s capabilities and the skill level of its rider.

I could hear a degree of frustration in his voice when he recalled, “I talked a lot of my customers into going over to Watkins Glen to attend the riding school and sharpen their skills on the track. With no instruction, too many guys were crashing and then selling their bikes.”

Jim and I had a conversation about road riding, and as two guys with 102 years of combined experience, we’ve seen a lot. “I have only had one serious incident,” Jim said. “I was coming back from Alaska in 2007, and some lady in a mini-van took off my front wheel of my Harley.” “The ambulance guy told me if I didn’t have the top-shelf safety gear I had on, I’d probably be dead.”

rear-ended by a car going 55 mph; and had the driver not realized what was happening until one second later, it would have been catastrophic. Jim nodded and said, “You really have to be aware. Drivers are so distracted. You have to scan front and back, and you have to have the right equipment...There is the old saying, ‘You have to dress for the slide, not for the ride,’ and you have to be aware that the old myth about not using your front brake is not helpful. The newer bikes – especially with good tires – have great stopping power. I’d talk to guys who said, ‘I had to lay it down,’ and I’d see a 150-foot skid

mark and it was clear that if they knew how to use their front brake they wouldn’t have crashed.”

As for those high-horsepower, highspeed weekend track adventures, Jim said “Ironically, it’s safer to ride on the track than on the road. There are no guard rails, no oncoming traffic, and there is an ambulance on site.” He continued, “One of the cool things they do at the New York Safety Track is to host a ‘Rookie Day.’ They do a ‘follow the leader’ thing, and they show you the right lines to take, proper braking, how to read the pavement.” Asked to clarify, Jim said, “You see those ‘black snakes’ when they patch roads, and those can make a bike feel very different. When you get the right training, you learn that a little wiggle doesn’t have to mean you’re losing control.”

Hovanec and his racing buddies will get on the track as often as they can until it gets too cold, and then Jim – unlike most people – will get happier as the temperatures plummet. When the ice gets thick enough, he will get on his bike with the metal-studded tires and ice-race on ponds until it gets warm enough to get back on the road and track.

When you’re 73, and you know you only have 15 or 20 years left to race competitively, you follow the advice of Freddie Mercury and Queen. You “Get on Your Bikes and Ride.”

t 73, Jim Hovanec knows that he should make wise decisions regarding face coverings and social distancing. So, on a typical weekend, he will put on a helmet (and full leathers), stay about 6 feet away from his fellow motorcyclists, and enjoy himself at 140 miles per hour.

“I have raced about a dozen times this year,” Jim told me, “half of them at the new track in Pineville, several times at the New York State Safety Track and we did a three-day event in Michigan. That was great. It was a two and a half mile track, and we raced going in different directions (in separate races, of course) and it felt like a different track.”

When I asked about that 140 mph, Jim said, “At the track, people ride at their own skill level and my KTM 990 Super Duke tops out around 140, but some of the BMWs and Yamahas often hit 180.”

Hovanec (who was featured as Jimmy Ho in my April Fool’s Day story about guys riding on the back of their wives’ bikes) climbed aboard his first road bike in 1966, and he has spent more time in the saddle than just about anyone I know.

10 Years of Smacked The Story of Smacked Records

hile remaining under-covered, the Ithaca hip hop environment has produced a vibrant set of artists over the last 20 years or so. Highlighting that has been the evolution of Smacked Records, which is celebrating its 10th year of operation in 2020, even as the ongoing pandemic puts a stop to the live venue shows that the collective uses to bring high-energy rap and hip-hop to local audiences.

Smacked is now arguably the premier hip hop outfit locally, along with Empire Kings, who Smacked founders Kelsey McBean and Dana Malcolm say inspired them to found the label and have influenced their strategies over the decade since.

The group started out as essentially a collective of creatives looking for a way to

help each other out and boost each other’s work. Smacked was born out of a conversation between McBean, Malcolm and Reggie Feaster, who didn’t make music but was still involved in the founding.

“I had been making beats for a few years, and Kels was the first person who came to me and wanted to make music,” said Malcolm, who was entering his senior year of high school at the time. “In tenth grade we made a song that got really popular in the high school, and that got other people interested in wanting to make music. So we decided to form a group.”

Like most things invented in high school, the group came about fairly casually and naturally. The name was the result of a brainstorming session in Malcolm’s bedroom in

his parents house, and the roles of each original member filled themselves.

“We just put our minds together and made it work,” Malcolm said. “I was the producer. Reg was the popular guy, so he did that. Kels was the rapper, Maurice [Brunfeld] was a singer, and another performer, Jonah Tate [who performed with the group].”

McBean names other heavily affiliated acts as Eisah Nunn (or Eisah Fe), a rapper, plus rapper/producer Amir Ali and singer Matt Cornwell.

Malcolm said have been the most active recently.

For the most part, that means instead of trying to ride their artists too closely, Malcolm and the others are there for constructive criticism and some light musical direction when asked, though he also said they’ve maintained that it’s important for them to let the artists make their own way at their own pace. He credits McBean and Feaster with pushing the label’s popularity, using their connections to network and secure shows for the group throughout the years.

“When we first got together, we really talked about not trying to control each other’s movements or anything; we have a common interest and we try to use each other’s services as much as possible,” Malcolm said. “In terms of promotion and support, we pledge that to ourselves first. We just thought it would be easier and more fun to do it together.”

Smacked still performs together when they get the chance. Their performances at the GrassRoots Festival in Trumansburg over the years have been well received, as well as individual shows through Ithaca Underground and otherwise. Their most recent performance was with Ave Mack, of the aforementioned Empire Kings, during this year’s Summer Concert Series, held virtually via recorded concerts at the State Theatre.

Plenty of high schoolers want to take the stage, rapping or singing or some other type of

performance-based venture, but not many think first to create a record label as a group. McBean can’t quite explain the decision either, but he did say that at some point the group realized that they had a wealth of talent and similar interests, all of which could complement each other in some way.

“At the time we just had a bunch of dudes that we hung out with who were talented in a bunch of different ways,” McBean said of why Smacked chose that route. “We just messed with each other harder than anybody else, so it was pretty easy.”

Acknowledging that McBean said there really hasn’t been a time when he has felt like it was time to stop, or when the work he was doing

with Smacked wasn’t contributing to things he wanted to accomplish overall musically.

“We’ve always been confident in what’s been going on in some way, shape or form,” McBean said. “It’s worked out in my favor to be able to continue working in music and with the label stuff, so I’ve never really had any doubts.”

S t i l l , Smacked has continued to draw on the people who came before them while at tempt ing to build a similar connection to those coming up next.

As it stands, Malcolm said he’s proud of what the label ’s been able to accomplish on stage, in music and behind the scenes during the past decade.

“I’m super proud, I think other than just improving ourselves with music, I think we were able to inspire other even younger people to do similar things,” Malcolm said. “I would say Empire Kings had a lot of influence over what we decided to do. Rahmel [Mack], that’s who we had to look up to, and I think we were able to do the same with the younger generations.”

Comedy in the Age of COVID

hen the pandemic is over, we’re all going to need a few things— a healthy economy, an efficient government and a good laugh.

While the economy and government may be years in the away, a good laugh is being served up in a variety of ways already via Twitter and Kenneth McLaurin, one of Ithaca’s local funny guys.

A few weeks ago, Kenneth hosted a scripted competition game show So You Think You’re Antiracist? And now he’s working on a followup titled Woke as F@k Game Show, premiering Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m. I sat down with him to find out exactly what comedy looks like during COVID-19.

put the show together are really new to the Zoom production medium. On a television game show, it’s a larger production, they take breaks and everyone’s together. Finding the right technology and using different parts of video work on this but something else works better at another time. This was a real learning experience, but I think that for the next show, it’s going to be a little bit better. Answering your question: it was hard, but it’s going to get better.

IT: I think you’re underselling the complexity of comedy, Kenneth.

KM: [laughs] In some ways I think comedy is really simple because the thing that makes us laugh is surprise. Essentially with comedy, it’s you telling somebody one story and people expecting what’s going to come next, and then you take them in another direction and there’s the surprise ‘oh, I didn’t think he was going to say that.’

Ithaca Times: What does comedy during a pandemic look like, Kenneth?

Kenneth McLaurin: For me, it looks the same. My motto in life has been life’s a joke, find the funny. I think comedy is a great way to look at the world around you and share different experiences with people, COVID-19 has only made it more difficult to do that. Before, the focus of stand-up was on connecting with people in person, being on stage in front of a live audience and making people laugh and with the pandemic, the in-person element has been taken out of it. It’s forced me and other comedians to find different ways to bring the funny to the people, to try new things and really listen to the joke.

IT: What’s it like being more disconnected from the audience than is comfortable for a comedian? I mean, you can’t necessarily hear a joke land; and you don’t know if you're funny, how do you work around that?

KM: When you do standup comedy in a virtual event, the best way to do it is to have people with headphones on and the microphone open, so that as the performer, you can hear the laughter and the feedback. That’s the ideal setup. But when you can’t hear it you just have to trust in the joke and trust that what you’re saying is funny.

I mean, there are still opportunities to practice too. I work with other comedians online and people host open mics so people can

IT: But what do you think about the audience’s need to be in on the joke? That’s what you get in person that may not always transfer virtually. That question: am I laughing at the right thing? Was that the joke?

Am I the only one who found that funny? Is it appropriate to laugh at that?

get online and tell the jokes. Yeah, it’s odd, but in some ways it’s more like T.V. and less like live stage performance and you have to approach it that way. Generally, in [television], you don’t get the same feedback you get from a live audience.

Whenever I produce shows I encourage people to have their headphones in and keep the mics open so we can hear the interaction and the feedback and when that happens it can actually go really well. I’ve seen shows where comedians have done crowd work— and now we see not just people, but also people’s houses. I’ve had comedians make jokes about what people’s rooms look like. There are still opportunities to be funny, there are just different ways to do it now. We’ve had to adapt.

IT: Moving onto adaptation, I watched your comedy game show So You Think You’re Antiracist?, which is really made for this time.

That’s very much the television setup, is it complicated to put together?

KM: Yes and no. It’s probably more complicated because me and the people who

But as we were going through it we realized that while laughter is good, on Zoom people can talk and they can interrupt, so we decided to just stream it on Youtube. By doing that we removed the feedback and it was quiet, but what helped was that everybody participating believed in the script. [The actors] thought it was funny and

that transferred over on screen and it made it easier for people watching to catch on and get the jokes and see where the jokes were supposed to be. We also wanted it to be over the top so people could grasp what was a joke.

IT: Yeah! Over here, we were expecting for it to be a real competition. I ended up describing it as a show where the points don’t matter and the winner is anyone who can catch on to the joke.

KM: I promoted it that way on purpose.

When people were asking me ‘is this a real competition,’ I’d reply ‘Yeah, people are going to be judged.’ And the reaction was always, who would do that? Why would anyone do that?

And then part of the reason I wanted to do that was because of the irony. If we look at all the competitions and the contests that we do now: Basketball has the dunk competition; you’ve got figure skating contests; in some ways, the NBA is a competition and with anti-racism, it’s so important and it has such an impact on everyone’s lives, why wouldn’t people be competitive about it?

IT: So, we’re in the middle of a pandemic, what’s funny about it?

KM: [laughs] Oh man! One joke that I wrote at the start of the pandemic was: COVID-19 is a terrible name for a pandemic. With the way that it’s hurting the economy and taking everything from everybody’s wallets, they should’ve named it COVID-Ex Wife, but i don’t know. I think there’s always an opportunity to find humor in what’s going on.

Two new Hollywood titles premiere at the Elmira Drive-In

he last three movies I saw in a theater were “The Invisible Man”, “The Hunt” and a second viewing of Pixar’s “Onward”. Since then, everything I’ve seen has been home video and Netflix and screeners on my phone.

Then I noticed that the Elmira Drive-In was showing not one but two new Hollywood releases, so I got in my car and went.

The first movie of the night was “The New Mutants” (20th Century Studios, 2020, 98 min.), and according to Wikipedia, it’s the last entry in the “X-Men” franchise now that Disney has acquired 20th Century Fox. And it’s also been the unfortunate victim of a great deal of reshoots, delays and rounds of editing and post-production. (The movie was shot in 2017, so do the math.)

Maybe that’s why “The New Mutants” feels so…perfunctory. Here’s a movie about five troubled teens with various powers (Blu Hunt,

Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton of “Stranger Things” and Henry Zaga) being held captive in a remote mansion/ laboratory for unknown reasons. Hunt, the newcomer, doesn’t even know her powers, the motives of their matron/keeper (Alice Braga) are murky, Hunt and Williams develop a sweet friendship that becomes romantic. Once all the kids’ super-abilities are sorted, we’re hurtling toward the ending and at 98 minutes, it’s all over.

Its major flaw, at least at the drive-in, is that a good deal of the opening set-up and the climax of the picture are so dark that it’s very hard to get a bead on what’s actually happening on screen. Perhaps these drive-in screenings will prompt filmmakers to see what their work looks like outdoors, and generate new prints that are easier to see.

Next up was “Bill and Ted Face the Music” (Orion, 2020, 92 min.), and this one turned out to be a satisfying, silly masterpiece that’s oddly hopeful in a way I think we could all really use right now. Bill and Ted mean a lot to me in my career, as I’ve been able to review the whole saga as it’s unfolded. How many times does a movie franchise drop two well-received entries within a couple of years, take a 29-year hiatus and come back with a movie that really

hits the sweet spot? I can’t think of any others.

Can you?

The plot is so twisted and bizarre that I wouldn’t want to spoil the totally excellent experience. Let’s just say that Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are back after nearly three decades and still haven’t written the song that unites mankind in peace and harmony. But the time is getting near, and the story combines elements from both previous films in fresh ways, throws in two genuine scene stealers as Bill and Ted’s daughters, Samara Weaving as “Thea” Preston and Brigette Lundy-Paine as “Billie” Logan, and serves as a reminder that William Sadler as Death is a much-underrated comic joy to behold.

Kevin Smith calls this kind of movie “fan service”. But movies like Smith’s “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot” and “Scoob!” are lame, lazy fan service. “Bill and Ted Face the Music” won’t get the credit for being as smart and clever as it is, but for long-time fans, it really pays off comedically and emotionally.

Be excellent to each other. And party on, dudes!

CORNELL PROFESSOR FINDS WAY FOR MUSICIANS TO PLAY TOGETHER LIVE

t was inspiring to see when any musical group had recorded individual parts of a performance via Zoom or home recording and then synced the clips together in a video for the viewing pleasure of a waiting audience. At the start of the pandemic, it really

said something about the persistence of the human spirit— that during a time that forcibly isolated us from one another, we still managed to connect, and what’s more: we managed to create something together.

But there was something missing in all of those prerecorded, multi-tracked and carefully edited music videos— improvisation— a must-have in jazz. This semester at Cornell, Paul Merrill, a senior lecturer and Cornell University jazz director, who coaches a course titled Jazz Combos, set out to reinstate it into his lessons.

“Jazz is a social music in more ways than developing in an era of social change, it’s also in the way that it celebrates the freedom of communication and celebrates what everyone comes to the table with and has to say— it requires real-time interaction,” Merrill said. “So, I was looking for ways to put students together so that they could make music in realtime… [and] figure out a way to perform in a different way given the restrictions and so I came up

with the idea to stream content, but I didn’t want to stream content that wasn’t prerecorded like we did last semester.”

Obviously, making music indoors is more complicated now with social distancing and mask wearing precautions in place.

The way the technology works is that all of the music will be transmitted to Merrill in the master studio, where he will oversee everything.

From there the sounds will be brought together and sent back to the players in each of the other rooms so that pod players will not only hear themselves playing, but the entire ensemble producing music together, albeit a bit delayed.

It’s the same technology that’s essentially used for large concerts, said Merrill, who says he got the idea from Kevin Ernste, who leads the EMC and from Cornell’s Performing Media Arts program. In large concert venues, where it’s often too loud to hear one’s own instrument, this method is the one most often used. It’s the reason you see earbuds dangling out of concert performers’ ears.

In the packet, Merrill says “near-zero latency,” but the real number 11–15 milliseconds.

To the untrained and not/performing ear that number is imperceptible, but for musicians, actively playing, it’ll make a difference. It’s an obstacle his students will have to continue working through, Merrill said.

“I’m a musician too, and I’ve used the system to play and I can certainly notice [the latency],” Merrill said. “Is it manageable? Yes, and I think it will be a little bit of a problem for the students to get used to. It’s a delay, almost like a reverb.”

In the practice performance they attempted on Aug. 25, Merrill said, it was a bit of an adjustment for the students playing together again after such a long time, plus it was unsettling to hear their own music only moments after they’d already played it. Essentially, Merrill explained, it’s like two musicians playing together, piano and guitar, let’s say, across the room of a large concert hall. They can hear the

The students will have a Zoom open while they’re playing in order to talk through the music, but Merrill said the visual function is

too slow to be of use. He said he also hopes that the reliance the players will have on the music, as opposed to looking at one another will also increase their connection to what they’re playing.

“[The new technology] will probably make the playing a little bit delayed,” said Merrill.

“We don’t know if this little bit of latency is going to have some monumental challenge.

I don’t suspect so, but it won’t be the same as playing right next to each other…[and] without the visual element, what it’s going to do is make the musicians rely more on their hearing than they do on visual cues.”

Both he and his students said that however difficult the adjustment period is, they’re excited to be playing with one another again.

Some said the new way of playing was hard but welcomed the challenge. Another foul card that the pandemic has handed live performers is the need for HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) systems, which are required by the state to be up-to-date and comply with a ventilation standard in order for Cornell to reopen. The process requires at least 30 minutes, which is the reason for shorter class times.

Surfaces will also have to be sanitized after each use.

In the long term, both he and his students hope to be able to perform for audiences, still virtually. During the test run, however, Merrill set up cameras at various points of the individual rooms so that he could record the players as they each played. The result was something that resembled NPR’s Tiny Desk from Home.

“Performance this year is going to look different for us. I don’t think we’re going to be having concerts, per se. And what I mean is a collection of performances all streamed together in a 45-minute set… we’re probably going to do shorter performances streamed out more regularly...every couple of weeks, like releasing a streamed single.”

Grief in the time of corona Gl e nn Epps

W

hen Jane Powers’ mother passed away in June, they had to host her shiva— a Jewish period of mourning—online. Under normal circumstances, it would have been a very social, in-person experience; and under normal circumstances, Jane would’ve spent the week surrounded by friends and family from her community.

But instead everything happened virtually and Jane, an extrovert, was forced to share her grief virtually. She didn’t describe the experience as terrible, just different because how does one grieve online and especially during COVID? Grief is one of those things that's hard to talk about even under normal circumstances, but in the time of COVID it's nearly impossible to even make sense of.

Fortunately for Jane, her family came up from New Jersey and she was overseeing a full house while she grieved— for many others for whom traveling isn’t an option for one reason or another grieving during COVID can be ripe with contrition, blame and isolation.

Hospicare and Palliative Services, a hospice on East King Road -- is working to provide a map through grief in this period for people looking for ways to process their grief and learn new techniques for

coping. Already, they say, many people are actually grieving the loss of freedom, social connections and autonomy, the loss of a loved one during these months may only exacerbate those concerns, said Sara Worden, Assistant Director of Community Engagement.

“We’ve been navigating how to be of service to the community and while brainstorming about what kind of issues people were experiencing now in relation to the pandemic. We’re all having to process the pandemic, plus everything else that’s going on,” said Worden. “The webinar series is a way for us to offer information about what people might be experiencing and also tools and resources for navigating that experience because a lot of our regular coping techniques are not available to us in the way that we’re used to.”

HPS hosted its first hour-long grief webinar led by Dr. Laura Ward LMFT Ct on Aug. 25, 20 people were in attendance.

Worden said questions ranged from personal questions about mourning to more practical questions about how to organize or attend family gatherings. There are a lot of unexpected changes to the way we ritualize, and many of them we’ve taken for granted, Worden said.

“One thing Laura did during the webinar was she asked us to reconceptualize the idea of a support network, even though it might look a little different from what we might want or expect; and to try creating their own personal ritual. Even if we can’t attend a larger funeral there are things that can be done online with

other people,” said Ward. She said Ward gave an example of how lighting a candle each night can give space to the quiet contemplation that we might need over a longer period of time rather than hashing through all of the emotions that usually come up during a funeral, per se.

“Not only did we expand the definition of grief for the purposes of the pandemic, but we also addressed what it's like to lose a loved one whether or not it's from the pandemic. And all of that is very isolating; travel is limited; gathering in large groups is limited, so we’re having to create new rituals in order to honor our loved ones.”

Worden also said that the webinar also presented some unforeseen advantages.

Through the online format people were able to be as visible and heard as they felt comfortable with. She said that not everyone asked a question during the hour.

“There’s a lot to be said about having our support groups in person but when it comes to processing emotion and sensitive topics people don’t always feel comfortable doing that in public. So, the webinar format works well for facilitating a comfortability for people who otherwise might be more shy or have trepidation about going to a public format where they might have these hard or strong emotions come up... some people have a tendency to reach out for support and others tend to isolate, that’s just the nature of grief, it’s different for everyone.”

No journey through grief is right or wrong, said Worden, but it’s about identifying patterns and needs in order to reach the place of healing that we all require.

Jane Powers said although she didn’t attend the first webinar, she has every intention of attending the next one. “If I had been alone it would’ve been awful.

The same goes for if my father had stayed in his independent-living facility in New Jersey, I mean he had been married to my mother for 70 years…I mean, I definitely have a lot of support in my life right now, but speaking to a professional grief counselor, I definitely should get into that.”
