ITINERÀNNIA, NETWORK OF TRAILS “Itinerànnia” is a network of trails, with over 2500 kilometres between the neighbouring regions of “Ripollès”, “Garrotxa” and “Alt Empordà”. A network of hiking trails is like a road map, but with footpaths, allowing the hiker to get from any one point to another. It retrieves the old historic roads between the villages to reach many small places.

Garrotxa

The network offers many different hikes depending on the time or difficulty and you interest over nature, architecture or culture. Each route that we propose is just a little taste of an extensive network of trails that you can walk to discover the Ripollès, Garrotxa and Alt Empordà counties.

THE SIGNS all the trails of the network are marked regularly over the paths with horizontal painted yellow signs.

The marks are placed approximately every 300 metres painted on tree trunks, stones or using and other mediums already deployed in the area. The vertical signs is located at crossroads. The basic network signalling (banners with red tip) indicate the 4 nearest population in each direction and time needed. The banners of the itineraries of the municipalities, as the one you have in your hands, have a green tip shows the name and direction of the route. Each signpost has a small plaque hat shows the name of the place where it is located, the altitude, the UTM coordinates.

You will find information boards with a map of the county’s trails in every village or city integrating the network.

LA MOIXINA ROUTE

The first signpost is O1B-Mas el Perer (on the minor road that passes behind the sculpture), from where you should head towards El Triai. Pass (without crossing) a small stone bridge over the canal, Rec de Revell. At the signpost O1 Rec del Revell, turn right towards El Triai, follow the minor road. Ignoring the turn-offs to the right and left. This road is lined on both sides by dry-stone walls, dating from when this was an important drover’s road. After a climb you reach a junction, where the marks point you left. Almost immediately you will see on your right, El Prat del Triai, once a pasture where the cattle herds used to gather on their way up to or down from their upland grazing areas. Here, their herders would separate (en Catalan, triar) their cattle and return them to their respective owners. Once past El Triai, the road continues to climb to signpost O13 Cal Cucut, a house that was once an inn for travellers. Turn left here towards ‘Fageda d’en Jordà (per la Font de la Rocassa)’ heading along a path into the downy oak and hazel woodland. Soon, you come out onto a minor road, where you should turn left and then, almost immediately, right along a track that gradually narrows down into a path. Continue onto a large abandoned artiga (small walled field) and a well-appointed spring, Font de la Rocassa, which is now dry.

This route was designed with runners in mind and at every junction you will find an elevation profile and a description of the point you are at.

ROUTE SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Continue to signpost O15 Les Rocasses, where you should turn left towards ‘Fageda d’en Jordà’ along one of the old cart trails that once linked Olot and the village of Santa Pau. Head on to a crossroads, where you should continue straight on as far as signpost G74-Fageda d’en Jordà, and then on towards ‘Volcà Cabrioler’. In a few metres, you come to another junction, SP6 Can Batet, where you are pointed right towards volcano again. Keep straight ahead until the marks point you left. The oaks give way to beech, which indicates that you are now entering into the heart of the famous beech forest of Fageda d’en Jordà. Take care to follow the marks as the landscape here is very uniform and it is easy to get lost. Leave the path and pick up a track that heads alongside a house, now outside the beech forest. Turn right at the next junction and start to walk along an electric fence until you reach a track, which will downhill for a while and then turn left. Follow the marks as far as signpost SP7 Can Bora, where you should continue on towards ‘Volcà Cabrioler’. Keep straight on along a dirt track as far as a clearing where you will see a track veering off to the right. However, ignore this track – that would take you towards a house, just behind which lies the crater of the volcano Cabrioler – and continue left instead and onto a crossroads. Turn right and in a few metres the track turns into a path that climb to signpost 12 Clot dels Sants, from where you should head towards ‘Paratges de la Moixina’.

The route of this walk follows almost exactly that of the annual run held in La Moixina every May 1. The run/walk starts at the well-known sculpture Marc (in fact, a large picture frame) on Vial Sant Jordi, the Olot ring road. Although the signposting of this walk does not actually begin here, you can park on Vial de Sant Jordi or near the park, Les Mores, and then head to the start of the walk at Mas Perer (on the minor road that passes behind the sculpture).

Pick up an old cart trail again until it splits in two; take the righthand option and start to climb gently. Pass on your left a house, El Pujou, and then on the right a water deposit. The track fades into a path as it enters an attractive holm-oak forest and then climbs to a small saddle, El Collet, in the heart of the forest. Turn right and begin to descend through a forest with lots of box trees in the understorey. The path is well trodden and in 500 m takes you down and into Clot dels Boixos. The path leads out of the forest and passes behind a house, El Prat. Head right along a track to a minor road. Turn right and then in 50 m pick up a narrow path that drops down to the left and runs alongside an almost-always dry drainage channel. Soon, pass on your left a house, Can Fumarola, and then come to a crossroads of paths in a well-wooded area known as Paratges de la Moixina. Head straight on to a small chapel, La Salut, from where a paved path heads off leftwards towards a minor road. At the road, turn right and then straight ahead to pass in front of a house, Mas Engràcia, in 50m you will be back at the starting point.
