Some say great females are the key to breed improvement — not so — bulls are. Three great bulls can vibrantly change any herd in 3 generations, far more than any three cows. Bulls can be owned, or just purchase semen. Great bulls are the secret.

July 2019
ATTENTION MEMBERS
The ITLA office in Glen Rose, Texas had another banner month for July 2019. Our registrations had an 80% increase, Transfers had an 8% increase, new youth memberships increased by 325%, and active memberships saw a 20% increase when compared to this time last year.
The office is still busy prepping for the 2019 ITLA Championship Show & Convention being held in Sulphur Springs, Texas October 9th – 12th. Keep a close eye on our Facebook page as well as our website www.itla.com for all the event updates, special offers, and the many exciting things coming to the ITLA.
The ITLA just completed an outstanding special for $5 dual registrations in the month of July, and this special offer was a complete success! Thank you to all our members that took advantage of this great rate. The ITLA already offers extremely reasonable service fees, so our normal dual registrations fees are only $10 each. The ITLA is still running a rate decrease on bull registrations, just $10 each through December 2019, and don’t forget that our registration certificates include an option to add a color photo of your animal.
As always, the ITLA values all its members and prides itself on being a member driven association. If you would like to be a part of a great association where your voice matters, click here for a membership application, we would love to have you join us.
We are currently seeking heifer donations for the Elite Heifer Sale that will be held on October 11th, 2019 during the Championship Show. If you have a heifer that you think will represent your breeding program well and would like to donate her to the ITLA for a great cause, please contact the ITLA office at staff@itla.com.

ART
TEXAS LONGHORN
W
ith the beauty of the Texas Longhorn Cattle, there is no shortage of great artists in the industry. People all over the world find new and creative ways to capture the essence of the breed. In this issue, we will be taking a look at interviews with engraver and skull carver Sabrina Thiel, and photographers Johnna Williams and Brett Krause. The goal of this issue was to find people who utilized the Texas Longhorns as a muse in a way that made you stop and think about the industry as a whole. The artists featured in this issue prove to be skilled at conveying the docile nature of the breed.

’ve been drawing as long as I can remember. Since I have always been fascinated with horses, they were my first subject. As friends and family started appreciating my work, I began getting requests for animal portraits. I have had no formal training in this field, but my innate sense of proportion and balance has served me well. I soon
branched out into other animals and eventually became interested in western scenarios. I feel that is a technique I have mastered. I also feel I have mastered the art of depicting the Texas Longhorn. As a German citizen, I am captivated by all things pertaining to the American Old West. Since the longhorn is such an important part of the history of ranching
and the West, I began sketching them. This was the beginning of my appreciation for the longhorn in art. Their unmistakable horn shape and beautiful profile make them an ideal subject for artistic renderings. While I was attending an exhibition of western art, I saw several carved skulls and decided
I would like to try my hand at that skill. I started with simple, hornless skulls, but soon I felt confident enough to branch out into the horned skulls. I exhibited several pieces at local art shows and presented them on social media. I was soon receiving requests from longhorn breeders to work on specific skulls. One of these skulls was owned by
Hoosier Longhorns of Washington, Indiana. “Horse Head Show Time was the first recorded 110-inch total-horn cow in the history of longhorns. I purchase skulls where I can find them. One valuable resource has been Joe Sedlacek of Lazy J Longhorns. Once I have a skull, I determine the design and scope of work with the individual customer. The design usually includes special requests such as brands, initials specific theme. Once the design is complete, I sketch it on the skull freehand. At that point I begin using a small grinder to do the actual carving. Because breathing in bone dust can damage my lungs, I make sure I wear a mask at all times and I also have a dust collector running while I’m carving. It takes anywhere from 25 to 100 hours, depending on the size of the skull and the complexity of the design. I also
have to take into consideration the thickness of the various bones in the skull, which range from paper thin to more than half an inch thick. One other skill that has resulted from a combination of my detailed drawings and my skull carving has been metal engraving. This is very detailed work and involves items ranging from belt buckles and jewelry to folding knives and motorcycle parts. I really enjoy engraving anything metal. I hope my work speaks for itself. I am very proud of what I have accomplished in a foreign country and I would like to attract international collectors.
Texas Longhon Photographers
s m a i ill
nna W h Jo How did you get started in photography? How long have you been a photographer? I started photography in middle school. I would enter photographs into the county fair and the Autobahn youth tour photo contest all the way throughout high school. I have been doing photography for six years.
What inspires you as a photographer?
What do you hope to portray about the breed in your photographs?
I am inspired by photography’s power to capture the true spirit an identity of the subjects.
I hope to portray the beauty that lies within Texas Longhorns. Being able to capture their uniqueness, I am able to showcase their true identity in the cattle industry.
Why do you photograph Texas Longhorn cattle? I photograph Texas Longhorns because of their beauty and uniqueness. I know when I photograph a pasture full of Longhorns I will never capture the same picture twice due to the variety of color pattern and horn shape that lies within this breed.
Is there anything else that you would like to add? All though my main focus is Senior Portraits, I take every advantage of being in the pasture photographing my Longhorns.
Br
se u a r ett K
How did you get started in photography? How long have you been a photographer? I’ve been into photography most of my life but really gotten more serious in the last ten years or so. I was first introduced to a camera by my Step Dad back in the early 1970’s. He was an avid photographer and had photos published in several magazines. He taught me the basics of using a camera and composing shots. What inspires you as a photographer? I love the outdoors and photography is a great way to get outside and capture and preserve all that nature has to offer.
Why do you photograph Texas Longhorn cattle? The short answer is that we raise and breed Longhorns and they’re such a great subject matter it’s hard not to take a camera out in the pasture every day because you just never know what you’re going to see. What do you hope to portray about the breed in your photographs? I hope my photographs portray the characteristics that make the Longhorn so special, their personality, widely varying colors and horn shapes and sizes and their overall beauty. There is just know other breed of cattle that is so unique.

2019 Red Deer Westerner Round-Up The ATLA was thrilled to be back at this year’s Westerner Days in Red Deer. It was great to join up with Longhorn Breeders, enjoy our friendships, and engage in friendly competition. More than forty top quality animals were shown over several days, and generated a great deal of positive publicity for our breed. The show was judged by Stan Seales who, along with his son, used horses to move the cattle in the ring. It gave them a clear view of the conformation and movement of all the animals. .A good time was had by all who attended, and we look forward to doing it all over again in 2020!
