NEW - ITLA Show Gift Ideas Big ITLA Announcement

ITLA Celebrating 30 Years !

Letter from the

President The Season of Giving

In the beginning, the founders of the ITLA listened to the wants and needs of producers and gave Texas Longhorn producers a new member-oriented association. Since that time almost 30 years ago, advances such as embryo transfer, artificial insemination, cloning, DNA, recognizing miniature’s, etc. have come before ITLA leadership for review. Regardless of the percentage of members making requests for the acceptance and inclusion of new opportunities, every ITLA member matters and their voices are heard. These member requests have been given without forcing the desires of a select few onto the entire membership. The giving relationship with members has not only allowed the ITLA to get ready to celebrate 30 years, but to provide a desire to give back to the ITLA. Over the years, many members have given time to serve on the Board as well as giving time to affiliates, events, clinics, shows, etc. The ITLA still remains the only Texas Longhorn entity in history to own its Headquarters. This feat is due to the giving of many including the land by my father, Larry P. Smith, contracting and building services by Past President John Hodges, the giving of cabinetry by Stan & Sandi Tidwell, etc. and all the members who gave financially so the ITLA Headquarter title can reside in our bank’s safe deposit box. The season of giving is upon us, but the season of giving that surrounds the ITLA is every day, all year long, for almost 30 years. If you have not experienced the giving that surrounds the ITLA, please consider joining in.

Marketing 101 ...

By: Cori Garcia

There are a lot of helpful tools for producers to market their Texas Longhorns these days. With the growth in social media popularity, do-it-yourself website building on the internet, and digital publications for advertising, it has made marketing a whole lot more affordable with easier access for more people. To top it off, most social media sites are free to utilize. You can create a page for your ranch on Facebook, or a user profile with your ranch name on Instagram. By creating a ranch page on Facebook, you can post your sale animals with pedigree information and pricing without the restrictions that a Facebook group has. You can also post on your ranch page any success your breeding program has had in the show ring or futurity events. Creating an ideal post for marketing requires quality photos of your animals, which in return requires a lot of patience while taking photos of your cattle. This day and age, most people use their cell phones to take quick update pictures while checking their herd during pasture checks. Cell phones can take great pictures, but the key is the position your cattle are in when you take them. Make sure that you wait until they are standing at a proper profile position, and preferably holding their head up while partially facing you, as this will help showcase their conformation, top line, and horn spread. The best part of social media is that the service is free, you can post any time of the day, and reach thousands of potential customers. Other marketing tools that are useful, and only charge a small fee are e-blasts (email ads sent to a group of subscribers), building a DIY website, or digital ads in online magazines like the Longhorn Drover. These are great ways of reaching more potential clients for a fraction of the cost of print ads. For example, you can run an ad in the Longhorn Drover online magazine that the ITLA produces for as little as $120 for a whole year (business card size) to a full-page color ad for 6 months at only $150 per month. If you want to get your breeding program noticed, try a few of these marketing methods and see the difference it can make in the number of inquiries you receive for your sale animals, or the responses you get when posting photos of your herd on your social media page. Marketing strategies take a little more planning and effort than back in my earlier ranching days of simply picking up the phone and placing a black and white print ad in the “Livestock Weekly newspaper. Marketing tools have changed with the increase in new technology, so why not take advantage of some of these new methods.

New ITLA Performance Test Program Set to Start on March 1, 2020 Enrollment begins January 15, 2020

The International Texas Longhorn Association is pleased to announce that plans have been finalized for their one of a kind data research and marketing program, Ranch to Yard to Rail Performance Test Program. They are teaming up with PX Feeders and the nationally recognized data collecting system, GrowSafe, in an exclusive agreement for the purpose of collecting data on Texas Longhorn Cattle. What is the Ranch to Yard to Rail program? Producers both large and small will be able to send weaned calves from their Ranch to the feed Yard where they will be place on a feeding program. While on the feeding program data will be collected daily through the GrowSafe System. The final step is to send them to slaughter, the Rail. The first RYR Performance Test will be for steers 6 to 9 mos. Details and requirements will be on the enrollment forms. The Producer will retain ownership of his cattle and at the end of the live animal evaluation the cattle will be processed and at that time carcass data will be collected. At the end of the program the owners will be paid for the hanging weight of their animals, minus expenses. The price paid should be above the current market price for Longhorns at the local market. The end price is a little hard to predict due to the fact that a performance test like this has never been conducted on Texas Longhorn cattle. It is also possible that over the next few years this could help open up alternative markets for ITLA members to sale their cattle. ITLA is defiantly breaking new ground. The data collected will belong to the ITLA, it's members and producers. The data will be shared and made available to those members that are interested. It will also be used in future marketing plans. The goal of ITLA's new Ranch to Yard to Rail Performance Test Program is to not only collect valuable data but to also look at ways to

possibly create a unique marketing opportunity for the membership of International Texas Longhorn Association. The data collected will have a major impact on the Longhorn industry in the short term, as well as in the long term. Longhorn producers know the benefits of the Texas Longhorn Breed but when they talk with other cattle producers about Longhorn cattle, they do not have any data to backup their claims. Working together with PX Feeders, LLC and the GrowSafe System, ITLA will be able to provide an insight into the feed efficiency and measurable traits that will not only make the Longhorn breed more marketable but more recognized for the positive traits they can bring to the table. It will also give participating Producers insight into the performance quality of their herds genetic makeup. In today's cattle industry efficiency is a key to success. "You cannot market or manage what you cannot or have not measured", and the ITLA recognizing this fact. The ITLA wants to be able to provide our members with the information they need to better promote the Longhorn breed for the betterment of all involved. The ultimate long term goal of ITLA will be to create a profitable, value adding, Ranch to Yard to Rail program that will allow their members access to data to prove and establish a premium market based on the benefits of Longhorn genetics and healthy Longhorn Beef.

The development of Texas Longhorn EPD's is another goal of the new RYR Program. What are EPD's? Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) , is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Using Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) is the fastest way to make genetic improvement in a cattle breed. Breed associations calculate EPDs using vast amounts of data collected on economically important traits. The power of this data is tremendous. A four generational pedigree will be submitted on all cattle enrolled in the Ranch to Yard to Rail Performance Test program. GrowSafe will be using the pedigrees along with DNA samples and the performance results to start the development of EPDs. We know that EPD's cannot be established overnight but the ITLA Ranch to Yard to Rail Performance Testing Program is a major step in the development of Texas Longhorn EPDs. This is just some of the information that will be collected. The collection of data will be a main focus of the new program at this point. Traits that can be measured can then be better managed and marketed. A great example is horn length, by measuring and collecting data on horn growth producers are better able to manage and market the genetics for impressive our growth, thus adding value. This proves there is truth in the earlier statement, "you cannot market or manage what you cannot or have not measured". With this new program ITLA is going to work to put more focus on measuring traits that can't be easily seen but are still economically important traits that add overall value to our cattle. The Texas Longhorn has value in their genetics and carcass as well, it just needs to be proven with hard data. ITLA aims to help its members prove, through the data collected by Ranch to Yard to Rail Performance Test Program the value of Texas Longhorn genetics. ITLA is excited to be teaming up with a profession service provider like PX Feeders, LLC. They are leaders in the field of livestock performance testing. PX Feeders, LLC is a family owned and operated business. Located

in Central Texas with over 50 years of experience in cattle feeding and animal health. They are one of only four feed yards in the state of Texas that has the GrowSafe system. PX Feeders is known for their bull and heifer performance tests as well as bull and heifer development programs. All cattle are fed high roughage rations, mimicking grass like conditions. Data collected on cattle tested at PX Feeders includes average daily gain, hip height, and ultrasound measurements with the addition of pelvic measurements for heifers. During an average year PX Feeders, LLC will test 3,000 plus head of bulls and heifers. More information about some of the data to be collected

Measuring Feed Efficiency With The GrowSafe System As a producer, building an efficient cow herd with valuable, inheritable traits to pass onto their progeny will pay dividends to your bottom line. GrowSafe’s industry-leading technology helps support you in producing more beef with less feed, forage and land. The GrowSafe system provides seedstock producers with the data, for each individual animal, to enable the

selection for feed efficiency, perhaps the single most economically and environmentally important trait there is in today's cattle industry. The ITLA Ranch to Yard to Rail Performance Test Program will be utilizing all the data collecting tools offered by PX Feeders and the GrowSafe System. ITLA will be able to collect data that can help prove the true market value of not only purebred Texas Longhorn cattle but also the genetic value they can add to a crossbreeding program. Once these value adding traits are measured and proven by the data collected through the GrowSafe system the producer can proven the value of Texas Longhorn Genetics. GrowSafe’s program provides producers with: Enhanced average daily gain (ADG) GrowSafe uses multiple daily weights taken with our unique GrowSafe Beef® (GSB) technology to provide highly accurate ADG values Enhanced dry matter intake (DMI) GrowSafe’s industry-leading Feed Intake technology non-invasively measures individual animal feed intake, providing more accurate and relevant DMI values Residual feed intake (RFI) calculation and EPDs GrowSafe uses RFI, the gold standard method for calculating feed efficiency Access to the GrowSafe Network The industry’s most extensive independent feed efficiency data repository. GrowSafe’s program automatically enables you to: Measure an individual animal's feed intake and weight gain Monitor an animal's behavior and growth rate Predict an animal's feed efficiency traits Optimize your breeding decisions

What is Beef Ultrasound? Using computer and ultrasound equipment to quickly and economically estimate carcass attributes of live animals. Chute side ultrasound is used to capture an image of the longissimus dorsi muscle (image the ribeye between the 12th & 13th rib) and then the Framegrabber program transmits the image information to the computer which measures backfat and generates a marbling score. Then bodyweight is entered. The Ultrasound machine automatically measures carcass attributes-- backfat & marbling. Computer digitizes the image and evaluates thru an economic/biologic formula to calculate the optimum outdate probability is determined for each animal and they are sorted into outcome group. The first test is set to start on March 1, 2020 and will last approximately 120 to 135 days. Cattle must be enrolled in the program before March 1st and must be at PX Feeders no later than March 1st, 2020. Enrollment begins on January 15, 2020 and closed when pen space is full or on March 15, 2020. Pen space is limited.

Showmanship Tips ... What is the definition of showmanship ? Showmanship is the ability to present something ( your show animal ) in a skillful and attractive manner. Which pretty much translate into presenting your animal in the show arena, in front of the judge and on lookers, while setting your animal up to show off its most desirable attributes. A good showman should know their animals best qualities, as well as its weakest points and be able to skillfully exhibit them properly. A great showman knows to step in and help others that might be in need of assistance in or out of the show arena. If you see another exhibitor struggling to get their calf to walk, or set, feel free to lend a hand with a few kind words or conrol tips. It’s not always about you and your own animal while showing cattle, it’s about helping and mentoring others as well.

Some tips to remember while in the show ring are ...

1. Great eye contact with the judge while being fully aware of your animal and surroundings in the show ring. 2. A calm, skillful, handler is more likely to maintain proper control of their calf, than an exhibitor that is nervous, tense, stressed, or upset with their animal . There is a big difference in a firm hand vs. over reacting. 3. Work with your animal every single day. They need to bond with their exhibitors, and build up trust. If an animal doesn’t trust someone, they are less likely to perform or behave well. 4. Study what the proper nutrition and feed intake should be for your show calf depending on gender, age, and environment. Each animal will require an individual dietary and care plan much like people do.

5. Know the proper spacing and leg placements on your calf depending on the position the judge has the animals lined up in. If the judge is looking at a side profile then you should have the rear leg closest to the judge slightly pushed back to show off the hind quarters and top line properly with out over extending the legs. 6. When lining up your animal with others in your class, make sure you stay in in line with the other exhibitors and animals in the arena. You don’t want to place your animal out in front of another one blocking the judges view, or behind another one keeping the judge from getting a good look at your animal for a proper evaluation. 7. Spacing is very important. You want to give enough space between you and the other exhibitors to give everyone room to maneuver their animal if they need to pull out of line to reposition. 8. Make sure and have FUN ! 9. Practice, practice, practice. 10. Read the ITLA Show Rulebook for any updates to be sure you are in compliance while attending an ITLA event.

Exhibitor attendance and participation is greatly appreciated throughout the show!! This Standardized Rule Book is the governing document to be used when producing the International Championship Show, the International Youth Show and any regional affiliate shows where ITLA Qualifying Points are to be awarded. Deviations from the rules set forth in this book may result in the show being classified as a Non-Qualifying Show (with no qualifying points or High Point Legacy points recorded) unless the show chairman receives specific permission from the ITLA Board of Directors prior to the show. Periodically, the rules and regulations contained in this book are reviewed and revised by the ITLA. Changes are presented to the ITLA Board of Directors for approval before inclusion. Every attempt will be made to inform members of any rule changes through updates in the ITLA Drover or posted on the official ITLA website. For a copy of this publication, or to verify that this booklet contains the most up-to-date regulations, you can visit our website for the most current version of this governing rule book at www.ITLA.com

SECTION 1 INTRODUCTION Regional Affiliate Shows and the International Championship Show were created by the International Texas Longhorn Association as marketing tools to promote and exhibit the finest quality Texas Longhorn cattle available today. Our ultimate goal is to produce good, sound, and structurally correct cattle that will compete in the show ring, on the range, and at sales. The show ring is a tool to enlighten other cattle people to the many true qualities of Texas Longhorn cattle, create marketing opportunities and identify superior cattle. The rules and regulations in this booklet are designed to be used in the production of a qualifying ITLA show. We trust that your integrity as a Texas Longhorn producer will allow these rules to be followed in a simple and professional manner. SECTION 2 PROCEDURES Paragraph 1. All International Texas Longhorn Association Regional Organizations are encouraged to hold shows in their respective geographical areas to promote Texas Longhorn cattle. Individual producers may also sponsor shows. All show dates and judges must be submitted to the ITLA office on the Show Approval Form 60 days prior to the event in order for it to be approved. Once approved the show will be included in the official schedules of events and publicized in the ITLA Longhorn Drover online magazine. This Standardized Rule Book provides all requirements for approved shows. All affiliates applying to produce a qualifying ITLA show must adhere to the show rulebook in its entirety, and any deviation from the rulebook by any affiliate will result in losing the shows “ITLA Qualifying Show” status. Any special requests to deviate from the rules in any way, must be submitted to the ITLA office for approval with or prior to sending in the show application Paragraph 1a. Shows for the current show year must be held between January 1 and December 31. Show points will be tabulated within 45 days of the last show of the year. Paragraph 2. Halter & Non-Halter judges must be chosen from the International Texas Longhorn Association list of approved judges. The approved judges list will be made available to all sponsoring groups upon request and is also available on-line at the ITLA website. A judge may not judge more than one show in a region in a quarter. A judge is not eligible to judge the INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW if he/she has judged a show in any region within 6 weeks of the International Show. The judge must sign the class sheets showing the placing before they are considered official. All ITLA Youth Show judges must be ITLA members, attended at least one ITLA judging seminar/clinic, and a Texas Longhorn breeder for at least 5 years. Paragraph 2a. Each new prospective judge must be at least 21 years of age, will be required to attend a judging clinic, to serve as an apprentice judge with an ITLA Approved Training Judge, be a Youth Show judge and be approved by the ITLA Board of Directors before his/her first official show. (Judges Applications are available from the ITLA office or online at www.ITLA.com). Paragraph 2b. An annual review of the approved judges will be conducted by the ITLA Judges/Show Rules Committee and their recommendations made to the ITLA BOD for additions or deletions to the judges list. Paragraph 2c. All Regional Shows must have a designated Show Chairman. The Show Chairman’s duties are as follows: 1) Be responsible for a complete and accurate Show Book containing all pertinent information as listed in Paragraph 16. 2) Have names & addresses of all class exhibitors for reference in the front of the Show Book. 3) Check class assignments for correctness. 4) Be responsible for all show procedures being followed. 5) Prior to the show meet with the Judge to discuss show procedures. 6) Be available during show to answer any and all questions.

7) Make certain a completed Official Placing Booklet with all placing and results is sent to the ITLA office for Points Rating. Results must contain ITLA Member numbers and ITLA Registration Number. The Official Placing Booklet will be mailed from the ITLA office. 8) Prior to judging the class, a judge should receive a sheet which includes only data listing the entry number, birth date, pregnancy status of dry cows, date of birth of calf at side and the class age. Paragraph 3. All cattle registered with the International Texas Longhorn Association, Cattlemen’s Texas Longhorn Registry or Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America are eligible to compete in International Texas Longhorn Association Regional shows. A photocopy of the registration papers must accompany the International Texas Longhorn Association entry form. No cattle with pending registration will be accepted. Registrations other than ITLA will be charged an extra $5.00 and this fee will be used to dual register, if so desired. Dual registration must be decided when entries are mailed for any show. All cattle competing in the annual International Championship Show must be registered with ITLA. Paragraph 3a. A calf shown with a cow shall not be older than 210 days of age. A calf shall be at least 180 days of age to show in individual classes. Calf at side may show only in one class – as calf at side with dam or in an individual class. Paragraph 3b. Each class will have an entry limit of one animal per clonal family per owner. Paragraph 4. Exhibitors and owners competing in the International Championship Show must be members of the International Texas Longhorn Association. Regional organizations at their discretion may require exhibitors at Regional Shows to be ITLA members. Paragraph 5. The ITLA’s goal is to show longhorns in their natural condition with the exception of trimming hair and trimming hooves. Exhibitors are expressly prohibited from altering the physical appearance or features of any animal on show premises. Exhibitors are encouraged to bathe and brush their cattle and present them in a neat and professional manner. Any animal physically altered on show premises will be removed from the show by the show chairman. Paragraph 6. An individual animal can compete in haltered and non-haltered at the same show, only if there are different judges for halter and non-halter. Paragraph 7. Any protest, dispute of a final interpretation or any incident occurring during the course of the ITLA Championship Show should be brought to the attention of the International Show Committee. Final decisions regarding protests or interpretations will be expressly and exclusively reserved to the International Show Committee. By signing the required entry form, exhibitors give unqualified consent and agreement to abide by all printed rules. Paragraph 8. Health certificates (Certificates of Veterinary Inspection), issued by a licensed veterinarian, are required for all cattle competing in the ITLA Championship Show and affiliate shows. Paragraph 8a. Show chairmen are tasked with being aware of the current animal health statutes as they apply to cattle attending their show. Generally, any cattle attending from out of state will require health certificates, and the requirements for them may be waived by certain jurisdictions if no cattle originating from out of state are in attendance. The ITLA supports all destination state regulations. Paragraph 8b. Pregnancy status and/or DOB of calf at side must appear on health certificates to confirm the eligibility of all female cattle 30 months and older entered in the show. Pregnancy status can be determined by palpation, ultrasound or blood test and reported by a licensed veterinarian or certified technician. In cases where no health certificates are required, the pregnancy status will be acceptable if reported on a letter (with

letterhead identifying the facility) and signed by the veterinarian, which clearly identifies the animal(s). Any proof of pregnancy status must be dated within 30 days of the show the animal is entered into. Paragraph 9. While exhibiting cattle in the show ring, exhibitors will wear western attire appropriate to the climate. No ball caps, tennis shoes, or written ranch advertising on clothing worn into the show arena will be permitted. Logos, labels, and clothing manufacturers writing will be accepted. Exhibitors shall conduct themselves in a professional manner in the show ring. Class numbers shall be worn on the left side. Paragraph 10. Calves shown at side in the haltered show must be on halter and be led by an exhibitor. Animals must be kept under control at all times. Should an animal become unmanageable, the Judge shall have the right and responsibility to remove such animal from competition and all entry fees shall be forfeited. Paragraph 11. Within 10 days of completion of a show, the Show Chairman shall forward to the ITLA office the official results of the show, signed by the Judge. In order for the points to be awarded to the animals entered in any ITLA qualifying show, the results must be recorded on the official books sent from the ITLA office. No other forms or records will be recognized. The results must show ITLA member number, ITLA registration number and name of each animal entered in each class, and the official placing within each class. Paragraph 12. The International Championship Show will be held each year at a location approved by the Board of Directors. ITLA Regional Organizations may request the opportunity to serve as Host. However, the administration and authority over the show shall remain with ITLA. Paragraph 13. “ITLA Point Merit System for ITLA High Point Show Legacy”: The ITLA will retain a permanent record of “competitively successful cattle” for special recognition, including annual and lifetime awards. The ITLA Office will maintain documentation of winnings per Point Rating System and send out merit certificates upon earning them. Mixed Registry Class Points: ITLA Points are awarded according to the ITLA Merit Point System. Entries not registered with the ITLA are not awarded points. For example: Suppose your entry wins first in a class with a total of eight entries, and yours is the only entry registered with the ITLA. Your first-place entry is awarded five merit points and no other points will be awarded to the other entries. If your entry wins second in this same class, and again yours is the only ITLA registered entry, your entry is awarded four points and no other points are awarded. If all entries in this class of eight were ITLA registered, first place would be awarded five points, second would be awarded four points, third would be awarded three points, fourth would be awarded two, and fifth place would be awarded one point. No other points would be awarded in this class. ITLA MERIT POINT SYSTEM Class Points: 5 points = 1st place 4 points = 2nd place 3 points = 3rd place 2 points = 4th place 1 point = 5th place Divisional Champion Points: Champion = 7 points Reserve Champion = 5 points All Age Champion Points: All Age Grand = 10 points All Age Reserve = 7 points
